Okay, so I’ve been thinking about the suffragette song from the end of episode 2, because it really struck me as a wasted potential. Because while it starts as an educational song, it then evolves into one about cartoons lacking the right to vote.
And while I appreciate what they were going for, using “toons” as a blank term for any oppressed group who lacks representation, I think it was a really wasted potential for something bigger.
First an foremost, this is where the (almost) complete lack of any supporting cast of Animaniacs really shows. Because instead of them, we go and visit Looney Tunes, Flinstones, Hannah Barbera characters etc (and there is, admittedly, hilarious jab at Loonatics Unleashed). And it feels... cheap to me. And don’t get me wrong, OG Animaniacs sometimes used those properties too, but this struck me as some sort of attempt to make a demo reel for hulu to fund more shows, honestly.
Here’s my counter-proposal, how the episode could go:
It starts off the same, with Dot explaining it’s the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote, she shows the real-life leaders, etc, and then she tells us the “real story” of how those marches began.... and we cut to....
SLAPPY THE SQUIRREL,
who, let’s face it, is eternal, and would be already old in 1920s. She’s on some farmer’s market, and sees a stand where a dude has a sale on nuts, and needs his customers to decide which one will be on sale today. Slappy says that “she votes for hazelnuts!” or something, and he shuts her saying she has no right to vote, and that the rest of customers chose pistachios, which she hates.
And that makes her snap and she goes fucking ballistic on him.
Once she beats him up, she climbs on the barricades made of the stalls, starts banging the pots, and calling all the housewives around to “Rise up, because no man will tell us if we want nuts!”
And she goes home and starts calling her friends, which could be a great lesson on how the invention of telephone has given women freedom of discussion (since until then, they had to use mail, and in case of young women they had to often send through servants in rich houses, etc). and it turns out that she was the first domino that started the whole march.
We could revisit Rita and Runt, a duo, who are singing partners, and supposed to be in balance, yet the lack of rights ruins said balance, or the Hippos, who do show the same message, but through dance, etc. And Hello Nurse! I’d love to see her - which, let’s face it, was highly sexualised character - to stand up for women’s rights.
Because how funny would it be for Slappy, a cranky, selfish and generally uncaring character to be the reason for such progressive and selfless act?
And of course the episode would end with Slappy revisiting the nut merchant (who is in crutches, of course), who goes on their knees and tells her she can have anything she wants, because it’s her choice.
And she says she wants a pound of pistachios, and he faints.
Wouldn’t that be funnier?!
Again, I see where they were going with it, and if that song helps young viewers fight for their rights, I would be eternally happy. But at the same time, I felt the payoff was way too weak, for Animaniacs, at least.

Okay so I finally got access to Hulu and am slowly going through the new Animaniacs while reading up on some of the history and... I don’t get the criticism I hear?
I mostly hear three of them:
1) The original creator needs to come back!
Okay first off, Animaniacs was always a group project headed by Steven Spielberg. Originally, they were going to be ducks, until Steven said no. Then there were going to be four of them, but it was decided that was too much and two characters combined to make Wakko. Throughout production, Spielberg would always be extremely hands on (it had HIS name on it), so I wouldn’t say Tom Rugger was the SOLE CREATOR of this series. He’s like... Ub Iwerks to Walt Disney for this one.
Secondly, IT’S BEEN 22 YEARS, and Rugger hasn’t been up to much since his days at the WB (he did some Snow White spin-off for Disney XD and a few cameo & writer jobs, but that seems to be it?) People change, and Warner bros shares ownership of the series with Amblin. OF COURSE they want to make sure a group is heading it that serves both companies best interests. I would also ask him to submit a script or pitch to show his humor would still be relevant with today’s audience. Also he does have a cameo in the new series. I honestly feel the fan base demanding his return is more upset about this than he is.
2) Hello Nurse should have been the CEO!
This is continuing the Tom Rugger critique, because people are mostly saying this because he commented that’s what he would do, but..... what would be the joke? How would that work?
The original Animaniacs and their treatment by Plotz was a joke based on how film studios used to own their actors. Actors couldn’t just go to another studio, unless the studio that employed them rented them out (this was a thing). The Animaniacs live in this environment to justify being chaotic- audiences can justify kids acting out the most when they’re being blatantly disrespected.
The New CEO gives 0 fucks and seems to be a few wires short of a circuit board, which makes sense for modern times, and allows for her to be selfish enough to keep the studio afloat while making dumb mistakes that will blow up in her face (the bun episode)
Every character in Animaniacs is an asshole. That’s the joke. The audience has a good time watching the Warners wreak havoc because everyone around them is an asshole. Making Hellow Nurse the CEO would force the writers to make one of two choices for her character:
1) Turn her into an asshole (and the audience riots)
2) Give her 0 power and the joke is that she’s TRYING to clean up the studio but nothings working and now she cries oceans at any sign of stress (and the audience riots)
Aside from the fact her being a nurse with her IQ and degrees indicates that her love is in the medical field, keeping her character from the 90’s and making her CEO would be insanely boring, considering that her biggest strength is her patience. What would the Warners do with her? Yakko and Wakko can’t jump in her arms screaming HELLOOOOO NURSE anymore, and outside of “Extremely Hot Woman Turns Out To Be The Most Capable Person Around”, she has no jokes.
The only way to make her CEO and keep her in character is to have the Warners cause chaos outside of the studio, and that ruins the meta, which allows the writers to make jokes about working at a studio.
And Animaniacs without meta is like a Bugs Bunny cartoon without sass. What’s the point? Why even bother?
So no, I don’t see how making Hello Nurse the CEO would have worked.
3) The Warners aren’t as chaotic!
This one I KINDA see, but I think part of the problem is addressed in that catch-up song:
“What’s going on? Will we be okay? Has the world gone mad since we went away?”
I think the world caught up with their zaniness, so they just don’t look that crazy. I don’t know if we’ll get a PLOT for that, but I think that’s the meta: the world’s gone mad enough that the Warners almost seem behaved.
Also, Animaniacs was an ensemble show, so the Warner bits were actually rarer and special. There could be entire episodes where the only time the siblings show up was to turn the wheel of morality. By spreading out the Warners’ segments, their appearance would be seen as more special in the show, and that does add to how they were perceived in the 90’s.
There is a 4th criticism, which I do agree with- they need to bring in more characters and segments.
I heard there might be a few in later episodes (I just finished ep 4), but I definitely miss the Goodfeathers, Slappy & Skippy, and Rita & Runt. I’m excited for the new characters, but I just.... just let me watch Pesto kick Squit’s ass while Bobby laughs. That was always fun. XD
Also I saw in the Chicken Boo episode that Squit was the one holding a log like he was gonna kick some ass. I want to see THAT character development!
Overall, though, I’m having a lot of fun watching this! I’m glad it came back!

Streaming Service Suffusion
One day, a man had an idea. He rented video tapes to people for like two bucks a night. He could clear the copyright on the tapes for say fifty bucks each, so every 26th customer was clear profit. This man’s name was David Blockbuster.
Then everything went digital and David Blockbuster got confused. But another man had an idea. What if you just sort of set up robot-controlled boxes with selections of DVDs and anyone could just sort of go there and get one and give it back and so on. Then this same man took his business online and for a fixed monthly fee, he would send you two or three DVDs from a wide selection which you could keep as long as you like, but you can’t have any more until you give them back. This man’s name was David Netflix and this model completely destroyed Blockbuster.
But Netflix wasn’t done yet.
The real genius was taking the entire business model online. Now, for a fixed monthly fee, you can stream as many movies or TV shows from a wide selection as often as you like. All day every day if you want.
With the perfect storm of a huge variety of content, a cheap subscription fee, a minimalist single front end and a bunch of servers that don’t drop, Netflix has taken over the market. The model is so successful that illegal pirating has dropped fairly dramatically since its pre-Netflix heyday. The moral, of course, is a stab in the teeth to traditional distributors who always claimed that “video pirates” were ruining the industry. It turns out that most people are perfectly happy to pay for a service they actually want.
But you don’t get to turn over billions without others cutting themselves off a slice of the action. They know that simply launching their own service won’t be enough, so they’ve been launching services that act as the only vectors for particular shows they suspect will be hot.
CBS All Access has Star Trek Discovery and next year, the legitimately hotly anticipated Picard. Amazon Prime had The Man In The High Castle and Transparent and lately, Good Omens. Hulu, the only real international competition, has The Handmaid’s Tale and an Animaniacs reboot. Sony Crackle has, I guess, some good shows too.
It seems counter-productive for everyone to have their own streaming service, but Netflix figured out pretty early on that you can short-cut an entire market by doing deals with distributors domestically and internationally.
I’ve seen a show called The Rain and another show called 3%, both dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction shows which I would never be able to see normally, because they are Danish and Brazilian respectively.
So it makes sense for a distributor to see Netflix making lots of money from their content and figuring that they could probably do this themselves. But this undermines two of the four foundations of this model mentioned above: a small cost and a single front-end.
What’s going to happen?
With Star Trek: Discovery, CBS kept the distribution license for the US and Canada and sold the world distribution rights to Netflix (as CBS has no international distribution network). This could be scaled up to include more or less every production. Everything on every exclusive streaming service could be licensed to every other streaming service to compete in otherwise unavailable markets.
Why not? This isn’t too far off what happens now anyway, if CBS chose to license Star Trek to the BBC or RTE (both of which have a streaming service, but in both of those cases, it’s free).
That’s it, then. I predict the future: rather than the total fragmentation of the market that all the experts appear to be expecting, I predict a conglomeration of distribution markets based around all the streaming services licensing their content to every other streaming service and all of them making more money than they ever did before.
Remind me to check back on this post in a few years.

(QuaranTV 4) Animaniacs: Reboot, Revival or Ruined?
If you are like me (and heaven help you if you are), one of the few bright spots on the news in 2020 was the announcement Animaniacs would be returning with new episodes on Hulu. Being a college student in the early ‘90s (and studying art to boot), those were prime cartoon years for me. And there were great shows being tossed out in the after-school hours, too! Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and, of course, Animaniacs. In recent years it has completely baffled me how, despite the influx of kids related networks spread across cable/satellite providers and the post-HD boom of low powered digital sub channels chocked full of retro programming, there is no longer a real after school or Saturday morning power block of cartoons anymore. So when I heard Animaniacs was returning I was hit with a wave of hope, nostalgia and even a little fear they would screw it up or it would turn into a one off deal that ultimately disappoints (Teen Titans, I am looking at you).
Before I get into Animaniacs, let me mention one of the bigger retro-programming centered low power digital sub channel networks, METV, has announced they are bringing back Saturday morning cartoons starting January 2, 2021 so check your local listings.
Let me start by mentioning I have not watched all of the new Animaniacs yet; I’m about half a dozen episodes in and kind of avoiding binge watching the whole series. You know, trying to savor it. All in all, I am really enjoying the Animaniacs revival. It is a revival, by the way, as the Warners are the same Warners and the new series is basically a continuation of the original. It is worth watching, and it will make you laugh. Remember that while I commence to bitch about it!
One of my big disappointments with the new series is so far it is basically the Warners and Pinky and the Brain show. The new opening sequence mentions there are new characters (which played well to the focus groups) but with the exception of the new, female, studio president none have surfaced and she has not been much of a presence on the show. None of the other old characters have popped up either, with the exception of Ralph the security guard. Don’t get me wrong, I like Pinky and the Brain but they could have just revived either Pinky and The Brain or Pinky and The Brain and Elmyra (‘member that?).
The fifth episode, which features Pinky and Brain being chased by “every Yakuza and their mothers” and meeting Edward Snowden, kind of addresses the lack of supporting characters but really does not introduce anyone new to replace Slappy Squirrel, the Hip Hippoes, Slappy Squirrel, Dr. Scratchansniff or any of my other old favorites. Perhaps that will change in episode six. I hope so! Animaniacs needs more than just the Warners and a couple of gene-spliced rodents to keep the show moving.
So speaking of the Warners... there is my other big disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, they are still funny and I still laugh at the show. But the new Animaniacs is different and the Warners are at the heart of it because they are the core of the show and, honestly, Pinky and the Brain are pretty much exactly the same as they have been in every show featuring them. I first noticed it in the new opening song, which has understandably been updated. With most of the old cast gone it does not makes sense to mention Goodfeathers, Buttons and Mindy or Slappy Squirrel in the lyrics. With the passage of time it makes sense Wakko no longer packs away the snacks while Bill Clinton plays the sax; the show needs to be timely to keep its edge. What I noticed, though, was that it used to be “Dot is cute and Yakko yacks” but that has been changed to “Dot has wit and Yakko yacks.” The lyrics also take a swipe at modern political correctness by pointing out the new (as of yet unseen) cast is “gender balanced, pronoun neutral and ethnically diverse.” So what to make of the change in Dot’s line?
The Warners are more politically correct now... “Helloooooo, nurse!” was basically their catchphrase. Hell, I think I still have an Animaniacs paperweight somewhere (with my Animaniacs snow globe) that says “Helloooooo, nurse!” and a few other phrases when you move it. But they have yet to udder those words in the new series and Dr. Scratchansniff’s nurse is among the casualties of the cast change. There has also barely been a reference to the fact nobody seems to know what the Warners are (I believe the good doctor referred to them as “puppy-children”). Also gone seems to be the original show’s taking old fashioned cartoon formats and tropes and applying them to today’s pop culture (like a trip to the Hollywood Canteen or Brown Derby as an excuse to introduce a bunch of parody versions of contemporary movie stars). Animaniacs was a new cartoon back in 1993 but it broke away form the Scooby Doo 30 minute single story mold and went back to the Merry Melodies and Looney Toons style plots and formats even more than its cousin Tiny Toon Adventures did.
The problem I see with the new Animaniacs is they are modernizing a ‘90s cartoon so the Warners can provide commentary and satire on today’s issues, pop culture and society but missing some important character traits of their main cast. What seems to be forgotten is the fact the Warner Brothers (and the Warner Sister) might have been actually created in the early ‘90s but they were not supposed to be from the 1990s... they were supposed to be uncontrollable characters from 1930s black and white cartoons. Although they were good sorts deep down, they were not politically correct and they were not grown ups. I am afraid the new Animaniacs, despite the fact it has jumped from after school broadcast TV aimed at kids to streaming media aimed at adults, has actually become in some ways more restrained and self censored. A rather weak segment on gun control using multiplying bunnies instead of guns (or “buns,” which kind of illustrates how thin the writing was on that) which missed plenty of opportunities for non-political humor (the multiplying rabbits screamed for a Star Trek Tribble reference and an irreverent portrayal of William Shatner) and chose to be preachy instead kind of bolsters my fears.
So is Animaniacs worth watching? Yes, for sure if you were a fan of the original or even want a cartoon you can watch with your kids. Just be warned: they seem to be streamlining the cast to cash in of the best remembered characters and the show has lost a little of the wit, charm and edge that made the original so damn good. If you missed Animaniacs the first time around and want to figure out what made it so special and beloved, you ain’t going to find it here. The old show had a fearlessness to it, something that in a really weird way I can only liken to almost a kid’s version of the fearlessness found in Chappelle’s Show. Unfortunately that fearlessness seems to be gone now.

PEMDAS -- 11•19•20
Welcome to the new PEMDAS Blog! My work on PEMDAS keeps expanding each week so it needs a bigger home. She loves The Overwhelm.
My main goal is to have a one glance spot for all things news/entertainment. I want it to contain as much detail as possible without being too cluttered. Striking the balance is hard. If you have feedback, please share it with me.
Open below for PEMDAS!
POLITICS/NEWS
U.S. Coronavirus Numbers
More than 11,695,500 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 251,100 have died.
The number of people who have died from Coronavirus in the U.S. is equivalent to 84 times the number of U.S. citizens who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It is 56 times the number of U.S. soldiers who died in the war against Iraq. It is 7 times the number of U.S. citizens who died from the flu last year.
On Nov. 18: 1,923 deaths (+52% 14-day change), 172,391 infections (+77% 14-day change)
The rates of infection and death remain disproportionately high in the Native American communities across the country. Just last weekend, 600 Native people died on the Navajo reservation.
Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa has contracted coronavirus. The nation mourns :-(
Global Coronavirus Numbers
The coronavirus pandemic has sickened more than 56,661,800 people, according to official counts. As of Thursday afternoon, at least 1,355,100 people have died.
On Nov. 18: 11,133 deaths (+13% 14-day change), 598,877 infections (+25% 14-day change)
Election 2020
President-Elect Biden claims that Trump’s refusal to concede the election is preventing him from accessing critical data about the U.S. outbreak and that this could slow the vaccine distribution process.
President-Elect Biden names Cecilia Muñoz as part of his transition team. Muñoz served as a top immigration advisor for Obama, justifying harsh immigration policies, including the deportation of thousands of Central American children and the killing of an executive order that would have halted deportations.
Nancy Pelosi is re-elected as Speaker of the House.
World News
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo toured an illegal Israeli settlement and said he has plans to tour another in the occupied Golan Heights. This violates multiple U.N. resolutions and the Geneva Conventions. He also labelled the B.D.S. movement “anti-Semitic.”
In Central America, at least 30 people have died from Hurricane Iota. About 160,000 Nicaraguans and 70,000 Hondurans were forced to flee from their homes.
The head of the Australian military has apologized to the people of Afghanistan after Australian special forces committed war crimes by killing 39 noncombatants in Afghanistan over the past 4 years.
A nearly three-decade-old ceasefire has ended in occupied Western Sahara — what many consider to be Africa’s last colony. Fighting has broken out in several areas between the Moroccan military and the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi liberation movement seeking independence, after the Moroccan military broke into a no-go buffer zone in southern Western Sahara.

EDUCATION — Topic: this Candace Owens tweet
“There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this.“
Both of these sentences separately are not true; both of them together are not true.
Here is an article about a village in China (”the East”) with women running the show.
Here is a list of several others, mostly in “the East.”
“In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence.“
First of all, Marx has not been an outright advocate for a gender-queer society.
Second of all, I think she’s right. Socialism and gender/queer theory are intertwined in so many ways.
“It is an outright attack.“
And I think she’s right about this, too. Socialism and gender/queer theory all are an attack on the cis-hetero white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.
“Bring back manly men.“
Okay, this is where I think she’s wrong again.
1) "Manly men” haven’t gone anywhere...
2) Is she basically arguing that a couple of men wearing dresses means every man is no longer “manly?” This makes no sense.
3) In a society, “manly men” can coexist with “feminized” men. There is enough room for everyone. And there will always be men who want to take up the “manly” MANtle. And there will be queer/trans masc people who will want to do the same, though I’m sure Candace would hate that.

There’s an Animaniacs reboot coming in September. I’m not sure how I feel. All the original cast is back but only one of the original writers. Also your mom has amazing taste in cartoons! I’m watching the whole series again now! It’s beautiful as well as zainy! Think the new one’s coming to Hulu? Not surreeee
Omg that's so cool!! I just looked it up and it says it's going on Hulu, I'm so excited! I don't think the new writers will ruin the show (especially considering it's such a classic) but obviously I don't know for sure
I really need to finish rewatching the show, I got side tracked months ago and never came back to it lmfao, I've seen it all before though it was just a long time ago
Also I'm a bit confused about the mom thing akxjdjs sorry I just woke up. But yeah she likes things like Bob's Burgers and such, but she usually prefers live action older shows like the Golden Girls and Frasier! (I freaking LOVE Kelsey Grammar so I'm right there with her)
#clayton answers#i probably posted about my mom and i don't remember#or it was a typo#idfk lmao#i don't mind tho
