Crimes That Shook Britain (East England)
Joanna Dennehy Joanna Dennehy grew up in a loving home. But, at 16, she left, got into drink and drugs and lived in a violent fantasy world. In March 2013, she launched a two-week killing spree, murdering men ‘for fun’. She lured Lukasz Slaboszewski, 31, to her Peterborough flat with suggestive texts, stabbed him and dumped his body.
Ten days on, she stabbed housemate, John Chapman, 56. Next, she killed her landlord Kevin Lee, 48. He was found in a ditch in a sequined dress. Days later, she stabbed two men at random. Both survived. When arrested, Dennehy laughed, danced around the police station, and was later diagnosed with psychopathic antisocial personality disorder.
Dennehy, 31, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder, and two of attempted murder. She received a whole-life sentence.
Suffolk Strangler Late in 2006, sex workers began disappearing - Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Annell Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell - after being picked up from the Ipswich red-light district.
Their naked bodies were found in remote locations. Police tracked the murders back to Steve Wright. He’d drop his partner at work, then trawl the red-light district for small, slight prostitutes. After having sex with them, he’d kill them, dump their bodies, then go home, get changed, and go to work.
Convicted of the five murders, he got a whole-life sentence. His repeated appeals have been unsuccessful.
Tony Martin In August 1999, Fred Barras, 16, and Brendon Fearon, 28, broke into Tony Martin’s Norfolk property.
Martin had trouble with burglars before. Arming himself with an unlicensed pump-action shotgun, he fired at the intruders as they fled. Both had leg wounds, but Barras was shot in the back and died.
Martin was tried for murder but claimed self-defense. He was convicted, jailed for life. The case provoked debate over rights to defend property. On appeal, Martin’s defense claimed he was suffering paranoia, particularly regarding burglars, when he killed Barras.
Martin’s conviction was reduced to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and he was released after three years.
Soham Murders The photo made headlines worldwide in August 2002. Smiling best friends, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both 10, in matching Man Utd football shirts.
Shortly after the photo was taken, the schoolgirls had left a family barbecue to buy sweets and vanished. Their bodies were found nearly two weeks later in a ditch near RAF Lakenheath, 12 miles from their homes in Soham.
School caretaker Ian Huntley, who’d given several TV interviews during the search, was arrested. He’d lured the girls into his house as they walked by and murdered them, before disposing of their bodies.
He was jailed for life. His girlfriend - the girls’ teaching assistant Maxine Carr - was jailed for perverting the course of justice after initially giving Huntley a false alibi. She was released in 2004.
Murder of Emma Ward Emma Ward’s family contacted police in May 2010, concerned for her safety. Her husband Nicky Ward claimed that weeks earlier she’d left him a note saying she was leaving him for another man - but there was no trace of the note.
Detectives found rubbish bags in the garden containing Emma’s passports, birth certificate and driving license. Ward was arrested. Forensics found bloodstains in the bedroom, on the landing, on a picture frame and pillowcase. Traces of Emma’s blood were in the bathroom, and on an electric saw.
Ward was charged with murdering his wife in the bedroom of their Norfolk home because she was about to leave him, and dismembering her body in the bath with a chainsaw. Her remains have never been found, but Ward was convicted, jailed for life.
Jeremy Bamber At 3:30am on 7 August 1985, Jeremy Bamber called the police claiming his father had phoned, said his sister Sheila had ‘gone beserk with his rifle. At his adoptive parents’ house in Malden, police found Bamber’s parents Neville and June, plus Sheila and her twins Nicholas and Daniel, 6, shot dead, the gun by Sheila’s side. Murder-suicide?
But Bamber’s girlfriend told police he’d confessed plans to hire a hitman to kill the family. And a blood-flecked silencer was found at the house. Bamber was convicted of killing his family to inherit their fortune. He received a whole-life sentence, but still protests his innocence.

Most striking is the lack of redress from these miscarriages (a misnomer if ever there was one, given the womb of justice was so clearly barren from the outset). Do the randy female amnesiacs get hauled up for wasting police time? Of course not. They still enjoy class victimhood if not de jure victimhood; just as the men are tainted by class guilt even when acquitted. Do the cops start investigating themselves for withholding evidence? Hell, no! They’ve got rapists to catch!
Unless those rapists happen to be Pakistanis queuing up staircases to have a go on a drunk, drugged, and heavily traumatized early teen, of course. In that case, British cops are happy to consider it as consensual. Keep up!

here's a bunch of my rambling, incoherent thoughts LoD S6, H, and the show's overall trajectory since S4
under the cut because it's LONG, these are just my personal opinions and feelings
the show's trajectory
i've been disappointed with the show's overall direction since S4 for multiple reasons. to be fair, the show had an uphill battle to maintain the level of quality that S2/S3 had. lindsay denton was this show's most interesting character and keeley hawes was phenomenal, and her storyline tied in perfectly with the conclusion of the caddy storyline. that was always going to be a tough act to follow.
the show has always had shocking twists and explosive action sequences, but when the show moved from bbc2 weeknights to bbc1 the show began to lean more heavily on them. in S1-3 these scenes fit in with the plot. after S4, it began to feel more like the show was a series of shocking twists/action sequences with a plot written around it.
the OCG is way too big and powerful
after S4, the OCG(s) became very big, powerful, and all-knowing, without actually showing us how they were achieving this, making it hard to believe. in S2, we had an ambush, the murder of hunter and trotman in the hospital room, the setup of dryden for blackmail, and lindsay's abduction from custody. these events were carried out/enabled by five characters: prasad, cole, dot, akers, and lindsay. we met them, we spent time with them (except cole), we had at least a rough idea of what motivated them or how they got involved, and how they pulled off what they did.
in S3, two important events (steve's firearm paperwork being forged and Urgent Exit Required) were enabled by one corrupt AFO. we didn't meet him or find out what his motives were, but i don't think we needed to - he was probably just one of dot's lackeys. but it's not that hard to believe that dot could get one corrupt AFO to do his bidding.
in contrast, since S4, it seems like the OCG has an endless supply of corrupt prison officers, AFOs, and balaclava men that they can deploy at a moment's notice, and these people are pretty disposable - how many of these people have been arrested, imprisoned, or murdered since S4? how many balaclava men died in the 6x04 ambush alone? aren't the OCG(s) running out of people to send on suicide missions by now? a story driven by a revolving door of disposable, mostly nameless people is much less compelling than a story that revolves around a small, familiar cast of believably corrupt/bent/blackmailed coppers. i think S4 and S6 could've been better if more of the plot was driven by the other officers on huntley's and davidson's teams, or just... any recognisable named character, rather than these disposable hired guns.
additionally, the OCG just silences/pays off/kills people off so easily the plot has become very predictable
the problem with H
so H wasn't an evil criminal mastermind, just some guy in it for the money. that part i had hoped for and expected - LoD is almost never about criminal masterminds with grand motives who just want to watch the world burn. LoD's antagonists/villains fall into the following categories:
a) people who make decisions that spiral terribly out of control (tony gates, roz huntley)
b) people who do bad things for the right reasons because the system offers no alternative (lindsay denton wanted to save carly; danny waldron killed his abuser; john corbett believed his crimes were the only way to unmask H because peartree was dragging its feet)
c) people who do bad things out of self-preservation because they've been blackmailed or groomed (dot, jo, maneet, ryan, hargreaves, hilton, hari baines)
d) bad people who do bad things out of self-interest, whose behaviour is enabled or incentivised by the system that fails to protect people (hunter, the murphys, fairbanks, prasad, cole, gill). these guys are not geniuses and they don't have grand motives, they do bad things because it benefits them directly and they can get away with it.
i think (?) Buckells falls into this last category. i don't have a problem with him being H in theory. i don't mind that he turned out not to be the "top man" bc i never liked the idea of there being a "top man", it's way too close to "a bad apple". i'm much more intrigued by the idea that there is a loose, semi-transient network of officers who are all acting out of a combination of self-interest (money, power, access to vulnerable people) and self-preservation (they all have an incentive to be loyal to the network because they all know dirt about each other, but if there's a motive and opportunity to take someone down without it coming back on them, they will). for this reason, i don't find it necessarily disappointing or implausible that buckells was the last man standing and that he was motivated by money.
however, the way the reveal was set up throughout S6 and executed in 6x07 was anticlimactic to me. buckells had a laptop in prison? he ordered kate's murder FROM PRISON? of course he did, that whole prison appears to be run by the OCG. this is the same problem i mentioned earlier, the OCG is just too powerful to be interesting. the reveal could've been way more effective if buckells hadn't spent the last half of the season in jail. i also would've liked to hear more from buckells about precisely what motivated him, exactly how he came to be involved, and how the other corrupt officers fit into his story. i would've loved it if, for once, someone just said fuck it and spilled the beans instead of going down the "i'll tell you a bunch of useless nonsense in exchange for WP" route.
that being said, i think this whole clusterfuck could've been avoided entirely by simply not making H into such a big deal. way back in S4, the fixation on H worked as a plot device to get hilton to issue ted with a reg-15 and cast doubt on him, but i was bored of H approximately 1.5 episodes into S5. the idea of this shadowy figure calling all the shots was inconsistent with everything this show had been about, and it dragged on for way too long. i wasn't opposed to the idea that H is a group of people not a single person, but morse code? srsly? you couldn't just have them sit down and say "hey, maybe dot just blinked on H because he'd had his eyes open for a while and also he'd lost a lot of blood so he was probably confused anyway?"

Line of Duty Timeline: Can This Help To Solve the Jo Davidson DNA Mystery?
https://ift.tt/3s4cUyW
Warning: contains major spoilers for Line of Duty series 1-6.
You could say we’ve taken this too far. You could be right. You could also say that, for a Line of Duty fan attempting to solve the Jo Davidson family mystery, it’s useful to know that Tommy Hunter was 13 years old when Jo Davidson was born, making him more likely to be her brother than her father. Or that John Corbett was born two months after Jo Davidson, making it impossible for his mother Anne-Marie McGillis to also be her mother.
And then there are the real questions, such as: the day before AC-12 raided Hillside Lane Station in series six, it was Kate Fleming’s 35th birthday. Did she bring in doughnuts? Had Kate come in worse for wear from one too many glasses of white in Frederico’s with Jo? The people demand to know.
Taken from police records glimpsed on screen and episode scripts, below are the key dates mentioned in Line of Duty, in chronological order, right from the start. We’ll update as series six continues. Use it to bolster your theories and beat your friends in arguments. Carry the fire, team.

WELCOME TO HOPE COUNTY, MONTANA.
With the motto “Freedom, Faith and Firearms,” Hope County was a fine place to earn an honest living, find peace and solitude in the great outdoors, get away from the ever-encroaching urban sprawl, gaze up at the stars, and live free without an overbearing government or regulations. But now that the Project at Eden’s Gate cult, known as “Peggies” in these parts, has arrived, the good folks of Hope County are under attack. Backed by his siblings and an army of fanatics, the Father is quickly cultivating lost souls and preparing them for the Collapse. And leaving a lot of blood and bodies in his wake.
Richard “Dutch” Roosevelt
The voice of the Resistance, Dutch has a checkered past and crotchety demeanor, but he is a vast source of knowledge about the cult. He wants Hope County back and is here to help you use every tool at your disposal to ensure Joseph Seed gives his next sermon from the grave.
PROJECT AT EDEN’S GATE: THE BAD SEEDS
Joseph Seed: The Father
Hailing from a small town in Georgia, Joseph heard a voice telling him to “save as many as you can, whether they wish to be saved or not.” He knows the world is headed for the Collapse. He is driven only by the Voice and the knowledge that he alone is humanity’s savior.
Jacob Seed: Herald of Whitefall Mountains
A cold-blooded Gulf War vet with a penchant for animal experimentation, Jacob is tasked with building an army of followers for his brother Joseph.
John Seed: Herald of Holland Valley
Younger brother of Joseph, John runs a successful law practice and is adept at marketing, using the power of “YES” to coax the curious into the cult.
Faith Seed: Herald of Henbane River
Joseph’s voice, proselytizing his message and keeping the congregation in a state of “bliss,” Faith is responsible for converting people and keeping them sedated with a mix of spirituality, drugs and music.
THE HOLLAND RESISTANCE
Mary May Fairgrave
Born and raised here, life wasn’t always easy, but it was good. When Mary May’s parents died, the bank seized the Spread Eagle saloon, and the Project at Eden’s Gate bought it for pennies. She’s not going to let this stand.
Find her at Fall’s End.
Pastor Jerome Jeffries
Serving in the first Gulf War and witnessing combat up close, Pastor Jerome first met Joseph ten years ago, but it wasn’t long before his unorthodox worship started to worry the Pastor. Then came the lockdown.
Find him at Fall’s End.
Nick Rye
All of his life, Nick has resisted the idea of going to war, especially after John Seed’s aggressive attempts to buy Rye’s crop-dusting business. It’s time to become a true American hero (as long as his wife says it’s okay).
Find him at Rye & Sons Aviation.

Find her at Wolf’s Den.
Wheaty
Wheaty is the third main member of the Whitetail Militia; a young, smart war vet with a quick wit, who wants to prove his worth and take down the cult any way he can. Joining the Resistance to help cope with a buddy’s death, he becomes more devoted to the cause every day.

Earl was selected as sheriff of Hope County because he’s touch, fair, and can let the crap roll off his back when he needs to. But the work has taken a toll, leading to one divorce and a mild heart attack.
Find him at Hope County Jail.
Mayor Virgil Minkler
When Virgil heard rumors that the Project at Eden’s Gate was involved in drug running, he went blind with rage. He’s not going to sell out his people just to win back his job. He wants these degenerate Peggies out of the region.
Find him at Hope County Jail.

Raising the Visibility of Black British Publishers.
Kadija George on the history of Black publishers in the UK
photo: Victor DIamini
‘The bravery and endurance of these Black and Asian publishers must be understood if we are to present a true image of British publishing and its impact on our society. It is also vital, if we are to encourage more BAME publishing professionals and writers, that British publishing is inclusive and welcomes all comers.’
‘Let’s Not Forget’ by Jazzmine Breary in Writing The Future report, published by Spread The Word 2015.
The history of Black publishers in Britain, much like other areas of Black history is at best invisible, or worse, misrepresented and misunderstood. The irony is that, although Black publishers tell the stories of Blacks in Britain, their own stories have until recently remained untold, even within the growing body of work on Black history. For example, in one of the most highly regarded texts of Black history in Britain, Staying Power by Peter Fryer, the mention of pioneering Black publishers amounts to one paragraph
However, 2015 was a turning point as two exhibitions in London featured the work and legacy of New Beacon Books (founded by Trinidadian John La Rose in 1966) and Bogle L’Ouverture Press, (founded by Eric and Jessica Huntley in 1967). ‘No Colour Bar’ at the Guildhall Gallery and ‘A Dream to Change the World’ at the Islington Museum (yes, John La Rose believed that the world could be positively changed through the publishing of works that spoke to justice and equality) were mounted with significant support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Their work is now increasingly recognised as having a major impact on Black history in Britain from the 1960s as they created space in print and protest to accurately reflect Black life in Britain from a Black informed bias rather than from a white speculative one. The work they published was primarily poetry, non-fiction and literary criticism in books, pamphlets, and journals. It is true however, that novels by Black writers were being published at this time by UK based publishers. In 1962 OUP had started Three Crowns and Heinemann had started the African Writers Series, but the latter was started as and remains an educational imprint, not intended for the UK market.
Although Allison and Busby was not a Black publishing house per se, the books they published, particularly in their early years (from 1966), mean that Margaret Busby is known as a stalwart publisher of those times. They published groundbreaking writers such as Nigerian author Buchi Emecheta, whose trilogy Ada’s Story told the story of a single mother of five struggling to survive and write in London. Emecheta is still heralded as a heroine, continuing to inspire women of all ages and ethnicities.
Hansib Publications was started by Arif Ali in 1971, initially to publish newspapers and journals, but gravitating to the publishing of books.
The first titles of all these publishers spoke out loudly against anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism, setting the trend for the titles that followed, some of which, such as How Europe Underdeveloped Africa continue to have significant sales today. Throughout the years, particularly until the mid-1980s, these publishers, along with others, worked together on various projects and campaigns.
One of the main challenges today then, for new Black publishers is to be visible within the publishing industry in an environment where impact and economic sustainability matter in a highly technical creative industry, yet the community still have expectations for them to be socially conscious too.
Within the past ten years, new black publishing houses that have emerged have clearly taken this on board. Crystal Mahey-Morgan, for example, promotes her publishing company, Own It! as a ‘lifestyle brand’. Established in 2015, she publishes fiction and non-fiction. Most of her experience in publishing is in marketing and she uses all of the elements at her disposal to enable her to fill a 1000-seater venue for an event focused on the book launch. She combines the traditional approach, announcing the hardback title in advance, alongside manipulating social and digital media to reach her various audiences. Similarly, the name of another press Jacaranda Books Arts Music, shows that they are aware of the importance of selling across products. Founded by Valerie Brandes in 2012, their aim is to ‘Celebrate cultural, ethnic and social diversity in literature.’
Limehouse Books, established in 2009 by Bobby Nayyar have taken a slightly different direction in that they commission books, rather than taking on the time-consuming manuscript submission and acquisition process. They have also partnered with organisations to produce books. Although Cassava Republic Press was established in Nigeria in 2006 by Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, she set up a branch in the UK ten years later to publish African writers in the diaspora. The rationale behind her selection comes from her belief that it’s the right time to ask challenging questions of African writing, ‘where have we come from, where are we now, where are we going?’ Their mission is to ‘change the way we all think about African writing’.
The founders of all of these publishing houses hold degrees in the field of publishing or and have worked in more than one mainstream publishing house as an employee, or paid internship, often through a training scheme for people from ethnically diverse backgrounds. They can also be seen at trade fairs such as the London Book Fair alongside their peers from other publishing houses. These are the main difference between them and their radical, activist predecessors, yet all acknowledge and are aware of the history of black publishing in Britain that has gone before them, the achievements made and the path that was paved for them by these publishers and of their responsibilities to the community, particularly to the community of readers that they want to reach and represent.
Black publishers, then and now, represent a specialised area of publishing. What could be considered, alongside increasing the diversity of human resources within mainstream publishing houses, is to place young white trainees within Black companies as part of their training, in order to gain knowledge that they would not otherwise access in a larger corporate entity. Leicester University, for example, run a transcultural publishing module for undergraduates in their final year. The module is always oversubscribed. Most of the students are not Black, yet it trains a future workforce to understand that cultural diversity is the norm rather than an exception.
Routes into publishing are gradually becoming more open to those who may previously only have seen closed doors. In the UK we are fortunate enough to have professional writer development programmes, partly funded by Arts Council England. The programmes offer advice and can point people in the direction of opportunities and further information if needed. Some of these, such as Inscribe and Commonword, have Black staff members with skills, knowledge and experience in various areas of publishing and writing.

Line of Duty: Ranking Every Bent Copper By Level of Corruption, Mother of God!
https://ift.tt/3s4cUyW
“When did we stop caring about honesty and integrity?” asks Supt. Ted Hastings in the Line of Duty series six trailer. His words could be this show’s battle cry. The first series of the BBC crime thriller was inspired by the 2005 fatal shooting of Jean-Charles de Menezes, an electrician mistaken for a terrorist by a Metropolitan Police surveillance team. In the four series since, it’s drawn on other real-life failures of the law – the framing of vulnerable people for serious crimes, child abusers being protected from investigation because of their status, officers leaking to the press and accepting bribes to facilitate organised crime.
This is a drama born in reaction to the ‘post-truth era’, repeatedly staging misgivings about the ongoing conflict between PR manipulation and unflattering realities. As such, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see the tagline for series six “Lies cost lives” intended as a critique of the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Underneath the trappings of this high-tension, high-action, twist-packed thriller is real concern about what people in power are getting away with.
The show’s villains can generally be divided into one of three categories: desensitised brutes, high status hypocrites, and people trying – with varying degrees of success – to dig themselves out of a hole, usually of their own making. Below are 30 such characters from series one to five, all police officers who’ve committed a crime of some kind – whether they’ve been caught or not – ranked in order of immorality.
Come back at the end of series six, which starts on Sunday the 21st of March at 9pm on BBC One, to see the new additions, and who may have moved up the ladder.
30. Supt. Ted Hastings
Crime: Robin Hooding £50K of dirty money Working for the OCG? Not on your nelly Currently: Commanding AC-12 but on a final written warning Sit. Rep: Let’s make one thing clear: Ted’s only on this list because he broke the letter of the law to commit an act of kindness. Instead of letting £50K of the cash with which the OCG attempted to bribe him in series five sit around in an evidence bag, he secretly gave it to the widow of DS John Corbett, a pawn in Gill Biggeloe’s cruel and corrupt game.
29. PC Maneet Bindra
Crime: Suppressing a line of inquiry that incriminated her cousin, leaking sensitive files Working for the OCG? Indirectly and initially, without her knowledge Currently: Deceased Sit. Rep: PC Maneet Bindra (RIP) was good police and a loyal cousin. When ACC Hilton asked her to leak AC-12 secrets in exchange for him stopping her gambling-addict cousin from losing his job, she followed the orders of a much senior officer. When her cousin was bribed by the OCG to help them plan an ambush on a shipment of heroin, Maneet tried to protect him. When that cost her job, she tried to put it right and they killed her.
28. PS Colin Brackley & Co.
Crime: Manslaughter and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice Working for the OCG? No Currently: Still serving, as far as we know. No charges were brought against the team Sit. Rep: In the opening minutes of the first ever episode, Sgt Brackley shot dead an innocent man – Kareem Ali – after the team mistook Ali’s No. 59 flat for the target flat No. 56 due to a broken door number. At the behest of Chief Inspector Philip Osborne, the squad colluded in an attempt to cover up the botched killing, but Steve Arnott refused to lie, which led to his recruitment by AC-12.
27. CC Philip Osborne
Crime: Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice Working for the OCG? Jury’s out on that one Currently: The CC of Central Police, aka the top dog Sit. Rep: Come back in seven weeks and Chief Constable Philip Osborne could well have shot straight to the top of this list. The reason he’s in such a low position currently is that we only know that he pressured his Counter-Terrorism team to cover up a botched op. We suspect though, that he could well be up to his neck in the OCG. Is he the fourth senior ranking officer in their pay?
26. PC Kieran Bloom
Crime: Faking an ambush to divert resources from the Eastfield depot raid Working for the OCG? Indirectly, yes Currently: Presumably no longer a police officer Sit. Rep: DCS Hargreaves (blackmailed by the OCG, who obtained his DNA when he abused an underage sex trafficking victim at a gang-run ‘brothel’) made PC Bloom call in the fake ambush on the night of the Eastfield Depot raid, so he’d have an excuse to be in the area.
25. DCI Mark Moffatt
Crime: Conspiring to bribe and frame Supt. Ted Hastings Working for the OCG? Yes Currently: He was arrested and charged by AC-12, so, serving time? Sit. Rep: We met Moffatt as Roz Huntley’s Police Federation Rep. in series four, and maybe he was already in the OCG’s pocket at that point. He clearly was by series five, after his retirement from the force, when he used his new property development position to attempt to bribe Ted Hastings with £100K of the gang’s filthy lucre.
24. PC Jane Cafferty
Crime: Stopping a police convoy so the OCG could ambush it Working for the OCG? Yes Currently: Presumably serving time Sit. Rep: Cafferty was recruited by DI Cottan in 2015 when the OCG blackmailed her, threatening to release CCTV footage of her affair to her husband and family. She was forced to pass information and assist in the ambush of the heroin convoy, and later provided the info they needed to ambush a shipment of weaponry.
23. PC Kevin Greysham, PC Ray Randhawa, PC Carl Waldhouse
Crime: As above. Working for the OCG? Yes. Currently: Shot dead by the OCG. Sit. Rep: In Jane Cafferty’s police interview, she confirmed that the three officers killed by the OCG during the heroin ambush weren’t innocent men. Greysham and Randhawa were both on the take from the gang, while Waldhouse was being blackmailed by them over his use of sex workers.
22. DS Jayne Akers
Crime: Rerouting a police convoy to allow a witness to be murdered; bribing DI Denton Working for the OCG? Yes, in cahoots with DI Cottan Currently: Shot dead by the OCG Sit. Rep: Jayne Akers appealed to Lindsay Denton’s sense of moral justice to convince her that the only way to see Carly Kirk’s abusive pimp Tommy Hunter punished was to break the law and allow the OCG to get to him. Perhaps she also felt that she was on a crusading mission? Either way, they both took the gang’s bribe money.
21. DC Jamie Desford
Crime: Tipping off ACC Hilton so he could evade capture, attempting to abscond with suspect Jimmy Lakewell Working for the OCG? Yes, via ACC Hilton Currently: Fired from the police Sit. Rep: DCI Roz Huntley did two good things when she realised that the jig was up: she arrested Jimmy Lakewell and talked Jamie Desford down from what would have been the very serious crime of shooting a police officer. Like PC Maneet Bindra, Desford seemed to be another officer exploited by Hilton, who didn’t care who he used.
20. DC Nigel Morton
Crime: Leaking stories to the press, faking his disability for benefits, spitting on Kate and leaving excrement in Steve’s car, and most egregiously: finding out Dot was the Caddy but not telling anybody Working for the OCG? No Currently: Retired on a cushy pension Sit. Rep: Perhaps the laziest bent copper on this list, Neil Morrissey’s character did a lot of little bad things and got away with them all.
19. Merchant and Leland
Crime: Assaulting prisoner Lindsay Denton with boiling water Working for the OCG? Yes Currently: Rumoured to be returning in series six Sit. Rep: These two aren’t technically police officers, but employees of SecuritVite, the private security firm that staffs HMP Brentiss. Not strictly bent coppers then, but definitely a couple of wrong’uns who abused their power to try to keep Lindsay Denton quiet inside.
18. Tim Ifield
Crime: Planning to dismember and dispose of DCI Roz Huntley’s corpse Working for the OCG? No Currently: Accidentally killed by DCI Roz Huntley Sit. Rep: A tricky placement, this, and technically another civilian. In series four, forensics coordinator Tim Ifield was the squeaky wheel convinced there was something wrong with the evidence incriminating Michael Farmer, and he was spot-on – Farmer was being framed by the OCG. So far, so honest. When Ifield wrongly thought he’d killed DCI Huntley in a struggle though, it was much less honest of him to attempt to dispose of the body than to report it.
17. PS Martina Tranter
Crime: Attempted murder of witness Gill Biggeloe Working for the OCG? Oh yes Currently: Dead, we think. Last seen being stretchered out of HQ after Steve shot her Sit. Rep: What a twist. When Gill Biggeloe was rumbled, the OCG decided she wasn’t worth extracting so instead had bent AC-3 copper try to kill her in the Ladies toilet. Luckily, Steve and Kate were there to save the day.
16. PC Hari Bains
Crime: Conspiracy and murder Working for the OCG? Yes, through Dot Cottan Currently: Presumably serving time Sit. Rep: In series three, Danny Waldron forced PC Bains, PC Kennedy and PC Brickford to corroborate his version of the killing of Ronan Murphy, then Dot blackmailed Hari to kill Waldron, who was investigating an historical paedophile ring run by the OCG. Hari shot Waldron and the others covered for him initially before Rod threatened to talk and Dot killed him, faking his suicide.
15. DCI Tony Gates
Crime: Laddering his stats, covering up Jackie Laverty’s hit-and-run, colluding with the OCG to cover up the Greek Lane murders Working for the OCG? Under duress, yes Currently: Killed himself by walking into traffic Sit. Rep: Gates started out mildly corrupt – massaging his team’s results to provide ACC Hilton with better stats and accepting the odd free breakfast. When his OCG money-laundering mistress ran over her accountant and he helped her to cover it up though, he got entangled with the gang, who killed Jackie and threatened to frame him for her murder if he didn’t assist in covering up a series of drug murders. Gates did bad things, but redeemed himself by bringing in Tommy Hunter before he reached the end of the line.

14. DCI Roz Huntley
Crime: Attempting to cover up the manslaughter of Tim Ifield Working for the OCG? No, though her boss ACC Hilton and husband’s pal Jimmy Lakewell were Currently: Serving a 10 year sentence for Manslaughter in HMP Brentiss Sit. Rep: Huntley’s corruption may have been OCG-adjacent, but she was just trying to save her own skin after accidentally murdering a man who was about to dismember what he thought was her corpse. Instead of coming clean about what happened with Ifield, she cut off his fingers and tampered with evidence to protect herself, but was eventually caught out by a symbolically festering wound.
13. DI Lindsay Denton
Crime: Accepting a bribe to reroute a witness transport so the OCG could ambush it, driving a car into DS Manish Prasad Working for the OCG? Yes, but also working for moral justice Currently: Shot dead by DI Matthew Cottan Sit. Rep: More sinned against than sinning? Denton was bent, absolutely, but her corruption perhaps says less about her than about the limitations of the law in seeing justice done. Knowing that Tommy Hunter was a child-exploiting pimp, Denton agreed to collude in his murder, recognising that his immunity deal would otherwise protect him from punishment. When she rammed DS Prasad (see below) with a car, it was because he was another child-abusing bastard who frankly, deserved everything he got.
12. DCC Mike Dryden
Crime: Officially, perverting the course of justice. Unofficially, being a pervert Working for the OCG? He says not, but they had blackmail material on him Currently: Resigned from the force Sit. Rep: This may seem a high position for Dryden, but really, what a scumbag. Even forgetting Dryden’s affair with Lindsay Denton, he had a sexual predilection for underage girls and engaged in a sex act with exploited teenager Carly Kirk – set up by Tommy Hunter so the OCG could blackmail him with Kirk’s dead body (or a body made to look like Kirk’s – she’d actually managed to escape). When Dryden’s wife was caught speeding, he lied that he was driving to get an alibi for the time he was abusing Carly. Nasty, selfish, and only out to protect himself.
11. DCS Les Hargreaves
Crime: Colluding in the Eastfield Depot raid, sexually abusing trafficking victims Working for the OCG? Yes, blackmailed to do so Currently: Shot dead by DS John Corbett Sit. Rep: The OCG ran the illegal brothel Hargreaves visited to have sex with underage trafficking victims, which meant they had blackmail material on him. Not just that, they kept his used condoms in a freezer, ready to plant his DNA on any murder victim they chose. That’s why he helped them steal the £50 million of goods from Eastfield depot, where he was killed.
10. DS Danny Waldron
Crime: Murder, kidnapping, torture, conspiracy Working for the OCG? Absolutely not Currently: Shot dead by PC Hari Bains Sit. Rep: This is another tricky one. There’s no doubt that Danny Waldron did terrible things, but much like Lindsay Denton, he did those terrible things to some truly terrible people. Ronan and Linus Murphy were part of the paedophile ring that abused boys at the Sands View Children’s Home. When Danny killed one, and tortured and beheaded the other, it was hard not to sympathise. Once again, his acts showed a police officer not trusting the legal system to provide justice.
9. AFO Lambert
Crime: Shooting fellow officers to bust DI Cottan out of HQ, helping to frame Steve for Lindsay Denton’s murder Working for the OCG? Big time Currently: Shot dead by DI Kate Fleming Sit. Rep: A surprise maybe, that a character with no lines would be so high up this list, but AFO Lambert did very bad things. When Dot had been rumbled and requested an urgent extraction, it was Lambert who shot his fellow guard and escorted Cottan out of the premises. Prior to that, he’d helped Dot doctor the firearms paperwork that almost had Steve framed for the shooting of Lindsay Denton. In the end, Kate took him down.
8. DS John Corbett
Crime: Murdering at least five bent coppers, torturing Roisin Hastings Working for the OCG? Yes and no. He ran it, but as an undercover officer Currently: Killed by the OCG Sit. Rep: Like Ted Hastings, DS Corbett was on a mission to rid Central Police of bent coppers, but unlike Ted Hastings, DS Corbett took an unlawful shortcut. He had the heroin convoy coppers killed, had Maneet’s throat slit and personally gunned down DCS Hargreaves. The really unconscionable act though, was his torture of Roisin Hastings.
7. Gill Biggeloe
Crime: Major cover-ups, perverting the course of justice, enabling institutional corruption Working for the OCG? Absolutely Currently: In witness protection, somewhere bleak Sit. Rep: “It’s complicated”, Gill told Ted when he asked her why she’d tried to frame him as ‘H’, but then she’s always had that “non-exclusive relationship with the truth”. It wasn’t complicated; Gill Biggeloe was just greedy and took the OCG’s money to fund her silk blouses and posh car. Not strictly an officer, she was Central Police’s Senior Legal Counsel, and as such enabled multiple crimes. Most heinously of all, she very nearly succeeded in framing Ted Hastings and disbanding AC-12.
6. DC Jeremy Cole
Crime: Murdering the 5th September ambush cops, pushing Georgia out of a window, killing Tommy Hunter, impersonating a nurse Working for the OCG? Hundo P Currently: Beaten to death by DS Prasad (see below) Sit. Rep: Just an absolute bent bastard. Along with DS Prasad, these Vice cops groomed vulnerable underage girls to be sexually exploited by Tommy Hunter’s operation.
5. DS Manish Prasad
Crime: All of the above, plus beating DC Cole to death Working for the OCG? Oh yeah Currently: He requested immunity, so probably in witness protection Sit. Rep: Prasad and Cole were evil pieces of work who abused their positions to exploit the vulnerable, carried out gangland executions and generally provide the OCG’s muscle. DI Denton did get a confession out of Prasad, but seeing as she obtained it by breaking his legs with a car, it wouldn’t have been admissible in court.
4. SPO Ryan Pilkington
Crime: Years of low-level drug dealing and runner work, the murder of DS John Corbett Working for the OCG? He’s the new Caddy, basically Currently: A new recruit for Central Police Sit. Rep: Ryan got in with the OCG when he was just a lad, and even at that age took part in some dreadful business including the torture of Steve Arnott. He’s seemingly without a conscience, happily slitting John Corbett’s throat, bullying Terry Boyle and cracking jokes about Jackie Laverty’s corpse. His recruitment as a student police officer was series five’s bitter punchline.
3. ACC Derek Hilton
Crime: Conspiracy to murder Steve Arnott and frame Michael Farmer, aiding DI Cottan’s career progression, recruiting Maneet Bindra and Jamie Desford for the OCG Working for the OCG? Yes Currently: Shot dead by the OCG in what we assume was a faked suicide Sit. Rep: ACC Hilton’s very high up on this list for a character who, as far as we know, didn’t personally kill or torture anybody, but just because he didn’t get his hands dirty doesn’t mean he wasn’t responsible for some truly terrible things, not least the attempted murder of Steve Arnott in series four. Being the Assistant Chief Constable, he had oversight of so many police operations and did untold damage to lawful investigations while being blackmailed by the OCG.
2. DI Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan
Crime: A career’s worth of corruption assisting the OCG, the murders of PC Rod Kennedy and DI Lindsay Denton, lord knows what else Working for the OCG? Since he was a boy Currently: Shot dead by the OCG Sit. Rep: He was ‘The Caddy’, a legendarily corrupt officer who audaciously transferred to Anti-Corruption Unit 12 after series one to curtail their investigations into the OCG. He enabled countless crimes and committed many himself, including the blackmail and recruitment of fellow officers. He’d be top of this list, in fact, if it wasn’t for Craig Parkinson’s humanising performance in the series three, where Dot was revealed not to be a moustache-twirling villain, but someone in well over his head, who’d been groomed and exploited since he was young. And how’s this for redemption? Dot died taking a bullet for Kate Fleming. In his Dying Declaration, he regularly continues to provide AC-12 with insider tips from beyond the grave. You can hate what the Caddy did, but you can’t hate him.
1. Ch. Supt. Patrick Fairbanks
Crime: Participating in and covering up the long-term sexual abuse of children Working for the OCG? In cahoots with them, yes Currently: Serving a 10 year sentence Sit. Rep: The dreadful nature of Fairbanks’ crimes combined with his seniority are what make him the worst of the worst. A mason, he used his connections and position to quell the voices of the children he abused, and colluded with fellow abusers in the OCG to kill the sole adult who tried to help them – social worker Oliver Stephens Lloyd. A criminal protected by his status, he’s a symbol of corruption, who was living a comfortable retirement as a pillar of the community until Danny Waldron and AC-12 did their jobs and sent him down in perhaps the most satisfying collar of the series as a whole.

Huntley's Aquarium Application Form
Hello,
Thank You for your interest in the Marine Life Assistant position at Huntley’s Aquarium. We are happy to say that you have been chosen for this assignment! Here is the mandatory rules and regulations training regarding your position:
Our exhibits are to remain publicly undisturbed as possible. We take pride in giving our audience as well as the animals a good quality of life during their respective stays.
Always start customer conversations with a friendly smile and good manners. If a customer is curious (ex. Where is the bathroom, where is my child, why do the fish have canine teeth, etc.) please refer them to our senior staff members.
The audience viewing tanks are to be well cleaned and sanitized after closing.
Do not allow red smears to appear on audience viewing tanks. This will spark aggression within the reef fish and may cause a feeding frenzy and dismemberment of audience members.
The cylindrical viewing tank in the “Larger than Life” exhibit is the home of the “Gelled Groupers.” They should always be swimming clockwise.
If you see them swimming counterclockwise, change of fish color, or glass melting, notify a senior staff member immediately and quietly leave the exhibit. After 20 minutes, evacuate any salvageable audience from the area.
Always euthanize and dispose of contaminated sentient customers, no matter how human they seem. We will provide you one(1) machete.
The “Deepwater Monstrosities” exhibit consists of Herbert (Nonapus), Byron (Violet Crab) and Jill ([Not Authorized]).
Herbert is usually camouflaged. If feeding, check for breathing pulsation patterns in the far corner of the tank, under the reef ledge, or beneath the exit ladder. Do not engage Herbert in conversation. He is very talkative and likes to bait for a neck strike.
Byron is gigantic (relative to a human). This is his normal size. You may see dental fillings at the tank bottom. We think he likes to collect them. Both of Byron’s claws are crushers. Most importantly, Immediately exit the tank if he sees you. He favors cornering.
Jill’s habitat is being reconstructed, therefore mind the “KEEP OUT” hazard signage. If the sign changes to “GRAND OPENING!” Immediately vacate the premises. Do not alert customers. She’s an ambush predator.
If you see something, don’t say anything. Our staff is always prepared, and almost always easily replaceable.
If you think this is not the right job for you, keep in mind we retain personal information (ex. Home address, SSN, immediate family contact). Please refer to upper management.
After an “incident,” always make sure your supplied gas mask is on before the amnesiacs are administered through the AC unit. We do not want to retrain you.
This concludes your rules and regulations training. We hope to see you bright and early at 7:00 am tomorrow. Attendance is essential! We’ll know if you’re lying.
Warm Wishes,
Simon Reyes, Recruitment Officer
