🐬Daily Cetacean Fact:🐬
Atlantic Humpback Dolphin: This species is native to the tropical to subtropical west coast of Africa in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean, from western Sahara to Angola. The species is not commonly observed and is found sporadically across these waters. This species is known to be shy; it does not bow-ride and aerial displays are rarely seen. They occasionally leap, spy-hop, and tail-slap the water. Atlantic humpback dolphins prefer to keep a distance from boat engines, and when they are seen in the water, they are most likely traveling and foraging.

Mermay Special Prompt 4
Go on vacation, they said. We can watch Gotham, they said. Just go hang with and adjust to caring for kids, they said. Yeah, well no one said anything about getting cursed while at the vacation lake house, which okay, fine. But did it have to affect the kids too?
Bruce pressed his head in his hands, groaning in dismay as the children practically zoomed around the surrounding water with enthusiastic trills and squeals he could somehow understand. And through the air, to their increasing delight. Okay. Okay this is fine.
It wasn’t like he also somehow now had an extra child who looked like one at most that he had no clue as to where they came from. Said child wasn’t squirming in his arms, black scales and tiny fins akin to the setting of a sun twisting as they chirped. Definitely not.
Okay. Alright. He could figure this out. Probably…. hopefully…

Why is the ocean so pretty? When the waves clash against the ocean and there is a light blue splash from the impact. It’s so shimmery and beautiful. Also the aesthetic of the ocean is so beautiful and cool. Jellyfish, purple, pink, blue, cute otters and whales. Pinch me 🤧

2023: The annual trip up to Treachery Headland this year gave us precious little surf but we had the most glorious weather to observe all the many, many cetaceans. The drone facilitated a great shot showing the folded Carboniferous turbidites making up the headland.

So we didnt see any orcas yesterday (there’s never any guarantee, they’re wild animals after all) but we saw SO MANY humpback whales. And some sea otters and risso’s dolphins. There was one humpback whale that we stopped and watched for about 40 minutes because it kept doing surface activities. It was clearly having a blast. At one point it breeched so close to our boat that anyone at the railing got splashed.
Anyways, my husband didn’t bring his camera so we bought the photo package, here are some of the photos from it. Photographer is Daniel Bianchetta.
