Rules Free Radio Dec 26
Tuesdays 2pm - 5pm EST Rules Free Radio With Steve Caplan bombshellradio.com On the next Rules Free Radio with Steve Caplan, we say goodbye to 2022 by saying goodbye to a number of artists we lost just in the last couple of weeks. In this first hour, we’ll listen to the music of an extraordinary drummer, Dino Danelli, best known for his work with the 60s band that started out as The Young Rascals, later becoming The Rascals. We’ll hear his music with them and a couple of other bands he played with. Terry Hall was a singer with a number of popular and influential bands starting in the late 70s with the Ska revival band The Specials, then Fun Boy Three, The Colour Field, and more. We'll hear from a number of those groups. In the second hour, we’ll spotlight bassist Rick Anderson from the band The Tubes and also Welsh Blues Rock guitarist with the longtime band Savoy Brown, Kim Simmonds, with a few complementary tunes by others mixed in. The third hour starts with a sampling of just a few of this year’s Jazz releases, and we’ll end with a special tribute to Canadian singer-songwriter Shirley Eikhard. In addition to hearing her music and songs, I’ve got some excerpts from an exclusive interview she did earlier this year with Canadian broadcaster Barry Smith on his show This House of Musicians that ran on RealityRadio 101 this past February. The Rascals - It's Wonderful Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul - Lyin' In A Bed Of Fire The Rascals - See Fotomaker - Where Have You Been All My Life The Young Rascals - What Is The Reason The Young Rascals - Come On Up The Specials - Monkey Man - Specials The Specials - Sock It to 'Em J.B - More Specials The Colour Field - Things Could Be Beautiful Fun Boy Three - Our Lips Are Sealed The Specials - Friday Night Saturday Morning The Colour Field - She Fun Boy Three (with Bananarama) - It Ain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It) Jimmie Lunceford - 'Tain't What You Do (It's The Way That Cha Do It) The Specials - Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think) The Tubes - Don't Touch Me There The Shangri-las - The Dum Dum Ditty The Angels - Wow Wow Wee (He's The Boy For Me) The Tubes - Talk to Ya Later Tony Valentino - Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama The Tubes - White Punks On Dope The Tubes - What Do You Want From Life Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime Kim Simmonds - Struck By Lightning (Reprise) Little Feat - Walkin' All Night Savoy Brown - Tell Mama Savoy Brown - A Hard Way To Go Zephyr - Going Back to Colorado Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times (Live O2 Arena, London - December 10, 2007) Savoy Brown - Stranger Blues Oded Tzur - The Lion Turtle Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, Brian Blade - Long Gone Emile Parisien - Madagascar Gerald Clayton - Just a Dream Shirley Eikhard - I Just Wanted You to Know Barry Smith - Shirley Eikhard Interview Bonnie Raitt - Something To Talk About Barry Smith - Shirley Eikhard Interview Shirley Eikhard - Something To Talk About Barry Smith - Shirley Eikhard Interview Shirley Eikhard - Say You Love Me Shirley Eikhard - On My Way To You Read the full article

Hello, I am suddenly overcome by a lot of Steve and Barry feels, so here we have some headcanons for Room Enough AU that involves these two nerds and their weird ass relationship that Hal thought was going to be great but ended up being a fiery crash from the very beginning:
They, and I cannot stress this enough, hate each other from the get-go. Why, you may ask, and that’s a very valid question, the thing is that neither of them really understand a 100% what it is that makes them so angry at each other. Barry has an inkling it has something to do with Steve ordering Natasha to close the portal without waiting for Tony to come back out. Hal hadn’t been there for the Battle of New York, and it boils Barry’s blood to think that Hal may have come back to Earth to find out his dear friend, the man whose life he tried to desperately save, had died because Captain-fucking-America had made a stupid call.
Barry tells him as much, as soon as the battle is over and Tony is safe back on Earth, saved by Superman before he hit the floor, and Steve gets all sort of defensive about it. The air gets too tense, lightning cracking between them (literally, too, because Barry) and before there’s a fight, Tony offers shawarma. It doesn’t compute in anyone’s brain that there is someone in world that doesn’t love Barry Allen, to be honest.
As has been said before, however, Batman sends them on clean-up duties together almost all the fucking time. Barry keeps making sarcastic comments all through their shift, buzzing from one place to the next and saying things about how he could’ve done this by himself. Steve retaliates, of course, by saying or doing irratating things that will grate on Flash’s nerves until they’re screaming at each other, again, and Natasha has to come break them up before there’s a fight in the middle of destroyed Manhattan and Tony and Bruce W have to pay for more of this destruction.
Barry will visit the tower regularly. He’s the official JL/Avengers liasion. Bruce W appointed him because bats are essentially blind and didn’t see (or didn’t care for) how much Barry and Steve despised working with each other. Hal is usually the second option, since he was the direct contact with Iron Man for the longest time, but Bruce feels like Barry is the better equiped member to observe, analyze and report. Not to mention he’s convinced everyone loves Allen (they do, except, you know, Steve).
So, Flash is at the tower at least once a month. Sometimes Batman will send him once a week, but that’s only at the very beginning, and it’s not like he absolutely hates running. When he’s there, he’ll stay at least one night to talk to the members, train with them (or in Bruce B’s case, get some science going) and generally try to get a feel on how the team is developing. He writes extensive reports. He absolutely hates it, but he likes spending time with the Avengers.
EXCEPT THERE’S STEVE, AND BARRY HATES HAVING TO TALK TO STEVE.
Their interactions are always so tense, even when they’re trying to be civil. Steve won’t talk about he’s experiences with the team and when he does, he’ll offer useless information that Barry can’t do much with. Bruce W is starting to see Steve as a problem and that’s when he starts asking Barry to “try a little harder” with the supersoldier. Does Barry hate it? Absolutely. Is he still going to do it? He’ll wine to Tony at the workshop daily, but he does start trying to be as pleasant as possible to Captain Rogers.
On the other hand, once they become friends, it’s like everything falls into place! They start joking around each other! Barry shows Steve his favorites movies! They’ll cook together! Everyone is so surprised when they come back from the entire SHIELD was HYDRA all along fiasco, but it’s right and it feels right for them to finally be friends.
Barry becomes somewhat of a connection to the 21st century that the MC*U never allowed Steve to have. Tony is great, and he’ll explain everything to Steve if he allows him, but sometimes Stark’s rambling can get a little bit disorienting. It doesn’t mean Steve loves Tony any less, it’s just difficult to keep up with him sometimes. Barry, on the other hand, always slows down for Steve. Funny, because he’s a speedster, but he’ll do it for Steve.
Barry actually writes up two timelines for Steve using his eidetic memory and general speed. One of them is the Serious Timeline, that explains most of history’s important moments. They’ll sit down some days, and go through the years, trying to soak in as much knowledge as is humanly possible. The other one is the Pop-Culture Timeline, that Barry will fill with a bunch of things that he thinks Steve might’ve missed during his time under the ice. It’s mostly comprised of things that people in his daily life reference that Steve will completely miss, but Barry will explain in detail where those references come from--art!!! Books!!! Music!!! TV!!!
On a bit of an angst note: Barry will always stay closer to Steve on the days when he looks the most lost. He’ll do it because he knows Steve hates being cold, and he’s basically a furnace (Steve is a human heater, too, but Barry’s the upgraded version, so you know) so he’ll stick close to the supersoldier to at least cover that particular trigger. No more cold feet for the Captain America, okay?
On another bit of an angst note: remember how I said Barry sometimes forget which reality he’s in? Sometimes he’ll get really sad about the nicer timelines, when Steve and he are childhood friends, or middle school friends, or high school friends, or college friends or just, you know, friends, without the initial rocky start and the hurtful words and the fights. He’ll be so sad he never got to have Steve the way other versions of himself has Steve. He’ll get even sadder about never getting Bucky or Peggy.
On those days, Steve will sit with Barry and he’ll ask about any particular timeline that he’ll remember Barry speaking of before. (He’s made a list, so he can bring them up on command) “Hey, Barry, tell me about that one where you’re an olympic runner and I’m just the idiot who plays football in college” “Bar, what about when we were childhood friends?” “Tell me about Bucky. Tell me about how he got a good life.” “How does Peggy keep all of us idiots in line? How does Iris deal with us?”
It doesn’t matter how much it’ll hurt Steve to hear about the lives they never got, he’ll just listen to Barry speak for hours, and he’ll smile in all the right places and laugh at the shared jokes they’re supposed to have.
Barry and Steve, guys!!!!
#au;room enough for all of us#;long list of aus in my head#;american boys™#i'll probably have to change their tag at some point#anyways!!!!!#barry and steve are one of my favorite relationships to talk about in room enough au !!!!#because they've come a long way!!!!!#but also barry knows how much he's loved steve in many other universes!!!!#I LOVE BARRY AND STEVE GOODBYE!!!!!

So I know I mentioned Hawaii 5-0, and I think it illustrates perfectly what your mentioning. Steve had several inconsequential love interests throughout the years, the show was 10 seasons and I think she left s3, with maybe 2 appearances afterwards. Steve's main relationship (friendship/job partners) was with Danny and there was the usual subtext (I would even say baiting) between them which I'm sure shippers went crazy for, I wasn't in the fandom I just love 80s remakes. Danny wasn't even with anyone by the end of the show. Steven then realizes he needs a change, he is ready to leave the island and has a heartfelt goodbye with Danny. He gets in a plane, and guess who's in the seat next to him? Yeap, she came to see him, he's shocked, they kiss, they will travel together, the end!
This is an example of everything that you mention would not work with Mon-El being Kara's ending vs just the Legion/future. All I'm saying is this was done last year, and it was incredibly unsatisfying, so don't discount it. Mon-El being in the final fight is already more build up that this ship got.
@madeunmexico
You know, I actually have some hopes for the funeral. Sure, strictly speaking we don't know whether Mon-El will have any lines about it, but it makes me hopeful that it is a signifier that he is emotionally invested in whatever is going on in Kara's life.
Doing battle together and having a lot of fun fighting together is awesome of course, but within the world of superheroes it's also kind of standard procedure. Like, Kara definitely is also having fun fighting side by side with Barry, but that doesn't mean them exchanging a kiss would feel reasonable.
(though of course fighting by each other's side has special meaning to Karamel's relationship "I have loved fighting by your side" and all that)
Not sure that it would be enough to justify a kiss, but it would make them leaving together feel better. Toss me one or two soulful conversations and I personally am sold. But then again, I'm a cheap date when it comes to Karamel.

It was time to open Scoops Ahoy and Robin had brought a guest. The guest was a girl. Not Robin’s girlfriend, but just a friend. A special friend. She was living at Robin’s house after moving to Hawkins, so people often asked if she was related to her or not. Alas, these two lovely ladies were not related, just the best of friends. Some would even say they were like two peas in a pod.
Robin shoved open the door to the backroom, giving the mystery girl a tour. She explained things when the girl asked questions, and she waited patiently when the girl needed a few seconds. Robin Buckley was pretty much a different girl when this one was around. She went around the room, showing her friend the things she loved about working at Scoops. Finally, the time came to introduce her to Steve.
The brunette dragged her friend to the counter, “Y/n, this is my coworker, Steve Harrington. Steve, this is Y/n L/n.”
Steve waved at Y/n, smiling at her before turning to Robin. “Is this your new girlfriend or something?”
Y/n burst into laughter as soon as the sentence left his mouth. Robin shortly joined in, leaving Steve to awkward laugh because he didn’t get what was funny about a question. “No, no. I’m not her girlfriend, although she never told me that she came out to anyone besides me...Anyways, I’m just a friend.”
"Just a friend...so you’re straight then?”
More giggles erupted from the girls, Steve making a face and raising an eyebrow to the action. “Harrington, you can’t just assume she’s straight because she’s not dating me.” Robin inhaled, calming herself from her episode of laughter so she could properly respond. “She is straight, but I mean, who’s to say she wouldn’t date me?”
Both girls exchanged looks and giggled again, confusing the poor teenage boy even more. Sadly, the mall was opened and people started racing to the ice cream place, so he had to drop the subject and move on. The good side was that Y/n agreed to talk to him during his lunch break. So Steve, excited to talk to the cute girl, watched the time, checking every 5 seconds. It didn’t help thought. Time felt like it was moving in slow motion, feeling like a whole decade went by once it was finally lunch time.
The two talked most of the time, Steve cracking random jokes that she genuinely laughed at. He learned about her love for painting, family, and y/f/f (your favorite fruit). In exchange, she learned about his passion and career of being a mom. Y/n didn’t believe him when he said he had kids, but after context was included with the explanation, she laughed and informed him that she would love to meet his kids.
After an hour or two of talking, it was time for Y/n to go home. “It’s my dad’s birthday today. I’ll see you tomorrow, yeah?”
Steve nodded and waved goodbye, earning a wave back. He sure was excited to see Y/n tomorrow...

Finally, the time came to introduce her to Steve.
The brunette dragged her friend to the counter, “Y/n, this is Steve Harrington. Steve, this is Y/n L/n.”
“Didn’t you already introduce us?” Robin’s eyes widened and she shook her head quickly.
“I don’t believe we’ve met before. I’m Y/n..as she said.” She shook hands with Steve, who kept making weird faces at Robin. “I’m sorry, do you have a problem with her or something?”
“No! I’m just confused...um do you wanna talk at lunch today? Get to know each other a little more?”
Y/n looked back at Robin. Robin shrugged so Y/n looked back to Steve, “Sure. What time is your lunch break?”
“Around 12, is that okay?”
“Mhm. I’ll see you then I guess...”
This time, Steve was more confused than excited. Why was she acting weird? Why was Robin acting weird? Was the day repeating itself or something? This was highly unusual. Soon, his lunch break was started, him walking rather than racing to go sit with Y/n. When he sat down, he saw her smile, maybe it was just a joke...
“So, you still wanna meet my kids?”
Y/n almost choked on her water. “Um.. you have kids? Aren’t you a little...well young?”
“What? Ooh.. no, remember? They’re just my friends who I call my children.”
“Sorry. I’m just...yeah... right now. Anyways, how are you?”
“I’m good! How’s painting going for you? Also, I got this y/f/f for you! It’s your favorite, right?”
“How do you know all of this about me. Robin said she’s never even told you about me. Are you stalking me or something?” She stood up, gathering her stuff. “Robin!”
“No! No, it’s okay!” Steve was panicking. What had he done wrong? Why couldn’t this girl remember what he had said before? Why was she assuming he would stalk her?
“Robin! I need to go, like right now!”
In less than a minute, Robin was racing around the corner. “What is it y/n?”
“Your friend. I think he’s stalking me or something, can I just go?”
“I’m not-”
“Zip it Harrington, I need to call Y/n’s dad and let him know she’ll be home early. Come on Y/n, it’s okay.”
Steve followed the girls to the back room, apologizing over and over to Y/n. She eventually left, still not replying to him. Then, Steve did one of the most Steve things ever. Pushing past crowds, he ran out to his car, following behind Y/n’s car as it drove to her dad’s house. When she pulled over, she ran inside, screaming for her father’s help.
“Dad, get this guy to leave me alone!”
Steve hopped out of his car, running to the screen door and knocking. An older man opened it. A buff looking teen in a mesh shirt stood behind the man. They didn’t look very happy. Steve guessed they were the brother and dad she talked about the day before.
“H-hello sir. Um...I’m Steve Harrington, I met your daughter yesterday.”
The man chuckled, opening the door all the way and walking out. “I don’t care, alright? You’re gonna leave her alone and never talk to her again. Now please, leave my home.”
. . .

Steve raced to the two girls so he could introduce himself. “Hello! I’m Robin’s coworker, Steve. Do you like to paint?”
The girl giggled, nodding. “Yes! Do you?”
“Well, I’m not that good at it, but maybe you could teach me?”
“Of course! I’m actually studying to be an art teacher, but since it’s the weekend and I have no homework, I’d be glad to help!”
It wasn’t the weekend. Today was Thursday. What day did she think it was? “Thanks! That means a lot to me.”
“Anytime! I’m Y/n.”
“And Y/n, has to go now.” Robin interrupted the two, sighing sadly.
“What? But I thought your mom said you should give me a tour?”
“Yes, a tour before you go home. Your dad wants you.”
“Oh yeah! It’s his birthday haha, catch you later Steve!” She waved and left the mall, only making Steve more curious. However, for the first time, his questions were answered when Robin pulled him into the back room.
“Steve. Her father banned her from staying here, thanks to you.”
“What did I do?”
“Oh Steve...she has amnesia. She’ll never remember you. That’s why she was so freaked out yesterday. That’s why she isn’t in school. That’s why she thinks today is the weekend. Her dad’s birthday was the day it all...happened.. You can’t have any form of relationship with her. She’ll never remember you.” Steve opened his mouth to respond before Robin interrupted him once again. “And before you say you didn’t plan on it, I’ve seen the way you look at her and how sad you were when she didn’t remember you.”
“Oh...what type of..amnesia?”
“Anterograde. She only remembers her family, me, my family, and some other things. She’ll never remember you or anyone she meets.”
Robin had faith that Steve would give up on Y/n, seeing as a person would want the girl to remember them if they were in a relationship...but the reasons of her faith were her opinion. Steve wasn’t going to give up. Not now, not ever.
Every day, Steve drove to the road to her house, finding new ways to get her attention so they could chat And so he could flirt. The first day he asked her for a jump because his car “wasn’t working.” The next day he was unsuccessful, waiting in his car with roses and a poster for her. Sadly, she dropped something in her car, not looking over to him because she was grabbing it. The third day went..well poor Dustin and Mike were scared out of their minds.
Y/n saw the two boys egging Steve while he was curled up in a ball on the ground, crying for help. She chased the kids until they were out of sight, then helped Steve wipe all the egg shells off of himself. Dustin and Mike didn’t forgive Steve for a bit.
Fourth attempt..Steve managed to get Eleven’s help, having her bump Y/n’s car into Steve’s, not damaging either, but still making it enough to scare Y/n. The teen jumped out, apologizing to Steve.
It was usually successful, Y/n always fell for his charms at the end of their conversations. At one point he even got her phone number, but he knew he could never use it.
He made her fall in love with him everyday. It made them both happy. And Y/n’s dad noticed. Today was around the 67th time he waited for her. Not to his favor, her dad showed up this time. Y/n had talked to him today but had to hurry home due to her father finding out of Harrington’s “meetings” with her. The buff brother of her’s was behind their dad again, possibly flexing his muscles to make up for something.
“Sir, I’m really sorry, I can st-”
“No, come with me. Sit in the back with y/b/n.” Steve nodded and did as Y/n’s dad instructed him to do. He was honestly to scared to argue.
When they arrived at the house, y/b/n and his dad took Steve to a shed. Inside the shed, a lovely voice was singing. The song wasn’t that familiar to Steve, but it seemed quite familiar to the men standing next to him. Y/b/n opened the door slightly, allowing them to see Y/n as she painted a mural on the walls.
“I can’t smile without you, I can’t smile without you. I can’t laugh, and I can’t sing, I’m findin’ it hard to do anything!” She dipped her paintbrush into the paint before continuing. “You see I feel sad when you’re sad, I feel glad when you’re glad. If you only knew, what I’m going through, I just can’t smile!”
Closing the door, her father turned to Steve. “She sings this every day that she meets you. It was her mom and I’s wedding song.”
Steve felt honored, even blushing a bit. He really meant a lot to the girl, and he didn’t even know. Even if she couldn’t remember him the next day, it was making him, Y/b/n, and Y/n’s dad happy.
“It makes me think of her mother, and that makes me glad. I originally was going to make you stop when I had found out...but it makes her day.”
Y/b/n scoffed. “But dad. This guy-” He had a lisp. That’s why he was flexing and not speaking. He was flexing so he could make up for lisp. What was so wrong with having a lisp? Maybe he was insecure? Steve didn’t think anything bad of it though.
“Oh shut up y/b/n. Just, keep doin’ what you’re doin’ Steve.”
“Sir yes sir.”
“You don’t have to call me sir, son. Call me y/d/n. And don’t let y/b/n bother you, okay?”
Steve nodded and waved goodbye to the father and son duo, thinking of the next time he would see Y/n. Thinking of new ways to make her fall in love with him. Maybe he’d sing that song to her.
. . .
Robin Buckley was pretty much a different girl when this one was around. She went around the room, showing her friend the things she loved about working at Scoops.
The brunette was just about to go find Steve so she could introduce him to her friend, however.. Steve had other plans.
“I just can’t smile! Now some people say, happiness takes, so very long to find. Well I’m findin’ it hard, leaving your love behind me! And you see, I can’t smile without you, I can’t smile without you! I can’t laugh and I can’t sing, I’m finding it hard to-” A smile found it’s way onto Steve’s face upon seeing the girls. “Well hello Robin. Who might this lovely woman be?”
Y/n blushed, looking down and moving a foot behind the other in shyness. “I’m y/n. You listen to Barry Manilow too?”
“Fuck yeah I do! Can’t Smile Without You is my all time favorite song.” He felt bad lying, but his heart was begging to see her smile. Plus, he was sure that y/d/n would enjoy that as well.
“Same! It was my mom and dad’s wedding song, so I love it even more. Do you by chance, have time to chat during your lunch break?”
. . .
It had now been a year or so since Y/n had met Steve for the actual first time, and now they had exchanged a kiss a couple times, even gone on dates. He was in love with the woman who could never remember him. Steve was planning on treating Y/n to an ice cream cone as a gift when they “met” but...today wasn’t the best of days for Y/n L/n.
She had the tour as usual, meeting Steve in the special way he made for that day. It all ended horribly though. Steve and Robin walked Y/n to the parking lot, when Y/n noticed a police officer looking at her car and writing a ticket. Robin gave Steve the most terrified look that he’d ever seen.
“What!? You’ve gotta be kidding. Um sir, the tags don’t expire for seven months!”
“They expired May of this year.”
“No! No! No! They expire May of next year!”
Steve rushed over with Robin and another worker by his side. He didn’t know what would happen, but he knew it wouldn’t be good. “Officer I think there’s been a mistake.”
“Well I don’t.” the officer handed Y/n the ticket.
“No, this is ridiculous. I’m not paying this! It’s October!” Y/n turned to the worker, who had a newspaper in their hands. She swiped it from them, “Excuse me, can I borrow this?” The worker nodded as Y/n opened it to the date. “Look, Oct-ober.”
Robin had reached for Y/n’s arms, trying to stop her from reading it. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful. “Come on Y/n, let’s go back inside.” She knew she was too late by the time Y/n’s face contorted in confusion.
“...What?” Y/n ran to the newspaper box by the door of the mall, grabbing them all out and looking at the dates. “What!?” Running back to her car, she drove home. She demanded to know what was going on. Why was everything wrong?
Her questions were answered. Her father showed her the stack of old newspapers he had printed out from the day of the crash. It was too much for her to handle. She ran outside, crying. The men, including Steve, chased after her, leading them to a dock near her house. She screamed out, asking why. Her father handed her a folder, full of the documents and pictures from her injury..she asked if she could go to the hospital to hear it for herself.
. . .
Y/n was told to sit in front of the TV as a man with nice looking hair put in a VHS tape. When the tape played, her eyes filled with tears, she laughed at some points, but that didn’t mean the tears weren’t there.
“Good morning Y/n! You’ve missed a bit in the past year. Especially some funny moments. So, I came up with a way for you to remember them.” Steve’s prerecorded voice came out through the TV. Recordings that Robin took of Steve and Y/n played, then some of Y/n and Robin, there were even some of Steve’s “kids.” Y/n giggled when she saw a small recording of Dustin mimicking Steve’s hair with his own, teasing him for his love for Y/n. “Ignore that little video...anyways that was Dustin. He’s my favorite kid, but you’re my favorite person.”
Y/n looked over to Steve, who smiled back and gestured to the TV. The final part of the video played, showing the contents of the folder to Y/n. Y/d/n and Y/b/n made curious glances at Steve.
The video had ended with Steve being recorded by Max. “I know what you’re thinking Y/n, and I know that you’re probably confused. Just know that I love you, your dad loves you, Robin loves you, your brother loves you...even Dustin and Mike love you after you chased them and gave them a run for their money. The point is, you are loved and supported, we will always be here for you.”
Steve sighed. He didn’t know if Y/n would react differently than the way she did when she found out with her parking tickets or not.
He was soon found in a warm embrace from his forgetful girlfriend. “So, you’re the man I dream of? That explains a lot..” She may have forgotten him in her brain, but her heart would always remember the man who stole itself from her.

Collaborations #1 (’Shriekback are Seeing Other People’)
Well, collaboration is everything really innit? No man is an island, not even the ones who pretend they are. That’s what I reckon. Merging somebodys’ talents and energies with yours. What a thing. The very stuff of life.
Still, it can be a fractious business: politics will come into it. LIke: who’s in charge here? Who gets to say whether your bit is better than my bit? And how do we work that shit out? A microcosm of the world or what?
Undeterred, we seem to do it (collaborate) quite a lot. And these are some pretty successful tunes, I would say. Good for us. Bold and resolute Shriekback!
So there’s Hope, right?
(BA)

CARL’S TRACKS:
Words Fail Me
with AMANDA KRAVIT
(Barratt/Marsh)
David Barratt and I were introduced to Amanda by John Mrvos, one of the A&R team at EastWest Atlantic in New York (Happyhead’s label) - she was his girlfriend and he wanted to get her recorded, basically, so we came up with this. Dave had done some kind of publishing deal that allowed him to sample the company catalogue, hence Ravi Shankar playing sitar all over it. Backing vocals by Bill Clift; some of the drums sound like Jim Kimberley, sampled from HH sessions (1992ish.)
The Longest Goodbye
with BILL CLIFT
(Clift/Marsh)
I’ve written loads with Bill under various banners, of course. This is a mid-90s demo recorded in Bill’s flat in Greenwich. BVs by Stella Clifford and Marilyn Gentle, bass (I think) by Gary Brady… not sure who did the wibbly organ. This song was later recorded by Bill’s band Fuzzbuddy, re-titled Killing Me Now - it’s just been re-released as part of their Complete Studio Recordings compilation.
THE PALACE DOGS
with GEOFF WOOLEY
I’ve collaborated with Geoff Woolley since Out On Blue Six, and in school bands even before that. These two tracks, from around 1995, are both built from sampled TV shows (and therefore subject to all sorts of potential copyright issues…).
Queen of Peoples’ Hearts
(Marsh/Woolley)
The self-styled QOPH’s Panorama special, cut up and pumped up with added Dario Argento and a spot of Jeremy Paxman. The Original is all-electronic; the Guitar Version has not only mine and Geoff’s rhythm bits but some wildfire lead from Steve Bolton (Atomic Rooster, Paul Young, The Who etc. and currently fronting the mighty Dead Man’s Corner). Take yer pick.
Crazy Dames
(Marsh/Woolley)
The main voice and piano on here are from a 1961 Twilight Zone episode called The Midnight Sun, in which the Earth is knocked out of orbit and is spiralling towards the Sun… it gets hot. Other vocals by Stella Clifford and Marilyn Gentle.
GASWERKS
The Ying Tong Song
(Milligan)
Basically the same format as The Palace Dogs with the addition of Bill Clift, whose idea it was to knock out a dance version of The Goons’, er, classic. Dig that crazy rhythm, indeed. We were told the novelty song market was a hard one to crack… by the singer of Black Lace, who should know, I suppose…
WOOLLEY/MARSH
The Girlfriends Of Dorian Gray
(Barratt/Marsh/Woolley)
David Barratt came up with the conceit of a modern Dorian Gray who preserves his youth (or immaturity) not by having a grotesquely ageing portrait in the attic but by having an ever-changing string of girlfriends who absorb the consequences of his many flaws and are discarded one after another. Dave sketched out the chorus and then proposed that he, I and Deni Bonet (NY-based violinist and writer that we’ve worked with on various projects) should write our own versions of the story, possibly with the idea of creating some kind of meta-version combining them all. That never happened, but I like the track Geoff and I came up with and the lyric is nice and tricksy - shades of Costello, maybe, if I say so myself.
You’re The Only One
(Marsh/Woolley)
A re-write of a Happyhead demo, switching New York electronica for some 90s Britpop vibes, it sounds like. Bit of a kinky ménage à trois scenario with reasonably loud guitars. Nice.
BARRY’S TRACKS
The Frances & Martine poems, with Hilda Sheehan (2014)
part 1: GLOW, GOOSE, CORN-REMOVER
part 2: COAT, ARM, KNOB OF BUTTER
I met Hilda Sheehan - through the (surprisingly vibey) Swindon poetry scene when I was stationed back there for 10 years in '04. She was often the star turn at their spoken word events and, I thought, had the mark of a real artist in that she came with her own self-contained world (’magical realist Northern UK kitchen sink’, if I had to describe it).
I thought it would be fun to 'set' (as they say) some of her poems to music and so I did. From Hilda's considerable oeuvre, I picked the Frances and Martine series - I liked F&M's mutually abrasive dependence - the key ingredient in any sitcom - and the succinct and sometimes brutal nature of each of their adventures.
Dame Hilda Sheehan
The Anaxaton6 EP with Mike Tournier (2013)
I first worked with Mike Tournier (Big Mike as opposed to Little Mike - these were Flukes' Contrasting Mikes at the time) as producer on their OTO album c.94. Techno outfit Fluke apparently liked them some Olde Shriekback (they had worked previously with Wendy and Sarah) and thought I might add something to the project.
It turned out that producing a techno band is every bit as awkward as you might imagine (there’s only one computer screen for a start) and we abandoned the collaboration after I'd failed to insert myself into Fluke's process in any useful way (sandwich run doesn't count).
Anyway, we stayed in touch and collaborated rather more successfully on a Fluke/Shriekback tune and performance for MTV.
It was the redoubtable Julian Nugent, Fluke's manager, who got in touch - in 2013 to suggest that Mike and I might like to try knocking up a tune together.
I liked the idea of this straightaway. Mike can produce huge, hi-torque productions and I had an idea of a songwriting approach which I though might complement this. The vocalist would be recognisably the bloke out of Shriekback but CG’d with florid new appendages. I fancied some mad-as-a-rat lyrics (Welcome to their secret sign: Boola Stack! Haunted Lego of the Mind! Boola Stack!) but the music would be slick and vivid and solidly crafted because that's always how Mike rolls. Thus you get something quite absurd being taken very seriously which is, to my mind, the best thing you can possibly have.
extract from the sleeve notes:
BONE MARAUDER tells of a pure love, painful engorgement and hog sorcery.
JUJUGRID (GO LIVE!) wrangles with hedonic guilt, ecclesiastical turpitude and leaves everything else the fuck alone.
BOOLA STACK! - There are so many things to say of Boola Stack that to ennumerate them insults us both.
NO FOOL BOLETUS... let's just be clear about this: you got nothing to hide, there's no need to worry. Be lucky.
Michaele don Turino and Bleary Android are the naked mortals chained to the husky obelisk of ANAXATON6

Billboard #1s 1974
Under the cut.
Steve Miller Band – “The Joker” -- January 12, 1974
It always throws me when I remember how old this song is. Two years older than me, and yet I associate it with my own mid-20s partying. Okay, my "partying" was pretty mild. One of the things my friends and I often did was go to a dueling piano (really keyboard) bar, and they always played this song. I can taste the rum and Coke now. We had tipsy discussions about what "pompatus" meant. A guy tried to pick one of my friends up with "really love your peaches." Anyway, I love this song, but it's also so embedded into my life that I can't judge it fairly.
Al Wilson – “Show And Tell” -- January 19, 1974
1970s Philly R&B is great music. This is a pretty typical example of the genre; lots of strings, lots of horns, an adult with a voice he uses like an instrument to impart strong emotions. It's a love song, and the lyrics aren't anything spectacular, but they do the job. Very good.
Ringo Starr – “You’re Sixteen” -- January 26, 1974
GAH. Next!
Barbra Streisand – “The Way We Were” -- February 2, 1974
I was tempted to write, "GAH. Next!" here too, but I'm determined to save that kind of thing for songs that have elements to them that I don't want to discuss because of moral issues. That's not this. The problem is: I hate Barbra Streisand. Or I should say I hate her singing; though from what I've seen of her personality, I don't like that either. Every song she sings, she sounds like she's singing to the glory of the greatness of the only person who matters to her in the world: Barbra Streisand. I once read an article that called her singing "masturbatory," but that's not strong enough. It's full-on self-worship. I hate it.
The Love Unlimited Orchestra – “Love’s Theme” -- February 9, 1974
This is Barry White's orchestra, but sadly it's an instrumental, without his glorious voice. It reminds me so much of the Love Boat theme that now I'm wanting to watch it. Absolute kitsch, but as kitsch goes, there's worse.
Terry Jacks – “Seasons In The Sun” -- March 2, 1974
The singer is dying and saying goodbye to everyone. That kind of sentiment may be made to work in pop, I suppose, but I've never heard it done. It belongs in opera. This is schmaltz.
Cher – “Dark Lady” -- March 23, 1974
As one of only a couple dark-haired dark-eyed girls in my quite blonde high school graduating class, people used to call me "exotic." Apparently my high cheekbones had something to do with it too. I was asked where my family was from pretty regularly. I wasn't offended -- more bemused. The answer is "Europe," though I guess the dark hair and eyes are probably by way of France. It's rather tough to say, considering my mother's side of the family has been here since the 16th century (indentured servants), and were not the rich types who stuck to their own ethnicity. Anyway, this is to say that I feel some kinship with Cher, and how drawn she was to songs like "Dark Lady." Though in this case, the "dark lady" is someone Cher's character murders for cheating with her boyfriend. She kills the boyfriend too.
This song is dated ("gypsy music") Las Vegas cheese, and yet I like it. It's wildly melodramatic and fun.
John Denver – “Sunshine On My Shoulders” -- March 30, 1974
Bleeeeeh. I like big melodramatic songs. This is the opposite. Now, I do like small, sweet songs often too. But I just can't with this one. It's too slow, too simple, and feels aggressively, shallowly cheery.
Blue Swede – “Hooked On A Feeling” -- April 6, 1974
I learned from the Todd in the Shadows video about this song that its stupid "ooga chaka" thing was inspired by 1960's "Running Bear." Now I hate it even more! The original of this song is a nice, simple love song. Blue Swede made it shouty and dumb.
Elton John – “Bennie And The Jets” -- April 13, 1974
It's Elton John. Therefore I don't like it. I feel like it's too slow maybe? I feel like most of Elton John's songs are too slow maybe. I don't know. I'm bored.
MFSB & The Three Degrees’ “TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)” -- April 20, 1974
An instrumental disco track. It is one I find danceable, so there's that. Not bad.
Grand Funk – “The Loco-Motion” -- May 4, 1974
A rock cover of The Loco-Motion. Sure, why not. Though this version is not very good. It feels like they slowed it down, and they definitely made it extremely loud. I don't really see a reason for this song to exist.
Ray Stevens – “The Streak” -- May 18, 1974
Streaking was a fad in 1974. This is a comedy song about it. I had never heard it before this, and I hope never to again. It's deeply dumb.
Paul McCartney & Wings – “Band On The Run” -- June 8, 1974
The wee-oo-wee-oo-wee-oo thing at the beginning of the song sounds neat, but then it goes on too long. That's my feeling about this entire song: It goes on too long. It does change up substantially multiple times throughout, but it's no Bohemian Rhapsody. Bohemian Rhapsody is, imo, perfect. The pacing of "Band on the Run," otoh, is a mess. The second section needs to be a lot longer and the final section needs to be a lot shorter. Paul McCartney needed an editor for this.
Bo Donaldson And The Heywoods – “Billy, Don’t Be A Hero” -- June 15, 1974
A young woman tells her boyfriend to not "be a hero" when he goes off to war (probably the Civil War.) Because she wants him to come home alive. As anyone who knows this kind of song can predict, he decides to be a hero and dies. Cliche and weirdly bouncy for the subject matter. Still, at least songs were acknowledging that dying in war was not a great thing. Unlike the putrescent "Ballad of the Green Berets."
Gordon Lightfoot – “Sundown” -- June 29, 1974
The singer is jealously obsessed with a woman. He knows this isn't a good thing, but he doesn't seem able to -- or be trying to -- move past it. This is about something real; Gordon Lightfoot was obsessively, violently jealous over Cathy Smith, the woman who was later convicted for injecting John Belushi with the heroin that killed him. The lyrics are mean, but the music doesn't go hard at all. Except, compared to the rest of the stuff I've looked at for 1974 so far, the music does sound a lot harder -- it's minor key and there's a distinct bassline. It still feels like a mismatch.
The Hues Corporation – “Rock The Boat” -- July 6, 1974
A disco song I can dance to some. Not entirely. It's a song asking you not to "rock the boat" of your perfect love with the singer. It's incredibly schmaltzy -- schmaltzy disco. Ugh.
George McCrae – “Rock Your Baby” -- July 13, 1974
The singer is telling you, "woman," to take him in your arms and rock him. I.e. fuck him. I have perfect pitch. George McCrae is no Ella Fitzgerald. When he goes to the high note, he does not hit it right, and it's like nails on a chalkboard. I can't listen to this song all the way through.
John Denver – “Annie’s Song” -- July 27, 1974
Ugh, 1974. This is a simplistic love song to John Denver's wife. Not just simple, which is fine, but simplistic, which is not. They divorced years later, and Denver became violent during it. (Denver's the one who brought that to light and he obviously felt terrible about it.) The Stereogum guy was shocked by this. I'm not. For one, celebrity is horrible for people. For another, I can't think of any of Denver's songs that have depth or complexity. Trying to live at the surface is also horrible for people. I do like a lot of simple love songs, but John Denver's songs have always made me go "ick," even when I was a child. I feel like there's nothing in them.
Roberta Flack – “Feel Like Makin’ Love” -- August 10, 1974
The music to this song, with the calm but interesting percussion and romantic guitar, combined with Roberta Flack's whispery vocals, is lovely. It gives me asmr feels and makes me want to lie down and drift off to sleep. So, uh. Not exactly what I consider a sexy song. I do like listening to it, as it's nice and calming, but I don't think that was the intent.
Paper Lace – “The Night Chicago Died” -- August 17, 1974
And I will definitely need some relaxation after this garbage. Okay so, this travesty was by Brits who: 1) Thought there was an East Side of Chicago. That's Lake Michigan. 2) Thought it would be cute to write a song in which Al Capone tried to literally take over Chicago by killing all the cops (he bribed cops, he didn't kill them, and he was a criminal, not an insurrectionary.) 3) Sing "glory be" because they obviously think that's a super American thing to do. "In the land of the dollar bill." WHAT? This song makes me want to punt Paper Lace into the East Side of Chicago.
Paul Anka – “(You’re) Having My Baby” -- August 24, 1974
Notoriously one of the worst pop songs ever. The singer thinks "you" (that makes it worse) are having his baby solely and only because you love him. Monumental narcissism, just completely heinous, plus it's musical glop.
Eric Clapton – “I Shot The Sheriff” -- September 14, 1974
This is not Bob Marley's version. Bob Marley's version is so much better, and it's the one I've heard a lot, so when I turned this one on I was confused for a second.
Barry White – “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” -- September 21, 1974
Oh thank god. Barry White is one of my favorite singers, and this is one of my favorite songs. This is a sexy love song by a great artist.
Andy Kim – “Rock Me Gently” -- September 28, 1974
Andy Kim's voice sounds incredibly mid-70s. What's with men asking their lovers to rock them this year? The chorus is pretty good, and has a real beat. He's asking his lover to be gentle, and "I have never been loved like this before." That's nice. It's cheese, but it's fine.
Olivia Newton-John – “I Honestly Love You” -- October 5, 1974
A lot of the time when someone says they "honestly" something without prompting, they're lying. So this song sounds weird to me. "I love you/ I honestly love you" -- um, you sure about that? Though the singer has no reason to pretend she loves the person she's singing to, and every reason not to, since they're both with someone else. She just wants to tell you she loves you and leave it at that. Yeah, that's likely. Olivia Newton-John is a good singer, and she's especially good at acting a song. I feel she should have been on Broadway. In any case, while this is a slow soft song in an era with way too many of those, it's one of the better ones. It's not overly slow or particularly goopy.
Billy Preston – “Nothing From Nothing” -- October 19, 1974
If there's such a thing as vaudeville rock, this is it. He doesn't want to be your hero or your highness, so it sounds like he wants an equal relationship. He also says "I'm a soldier in the war on poverty," which makes it sounds like he's saying you have to have money if you want to get with him, but maybe not. He sings "you gotta bring a little something, girl, if you want to be with me," which may or may not be monetary. It's bouncy and all, but Billy Preston's done better.
Dionne Warwick & The Spinners – “Then Came You” -- October 26, 1974
A song about finally finding love. Plenty of good orchestration, a good beat, and of course Dionne Warwick's voice. I like it.
Stevie Wonder – “You Haven’t Done Nothin'” -- November 2, 1974
The "you" in this song is Richard Nixon. Stevie Wonder is one of the most love everyone, let's all come together artists in existence. But here, he was angry. "We would not care to wake up to the nightmare/ That's becoming real life/ But when misled who knows a person's mind/ Can turn as cold as ice." The Republican Party is still Nixon's party -- they love him almost as much as they do Reagan. This song is funky and good and the only reason I don't feel it more is that it's not angry enough.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive – “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” -- November 9, 1974
They were goofing around in the studio, and lead singer Randy Bachman wanted to make fun of his brother's stutter. When this song became a hit, Randy was mortified. But even with nasty, juvenile intentions behind it, this song is good. It also sounds happy and not mean at all. It's a rather silly song about first experiencing sex, and it's fun.
John Lennon – “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” -- November 16, 1974
John Lennon's voice was always kinda nasal, but it's really nasal on this song. Anyway, this song may as well be called "you do you." It's a song that in theory I should not find boring, but in practice I do. I have finally found out why: Elton John helped him with it. It sounds very Elton John-ish. Which means I don't really have anything else to say.
Billy Swan – “I Can Help” -- November 23, 1974
Some old-fashioned rockability is a nice change. The singer sees that the woman needs some help, so "let me help." "I got two strong arms/ Let me help." I immediately think of a romance between a farmhand and a widow woman. "It would sure do me good to do you good." That's a pretty concise description of love. Billy Swain's voice is kinda thin; Elvis did a cover of this, and it's a lot better. Billy Swain's version is sweet and all, but Elvis' is irresistible.
Carl Douglas – “Kung Fu Fighting” -- December 7, 1974
This isn't a song about actual kung fu; it's about kung fu movies. It's a fanboy telling you all about the cool movie he just saw, though not telling you a thing about the plot. Just the "expert timing" and stuff. Trying to analyze "Kung Fu Fighting" feels really silly. It's a rare enjoyable novelty song by an actual musician.
Harry Chapin – “Cat’s In The Cradle” -- December 21, 1974
A cover of this song by Ugly Kid Joe became a hit in 1992. And it was massively overplayed, so I hate this song. This father/son stuff bores me anyway, speaking of overplayed.
Helen Reddy – “Angie Baby” -- December 28, 1974
This song is deeply strange, which is a mark in its favor. It's a story song about a girl who has no friends and had to be taken out of school because she's "a little touched." She lives in a world of make-believe, listening to the radio all the time. A neighbor boy comes along to rape her. But as soon as he walks into her room... "Toward the radio he's bound/ Never to be found." He becomes her "secret lover," trapped in the radio. "It's so nice to be insane/ No one asks you to explain." Is Angie really "insane," or is she a sorceress whose rock n' roll powers everyone looks away from? Both? I'm not sure what I think of this song, but it is interesting, and that's always good.

heyy I don't know if you're taking requests but if you are could I request something for the teen daughter series where Barry's daughter starts talking to a boy and barry somehow finds out and gets overly protective? thanks I love your writing
A/N: Thank you so much for reaching out. This was such a fun request to write! Yes I did name the daughter’s crush after Steve from Stranger Things. And no, I’m not sorry! Hope you enjoy :)
“Well, this is me.”
You’re outside the gate of your apartment building. It’s pouring rain and you’re standing underneath an umbrella being held by your friend Steve. He’s your Chemistry lab partner and the two of you were studying together in the library after school.
“Thanks for walking me home,” you smile.
It started raining when the two of you were on the bus. Steve had an umbrella. You didn’t. He offered to walk you home.
“Of course! I couldn’t let you walk home in the rain. If you got sick, who else am I supposed to talk to to in Chem?” Steve smiles back at you.
You blush and momentarily look down at your feet. Steve’s cute, like really cute. You got along really well. It was so easy to talk to Steve and you enjoyed the playful banter. You had a crush on him, but you were too shy to say anything.
“I hope your place isn’t too far away. The rain isn’t letting up anytime soon,” you put your hand out to catch some raindrops.
“Yeah, I’ll be okay. I’m only a couple of blocks over. And I’ve got my music to keep me company,” Steve pulls out his iPhone.
As he shows it off to you, the screen lights up and you see the song next on the queue: This Feeling by Alabama Shakes.
“You like Alabama Shakes too? I love This Feeling! Such a great song,” you point to Steve’s phone.
Steve smiles and bits the bottom of his lip. He then holds out an earbud for you.
“Wanna listen?”
You nod and take the earbud. After placing it in your ear, Steve starts the song. You look into each other’s eyes, standing very close together. Almost touching. And then-
“Y/n!”
You look up and see Barry standing a few feet away, arms crossed in front of him. He had just arrived home from work and parked his car. While heading to the stairs, he saw you standing with some guy outside the gate and rushed over as fast as he could.
“Dad! Hi!” you’re a little startled.
You take the earbud out and hand it back to Steve.
“Hi,” Steve waves.
“Hi,” Barry’s eyes narrow in on Steve.
“Steve, this is my dad...Barry. Dad, this is Steve. He’s my partner...my lab partner. In Chemistry!” you awkwardly introduce the two.
“Nice to meet you, sir,” Steve puts out his hand for Barry.
“Hmmm”
Barry gives him a cold look. After a beat, he shakes Steve’s hand.
“Y/n, you should get inside. It’s getting late and it’s raining, I don’t want you to get a cold,” Barry tells you.
“Okay, dad,” you nod, then turn to Steve, “Thanks again for walking me home. I’ll see you at school tomorrow.”
“Anytime,” Steve smiles, “See you tomorrow.”
“Bye,” you give a small wave.
“Bye.”
“Good night, Steve,” Barry says coldly, breaking up this endless goodbye.
You and Steve exchange a quick look and a smile before he leaves. Barry holds the front gate door open for you and you go inside with him. You go up the stairs and Barry follows closely behind.
“What was that?” you raise an eyebrow at your father.
“What was what?”
“Why were you so weird with Steve?” you ask.
“I wasn’t weird,” Barry replies.
You look back and give him a dirty look.
“Fine. I’m your dad and I have a right to be suspicious of any guy you bring home,” Barry shrugs.
“He’s just a friend, dad,” you try.
“Hmmm”
You can’t help but smile to yourself. You hate to admit it, but sometimes you liked it when Barry got into overprotective dad mode. You didn’t really have anybody looking out for you like that when you were younger. You could tell that Barry actually cared and you liked that he was trying to look out for you in that way.
Barry unlocks the apartment door and nods for you to get inside first.
“Thanks Dad,” you give him a little kiss on the cheek as you walk into the apartment.
“For being suspicious of that guy? Of course! Next time he comes around, I’ll make him leave by force,” Barry teases, following you inside.
“Stop!” you laugh, “I meant thanks for looking out for me.”
“Anytime, kid.”
“Right now, Steve is just a friend but if he breaks my heart I’ll let you know. Until then, you’re just going to have to trust me,” you tell Barry before going inside your bedroom.
You close the door behind you and start playing This Feeling by Alabama Shakes. You wanted to finish the song that your father interrupted.
“She likes him…” Barry puts his hand on his forehead and mutters, “Shit!”

Long Black [3]
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 3,750
Summary: Bucky Barnes makes a decent coffee and some new information comes to light.
Warnings: Swearing, more slowburn pining, better made coffee, and a friend of Peter Parker’s.
A/N: This was a little harder for me to crank out, so apologies for any errors or anything that reads a little strangely – this has barely been proofread, because my week has been nuts in the Real Life department, yay. This series is for @ruckystarnes’ delightful 2K MCU Challenge – thank you love!
Long Black Masterlist here // Full Masterlist here 🖤
---------
Previously...
Feet pressed flat against the floor as your voice became lower now and he shifted closer, calming his mind to make out your words–
Bucky almost toppled as the door swung opened, metal fist still curled in an attack stance while the other broke his fall, and realised quickly you were standing over him.
“I was starting to wonder when you’d join us,” you told him, a glint in your pretty eyes.
He glanced past you to the glowing visage shimmering from the kimoyo beads on the bathroom sink and swore.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
---
There were three things Bucky Barnes despised in this moment of a decidedly disgusting Australian summer.
One, it was barely five hours into a new day and his arm, his head, and his entire godforsaken soul was already hot and melting through the floorboards into the eighth circle of hell.
Two, the air-conditioner clearly was out to get him, threadbare clothes clinging stupidly about his restless limbs and the bathroom tiles offering little cool respite.
Three, Sam fucking Wilson on the other side of the goddamn world, beaming like he just sucked gold from the tree of life, his face gleaming with glee from the kimoyo beads before him.
“Hey Tin-Man, enjoying yourself?”
“How the fuck–”
“Yo, that’s no way to speak to your favourite human.”
“Favourite pain in the ass–”
“That’s more like it.” Sam’s blistering grin shone firecrackers through the vibranium light of the transmission.
“Barry, don’t be like that,” you drawled, clear amusement awash across your pretty face, and leaned against the edge of the bathtub.
“Don’t they call you ‘Baz’ down under?” Sam tempted, paused. “No wait, ‘Bazza’, right?”
Bucky glared at the miniature laughing birdman. “How ‘bout you fly your ass down here and find out?”
“Nah, not a fan of summer,” Sam replied.
“You and me both,” you seconded, stretching your feet before you. “So where’s Rogers?”
“Got caught up with the King – some business.” Sam shrugged. “He’ll drop in soon.”
“Any news on Karpov?” Bucky asked, wanting to change the subject and curious as to how you both knew each other. The conversation seemed to flow easily between you and Sam, and Bucky felt a pang of… something that he pushed deep down in to the hollows of his chest.
“That’s classified, Buck.” Steve’s familiar, broad and charming form now replaced Sam’s, the other man’s bellowing laughter echoing away through the transmission all the same as he said his goodbyes.
“Clearly,” he replied, settling down beside you, close to touching and not quite, though wanting all the same in some strange way. “So what isn’t classified?”
“How’re you doin’?” Steve changed the subject. Asshole. “Enjoying yourself?”
“The entire 48 hours I’ve been here, sure.” Bucky answered coolly, grinning to rub in the facade and full-body hating the suffocating air.
“Bucky’s fine,” you chimed in. “You got my report?”
“The best parts of it, yeah,” Steve replied appreciatively, though his gaze fixed on Bucky. “You got nothing to report then?”
The guns, the knives, his unfailing ability to keep a secret. “Nope.”
Steve paused, face thoughtful, then schoolled clean. “Great, I guess I’ll leave you guys to it.”
“What, that’s it?” Bucky pushed himself off the bathtub, feet steeled against the tiles, nervous anger rising. “Don’t you have anything to report?”
“Nothing you need to know,” Steve replied, smiling ruefully.
“Steve–”
“You’re fine, that’s all that matters. I’ll be in touch soon.” He was signing off and Bucky was quietly livid now. “Take care, Buck. Agent.”
You nodded and the holographic beam of justice disappeared.
“Son of a bitch.” Bucky stood up quickly, lips pressed into a thin line and grabbing the toothbrush off the sink – something for his hands to do, keep his mouth from shooting off. He forced it through his mouth, fury simmering in the pit of his stomach.
“Keep going at that rate and you won’t have any teeth left, Baz.”
Bucky spat. Rinsed his mouth. You watched him comb water through his hair with his hands, habitually, hurriedly, pulling the familiar band from his wrist to tie the knot at the base of his neck.
The soft, sweet silence from the night before was now thick and strained.
“Look, he’s just trying to keep you safe,” you told him gently. “I’m trying to keep you safe.”
Safe. Safety. An saviour for some and a curse for others, an excuse to hide the full view, full knowledge of the world, its weight and pretensions from those less privilege to its workings.
“Do you know what it’s like to not be in control?”
Bucky was staring at you now, expression hard, grim, almost sad, all three washing light and shadow in his face.
“You’re in the passenger seat of your story,” he continued. “You don’t have the keys, you don’t see where the road turns and curves, and you sure as hell don’t get to decide if you want to go faster or slower, or open the goddamn door before the car flies off the cliff you’ve been hurtling towards for the better part of your goddamn life.”
He was breathing heavily now, frustration at boiling point and threatening to sheer off into the full blown resentment, his fists opening and closing, fingers twitching. A silent tremor floating through his body as he counted the moments between his exhales. One. Two. Three…
Long moments eased past when your hand came to rest on his, cool in his own, and he finally let himself look at you.
The rising sun seemed to colour your eyes in a way that softened the edges of feeling just a fraction, and it matched the swell beneath his chest that he quickly swallowed.
“I know,” you said quietly. “You have to trust this – if not me, trust Steve.”
“How can you know?” The words left him before his brain caught up. “How could you–”
“I lost someone.”
There was a sharp intake in of breath before Bucky realised it came from him. This wasn’t mentioned in your file, he’d have noted it if it had. Something in your voice had him still, quiet before you.
“A mission went too far, I let myself go along with it too long and she was gone before I’d even begun to comprehend what was happening.”
You swallowed, masking the dull ache in your heart with a thin, watery smile and it made his heart thud wildly, almost scared. “It happened, I spiralled, trained too hard, took too many missions – anything to try to regain some semblance of control I lost in that microsecond where it all went to shit.”
“I’m sorry–”
“It’s fine,” you cut him off, forcing your face into something familiar, feeling a little raw at letting this side of come free in the short hours of being in his presence – this wasn’t how you’d envisioned this mission to be. “It was years ago.”
“Doesn’t make it mean any less–”
“It’s fine,” you repeated, more to compose yourself. “Besides, you have a few hundred coffees to make today.”
Bucky watched as that breath of vulnerability slip back behind that iron curtain of humour, sarcasm, wit – all things you kept to shield you, to keep from growing too close.
“Right,” he answered, eyes regarding you evenly, small smile on his face, deciding to let you be. “When do we start?”
---
It was nearing the seventh hour when the day became something reminiscent of zig-zagging about live mines to get behind enemy lines.
In this case, the customer was the enemy and Bucky was really just trying to get by. He was good with orders, where patrons sat, the exact measure of time things should take more, take less – half barking orders, half livid that things weren't moving more efficiently that you had relegated him to serving. That required talking to people and Bucky hated people for the most part; he could count on one hand the total number of people he liked talking to and even less the people he pretended to talk at.
It was nearing closing time when you noticed his shoulders turn in a little, face a little exhausted, tired, though still bright behind the eyes when they needed to be. You would meet each other’s gaze every so often, small smiles exchanged across the expanse of laughter, conversation, customers, quick nervous glances when you were sure he wasn’t looking. Maybe the aunty was right – maybe handsome ones were good for business.
“Are you okay?”
Bucky glanced up and watched your nimble fingers turn the sign around the other way, reaching out the serving window to pull it shut, your body angling graceful and strong as the windows clamped shut.
“Yeah, all good,” he replied, quickly looking away as you turned to face him. He wandered down the other end of the cafe, scooping up the final plates, mugs, balancing them with ease on the tin trays, skin veil still bright beneath its shape. Bucky ignored the heat creeping slow beneath his collar.
You watched him wipe down the tables as he went along, muscle tensing under his sleeves, rolled to his forearms that pushed and pulsed as he pressed the cloth from one end of the table to the other. He worked quickly yet thoroughly, and distractingly so, and you had to turn away, choosing to focus on your own task of cleaning the coffee bar.
It was his first day, but he had learned quickly, interacted with the patrons, the ones that sneaked glances at him as he wandered deliberately between tables, the paying customers, that winning smile on his pretty face, those eyes blue and sweet on the older ladies, pretty men, sweeter women, even sweeter on the even smaller children. He’d bargained a few hours through the day to stay behind those coffee machines, confident his skills were good enough to warrant a break from people, his fingers working deliberately, dishing out lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos of foamy goodness, its chocolate snow patterned sweet.
Bucky – Barry, the name feeling strange on your tongue throughout the day – had dropped off the dishes at the kitchen, his voice carrying with ease as he chatted with the kitchen crew. You’d filled him in a little more on the landlord situation, wondering how he might fare with her charming brand of abrasive customer service. She’d considered him evenly earlier that day and he did the same, mutual respect and contemplative regard bargained between them in their short meeting.
For someone who spent the better part of the century as a prisoner of his own mind, he was charming, charismatic, and kind in his demeanor – part of his day job, him, you hadn’t quite decided yet. To go from serving lords of the underworld to the citizens of the world, to this little corner of the hot, tired earth – perhaps he was used to it. Resigned almost, though perhaps something else drove the perception that maybe he factoring in more than he let on – maybe his way of trying to keep some control of his surroundings.
“What?”
His voice was teasing, pulling you from your reverie as those blue-grey eyes brightened mischievously. The bun he’d tied earlier had come undone and mashed back up throughout the day, loose strands framing those cheekbones, those clear pools of blue in that pretty face whom many a patron appreciated, men and women and children alike.
“Hm?” Your fingers were focused on cleaning the coffee machine, grinder brushed and blown clean, surfaces wiped slow and considerately well. The second machine was running a double shot, dripping leisurely into a glass despite the late balmy afternoon.
“You,” Bucky continued, seating himself in front of the bar, gaze curious on the two glasses you pulled from the freezer. They were full of ice cubes. “You’re thinking about something – what’s that?”
“What?” you parried back, echoing his tone from earlier as you stirred a spoonful of some thick, cream-like substance, consistency like molasses into the finished coffee.
“That,” he nodded towards the glasses, watching the black and white layers turn to that familiar shade with your motions.
“Secret menu item,” you replied, divvying up the coffee between the two glasses and Bucky watched it carve paths toward the base of the glass, ice cracking on the way down.
“Try it,” you pushed a glass toward him.
This one was sweet, tart in the back of his throat until the welcome bitterness dallied about in his mouth. God, this one was good.
“That is really good,” Bucky said at last, half-groaning in satisfaction, halfway through his glass and half-considering another.
“I know it is,” you replied, flashing a grin at him, and it made his heart feel a little funny. He swallowed and watched you take a sip from your own before turning back to clean the second machine, its surfaces, trays.
You worked in silence for a while, feeling his gaze on you, listening to the ice clink about in his glass as he took sips, the creak of the leather stool he swivelled on – right, then left, then right again.
“Thank you, by the way,” Bucky said at last and you paused, turning to glance at him, taking in his sweet face.
“For what.”
“For making this,” he waved his hand a bit stupidly and regretted it, feeling his cheeks go a little hot. “Whatever this mission is, a little easier.”
A smile grew slow on your face and Bucky adored how it glowed sweet in your eyes. “Happy to,” you replied. “I mean, I wasn’t sure what to make of you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well,” you finished wiping down the machine and turned your focus to the bar itself, wiping it down, something to keep your hands occupied while you cleared your face. “I figured you’d be more reluctant about having someone like me.”
“...having someone like you.” You could sense the teasing in his voice and you rolled your eyes.
“As your bodyguard, dumb-ass.”
Bucky snorted. “Sorry, the opening was right there.”
“Oh, I know you’re a fan of openings.”
“Shall I list them for you or someone like you?”
“Christ, you’re so annoying,” you laughed, choosing to ignore the quiet giddiness in your heart. “Look, I can finish up here– yes, finish, Barry.”
“Hey, I didn’t say anything.”
“I heard you anyway,” you shook your head, though laughter glittered through your face. “You can head up first, shower or whatever.”
“Look, I’m not the one constantly making all these inappropriate workplace comments.”
“Go.” You shoved him playfully, off the stool and narrowed your eyes at him. “Now.”
“Okay, okay, I’m going,” Bucky got up, depositing the orders notepad on the bar counter. “I’ll see you later?”
“I don’t know, do I want to?”
Bucky was laughing as he headed out the ornate side door and into the heated hallway.
---
The apartment greeted him as if he’d never left, the afternoon heat thick as the shrill buzz of cicadas screaming through the city streets.
He checked the locks, then near-sprinted for the air-conditioning. Bucky switched it on and draped himself beneath it, waiting for the air to turn cool as he began to peel off his shirt, pants, socks, letting the air float about his skin.
After a minute, he got up, feeling the floorboards warm beneath his feet as he went about the apartment. Kitchen was still secure, bowls left in the same place as the morning, curtains closed – duffle bag shoved in an inoffensive corner cabinet along with his silver tray of weaponry. Living room – the cushions hadn’t moved from the night before, apart from the garish floral one now migrated to the bedroom of its one shared bed. You’d folded the blankets toward the foot of th bed, clothes also folded carefully and rested on the chair.
Bucky considered looking for those kimoyo beads, but he knew something that valuable would’ve been kept on your body the entirety of the day – perhaps the entire mission.
The living room, still the same – nothing amiss. The bathroom, small, window kept more or less closed, this room cooler than the rest of apartment, the cool tiles retaining little heat and Bucky decided now might be a good time to wash away the remains of the day.
Bucky watched cold water run rivulets across his skin, the second shower of the day doing more to ease the heat than the rattly air-conditioner. He heard the door open a short while later, his hearing easily picking out your breathing, distinct in its inhales and exhales, slow and easy, like a welcome breeze on a midnight harbour. Your feet paced the floorboards, steps light and nimble, in the living room, through the hallway, a sigh at the air-conditioning, then rounded through the bedroom.
Then in the corner of his eye, something grey and furry with too many legs to be considered normal scampered to the tiled sill of the window beyond the shower screen.
Bucky’s stomach dropped, eyes pulling wide and then–
“What the FUCK!!”
A loud crash, clanging followed by a zing and enough violent curses to rival a drill sergeant at basic training, and you were sprinting to the bathroom with a ‘Are you okay – Bucky, can I come in?’
“Why the FUCK IS THAT?!!”
The door flew open and Bucky rushed out, tall and impressive, water damp on his thighs and chest, his handsome face contorted in complete fear and disgust – the epitome of blue murder. He’d dragged his briefs on, half-wet, barely decent. Your eyes skimmed a glance at the light and shadow in the curve of his pelvic bone, the slightest dusting of hair down the centre of his belly, travelling beneath the waistband–
You were staring.
Bucky godforsaken Barnes was standing half-naked before you and you were goddamn staring.
Fuck.
FUCK.
“When you’re done checking me out,” Bucky smirked, tone still thoroughly unimpressed all the same. “You might want to check out the beast in the bathroom.”
“Right,” you said, brain fog easing and then, “Wait, what–”
“A spider,” he said flatly. “Hairy, huge, probably eats faces while you sleep – what’s so funny?”
“Weren’t you surrounded by spiders in Wakanda?” You were laughing, trying to make sense of this big, beautiful man full with fear over eight-legged creatures.
“Yeah, they were either in Shuri's lab or half the size of my fingernail,” he huffed, feeling slightly embarrassed. “They aren’t radioactive here, are they?”
“I don’t know, should they be?”
“Funny, real funny.” Bucky’s face glowed with indignation, pretty mouth hard-pressed with displeasure.
You were still laughing when you entered the bathroom, eyes searching for that critter that seemed to strike fear into the very hearts of war-hardened soldiers. It was all of three seconds when you found the creature you’d come to consider as a very reliable roommate over the past few months.
“Gwen!”
“What.”
“I see you’ve met Gwen,” you said, walking toward the critter. “She must’ve come in to escape the heat.”
“You’re friends with spiders,” Bucky deadpanned in sheer disbelief, because of course you were.
“Hey, these ones look scary, but they eat roaches and mosquitoes.”
“They should eat themselves.”
“I’ll be sure to tell the Parker kid how much you love his family.”
Bucky cast you a withering look. “Please do.”
The tension grew tight with a new kind of heat and desire. You swallowed, discarding one breath and took another.
“These huntsman spiders aren’t that bad,” you reasoned, amusement still rich in your voice, trying to fend off the growing desire in your belly.
You delved under the sink for the plastic container you kept in there, drawing up to meet the spider eye-to-eye.
“Even their name is bad?” Bucky replied, still in disbelief, his heart still fluttering fear in his throat. He decided that was enough showering for today, maybe even forever. “‘Huntsman’? Hunts. Man?”
“You know the Winter Soldier’s just a name too, right?”
“A ghost story, sure.” he replied dryly, pulling on the rest of his clothes.
“Right, and this one here,” you’d successfully trapped her into the container, her legs furry and scurrying about in the closed container. “She’s fine.”
“She hunts men.”
You snorted. “Can’t wait to tell Sam the Winter Soldier’s afraid of spiders.”
“You know there are spiders that eat birds, right?”
“In South East Asia, yeah,” you turned to him, holding the little container in your hand and watching Bucky’s eyes fix hard on the legs scampering about inside. “Sounds like you do know spiders.”
“One – and I like her.”
“Romanoff doesn’t count.” You thrust open the window, releasing the creature onto the sill outside and saw it scurry away into the setting sun. “She’s sweet.”
“You sure about that?” Bucky replied, watching you shut it close and made a mental note to tape up the gaps in the windows, the doors, the floorboards – hell, the whole apartment.
“I’m sure of a lot of things,” you replied, returning the container to the cabinet, and washed your hands clean.
“I’m never going to feel clean again,” Bucky lamented quietly, wandering back into the living room and collapsed on the couch.
“You’re so dramatic,” you laughed. “Sounds like Steve’s rubbing off on you.”
“After a hundred years, sure.”
Moments ticked by before you spoke at last.
“You okay?”
“With spiders? No.”
You snorted. “I’m sure that is the least of your traumas, Barry.”
“No, it’s the most.”
“If we go for pizza, will you get over it?”
Bucky sat in contemplation for while, considering his options. “Maybe.” He flashed you a smile and it made your heart go a little funny.
“So precious,” you replied, and headed over to the door, ignoring . “Come on, let’s go.”
“Yes ma’am.”
---
Sam was deep in thought, fitting together a conclusive map in his head when Steve came stalking into the briefing room.
“Sam, I think he’s on his way.”
Brown, dark eyes glanced up, watching his friend, the flash of emotions across that unusually calm face. “Who is?”
“Karpov’s guys,” Steve threw a map of Stark-blue intel into the air before them. Images, pathways, text shimmering across the screen – more pieces for the map in Sam’s mind.
“He’s got a contact down South,” Steve continued, drawing one section over another. “There’s some kind of front here.” A familiar part of the map connected a few more dots and Sam’s throat ran dry.
“South as in–”
“Yeah,” Steve replied grimly. “South as in Australia.”
“How the hell–”
“Fucked if I know.” Steve ran a palm through his growing blonde locks. “I need to get in touch with ‘em.”
“I’ll call Agent–”
“No.” Steve sighed, slumping into the seat before Sam, leaning back in contemplation. Hands fiddled with the beads on his wrist, half-considering the call now, half-considering what to say.
“Bucky needs to know,” Sam replied evenly. “He would want to know.”
“I know, Sam.”
“Even if it would jeopardise the whole thing.”
Steve didn’t answer.
Two soldiers sat in the briefing room, the weight of their next play pressing deep in the space between.

A Very Colin Christmas - Colin Shea x reader
Ch. 5 - All I Want For Christmas...
a/n - hey lovely people!! merry christmas to all who celebrate it, and i hope everyone had / is having a wonderful day. sorry this is a little later than i usually post, but hey - it’s still today:) Enjoy!<3
ch.1 ch.2 ch.3 ch.4
Summary: You have something you need to tell Colin, but you don’t really know how he’d react...
Word Count: 1.5k
Warnings: curse words i think, innuendos
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Merry Christmas guys! Goodnight!" you said as you grabbed your jacket.
"I'll escort you downstairs," Colin hastily got up as well and followed you outside.
"What's up?" you asked him as you unlocked the door to your apartment as quietly as you could.
"Are you alright?" he asked you, and you mentioned for him to be quiet before ushering him into your apartment.
"I'm fine," you shrugged. "Is that all? Because you should probably go back to –"
"Are you sure?" he looked into your eyes as if looking for something. "Because you were acting a little weird this evening, and I just wanna make sure it's not because I crossed any boundaries or the kiss yesterday or whatever…" he trailed off, looking at you expectantly.
"No, you uh, you didn't cross any boundaries or whatever. If you hadn't kissed me it would've seemed weird and blown our cover," you chuckled nervously.
"Then what aren't you telling me?" he insisted.
"Nothing you'd wanna hear," you mumble, and then, louder, add, "I'm just a little tired, that's all."
"I do wanna hear," he put his arm on your shoulder. "I know you're just my pretend girlfriend, but –"
Your chuckle cut him off. "See, it's all pretend, so you can go back to your family now."
"Are you regretting this? Is that what this is about? Is my family too much or something?"
"No, Colin, you're too much," you shrug helplessly and step away from him.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he frowned, his hand falling to his side.
"It means pretending to be your girlfriend sucks for me," you lamented, "because if I didn’t wanna just pretend, you'd never want that."
"Do you? Want it to be more than just pretend?" he asked, his jaw clenching.
You just stared into his eyes and sighed, your eyes nearly filling with tears as you shrugged in defeat and nodded slightly.
"Tell them I can't come tomorrow. That a work thing popped up. Sorry," you said after a moment, looking away from him and at the floor.
Wordlessly, he left your apartment, closing the door behind him. A tear escaped your eye, but you wiped it away and let out a ragged breath. Now that he knows, he's not going to talk to you ever again. But it's whatever, right? It's not like you actually broke up with your boyfriend.
It was all just pretend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, you didn't leave your apartment in fear of running into any of them. Instead, you stayed in, watching Christmas movies and munching on snacks. That was, after all, your original plan.
In the afternoon, you heard a bunch of voices coming from the hall. You couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but you did hear one 'goodbye', which told you they were finally going away. Not that them going away would change your predicament, but still, it was a comfort knowing you could now step out of your apartment if you wanted to.
Right now though, that was the last thing you wanted to do. You waited out the entire day in your apartment, wallowing in self pity. You could afford one day.
The next morning, you were up early, thinking there wasn't a chance of you running into anyone on your way to the mall. You had the day off of work, and you were planning on spending it doing some… consumerism therapy.
But as you were locking the door behind you, you heard the sound of the door on the other side of the hall opening. For a split second, you thought about pretending you were actually coming back and just getting into your apartment, but it was too late as you heard Colin call your name.
"Good morning," he said. You turned around to find him half naked, with only his pants on, and god you did not want to have this conversation like that.
"Hi," you answered, averting your gaze to the contents of your bag, pretending to rummage around in it. You started walking towards the stairs, and you were just about to walk down when –
"Can we talk? Please?" Colin asked.
"We just did," you feigned an innocent smile, but before you could take another step down he stepped forward and grabbed your wrist. You turned around sharply but the words got stuck in your throat once you saw how close to you he was, looking up at his sincere blue eyes.
"Please? I have coffee inside if you want some."
You could just walk away. It's not like you owed him anything. But… you did owe it to yourself. Some sort of closure would be nice, and also, you can't possibly avoid your closest neighbor for the rest of your stay in this apartment and you can't really buy another one.
"I would like some coffee," you shrugged and followed him back into his apartment.
The Christmas decorations were still up, but you didn't have much Christmas spirit in you as you sat down in front of Colin, blowing on your mug a little before taking a sip.
"So?" you simply asked, raising your eyes to meet his.
"So…" he chuckled nervously, "I guess I just wanted to talk to you about the other day. I know my family kind of freaked your out and I'm sorry."
"Yeah, um, it's fine," you answered airily. "Anything else?"
"I mean, there was the matter of, well," he scratched the back of his neck, "us?"
"What about 'us'?" you chuckled.
"You know, just that, what you said wh-"
"Look, I'm sorry. We don't have to bring it up. We're just neighbors. I did you a favor. It's alright, really."
"But what if I do want to bring it up?"
You clenched your jaw, ready to retaliate but then he spoke up again, "I mean, this weekend… look, I love my family, but I rarely like them. Having you here made it bearable. And well," he looked down, "it made me realize I do want a girlfriend. Or something. And uh, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to have dinner sometimes. With me." He flashed you a quick smile that faded as he anxiously awaited your response.
"The fact that you want a girlfriend is nice for you. But I don't… I don't know if… Colin, I don't want someone who will walk out on me every time things get serious, or emotional," you took a breath, "and you did."
"I only walked out because I didn't know what I wanted. It seemed like the right thing to do. But now I do know." He grabbed your hand in his and this time, you didn't pull away. That seemed to give him courage as he continued. "I want you. And I can't absolutely promise you that I will do grand romantic things, or talk about my feelings for you every day, but that doesn't mean they're not there. I don't think I'm a great boyfriend, mostly because I haven't been one in years, but I can promise to try," he smiled hesitantly.
You smiled back at him. "I don't need grand romantic things. If we do this, I just need you to want it as much as I do," you said, sincere.
"I probably want this more than you do," he winked, and you snorted. "So, what do you say, dinner?" he asked.
"Yeah, dinner. But be ready to have actual conversation. I don't put out on the first date," you smirked.
"Oh, I'm not worried. Because when you do, it's gonna be so," he leaned closer, his voice dropping down an octave, "so worth it," he smirked.
You raised your eyebrow at him, "Alright. I'm gonna go, but I'll see you tonight?"
"I'll pick you up at eight," he smiled and you chuckled. You just got up and you were ready to leave, when –
"Look up," Colin, who came to stand next to you suddenly said.
You did, to find the mistletoe, still intact. Before you could say anything, Colin crashed his lips on yours, and this time you readily leaned into his toned body, which now you remembered was still shirtless, and you gasped slightly at the impact of his lean body meeting yours. His tongue slipped past your lips, and you wrapped your arms around his neck as the kiss deepened. When you broke apart, he brought his hand up to caress your cheek with his thumb.
"One for the road," he whispered, and you couldn't contain your giggle.
"See you," you licked your swollen lips and went outside.
You didn't what was going to happen. Sure, your and Colin's story had what some would call a rocky beginning, and you didn't know anything about the end. But there was one thing you were sure of – Colin Shea looks fucking hot with his shirt off.
But for real, his little speech gave you a very good feeling. See, you know what Colin Shea looks like when he flirts with his one-night-stands, and this?
This was different. Better. And you couldn't wait to have that with him.
