I once saw one of these swallow a mouse whole and I can never unsee it
the naked neck is a breed of domestic chicken originating from transylvania. long called the âturkenâ and thought to be a hybrid between a chicken and turkey, these birds are just chickens with a gene that causes overproduction of a feather-blocking hormone. despite their featherless necks, they are known for being surprisingly hardy in all kinds of environments.

I donât know what happened, but weâre becoming farm people. I just spent 20 minutes comparing different kids of manure.
Yesterday I saw that my favorite farm stand had opened for the season and I squealed and Justin was like why donât I build you a fenced in garden and you just grow your own? A bit later I was talking about quail for their tiny adorable speckled eggs and getting a rabbit just to use its droppings in the garden and Justin asked âwhy are you talking about quail and a rabbit? Our next animals are goats.â
So thatâs what weâre doing, living out our farm fantasy hahaha. Justin discovered that goats eat poison oak and that people pay big money to rent them out to eat excess vegetation and Justin is sold. Iâm not ready for goats, seems like a big responsibility, but apparently sometime soon. And apparently their droppings are more beneficial than rabbit droppings, but so are chickens if you compost them right.
Why am I this way? What happened to me? Instagram? I had chickens in Texas and I loved my girls, but I wasnât this level of obsessed with them. But now I see all these different breeds and characteristics and egg colors and I have become a chicken hoarder. I had to stop going to my favorite tractor supply because I became friends with the manager and he kept getting me to take his storeâs injured birds home. So far we have rehomed 4 aggressive roosters (but kept our sweetheart silkie roo) and have 18 total. Three starlight eggers, three buff orpingtons, three mystic marans, two Easter eggers, two silkies, two booted bantams, a leghorn, a rhode island red, and a silver-laced sebright. Weâll get medium green eggs, light green eggs, maybe some blue if weâre lucky. And lighter brown, medium brown, and dark dark brown from the marans. And smaller cream colored ones from the bantam ladies. And the leghorn will lay the standard white youâre used to from the store, fun fact I hatched fertilized eggs from the store once and leghorns are what hatched!
I saw some reel that said that chickens are the gateway farm animal and ding ding ding. Once you have chickens you start looking up guard animals and then you want a goose. Then you go to a feed store and see that they have turkens (naked neck chickens that are social/sweet and are so ugly theyâre cute), turkeys, ducks, and quails. I mean ducks are stinky and messy but Iâll take the rest please, thank you.
My grandma was an animal hoarder, is this genetic? She had an actual aviary and llamas and cats. We had animals growing up but I remember begging forever for a Guinea pig, itâs not like we had a farm. But at one point I was breeding Guinea pigs and fish. And incubating chicken eggs. So maybe it is in my genetics. A 10 year old asking for fish breeding supplies is not on my radar, what kid does that? Maybe this side of me has lied dormant under some depression fog. I donât know.
Justin being on board is dangerous though. He didnât even say anything when he came home from his work trip to 6 new chickens living in his office. He wasnât as pleased about my âpointlessâ fish though, but I am loving my little aquarium. Itâs next to my aerogarden and itâs such a happy little corner.
Anyway.
We need to push back the retaining wall in the backyard. Well *need* might be a little strong. But the wood panels are rotted out and need to be replaced. Right now itâs 2.5 high and the field of poison oak beyond is starting to travel down and I am so severely allergic my arms are constantly covered is weeping wounds. Weâre going to push it back til itâs at 4 ft and then build the chicken run, originally it was supposed to be 10 by 8, but now Iâm thinking it needs to be 12 by 8 minimum.
Weâve been chipping away at excavating ourselves but with between the kids, the boulders, and my rash reaction itâs just not worth it, we need someone with a machine so we hired someone to come excavate it next week. With the space, our backyard will eventually be dining area w pergola, chicken run/coop, fenced in garden area, swing set and jungle gym for the kids, goat shed/area, then Justinâs big shed that he hopes to break ground on this summer. When weâre done with that weâre going to build steps up to access our side yard, clear and level the clearing, and then put pavers or bricks down for a fire pit area.
I am absolutely obsessed with our property. I want to utilize as much of it as we can, and I never want to take for granted that we are lucky to have land and live somewhere breathtakingly beautiful. Life isnât perfect by any means, but I still feel like Iâm living the dream.

Hey! How are you doing these days? I still love your work, but totally understand if youâre not as into this blog as you used to be. I was wondering if you could build a few name sets for me? One with Korean and Irish place names, another with Korean and Irish first names, and then another with Irish and Jewish place names, and Irish and Jewish first names? Totally okay if youâre not interested! Iâve got an inkling for how I want to build out a new region in my world that is mainly island based following a terrible environmental diaspora. Anyways, I hope youâre well!

Chicken-sona? When im not asleep (like, 50% of my day minimum) I like to spoil my loved ones. Food, gifts and physical affection. I hate the cold
You are a Transylvanian Naked Neck! also called "turkens"
The Naked neck is an old dual purpose breed who can be used for both eggs or meat! Hens are non broody and tend to lay about 3 eggs a week. (contrary to what some people think these are just a simple chicken breed and not a cross between a turkey and a chicken lol) (Also Keep in mind some hatchery naked necks may not be of the quality of bird i am describing as the gene that causes the naked neck gene is a dominant trait so its easy to make a bird that "looks like" a Naked Neck but with none of careful breeding for meat and egg production behind it. Due to this most people consider them as ornamental only.) This is a chicken breed THRIVES in hot conditions due to its featherless neck and vent (yep the naked neck gene typically also thins the booty feathers) The breed is also very well known for its very very friendly disposition and it tolerates confinement well. This means the Naked Neck is a fantastic dual purpose breed for hot climates and thrives as a "pet" chicken as well. This breed is also known for being EXTREMELY resistant to disease surprisingly. I have even locally seen some illnesses such as resistant Cocci take down entire flocks while the Naked Necks arent even that bothered. Im unsure if its due to their genetic background or if its caused by the naked neck gene. I have seen cases of wry neck pop up but usually it is due to insufficient nutrients for a dual purpose breed (not enough thiamine or protein) or bad breeding caused by hatcheries. This breed can handle the cold but not extreme temperatures the birds would much rather be raised in a temperature controlled or hot environment. The rooster's large comb can be prone to frost bite as well if they dont have a well insulated and ventilated coop during the winter.

Rating versions of MilitĂŒrk/KebabtrĂ€ume because I cant sleep tonight and Iâm bored
MilitĂŒrk - Mittagspause
The OG but ironically probably my least favorite out of these four
Itâs really slow at the beginning, which like, Iâd be fine with if it wasnât on a punk record. Actually Iâm fine with it either way but I kinda wish the album didnât slow down for this song. But then again, the yelling in this section is just *chefs kiss*
That being said, when it does get up to pace, it slaps HARD and the âWir sind die Turken von morgenâ chant is delivered with power and thatâs true judge of this song
7/10 not bad not bad
MilitĂŒrk- Fehlfarben
saxophone...
the guitar solo..
Just fuck yes, they turned a highly political song into đđđșđșđđșđșđđș
Honestly? My favorite version. I think, at least
9/10, goes hard
KebabtrÀume - DAF (1980 single)
I both love how underproduced this sounds but also it gets points off because of it, come on, I KNOW you were starving in london but you could have made this sound... like.. not like a demo.. đ (/hj, i like the vibe of it)
Slaps hard, funky synths go well with the somewhat badly played bass and distorted guitar
I donât know what it is about this recording but I LOVE gabis vocals on this version
no chant. bad.
7/10
KebabtrĂ€ume- DAF (version from FĂŒr Immer)
polished, no longer sounds like a demo
the first version I heard
Itâs good! Itâs a solid DAF track, one of my favorites
THE END THE CHANT FUCK YES
8/10 very good
please add your thoughts if you have them
#donât know why I did this#also!!! this song is very political!! I donât necessarily agree with what the song says but on the flip side to that#I donât know too much about the context of it. like I know germany has Turkish immigrants but Iâm not gonna comment on it because I donât#know much about it so please donât take this as a political thing I just like this fucking song too muchđđ#starving tw#?#ask to tag

Oh biggest of moods.
But also? Time is a flat circle, this is basically what people did with pigeons too. They were useful and then people fell in love with them and that's why we have all the goofy breeds of them(I say, thinking about the turken chicks I saw last week. Yes, tukens.).
Yâall, Iâm over here DYING cuz Google suggested me this article about the crisis of backyard chicken keepersâ which is that they love having chickens so much that they keep getting more, and then donât know what to do with all the eggs.
Which I can see how this would be a problem, but itâs just so funny to me because they had interviewed this one guy who started off with 3 chickens, and then kept adding more and more, and eventually started donating the eggs to a local food bank, and at the end of the year when they wrote him a tax receipt, he discovered heâd donated over 400 dozen eggs.
Seriously, it was a whole article talking very seriously about how people are so into chickens that they just keep collecting them like pokemon and then have to âscrambleâ (their words not mine) to get rid of the eggs, because they werenât even thinking of egg production, they just loved having chickens.
And while I may be over here laughing a bit too hard, honestly? Big Mood.

Our hen house always feels like a manger on a cold night. All the hay, all the animals. All the wonderful sounds. Ducks, roosters and hens roosting. Baby chicks brooding. Eggs waiting to be picked. Rabbits digging burrows. A barn cat keeping others out. A dog policing the area. Geese sounding alarms of intruders. I love all this. Our Christmas wish for everyone is to have an egg laying hen in your backyard. Fresh eggs! We want to help you make this wish come true. We have a few hens left for the season. Check with us soon though! Chicks hatching year round. Today we have chicken mutts hatching, a few silkies, turkens and some black stars. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVZVXcmMWBe/?utm_medium=tumblr

For fun, Iâm just gonna list the breeds we have with pics of what they might look like as adults!! (These arenât my birds, just their breeds!) Hopefully I can keep them all straight đ
First we have our Silkies; very easy to identify since theyâre so unique. I think all of ours are going to be the normal white, but I love how their blue âearsâ show up against the white đ I hope they get this fluffy â€ïž
Then next we have Turkens, our other more ornamental breed. Two brown and one black so I think theyâll end up looking a bit like this đ„°
We have Jersey Giants that might be blue, might be black? These guys are massive but notoriously sweet, and it seems to hold true because theyâre the most docile of my chicks â€ïž
We have one Brahma; a classic yet still beautiful breed!
We also have one Maran. Similar to the Brahma since they have fluffy feet, but much darker in color.
We have two different colored Orpington chicks, one black and one buff so theyâll be chunky and beautiful
I think the prettiest birds in our flock will be our Wyandottes! We have three and Iâm excited to see their final colors đ„č
Just daydreaming about what my chickens will look like when theyâre all grown up đ„°
#part 2/3#not quite done with all the breeds yet but picture limits lol#chickens#ducks#poultry breeds#raising poultry#cottagecore#daydreaming#journal entry

The Bare Facts of The Naked Neck Chicken
By Casey Love â According to the APAâs American Standard of Perfection, the breed name is Naked Neck, but many of us also know them as Turkens. The Naked Neck chicken was developed from the desire for a smooth-skinned, dressed fowl. Their bare areas made plucking easier and quicker, as they have less than half the feathers of other comparable fowl.
They are good brown egg layers and tolerate cold climates well. Standard weights are 8-1/2 lbs. for cocks, 6-1/2 lbs. for hens, 7-1/2 lbs. for cockerels and 5-1/2 lbs. for pullets.
Naked Neck chickens are an unusual chicken breed but very great birds to handle, work with, and take to poultry shows. Itâs again Naked Neck chicken time for me. My little ones arrived March 19th and 29th this year, and they are thriving very well and getting big.
Naked Neck chickens are an odd bird to look at, and many people are baffled when they see them. The origin of the Naked Neck chicken is fuzzy: they have been tracked to Europe where they are called Transylvania Naked Neck chickens. And thatâs no fib; they are hatched with zero feathers on their necks and sparse on their vent (bottoms). As they grow, most of the males will grow âbeardsâ mid neck and are quite impressive. The females can also grow these beards; Iâve had both sexes with these beards.
Blackie was one in a pen of three first-place winning Naked Necks at the 2006 fair open class. This photo was taken when she was a spring chicken.
I am a member of the Rural Routers 4-H group and I raise Naked Neck chickens at my Papa and Grandmaâs house. The photos in this article are from my 2006 first prize open class pen that consisted of a very large white, black and yellow rooster, and buff and purple/black hens.
When you work with these animals they always end up with names, and these were Big Boy, Blackie, and Buffy. This pen was unique, and I feel the judges saw how beautiful these birds were and how easy they were to handle, despite their size.
This is Big Red; itâs not hard to see how he got his name! He is from our first batch of Naked Neck chickens. These birds grow to an impressive size. Though they are not the prettiest birds, they are awesome.
Like any chicken, the males can be very territorial about their girls. Itâs best to have more hens than roosters with this breed. (One attacked my grandma! Sheâs okay though.)
Some things about my Naked Neck chickens are that they love sparkly things and adore my momâs rings. They love to be burped at, meaning they make a noise when content and it sounds like buuurp, buuurp, buuurp.
They can get sunburned, so if you decide to get some make sure they have shelter from the sun! And they arenât bad eating either. We had nice, big, roaster chickens and lots of delicious homemade chicken soup this winter!
This fine-looking cowboy is author Casey Love. Casey received an A grade on his pen of Black Frizzle Cochins and was awarded 5th place showmanship at the Isabella County Fair in Michigan 2006. He is a member of the Rural Routers 4-H group in Michigan.
Do you have stories/pictures to share of your Naked Neck chickens? Please share! Weâd love to hear from you!
