The feeling you get when you see something in one of the languages you've been learning and you can actually read it is one of the most satisfying things ever.

When I try to speak Spanish, my sign language improves
When I try to sign, my French improves
When I try to speak French, my English slips in
All the while my terribly-basic-and-purely-for-fun-and-because-I-could Esperanto gets sprinkled in

Guys, this is this time of the year when I want to start learning a new language. Well... Maybe not exactly "new" because I tried over 25 languages by now, but I don't even remember the basics anymore. I want to make myself a little bit busy with something in the evenings, so I want to at least come back to learning something and decided to make a poll and look for ideas!
If you want, I'd be also happy to know why you think I should choose a certain language. <33
Don't be scared to suggest something that's not on the list. I also used to learn Arabic and Chinese, so I'm open for everything. 😌💖

Hi, I hope you are doing well. I discovered your work on AO3 some time ago and fell in love with it! Your writing style, in particular, is exceptional and I was wondering if I could translate A Long And Slow Recovery in my native language (French). I don't have much experience as a translator but I do have some as a writer and with your permission I would love to give it a try.
Omg yes please I would cry?? Thank you so much for reading and taking the time 💕😭💕 I took three years of French in school and I'd love to get back into it lol 💖

I picked up Irish on duolingo back in 2019 because of Song of the Sea, but I'm barely halfway through the course because before the update I just kept practising skills I knew instead of working forwards
Also I did get up to a 365 day streak at one point but the stress got to me and I dropped jt

a part of me really wishes i had taken spanish in high school...i had instead taken french all four years , but spanish is spoken a lot where i live and learning it could help me a lot in assisting customers when i get a job , or just anyone that i encounter in public.
french is barely spoken where i live. ive encountered people speaking french in my state only 2 times
but at the same time , im happy i took french. again it only happened twice , but i was able to understand the people i encountered speaking french , and i can understand a bit of french that i happen to see online. it also helps with understanding the french instructions on some of the noodle bowls i get if english instructions aren't available. and even though i havent taken spanish and know very little , some words between french , spanish , and italian are similar , so i can make out some words and the gist of what is being said in spanish and italian ((i still need the aid of a translator though))
also , my grandparents are going to france later this year , so ive been helping teach them some basic phrases and words to help them get around :)

Absolutely lost it in Norwegian class today. Cracked off laughing, couldn't stop giggling for a solid five minutes.
The word muffin in Norwegian. Meaning muffin. Same as English.
It's pronounced 'moofin'.
I couldn't cope.

I'm doing Spanish on Full and I keep thinking the word "jabón" (soap) means ham, because that's "jambon" in French 🙃🙃🙃

“Too honor which saint 🤨” is amazing and I love it so much. Like doing something SO ODD people are like you must be doing something this weird for a reason when for me the answer is never for a reason just me being me 😹😹😹
Stage 1: using your native language's idioms in English out of habit/lack of knowledge
Stage 2: using English idioms as much as you can to prove that you're good at English
Stage 3: using your native language's idioms in English because they fuck actually

So, I’ve stopped trying to learn German because my hopes of it being an important part of my life have been killed off.
But I was just looking up a musical group that someone posted and the Wikipedia link was from de(dot)Wikipedia.
I’ve apparently retained enough to be able to comprehend basic article stuff.

Just your average male living space.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wen qing#lan wangji#A-Yuan#wei wuxian#(***Content warning for me talking about unhygienic living conditions in the tags today***).#The worst part of drawing this comic is that I've seen so much worse. This is a livable space.#I've helped out friends and family who were struggling and let me just say...I have seen some pretty dysfunctional living spaces.#Hell I've *lived* in some very dysfunctional living spaces.#Hording dishes under the bed was always something that grossed me out but it's unfortunately something I've seen people do way too often.#The horror everyone has upon walking into WWX's 'living' set up is so consistently 'Mate how are you living like this?'#It's honestly so integral to me that WWX's 'just left home for the first time' house/room be a depression/dysfunction pit.#You can learn a lot about someon's state of mind from how they keep their living space...and this guy is oozing 'deep depression'.#I don't think he's eaten anything but foods that classify as a struggle meal in a year.#Everyone is trying to stage an intervention but he just isn't in a good enough place to help himself.#By the way: I want to steer away from shaming people who have messy homes/rooms because life *does* hit hard sometimes.#My love language is coming into your home to do your dishes and do some housework. Don't apologize for the mess king.#Nothing could top some of the places I've had to help my older siblings out of.#I'd be okay with my flatmate having a severed limb and a blood pool at this point.#As long as he lets me take out the dishes from under the bed - We're good! My standards are so low at this point.

i love when words fit right. seize was always supposed to be that word, and so was jester. tuesday isn't quite right but thursday should be thursday, that's a good word for it. daisy has the perfect shape to it, almost like you're laughing when you say it; and tulip is correct most of the time. while keynote is fun to say, it's super wrong - i think they have to change the label for that one. but fox is spot-on.
most words are just, like, good enough, even if what they are describing is lovely. the night sky is a fine term for it but it isn't perfect the way november is the correct term for that month.
it's not just in english because in spanish the phrase eso si que es is correct, it should be that. sometimes other languages are also better than the english words, like how blue is sloped too far downwards but azul is perfect and hangs in the air like glitter. while butterfly is sweet, i think probably papillion is more correct, although for some butterflies féileacán is much better. year is fine but bliain is better. sometimes multiple languages got it right though, like how jueves and Πέμπτη are also the right names for thursday. maybe we as a species are just really good at naming thursdays.
and if we were really bored and had a moment and a picnic to split we could all sit down for a moment and sort out all the words that exist and find all the perfect words in every language. i would show you that while i like the word tree (it makes you smile to say it), i think arbor is correct. you could teach me from your language what words fit the right way, and that would be very exciting (exciting is not correct, it's just fine).
i think probably this is what was happening at the tower of babel, before the languages all got shifted across the world and smudged by the hand of god. by the way, hand isn't quite right, but i do like that the word god is only 3 letters, and that it is shaped like it is reflecting into itself, and that it kind of makes your mouth move into an echoing chapel when you cluck it. but the word god could also fit really well with a coathanger, and i can't explain that. i think donut has (weirdly) the same shape as a toothbrush, but we really got bagel right and i am really grateful for that.
grateful is close, but not like thunder. hopefully one day i am going to figure out how to shape the way i love my friends into a little ceramic (ceramic is very good, almost perfect) pot and when they hold it they can feel the weight of my care for them. they can put a plant in there. maybe a daisy.
