Merry Christmas <3
Link sat comfortably in a bedroll, the cave around him dim but somewhat cozy as he stared at the tendrils of orange flame that reached out towards the ceiling, smoke rising and fading into the night. He looked at the glistening white outside, and the cloudy evening skies. He would’ve spent more time at the castle, curling up in a soft, forest green blanket Aurora would’ve draped over his shoulders. He would’ve pulled her close and basked in the warmth and the feeling of security. He could never stay in one place though, for everyone’s safety. They would find him. And take what shouldn’t be taken.
The snow outside crunched. Someone grunted, as footsteps crushed snow, the sound echoing in the cave. Link tensed, unsheathing his sword. Was he not even safe here?
But it wasn’t a monster or bandit that came inside. It was the postman, shuffling inside and hurrying to the fire. He pulled out a stack of letters, hands shaking. “Addressed to Link, sometimes called Hyrule.”
His eyes widened as he took the letters. He looked up and the postman had vanished. He was not surprised. Link sat down, sheathing his weapon carefully.
To Link (Sometimes called Hyrule)
From: Legend
He gingerly pulled a piece of paper from the envelope and read it over, a smile forming on his face.
Are you still alive, kid? You better send a letter and let me know, alright? You’ve already given me enough grey hairs, I don’t need anymore. Anyway, Zel and I are celebrating the winter by chilling at my home and sipping hot cocoa. Not constantly on the run, or fighting, or watching out for me or someone else is honestly strange but I’m enjoying it. Zel’s introduced me to some books that seem interesting, and she told me if there was some other quest in the future, I would stay right here and she would deal with it herself. I have no doubt she could.
…I’ve gotten off track. When you end up sending that letter to me, tell me how you’ve been. If you need any help, I’ve sent a couple items along…and hey, I might not be there but I can send you anything you need. Don’t hesitate to bombard me with letters.
He stared at the paper fondly, chuckling before setting it down. He’d forgotten who else he’d had. Though his brothers were eras away, he still had them. A warmth filled his chest, not caused by the rising flames. He opened another one, from Wild.
Once I explained everything to Zelda she demanded I send letters to you guys. I’ve never really made one before…at least without memories, so I’ll just tell you how I’ve been doing, since I know you’re probably wondering.
I took your recipes and made them. I can’t believe the others didn’t like them. They’re really not bad. I’m still wandering off. You know how big my land is, I’m still discovering so many new things about it and its people. Nobody knows where I am most of the time, so Zelda actually installed a tracking function on the slate. I think it’s totally unfair.
I talked about wanting to rebuild my land right? We started doing that. We opened a school, cleared out what used to be Castle Town and started building a place called Lookout Landing near it. We’ve also started expanding the towns and villages and contacted other kingdoms. It’s been such a busy time but I can see a bright future, and it’s what I owe to these people.
As much as I’d love for everything to be okay, we still have blood moons here. I thought it’d go away after we defeated the Shadow. It hasn’t, and Ganon isn’t here, so I can’t think of why it keeps coming. It makes it incredibly frustrating to rebuild sometimes.
That’s enough of me though. How have you been? Still causing shenanigans?
~Wild
Link placed the letter beside him, grinning. He would have to make sure to find some ink and paper and write to them. Another one from Warriors.
Hello, traveller. It’s been so long, and a lot of things have happened here. First of all, I’ve been promoted from a captain to a general. But way more importantly, Lana’s contacted me recently. She’s the good half of the time sorceress I told you all about. Anyway, she knew about my most recent quests and mentioned she owed me a favour for something I’m not willing to say here. She’s working on finding a way for us to visit. As soon as we find out, I’m coming. As much as I’m happy we brought back peace, it’s not the same without you all. Less loud, you know?
Send back a letter and tell me how you’re faring, will you? I can send you rupees or rations or whatever you need, if you just say the word. Before you do anything, just remember, you’re as much as a hero as the rest of us, and asking for help is completely okay. Otherwise you might as well stop calling me a hero, for the countless times I’ve asked you all for some form of help.

Link’s face felt warm as he set the letter aside, a bit reluctantly. A chance to visit his brothers, and see them again nearly brought tears to his eyes. He wanted to seem them all again so badly. He remembered bringing them to his cave, and hearing chatter and laughter echo throughout it. He flipped through and read each letter slowly, trying not to cry but once he had finished the last letter, each one sitting in a messy pile, tears began to stream down his cheeks. They weren’t like any other time he had cried. He felt so warm and…happy. He put the fire out, wearing a cloak the vet had gifted him and set out into the night, running towards the distant shape of the castle, blurred by falling specks of white and frigid wind. He didn’t mind. He was just eager to write letters and see more of their unique handwritings.
