Fanfiction Comments: Why Bother?

Genuine question: If ya’ll like a story, why not comment?

This question, born out of previous discussions and Discord chats, is one writers have been dealing with for a long time. Feedback/reblogs on art tends to be more common than on fics. Yet writers continue to beg for comments on stories. So what's stopping people?

Read everything and how do you pick out one part?

Feels like an expectation/I owe them

Send me a string of emojis? I love it. Send a single heart? I love it. Keyboard smash? I love it. Copy/paste a "thank you for writing"? I still love it. "I don't know what to comment or how to put my feelings into words." Then put that! That's a compliment! Can't think of anything to say, then "I don't know what to write but asgfdhgf I liked it." is fine!

Seriously, I don't care WHAT you put, because it shows me you cared enough to take a few second to show that love. I recognize and look for my regular commenters, even the ones who leave just a heart or "extra kudos".

Forgot to comment? Leave the fic open on your phone or get in the habit of dropping SOMETHING right as you finish. If you had time to make it through the last 100 words, you can probably tap an emoji. It's likely more of a habit to build up than anything.

Read it in one go and it's all a blur? "I read this all in one go and it's a blur, but I loved it!" We don't need specifics; just tell us you loved it on the chapter you stopped on. That in itself is a compliment because Hey! You loved it so much you had to keep reading!

Personal feedback? Well, I'll never say no to friends gushing about stories to me! And it might not be the same for everyone, but if you stop commenting on AO3 and only tell me personally...my assumption is you don't like it enough to say it publicly. I've spent many a time wondering why people stopped giving that support and what I should do better. If it's a friend, try asking them which they prefer! We can go back and reread (and do!) AO3 comments. Much harder on discord/dms/etc.

Owing authors? Look, we put a lot of time and work into writing and providing content for free. Hours of idea planning, actual writing, editing, catering to requests, etc. My partner once said I have a second job, writing, but I don't get paid. If you read and enjoyed something that someone put a lot of work into, it's nice to take a few seconds and tell them that.

You don't owe authors comments. They also don't owe you free writing. Sometimes, you forget there is an author at all when you're reading. But there is. A real person put out a story hoping you'd love it, or connect to it. You'd see yourself in the writing and feel less alone, or cheered up when you have a bad day.

Writing is art, and all we want to do is connect with you. Comments help bridge that gap.

At last, some details!

(A while back on @srmthg we had a zine interest check, and it remains open for any additional suggestions/feedback about what you'd like the zine to be (you can also shoot this blog an ask) but I don't plan on doing a second interest check. If enough people feel this is a mistake, there's still time to do one, but as it stands I don't see the point. I will continue to accept feedback and take it into account moving forward!)

By the way, my name is @netbug009 and I'm your friendly head mod for this project! This will be my first time running a zine, but I've been helping run projects in this fandom for 18 years!

The Format

SRMTHG Zine (cooler name tbd) will be a free PDF zine scheduled to release on September 18th, 2024, AKA the 20th anniversary of the series' first episode!

I know a lot of folks (myself included) like to have nice, shiny, hard copies of zines, and I hope to get the zine onto a publishing on demand site such as Lulu to let people buy them at-print-cost if they'd like, but a free digital edition will be the first priority. Since this zine is a celebration of the anniversary of a relatively small fandom, I want as many people to be able to access and enjoy it as possible! Plus, this is my first time running a zine, so I think it's smart to keep it simple. This also lets us worry less about page counts - if a lot of cool people contribute cool stuff, a PDF can be a chonk as we want!

The Content

The zine will include both fanart and fan fiction (and maybe even a few QR codes to some other digital goodies like AMVs and fanmixes if there's enough contributor interest!)

Light shipping will be allowed, with a few exceptions - no adult x child and no monkey x human ships will be allowed. (This was THE overwhelming request in the interest check and is not open for debate.)

We're going for a general vibe and love the idea of getting copies into the hands of voice actors/staff, which should give you a rough idea of the type of content we're going for - if it's too creepy/fetishy to hand to Ciro at a convention, it's too creepy/fetishy for the book. (That said, Monkey Team is a very silly and weird show with a love for classic horror tropes so I hope people don't let that limit their imaginations too much if they wanna do something spoopy!)

NO AI WORK WILL BE USED OR ACCEPTED IN THE CREATION OF THIS ZINE. I hope that'd be a given but just to be 100% clear, no.

Tables, Ladders, and Chairs: A Writing Crawl

I'm nostalgic for good old-fashioned writing crawls, but I'd like to introduce a community element to it, and hence, this was born! Each bolded word or phrase has a corresponding purple writing challenge to it. Tackle the challenge by yourself and work your way through the story, or reblog and let others send in challenges!

Tables, Ladders, and Chairs: A Writing Crawl.

As an up-and-coming new professional wrestler, you've got a long journey ahead of you to reach the top of your career. Think you've got what it takes to hoist the championship? Then step into the ring, if you dare....

Indies: Short for 'Independents' these small wrestling promotions are where wrestlers spend years building their craft and gaining fans before they get their big break. This is your first stop. Write 100 words to warm up while you get the hang of this new profession.

Sell a Move: Wrestling is part combat sport, part dance. You and your opponent must work together so the match looks both realistic and entertaining. 'Selling' is how wrestlers make their opponent's offense look devastatingly painful. In the next 300 words, include a character getting injured (big or small). If it doesn't fit, then write 300 more words.

Entrance Music: Who wants to walk to the ring in silence? No thanks! Like clothes, the theme a wrestler chooses says a lot about them. What kind of theme will you choose? Put your playlist on shuffle and sprint until the end of the song.

Ring gear: Clothing and style are an easy way to further a wrestler's persona. Are they tough? Dark and Moody? Do they wear wrestling trunks that look shamelessly similar to a Speedo, or do they look like they just stumbled out of a frat house? As you work with costuming to select your attire, write five sentences describing a character's clothing.

Heel turn: Sometimes, being the good guy doesn't work out, but that's okay! Being the bad guy is more fun anyway. In wrestling, this is called a heel turn, and it often involves betraying a friend, or beating the shit out of one or more people. While you let the weight of your actions sink in, write 5 lines said by, or about, the antagonist.

Tables: Taking a tough move? Don't worry! We'll break your fall with a nice wooden folding table. Oh, sorry, did I say break your fall? I meant break your bones...common mix-up. While you nurse your wounds, table your current scene and write five lines in a different one.

Ladders: Ready to climb to new heights? Good, because if you want to win this match, you'll need to scale a 20-foot ladder before anyone else. Did someone else get to the ladder first? Just push 'em off! The concrete floor absorbs way more impact than you'd think...As you climb the ladder, do a pyramid sprint (sprint to 100 words & rest, then 200 & rest, then 300 & rest, before returning to 200 and 100).

Chairs: Don't get your hopes up, this isn't to catch a breather. In fact, a folding chair is a wrestler's best friend! A good whack (or 10) with one will take your pesky opponent out of commission for weeks. As you debate how many swings to take, roll a D10 and write that many hundred words.

Extreme Rules: Seems like you've made a few enemies on your path to the top. It's time to squash your rivals once and for all in an extreme rules match. Anything goes, and the only limits are the bounds of your imagination (and your morals). While you consider bringing a gun to a fistfight, welcome the chaos and try to beat the 50-headed hydra*

** The 50-headed Hydra is a challenge to write 500 words in five minutes or less. "Spelling" and "grammar" are optional.

Tag Team: Not every wrestler does a match solo. In fact, wrestlers commonly join forces with one another to form tag teams and fight in a 2-v-2 match. As you search for a tag partner, participate in a ten-minute word war against at least one other person. If you lose, repeat until you win.

Iron-Man Match: This wrestling match is a race against the clock. You and your opponent must wrestle for an hour straight. Whoever gets the most pins/submissions in that time is the winner. Write for an hour. You can halve the time if you work in the words 'iron man.'

Main Event: After all the sacrifices, you're finally one of the top stars in the company, which means your matches are last. It's your job to give the crowd a night they won't forget. As you close the show, look up what time sunset was. Add ten minutes and sprint for that long.

Wrestlemania: This is it, the big night. The Super Bowl for people who think defenders should just choke out the QB. The arena is packed. There's so many pyrotechnics that 4th of July is jealous. Soak it in; this is all for you. At the biggest match of your career, roll a D100 and sprint for that many minutes.

Championship: This is it! After all this time, you're finally booked in a match to win gold. Time to show the crowd what kind of champion you'll be. As you wrestle like your life depends on it, sprint to the end of the current scene or chapter.

"The Winter Wall" (Story Below Cut)

"Mom, what's for breakfast today?" Craig chirped, sliding down the stairs and climbing into his usual seat at the kitchen table.

"Mornin' baby, I'm making pancakes and eggs this morning. What are your plans today, little man?" said Craig's mother, with a bright smile across her face as she flipped the doughy, flat pancake in the pan.

"Hm, me, Kelsey, and Marie are all going to the creek like usual. We're gonna meet up with the horse crew and try and find this cool new area," Craig excitedly moved in his chair, reaching into his bag to retrieve his trusty map. He then opened it to point to a yellowed field of grass? wheat? Nobody knew, but it was a yellow field of something.

"JP, one of the horse boys, gave us the tip when he was grazing the grass near our Stump the other day. He's pretty cool, though." Craig turned back around as his mother placed the plate stacked with eggs and two pancakes alongside a glass of apple juice in front of him.

"That's nice baby, make sure you wear your coat and mitts today. It's starting to get chillier and chillier this time of year. I don't need you catching a cold, Craig." His mother warned playfully, handing Craig his pinkish red sweater and mitts.

As Craig began to shovel his food down like it was his last meal ever, he grabbed the coat and mitts and, begrudgingly, placed them upon his person. He shot a slightly annoyed look at Jessica, his little sister, for laughing snidely as Craig was forced to wear his outside battle gear. He then rushed to the door before he was halted by his eldest brother, Bernard, and forced to put on his heavy-duty snow shoes instead of his usual play ones.

A deep sigh fell from Craig's mouth. All these rules, all these regulations, man; wasn't America supposed to be for the free? He wondered as he placed each boot on each foot, lacing the ties like so.

After having Bernard check his work, he felt pleased with himself for having the 100% okay to finally play outside. Opening the door, he was greeted by Kelsey and Marie, who were excited to have a fun, new day of play.

Unfolding his map as they walked into the creek, small droplets of snow began to drift slowly, drift, drift, and drift to the ground. Kelsey giggled playfully, commenting that the winter faeries had granted them the pleasure of a good adventure ahead of them; Marie simply sighed as if not wanting to be there and wishing to do something else. Though, this was usual for her. She could never find a place where she felt as though she belonged. Except maybe once with cow kid.

"So, according to JP the Stallion, there should be a slightly overgrown path that we can slip through if we're careful that leads to the Everyellow." Craig says enthusiastically, searching around him for signs of any sort of entrance, even sending Kelsey and Marie on their own to find one. However, the snow continues to fall silently to the ground; their hopes of finding a path in the current climate thwarted.

"Craig, I think we should go back to the stump, it's getting pretty thick out here and most of this area is uncharted," Marie shivered through chattering teeth, the cold getting to her through her hoodie…"We could seriously get hurt."

Craig paid no mind to his friends' cries, only focusing on the sole task at hand: finding that entrance! As Craig looked around him and the snow began to fall faster and harder, Kelsey and Marie became mere fragments in Craig's eyes as the snow created a strong, white wall between them. Their muffled voices sounded defeated, even afraid, at the sudden onslaught of the storm. The turning autumn leaves began to hurl themselves around Craig, as he imagined himself to be in an episode of that show his parents watch, Game of Thrones, or whatever.

He imagined a towering wall made of ice and snow…he imagined the leaves to be fairies and sprites hurling around him. As he squinted his eyes to the southeast, he could make out…but just barely, the shape of a rough, tracked through passageway covered in bramble. As the wind moved some of the lighter snow, it must have made the passageway more visible!

Craig began to have a calmer mind, passing through the bramble; and the storm slowly began to let up. The snow began to cease falling, but the cold lingered in the air; Craig's breathe the only source of heat in any of this unforgiving creek. As he struggled near the end of the passageway, he hurled himself forward and broke the light, dying vines that covered it; landing himself in a scene of beautiful, golden rows of a wheat-like plant.

As Craig glanced around, he noticed that the sun was now out, and some of the snow had begun to melt. 

"Craig!" He heard a familiar voice cry out; "Craig!!" He heard another.

Turning around, he sees both Kelsey and Marie waving their hands and running towards them.

"The sun came out; and as some of the snow melted, we noticed that we found a you-sized patch in some vines and bramble and followed it here. Dude, this is amazing!" Marie excitedly ran around in the wheat.

"This…is not what I expected, but it sure is beautiful." Kelsey mentioned, motioning her hands in front of her to really catch in the scene's beauty.

In the distance, the shallow galloping of hooves and human produced neighing can be heard. Had JP been watching over them this whole time? Craig wondered this but shook it off. He decided to take in this moment in his heart drive forever. 

"This was the best day ever, Craig!" Marie's voice rang in his head over and over; words neither of them-Kelsey nor Craig-thought they would ever hear.

Like it was said, that's valid as hell. I understand both sides here and I'll briefly mention that dark fics get less reblogs because many blogs are not specifically aimed for this kind of content want and might not have a side blog for this. Reblogs are what gives inspiration, room for improvement and excitement. But it's still not the best to say 'i don't care about likes' because that's blatantly ignoring the fact that people still like it, even if they write it to you or not and that they enjoyed reading this. Reblogs are something more appreciated and more detailed but when i find a fic and see it has 900 notes, even if there aren't many reblogs I'll be drawn to it because apparently many people liked it. Also many many fic authors, with more different interests that don't attract attention have 30-40 notes and no reblogs and would probably die to have 900 notes and just a few reblogs. STILL understandable feelings you have but that's a fact. Also it's good you don't post because you'll feel worse, mental health is important but I want to add this and you can agree or disagree, idc. You said ‘why post when i know not that many will read', yes but many will. i get excited as fuck when i see an update of this story. Many others do too, 90, 100, 1000 people, they do. Might not be a lot but from my side these people need to be appreciated and not just want more and more. Of course want more and of course hope other reblogs come but appreciate the ones you already have.

I appreciate you trying (I think) and I get this is your opinion, but I actually don't care about likes. I never had. Yes they are nice and I find appreciation for them sure, but likes don't tell me anything. At least not to me. Someone liking my work actually doesn't always mean they "like" my work. The amount of people who like fics to save for later is astronomical and like someone else said, liking a fic doesn't tell me what you like about it. A like doesn't tell me what you'd like to see more of or what really stood out to you so that I can remember to include more of that. I genuinely meant it when I said I'd rather have 100 notes over several hundred if 90% of the notes were people just reblogging and telling me what they actually liked instead of leaving it to my imagination

5. What do you wish someone would ask you about Your beauty never ever scared me? Answer it now!

I think the inspiration for it in the first place! I technically wanted to write a Beauty and the Beast-inspired story, but halfway through planning I abandoned a lot of these aspects in favour of including a bunch of characters as cameos. (I kept the rose, though it had a different use.) It was very intriguing to explore a human curse (something I've now explored a bit, but always from Jenny's POV, as I realise. I'll shed light on Vastra's POV at some point in a different fic I think)

(11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is? Okay we all know I'm extremely partial to my wives XDD I *will* make everything about them (yes ik it's annoying <3 But this is my account heheh), and will include them even in other works for a bit at least. It is 100% because I relate a lot to many aspects of them - the fun of Jenny's horrible parents, queerness, and the isolation they both feel to name some of them - and I'm well-aware of it XD Also my brain chose them as my special interest years agooo.)

20. If you wrote a prequel to Lizard Queen, what would it involve?

Oh, I have two answers for this... Either Vastra getting cursed in the first place and navigating life as a tiny lizard (maybe she meets Strax somehow just because.), OR the story of Jenny's mother and what happened to her. (As a sequel, I'd look at Vastra finding the ruins of her realm.)

22. Who is your favorite character in The Knight and the Dragon and why?

I'm obviously in no way biased because a) I wrote it and b) it has the wives, and since choosing either of them feels like cheating, I'm gonna say... Out of the rest of the cast, Ada? I think. I loved bringing her character to life in a different setting, especially since she's a character I very rarely see anywhere (and she had potentialll!!!) Her story can be adapted beautifully, and I feel like she would flourish with a job or hobby like that, working with herbs and healing. I'm definitely going to include her in Turn Loose the Mermaids btw!

47. If the pirate/mermaid AU (all together or each part on their own) was a pair of shoes, what kind would it be? Describe the shoes.

You really went with this one, hu... Okay, I'm thinking leather boots, worn, been through quite a lot, but very solid shoes you can always rely on. They're a pretty inconspicuous brown, a bit broken in parts but fixed up. They go almost up to your knee, hugging your legs very comfortably. They're also padded so they keep you warm in even the darkest winter nights. The laces on the sides have been added later to help the boots stay together, and they have beautiful jewels in different shades of green on the side that shimmer in the sun.

I have a bunch for this, I think XDD (Especially since archive-locking my fics my kudos have declined a lottt)

The first one would be A Lonely Place, which is a sort of Fantasy AU for the Paternoster Gang! I love how I came to explore pollution and environmental destruction in it, and also how Jenny and Vastra - in this at least - reluctantly grew closer. (Please they are such disasters especially in the beginning)

Then my Turn Loose the Mermaids series in which Jenny's family are a bunch of shitty scammer pirates, and Vastra is a mermaid (and later can shift). The first two parts are out rn, and I hope to write more of it soon-ish (uni is killing me I'm so sorry)

There'd also be my winter rose in which one Silurian goes splash in a river when it's very cold :D I love how that literally was my prompt for writing it...

And last but not least, I want Popcorn to get some more views! It's a Strax-centric fic (I knoooow, there's not much interest in that, but give my boy (gn) some love) set shortly after Demons Run, and it takes a look at Strax dealing with silence and peace after... well, a lifetime spent only in war zones? The Doctor gives him a way to cope with that, but it escalates a little. It was I think my first full Strax-POV fic, and he honestly has such a unique and intriguing view (which I wish Big Finish would explore instead of once again reducting Strax to comedic relief like the show already did :/)

(this is my version of canon, so I'm sorry if it's not what you wanted lmao) First of all, we're not going to talk about how you got with this man, but if he (hypothetically) had a partner, it'd probably be very neglectful. Cody doesn't take care of himself all that well; I mean, he's an addict; he's pretty much always focused on making new viruses he can test on himself, so there's no attention going your way. If there was, likely, it's just trialling a virus on you, which would be rare as he prefers to feel the after-effects of his viruses so he can note them down more accurately. You'd have to tend to him quite a bit as many of his viruses have very harsh side effects, which can leave him writhing in pain for hours or even (temporarily) paralysed. The whole relationship would be very one-sided, with you being neglected 99% of the time.

(reader isn’t too young, maybe a few years younger than the creepy <;3)

Older Brother! Ben Drowned & Younger Sibling (GN)! Reader

In my canon Ben was an only child so the reader is platonically adopted as Ben’s younger sibling. He’s very happy to have a younger sibling! Growing up, for them, they didn’t have too many great male role models so they try their best to be a greater role model for you. He definitely plays video games with you; purposely losing to make you feel good about winning (or if you lose Ben makes sure you win the next round!), he’d also introduce you to his friends (namely Jeff and EJ, as he lives with them) and they, too, adopt you as their lil’ sibling.

Older Sibling! Nina & Younger Sibling (GN)! Reader

Nina 100% makes it her sworn duty to protect you from any dangers that may present itself to you! They're very happy to have another younger sibling and makes sure to love you as they did their brother, Chris. She does tons of things with you from baking at stupid times of day/night, to picnics, to just a bunch of fun activities! Their girlfriend, Clockwork/Natalie, definitely adopts you as her younger sibling so that she can be a better role model than her older brother was to her.

Older Sister! Dina & Younger Sibling (GN)! Reader

Dina, having never had a sibling before and being a completely lonely child, is overjoyed at the idea of being a older sister! She's very caring and gives you tons of cute angel-like nicknames/petnames such as "Angel", "Feather", "Avengelos" (Greek name meaning messenger or good angel), "Dove" and more. Dina loves nature and spends every moment she can outside and definitely pulls you outside so you can feel the wind against your face, the grass between your toes, and can hear the many calming sounds of nature. Picnics are also a must; a basket packed with good food, and sweet or savoury snacks is always taken and after you've both filled yourselves with food you lay down and go cloud-gazing, laughing at the ideas of what certain clouds look like. All in all, Dina is the best sister 100/10

Toby headcanons

Connie (Toby's mum (or mom if ur weird >_>)) had Tourette's when she was younger. She grew out of it before having kids, though.

Loves axe-throwing! He's pretty good at it, too!

Gets along quite well with EJ! They're both quite artistically talented and love sharing tips together.

Also just likes EJ's being in his presence. He feels safe.

He wants a pet raccoon. (so do I :()

Has a tic of "Guess who made waffles!" from Invader Zim

Definitely likes vintage things.

His most common motor tics are throwing his head back, hitting his chest, and cracking his neck. These can be quite dangerous and he definitely hurts himself without knowing.

His most common vocal tics are coprolalia (the vulgar/swearing tic), the waffles tic and just general shouting/loudness.

Can't taste but loves sour/savoury things over sweet things.

Collector. Of what you might be asking? Anything he can get his grubby little mitts on.

Has freckles. Like, tons. They're mostly on his shoulders and back, though.

hello hyper anon! :D i hope you’re doing well, today!

Ben Drowned w/ Newbie GN! Reader

Woah. New friend? Not the most sociable of the residents at the mansion but is either a) tasked to tour you or b) has a connection with you! He’d show you around the mansion, tell you the many quirks that the mansion has, the shortcuts and whatnot. As they tell you about the “chores” that everyone has, they definitely moan about their own (electricity/tech mainly). Showing you the many rooms the mansion has, such as a very large library, laundry room, the basement (that has no real use, he guesses Toothpick has it for some unknown aesthetics?), the game room (his personal favourite! It’s got new and old games, virtual and board games, it’s stocked!) and the other many, many rooms (Ben swears the mansion grows with every passing day. He’s glad he doesn’t live here!). Finally, showing you to your bedroom (where you can choose to reside or you can find your own small home if you prefer privacy.), they lay themselves on your bed and definitely did not nap (jk they did).

Ben, being a bit of a nervous soul and liking to keep to himself, wouldn’t be the best tour-guide. They’d probably forget some key details (such as the rules that need to be followed if you reside in The House.) and probably, maybe, definitely get the both of you lost, seeing as though they don’t live there and instead live with EJ and Jeff in a small house further away.

If you do decide to live in The House, you’d definitely have to get more details from other people but your initial tour-guide and information-giver(?), Ben, was quite nice!
