2- Anything that you'd like to write but feel like you're unable to?

AAA Many things really :') The truth is that I am very insecure about my prose writing in English plus my brain is always in like... 7 projects at once, so is hard to move fics up that priority ladder.

However in a more planning sense... I have always wanted to make a fic of the time Riza was under Bradley where he orders her to be his political assassin (Based on he doing that in one of the Wii games) and basically try to fit it in canon and all. Have a confrontation with Kimblee maybe that way she also gets closure that way. My main issue with it is that.... is a very miserable time for her LOL

And I love to put the blorbo through the miserable time!! But mainly because the ending makes up for it. The ending in this thing however would Riza meeting with Fuery and Breda in the sewers where we pick it up in canon, so part of me feels like...... idunno, Idunno how not to make this fic extremely depressing not to just read but also write lol I like the idea of focusing in small victories, like during this time Riza confronts some of her issues now that she is on her own, stuff like that. It just needs a lot of planning to maybe make it appealing to write and so I don't spend a lot of time entertaining the idea...

Also another idea I started planning but then abandoned because I thought it was getting kinda boring is one where 12 years after canon, Ms. Bradley dies and in her dying days she writes a letter to Riza to look after Selim because his shadow powers are re-awakening and she is the only person alive (apart from Ed who is busy with his own kids) who knows about them.... I think thematically is very interesting, I just can't think of a plotline that I care about lol

I don't find that one particularly out of the ordinary because "Making X series into Warrior Cats" is very common in my circles ASDFGHJ I guess the funny AU idea that "OH NO! Roy has been accused of a crime and Riza is looking out for who could possible help him... and Omg is that Phoenix Wright from the popular Videogame Series Ace Attorney?!" LOL just because is the funniest crossover idea. i think beastars would've worked way better if the desire to eat the meat of herbivores by hunting them down and killing them wasn't inherent to all carnivores and wasn't this like... weird uncontrollable urge. as a story that muses on what would happen if an animal society with parallels to ours existed, its an interesting concept but it falls apart -really- fast when people attempt to compare it to the racial dynamics of our reality (the author heavily advises against this, but I think it's a significant issue if people continue to think of it this way regardless of her intent). and it also falls apart when considering something like harm reduction and rehabilitation. with the latter point i would chalk that up to an issue of execution and lack of understanding on the author's part

carnivores viewing herbivores as a potential food source is something that's considered inherent to being a carnivore. Not the craving for meat or adequate sustenance, but viewing another sentient living being as food which i think is a significant difference. It's treated as a matter of fact within the text and isn't disputed in any real way. In fact, a lot of the really ... "questionable" (understatement) societal dynamics are presented as like. just being the way things are with characters accepting it without any real heavy objection to it in some instances (there is a specific story in beast complex I'm thinking about right now). Haven't even touched upon the gender bioessentialism but maybe I'll get to that in another post

There's a strange sort of Both Ways dynamic between carnivores and herbivores where herbivores have the significant disadvantage in physical strength but outnumber carnivores by a large margin. Herbivores are also significantly more represented in some career prospects while carnivores have to follow social rules to be as non-threatening as possible. (As a note female carnivores are presented as straight up not being as dangerous or aggressive as the male ones. and while there are ones that predated on herbivores they're portrayed as mentally unwell or manipulative, or in some cases their predation has a twinge of sexuality to it... male carnivores generally are portrayed with a bout maliciousness in their predator instincts until they receive treatment and "go back to normal")

Let me summarize what I think wouldve been far more interesting to consider: how punitive justice doesn't work to prevent crime and doesn't stop people from repeating crimes, how people who lack resources are driven to desperation and how that can enable them to commit violent acts, how oppression isn't born out of fear of the oppressed group but rather a means of seeking domination over the oppressed group.

I really hesitate to put carnivores in the role of an oppressed group and with what i can gather from beastars I'm starting to think that was avoided on purpose, but I'd have to reread it in order to give a better analysis

I think it'd be interesting overall if the issue was that carnivores aren't getting enough sustenance and in turn are quite malnourished. Maybe they didn't eat meat of herbivores but instead the meat of non-sentient fish, but that was viewed as a slippery slope that leads to eating herbivores. Stuff like synthetic meat or anything resembling meat (and like the manga, stuff like bugs not counting) was banned. So even though fish meat would be a worthwhile option to consider, it is still illegal due to moral views despite the illegality causing far more damage to society as a whole. This could Still be like, not ideal in a story sense I feel like but as beastars exist right now it's much more concerning

I've read the entire manga and yes I know fish meat was considered a solution at the end but the whole thing was so fuckin flimsy that it felt like a bandaid solution to the problems that were portrayed in the beginning

Like in both, herbivores were the good ones while the carnivores were suspicious and dangerous and nobody liked them and they were shown to face this like racism or something

But like what do the carnivores eat? If they can't eat herbivores and not eating meat makes them sick or something (at least in Beastars it was a little more explained, there was even a night market and all, Zootopia was more family friendly)

Top 5 reasons I have only the first/first couple of volumes of a manga series on my shelf, in no order:

Someone tried to get me into it after I started reading it and uncountably oversexualized a character (mostly female characters but occasionally it'll be male characters because I have one friend who thinks he knows my type and is so, so wrong it's not even funny and his way of trying to get me into something is "oh hey, you'd totally want to fuck this guy")

Anime got made for it and someone started acting like the anime was god's gift to humanity and it weirded me out

It's a romance and I got scared

I bought it on a whim and just didn't find it interesting enough to continue

listen to me, listen to me...beastars no doubt is a story that has underlines of queer themes rather than racial themes like zootopia, just using animals as an allegory.

Like the one main idea that legoshi and Juno(the two wolf characters) are supposed to be together and they get treated really well within the animal society for being a cis heteronormativity couple that they presume to have sex. but the thing is, none of them really want that, they're into prey animals, predator x prey which the animal society deems as abnormal and a "fetish". it can kinda be equated to Being a queer couple, or queer person, which society deems as abnormal and a "fetish".

(but also this allegory is quite messy and doesnt work at times because they're quite literally animals but that's what I kinda appreciate about this story, it's itagaki paru's first work and it really shows, and it's really damn charming and interesting despite its faults)
