Hyrule just knew this was going to be a tedious call. So he smirked at Mo. “Glad this is your call.”
Mo grumbled, his eyebrows pressed flat just above his eyes in complete exasperation. Hyrule bit his tongue to stop himself from laughing - he was pretty sure Mo would make him walk back to the station if he burst out into giggles at this point.
Sighing heavily, Mo stepped out of the truck first as Impa spoke to the patient. Hyrule followed suit, taking in the scene. The patient in question was a man in his early twenties, with hair slicked so heavily with gel that Hyrule could probably make it into any shape he wanted. His small ears had gauges that were definitely too large for them, with small glassy eyes hidden under heavy black brows. The man was pacing in front of Impa, his tank top too tight for his chest, the smell of alcohol wafting so heavily in the air Hyrule was getting drunk off the fumes.
“Hey,” Impa greeted dully. “Drunk in public, fell and hurt his wrist. I can take him in, but he might need that wrist checked out, he won’t shut up about it.”
Mo walked over to the patient, towering over him. “Hey, buddy. What happened?”
The man hiccuped, slapping the back of his hand against Mo’s chest. Hyrule yet again held back another laugh, but it was barely contained, coming out as a squeak followed by a snort. Mo stared at the man as he went on a tirade.
“Well, my girl and I were fighting, and I decided to take a walk to cool down, you know?” The man explained. “You know, to be a good person and all. ‘Cause chicks can get a little crazy, and I was gettin’ upset and that’s jus’ not nice.”
“What happened to your wrist?” Mo clarified, voice growing heavier. Hyrule bit the the inside of his cheek.
“Well, I decid’d t’ take a walk,” the man went on, “And I saw this rock and just—” the man growled and jumped, making Impa, Mo, and Hyrule all startle a hair, before he blew his hand across the air with a whistle. “Saw a rock and kicked it.”
“Your wrist,” Mo grated out. “What happened. To your wrist.”
“Right, right, sorry, man,” the patient slurred onward, patting Mo’s chest again. “I kicked the rock and watched it, didn’t see where was goin’ ‘n’ fell. Caught myself with my wrist. Hand. You know?”
“You wanna get checked out at the hospital?” Mo asked.
“I mean,” the man swayed, shrugging in what looked like an attempt to play it off and be cool. Hyrule leaned against the ambulance, catching Mo’s impatient energy as it was three in the morning, but he also wanted to see this play out. “I d’nno if tha’s—i’s probably fine. I’m fine, man, don’t worry.”
“Perfect, then you’re going with me to jail once they evaluate you,” Impa chimed in easily.
The man blinked a couple times, registering her words, and then shifted his weight between his feet. “Well. I mean. It does hurt a bit.”
Mo took a steadying breath. “Let’s get in the truck.”
As Hyrule watched his partner lead the dazed drunkard by, he exchanged a look with Impa. She wasn’t nearly as amused as he was. He shrugged somewhat apologetically. “Well, saves you an arrest.”
“Wastes your time, though,” she retorted, crossing her arms.
“Wastes Mo’s time,” Hyrule corrected. He finally got a smile out of her with that.
Mo got the patient settled on the bench seat and took some baseline vital signs, all of which were normal aside from a slightly elevated heart rate. He gave Hyrule a thumbs up, and the medic hopped in the driver’s seat up front. As he started to accelerate down the road, he tuned in to the conversation happening in the back.
“Dude, you’re like—jacked,” the patient commented. Hyrule nearly drove off the road from laughing so hard.
Mo sighed heavily. “How badly does your wrist hurt? Can you move your hand?”
“Oh yeah, for sure for sure,” the patient replied. Hyrule heard nothing for a moment and then the patient yelled. “Ok dude, maybe not maybe not!”
“All right, just rest your hand and take it easy,” Mo advised, leaning over to emphasize his point.
“Bro, I’m so glad you’re here ‘cause like this is serious,” the patient commented.
Hyrule was not going to survive this ride. He was going to be absolutely insufferable on the way back.
When they finally dropped off the patient to an even more exasperated looking Legend, the pair plopped in the truck and were silent for a moment.
“Dude,” Hyrule said seriously. “I am so glad you were there. He could’ve died.”
“Link, I swear to G—”

The links with their kids
Wild, sage, twilight and courage kids just chew off the leash somehow
The triplets kids stomach is a black hole, they can eat anything. For some reason zelda told Cal to eat a frog straight from the ground and somehow eating an alive frog didn't kill him.
The cringe links are gremlins, koridai's kid is the class clown that always ends up in fights and courage's kid is the definition of woke up and chose violence. Definitely lightly bullies his siblings and porpoisely causes chaos and gray hairs for the links who aren't courage.
Sky's kid is just like him when it comes to how they can sleep anywhere. But hey at least reader wouldn't have to deal with the little one crying at night when they were a baby. Probably just watches the fights between the links and their siblings with a snack.
The idea wise that Legend's kid seems to be exactly the opposite of their fathers personality intill they feel petty and just ues any object near them as a weapon, the said can be the same for sages child.
Wars daughter has black mail for EVERYONE and uses it against her other fathers when they won't give her what she wants and watches the fights with sky's kid. Little girl is already a manipulator, blame that on wars and Artemis.
Time, fierce and first kids are the only ones trying to stop the fights.
Ravio's kid is already knows how to do tax evasion
Hyrule and fours kids are those kids who just stare at people they don't know(you know those ones)
They absolutely do. It becomes a game of getting more heavy duty leashes and the kids finding more and more creative ways to slip out of them.
The trip kids for sure inherit their fathers' appetites. it's a problem. Moreso when they go from food to more...adventurous snacks.
Their kids are the WORST. they are the kids that are always the loudest in class and get kicked out for making a fool out of the teachers. Courage's kid for sure makes fun of all his siblings, does not matter if they're older or younger. The other links are sick of his shit gnogng
Sky's kid? Best kid. For sure. Across the board. Biggest cuddle bug and has the biggest smiles. he's such a cutie patootie.
Legend's kid being a sunshine child is also so fucking funny to me especially if Sage's kid is also the same. My personal hc for Sage's kid is they're on the shyer side. Like they don't like people and they'll hide behind sage's legs whenever they get the chance bc c'mon scary papa bear? Sign me UP.
Wars daughter is ABSOLUTELY the mastermind behind EVERY snack heist. She had dirt on EVERYONE and only one who can ever get a step ahead is Reader and even then it's fifty fifty. i imagine she protects the softer kids yk? Starts fights between the cringe kids.
Those kids are the backbone of the house fr.
Ravio's kid is the family accountant. who yes, does commit tax evasion.

Chapter 4: Malon?
(A/N: The chain explores the village, do some training. Warriors gets stuck in his thoughts and has Time, Twilight, and Tyra help him. Is it time for the chain and Tyra to finally meet Time’s wife Malon?)
Narrators POV:
The next morning after Tyra’s nightmare, the chain spent the day exploring the village, seeing as they were too tired to do so yesterday after stocking up on supplies. Warriors, Hyrule, Wind, and Four went to check out the blacksmith and see what was there. Wild and Legend went looking around the market.
Sky woke up late, and met up with wild and Legend for a bit, before heading off to go pray at a goddess statue by the village’s small church for Hylia.
Time, Twilight, and Tyra, after walking around for a bit decided to head into the forest to do some training (A/N: They didn’t stray too far from the village). They chose a nice quiet area with not too many trees around. Time wanted them to have some privacy but still be able to spot any danger that came lurking.
Warriors’ POV:
Tyra seemed a bit off this morning, she was more quiet than usual. ‘She has the classic “Link trait” -as the nine of us like to call it- of going silent when you’re trying to convince yourself that you’re okay whether mentally or physically doesn’t matter.’
But she did seem to cheer up whenever someone came over to give her a hug.
‘Ha! Leg had to be forced by traveler to go up and hug her. Though he didn’t put up much of a fight as I thought he would.’ Maybe he wanted to give her a hug but was nervous/ shy about it. Though when Time and Twilight saw Vet give Tyra a hug (which was proper) all they did was smile.
‘Tyra, ranch hand, and the old man didn’t join in on teasing Legend with the rest of us. I wonder why?’ Wind, Hyrule, Four, Wild, Legend, Sky, and I all finished what we were doing by midday. Time had told us (minus Sky- Sky was told by Wild) that he, Twi, and Tyra were going into the forest to do some training.
So we decided to join them. when we arrived to where they were training we were shocked still at what we saw.
*Ten minutes Prior*
Narrators POV:
Time, Twilight, and Tyra all finished their warmups of going through the motions of their fighting. When Time thought of an idea that would spice up their training.
“Kitten, you’re ambidextrous like Twilight right?” Time asked. Tyra turned to Time with a smile on her face.
“Yes, pa trained me t’ be ambidextrous since I was young. I’d say starting at 4 he started training me that. Why?” She questioned. Time and Twilight were once again shocked by her answer to the question and just by her in general.
‘I guess Twi/ I truly knew that she would need this skill.’ Time and Twilight both thought at the same time. Time quickly recovered from his shock asking the question he really wanted to ask Tyra.
“I thought it would be more interesting to see if while sparring you can fend off against both me and Twilight. What do you say?” Tyra thinks about this, she’s not sure how Time wants her to fend off him and Twilight.
So she asks, “Do ya mean by sword and shield?” Time nods.
“You should be able to quickly change which hand is holding your sword and which hand is holding your shield.” Tyra thinks a bit more on this. Then she remembers the years leading up to and after her father’s death; how she secretly trained herself how to fight wielding two swords.
When she first started she struggled so much in figuring out the best way to move along with both swords while swinging the swords effectively. Over time she developed the best way to fight with two swords.
The technique basically combined a sword dance with her style of fighting. Which consisted of flips, twirls, jump strikes, and splits. “I ‘ave a better idea.” Tyra starts. Time and Twilight look at her curiously.
“Prey tell.” Says Time. Who’s not sure where she’s going with this.
“Round when I was 14 maybe 15, I started secretly teachin myself how to fight with two swords.” Time and Twilight’s eyebrows jump into their hairlines. As Twilight’s eyes and Time’s one eye go wide in surprise. ‘That’s not what I expected.’ They both thought.
Tyra sheepishly smiled as she scratched the back of her neck. “Heh, I wasn’t any good when I started. But, over time I figured out how to wield two swords in a fight. When pa would take me on some of his missions ‘round Hyrule taking out monsters.”
“They were terrorizin’ people. An’ when pa would get injured I would pick up his dropped sword. An’ along with my sword I would take out the remaining monsters with little to no injuries saving pa!” Tyra explained.
After learning that they had to test out Tyra’s abilities wielding two swords. Time handed her his smaller sword keeping his Goron sword. Then the three of them got in position for the sparring match. Tyra was in the middle with Twilight in front of her and Time behind her.
Soon the match started with Twilight making the first strike. Tyra easily blocked his attack with one sword while twisting her body. Her right side which was holding her Ordon sword which had blocked the attack was closer to her father. They stood there in a temporary stalemate before Twilight backed up from her.
Then she heard Time move to make his attack. Just as he’s about make contact with her, she quickly turns around and holds up both swords crossed in a X above her head to stop Time’s attack.
Time tries to use his strength to knock her down on to her back. But she shifts her feet to be more steady underneath her and put all her body weight into staying up right and all her strength into pushing Time back. Tyra succeeds in pushing Time away from her, then in a spinning kick that hits him square in the abdomen, she knocks him down to the ground.
The three of them continue this song and dance with neither Time nor Twilight managing a hit on her even once, for ten long minutes. When the rest of the chain arrived they are surprised to see the three of them sparring together.
(A/N: They expected to see only Tyra and Twilight sparring with Time watching and coaching from the sidelines.)
Time and Twilight have both worked up a sweat over the last ten minutes. While Tyra has not even broken a sweat the entire time. The scene that shocked the others is Tyra in the middle of Time and Twilight having blocked an attack from both of them on either side of her.
Time attacked from her right and Twilight attacked from her left. Tyra was holding both of them back and steady, while Time and Twilight were struggling to knock her down and get even one hit on her. They stayed like that for a few more moments before Tyra disarms both of them in a twirl moving both her body and swords.
Tyra then places the flat sides of each sword lightly against Time and Twilight’s unprotected necks; right under their chins. The entire area was silent as no one knew what to say. Time and Twilight are frozen staring owlishly at Tyra with their mouths gaping. A long moment passes before Wars, Legend, Sky, Four, Wind, Hyrule, and Wild start applauding and congratulating Tyra. Which wakes up Time and Twilight from their shocked silence.
All this praise causes Tyra to turn sheepish with a blush spreading down her neck with a shy smile on her face. Time and Twilight both clap her on the back with proud smiles on their faces. At that turns around bringing both into a tight hug, hiding her face between their chests.
Time and Twilight worry something is wrong until they hear Tyra let out an embarrassed laugh. “That was amazing!” Wind yelled. Four and Legend both grunt and nod in agreement.
“Holy Hylia, I never knew that was possible.” Said Sky. Wild had pulled out his slate and started recording the scene when they saw the standstill. “I caught it on the slate, so we can view it later. Tyra, you have to teach me that!” Exclaimed Wild with a fire in his eyes.
Hyrule was mumbling to himself saying, “Wha… how? Huh? I…” Warriors was quiet for a while remembering that he read something in his Hyrule royal archive about something regarding Tyra’s technique of fighting. “… Huh. I guess the royal family was wrong.” Mumbles Warriors.
Warriors mumbled that so quietly Twilight and Tyra almost missed it. After that display of strength by Tyra the others were scared of sparring with her. Time, Twilight, and Tyra were too tired to keep sparring so they sat on the side. “What? You’re tired? You don’t look it.” Said Wild. The other’s didn’t believe that Tyra was tired.
“Believe it. It takes a lot of energy to perform that technique. Spent years building up my energy to use the technique.” Tyra explained. She may not look it but she’s about ready to collapse from exhaustion. Time and Twilight noticed this in the way she was carrying herself. Her eyes would drop a tad bit every now and then. Tyra was swaying very slightly on her feet, you wouldn’t catch it if you weren’t paying very close attention. Seeing how the other’s still didn’t believe Tyra, Time stepped in to shut them down.
“Alright, that’s enough. You seven have some sparring to catch up on.” The other’s noticed the disapproving look Time was giving them. “Yes, sir.” They all said. Two of them started sparring. When one lost another would replace them, they kept at it until they were tired.
When everyone was done they headed back to the inn for dinner. After dinner Warriors went up to Time, Twilight, and Tyra. “I can’t keep quiet any longer. I need to talk to you three privately.” Warriors said in his captain tone. The three Hylian’s nodded and Time lead them to the room he shares with Twilight, Tyra, and Wild. “Okay, prey tell why you can’t keep quiet any longer?” Questioned Time.
The three of them had noticed anytime Wars wasn’t preoccupied he was getting quiet and thinking about something the others weren’t privy to. Warriors very rarely went silent, he mostly goes silent when thinking about the War of Era’s. Or about something he’s learned about that wasn’t always true.
Twilight and Tyra couldn’t figure out what Warriors meant earlier in the forest. Warriors heaves a heavy sigh. “Where to start?” Warriors mumbles, loud enough for the three of them to hear him.
Warriors takes a deep breath to steal himself. The he looks to Time with a serious look on his face causing Time to straighten his back and give Wars the same look.
“Sprite, do you remember during the War of Era’s how you, me, and Artemis went looking through the royal archives?” Warriors finally asks after a moment.
That question surprises Time as he was not expecting that. Time calmed down some but was still serious when he answers the captain. “Yes, I do. Why are you bringing that up?” Questioned Time. Warriors motioned for all of them to take a seat.
Twilight and Tyra sit next to each other on one bed, while Time and Warriors sat on the bed across from them. Once they were all seated Warriors took a moment to find the best way to say what he wanted to tell them. The three of them let him gather his thoughts and waited patiently.
“Around midnight almost one, you fell asleep exhausted from all the reading remember?” Time nods when Warriors looked over to him.
“Well, Artemis and I stayed up a while longer. Then I stumbled across this book. Out of all the books in the archive- even the book talking about the Royal Family- it was the fanciest looking book.”
“And the book was all about the Hero of Twilight’s daughter’s life. When I first found it and read it I didn’t think much of it and put it from my mind after reading the whole thing. But looking back it seems like the book wasn’t finished.” Warriors started.
“What do you mean?” Time asked. Was there something wrong with the book? They knew Wars was far from done talking. “… There were blank pages towards the end of the book. It was like whoever wrote it never finished writing it, but it still somehow ended up in the Royal archive. Most of the book was blank pages. None of the pages mentioned how old she was when she died. Goddesses, her death wasn’t even mentioned!”
At that Time, Twilight, and Tyra looked at Warriors wide eyed. ‘How is this possible?!’ The three of them thought. There’s a tense silence for a few minutes before Warriors continues talking. “Artemis came over after I finished reading. I asked her why most of the pages were blank. At first she was confused as to why a book in the Royal archive had blank pages. So she used her magic to inspect the book and she discovered the reason why.”
Wars took a deep breath putting his head in his hands, while Time rubs soothing circles on his back. “… She discovered the reason was because there was a magic spell cast on the book. To keep the rest of the story hidden until the time was right. Back then I didn’t understand what that meant, but I do now. Once this journey’s over Tyra’s story will be completed in the book. Though that’s not what I really wanted to talk about.”
Wars took a deep breath. “I knew I had to tell you all this before saying what I really wanted. There was a section of the book that talked about Tyra’s dual sword wielding. But it said that she never perfected it. Now, that may be a side effect or done intentionally by the spell. I’m not sure.”
Wars sighed. “But also in that book it portrayed Tyra as some weak helpless Hylian who had a rough childhood. I only just remembered about the book when I saw the three of you sparring earlier.” Wars finished. Tyra thought long and hard about this.
“Hmm… Maybe the spell was put on the book ‘cause if ya read it during the War of Era’s then ya’ll would know what was t’ happen in the future an’ cause history t’ change. Which would cause many problems.” Tyra explained.
That made sense because not long before her 21st year Dusk had only started writing the Royal archive book on the Hero of Twilight. Royal archive books are only written after someone worthy of having their own story in the Royal archive dies.
“Ya only get get a book written ‘bout ya I the Royal archive after yer death. Not long ‘fore my birthday, Dusk ONLY just started writing pa’s book. The books are mostly for Royals, and great Hero’s.”
Tyra sighs happily. “When I was 5 pa took me to the Royal archive and showed me the book containing the story of the Hero of Time.” This surprised the three Links. Tyra laughed when she saw their faces.
“Pa said it took ‘im a few years to find the book. But when he did he noticed it had been hidden by someone who knew the Hero of Time. An’ anytime they saw the book they would likely break down, so they decided t’ hide it. They left a note with it saying why they hid the book.”
Tyra took a short moment before continuing. “The letter was never signed so we don’t know who hid the book. ‘Cause the book was hidden the Hero of Time’s story was never told or mentioned in the history of the kingdom. But when pa found it Dusk made sure that EVERYONE in the kingdom learned about the story.” Tyra finished.
Twilight and Warriors didn’t know what to say after learning that. At first Time was angry, then he was curious, then finally settled on grateful. ‘Well it took a while but it seems that I will be remembered eventually. Thanks pup.’ Thought Time.
A few moments passed before Tyra shyly admitted that she’s read Time’s story over a hundred times. That got Warriors laughing. Twilight didn’t know what to say so he stayed quiet.
Time was shocked at first before he got up with the biggest smile on his face they’ve ever seen, went over to Tyra and pulled her into a hug quietly thanking her. Tyra didn’t say anything but she did hug Time back tightly.
The next day they were leaving the village heading north. Just as the sun was about to start it’s descent a portal opened up in front of them. Being Tyra’s first time seeing the portal Twilight and Time told her so much about when she was growing up she was nervous.
But she was ready to pass through the disturbing black and purple portal. When they came out the other side of the portal they saw they were in another forest.
It was night so they found a small cave to camp in for the night. The next morning they ate a wonderful breakfast Wild cooked up, before heading out. Because it was so dark last night none of the ten Hylian’s could determine if any of them recognized it as their Hyrule. Not long after they started walking Time recognized the woods as the lost woods by Kokiri Forest. A bit later they get attacked by one of Time’s Moblins. After they all get healed by the fairies within the forest Time suggests they take a detour.
A few days back Tyra noticed Time writing a letter- her guess to Malon- during one of his watch shifts when she woke from a nightmare. It was not the one about Twilight- the nightmare was one of her more tame nightmares. It was a nightmare about the day Twilight turned into a wolf for the first time, but instead of Twilight it was Tyra in his place.
‘I know he already likely sent a letter t’ grandma Malon about pa and I. But t’ be meeting ‘er so soon… I’m not sure I’m ready yet, but can’t stop it now.’ Mused Tyra. They walked in silence for a while before Twilight spoke up.
“Alright, ya said ‘detour’ but where exactly is this? You’ve been awfully cheerful.” Time chuckled with a bright smile.
“Have I? Well, you could say this place is feeling a lot like home. Speaking of —-” Time says before being cut off by another voice.
“Yer back!!!” Exclaims Malon before running up to kiss Time.
(A/N: Quick warning it’s longer than the previous chapters. When writing the chapters I always hand write them first. Chapter five was 16 pages long! Oh, it almost killed me lol!)

Ok so daedra mun and I have been chatting about a plot ad I wanted to know if any Zelda peeps were interested.
Basically it goes like this:
Ganon woke up and chose violence and sent Yiga members to assassinate Siegbert, but Daedra gets in the way and is nearly killed for it.
Xander is pissed off and wants Hyrule to get their shit together or he’ll get them together for them, aka start a war
Siegbert is torn between being a good son/prince and a good bf. He’s used to attacks on his life from Nohrians but not from Hylians. His relationship with Zelda is tested.
We do not know how it ends yet but if you are interested please like! Or if you are in Discord send a message please! :D

Even if she has no clue why she should. So she sets out into Hyrule, to face evil minions, free giant mechanical beasts, meet the ghosts of people she once knew as friends, and save the world, all why trying to find her lost memories and why her personal identity did not match the identity many claim was hers 100 years ago.

Memory | Chapter 4
Summary: Link must relearn how to be a Champion before he defeats Calamity Ganon – but first, he needs to stop setting fires and backflipping off of cliffs. It’s too bad that his attempts to be a responsible hero keep getting interrupted by dumb things like owing people money, remembering hardly anything about who he is, and Yiga Clan assassins trying to kill him.
Rating: T for language, violence, dark stuff, and dumb, bad humor.

The Underappreciated Art of Dying Conveniently
When Link woke up the next morning, Beedle was busy setting his massive pack down just outside the stable.
Beedle waved a greeting to Link as he stumbled outdoors. “Oh ho ho! We meet again! I swear, we must have been married in a past life.”
Link rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Possibly. Or maybe you’re just stalking me.”
Beedle snorted. “Nonsense. I have a set schedule I follow in my travels around Hyrule. I think that technically makes you my stalker!”
It was altogether too early in the morning for Beedle’s chipper merchant shtick, but Link chuckled anyway. It was always good to see him. Also, he was running low on arrows. “I thought I saw you on the road yesterday,” he said.
A flicker of consternation passed through Beedle’s eyes, but it was so quick he might have imagined it. “You know me,” Beedle said cheerily. “Sixth sense for danger and all that.”
Link gave him a suspicious look, but chose not to press the issue. He’d known Beedle to hide in the woods from enemies before. He was shockingly good at it for the size of his pack.
As Beedle began to set up his makeshift storefront, Link cast his gaze around the stable and rolled his shoulders. He hadn’t slept well last night, so he was stiff and sore all over. Even worse, it was only around eight in the morning and he could already tell the weather was going to be miserable. It was nice and sunny now, but the warmth and stillness of the morning air portended a stifling and oppressive heat later in the day. He narrowed his eyes in displeasure.
And maybe it was only Link’s imagination, but the air still seemed to be tense. Molo and Breen were treating him normally enough, but what if that was a front?
Kish was definitely still angry. When Link had dragged himself out of bed, the stable owner had shot him a glare and muttered something that sounded suspiciously like “Yiga magnet.” Great. This day was getting off to a great start.
Link flopped down onto a seat by the cooking pot and rummaged through his bag of supplies for something to cook. He ended up dicing chunks of meat and Hylian shrooms, cooking them, and stabbing a skewer through them. The skewer was unseasoned, but at least it was hot and fresh from the pot.
Molo was reading a book across the pot from him. Breen was tending to the horses, and Kish was in the middle of some negotiations with Beedle. Link slumped a little when he saw Beedle pass a bundle of arrows to Kish. He knew that the stable dwellers were just going about their daily business, but it was hard not to feel like they were avoiding him.
He was lost in thought when Shamae interrupted him. “Mister Link!” she shouted. “Are you going to fight more guys today?”
Link swallowed, aware of the stable dwellers’ eyes on him. “Uh, I hope not.”
Shamae frowned. “Aw, man! But yesterday was awesome! You beat them up and Molo punched a guy in the face, then I got one in the head!” She enthusiastically mimed her actions in combat as she said them.
Link glanced at the bandage on Breen’s forehead. “It’s only awesome if no one gets hurt,” he said quietly.
Shamae was clearly disappointed, but she got distracted by a butterfly fluttering past her and wandered off. Link abruptly decided that he wanted to leave.
Link stomped back into the stable to retrieve his gear and then slapped a purple rupee onto the counter. It only covered half of his tab, but he figured he could return and pay the rest after the Calamity was gone. He stomped back out and went to Breen, who was tending to the horses. “Horse, please,” he demanded grumpily.
Breen eyed him with a frown. She looked like she was puzzling through several possible responses, which only irritated him more. “You should be nicer to the people taking care of your horse,” she said after a moment, trying and failing for some levity.
Link let out a sharp breath through his nose, and Breen relented, leading Princess out of his stall. He gave his horse a cursory pat on the nose and let him snuffle against his hand until Link pulled out an apple to feed him.
It was suffocating, being in a bad mood around people who may or may not be equally as irritated with him.
Link swung himself onto the white stallion and nudged him forward to the dirt road stretching south. Beedle glanced up at him as he passed and scrambled to his feet. “Link, wait!” he called. “I have to get to Wetland Stable by nightfall. I’ll go with you.”
Link grudgingly halted as Beedle gathered his wares up and slung his pack over his shoulders. The sidelong glances Kish, Ashe, Molo, and Breen were giving him prickled at the back of his neck. He twisted the reins in his fists in impatience.
Beedle caught up to him, and together they set out along the road. Part of Link wanted to be irritated at how slow he had to go for Beedle to keep up, but he had to admit that this was a nice change of pace. He had spent far too long alone in the wild, usually at a hard gallop or climbing all of the hills, trees, and mountains he possibly could. This slow, relaxed pace with a friend for company was welcome. He felt himself relax more and more as they got farther and farther away from the stable.
They reached the Thims Bridge, a simple wooden structure that spanned the Hylia River. Link had only crossed this bridge once before, when he had wanted to scout the Crenel Hills for shrines. It had also been a good vantage point to observe Hyrule Castle from afar.
Link sighed at unwelcome thoughts of the castle, and turned to Beedle instead. Whatever he had been about to say left his mind as he saw the vaguely ill look on Beedle’s face. “Uh, you all right there?” he asked, trying not to laugh.
“I looked over the edge,” he muttered.
Link snorted and glanced over the side of the bridge. “At least it’s a river and not a canyon. Hurts less if you fall.”
“Please do not mention canyons to me,” came Beedle’s groan from behind him. “I had a very bad experience at Tanagar Canyon with a dragon.”
Me too, Link was about to say, remembering his very poorly thought out attempts to shoot Dinraal’s horn. True to form, Revali had mocked him when he had finally resorted to calling up a gale. “Did one of your failed cooking experiments spit a fireball at you?” the Rito had asked snidely.
But Link’s lingering bad mood moved the conversation in another direction. “Seriously, I can’t believe you manage to be a traveling salesman with your fear of heights and monsters.”
“It’s why I’m not dead yet, obviously,” Beedle replied with good humor. “Not everyone can be as good at fighting as you. Especially not half-naked and armed with only a boko bow.”
Link cringed. Right. The first time he met Beedle, he had gone swimming in a river, only to find that bokoblins had stolen his clothes and gear. His plan to throw explosive barrels around their camp as revenge had gone very badly, and he accidentally lured monsters to a stable when he tried to buy arrows from Beedle. Also, Beedle had managed to cheat him out of a lot of rupees.
That was definitely not Link’s finest moment.
“Whatever,” he said rudely. Beedle only hooted with laughter.
By now, they had crested the rocky hill on the other side of the bridge. The rolling hills and plains of Hyrule Field stretched out before them, endlessly green, and the sky was a cloudless blue over their heads. If Link angled himself the right way, he could block out the Malice-infested castle and pretend that all was right in the world. Just him and his salesman buddy, palling around Hyrule.
While Link had been zoned out, Beedle had already started down the other side of the hill, looking a little wobbly under the weight of his pack. “My bugs aren’t going to deliver themselves to the stable, you know,” he called back.
Link nudged Princess into a trot to catch up. “What are you now, a bug delivery man?”
Beedle shook his head. “Lawdon wants to visit Gerudo Town, so he needs to brew some elixirs. I already tried explaining to him that he won’t be able to get in, but I don’t think he believes me…”
Link snickered. Maybe Lawdon knew the same trick he did. Then that absurd thought was replaced by a more serious question. “Do you do these sorts of special orders a lot?” Ashe’s lecture the night before had made him realize just how little he knew about how the way Hyrule’s economy currently functioned. He hadn’t really spent much time in towns or stables after he had woken up, and certainly hadn’t given much thought to how they managed to obtain all of their stuff.
“Only if it doesn’t conflict with my path around Hyrule,” said Beedle. “Most people who want special orders want them regularly delivered every few months or so, when I drop by their place again. I’ve got it worked out to where I pick up stuff from my suppliers in towns and unload it all at the next few stables before I hit the next town…”
Link had started to tune out, but not because he wasn’t interested. An uncomfortable feeling was settling in his gut. It felt sort of like indigestion, but more ominous. The feeling had been his constant companion for long enough that he knew there was an enemy around.
He nudged Princess to a halt, frowning uneasily. Some small noise to his left caught his attention. A pebble clattering against a larger stone, maybe.
Beedle glanced back at him with a question in his eyes. Link held a hand out to indicate he should stop, then got off the horse. There was a cluster of boulders to his left, just a little bit up the hill. Was there a Yiga spy hiding behind them? Link wouldn’t have been surprised.
He carefully picked his way up the hill, trying not to dislodge any dirt from the rocky hill. When he got to the cluster of boulders, he frowned. There was no one there. No sign that anything had been there recently. There was only the sound of the wind and Beedle fidgeting with his pack.
Now it sounded like papers were fluttering in the wind, Link realized absently half a moment before he heard a shout from behind him.
“For the bana – I mean, for the boss!”
Link spun around with a panicked shout and pulled out his demon carver, flailing his arm. The pommel of his demon carver smacked against a Yiga footsoldier’s mask.
The footsoldier flew sideways, skidding and rolling down the hill. Link jumped off the cluster of boulders before hitting the ground and rolling. He came up into a crouch and angled his demon carver at his attacker’s throat before he could teleport away.
“Agh, how dare you – “ the footsoldier spluttered. Link only frowned. His voice, while still masculine, was switching between very deep and nasally high-pitched at random intervals. He tried to wriggle away, but Link pinned his arm down with his free hand. If he looked closer, he could see a fine crack spreading across the Yiga mask. Was the mask…how they disguised themselves as average travelers? Or how they teleported?
Beedle appeared next to them without his pack. “I know your voice,” he said in disbelief, pointing an accusing finger at the Yiga. “I’ve been selling you arrows!”
Link felt the footsoldier’s arm tense under his hand, and snarled, “Don’t.”
The footsoldier’s gaze whipped from Link to Beedle and back again. “Woodland Stable was a trial run,” he hissed. “Watch your back, Champion.”
Anger boiled in his blood. He leaned in close. “If you so much as touch anyone at that stable,” he threatened, “I will gladly go to your hideout and destroy your new leader all over again.”
The footsoldier was quiet at that.
“Go tell your friends that I’m not at the stable anymore,” Link said. He stood up, and the footsoldier scrambled to his feet and ran up the road in the direction Link and Beedle had come from, disappearing from view.
He glanced back at Beedle. The traveling salesman was pale and stared at the spot where the Yiga had disappeared. “I can’t believe he tried to kill you – “
“Did you know he was Yiga?” Link demanded.
Beedle flinched. “No. And I don’t want to sell to them,” he added, a bit defensive. “I think a regular customer of mine at Kara Kara might be one of them. He buys way more arrows than any one guy needs. Just like you, huh?” he finished in an attempt at humor.
Link shook his head, disbelieving. “They’re killers.”
Beedle shrugged. “Well, everyone only thinks they’re crazy. Running around, telling people they want to kill the Hylian Champion, like he hasn’t been dead for a hundred years…”
Link clamped his mouth shut, miserable. He didn’t like being lumped in with the people trying to kill him. Come to think of it, he didn’t like being little more than a legend to the people of Hyrule. His life would be so much easier if everyone just knewhe was supposed to destroy the Calamity. Doing it all himself was overwhelming.
Beedle could not force another word out of him for the rest of the journey to the stable. If your words show weakness, perhaps it’s wisest not to speak at all. Who had said that to him? The phrase had the feel of a memory, the voice that spoke it faded and indistinct like a century-old painting. Link shook his head. Whoever had said it, the phrase had clearly done its job.
He didn’t realize they had reached the stable until a cold shadow fell over him. He glanced up, startled, only to see the building’s massive horse head looming above him. He hopped off the horse, dragging his hands over his face. He had to get it together. Poor Beedle probably had no idea what he’d done to make him so upset.
Better outlook, Link. This stable probably hadn’t been attacked by Yiga yet. It was surrounded by trees, so there was plentiful shade to beat the heat. No one here would be mad at him, except maybe Beedle.
Feeling a little bit better, he led Princess to a water trough and pulled out his own waterskin from a saddlebag. There was a man wearing a typical stable hat whacking away at a practice dummy only a few feet away from him. With a torch, no less.
“You mind?” Link muttered when the torch got dangerously close to Princess’ flank.
“I am Yolero, wielder of the legendary Master Torch,” the man said haughtily. “I do mind.”
“I think it’s a sword,” said Link with a heavy dose of irony.
Yolero stopped hitting the dummy and turned to Link with a frown. “What is?”
“You know. The Master Sword. The sword that seals the darkness. Blade of evil’s bane.” Link waved his hand vaguely. The sword I’m supposed to have. Damn the Koroks.
Yolero scoffed. “My grandmother always told me it was a torch.”
It’s only been a hundred years, Link thought with a strange mix of annoyance and sadness. Surely his grandmother would have remembered stories about the Hylian Champion more accurately…
Or maybe she had sanitized the stories for a young grandchild. Dinraal’s fire, was he just a children’s story now?
Link shook it off with an irritated huff. This was getting ridiculous. “You’re fast, but try to control your swings better,” he advised Yolero. “You’re leaving yourself wide open.”
Yolero blinked at the unsolicited advice, then thanked him hesitantly. Link only nodded, then went to go find Beedle.
He found himself standing before Beedle’s pack, scrambling around in his mind for the proper words to say. “I’m sorry,” he blurted out after an uncomfortable few seconds. Beedle shot him a quizzical glance.
“I’m sorry I just stopped talking to you earlier,” Link clarified, bringing a hand to the back of his head in embarrassment. “I…I’m not good at talking to people. And I don’t like the Yiga Clan.”
“I can tell,” Beedle said dryly. Link panicked for a moment at the stillness of his expression. Goddess, had he actually really hurt Beedle’s feelings?
Then Beedle’s face split into a smile. “Gotcha!” he hooted. “I know you’re bad at talking to people. Your strengths lay outside the realm of social interaction. That’s what I’m here for!” He winked.
Link breathed a sigh of relief and grinned. “In that case, can I buy some arrows? I have some more monster parts for you.”
Hylia bless Beedle. He was the one who deserved to be a legend.
And it wasn’t the end of the world that Beedle sold arrows to a guy who may or may not have been Yiga. Right? He had to remember the root problem. The Calamity.
This new pensive mood was how Link found himself seated on a crate at sunset, studying Hyrule Castle for the first time in a month. He did not shy away from taking in the crumbling spires and the magenta swirls of malice that choked the castle grounds, just as visible in the encroaching dusk as in broad daylight. This felt like progress, he thought, self-satisfied. Maybe next time he could forget about his disastrous last visit to the castle long enough to defeat the Calamity. He would have to.
Okay, Link. What’s step one?
Step one was to visit Gerudo Town. Riju would know more about what was happening with the Yiga.
Step two: infiltrate the Yiga Clan’s hideout. And maybe, if he was lucky, he could somehow… Well, he wasn’t sure exactly how he could stop them, at least temporarily, but he could figure it out.
Step three: protect the towns and stables. That… Link didn’t really have any idea how to do that.
Step four: Defeat the Calamity. That was the most daunting step of all.
Well. Step one was good enough for now.
Without sparing another look back at the stable, he got on Princess and galloped down the road.
It had been nice taking it easy earlier in the day, but he couldn’t deny that he loved the wind tearing through his hair and Princess’s mane, the steady rolling gait of his horse, and how the wilds scrolled by under the last traces of orange, pink and lavender in the evening sky.
The Lanayru Wetlands and their ruins passed by on his left, then soon enough he reached Eagus Bridge. He grinned, exulting in the thrill of riding fast. He almost felt like he and his horse were soaring across Hyrule Field. He would have to give extra apples to Princess when they stopped.
They skirted the Great Plateau, faint moonlight illuminating the sheer cliff face. Before long, Link was facing the Gerudo Highlands and their orange steppes turned silver by the nighttime. He was almost at the Digdogg Suspension Bridge.
As he came to the top of the gentle hill before the bridge, he slowed Princess to a halt and cursed. Some moblins had set up camp right next to the bridge, and although they were sleeping now, they would be woken up by a horse passing by. What was more, a red wizzrobe was prancing around above the burnt husk of a house nearby.
“Ugh,” Link muttered. He was not in the mood for fighting, but that wizzrobe would definitely wake the moblins if he tried to pass by. Maybe with a well-placed ice arrow and a bit of luck he could sneak past the moblins…
He swung himself off the stallion and took out his duplex bow. He pulled an ice arrow out of his quiver and kneeled in the grass. The wizzrobe was still busy looking like an idiot as Link inched his way closer. Finally, he had a semi-clear shot.
This first shot has to work. “No pressure,” he muttered to himself.
He pulled the string back and let his hand come to its comfortable anchor point against his jaw. Wizzrobes were stupid. Stupid, and annoying. If it would just stop moving for one Goddess-cursed second…
There. He aimed carefully and released. The wizzrobe shrieked and dissolved in a cloud of icy mist. Link ran back down the slope to Princess and vaulted on, hissing, “Let’s go.”
They galloped up the road. Moblins in the camp startled awake and went for their clubs, but they were too slow to catch him, even as they gave chase. “Ha, suckers!” Link shouted after them.
Then the moblins stopped. Link frowned at the sudden halt, then shrugged. He turned back around in the saddle.
He found himself about to collide with a recently awakened hinox.
“Shit!” Link yelped, yanking the reins to the side to get Princess out of the way. He scrambled off the horse while he tried to unsheathe his demon carver. The hinox just blinked at him. Then tried to sit on him.
Link barely threw himself out of the way. Gasping, he hacked at the monster’s leg a few times. He whirled out of the way as the hinox tried to swat at him, but now he was facing away from the hinox and he could see the water far below him. Some strange feeling was taking over, somehow familiar yet disorienting. There was something at the edge of his memory, with the hinox and the water, at the tip of his tongue –
It suddenly hit him like a ton of bricks. The moonlight gleaming off the Regencia River –
The moonlight gleaming off of Ralis Pond –
“There’s a hinox at Ralis Pond!” Bazz shouted.
Link squinted at the little Zora. “So?”
“So we should fight it!” Bazz pumped his fist in the air, and Rivan and Gaddison bounced around in excitement.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Link said, with all of the dignity and conviction he could muster from his young age.
Rivan shoved his way in front of Bazz with a pout. “Aw, why not, Link? You taught us how to fight!”
“I’m nine,” Link pointed out sagely.
“You beat that soldier in a fight yesterday,” Gaddison replied in a quiet voice.
“Only cause he didn’t try,” Link blustered, secretly pleased at the mention of his victory. “No one wants to beat up a kid.”
“Right, so that hinox won’t want to hit us!” Bazz shouted.
Link frowned. “Don’t think that’s how that works.”
“And how would you know, Mr. I’ve-never-seen-a-monster-in-real-life?” Rivan retorted, poking him in the back.
“Hey, ow,” Link muttered. “My dad is a knight and he fights monsters. Of course I would know.”
“Would not,” Bazz scoffed. “When do you even talk to him? You spend too much time with Kodah.”
“Do not,” Link snapped, just as Gaddison rolled her eyes.
“Link doesn’t even spend that much time with her,” she said. She was much less riled up than the other two Zoras. “You guys aren’t making sense. Boys are dumb.”
“Fight me, Gaddison!” Rivan was yelling, but Link was no longer invested in that conflict. He had just remembered that his father had told him to corral all the Zora kids back to their pools if it got late. And, judging by the fact that he could see the moon over the cliffs of Zora’s Domain, it was very late indeed.
“Aw, man,” Link groaned, head in his hands. “My dad’s going to kill me.”
When he looked up, the Zoras were gone. Link whirled around, heart pounding, scanning the waterways of the Domain. There, at the very end, he saw the three kids running off. “The Big Bad Bazz Brigade rides again!” Bazz yelled.
“No, you don’t, not without me!” Link shouted back, but it was too late. By the time he made it to the upper level of the Domain, he had lost them.
He cast his gaze around wildly. What would he do if they actually tried to fight the hinox? He didn’t have weapons! The Big Bad Bazz Brigade didn’t have weapons! His dad would kill him! He would never get to be a knight of Hyrule!
Completely at a loss, he brightened when he saw Kodah over by the inn. “Kodah, Kodah, Kodah!” he shouted, using up all of his breath.
The red-finned Zora turned to him, startled. “What’s wrong, Linny?”
Link couldn’t even spare the effort to be annoyed by the nickname. “Big Bad – Bazz Brigade? There’s a hinox – Ralis Pond – no swords – “ He bent over, hands on his knees, out of breath and a little bit panicky.
Kodah frowned. “I did see them run past, yelling like a lizalfos was chasing them. I hope they’re not trying to get into trouble.”
That was Kodah for you. Always the practical and mature one. Link was always privately worried that she would look down on him for hanging out with the little hooligans of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade, but she never did.
But now was not the time for thinking! “I’m more worried about myself!” Link called over his shoulder as he dashed for the bridge connecting the Domain with the cliffs surrounding it.
The gentle glow of the Domain’s luminous stones under moonlight usually mesmerized Link, but he was on a mission. The Brigade had a head start and an advantage, what with the water everywhere. He had gotten pretty good at splashing around in the almost two years his father had been stationed here, but he was no Zora.
Wait – there! Leaning up against the side of the bridge, in a little alcove next to a crate, was an abandoned silver sword. Link snatched it up, almost tripping over himself, and kept running. He ducked and weaved around the strange, luminescent plants growing on the cliff. His footsteps squelched in the grass, the morning’s rain doing its part to slow him down.
Ahead of him, next to a small pond, he could see a hinox getting to its feet and blinking blearily. Three small Zoras ran around it, dodging its line of sight.
Link’s heart jumped in his throat. Had he been that stupid when he was younger?
He was around twenty feet away from the hinox now. Before he knew what he was doing, he yelled, “Hey! Over here!”
The hinox’s gaze inched its way over to him. The hinox was very blue. And very, very big. Link swallowed.
The hinox took a great, lumbering step toward him. The earth shook when its foot hit the ground. Link held the silver sword before him, doing his best to ignore how the point of the sword wobbled.
The hinox raised an arm, and Link’s muscles tensed, ready to jump out of the way –
“Ya dumb monster! You’re as fat as King Dorephan!”
Link could only blink for a second. The hinox was just as confused, turning back around to face the source of the shout. Gaddison was smacking Rivan’s shoulder, exclaiming, “You can’t say that about the king! That’s mean!”
Then the hinox’s shadow fell over them, and their eyes widened. Bazz tried to pull them out of the way, but they were nearly trapped against a rock face.
Link let loose his best imitation of a battle cry and charged at the hinox. He slashed at the back of its legs, but now the hinox was turning and he was losing that good angle. He ducked under a swipe of its hand and stabbed right under its knee. The hinox howled in pain, a loud, monstrous sound that jarred Link right out of his focus. He didn’t realize the hinox was about to sit on him until a small Zora hand grabbed his and yanked him out of the way.
He stared in disbelief at the spot he had just been, now flattened by the hinox. “You’re welcome,” Gaddison squeaked, before beating a hasty retreat back to the bush the Big Bad Bazz Brigade was hiding behind.
Link ran forward again, able to slash at the monster while it was attempting to get back up. He noted with a fierce pride that he had done some serious damage to one of its legs.
He was interrupted again by a cry of, “Link!” coming from behind him.
Link whirled around on reflex to see a red-finned Zora with a gleaming trident sprinting right for the hinox. He watched in awe as Princess Mipha of the Zora gracefully launched herself into the air and drove the Lightscale Trident right into the hinox’s eye.
The hinox staggered back, clutching at its eye, but Mipha was too fast. She had wrenched the trident out of its eye and vaulted away before it could even come close to touching her. Thinking fast, Link hollered at the hinox, drawing its attention to him.
As it was distracted, Mipha sprinted around to the back of the hinox and, in a quick series of blows, brought it to its knees. With a final, decisive blow to the back of the neck, the hinox slumped forward, now motionless. Link watched thick, black blood ooze out of the hinox’s eye and legs, horrified and fascinated despite himself.
Mipha emerged from behind the monster’s corpse, somehow unscathed. She smiled. “Thank you for your help, Link.”
Link could not think of what to say for a second. Then he blurted, “Thank Gaddison! Gaddison saved me!”
“That’s right!” Rivan added from behind the bush. “She’s a real heroine!”
Mipha turned to where the members of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade were creeping out from behind the bush, matching sheepish and scared expressions on their faces. “Then I thank you for your help as well, Gaddison,” she said, that gentle smile still in her voice. How did Mipha manage to be so nice all the time? It was a complete mystery to Link, who was tired, sore, and cranky now that the adrenaline was leaving his system.
Then another set of running footsteps sounded behind him, heavier than Mipha’s. Link froze, pulse pounding. He recognized those footsteps.
He slowly turned around and came face to face with his father.
He was still wearing his knight’s armor, although his helmet was tucked under his arm. The expression on his face scared Link. It was a cross between anger, impatience, and fear that he had never seen before. “Link,” he began gravely.
Link bowed his head, terrified of the inevitable lecture he was going to get. “I’m sorry, dad, I – “
“You know that all of you need to stay together in the Domain when I’m in meetings with the Zora guard. I was specific about what time I expected you and your friends to be in bed by, wasn’t I?” His father sounded more tired than anything else.
“Sunset,” Link managed, willing the shameful tears away from his eyes. It was all his fault…
Bazz crept forward into Link’s peripheral vision, startling him. “I’m sorry, sir, it’s all my fault! I wanted to fight the hinox, and I’m the leader of the Brigade, so they all listened to me…”
Link’s head jerked up in surprise at Bazz’s defense. For some reason, faint amusement flickered in his father’s eyes for a moment, then it was eclipsed by the old, tired anger. “Just be grateful that Princess Mipha was here to save your sorry behinds.” He turned to her and bowed. “I can’t thank you enough, Highness.”
Mipha smiled, bringing the tip of her trident down to the ground in a relaxed stance. “If you would like, Sir Rossin, you may return to your meeting. I can bring the children back.”
After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded, sending Link one last reproachful glance. Then he turned and jogged back to the Domain.
Link watched his shiny armor dwindle into the distance, miserable. To his surprise, Mipha laid a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry,” she said. “Kodah came to find me as soon as you left. I explained to your father that you were only trying to save them. He won’t be angry for long.”
“Thank you, Princess,” he said glumly, unable to feel very optimistic about that.
“It’s all our fault, Princess!” Rivan yelled, Bazz and Gaddison looking suitably regretful behind him. “We thought we could fight it, but then Link did all the work!”
“Link did all the work?” Mipha echoed with a surprising amount of indignation. “But I killed the beast!”
“It was mostly Princess Mipha,” Link admitted, not even ashamed to say it in the face of her extraordinary prowess with the Lightscale Trident.
As the laughter of the Zora princess and children rose into the night, Link made a private resolution.
If his dad ever let him become a knight, he would train with both the sword and the spear.
He blinked, and he was facing the Regencia River again. The world was covered in a haze of red, and Link was briefly terrified – had he somehow miscounted the days? Was it already the blood moon again? – but then he realized what was happening.
Daruk was back! Link turned around to see the Goron’s ethereal, red form holding up the barrier. “Welcome back, little guy!” Daruk exclaimed, but Link didn’t miss the trace of worry in his voice.
“Sorry, I don’t know what got into me – “ Link babbled. He must have instinctively summoned the barrier while he was zoned out.
“It’s alright, I just took a few hits – “ Daruk pushed his arms out with a grunt, countering the hinox’s strike and leaving the monster off-balance and reeling. Daruk and his barrier fizzled out as he expended the last of the energy keeping him with Link.
Link did not waste the opportunity to dart around the hinox. But he was still reeling from the memory – Bazz, Mipha, his father – and he somehow found himself trapped between the edge of the natural platform and the hinox.
Then something hit his side with the force of a flying, massive boulder, and the world spun around him. He landed with a bone-jarring thud that forced the breath out of his lungs.
Everything went black.
Then he opened his eyes, crying out in pain, and saw Mipha. Everything came back to him in a rush. The hinox, the memory–
He ignored the pain seizing his chest and propped himself up on one arm. Mipha frowned, but he blurted, “I remember!”
Mipha’s hand hovered above his chest, confusion warring with faint hope in her eyes. “What do you remember?”
“I remember, Mipha!” He felt his face break into a broad grin. “That time Bazz, Rivan, and Gaddison wanted to fight a hinox and I chased them and you saved our lives – “ A sharp twinge in his side cut him off, but it couldn’t put a damper on his excitement or the joy that was slowly spreading across Mipha’s face.
“Then why are you having a harder time beating a hinox now than when you were nine years old?” she teased. “Come on. I believe in you.”
Link laughed, half in disbelief and half in delight. “I’m so happy, Mipha – “
Her form had faded and vanished, but Link’s joy did not go away. He jumped to his feet and charged at the hinox, roaring a battle cry. He remembered! He remembered something about his father, about his childhood friends, about his dear friend and fellow Champion Mipha.
Link hardly noticed when the steel of the demon carver fractured and splintered against the tough hide of the hinox, or when his arrow pierced the monster’s eye, or when it finally died and dissipated in a swirl of magenta smoke. The hinox had been carrying a royal broadsword around its neck, and Link picked it up to replace the demon carver he had lost. Not even the remarkably foul-smelling blood and guts of the hinox could bring him down.
He had been so convinced for so long that all he would ever have of his past life were scattered fragments, diaries, and hearsay. An uncomfortable proportion of his memories involved Princess Zelda being rude to him. He had given up on anything more, much less anything more revealing.
And now his father had a face and a name. Sir Rossin. A tall, broad, dark-haired man with intense blue eyes and a nose slightly crooked from where it had been broken before. Link could only assume he took more after his mother.
And maybe he would remember his mother soon! He had no idea why he had begun to remember now, but he wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Poor Princess was still huddled by the edge of the bridge, tossing his head nervously. “It’s okay, horse,” Link laughed as he patted his nose and pulled an apple out of a saddlebag.
Soon enough, they were back on the road, flying through Gerudo Canyon. Link hadn’t felt this optimistic in ages.

Healthcare Quotes!
(dark humor)
Four: My patient really needs a liver transplant. I want tonight to be the night he gets it. Legend: What’s your blood type? Four, rolling his eyes: Not my liver. I want to see him recover and all! Sky: That would be the fastest way to procure it, though. The ultimate sacrifice for your patient. Truly being a patient advocate. Legend: Let us know when you off yourself and we’ll give it like six minutes so you can be properly brain dead and all. Four, huffing: How about Warriors? He’s strong, healthy— Sky: Nah, he drinks too much, you don’t want his liver. Wars: >:O I DO NOT Legend: *wheezing*
…
Mo: *coughing* Hyrule: You good? Mo: I’m dying Aurora: None of that crap until the shift is over, we’ve had enough call outs tonight! Mo, sadly: Aw man
…
Warriors: *exiting a patient’s room laughing* Legend: What’s so funny? Wars: This dude has the absolute best insults ever. Legend: Who was he insulting? Wars: Me, because he didn’t get his water fast enough, but man was it amazing. Legend, interested now: So what did he call you?? Warriors, smirking evilly: You’ll never know. Legend: Wha—YOU CANT LEAD ME ON AND THEN LEAVE ME HANGING LIKE THAT
…
Twilight, staring into the void: Ilia: What’s wrong? Twi: The girl in 15 said I couldn’t play with her ponies because I wasn’t cool enough. Ilia, biting back laughter: That’s rough, buddy
…
Wild: This one teenager I was transporting to MRI said I was so bad at directions I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag. Twilight: She ain’t wrong. Wind: Did you say anything back? Wild: I said “Actually I can, animal control tried to use a bag to catch me and I found my way out of it just fine.” Twi, sighing: I can believe it
…
Time, stopping a surgical resident from doing something: That is what we call an artery. When I said don’t kill the patient, I meant don’t kill the patient. Since you were about to cut the artery, I think we need a lesson really quickly on what does and does not kill a patient. Time: For example. Bleeding to death leads to dying. I know this might be hard for you to understand but— Malon: *narrows eyes, raises eyebrow* Time:…But I understand you’re still learning.
…
Fable: Yeah, so she was supposed to get a mini-MVR, they perfed her LV, then they fixed that and her papillary muscles tore, then they tried to fix that and she got a VSD, so they just put her on ECMO and balloon pump and shipped her to us. Wild: What does—what?? Time: Her heart woke up and chose violence. Or her surgeon did, I’m not sure which.

For the sickfic, what about Time and 6?
MwuahahahaHAHAHA someone took the bait YES
Y'all are about to find out about the Wild Card of Healthcare.
(Click here to read on AO3)
Warriors was the first to notice.
Approaching their leader, he asked, “Are you alright?”
Time grimaced, rubbing his flank. “Yes. Just some back pain, nothing to worry about.”
Wind gasped, his eyes wide. “Wow, you really are old.”
Four choked on his water, nearly dropping his flask, as Time smiled good naturedly, ruffling Wind’s hair. “I can still manage despite my centuries, Sailor. Let’s keep moving.”
Twilight was the next one to notice.
While patrolling in his wolf form, he could sense it, he could smell the change. Each member of the group had a distinct scent, and fluctuations in them usually gave him an inkling as to what was going on. A touch of iron indicated a probable wound, a shift in composition of sweat and breath heralded an oncoming disaster, such as when Sky had collapsed in convulsions from what he later described as Surface Sickness (and had apologized for scaring them, reluctantly admitting it was preventable if he just slowed down after being in higher altitudes for a while). So when he was patrolling and something about Time smelled different, he shifted into his Hylian form and approached his ancestor.
“Are you feeling okay?” Twilight asked softly to respect the man’s privacy. The entire group didn’t need to know if he didn’t want them to.
Rubbing his abdomen mildly, Time shrugged. “I’m fine, Rancher. Probably drank too much water.”
It was hard to drink too much water, but Twilight uneasily supposed it wasn’t impossible. Still, he didn’t like it. “Are you sure? Something’s not right.”
Time grew more serious. “What do you mean? You sense trouble in the area?”
“No, no, not like that,” Twilight said dismissively. “I mean with you.”
“I promise I’m alright,” Time said reassuringly with some affection in his tone. He put a hand on his shoulder and smiled before moving on to the front of the group.
Sky was the third to notice.
Time was being slow. He was never slow. Methodical, even paced, yes. But dragging behind like Sky would? Absolutely not.
Hovering close, but far enough to not annoy the man, Sky asked hesitantly, “Are you okay?”
Time made a motion as if he were going to reply when he suddenly remained silent. He furrowed his brow, clearing his throat, and then shook his head, rubbing his eyes tiredly. He waved Sky away carelessly, walking ahead. The Skyloftian took a hesitant step forward to follow, but he decided it would probably be better if the nagging came from someone closer to the elder. He glanced at Wild, Twilight, Wind, and Warriors, waiting to see if any of them would comment. Wind was oblivious, talking happily with Four, who was laughing, and Legend, who was listening with a small smile. Twilight and Wild were at the front, the former reeling the latter in from running off to chase some wild game.
That left Warriors.
The captain was also at the front, eyes alert for danger, not seeming to notice their leader dragging his feet towards the middle of the group.
Hyrule leaned in beside Sky. “Is the Old Man alright?”
Sky sighed. “If he’s anything like us, probably not.”
Hyrule gazed at him a moment, discerning his meaning, and then he chuckled.
After that, it didn’t matter who was observing and who wasn’t. Everyone noticed.
Time was sick. And he wasn’t talking. He was barely eating. His face was glistening with sweat.
It had become apparent that night when they’d settled and made camp, but everyone had left it alone to see if some sleep would help.
It didn’t.
“Okay, that’s enough,” the captain said as he approached Time, who was fiddling with his belongings the next morning. “Get back under the cover and get some sleep. We’ll bring you some food and water.”
Time seemed to ignore him, slowly pulling out his ocarina with trembling hands. The captain shifted his weight, and his demeanor de-escalated from commanding to concerned. He crouched down beside their leader, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Sprite,” he said softly. “Come on, just lie down.”
Time paused at the touch, and then put the ocarina to his mouth. Warriors sighed in annoyance but didn’t do anything, letting him waste time for a little bit.
He played a brief, cheery little tune, confusing the group but also making them relax a little. Surely he couldn’t feel too bad if—
Thunder rumbled.
“What the—where did this storm come from?” Wild muttered, pulling out his slate. They were in his Hyrule, after all.
Legend shivered a little, huddling subconsciously towards Hyrule and Sky. Meanwhile, Time sighed, leaning against a tree and closing his eyes, looking a little relieved.
Warriors hesitated in trying to get him to lie down, but at least he was resting, so he let it go. Twilight corralled everyone into the cover of the trees, quickly gathering their supplies and weapons.
“The slate just says it’s going to storm for hours,” Wild said, reading his Sheikah item, bewildered. “I swear, it said it was going to be sunny today.”
“Hours?” Legend repeated, glancing out as lightning tore across the sky.
“Well, great,” Wind huffed. “This is going to be a miserable day for camping.”
“Good for hunting, though,” Wild noted. “The rain will cover our footsteps.”
“Champion, we’ve got plenty of food,” Twilight said exasperatedly.
Four looked around. “Uh, where’s the Old Man?”
Everyone whirled, facing the spot where Time had been sitting, to see nothing there.
Swearing, Warriors looked around and saw their leader stumbling through the open field, getting soaked by the rain. He stormed out after him. “What are you doing, get back here.”
Time ignored him, continuing ahead, his sword and shield on his back, even though he wasn’t wearing any of his armor.
“Why is he acting like this, anyway? It’s not like him,” Wind asked worriedly.
“Could be the fever,” Hyrule suggested. “I’ve gotten fevers and woken up in different places and couldn’t explain it sometimes. I’ve gotten in the habit of going to villages or hiding deep in caves that I’ve cleared out when I get sick because of it.”
Everyone stared at the traveler. Legend remarked, “You do know that fevers aren’t supposed to make you that delirious, right? Like if you got to that point you were really sick.”
Hyrule shrugged sheepishly. Legend groaned and buried his face in his hand.
“So he’s really sick, then?” Wind continued, looking back at Time as Warriors finally caught up to him.
Twilight put a hand on the youngest Link’s shoulder. “Maybe he’s just…”
Everyone stared at the rancher as he fumbled for a logical explanation, and then he sighed and shook his head. “Yeah, he probably is. But we’ll take care of him.”
No one could hear what the captain was shouting at Time over the pouring rain, but they could all see very clearly as he put his hand on their leader to stop him.
And they watched as Time smacked Warriors’ hand away aggressively.
Uneasiness filled the air. Everyone tensed, waiting to see what was going to happen next. Warriors was usually pretty good at de-escalating situations.
Today, however, did not fall into the usually category, as Time drew his sword all of a sudden.
“Holy shit, what the hell is he doing?!” Legend hissed as Hyrule sprang into action.
Warriors took hasty steps back, caught off guard, as Time glared fiercely at him. “Easy, Old Man, it’s me!”
Holding his hands up in a surrendering posture, Warriors maintained distance between himself and Time, trying to get him to come to his senses.
And then Hyrule came darting into view.
“Traveler, wait—!” Warriors yelled.
Time flinched at the noise and his attention immediately shot to Hyrule. Taking a large step forward, forcing Warriors to nearly fall over to move out of his path, Time swiped his sword horizontally, its length able to reach Hyrule and split his abdomen open. The traveler took a deep breath and leapt high into the air.
At this point, Twilight joined the fray, dissolving into shadow and rushing ahead as a wolf to cover more ground quickly. Sky pulled out his whip and grabbed Warriors’ shield, running towards the captain.
Hyrule came falling out of the sky, ready to land on Time and knock him down for the count, but the elder held up his shield to bash the teenager as he landed. Time side stepped to avoid crashing into Hyrule, who grunted as the shield swiped hard at his legs as he helplessly got swatted to the ground, unable to dodge midair. The traveler landed on his side in the mud, curling in as the wind got knocked out of him.
Time held his sword overhead in a finishing blow, and Warriors cried out, trying to reach the pair. Instead, Twilight got their first, snarling and leaping onto Time’s chest, knocking him flat on his back. Then the wolf whined, laying down on the elder to pin him to the ground and peeling his ears back.
Sky reached Warriors and handed him his shield just as Hyrule slowly rose, rubbing his legs with a wince. Sky slid to the ground beside the traveler. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” Hyrule grunted. “Just bruised.”
Time’s left hand scrambled for his sword, which was lying on the ground beside him, and Sky immediately drew the whip back and let it fly. It smacked the elder’s hand, and he flinched back with a hiss. Warriors quickly scurried over to grab the sword. Seeing the captain coming, Time rolled to his side, managing to counteract Twilight’s weight and knocking the wolf onto his side, pinning his four legs under Time’s torso. Twilight yelped.
“That’s it!” Wild yelled from the tree line, grabbing his bow and arrows. “This needs to stop!”
“Are you crazy, what are you doing?!” Four shouted, reaching for Wild’s arms.
“He’s right!” Wind agreed, grabbing his own weapons. “We can’t just let him hurt everybody!”
“Great,” Legend moaned, also arming himself. “This is just great. Don’t freaking kill anybody, got it?”
“Relax, I got this,” Wild said quietly as he nocked an arrow, focusing.
Meanwhile, Warriors kicked away the sword just as Time lunged for it over Twilight. The eldest Link’s hand instead snaked around the captain’s ankle and he pulled hard, making the captain stumble and lose his balance. An arrow flew through the air, pinning Time’s sleeve to the ground, but the soil was too loose from moisture, and he easily broke free.
Sky used the whip again, snapping at Time’s hand. The man yelled out, turning his attention to Sky with a furious look.
Shadows shifted around Time, and Twilight was suddenly curled into him, his arm and leg still pinned by the elder, but his left hand was free to punch the man right in the jaw.
“Snap out of it!” Twilight yelled.
Time’s face lowered once more to glare at the rancher, both eyes open. Twilight felt a chill run down his spine at the sight of the man’s blank right eye boring into him.
And then their leader relaxed, his expression shifting to concern.
Another arrow came out of nowhere and landed just beside Time’s head, and ice crystals began to spread from it an alarming rate. Time jumped, startled, and Twilight shoved him over so it wouldn’t hurt either of them. The eldest Link’s arm snaked around Twilight in an instant, pinning the rancher to his chest, and he sat up, grabbing his shield with his other arm.
“For Farore’s sake, will you stop being stupid?!” Legend yelled as he approached with Wind and Four. “It’s us, dipshit!”
“Old Man, stop it!” Twilight said, smacking the man on the collarbone. “There are no threats here!”
The blow made Time flinch, and he coughed, wincing. Hyrule and Sky grabbed Twilight under the arms and pulled him off their leader, and everyone hastily scurried a few paces back to wait and see what would happen next.
Groaning, Time held his side and slowly dragged himself into a seated position. He was gasping for air, and despite the poor lighting from the overcast and the rain, it was clear he was far, far too pale.
“Either we’re going to accidentally kill him or he’s going to kill himself from fighting,” Warriors hissed and then faced the others. “We need to finish this!”
“I’m open to suggestions that don’t involve clobbering him!” Legend snapped.
In the time they were arguing, Time lunged forward, his shield firmly gripped in his hand as he got within reach of Sky. Before anyone could react, Hyrule outflanked him and smacked him right across the skull with his own shield. Time collapsed in a heartbeat, out cold.
“Traveler, what the hell?!” Four shouted frantically, running to Time’s side. “You could have been a little gentler!”
Hyrule shriveled a little at the rebuke, but he still had fire in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to let him hurt Sky.”
Wind sank to his knees, the mud squelching beneath him. “What the fuck.”
At his words, the shock of what just happened started rippling through everyone, but Warriors shook it off. “We have to get him to a healer.”
“Yeah, since now he’s sick and injured,” Legend grumbled.
Sky put a hand on Hyrule’s shoulder, giving him a squeeze and a thankful smile, and then he rose and said, “So where should we go?”
Wild charged towards the group. “Is he okay?”
“For now,” Warriors answered. “Champion, this is your land. Where can we go to get him treatment?”
Thunder rumbled overhead, drowning out whatever noise Wild made as he considered it. Legend flinched.
“Before we’re struck by lightning, if you please,” the veteran added, the fire dying out of him quickly.
“Well, there is a stable nearby,” Wild considered. “But they don’t have much in terms of medical supplies. Zora’s Domain is half a day’s journey from here. They’re our best bet; not to mention they’ve got the best healers in Hyrule.”
“Half a day?” Wind repeated worriedly. “Is that going to be okay?”
“We don’t have a choice,” Warriors responded, crossing his arms.
Wild looked up at the clouds nervously. “Well, we should get out of this storm quickly. It’s a miracle none of us have been struck yet.”
“Struck?” Legend squeaked.
Wild nodded somberly. “Yeah. Happens a lot. I learned the hard way.”
Twilight, who had hovered at Time’s side alongside Four, sighed and pulled out his whistle. Epona came with haste, though she was clearly nervous from the weather.
“How are we going to get him up there?” Sky asked hesitantly. Time was not a small man, after all.
Legend smacked his palms together. “Relax, I got it.”
Pulling out his golden mitts, Legend easily picked up their leader, though he struggled at the sheer bulk of the man. Twilight hastily stepped forward to help, and together the two quickly got him situated on Epona. When he started to slide off the saddle, Four leapt in behind him, grabbing him around the waist.
At Twilight’s raised questioning eyebrow, Four snapped, “Well I don’t think Epona would appreciate carrying the Old Man and you, Rancher.”
“So what you’re saying is you’re tiny,” Wild snickered.
Four rolled his eyes, grumbling.
Getting in front of Epona, Twilight guided her since Four had no way of reaching around Time to get to the reins. Then he looked at Wild, who hastily took the lead.
Wind gasped. “Wait, our stuff!”
Warriors swore under his breath. “I’ll get everything.”
“I’ll help,” Sky quickly offered.
“Come on, let’s get going,” Legend interjected, shoving Wild forward. “We can’t linger out here.”
“We’ll catch up, Champion, don’t worry,” Warriors assured Wild, agreeing with Legend. “Lead on.”
As the captain and the knight rushed back to the trees where their discarded items remained, Wild started to walk ahead. He paused a moment, however, and looked at Twilight. “Rancher… you should go ahead. You think you can make it to the Domain if I give you directions? It would be best if they got notice before we arrive.”
Twilight nodded. “Good idea. Tell me where to go.”
“You shouldn’t go alone!” Four said worriedly, peeking around Time’s back.
Twilight smiled. “I’ll be alright, don’t worry, Smithy. Besides, you should all stay with the Old Man. He’ll need protecting.”
“From monsters, or himself?” Legend muttered.
Wind was ringing his hands nervously, and Hyrule looked away, eyes alert for danger.
It only took a minute or so for Twilight to be on his way, running at full speed as a wolf. The storm would hopefully keep most travelers off the road, allowing him to take the shortest and safest path. Not long after he’d departed, Sky and Warriors caught up with the rest of the group. Everyone’s weapons and metal objects were stored away, and they were on the move in no time.
The journey was blessedly uneventful, aside from the storm soaking everyone to the bone. The group walked with haste but in silence, too shaken up from what had happened and what might yet come. Halfway through the journey Four had to admit defeat at trying to keep Time situated on the saddle while unconscious, having been doing it for hours. Wind swapped out with him happily, and Four dragged his feet for a little bit, clearly worn out, until Warriors offered to carry him on his back. It was a testament to his exhaustion and stress from the day that he agreed without much argument.
The final leg of the journey was the most treacherous. Sky and Hyrule prowled ahead while Legend and Warriors watched the rear. A few monsters got in their way, but the rain helped them maintain a small semblance of stealth and sneak up on most of their enemies before they had any time to really engage.
By the time the group reached the Domain, Twilight was at the entrance in his Hylian form, awaiting their arrival alongside several Zora guards. The guards quickly assisted them with carrying Time off Epona and into the inn where a healer was waiting. Twilight happily reunited with his steed, thanking her for carrying his elder, and then checked on the others.
Despite there being space at the inn, the majority of the heroes were too worked up to settle or check on Time, knowing they’d just get in the way of the healer. They split into smaller groups and wandered. Legend, Warriors, and Four ventured into the local shop, busying themselves with resupplying for the team. Sky and Hyrule wandered to a tower in the periphery of the city, avoiding other Zoras and Hylians alike. Wind paced the entire domain so much that Wild was certain he was going to wear the soles off his boots, so he took the youngest Link to read the historical texts carved into stone near the sleeping ponds in the Domain. Twilight hovered by the cooking pot just outside the inn, unable to take his eyes off the healer as she worked.
Eventually, the storm system that had roared through finally started to settle. The band of heroes slowly meandered towards the inn, looking at Twilight for an update. Everyone was exhausted at this point and mostly beyond words.
Twilight gave a small smile. “Healer said he’ll be fine. He’s already woken up once for them, just out of it.”
As Twilight gave them the full report, Warriors wandered in first, standing over their leader and watching him silently.
Time shifted, sensing someone nearby, and slowly opened his left eye with a small moan. His head was killing him, as were his abdomen and chest. His taste buds weren’t exactly thrilled with that awful potion he’d been given, either, but that was clearly the least of his worries.
Looking around, he caught sight of the other heroes with whom he’d been traveling. They surrounded his bed, some farther away than others, and they all had a strange hesitation and timidity in their eyes.
Trying to reassure them, Time gave a small smile, sitting up a little. “There’s no need to look so forlorn, the healer already said I’d be fine.”
Palpable relief washed through the room, and everyone sighed heavily.
Satisfied, Time rubbed a tired hand over his face, shifting his focus to figuring out how in the world he ended up here. The last thing he really remembered was playing the Song of Storms to bring some cool rain in the hopes that it would help with how much he was burning up. At the time, to his addled brain, it had seemed a good idea. But they’d been in a forest when that had happened. What… ah, wait, there was something else. Something had happened… a monster horde? Some sort of threat, he knew that much. Something hadn’t felt right, and…
Time’s eye settled on the boys once more, really looking. They were all soaking wet and shivering. Hyrule, Twilight, and Warriors were covered in mud, and the traveler’s face was slightly scuffed up with small cuts. Every single one of his boys looked utterly exhausted.
Time’s chest clenched. He had a bad feeling about this. “What happened?”
Everyone shifted, looking at each other awkwardly. Time’s gaze settled on the captain, knowing he wouldn’t lie to him. Warriors sighed heavily, brushing his usually pristine hair out of his face, still dripping wet from the rain Time heard outside. “You were a little out of it, Old Man. You, uh, thought there was danger.”
Time felt his blood run cold as the truth of the matter settled heavily in his stomach. “I didn’t…”
“Yeah. You did.” Legend said flatly, crossing his arms. “You should be thankful. Traveler ended things quickly and all you got out of it was a lump on the head.”
“And a broken rib,” Four added helpfully.
“Yeah, but that was Rancher, not Traveler,” Wind noted.
Twilight bit his lip, looking at the floor.
Time didn’t know what to say. Logically, he knew that it wasn’t his fault. He’d been very ill. But he could have noticed earlier that he was sick and gotten better treatment for it. It was just that… well, it hadn’t seemed that bad. He’d honestly not really known what was wrong with himself. It wasn’t until he suddenly couldn’t speak that he’d grown worried, but by then it was too late. The confusion had settled in alongside the raging fever, and Time had lost all sense of lucidity.
Sky, reading the room as he always did, motioned to the others. “Come on. He needs to rest.”
One by one they filed out until only Warriors, Wind, Hyrule, and Twilight remained.
Hyrule hung his head a little. “I’m… sorry I hurt you.”
Time gave him his most convincing smile, filled with pride but also shame. “Don’t be. You ensured no one else was injured. I'm sorry I put all of you in that situation in the first place.”
Hyrule gave a small nod of acknowledgement and then shuffled out, and Wind immediately filled the space he’d left, eyes wide.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked nervously.
Time’s heart clenched again. He felt far worse than he had before. He couldn’t believe he’d caused his boys so much pain. Swallowing, he said softly, “I promise I’m okay, Sailor.”
Warriors put a hand on the boy’s shoulder in reassurance and gave Time a small smile. “Rest up, Old Man. And hey…” here the captain locked eyes with Time, giving him a firm look that brooked no argument. “Don’t blame yourself. We know it wasn’t your fault.”
The captain didn’t give Time any moment to respond or argue the fact, guiding Wind out of the area.
That left Twilight.
Glancing at his descendant, Time saw a mixture of emotions going through the young man’s eyes. Guilt, shame, fear, relief. Time felt his shoulders droop at the sight of it. Of all the boys in the group, Twilight was the most likely to blame himself, the least likely to talk about it, and the last person Time wanted to put in this position.
Twilight took a deep breath, steeling himself. Time waited for whatever he had to say, unable to speak first.
“Did you know you were getting sick?” he asked.
Time lowered his head in shame. “I noticed, but I… wasn’t convinced it was serious until it was too late.”
There was a heavy silence that filled the room, and then Time glanced up at Twilight, saying, “I’m sorry I put you through that. All of you.”
Twilight moved as if to put a hand on Time’s shoulder, but he stopped himself. Time’s heart clenched at the sight of it. He knew everyone was likely going to be walking eggshells around him for the next couple of days. He’d have to make up for his mistake to them.
“So, the next time I say something’s wrong with you…” Twilight said firmly, trailing off with his arms crossed, waiting for an answer.
Time sighed heavily. “I’ll listen to you.”
Twilight nodded, swallowing, and hesitated again. Time shifted over in the bed, pulling the cover down and patting the mattress. The slowness in Twilight's movements betrayed his anxiety, and it took a very considerable effort on Time's part to not shrivel into oblivion right there.
Goddesses, he felt awful.
Twilight sat beside the eldest Link, and Time gently pulled him into a hug. The rancher was stiff initially, but he eventually relented and settled into the hold.
"You need to sleep," Twilight muttered into Time's tunic, trembling.
"I will," Time said, settling back on the bed and pulling Twilight down with him. "You need to as well."
Twilight said nothing, conceding the fact, and exhaled heavily as if releasing a burden he'd been carrying. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep.
It took even less time for the others to sneak back in, one by one, until Time was surrounded in the bed.
Sky and Warriors were the last to reenter, hovering in the doorway, their eyes glittering in the dark.
Time smiled at them. "I'm sure you can find someplace if the others will make room."
With Wind snuggled securely in one arm, Twilight in the other, Hyrule using his ankles as a pillow, Wild pressing his back against his legs on one side while Four did so on the other, and Legend slumped in a chair with his torso laid out on the bed and his hand gripping the elder's tunic, it would definitely be interesting for them to find space. But Time wanted to reassure them as much as the others.
Sky looked longingly at the bed and then shook his head, backing away as Warriors chuckled.
"We'll be alright, Sprite," the captain said softly. "Get some sleep."
Time felt the vestiges of his hurt from earlier sting like a needle poking into his heart, but he didn't show it. "Very well. But I'm getting you two tomorrow."
Sky and Warriors' faces warmed at that, and the two bade him a good night.
Drinking in the sight of the boys around him, Time settled and fell asleep.
