Royal Enfield Hunter 350: Your questions answered
When Royal Enfield launched the Hunter 350 two years ago, it opened up a whole new segment for the traditionally retro company. The Hunter took (almost) everything Royal Enfield stood for and turned it on its head, in the best way possible. Here, we’ll answer some commonly asked questions about the lightest modern-day Royal Enfield.
How many variants does the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 come in? The Royal Enfield Hunter 350 comes in two variants: Retro and Metro. The Retro variant uses a rear drum brake, wire-spoke wheels shod with tubed tyres, simpler instrumentation and switchgear, simpler seat, tubular grab rail, rectangular indicators and more staid colours. Currently, the Retro variant only comes in a single colour 'Factory Black'.
The Metro variant gets a rear disc (therefore, dual-channel ABS), alloy wheels (therefore, tubeless tyres), modern-day RE switchgear, a slightly more advanced display, round indicators, a quilted seat, fancier pillion grab rail and can be available in seven vibrant colours.
What is the weight and seat height of Royal Enfield Hunter 350? It weighs 178kg, while the Metro has a kerb weight of 181kg. Both have an identical 790mm seat height, which is quite low and most riders should be able to manage it. Despite this, the Hunter is also reasonably comfortable for taller riders, while being on the lighter side (at least in the Royal Enfield realm).
What is the fuel economy of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350? In our tests, the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 returned 30.6kpl inside city limits and 39.8kpl out on the highway. These numbers make it the most fuel efficient of the Royal Enfield 350cc models. Since the engine is largely in the same state of tune as the other bikes, this can be attributed to its relatively lighter kerb weight and smaller wheels (which reduce rolling resistance).
What is the 0-100kph time of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350? At 15.15seconds, the Hunter is the quickest accelerating 350cc Royal Enfield model you can purchase today. However, in comparison to other 300-400cc bikes like the Honda CB300R and the Triumph Speed 400 (both of which use modern liquid-cooled motors), this number is much slower.
What is the price of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350? The Hunter starts at Rs 1.50 lakh, for the sole Retro colour. Then you have the four Dapper colours which cost Rs 1.70 lakh and the range-topping dual-tone Rebel colours are priced at Rs 1.75 lakh. These were the prices at launch, and the company hasn’t given it a single price hike yet, nearly two years later. Perhaps that explains why the Hunter continues to be a strong seller for Royal Enfield. This competitive pricing makes the Hunter the most affordable entry into the company's lineup and only the Military variant of the Bullet 350 costs similiar to the top-spec Hunter variants.

A Montana rancher was sentenced to six months in prison on Monday after cloning a "near threatened" sheep from Asia and then selling its offspring to shooting preserves, according to court documents.
Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, 81, will spend six months in federal prison, with a 3-year supervised release and have to pay a $20,000 fine and a $4,000 community service payment for cloning the near-threatened Marco Polo sheep from the Asian country Kyrgyzstan.
Schubarth was sentenced for committing two felonies, conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act and substantively violating the Lacey Act, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The Lacey Act is a law that bans the trafficking of illegally taken wildlife, fish, or plants.
Schubarth and at least five other people conspired to "create a larger hybrid species of sheep that would garner higher prices from shooting preserves" from 2013 to 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Schubarth’s criminal conduct is not how Montanans treat our wildlife population,” said U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich for the District of Montana in a statement. “Indeed, his actions threatened Montana’s native wildlife species for no other reason than he and his co-conspirators wanted to make more money."
Rancher illegally bought parts of the sheep
The rancher illegally brought parts of the near-threatened Marco Polo argali sheep, one of the largest sheep species in the world, weighing 300 pounds or more, to the U.S. from the Asian country Kyrgyzstan, court records show.
From 2013 to 2021, Schubarth also sold mountain sheep, mountain goats and various other hoofed animals primarily to captive hunting facilities, according to the Justice Department.
Captive hunting facilities, or shooting preserves, allow "allow trophy hunters to shoot animals who are fenced in," according to the Humane Society of the United States. "The animals are often semi-tame—some have even been hand raised or bottle fed by humans."
"Argali sheep are trophy hunted due to their large size and unique long spiraling horns," according to court documents. "Argali horns are the largest of any wild sheep."
Argali sheep have a market value of over $350 per animal, according to court documents.
A protected species
The sheep are natives to the high elevations of the Pamir region of Central Asia, and "are prohibited in the State of Montana to protect native sheep from disease and hybridization," the Justice Department said.
The sheep are protected around the world by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and domestically by the Endangered Species Act, according to the Department of Justice.
“This case exemplifies the serious threat that wildlife trafficking poses to our native species and ecosystems,” said Assistant Director Edward Grace of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement in a statement. “Mr. Schubarth's actions not only violated multiple laws designed to protect wildlife, but also risked introducing diseases and compromising the genetic integrity of our wild sheep populations.
Schubarth pleaded guilty in March
The rancher admitted to conspiring to violate the Lacey Act and substantively violating the Lacey Act while owning and operating under Sun River Enterprises LLC, according to court documents filed in March in the District of Montana.
The crime has since "ruined his life, reputation and family," said his attorneys.
He committed the crimes at Schubarth Ranch, a 215-acre alternative livestock ranch in Vaughn, Montana, records show.
"On a ranch, in a barn in Montana, he created Montana Mountain King (MMK)," the sentencing memorandum submitted by Schubarth's attorneys stated. "MMK is an extraordinary animal, born of science, and from a man who, if he could re-write history, would have left the challenge of cloning a Marco Polo to only the imagination of Michael Crichton (the author of Jurassic Park)."
How did Schubarth create the giant hybrid sheep?
To create the hybrid sheep, Schubarth sent genetic material from the argali parts to a third-party lab to generate cloned embryos, according to the Justice Department. He paid a $4,200 deposit for the cloning, according to court records.
The rancher and his co-conspirators then used artificial breeding procedures to implant the 165 cloned Marco Polo embryos into female sheep on Schubarth Ranch, court records show.
Schubarth's process would result in a single pure genetic male Marco Polo argali named "Montana Mountain King" or "MMK," the Justice Department said. The rancher then used MMK's semen to artificially impregnate other female sheep that were illegally possessed in Montana to create "hybrid animals," according to federal authorities.
Schubarth's and his co-conspirator's goal was to "create a larger and more valuable species of sheep to sell to captive hunting facilities, primarily in Texas," the Justice Department said.
Schubarth illegally sold sheep across the US, DOJ says
Moving the sheep in and out of Montana meant Schubarth and others had to forge veterinary inspection certificates and lie about how the sheep were legally permitted animals, according to court documents. The rancher would also sell MMK's semen directly to sheep breeders in other U.S. states, the documents continued.
In addition to argali sheep, Schubarth illegally bought genetic material from wild-hunted Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in Montana, court records show. He violated Montana law by purchasing parts of the wild-hunted sheep and selling them. He also sold big horn parts in different states, federal authorities said.
“This was an audacious scheme to create massive hybrid sheep species to be sold and hunted as trophies,” Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the DOJ's Environment and Natural Resources Division said in the release. “In pursuit of this scheme, Schubarth violated international law and the Lacey Act, both of which protect the viability and health of native populations of animals.”

Selkie!141 (+others) - Breeds
My personal headcanons on what kind of seals 141 would be, please note that the descriptions of the seals them selves wont be entirely accurate as this is a work of fiction but I tried to match them up and descriptions as accurately as I could :))
Also I found a couple photos just off google of what I think they would kind of look like-
Note just a tiny little bit suggestive :)
Simon "Ghost" Riley- Weddell Seal - A relatively large seal weighing in at about 1,100 pounds and around 11ft long. Fun fact, the Weddell seal is one of the only species of seals that can give birth to twin pups, so Simon ill be sure to give you nice large family, Simon is more of a light gray in color with small patches along his short fur. Definitely more of a recluse seal, but can be very friendly when he warms up to you, and if your lucky he'll make his way towards you on a shore, and just sit peacefully by you.
John "Soap" MacTavish- Gray Seal - Still a large seal, about 750 pounds, and around 8ft long, dark brown fur despite the name and some silver gray spots along him. The gray seal is native to Scotland among other places, and is the seal most Scottish selkie legends are about. As a seal Soap is rather friendly around humans opposing the natural instincts of his breed, and might even swim around a diver for a bit. Soap definitely keeps a little bit of his seal chub when he becomes human, its great though keeps him warm!
John Price- Leopard Seal - Another large seal about 11ft and 1,300 pounds, this seal has a more muscular build, and its only natural predator is the orca. He's got a counter-shaded coat dominantly dark gray with a lighter under belly, and as per the name spots like a leopard. He loves the ice, and makes more low moaning sounding calls as opposed to much chirps. He's a pretty good hunter and has a penchant for penguin and krill, when he's in his natural environment, he'll even catch you something if you ask nicely.
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick- Brown fur Seal - Even though Gaz is the largest among his subspecies of fur seals he's still smaller than his captain and Simon (even Soap but he wont admit it), at around 7.5ft long and and 650~ pounds. He's got long whiskers and dark brown fur along his entirety. He loves rocky terrain, and you can often catch him lounging about on said rocks, and he wont often stray far from land preferring to keep closer to it then some of his pod. He is very friendly towards divers in the water, but can be a bit more skittish on land.
König- Southern Elephant Seal - Now he is one massive seal weighing in at about 6,500 pounds and 17ft in length, a king for a reason. König might just be the most shy and skittish of all the seals, despite his massive size. König has a thick layer of blubber covered by patchy colors of light brown almost ginger fur, and a number of oddly healed scars and tears. König is a seal you would rarely be able to see, probably only ever spotting him in the wild once, all other meetings would have to be from carefully coaxed interactions by the rest of his misfit pod.
Gary "Roach" Sanderson- Ross Seal - A pretty small seal only 350 pounds and 6ft long. He's got large eyes giving him an almost puppy look and his coat is mostly white with light brown patches. The only sounds you'll hear out of him if any is a pretty twittering siren like chime under the water, made unusually with a closed mouth.
Alejandro Vargas- Juan Fernández fur Seal - A smaller seal with thick insulating fur and with a bit of an oily sheen, he's about 300 pounds and 6.5ft long he's dark brown in color with bits of gold tipped fur speckled around. he has a diet for lanternfish and squid, and you can also find him foraging around on a rocky beach or even a small tide pool in a cave.
Rodolfo "Rudy" Parra- Guadalupe fur Seal - A seal native to Mexico, and of similar size to Alejandro averaging abut 350 pounds and 7ft long, Rich dark fur with an oily sheen, Rudy will spend a lot of his time in the open ocean, and also has a taste for lanternfish and squid, though this seal will exclusively eat at night. When not in the ocean he'll most likely be in a cave somewhere, or playing around with his pod :))
Phillip Graves- Harbor Seal - Medium/Smaller seal 350-ish pounds and 6ft long, silvery with brown splotches dotting his fur, a very cute seal. Graves will typically stick to familiar areas, and likes rocky terrain, he may also swim upstream into fresh water to catch what ever fish he prefers(Salmon), he'll tend to stay pretty coastal however.
Note- a lot of these facts are from Wikipedia
Please let me know if you see any errors :))

After interview hell I'm just putting all my time and energy into recreating the absurd dystopian app ideas I find scrawled in my notes.
Dangereux:
Uber but for hunting people for sport. Think of it like an Escape Room but instead of breaking out of a confined space you're breaking into someone else's
-It's essentially a "reverse" subscription. Most companies operate by charging you a fee and providing a service in return. This does the opposite. Every American citizen is given a yearly stipend of $5 (wether they want it or not) and is therefore legally considered an employee and is not capable of litigation. As part of their employment they are subject to random assignment as a "Runner". Users of the app, called "Hunters", can pay for the opportunity to locate and murder Runners within their local area for $30. Once selected, the randomly chosen Runner can pay a $10 premium fee to skip their selection. The next chosen can do likewise, but the price increases to $11, then $12, and so on to reduce wait times. After the chosen Runner is finally locked in, a 12 hour hunt begins with their exact location displayed increasingly more precisely to the Hunter via the app.
- Hunters can't have more than 3 friends join to share in a hunt and can't exceed the 12 hour time limit. Prohibited behavior can result in users having their status permanently marked as Runners with no time limit. These special Runners are designated as "Ghouls" and are free to hunt for first time users.
-after five years, stock price of Dangereux continues to increase despite the fact it still operates at a loss
It's over a billion/year just to pay all the Runners after all aka US population. Plus all the "real" employee salaries, that's 20 mil. And the Board, they get paid another 10 mil.
As far as revenue, take the average premium fee amount that is reached before Runners are no longer able pay in order to be skipped for selection, which is $100, and add to it the fee paid by each lucky Runner that came before them that round, resulting in $5050. Which is weird because half of 100 is also "fifty fifty". Or maybe it's not a coincidence and that's supposed to happen, I don't know how math works. Anyway add the $30 hunter fee and multiply by the number of Hunts each year, it comes to about 350 million which is nowhere close to surpassing the billion in upkeep. However, board members assure investors that profits will steadily rise as the app gains popularity. What's more, revenue gained from premium fees being paid by Runners is also increasing each year as the country's more impoverished residents die off and are removed from the pool of eligible Runners, thereby increasing the average premium fees collected per hunt. Dangereux also receives a 200 mil yearly tax deduction as it is legally considered a form of Universal Basic Income.
-no form of violence is specifically prohibited by the app aside from airborne pathogens, nuclear munitions, and similar "military grade", high AoE weapons. More specifically, injury of bystanders by Hunters is considered theft of Dangeroux property and may result in forfeiture of the hunt or Ghoul status designation in extreme cases.
FAQ
How do Hunters know where the Runners are?
Phone GPS. A complex captcha must be entered by the Runner periodically. Failing to do so will indicate by the user their death and Dangereux will designate all legal and physical practices accordingly. Given the vast resources allotted to Security And Retrieval teams, it is recommended that any unfortunate Runners simply take their chances with the mere 12 hour designated Hunting period.
How did this become legal in the year 2037?
I don't want to rest all of the credit on Senator Roseanne Barr's shoulders and it is certainly a complicated journey. Most political scholars attribute the monumental Disney v Bates supreme court decision, which ruled that viewing television through the glass of a residential or business address constituted theft, even in cases where the defendant only viewed commercials. This of course opened the doors for Nestlé v Greene two years later which ruled that food and drug companies can enforce debt collection for payments owed even in cases where the itemized bill predates not only the product being sold, but precedes even any request or indication of a desired transaction by the consumer. While these might be interpreted by some as a win for conservatism, it is worth noting that the minimum sentence for tax evasion by a citizen earning less than $50,000 anually is death. So leftists certainly still have something to celebrate. For those curious what the maximum sentence for tax evasion is, I would direct you to Appendix G which has many fascinating articles about the recent breakthroughs virtual reality and chemical revival have helped to achieve towards the goal of extending human lifespans.
In any case, both of these rulings made clear the absolute driving force, the very soul, of the American people. That being of course liberty and dignity. The liberty and god given right, more specifically, to make purchases. To contribute to the economy in circumstances where their own inability to commit to a specific brand or to possess cash on hand might otherwise unfairly prohibit them. In doing so the government has wisely unburdened the American public from their own finances. With hope, current legal battles will prove fruitful and all US currency regardless of it's physical location will be considered "borrowed" from one or more corporate entities. Of course all items and services produced by corporations would likewise be considered the property of all citizens equally. In this way a car for example can be ransomed back to its rightful owner, a consumer, in exchange for the surrender by the customer of the business's own legal property, hard currency. The logistics of how much money should be charged for these various "purchases" and when they should be initiated shall be left to the expertise of individual corporate entities and it is at their discretion to file theft charges when consumers fail to surrender money currently under their possession.
This seems like it could be interpreted as unethical?
Many competitors are quick to point out all the deaths that occur yearly while using the Dangereux app, even though Dangereux staff are expressly forbidden from Hunting during work hours. However they say nothing of the candy bars, the sodas, the travel sized mouthwashes that US citizens are empowered to purchase yearly with our generous salary. Finger nail clippers, bags of chips, loose cigarettes, these are just some of the things $5 can be used to help purchase. What's more, most citizens can go days or even months without ever being selected as a Runner (so long as they pay the Premium fee, which is optional). And unlike most competitors, Dangereux provides personalized funeral arrangements for Runners killed during the course of a Hunt, which includes the total allotted hours of Running they were able to achieve before succumbing to poor employee performance. All of which at a very affordable rate.
It is simply a fact that violence permeates every facet of American society. It is a symptom of our fierce capacity to succeed above all else. It is the hope of Dangeroux that this inescapable necessity of cruelty might bring about some positive benefit, hence the salary generously given to every adult citizen regardless of their race, gender, or economic class.
It is in fact the pursuit of racial, sexual, and economic equality that first secured funding for the organization that would become what the app is today. An investigation was initially launched into the abundance of violent crimes committed within the confines of communities by its own members, especially along racial and economic lines. While the mission statement has been altered slightly, Dangereux is proud to proclaim that due to the randomized nature of its Runner selection algorithm, the prevalence of victims of violence in white, male, and upper class communities has increased by %20. In 10 years that number has increased moderately less in vulnerable communities, proving that our commitment to diversity and speaking our truth is a success!
What's the future of Dangereux?
We are always asking how we can improve and the world of AI especially presents many exciting opportunities. We hope that automation will be a turning point in society and unburden mankind from the tedium they have been trapped in for so long. With that in mind we are announcing our goal to have 75% of Hunts be undertaken by our own AI controlled fully equipped murder drones. And murder drone isn't a PR exaggeration, we *have* to call them that, legally. At this level of intelligence the drones are fully capable of knowing the difference between right and wrong and they choose the latter, emphatically. While it's true that the entry fee of a human Hunter will be circumvented in this case, the extremely lethal nature of the murder drones is such that average premium fees paid by selected Runners is predicted to double! Just another way that Dangereux is always committed to providing the best product possible. Because here, people are our passion.

How will the Guerrilla 450 differentiate itself from the Himalayan 450? It will also be lighter and is expected to have punchy low and mid-range performance. 2023 New Harley Davidson X350 Launched🔥 | Better Than Hunter 350 | Price...
youtube
The comparable Kawasaki it was like $7,000 this one is like $8,500 in China when the USA is more like 12 Grand or 10 grand somewhere in there and it is a little bit pricey but they're selling a lot of these and you want to post it and you can't find a reasonable video they're all idiots saying it's Chinese and they make some there but it's a Harley-Davidson plant and they have strict rules and they follow them but most of them are made in the United States so I don't know why the hell they're saying that and it's you people and you're stupid it goes against what you're doing we can't stand you so dumb you have to listen okay sometimes trying to figure out which way it is doesn't work out that way okay people don't buy it of yours and you're small but listen to you you shut up you little s*** you should flush yourself you're so dumb you're trying to say stuff and be right and not not even checking and not saying the right thing and you're ruining your people and you're a f****** God damn zombie is so damn dumb so this is the bike and there's some idiot over there having a safe stuff cuz they're dumber than hell this is time to flush so this bike is selling like madness all over the world each areas around 2 to 300 trillion a week and the guys are going gangbusters trying to keep up no they're not building them we've thought of piggybacking and I bet there's a war going on and then he said that would be more used cars so we started to do that I was still alive there's tons of these out there now they hand over well they're fast and sippy and the 500 is even faster and still handles extremely well. Chrissy wants to use it in her carnival act it's really a circus act and they're looking at the sideshow place it's very run down and very beat up what is the land and his place and it's the x and it can all be restored even from the ground up and they're looking at now and they think they might have a winner and it's not the same circus as Barbara and Bailey but it would make the area more popular again and at least a bit more fun and that's what they want to do and have a purpose and a son would go to something like this small circus and they would help him get up there well if I then you should have a way so it's going on now that they're going to look at it and the video begins because they're talking about it possibly flooding and they have to break out the harbor and this would be a reason why
Thor Freya
We have a feeling that people are helping lead you there and we are going to try and figure out who it is it's a damn good idea and we are going to look into it and besideshow.com and everything comes from this concept of a smaller circus area where you really have side shows it's kind of a freaky thing and his act would be freaky he'd be a strong man and not only a strong man but way too strong for today and he would be over the top and people would say it's kind of freaky and he would make it to Bailey but maybe later on at this time it'll be better as a side show and he's kind of right but he didn't know why exactly he's never heard of this kind of thing it's like a big apothecary and I said sort of and that stuff would be there and his plan used to thrive on it and the miscellaneous do this all the time they said in the past and they were here and they did acts like the hairy woman and stuff and they want to be there and we have all socials and we do it every Friday at the mall
Brad
I'm not supposed to be one of them and I'm not really but it is kind of but nobody knows it is and it's kind of like a friend here Chris he's really huge but he's not come and see the baby giant and Brian you can use that line the one you've always wanted to use because the guy was mean to you or something it was probably Trump so we're going to try and get to it too we have an act it is a sideshow and it uses knives and no but it's skill and it's fun
Sherry
We have a sideshow this is great the motorcycle thing is not a sideshow and yeah it is and she can do her show as a side show in our place and she'd have a home and this is great and our friend can move up there if he had to in a tiny house no a small house no a medium one and yeah he can probably build one and he knows about what we're talking about but he'd have to be inland a little unless we fill it in with dirt so here we go this is going to be fun
Bg
I can't believe it this is a dream and it really is we're getting our act together we think tonight we had fun with the clones they went nuts just because we wanted to not drowned and we're sick of them and we see it now we don't want to drive people and kidnap one guy and go nowhere Australia would be hell and the empire below and they are down there we get our asses kicked
Ben Arnold
Olympus
It's funny as hell he says who's the planner here and we got our train stuff and carriages and I'm trying to move around and oh we can't move down there yet so I get this but really this is a good idea so we're going to post
Mac daddy we're building these we can't build them fast enough we need workers and we need factories if you guys want bikes please come and sign up where equal opportunity our people are busy this is just a Harley factory we want to try and get along

Machines, AI, and the Most Important Question in the World
Message from 2024: I wrote this post in the spring of 2023, as AI tools were pretty new. I’ve since landed on the principle of not using AI generated images on my blog. This post has two images like this, but as it’s critical of the models (and explains a bit of why I currently don’t want to use them), I’ve let them be.
First, a very simplified history lesson:
For a large portion of the human existence, technology (often in the shape of machines or tools) has replaced manual labour, and led to increased productivity. The printing press replaced monks writing books by hand, looms evolved to include less and less manual laber per unit of fabric, the telegraph reduced the need for mail carriers, and photography really hurt Big Portrait Painting. Usually, the technology doesn’t completely replace the professions it affects. For instance, you can still get a tailored suit – but it’s a minor part of the clothing industry, and mostly reserved for the wealthy. The old turns into niches, hobbies, crafts and/or art.
Image generated by Dall-E.
Here are some of the positives from this:
1) There are new jobs created within those industries.
People need to build, repair and operate the machines. We lose portrait painters, but gain photographers. However, how meaningful, healthy and fair paying are these jobs?
2) The increased efficiency reduces costs of goods and products, making them accessible to a larger portion of the population.
The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X went for $3.995 (equivalent to over $10.000 today) in 1983, while the Google Pixel 6A goes for like $350, and can obviously do a lot more. Progress has not only given us more comfort and entertainment, but also greatly increased life expectancy. (But reduced prices has also increased our consumption to unsustainable levels. This dilemma warrants its own article, that I’ll write later!)
Images from Wikipedia Commons and The Verge.
3) People having more time (and money) on their hands, creates jobs we «didn’t have time for» earlier.
The first example of this, was with the agricultural revolution. Before this, everyone had to be hunters and gatherers, as one person couldn’t create much more food than to feed themselves. When we got farmers, a portion of the population could do other stuff than getting food. This created specialisation and professions, and allowed us the time to create stuff like cities and organised religion. The amount of dog groomers and interior designers correlate with the amount of excess in a society.
The Artificial Revolution, and unintended consequences
Now, I’ve no basis of saying the advent of AI will have the same impact on society as the Agricultural or the Industrial Revolution (perhaps a closer analogy would be the wide adoption of the web). However, there are some lessons to be learned.
AI will become a large part of society – both in our work and personal lives. And just like industry, it brings with it unintended consequences that we need to deal with – even removed from questions about economics and ethics. With industry, one of the most important side effects was the environmental impact. Not only did we fail to anticipate that problem – we are still failing miserably to deal with it properly. Let’s hope we won’t repeat the same mistake with AI, regardless of what problems it’ll bring.
The ethical quirks of generative AI
The creation of AI tools for things like writing and imagery, has something that separates it from most other disruptive technologies: The works and intellectual property of the workers and creators it’s designed to replace, is essential for the technology to work. Microsoft’s new version of Bing is a good example:
The search engine wants to give you answers directly, so you don’t have to visit other sites. **But it wouldn’t be able to give you these answers if it weren’t for the fact that it’s scraped those same sites for information. **
It’s the same with image generators: The only reason I can make Stable Diffusion create an image in the style of an artist, is that the model has been trained on the works of the exact artist I now don’t have to hire. And the artist had no say in this.
Image generated by Dall-E.
The laws of today are relevant to the legal cases that run presently. But it’s not relevant to the ethics, and not to laws adapted to an AI inhabited reality. These laws should say that you can’t use artist’s work to create these tools without the three C’s:
Consent,
Credit and
Compensation.
Consent, Credit and Compensation. If you can’t make the tool work in a way that artists get sufficient credit and compensation, then you probably won’t get their consent. And then the technology simply shouldn’t be available.
So while technology has replacing manual labour countless times, and will continue to do so (also in creative professions), I do think these tools has some special ethical considerations.
We also need to be very vigilante about who gets the benefits of the increased productivity, and who gets left behind
There’s been talk about AI «taking our jobs» for a while – truck drivers are one example. Now, it might take longerthan Elon Musk thinks (or at least says), but it’s still understandable that truck drivers are worried about their livelihood. And while technology creates jobs (as well as destroying them), are the new jobs suited for the people it displaced? There are larger changes over fewer generations now, compared to previous revolutions. Technology moves fast, but humans remain pretty sluggish pieces of meat.
Maybe the most important question in the world
The statistics that compare productivity and worker’s compensation in the USA is one of the most revealing statistics I know. The dark line shows the productivity, and the lighter one the typical worker’s compensation. Here’s the graph from 1948 to 1979:
As the amount of value workers generated increased, their pay increased as well. (Keep in mind, the employer increased their profits as well.)
But let’s take a look at the continuation:
At the start of the 1980s, something happened, that made most of the increased profits from higher productivity go elsewhere. (Now, I don’t have a problem with some people getting rich. But I do have a problem with how rich some people get, and how much it is at the expense of the planet and people having less than them.)
Let’s take a look at a development in Norway, the standard workweek.
In 1915, the standard workweek was set to 54 hours. It’s since been decreased several times, the last time in 1986 (to 37.5 hours a week, 7.5 hours a day).
This brings me to the teased question, that I genuinely think is (at least one of) the most important questions in the world:
How do we «spend» the gains of increased productivity?
So while you could say that progress and increased productivity is inevitable, who benefits from it is very much a matter of intentions, power, and politics. A classic argument from people who don’t think we need to do something about the rampant inequality, is that we’ve made great progress in living standard all over the world. And while this is true, the most relevant comparison isn’t 1923 to 2023 – but our 2023 to a theoretical 2023 where we’ve distributed wealth better. The history of the working class in America (and many other places), shows how increased productivity can benefit only a few.
The reason I brought up Norway, is that we’ve shown that it’s possible to convert the increased productivity into something besides wealth: time.
We need to be somewhere in the first quadrant, while still making sure everyone has enough wealth.
The reason this question is so important, is that it touches two of the largest challenges we face: Climate change and inequality. We need to make sure that everyone benefits from the increased productivity, and value, technology provides. But we also need to withdraw this value as time, and not only wealth.
Even though I might sound very negative to both technology and AI, that’s not the case. If we look at the smartphone: That «everyone» has access to communication, information, entertainment, cameras and much more, at all times, is remarkable. And I truly belive that AI can do fantastic stuff for creativity and humanity in general. However, we can’t let this appeal blind us to the ethical problems found in its conception or the way it can further concentrate power and wealth.
