Pissed Jeans — Half Divorced (Sub Pop)
“Too bad/we’re screwed,” Pissed Jeans vocalist Matt Korvette triumphantly spewed on “No Convenient Apocalypse,” the eponymous side A of last year’s standalone single. Come this year and the sentiment hasn’t changed much. But, for this band, has it ever? Gleeful, supercharged pessimism is what they do. If anything, in Half Divorced, the Allentown, PA, quartet’s sixth full-length Jeans get even more explicitly bummed; the stakes yet higher, the scraping on the way to rock bottom increasingly frantic. Titles like “Cling to a Poisoned Dream” and “Sixty-Two Thousand Dollars in Debt” make past complaints like “Ashamed Of My Cum” (Shallow, 2005) or “Caught Licking Leather” (Hope For Men, 2007) seem trivial in the face of an interminable mid-life crisis, 21st century-style.
“Cling to a Poisoned Dream” and “Sixty-Two Thousand Dollars in Debt” are back to back and act like a pair. Both are fast and raucous and delivered with a truckload of bravado. Of course, this being a Pissed Jeans record, the bravado never lapses but the words strip it naked. The former’s title is a refrain, each hopeful qualifier immediately undercut by a reminder that the pursuit will, at best, make you sick, even if you manage to “keep [your] head down [and] swallow what’s left of your pride.” The latter gets more specific. While you’re clinging, make sure you’re paying things down – sure, you’ll inevitably “pass it on to [your] child,” but you can look forward to “someday [being only] sixty one thousand dollars in debt.” Maybe you’ll even smile once in a while!
Pissed Jeans are one of the few bands who can be described (with little fear of provoking a contemptuous eye roll) as “skewering” things. This applies to their treatment of personal near-ruin, as in “Sixty-Two Thousand…” and “...Poison Dream,” and, just as sharply, to the odious other — the people they’ve been unlucky enough to interact with. The apex of the form is, appropriately, “People Person” from Hope For Men, but Half Divorced’s “Helicopter Parent” is a worthy addition to their canon of oblivious and unpleasant characters. From the first line (“Oh you started getting bored, so you went and had a kid”), Korvette excoriates the psyche, the past, the present and future of his titular target over an ominous, feedback-riddled stomp laid down in unison by the rest of the band. By the last lines (“It's time to reflect and maybe contemplate respect instead of/micromanagement because it's just a generational dead-end”), he’s moved past annoyance to hit on something more fundamentally disturbing. It’s not only financial debt that one generation passes down to another, but their vapidities and hang-ups. It’s a dead-end; it’s a vicious cycle.
Like their Sub Pop label-mates in Mudhoney, Pissed Jeans back up their humor and disgust with hurtling, curdling sonic assaults – you can practically feel yourself shoved into a cloud of sweat and moshing bodies when the chorus hits on “Junktime.” But there’s often more than initially batters the ear. For all the sturm und drang on Half Divorced, the component parts of each song are well-differentiated and clean. You get a clear sense of both the individual performances and their interaction. For instance, on “Everywhere Is Bad,” we’re greeted by the thick slashes of Bradley Fry’s guitar, but never lose track of the tight, manic beat of Randall Huth’s bass as it scales the writhing jungle gym of sound, courtesy of Fry and drummer Sean McGuinness — delightfully, the latter takes a break from blasting elephant-caliber birdshot to bust a round, infectious solo. The call-and-response litany of dismissals, in four words or less, of everywhere from Mars (“could use some air”) to hell (“too many dudes”), are the highlight of the song, but the groove carved out by the band’s heavy agility makes the punchlines stick.
Pissed Jeans have always been able to make a personal grievance or mild hassle sound existential — see putting on a tight black shirt versus not bothering on “False Jesii Part 2” (King Of Jeans, 2009) — but with Half Divorced the desperation gets dialed up. When, on “(Stolen) Catalytic Converter,” Korvette says “I feel sick/but I can’t puke,” it seems right to extrapolate the almost absurd helplessness widely. The crass, humiliating and, worst of all, mundane depths of lives that aren’t quite falling apart are well-plumbed in the back catalog and that chronicle continues here, with vigor and feeling. Like the figure on its cover, Half Divorced stares down a smoking hole in the ground, the band hollering for everyone (someone, anyone!) to come look. “Too bad/we’re screwed.” At least we know it now.

im being so annoying with my posting but it’s the world cup so...
so i thought i’d do a little post about germany’s women’s squad! currently our coach is voss-tecklenburg, who became the coach of germany at an inconvenient time- the team is in a state of transition. krahn, behringer, laudehr and mittag are no longer part of the squad- and they were linchpins in the squad. wolfsburg’s popp, marozsán and schult (though she’s struggled with a loss of form) have leadership roles within the team.
there is a good blend of experience and youth- hendrich, our FC Bayern defender, and potsdam’s huth are part of the squad still. däbritz, our fc bayern CM and magull, another fc bayern player- are you seeing a pattern here-are talented prospects.
we’ve meddled with a back 3 and a back 4, but in the words of jupp heynckes, 4-2-3-1 is king. our attacking mindset is what the team’s about, in my opinion. but i’m not sure how we’re going to go- we’ll see in the first group game!
SARA DÄBRITZ - PSG (BUT REALLY FC BAYERN)
ein Mädchen des FC BAYERN! she was with us anyway. find me a box to box central mid with quicker feet. she can spend 10 mins breaking up play and hitting safe passes, and then appear out of thin air to do a solo run between defenders and send them to the shadow realm. she’s always up for a thundercunt from twenty yards out too.
DZSENIFER MAROZSÁN- LYON
she’s god-tier. incredible. probably the best women’s playmaker on the planet. a lyon player (which shows you already that she’s good) who scored in the 2019 champions league final. she’s also won the champions legaue with franfkurt in 2015 she wasnt healthy to play, but in 2019 here she is, fit to play, even after a life-threatening condition in 2018. she’s a classic no.10 whose ball control is a cut above the rest of the girls- beautiful touches, dangerous and ambitious play and not someone to make many mistakes. with a fit no.10 and the best in the world at that to propel the offense i’m hoping to see some beautifully crafted goals.
ALEXANDRA POPP- WOLFSBURG
she’s spent some time getting adjusted in germany’s front line but now she’s established as a centre forward. she’s a classic forward, with a complete physical presence, and good movement on the ball. she was voted in the top 20 women’s football players. she has scored 100 career goals in the f.bundesliga and has 46 goals in 96 appearances
GIULIA GWINN- FREIBURG (SOON TO BE FC BAYERN)
guess what club this freiburg prospect is coming to? that’s right, fc bayern. she can be deployed on the right wing but can also be at right back. she’s also great in midfield. she has nice pace and she’s very promising, in the build up to the world cup she’s been one of the people i’m most excited for. excited to see how she develops as she still has a huge ceiling for growth.
so what am i expecting from this team? the coach has had short reign and we are yet to fully see what these girls can do- but i want them to fucking win, of course. we’ve got plenty of talent and prestige that other teams dont have. fuck france anyone would look good against south korea, we’re the team to watch :)

Artist of the Day
Kay Hassan
Untitled, 2013, paper construction, 106 x 70 inches
Kay Hassan was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1956. Though he is best known for his large scale ‘constructions’ made of torn, reconfigured, and pasted pieces of printed billboard posters, Hassan works in numerous media including painting, collage, installation, video, sculpture, and photography. Hassan's work is unified by a continuing interest in themes of migration, dispossession, trade, overproduction, waste, and urban life.
In an October 2000 feature in ArtThrob Hassan said, "Our lives have always been torn and put together and torn - people have always been pushed around. You see it in the streets, in the kids begging, those eyes, the way they look at you. Imagine being a parent, and having kids that have to be fed, but you have no money - so what do you do - you have to commit a crime. But I don't only reflect what is happening in South Africa, it's a reflection of what is happening in this world."
Kay Hassan has exhibited his work internationally in a career spanning over 30 years. Selected solo and group exhibitions include Daimler Contemporary, Haus Huth, Berlin, Germany, 2010; Nirox Foundation, Cradle of Humankind, South Africa, 2010; 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009; Stenersenmuseet, Oslo, 2009; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2008; Urbanation, Johannesburg Art Gallery, 2008; Kay Hassan, Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland, 2003; Bildmuseet, Umea, Sweden, 1998; and the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, 1995. In 2000, Kay Hassan was awarded the DaimlerChrysler Award for South African Contemporary Art, and exhibited in the 2015 Venice Biennale: All the World’s Futures, May 9 – November 22, 2015. courtesy of jackshainman.com

Jupiter & Okwess — Na Kozonga (Everloving)
youtube
Jupiter Bokondji has been everywhere and knows everyone. A native of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he spent his teenage years in Berlin where his father was a diplomat, immersing himself in psych, rock, pop and soul in the West, before returning to his birthplace as a near adult to immerse himself in the rich musical traditions of central Africa. Na Kozonga attests to the breadth of his experience and interest; it is as African as can be, but very much a rock album.
Consider, for instance, the cover “Na Kozonga” whose title translates as “Going Home.” It’s a loose cover of the 1973 German pop chestnut, “Hallo Bimmelbahn,” by the band Nighttrain, whose brief career must have been in full swing when Bokondji was enrolled in a Berlin secondary school. It’s a relic of Bokondji’s time away in that sense, and it swaggers with the kind of power-chord punctuated, hands-in-the-air 1970s rock and soul empowerment that Sly and the Family Stone took to its zenith. And yet, though, Bokondji sings most of it in German and hews to the melody laid down by the Huth brothers in the original, the song runs hotter, rougher and altogether more exciting than the original. The surging communal positivity of vocal interplay, the intricate percussion, the Sam & Dave style soul climaxes, the wigged out keyboard solo near the end, all lift it up and away from its source, towards something more exotic and powerful and deeply felt. It’s a song getting off the plane after a long time away, feeling a blast of heat and being undeniably home.
Bokondji works with a broad and diverse array of artists on Na Kozonga, starting with producer Mario Caldato, a Brazilian best known for his work with the Beastie Boys. You imagine that Caldato probably brought in Marcelo D2 for “Telejayi.” Caldato and Rio-based hip hop star have worked together before, honing a blend of rap and samba that mirrors, in a lot of ways, Jupiter & Okwess’ powerful blend of pop rock and African tradition. Likewise Chilean singer and rapper Ana Tijoux, on “Mieux Que Ça” (“Better Than This”) makes perfect sense; she is as fiery and modern and politically engaged as Bokondji himself. (Soul Coughing’s Mike Doughty is a less obvious choice, but it’s a very big tent that Bokondji pitches.)
The best meeting of minds, however, comes late in the album, when the six person Okwess band is augmented by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band in “Abalegele Gale.” The two bands met at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, got a chance to jam and found something worth pursuing, a squall of Dixieland horns and clarinet that peel off into chaotic joy out of the songs’ very African fluidity, warmth and sway. It’s a reminder that all music is just that, music, and that bonds can be forged across continents and styles, just by letting things rip.

Germany hammer Ukraine for perfect international break
Germany nearly hit a magical ten goals scored for their second straight game when they beat Ukraine 8-0 in qualifying for Euro 2021. The German women are, obviously, the heavy favorites in Group I; however, they sure seem determined to show they’re going to score a bunch of goals in the process.
Sara Dabritz grabbed a hat trick while solo goals were scored by Lina Magull, Felicitas Rauch, Lena Oberdorf, Svenja Huth, and Leonie Maier.
Oberdorf’s goal was her first with the senior national team. The 17 year old has become a regular under Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. While the Germans were cruising in this one, the final four goals all came after the 80th minute. With the Ukraine reeling, Germany pounced and punished every minor mistake.
The Germans have picked up six points out of the first two games, while scoring eighteen goals and conceding zero. They’ll return to qualifying in the October international break. Germany will host Ukraine on October 5 and travel to Greece on October 8.
Germany XI: Frohms — Rauch, Oberdorf, Doorsoun, Gwinn (61 Maier) — Dabritz, Maroszan, Magull (61 Dallmann) — Huth, Popp, Buhl (75 Knaak)
