Eclipse reread part 2! This is gonna cover a lot of chapters because I forgot to include stuff from chapters 4, 5, and 6 in part 1 (in my defense your honor, this book is very grating to read). Awayyy we go:

1. so chapters 4-6 really could have been one chapter tbh since the plot is: Bella ditches work at Newton’s Outfitters to hang with Jake and then writes some graduation invites with Angela. She pushes her rusty old behemoth as fast as it can go through driving rain but then hangs outside with Jake the whole time so I don’t really know where the rain went. She also manages to hear Jake gasp through her closed car door! Super sonic! Anyway, Bella insists that Edward is a good guy, Jake makes Bella hold his hand, Jake explains imprinting (yuck we can skip that), and then Edward drives threateningly past Bella while she’s on her way to Angela’s house. Angela reminds Bella that, at his core, Edward is a teen boy who is Totally Jealous of how Ripped and Sexy her 16 year old best friend is. Then Alice kidnaps Bella. Fun times!

2. During the imprinting convo it becomes very apparent that Meyer thinks the worst thing that can happen to a girl is getting broken up with. Somehow Leah got the “worst end” of the Sam/Emily/Leah fiasco despite Sam turning into a “monster” and Emily getting literally mauled in the face. What’s worse is later in the book, during the “Legends” chapter, when Bella wonders if Leah thinks Emily’s scars are a form of “justice.” Yea, Bella, that’s justice. 

3. I love this Rosalie quote but hate the entirety of they way meyer writes her story. Others have mentioned it before but Meyer writes Rose's dialogue there as if Rose is an author and not like...a person telling a story. An easy fix would be to format Rosalie's story "flash back" style rather than have her narrate all the way through. Then you can include all the superfluous details of exactly what everyone's voice sounded like and all the excessive dialogue tags you want.

Yea, meyer, the Hot Girl hates your self-insert because her stupid ass brother didn't have the hots for her. It just reads like weird middle school revenge fantasy "I only hated you because you were so Special!!!" Sure, sure. Also "all those females!" People don't talk like that @stephanie

4. I do love the scene when Bella “escapes” from Alice with Jake (I don’t know why i put escape in quotes, Alice could definitely murk Bella) but then that whole adventure ends with Jake telling Bella he’d rather she die than turn into a vampire. And yeah, fair buddy, but also you’ve known Bella for a long time. This should not be a surprise to you at all even a little bit. a) she mentioned it before, b) you knew she would never get over Edward even if your plan in NM had worked, and c) you’ve known that she’s fully obsessed with the Cullen’s since you started hanging out with her again. The last time you guys hung out she went on an impassioned rampage about how lovely and good and fantastic Edward is (footage not found) I really don’t know why you’re surprised that this hard-headed girl is prepared to commit to vampirism for him. She is not normal lmfao.

5. The legends chapter. Oh boy. Stephanie, Meyer, Smeyer. Honestly it might have been less offensive if she had just made up a whole new tribe to give these backstories to, for all that they have in common with real Quileute legends but actually that would still be offensive and terrible anyway. I don’t know how to describe this adequately but if you’ve ever seen G.I. Joe’s portrayal of indigenous people that’s exactly what meyer made Old Quil and Billy’s dialogue sound like. Just absolutely dripping with Mystical Native/ Magical Native trope from the content to the tone. https://mthg.org/ Because it can’t be plugged enough.  

6. The legends chapter ends with this Wuthering Heights quote:

I have no qualms with it's inclusion, if you really want to push the Edward is Heathcliff and Bella is Cathy agenda, I don't believe it but fine, whatever. But those last two paragraphs are such a dumb way to end a chapter. Every chapter ending should make the reader want to turn the page: this makes me want to shut the book (actually I did take a long break after this lmfao). Anyway, just end the quote on "drank his blood," bold those three words, and end the chapter there. Don't go back and say "the three words that stood out were... Anyway it could have fallen to any page I believe in coincidence teehee!!" That's just annoying.

7. Okay guys I hate to say it but Edward does get a lil bit of ~character growth after the first few chapters. He comes home after having Bella kidnapped (she decides not to be angry, surprise surprise) and is all "so I've been thinking about it and you're right my Beloved Angel Face or whatever, please hang out with Jacob but also wear a helmet on your motorcycle my Beloved Dumb Idiot or whatever" (paraphrase). And he also says this in chapter 12:

Which is like, man I hate when I agree with Edward but I agree with Edward here. Now I know from MS that he only wants Bella to stay human because he's creating an Unfolding Drama in his head but this bit of dialogue is really sweet. And it's funny that he thought Bella didn't want to marry him because she just wanted to use him for immortality but it's also a Dark Reminder that he's literally only romantic with her because he can't read her mind and can't tell that she's just as obsessed with his looks as the other Teen Girls TM.

8. uuuh Jasper’s Backstory Time. This is so infuriating to read for so many reasons. So we know that smeyer got Jasper’s name from a confederate memorial/ listing (from a New Moon Q&A but the link isn’t secure so I can’t share) so I know that his backstory was always meant to be Confederate Soldier which makes everything else about his characterization just baffling. Again, he was the only Cullen that was genuinely kind to Bella besides Carlisle for the entire first book and he’s still incredibly kind during Eclipse (which is another issue I have though because no one mentions again that Jasper tried to eat Bella and they stand close to each other and hang out and Bella’s never like “this is scary, this dude tried to kill me” but i digress). The point is: smeyer knew he was going to be a confederate from book 1. She never addresses that this was bad, she never has Jasper mention that he regrets his role in the war, he is the only Cullen that’s actually capable of empathizing with humans anymore (Carlisle cares but I would not categorize him as empathetic), it just... None of these pieces fit together. This is a fraught and bloody history that smeyer throws in with no thought to how it might alienate black readers (though tbh she constantly emphasizes “white beauty” throughout the series so I doubt she cares) and the editors don’t question it either. No one, at any point in time, said “Hey, steph, you know confederates fought for slavery, right?” Every black american deserves reparations. White women and men who glorify the civil war should be the first to pay up. 

9. I’m gonna jump back to chapters 9 & 10 here (target & scent, respectively) to say: no tension is being effectively built. I get it, someone stole your clothes. You’re annoyed because you have nothing to wear and Victoria is scary. But where is she? Where is the volturi? Move it along, please! This is one of the challenges of 1st person narrative because the author is stuck in the eyes of, usually, the person who knows the least. Meyer is not a talented enough author to make this interesting. Not to bring up THG again but Suzanne Collins really knew how to work 1st person. Everything that Katniss asserts with certainty throughout the series gets either confirmed or denied by the narrative, keeping it interesting. She assumes the worst of the people around her so we’re pleasantly surprised when people violate those assumptions. We’re kept on edge by how little Katniss knows and SC never gifts Katniss with more knowledge than she could be expected to have. Bella is constantly gifted with knowledge and her assumptions are rarely proven wrong. You can dig into the canon a little bit more, read the lexicon and the guide, and find all the examples of Bella being unreliable or making wrong assumptions. But within the narrative she is rarely incorrect. She doesn’t get opportunities to grow out of her false assumptions (while Edward does, at least in Eclipse). So to keep the Victoria debacle interesting, smeyer has to plant seeds like- during these two chapters- Bella thinking of Laurent and Victoria while the cullens discuss who could have been in Bella’s room. That just doesn’t cut it for me. 

This is hella long and I’m only halfway through the book. I probably should split the second half into two parts as well but based on how talented smeyer is at stretching out the mundane, especially just before the climax, I probably wont need to.

alright! -cracks knuckles- here I go, and i think these panel selections probably do a good job to illustrate the complexity of the character despite being VERY different takes on him:

(The precise nature of Hulk’s relationship to Banner varies quite a lot, as these panels indicate. I placed the majority of this essay below Read More since it got kind of long.)

Right so, the first thing you need to know is that Bruce Banner is prone to different writers writing him in very different ways. Sometimes he’s a tortured idealist hampered by his own feelings of self-doubt, other times he’s honestly a bit of a jerk who means well but is vitriolic at the best of times (and causing others to prefer the Hulks, who are at least earnest and straightforward, whereas Bruce can be INCREDIBLY passive-aggressive), and sometimes he’s a pretty regular guy just doing his best who likes science and is a very vulnerable person. (And sometimes he’s also kind of meta and talks about his constant misfortune in a way that makes it sound like he’s criticizing the writers for never leaving him be.)

To understnad Bruce Banner, you must understand his father, Brian Banner. A man frequently shown to be petty, self-absorbed and prone to bullying other people to make himself feel big, when his son was born, he felt threatened (of a baby) and that his wife’s love had been stolen from him. He came to resent his son, particularly when Bruce performed incredible feats such as creating fully functional complex machines at the age of four, reading Paradise Lost at even younger than that (though it’s ambiguous whether he COULD read it, or what just looking at the pictures), and became emotionally and verbally abusive to his son and his wife, and then physically abusive.

This atmosphere colored Bruce’s childhood; harmed both physically and emotionally, as was his mother, he began to feel responsible for their mutual suffering, that if he had been a better son his father wouldn’t be so constantly angry. This created two issues for him: first, even at that age he began to try to bury his feelings and abiltiy to get angry, believing ANY expression of anger would make him a bad person. The second is that he also thought that he should have been big enough and strong enough to protect his mother.

(The way these two wishes mix together and conflict pretty much sums up the big problem Bruce has, in accepting himself.)

As a result of this abuse, and in order to cope with it, Bruce developed Dissassocative Identity Disorder. The Hulks we know are alters, though it’s unclear whether most of them formed recently or when he was a child. The first of them to appear was the Devil Hulk, who took his name and form from Paradise Lost, as Bruce desperately wanted a father figure who loved him and wouldn’t hurt him... but he was so hurt, he couldn’t imagine a father’s love without being hurt, and so he materialized as a monstrous figure begging Bruce to let him out so he could kill Bruce’s dad and make him leave Bruce alone.

Brian’s abuse culminated in an incident where he attempted to kill Bruce, having come to see him as a monster, and his mother Rebecca tried to stop him; he killed her, leaving Bruce to watch, and left to go to a bar to go brag about it, but not before lecturing Bruce and telling him that this was all Bruce’s fault, that her death was his fault. For years, he blamed himself for this, and it colored his negative attitude towards his own feelings: if he allowed himself to feel ANYTHING at all, he’d be just like his father.

So he gets put into the care of other members of the family, when Brian is shortly arrested afterwards; eventually as an adult, Brian is put into his care, but when visiting his mother’s grave, Bruce and Brian get into an argument that winds up with Bruce smashing his father’s head against his mother’s gravestone, killing him. It is highly ambigious whether or not this was an accident, if Bruce tried to kill him in a fit of vengeful rage and spent years trying to forget it, or if this was his first true Hulk out even before the accident.

(The other Hulks are believed to be a result of Bruce’s damaged life as well; the Savage Hulk, the green and simple brute most are familiar with, is the wounded child he was, endlessly crying out in fear and rage at a world that will never stop hurting him. Joe Fixit, the iconic grey Hulk, is a cunning and smart streetwise hedonist who believes himself to fundamentally be a bad person, saying all the cynical and bitter stuff Bruce won’t say; Bruce won’t let him say or feel so many things, and Joe does it for him. There is the Professor Hulk, who in the comics is a merged state between most of these alters and Bruce, an idealized state, but ultimately falling apart just as Bruce’s life tears himself apart.)

The two most important aspects of Bruce’s life that seem to be iconic to his character are this: one, he has some of the most horrific luck in the Marvel universe, even worse than the X-Men. (To the point that, when believing Xavier to be responsible for his most responsible bout of horrific lamenting and grief, Hulk came to make Xavier pay only to discover that the X-Men constantly are in such misery that he didn’t have the heart to do anything.) If he finds love, it will be destroyed. If he and the Hulk system stabilize, something will come along to put it out of balance. His mindscape is a chaotic, seething mass of uncertainty and weirdness. Bruce simply can’t win at anything, or even find long-term stability; this could be compared to someone with mental health issues who has periodic Bad Brain Days and causes himself grief, unable to stop it from happening.

The second one is ambiguity. Is the Hulk a man, or a monster? Is Bruce Banner a hero, or a great threat to the world (as suggested a few times when he was depowered, and immediately became a massively manipulative mad scientist). He could be one, or the other, or perhaps both. Planet Hulk demonstrates this well, when Hulk (banished to an alien world, and making a found family with a group of outcasts and sole survivors) retorts to Korg’s comment about the strength of the heroes of earth: “Their heroes won’t save them.”

This statement can be taken two ways; that Hulk plans on coming back and taking revenge on the world that cast him out after he saved them. Or that he predicts some other threat will come after Earth, and their heroes won’t be able to save the ungrateful puny humans.

Hulk, needless to say, has some VERY complex characterization even at his most basic (such as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, where we got a smart but ferocious Hulk contrasted with Banner as a morality agent, who had some interesting complexities), and the MCU largely dumbs him down to just a scientist who gets angry and turns into a monster, but he has some VERY good reasons and experiences to justify it, and he can’t be a bigger monster than many of the people he’s known.

The second one is still my favorite, but the others are as crazy and fun! I LOVED IT!

Honestly, everything is absolutely pefect in this movie�� like when Mr. Darcy always look’s like he’s about to throw up everytime Lizzie is around, how Mr. Bingley is an absolutely sunshine, how Jane it’s his perfect match, how Lizzie is perfecly sassy and smart… I, obviously, and I can not stress this enough: THE HAND FLEX!!! (and when Mr. Darcy cofesses his eternal love to Lizzie in the rain and them they fight and them they almost kiss… AMAZING CINEMA!)

I loved the movie and I can’t wait to finally find time to read the book too…

This was, honestly, the best thing I saw the entire year. It made so happy and proud of my own culture, and was so increadible to watch, with a great cast and characters that are truly amazing... and as if all of this wasn’t enough, the movie (as a coincidence) talks direcly with Brazil’s currently politic scene. 

When the movie was over, I felt like crying of happines... I so proud o f brazilian cinema and how it gets better and bigger each year!!

Lupita Nyong'o deserves way more recognition from the Movies Industry because she is so great and even with a fucking OSCAR on her shelf, she barely has any leading characters on her career and is SO UNFAIR!

This movies is funny, scary, the cast is great and there’s Shake it Off by Taylor Swift was sang by a bunch of kids and Lupita dressed on a beautiful yellow dress all dirty of zombie blood, sooo... you should go and watch it!

The movie it’s okay until it gets on it’s last 15 to 10 minutes... then so much starts to happen and you just want to stop seeing it, but can’t because you want to know the ending of it, and it’s so scary and crazy... Really I totally get why lots of people are crazy about this one... SO SCARY!

Also, look out for the website they made for the three filmakers that “disapeared” ( AKA were killed by the Blair Witch), it’s so good and there’s a lot of more information that makes the movie even more scary.

Spoiler: [About Joe moving to LA to hide from Candace, who is bent on getting her revenge and uncovering his truth. He starts a new life by stealing the identity of Will Bettelheim. He starts a new job in the bookstore part of a store called Anavrin, run by his new love interest, Love, and her twin brother, Forty. Joe wants to lead a better life here but is constantly found making accidents. He sets up a new and improved cage box typa thing in a storage unit, where he keeps anyone who gets in his way. He originally keeps WIll here and lets him go. He gets involved with killing a influencer named Hendy because he was trying to prove that Hendy was messing with little girls. One of the girls was his landlord when she was younger and she’s now afraid Hendy would do something to her little sister, Ellie. Ellie is also a friend to Joe. She’s really into the film world so is trying to intern with Hendy. Joe doesn’t want to get romantically involved again, but ends up falling so hard for Love so they begin a relationship, which includes becoming friends with Forty because it is a package deal. Forty is an addict trying to make it big. Love’s ex husband had died earlier on, so she didn’t think she could love again. Everything is very LA and so are Love and Forty’s lives and friends. Joe also has his landlord, Delilah, put in the cage because she was snooping and discovered it and is horrified. Joe has a difficult time accepting who he is and having so much difficulty starting this new life of his without fucking up for Love so he decides to leave LA even if it means losing Love. He plans on letting go of Delilah but finds her dead in his box after he accidentally went on an acid trip with Forty. When he finally admits his truth of what a horrible person he is to Love, she reveals what kind of person she really is also. Love killed Candace after seeing how she’d get in the way of her and Joe’s happiness. She also reveals that she killed Delilah because she was also getting in the way. Joe is having difficulty coming to terms of this new look on Love until Forty realizes what a horrible person Joe is and decides to kill him. Forty ends up getting killed by Fincher, Dellilah’s police officer fuck buddy. Love and Joe start a new life together. ]

Shutter (Vol 1 - 3) Review

Talking psychotic robot clocks, grand old school adventure, and cyber roman lion bounty hunters. This one has it all, and is one hell of a journey.

Also, bear in mind, minor spoilers.There is also one specific quotation from the end of Volume 2, but it is block quoted so it can be easily skipped. I try to avoid the majority of the story’s twists and turns, but some examples and key points needed to brought up. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Shutter (Volumes 1 - 3)

You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do this one!

Shutter is a prime example of what makes comics so different from other media. It is as heavily reliant on its vivid visuals as it is its razor sharp writing, and it blends the two (along with twists on several comics conventions) into a riveting tale of famed explorer and photographer Kate Kristopher dealing with the sins of her father while trying to figure out her own identity. Also, things like this happen:

Yes, that is an assassination hit being ordered in Sunday newspaper comic strip paneling. The story uses this sort of framing device at several points, actually, and while you’d think it might clash with an otherwise more “Gabriel Ba but somehow more intensely on acid than usual” aesthetic, it works remarkably well. In fact, the story seems to pride itself on continually breaking traditional barriers without even a hint of smugness or pretension. It knows the story it wants to tell, it wants to tell it as well as it can and it does not give a shit how crazy the means to tell that story may become.

It uses flashbacks sparingly yet has an incredibly complicated history for all its characters. It changes narrative framing to seemingly minor characters, building them up only to kill them off or shift course entirely until far later down the line, like something out of Urasawa’s Monster. The world is too complex to be fully explained in one series, let alone a single book. The sheer density of it all hits you like a freight train, and you just cling on for dear life as it rushes along.

And when I say it rushes along, I mean it flows fast as all hell. The sense of momentum to Del Duca’s art is amazing, and makes me hope that some day this comic will get turned into something animated. Each panel looks like a frame of animation given an extra polish of detail. You have to linger on each page and just soak in all the details. The earthy tones of the world give Shutter a rather grounded feel, and are contrasted by the bright hues whenever conversations get intense or bullets start flying. The layers Gieni adds punctuate the world when other colorists might have simply given the line work all the emotional reigns.

Owen Gieli’s coloring, lighting and shading, on top of Del Duca’s expressive line work and use of perspective; just absolutely astounding work all around.Credit must also be given to the lettering by John Workman. The lettering is not only varied and impactful, but the bubble placement is always directing your eye to the next critical moment.

The story itself is also quite endearing, despite the larger than life setting and progressively large cast of characters. At the heart of all things is Kate, daughter to the famous (and now deceased) explorer Chris Kristopher, and current travel photographer. She’s got a flat with her transwoman friend Alain and a talking robot cat clock. Life was always an adventure for Kate, but after her father’s passing, she’s tried to put those times behind her.

However, when a gang of rabbits, ninja spirits, and a robot start fighting over Kate against a lion mafia hit squad (yes I just wrote that sentence with a straight face), things quickly begin to unravel as all of Chris’ past choices all start to come crashing down on Kate. A quick visit to the old family home leaves Kate with more questions than a struggling 20-something ex-adventurer can handle, leading to a struggle to regain control in the face of a world determined to force her down a path she refuses to go down.

Among the early revelations for Kate is that her father sired several children, some of which would very much like for Kate to be dead, and others just as innocent as Kate in the ongoing schemes for power and revenge. Along the way, cyber-foxes, secret societies, and even inter-dimensional entities come to blows with Kate and her ever shifting group of allies.

If there’s one thing you are probably noticing at this point, it’s that a core focus of the entire series is on defying expectations and cutting your own path, even if you struggle for it. From the way the story is told to the actions of our protagonist, the traditional Campbellian hero’s journey gets tossed out the window in favor of a protagonist who actively says things along the lines of “no, f**k that noise, we’re doing this my way” and grapples with the consequences; which is part of what makes Shutter so interesting.

In improv, you’re taught to always say “yes”, no matter what, but Shutter makes a compelling argument for how much more interesting things can become in a story when you dare to say “no”. Volume 2 encapsulates this beautifully with Kate’s rant when she stands before a coallition of her enemies who have been pulling the strings and causing suffering for all those she cares about:

I’ve been trying to deal with it all. Sometimes very poorly and definitely too reactionary because I hoped it’d go away on its own. Sometimes I caved in and ended up doing some really stupid shit, like running off with a minor and possibly killing a fox or jackal or whatever she was, instead of using my brain. And the whole time you all keep relentlessly coming at me with this issue or that whatever, and I kept trying. And I kept messing up. Because everything you all want out of me isn’t who I am.

Everybody feels like I have to deal with their crap or alter my life to suit their needs and do things their way. But guess what? FUCK EVERYBODY! You all want me? You all got me! But on MY terms. Kate Kristopher is back. By popular demand. And she’s going to fight every one of you morons until your collective bullshit is straight up non-existent. Any questions?

So long, Hollywood bog-standard “the chosen one” narrative storytelling! While some stories have taken this concept and rolled with it, like Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Shutter does all it can to flip that notion the hell off and tells it to go jump in a lake.

It’s a sentiment that appeals to us all, dealing with a world that always demands more of us than what we’re often prepared to give, and is a universal story as a result. The at times absurd scenarios Kate and company find themselves in work because the unusual is normal in the world of Shutter. You can’t get lost in the grass critiquing a particular political angle or detail because the world is intentionally built to shut up that noise and get everyone to sit down and focus on what it’s actually trying to tell. It’s kind of a reverse mute-button, going full blast to keep your attention.

For example Chris Jr., Kate’s secret little brother, has to use a shotgun on someone at some point in self-defense. They address it and talk briefly about it, but in the context of survival and making snap decisions, not the gun itself. Alain being trans is a part of her character development, they even devote a flashback to it, but that’s not even a tenth of Alain’s character as Kate’s best friend and an awesome ass-kicker coming in to save the day. The existence of deities is known and some pay reverance to arcane aspects of the world but others don’t and no one blinks an eye either way. Ghost ninjas aren’t terrifying so much as a nuisance, with people dismissing their ancient moans as a running gag for the first volume.

it’s not that the story doesn’t obviously have a liberal slant, and it’s far from pro-spirituality, but also isn’t taking potshots at anyone (unless you’re part of an ultra-secretive Illuminati-esque organization, in which case, um, hi!). And in our current online and political landscape, that is a refreshing change of pace.

As if I haven’t gushed enough, it must also be said that good gravy are the amount of cogs in motion in this story just utterly insane. I wasn’t kidding when I said the story could pull Monster levels of bouncing about, with character development for the whole cast and a litany of sub-plots playing out. Also, unlike certain video games, these sub-plots do get properly fleshed out over time, even if the narrative can ignore certain plot beats for a time before bringing them back into focus.

There’s also a sequence in chapter 3 that goes so meta that you almost double-take at the sequence on display. It’s pretty typical for such a surreal universe to have a crazy drug-induced dream sequence, but Shutter goes out of its way to really knock your socks off, and that’s all I’ll say.

Beyond that, I fear I’d spoil too much of the experience for you describing what happens. The series so far has reached Volume 4, and I’ve got my copy patiently sitting on my desk as I write up this review. Each act of the story has taken two volumes, so I’d imagine it will take at least until Volume 6 to wrap everything up.

If you’re interested in catching up before Volume 5 gets collected, you need to decide if you are going physical or digital. Digital copies have been fairly cheap on Comixology recently, but I honestly plan to get the copies I have digital in physical form at some point. The volumes do cost $15 a piece, but the art is just so much more vivid in physical form, with some of the best covers I’ve seen in ages.

                                              In Summary

Shutter is probably one of my new all-time favorite series. It’s fresh, interesting, laser-focused and realistic of its limitations but also ambitious as hell within those very same boundaries. I can’t wait to see how Kate’s quest to solve the conspiracies and save her friends pans out, but odds are good it’s going to be one hell of a final fight.
