Vivo India remitted Rs 62,476 crore abroad, almost 50% to China: ED

A day after it was reported that two top executives of its associated company likely fled India, following raids, the ED on Thursday said that Chinese smartphone company Vivo was involved in huge 'hawala' transactions. It said that out of the total sale proceeds of Rs 1,25,185 crore, Vivo India remitted Rs 62,476 crore -- almost 50 per cent of the turnover out of India, mainly to China. A senior ED official said that they carried out searches at 48 locations across the country belonging to Vivo Mobiles India Private Ltd and its 23 associated companies such as Grand Prospect International Communication Pvt Ltd (GPICPL), and so far, 119 bank accounts of various entities with gross balance to the tune of Rs 465 crore, including FDs to the tune of 66 crore, of Vivo India, 2 kg gold bars, and cash amounting to approximately Rs 73 lakh has been seized under the provisions of the PMLA. According to the ED, all due procedures as per law were followed during the said operations at each premises but employees of Vivo India, including some Chinese nationals did not cooperate with the search proceedings and had tried to abscond, remove and hide digital devices which were retrieved by the search teams. Vivo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd was incorporated on August 1, 2014 as a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Multi Accord Ltd, and was registered at ROC Delhi. The GPICPL was registered on December 3, 2014 at ROC Shimla, with registered addresses of Solan, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. The said company was incorporated by Zhengshen Ou, Bin Lou and Zhang Jie with the help of chartered accountant Nitin Garg. Lou left India on April 26, 2018 whereas Ou and Jie left India in 2021. In February this year, the ED initiated a Prevention of Money Laundering case against them on the basis of an FIR lodged at Delhi's Kalkaji police station under sections 417, 120B and 420 of IPC against GPICPL and its Director, shareholders and certifying professionals etc on the basis of complaint filed by Ministry of Corporate Affairs. As per the FIR, GPICPL and its shareholders had used forged identification documents and falsified addresses at the time of incorporation. The allegations were found to be true as the investigation revealed that the addresses mentioned by the directors of GPICPL did not belong to them, but in fact it was a government building and house of a senior bureaucrat. The ED's investigation revealed that the same director of GPICPL, Lou, was also an ex-director of Vivo. He had incorporated multiple companies across the country spread across various states. A total of 18 companies were set up around the same time, just after the incorporation of Vivo in 2014-15, while another Chinese national Zhixin Wei had incorporated further 4 companies. These entities include Rui Chuang Technologies Private Ltd (Ahmedabad), V Dream Technology & Communication Private Ltd (Hyderabad), Regenvo Mobile Private Ltd (Lucknow), Fangs Technology Private Ltd (Chennai), Weiwo Communication Private Ltd (Bengaluru), Bubugao Communication Private Ltd (Jaipur), Haicheng Mobile (India) Private Ltd (New Delhi), Joinmay Mumbai Electronics Private Ltd (Mumbai), Yingjia Communication Private Ltd (Kolkata), Jie Lian Mobile India Private Ltd (Indore), Vigour Mobile India Private Ltd (Gurugram), Hisoa Electronic Private Ltd (Pune), Haijin Trade India Private Ltd (Kochi), Rongsheng Mobile India Private Ltd (Guwahati), Morefun Communication Private Ltd (Patna), and several others, the ED said. These companies were found to have transferred huge amounts of funds to Vivo India, which remitted them out of India, mainly to China. HYDERABAD: On the last day of campaigning for the Dubbak assembly bypoll, Hyderabad Police seized Rs 1 crore unaccounted cash from the brother-in-law of BJP’s contesting candidate M Raghunandan Rao in Begumpet on Sunday. While police alleged the cash was meant to be distributed among voters ahead of the November 3 bypoll in Dubbak, the BJP denied the allegation, terming it as TRS’ ploy to derail the party. Sunday’s seizure comes six days after police seized Rs 18.67 lakh from another relative of Raghunandan Rao in Siddipet. Rao’s brother-in-law S Srinivas Rao and his driver T Ravi Kumar were caught with Rs 1 crore cash near Begumpet flyover while Srinivas was transporting the money. The duo was taken into custody and their vehicle and two mobile phones seized, officials said.

Two persons were arrested for allegedly conning people on the pretext of selling antique gold coins and gold idols. The police seized an idol, copper coins, gold-plated coins, Rs 9 lakh in cash and mobile phones from them. According to the police, Arjun Singh alias Diwakar (35) and Mohd Kallu (34) — both residents of Chatrinaka and natives of Uttar Pradesh – cheated buyers by selling them copper coins in the name of gold coins. City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said the duo procured copper coins, a few gold coins and an idol of Lord Mahavir Jain from Agra and brought it to the city. They took the coins to a businessman, Sanjeeva Chary, at Amberpet and said they found the ancient coins in a field in Uttar Pradesh and intended to sell it. To convince him, Kallu gave him a gold coin and collected Rs 2 lakh as advance and promised to bring another 380 coins. “The deal was struck for Rs 13.45 lakh and on August 28, the duo brought the gold-plated copper coins and handed over to him,” Anjani Kumar said, adding that Chary later realised that he was duped and approached the Amberpet police. After duping Chary, the duo convinced another person to purchase an ‘antique’ Mahavir Jain gold idol weighing 5 kg for Rs 40,000. Acting on a tipoff, the police caught them from Alpha Hotel in Secunderabad.   TV9 “chairman, CEO and editor” Ravi Prakash, who was sharing the stage with prime minister Narendra Modi at the launch of ‘TV9 Bharatvarsh’ just 40 days ago has been shown the door by the network’s new owners whom he, ironically, brought in to buy the company from its original promoter six months ago.

An official spokesman (see statement, above) confirmed that the board of directors, under the new management, had okayed the “removal” of Ravi Prakash as wholetime director on May 8, and an EGM of shareholders on May 10, had consented to the move.

Ravi Prakash reportedly did not attend either meeting.

Ravi Prakash, who owns 8.5 per cent in the holding company, Associated Broadcasting Company Pvt Ltd (ABCPL), however, shot off a “resignation” letter to the board in which he lashed  out at them, calling them “representatives of political honchos who are out there to devour “EVERY” journalist and independent media house today”.

It is not clear who the “political honchos” Ravi Prakash refers to are—whether they are in Hyderabad or Delhi—but the removal/resignation of the pioneering TV journalist caps a dramatic couple of days in one of India’s most successful news networks, which has a presence in Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati and English.

On Thursday, May 9, the residence and offices of Ravi Prakash were searched after two complaints of forgery, cheating and conspiracy had been lodged on April 24 and 30.

The headlines in today’s newspapers in Hyderabad said it all:

The police searches had been followed by rumours of Ravi Prakash absconding; of his arrest; of his seeking anticipatory bail; of his passport being seized. But he put paid to those rumours by appearing ‘live’ on air on Thursday night to assert that he was very much in charge.

TV9 promoter Srini Raju, a cousin of Ramalinga Raju of the now-defunct Satyam Infotech, had been trying to cash out for a long time now. Potential suitors included The Times of India group, NewsX, and the usual suspect, Rajeev Chandrasekhar of Asianet.

The charitable view is that Ravi Prakash, who apparently got the My Home group, and Megha Engineering and Constructions—to shell out Rs 460 crore for a 90 per cent stake, to stave off Rajeev Chandrasekhar, wanted to run the company like he did in the past: independently, without any editorial interference.

The new management in the last six months is believed to have had a hands-off approach like Srini Raju, except that, as an active investor, it wanted its own men on the board, which Ravi Prakash is alleged to have resisted by forging signatures, a charge which even his detractors find it difficult to believe.

“The new owners wanted to know the company better. Ravi was not used to dealing with people like these,” says an insider. The buzz in Hyderabad is that at least one of the new owners is extremely close to the Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS).

TV9 had initially been valued at around Rs 1,200 crore but that valuation was driven down by a boycott of the channel by cable owners in the Hyderabad/Telangana region in protest at the depiction of TRS politicians. Wink, wink.

The conspiracy theory is that the change of ownership of TV9 and the change of helmsmanship has all to do with the national ambitions of Telangana politicians. Ravi Prakash, by this reading, had been told that he could stay on for six months but he was now insistent on clinging on.

The backdated sale of shares to Telugu actor Sivaji, who did a sting operation titled ‘Operation Garuda‘ to show how the BJP was trying to overthrow the Andhra Pradesh government by buying up MLAs like in Karnataka, seems to have muddied the waters further.

The matter is now before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and likely to come up on May 16.

Against this background buzz, TV9 launched its Hindi channel TV9 Bharatvarsh on March 31, where Narendra Modi came and spoke. The new owners, according to one source, was either not informed of, or invited to, the new channel’s launch.

Cyberabad police bust human trafficking racket at Hyderabad airport, 18 held

A police constable working in the Chevella police station and two people who were working with an airlines, were also held for actively assisting the accused.

Telangana News: The Cyberabad police in Hyderabad said that it had busted an international human trafficking racket and cracked a fake passport and visa nexus, taking 18 people into custody.

Special teams of the Cyberabad Police said that they nabbed 15 illegal travel agents on Tuesday along with a police constable working in the Chevella police station and two people who were working with an airlines, for actively assisting the accused.

“In the month of March 2019, 10 cases of possession of fake visas of certain international passengers who were going on work visas to Kuwait were registered at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) police station, while from January, 14 cases were registered in which 71 accused were arrested and 21 accused were absconding,” the police said in a press note, stating that in view of the seriousness of these cases, they decided to crack down on illegal agents running such rackets.

Following this, a special team was formed by Cyberabad Commissioner V C Sajjanar with two DCP-level officers, which busted the racket.

Hyderabad, Dec 6 Over Rs 3.50 crore in cash has been seized from a van in Warangal district on the eve of the assembly polls in Telangana, police said Thursday.

The money was to be conveyed purportedly to some political leaders for distribution to influence voters, the police said.

Visakhapatnam: Surgeon among 3 held for black money conversion, Rs 47 lakh seized

The Visakhapatnam police arrested three people, including an orthopaedic surgeon, while they were converting alleged black money into white.

Police seized Rs 47 lakh in cash from the trio, of which Rs 46 lakh were in Rs 2,000 denomination.

Acting on a tip-opff, police arrested three people, M Surya Prasad Reddy, B Srinivasa Rao, and Dr Anne Sireesh, from an apartment on the Shankar Matam Road while they were trying to exchange money.

On further investigation, police found that Dr Sireesh, an orthopaedic surgeon with the Annapurna Hospital in Visakhapatnam, had earlier exchanged demonetised Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes with valid currency on a 30 per cent commission.

"We carried out a raid on Flat no. 401 in Sri Pavan Apartment on Shankara Matam Road and apprehended the trio," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Chittibabu.

"We recovered Rs 47 lakh from them, all in Rs 2,000 and Rs 100 currency notes. It has been learnt that Dr Sireesh had exchanged Rs 50 lakh in old currency with new notes in the past," the officer said.

The city police has informed the Income Tax department about the raid.

After a tip-off, a major hawala racket was busted by the Hyderabad police on Tuesday. Cash worth Rs 3.75 crore and two cars were seized. Four persons were arrested in link with the case, by the West zone Task Force police, said the city police commissioner, Anjani Kumar. The arrested were identified as Eshwar Dileep Solanki (29), Harish Ram Bhai Patel (35), Ajith Singh (34) and Rathod Kanak Singh Natuba (42), all from Gujarat and residing in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad. On credible information that four persons were moving in two cars with a huge amount of cash, the police intercepted two cars on Road No 12, Banjara Hills. The four occupants were carrying Rs 3.75 crore cash without any valid documents. Their interrogation revealed that they were working at P Vijay and Company, which is located in Mumbai and its owner has been identified as Kamlesh Shah, a native of Ahmedabad, who has a branch office at Hyderabad. Two people, identified as Dinesh and Giri, were working as the company in-charge of the Hyderabad branch. The accused Ajith Singh R Dodiya, Rathod Kanak Singh Natubha and a woman, Thokar Soalben, a cook, were working with Dinesh and Giri at Hyderabad office. On Monday, two of the accused, Eshwar Dileep Solanki and Harish Ram Bhai Patel came to Hyderabad on Monday in a four-wheeler, Mahindra Scorpio, to collect the cash from Dinesh and Giri working at the branch office in Banjara Hills. They collected the cash on Tuesday and all the four were proceeding in two cars, the Mahindra Scorpio and a Hyundai Accent, to Solapur, when they were intercepted by the Task Force sleuths. The police suspect that the amount is part of a hawala transaction facilitated by a Mumbai firm. According to the official proceedings, the Police Commissioner said the seized amount will be handed over to the Income Tax Department for further action. The persons who are in possession of money will be examined by the Income Tax department.
