Sorry but I’m gonna support the Disney wish movie.
I’m rooting for everyone black.
More Wish, less Frozen 3 & 4
So I want to make it clear that despite the tone of my post, you do not have to not Boycott this film if you want to support original content and black representation. This is an important cause for people and it doesn’t make you suddenly anti-Palestinian or Pro-Genocide to see a single motion picture. You are the only one who knows your own morals. I don’t want it to seem as if I was condemning black people from supporting a film they are experiencing representation in/placing an balance-scale style comparison between the struggles of POC in the world and Palestinians. I fight against the notion some have online that the matter of seeing Wish is just someone “succumbing to capitalism” or “being weak.” It has been seen before how the lack of monetary achievements for minority lead films discredits that representation further. Why do we think it has taken this long for another mainline black Princess after Princess and the Frog? It’s not rocket science here.
It is not my place as a non-Palestinian to say if you are allowed to see this movie. That is a choice you can make after looking at the information. But it should also not be my place to shame people into supporting the movement either. Especially because of the complicated nature of this specific issue. I tried to rewrite this to be more clear in my initial post but for the sake of brevity I didn’t make this point more clear and that’s my fault. I’m going to go in more depth about why I am personally choosing to be so Anti-Disney with my Boycott but I want to make things crystal clear before the cut,
Disney is not an official Boycott target by the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Movement(BDS). Disney is a Pressure Target technically not Boycotted but is complicit in Israel's apartheid behavior.
The targets they are listing consumers to Boycott monetarily are:
Siemen
PUMA
Carrefour
AXA
Hewlett Packard Inc (HP Inc)
SodaStream
Ahava
RE/MAX
Israeli produce in your supermarkets
Now, more details about all of that.
So there are two Boycotts currently being implemented against Disney on different fronts.
A joint one with Starbucks, McDonalds, and Disney that seems to have started independently of the. I anecdotally remember there being posts around the week after the first October 7th event. This seemed to be driven mostly by the three companies being
large companies which will notice the impact on their stock going down as an impact of the Pro-Palestine public.
They in some way have publicly Pro-Israel in their support with little acknowledgement for Palestine. And I’m using ‘little’ generously here.
Starbucks Sources for this:
https://www.arabnews.com/node/281313
Above is a fantastic article that looks critically at these claims. And below is one that shows the trend of Starbucks over the years to keep the support their CEO has for the Apartheid hidden.
McDonald Sources
Giving food and support to Israel and nothing to Palestine.
An article detailing the action Starbucks had against its union for posting Pro-Palestine statements, the Meals already discussed, and how McDonalds is trying to just throw humanitarian money at the issue to save face.
But now the main stay of the post.
Initially Disney was joined for this independent three way Boycott because it was a larger media company. More recently they gave 2 million in Humanitarian Aid to Israel.
I don’t want disinformation to spread this is humanitarian aid, yes, but it is only for Israel. Not Palestine. Not the people of Gaza that are being subjected to war crimes. Supporting just the apartheid state and not Palestine is the problem here. Disney is still showing their cards of what they’re supporting.
Now, what about the BDS?
The BDS is responsible for the second Disney Boycott. What is the BDS? The majority of this next section is going to come directly from the BDS website which I recommend people check out for future Boycotts.
BDS stands for Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions and is one of the largest Palestinian-led movements for organizing for spreading awareness. They weaponize these main three types of non-violent pressure to discourage the support corporations have under capitalism for Israel.
Now, how is the BDS treatment of Disney different than the three way McDonalds, Starbucks, Disney Boycott?
Firstly, they in support for the monetary boycott of just McDonalds. Starbucks is not listed on their updated list and specifically with McDonalds they had this to say,
Further with regard to Disney it sees it as a Pressure-Target and not a monetary one.
What’s a Pressure-Target Boycott?
Boycotts cannot target everyone all the time, which is why sometimes Boycotts split up their targets into groups to not make the process seem to daunting.
The BDS points out a Pressure-Target as,
This pressure could come through social media, emails sent to the company, or petitions.
Under this cut I am going to be posting such links to some petitions I think are productive here.
Why is Disney being targeted as Pressure-Target?
This is Sabra, an Israeli hero from the 1981 who has an extensive plot involving her as an Israeli and the Palestine suppress-oops I meant ‘War’(tell that to anyone believing this started only a few years ago).
Quoting this CNN article of what her first comic was,
The classic 1981 Marvel comic page shows the giant green Hulk, tears streaming down his face as he yells at Sabra, an Israeli superhero and agent of the country's Mossad spy agency. The corpse of a young Palestinian boy, killed in an explosion by apparently Arab "terrorists" at his feet.
"Boy died because boy's people and yours both want to own land! Boy died because you wouldn't share!" the Hulk says.
A few panels later, the woman in the white and blue costume with a Star of David on her chest kneels next to the boy. “
It has taken the Hulk to make her see this dead Arab boy as a human being," the comic says. "It has taken a monster to awaken her own sense of humanity."
It is not my right to speak if this is tone-deaf or not. There are quotes in the article that support this notion but it’s not my place.
Now, why is she important?
Disney is looking to reuse this character for the upcoming Captain America film. This is why it’s considered a Pressure-Target. The BDS lists the problems with this representation down below. They are calling not for Boycotts of films but for online pressure to have this Israeli propaganda dismantled.
Something not brought up here is that releasing a character with the name of Sabra after the more than a thousand Palestinian and Lebanese Shiite people were massacred. Especially with a planned release date of a week after the incident is in poor taste, even if the name had other contexts surrounding it.
So, do I see Wish?
This is not an easy answer I can give you. This is something you need to come to terms with and also understand, this is no ‘correct’ way to Boycott a business. In my post I strategically underplayed this point to keep the message brief. But as we just saw here, there are two different valid methods of Boycotts against Disney.
If you are choosing to not monetarily give Disney money that is valid with a Boycott.
If you are seeing the movie but giving pressure by @ing Disney’s social media, signing letters, and petitions you are valid with a Boycott.
Both people I presented here are Boycotting against Israel's apartheid. There isn’t a correct form of activism and it was my fault to imply that so extremely before. I am choosing not to see Wish because of looking around at all the Western propaganda around this. Walking through the walls of what I considered a liberal school to saw Israel flags supporting the apartheid state.
But that is my choice.
It doesn’t have to be your non-violent protest journey. Do what you think is right with the information you have. Stay educated, don’t let disinformation spread.
And have a good day/afternoon/night everyone.

The US planning $61 million in munitions meant to kill Palestinians, via Canada
The United States government announced this week that a Quebec-based company will be the principal contractor in a “possible” $61-million US sale of high explosive mortar cartridges and related equipment to Israel.
That's half of what Trudeau is pledging on World Humanitarian Day...
Montreal, August 15, 2024 — Peace groups are condemning the proposed transfer of $83.7M worth of explosives to the Israeli military, which they warn will fuel Israel’s genocidal violence against civilians in Gaza. As part of this week’s $20B weapons package to Israel, the US Congress approved the purchase of 50,000 High Explosive Mortar Cartridges worth $83.7M CAD ($61.1M USD) from General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc., located in Quebec.

say more asoif/succession AU HCs
this au is so insanely funny to me because like. so little would fundamentally have to change for the au to work! if you added ice zombies in the arctic to succession, it would become asoiaf. if you transplanted the characters in king’s landing from a medieval empire to modern-day corporate america, it would be succession. a snake eating its own tail, narratively.
ANYWAY here are the stark kids in the asoiaf/succession au. they’re not the main characters of the au because it needs the protags to be fundamentally bad people with bad intentions and sympathetic motivations. the starks are well-meaning rich people! that still gets dicey! but only the lannisters can encapsulate the raw fail energy and nauseating privilege of the roy kids.
robb: set to inherit the starks’ company, which is owned by king’s landing inc, a massive media conglomerate akin to disney. instead of going to war, he goes to soooo many board meetings. realistically he probably needs to be like 27 for the au to work (just graduated with his mba, idealistic and fresh-faced,) but it would be so funny if he was still 14 years old.
jon: joins the military to prove himself to ned and forge his own identity. is sent to northern iceland. finds ice zombies. gets disillusioned about the military and forms his own coalition against the ice zombies. he still has terminal main character disease. he just wants to count how many MREs and flare guns they have left.
sansa: i think sansa had all these dreams of girlbossing her way to the top as a humanitarian, forward-thinking High Society Figure. running a lot of charity orgs, being on nonprofit board. but she still has the mindset and judgments of the 1%, and it’s not until she works as an intern in King’s Landing Inc that her world expands. then her dad gets murdered. now she’s going to girlboss her way into a better future for everyone, whether everyone’s ready or not.
arya: she’s like if one of the roy kids genuinely wanted to destroy the roy family (the Roy Family being king’s landing inc.) she works covertly—she can put on the right costumes for a king’s landing ball, but she’s also exposing cersei’s embezzlement scheme. she’s pulling an ocean’s eight with gendry (working as waitstaff) and hot pie (hacking offsite from arya’s kitchen.) she also has some Nepo Baby Disease and isn’t always as self aware as she wants to be. cue character arc!
bran: his story also remains the same. jaime pushes him out of a window after witnessing him and cersei. years later, he goes to college and realizes the weirwood network still exists. has to hide out in arya’s apartment when the lannisters try to have him killed for that bc a magical tree spy network would drive stock prices down.
rickon: sells ecstasy to his classmates’ parents at his private high school

The Slow Fashion Movement (Week 6)
The fashion industry is one of the most significant sources of pollution (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-1), from the rapid rate at which clothing is produced to how quickly it is disposed of. This is emblematic of the broader issue with fast fashion: its prioritisation of consumerism over ethics, which has become increasingly detrimental not only in pollution, but also notably in carbon emission, landfill (cheap synthetic materials) and poor working conditions (sweatshops).
‘The goal of fast fashion companies is to produce the most amount of fashionable and trendy apparel in the shortest amount of time, so consumers can keep up with the fast and ever-changing trend cycles and want to consume more products’ (Mehrjoo & Pasek cited in Chi et al. 2021, p. 101).
To counter this, the slow fashion movement has been gaining traction. Slow fashion refers to the ‘change in core values in the fashion industry’ (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-1) to be more sustainable. This is evident through the idea of Corporate Social Responsibility, in which companies ‘help modify behaviour by raising awareness and generating consumer pressure on other companies to follow the higher ethical standards’ (Brewer 2019, 1902-6). For instance, The Common Good Company has a portion of their website dedicated to sustainability, and backs it up with verifiable evidence.
The discussion surrounding sustainability largely takes place online between digital citizens. This includes Corporate Social Responsibility as well as consumers who tend to emphasise the ‘humanitarian’ (Ladstatter 2019) aspect of slow fashion, as they are aware of the consequences of fast fashion. Special focus is placed on the quality and timelessness of their clothing purchases, in an attempt to ensure that the clothes that these consumers do buy will be sufficiently worn and used. A topical way this is addressed is through the ‘thrifting’ trend in youth culture, as clothes are given another chance to be used instead of ending up in landfills. Furthermore, finding long-lasting, quality ‘vintage’ clothing is heralded, as these pieces are often unique—and thus more valuable (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-9).
Hopefully, the awareness surrounding fast fashion and the subsequent push for slow fashion will create a higher standard of ethics for clothing production.

What Happened on September 13 in History?
Grand Assault on Gibraltar (1782)
On September 13, 1782, the Grand Assault on Gibraltar, a significant military engagement during the American Revolutionary War, took place. This assault was part of the larger effort by the allied French and Spanish forces to capture Gibraltar from the British. The attack involved a combined fleet of French and Spanish ships, ten floating batteries, and substantial land forces.
Despite the overwhelming numbers and resources of the allied forces, the British garrison, under the command of General George Elliot, successfully repelled the assault. The floating batteries, which were a key component of the attack, were destroyed, and the allies suffered significant casualties, with 1,473 reported compared to only 83 British losses. The failed assault marked a crucial turning point in the siege and solidified British control over Gibraltar for the remainder of the conflict.

Primo de Rivera’s regime was characterized by a focus on modernization and economic reform, but it also faced significant opposition and criticism. On World Humanitarian Day, the EU and its member states should consider addressing the double standards that put humanitarian workers at increased risk, writes Jean-Yves Terlinden. Jean-Yves Terlinden is Caritas Europa International Development and Humanitarian Director. 2024 is on track to be the deadliest year for humanitarian workers on record, particularly for those based in their own countries. -Already, 192 humanitarian workers have been killed, of whom 119 were local staff, and the year is far from over. This is in contrast to the 118 humanitarian workers who lost their lives in 2022. This dramatic increase in the number of fatalities is overwhelmingly made up of those killed in Gaza since October 2023, a total of at least 274 in the last ten months. Indeed, the number who have lost their lives in the last ten months in Gaza alone is higher than the total deaths of humanitarian workers around the world, in the two years between 2021 and 2022. The continued complicity of the EU and US in violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), double standards, and the increasing politicisation of humanitarian support, is fuelling this growing death count. Caritas, a global network of 162 national relief and development organisations, has tragically lost two national workers in Gaza Viola, a lab technician, age 26, was killed with her husband and infant daughter, and Issam Abedrabbo, a dedicated pharmacist and father, age 35, was killed with two of his sons, leaving one daughter an orphan. On World Humanitarian Day, we honour their lives and their tireless service to others and mourn the loss of their lives, that was cut short far too soon. We continue the work they started in the hope of creating a better, more just world, where all people can thrive in peace, dignity, and hope. These deaths are far from accidental. Israeli forces have reportedly carried out at least eight strikes on humanitarian workers’ convoys and premises in Gaza since October 2023. These attacks occurred even though humanitarian agencies had provided their coordinates to the Israeli authorities, to ensure their protection. The attack in October of the St. Porphyrios Orthodox Church in Gaza, where it was made known that civilians were sheltering, resulted in the death of Caritas staff member Viola and her family. This unprecedented loss of humanitarian workers has been compounded by a humanitarian system increasingly affected by political priorities. The EU and US continue to provide military support to Israel, including bombs that have resulted in the deaths of civilians and humanitarians in staggering numbers, as well as other forms of material support, such as projects that fund Israeli arms companies. To live up to their values as principled humanitarian actors and to avoid being complicit in IHL violations, the EU and its member states must fully divest from military support to actors who violate IHL. Without this divestment, humanitarian diplomacy will continue to be undermined by states that, on the one hand, condemn violations of IHL and, on the other, provide military and economic support to parties that perpetrate these IHL violations.

Martinez, Johnson, Gregory-O'Connell to be Honored at 44th Annual Thurman Munson Awards March 14
Two hard-hitting World Series champions and a Bronx basketball trailblazer enshrined in three Halls of Fame will be honored by AHRC New York City Foundation when they are presented with Thurman Munson Awards at the 44th annual benefit on Thursday night, March 14 at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers (23rd Street at West Side Highway) in New York City: Four-time New York Yankees World Series champion first baseman Tino Martinez (1996, 1998-2000), 1986 Mets World Series champion third baseman Howard Johnson and Fordham University women’s hoops pioneer and New York City Basketball Hall of Famer Anne Gregory-O’Connell will each receive “Thurmans” as members of the “Class of 2024.”
The Munson Awards are presented to individuals for on-field excellence, and the betterment of sports and community. The AHRC NYC benefit has helped to keep the memory of the legendary Yankees catcher and captain Thurman Munson alive since his tragic passing 44 years ago, while raising more than $21 million for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead richer, more productive lives.
Robert Scheinman, Principal, J.T. Magen & Company, Inc., will receive the M. Anthony Fisher Humanitarian Award.
Thurman's widow Diana Munson is an honorary chair who has supported AHRC NYC and its fund-raising efforts through the Thurman Munson Awards for four decades.
The 2024 benefit will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of AHRC NYC.
The Master of Ceremonies will be FOX 5 lead sports anchor and Sports Extra host Tina Cervasio.
Special guests expected to attend include Football Giants Super Bowl champions Harry Carson, Ottis Anderson, Chris Canty and Karl Nelson; Yankees World Series Champion Jeff Nelson; four-time Islanders Stanley Cup Champions Butch Goring and John Tonelli, former Mets pitcher Nelson Figueroa, NY/NJ Gotham FC soccer midfielder McCall Zerboni, SiriusXM Radio host Ed Randall and New York radio/television personality Sweeny Murti of MLB.com, with others to be announced.
Martinez, whose plaque installed in the Stadium’s Monument Park underline his Yankees legacy, was an integral member of four Bombers World Championship teams in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. During a 16-year major league career, Tino knocked in 1,271 runs on the strength of 1,925 hits and 339 home runs. The two-time All-Star had more than 100 RBI in six different seasons and led the American League in homeruns (44) and RBI (141) in 1997.
His two most memorable World Series home runs were a Grand Slam in Game 1 in 1998 to give the Yankees the lead and the win against the Padres; and then in 2001 against the Diamondbacks. With the Yankees down to their last out, Martinez launched a game-tying, ninth inning home run in Game 4 and the Yankees went on to win in the 10th.
Like Thurman, Martinez starred in the Cape Cod League early in his career (1986), and last summer returned to serve as an assistant coach for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The Tampa native was a standout in college at the University of Tampa as a three-time All-American.
Johnson was a Tigers product who debuted in 1982 and was a member of Detroit’s 1984 championship team. He was traded to the Mets following that season and two years later went on to win his second World Series in 1986. With the Mets, Hojo was a two-time All-Star and led the National League in both home runs (38) and RBI (117) in 1991. Johnson still ranks third on the Mets’ all-time list for homers (192), RBI (629), doubles, and stolen bases (202).
Inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame earlier this year, Hojo is a three-time member of the “30-30 Club” (1987, 1989 and 1991) all in New York, and set the record for most home runs (36) by a switch hitter in 1987.
During his 14-year career, Johnson drove in 760 runs totaling 1,229 hits, 228 home runs and 231 stolen bases.
Gregory-O’Connell scored 2,548 points and pulled down 1,999 rebounds during a storied Fordham career from 1976-80. She is enshrined in the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame as the first female inductee in 1986, the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame (2017) and the Bronx Basketball Hall of Fame (2023). In 2023, in a celebration of Title IX’s 50th Anniversary, she was recognized for her contributions in spearheading the growth of women’s sports as an Atlantic 10 “Trailblazer’ by the conference for “paving the way for thousands of girls and women to participate in and be successful in sports and life.” Anne’s number is the only number of a women’s player retired by her alma mater (2009), and #55 hangs from the rafters at the Rose Hill Gymnasium on the Fordham campus.
The women’s basketball pioneer is a New York product from The Bronx, New York. A stone’s throw from Yankee Stadium, Anne Gregory was a dominant force on the Fordham University women’s basketball team from 1976-80, long before women’s basketball took off as part of mainstream sports. The rebounds total stood as a record in women’s basketball until 2009. Anne graduated cum laude from Fordham with a degree in sociology in 1980.
She was one of seven children who grew up in the Parkchester section of the Bronx and is a product of Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, New York. She played professionally briefly in France following her Fordham career.
Anne’s late husband was the beloved Hall of Fame college basketball writer Jim O’Connell, whom she met as a Fordham student when “Oc” was the university’s Sports Information Director.
Always giving young people direction during 36 years in Catholic School education, Anne’s post-basketball career included 20 years as guidance counselor at Holy Trinity High School, 12 years at Aquinas High School, and two years at Cardinal Spellman; Anne began that career at a physical education teacher and basketball coach at St. Helena Commercial High School.
The list of previous Thurman Munson Award recipients reads like a “Who’s Who” of sports stars including: Muhammad Ali, Arthur Ashe, Yogi Berra, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Joe Torre, Bernie Williams, Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza, Gary Carter, David Wright, Willis Reed, Patrick Ewing, Julius Erving, Jim Brown, Harry Carson, Aly Raisman, Nancy Lieberman, Theresa Weatherspoon, and Mark Messier, just to name a few.
Founded 75 years ago, AHRC New York City is a family governed organization that is fiercely committed to achieving equity for people who are neurodiverse in New York City.
