Week in Review
11/10/2024 – 11/16/2024
Sunday
Week 40 of missing Cipher Academy
Love Live Superstar Episode 6 MADE ME CRY AGAINNNNNNNN KEKE MY BABYYYYYY YOU’RE WORKING SO HARD FOR YOUR DREAMS AND I’M GLAD YOU DECIDED TO PURSUE IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY I LOVE YOUUUUUU AND THE NEW SONG IS SO GOOOOOOOOOOD IT’S LIKE IT WAS MADE JUST FOR ME Now I just need them to give me at least a clean version of the 30 seconds of acoustic Hoshizuku Cruising on the season 3 OST CD and I’ll be satisfied and set for life. Please Bushiroad. (Also the parallels between Keke’s story and Liyuu’s real life journey to become a seiyuu and idol in Japan makes me emotional to think about…)
Monday
Undead Unluck good!!!!! UNDEAD UNJUSTICE… What an amazing parallel. Tozuka’s always been good at parallels and foils and call backs, but this is just so peak.
Tuesday
Landed back home and had to sleep for like forty hours to recover
Wednesday
Oshi no Ko finally ended and man…it feels so far from the manga I initially read and felt excited for. All I can really say at this point is LMAOOOOOO I was taken in by its seemingly down to earth take on the ins and outs of the Japanese entertainment industry with a dash of social commentary about parasociality, but the finale just devolved into unbelievable melodrama and I had to check out at that point. I don’t know, for a story supposedly about the “dark side of the industry,” it never felt like it was really examining and interrogating any systemic issues; instead it all boiled down to a few bad actors (with baffling motivations), and a final thesis you could find in any basic idol show. It hurts because I was really really into this story at the beginning, but with this flop of an ending I’m going to have to give it a 3/10.
Hung out with a friend and caught up on some Dropout shows. First we watched the Make Some Noise episode with Jess, Ross, and Geoff and it was decently funny. Then we started watching Gastronauts, and I honestly love this show so much… I love cooking competition shows already, and seeing Dropout put their own spin on it is so much fun. I love that the challenges are purposely ridiculous and out of the box – I like to imagine that the chefs had a good time flexing their creativity rather than just exhibiting their skills in a straightforward head to head. And then all the food looked sooooooooooooooooooo good it was honestly driving me a little insane. I’m really going to look forward to new episodes of this on a regular basis.
Thursday
Read the latest chapter of Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 and man this series is so much more fun when I can binge the whole thing…when will I learn… But this was a cute chapter regardless, just doing a bunch of testing and inventing.
Read the entirety of I Want to be a Wall in one sitting and it’s cute! As with most Yen Press queer manga pick-up’s, it’s kind of baby’s first introduction to its central topics of asexuality and marriage inequality, but it was nice to see it explored from the perspective of these adults with their various familial and social pressures (the stuff about the stigma of not having kids really got to me). It got a tad melodramatic for me towards the end, but it was sweet enough that I’ll let it slide. 7/10.
Caught up on One Piece because I heard that bangs Robin was back AND SHE DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!!!! I MISSED HER BANGS SOOOO MUCH and it’s kind of a relief to finally start a brand new arc, I’m going to do my best to pay attention and remember things this time as things develop lol I love the Norse mythology theming and whatever Loki’s got going on, but I hope this giant tree with its various levels isn’t just a retread of Impel Down.
I read Itou-san on a random Twitter recommendation for dark yaoi and just felt underwhelmed lol Maybe it was a pioneer in its time, but to me it just felt like the most generic edgy romance story in the world. It was like a teenager’s conception of what a whirlwind romance with an assassin would be like (coupled with a teenager’s conception of what a super duper evil assassin organization would be run like), and it just didn’t compel me. Unfortunately I’ll be giving it a 2/10.
