GAY ICONS - ROSS HUNTER
Ross Hunter was a successful Hollywood producer for 20 years (1954 to 1973). His best known and more successful films were light comedies, musicals and melodramatic "tear jerkers". All with an emphasis on romance and glamour.
Hunter played an important role in shaping Rock Hudson‘s career when he cast the young actor in the 1954 remake of “Magnificent Obsession”. Over the next few years Hunter produced some of Hudson’s most successful films, including All That Heaven Allows, Battle Hymn, and their last outing Pillow Talk (1959). That romantic comedy costarred another of Hunter’s mainstay, Doris Day.
Hunter later said:
“I gave the public what they wanted: a chance to dream, to live vicariously, to see beautiful women, jewels, gorgeous clothes, melodrama."
Hunter’s life partner was Jacque Mapes. Mapes started his career in Hollywood as a set designer but eventually graduated to producing movies. Hunter and Mapes regularly co-produced movies together so it’s not unusual to find publicity photos of the two together.
Tumblr media
The duo first met at a private Hollywood party (1940?). According to a friend, Hunter was Tyrone Power’s lover at the time and Mapes was in a relationship with Errol Flynn. But when the Hunter and Mapes first saw each other, it was love or lust at first sight. Hunter said:
“I remember, I was at the top of the stairs, and there was Jacque. Our eyes met, and we left the party, dumped our famous boyfriends, and we've been together ever since'."
My personal favorite film produced by Hunter is “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (1967) which starred Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing.
Tumblr media
Hunter’s career had a downward turn with another movie musical, “Lost Horizon” (1973). It was critical and financial flop. But Hunter continued to produce movies… but only for TV (until 1979).
Although Hunter must have been out to his closest friends and associates, I couldn’t find any reference to him publicly coming out.
In fact, Hunter clung to the Hollywood closet in regards to Rock Hudson - his long time friend of over 30 years. When a reporter asked Ross about Hudson’s death from AIDS, the producer claimed:
“I didn’t even know Rock was gay.”
Ross Hunter died of cancer with Mapes at his side in 1996.
Some of Ross Hunter’s leading ladies.

FRESH OFF THE BOAT, POSTERS AND ART
Season 1, 2 and 3 are HERE:
Season 4, 2017
Tumblr media
In 2017, the cast of Fresh Off The Boat re-created the painting "Whistler's Mother" (1871) by James McNeill Whistler for a poster to promote the forth season of the show. Constance Wu posed as Whistler's mother, Anna McNeill Whistler.
Tumblr media
Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1, best known under its colloquial name Whistler's Mother, is a painting in oils on canvas created by the American-born painter James McNeill Whistler in 1871. The subject of the painting is Whistler's mother, Anna McNeill Whistler. The painting is 56.81 by 63.94 inches (1,443 mm × 1,624 mm), displayed in a frame of Whistler's own design. It is held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, having been bought by the French state in 1891. It is one of the most famous works by an American artist outside the United States. It has been variously described as an American icon and a Victorian Mona Lisa.
Anna McNeill Whistler posed for the painting while living in London with her son at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea.
Several unverifiable stories relate to the painting of the work; one is that Anna Whistler acted as a replacement for another model who could not make the appointment. It is also said that Whistler originally envisioned painting the model standing up, but that his mother was too uncomfortable to pose standing for an extended period.
The image has been used since the Victorian era as an icon for motherhood, affection for parents, and "family values" in general, especially in the United States.
For example, the painting was used in "Fight for Her", a World War I recruitment poster from Canada, urging men to enlist with the Irish Canadian Rangers and to fight for the women in their lives. It appeals to notions of motherhood and family values that were popular at the time, and often attributed to this painting.
The painting become the subject of a 1934 three cent U. S. postage stamp "in memory and in honor of the mothers of America".
In 1938 the painting was used as model for Mothers' Memorial, a statue in Ashland, Pennsylvania. The Ashland Boys’ Association (A.B.A.), an organization of men and boys born in Ashland, raised the funds for the fabrication and erection of this monument.
The A.B.A. was formed in the early 20th century in response to the widespread job loss and dispersion of coal miners as mines began to fail. It was a homecoming organization that welcomed former Ashland residents back to their hometown. Men from all parts of Pennsylvania, as well as several other states, participated in these annual celebrations. The A.B.A. was the archetype of a poignant Pennsylvania story: how successive waves of industrialization and economic development create then destroy industries and communities, leaving large groups of people longing for the associations and comforts of family, friends and home. The Mother’s Memorial stands as a symbol of this sentiment.
The seven foot high three-dimensional sculpture was designed by Emil Siebern and sculpted by Julius Loester. Both artists were sculptors from New York who specialized in public art – funerary decoration, memorials, park statuary, etc. At the base of the statue you can read the words "a mother is the holiest thing alive".
Season 5, 2018
Tumblr media
In 2018, the cast of Fresh Off The Boat posed for a Pop-Art poster, that recall the most famous of Andy Warhol seriography.
Tumblr media
Andy Warhol was a neurotic and fragile child. Growing up in Depression-era Pittsburgh, he developed Sydenham chorea, a neurological disorder that left him confined to the house for months at a time. During his convalescence, he stoked an obsession with movie stars: he pored over fan magazines and even convinced his older brother, Paul, to write fan letters to the celebrities on his behalf. In exchange, the studios sent him dozens of headshots—autographed glossies of stars like Veronica Lake, Mae West, Marjorie Reynolds and, his all-time favourite, Shirley Temple, who misspelled his name in her personalized message. He painstakingly pasted each one into a cardboard scrapbook, arranging them in orderly grids.
That scuffed album is the key to understanding Andy Warhol: a whimsical career devoted to the reverence and ridicule of celebrity commodification. (Even his fluffy platinum-blond wig looked like a distorted tribute to Hollywood glamour.)
Born to a poor but close-knit Byzantine Catholic family, young Andy Warhol absorbed images of both the saintly icons on the altar of his local church and the glamorous stars he saw in the movies at his neighborhood cinema. Both would influence his life and art.
Warhol was an obsessive collection continued also in adult age: in the 1970s, when Hollywood studios were emptying their vaults, Warhol attended auctions to find photographic treasures. He purchased many photographs depicting celebrities past and present from the great collector John Kobal, and received others as gifts or discovered them at antique stores and flea markets.
After graduating, Andy Warhol moved to New York to become a commercial illustrator.
He was good at it too, creating magazine ads with a particular inky style that was very popular for a time.
Getting his art into the galleries, however, wasn’t so easy. Back then there was a clear line between fine art and commercial art, and Warhol had become a well-known commercial illustrator.
But Andy Warhol decided to use that to his advantage. He began to experiment with the stuff of commercialism itself—logos, trademarks, icons—things that had no fine art qualities at all.
Calling his studio "a factory", Warhol was interested in mass production, in commerce, and in the business of making money. Using repetition of similar or identical ready-made objects as a formal structure, he referred to himself as "a machine".
The use of repetition in the work of Andy Warhol is perhaps the most interesting and challenging components of his Pop Art.
In his works Warhol simultaneously celebrated and criticized consumption choices and mass (re)production, effectively turning his work into a repetitive whirlwind and establishing the grounds for the most successful Post–World War II art movement.
In the obsessive repetitions of Warhol, repetition produces a harmony which frees the shape from the contents.
Warhol's pop art can be seen as a relation to Minimal art in the sense that it attempts to portray objects in their most simple, immediately recognizable form.
On the occasion of Marilyn Monroe’s suicide in August 1962, Warhol used this image for his screenprinting. It was a publicity shot by Gene Korman for the film Niagara, made in 1953.
"In August 62 I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silkscreening you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue. That way you get the same image, slightly different each time. It was all so simple quick and chancy. I was thrilled with it. When Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face – the first Marilyns."
Each print is vibrantly colored to reflect her vivacious personality. In many of the prints, her iconic lips are boldly colored a deep red. Many of the prints also emphasize her platinum blonde hair by adding variants of yellow. The colors ultimately bring to life Marilyn Monroe’s iconic status and celebrity glamour. By creating repetitive imagery, Warhol evokes her ubiquitous celebrity status.
Marylin Monroe is not a person anymore, she is become a commodity good, endlessly consumed by her public. (About how Marilyn Monroe become a sex symbol: LINK)
Season 6, 2019
Tumblr media
In 2019, the cast of Fresh Off The Boat re-created the photo "Lunch atop a Skyscraper" (1932) by Charles C. Ebbets for a poster to promote the last season of the show.
Tumblr media
The photo appeared the first in the Sunday photo supplement of the New York Herald Tribune on October 2, 1932.
The photograph was taken on September 20, 1932, on the 69th floor of the RCA Building during the last months of construction. According to archivists, the photograph was in fact prearranged. Although the photograph shows real ironworkers, it is believed that the moment was staged by Rockefeller Center to promote its new skyscraper.
Formerly attributed to "unknown", and often misattributed to Lewis Hine, it was credited to Charles C. Ebbets in 2003. Evidence confirming his authorship held in the Ebbets' Estate archives include original work orders showing invoices to Rockefeller Center for the time period surrounding the photo, letters of recommendation from his work at Rockefeller Center when the photo was taken, a copy of the original article from the NY Herald Tribune when the photo first appeared in 1932 in his own scrapbook of his work, photos from his office in NY taken in 1932 showing the image on a bulletin board display of his work, and a negative of him at work on the site that day.
The movie Men at Lunch traces some of the men to possible Irish origin, and the director reported in 2013 that he planned to follow up other claims from Swedish relatives. The film confirms the identities of two men: Joseph Eckner, third from the left, and Joe Curtis, third from the right, by cross referencing with other pictures taken the same day, on which they were named at the time. The first man from the right has been identified as Slovak worker Gustáv (Gusti) Popovič from the village of Vyšný Slavkov in the Levoča District. Popovič was originally a lumberjack and carpenter. In 1932 he sent his wife Mária (Mariška) a postcard with this photograph on which he wrote, "Don´t you worry, my dear Mariška, as you can see I'm still with bottle. Your Gusti."
Gustáv and Mária's joint grave in the Vyšný Slavkov cemetery is decorated with the picture.

Taylor Swift Hopes For Oscar Win With ‘Cats’ Role: She Feels ‘Blessed’ To Have Shot At Big Award
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift already has a slew of Grammys, but could an Oscar be coming her way in 2020? She’s hoping for an Academy Award for playing Bombalurina in the film adaptation of ‘Cats.’
Taylor Swift‘s co-stars from Cats have already gushed about how talented she is in the role of flirtatious kitty Bombalurina. The 29-year-old is hoping that her performance in the film adaptation of the beloved musical play will snag her an Oscar in 2020. “Taylor has been blessed with tons of awards over her illustrious career, and she doesn’t see any end in sight. She is such an amazingly hard worker, so the awards mean so much to her. She would love it if she was blessed enough to become an Oscar winner too,” a source close to the superstar tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY “She will obviously continue her super successful career in music, but she worked so hard on Cats and it would be awesome if she got recognized for it with an Academy Award. Taylor is a planner and a dreamer and she certainly hopes to entertain her fans for a long time to come — but winning an Oscar would be the icing on the cake,” our insider adds.
If there was an award for having fun on the set of Cats, Taylor already has locked that down. She revealed during an appearance on May 24’s The Graham Norton Show that “I had to go to cat school to learn how to move and behave. I was meant to go for three days and I stayed for four months! I had much more fun than anyone else.” Taylor will also be able to showcase her vocal chops as Bombalurina sings four songs: “The Old Gumbie Cat”; “The Rum Tum Tugger,” “Grizabella: The Glamour Cat,” and “Macavity: The Mystery Cat.”
The movie features an all-star cast including Sir Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, James Corden, Rebel Wilson, Dame Judi Dench and Jennifer Hudson. It’s opening on Dec. 20, which is prime time for awards season bait movies. Idris plays villainous Macavity and had numerous scenes with Taylor, whose talent he praised to our sister site Variety in March. “Taylor was great. Her and I had a lot of work to do together, and she was amazing. She worked hard and was just happy to be there,” the 46-year-old Luther star revealed.
ts1989fanatic this is just so much BULLSHIT I don’t know of one fan who would believe that Taylor even thinks like this.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Hasn’t Met Taylor Swift, But He Likes That She’s a Cat Person
September 26, 2018 By Benjamin Lindsay
Between earning his EGOT status, celebrating his 70th birthday, releasing his memoir Unmasked, and being honored last night for his legendary career at the annual American Theatre Wing gala, 2018 has been a big year for Andrew Lloyd Webber. (And he knows it, too.) When Vulture caught up with him at the gala, he joked that “it’s just the year that I’m 70 — the year that they want to pension me off,” but acknowledged that he really is busier than ever. “I’ve actually suddenly realized that I’ve got more work at the moment than I’ve ever had,” he said.
In addition to working with British writers Tom MacRae and Emerald Fennell on a contemporary staged retelling of Cinderella, Lloyd Webber is also involved in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation of Cats, which was was recently given a December 20, 2019, release date, and according to him, starts filming in November.
“We’re beginning to rehearse now,” Lloyd Webber said of the film, which stars Jennifer Hudson as former “glamour cat” Grizabella, along with James Corden and Ian McKellen.
The casting news that’s gotten the most notice, however, is that cat lady Taylor Swift is playing an as-yet-unnamed role. On her casting, Lloyd Webber spilled a little milk, telling Vulture that Swift will play either the flirty Bombalurina or the skittish Demeter, the duo who sing “Macavity the Mystery Cat.”
“She’s going to play one or other of the ‘Macavity’ girls,” he said, though he’s “not sure yet” which one. “Well, basically, Tom Hooper thought it was a really good idea, and of course, she loves cats,” Lloyd Webber said, cheekily. “We’ll see. I mean, I haven’t met her, so I’m looking forward to meeting her and seeing her [at work].”

Top 30 Most Underrated Albums!!
My top 30 favorite albums that I think are lovely and should be praised WAAAAY more than they are! Everything on here is great and I recommend all these albums!
30. Bon Iver - 22 A Million
Bon Iver takes his sound to the most experimental. Vocoder passages are super dope, 715 Creeks is an insanely underrated tune.
29. Siriusmo - Mosaik
Great kitschy synth music. Catchy, lighthearted, sweet and playful.
28. Bones - Useless
Best underground soundcloud rap album in my opinion. Cavernous, edgy, loud and depressing.
27. Mellowhype - Numbers
For an album with what I consider to be one of the best Frank Ocean features ever I hardly see it talked about in hip-hop circles. Great album.
26. Justice - Audio Video Disco
Grossly overshadowed by it’s monolithic older brother Cross, Audio Video Disco still serves bangers. Civilization is one of my top 10 songs of all time but On’n’on, Helix and New Lands should not be overlooked!
25. Gesaffelstein - Aleph
If I had to describe Aleph in a single word it would be brooding. Runners up include expensive, violent and scary.
24. Duck Sauce - Quack
If anything proves that we are long overdue for a full length A-Trak solo album, it’s this.
23. Yung Lean - Unknown Memory
Cloud rap pioneer Yung Lean’s opus. Volt, Sunrise Angel, Sandman and Blinded are all incredibly ahead of their time.
22. Playboi Carti - In Abundance
This one comes with a bit of a caveat considering it is a fan-compiled mixtape and not an official album but many of the songs on this project in my opinion stack up against highlights from S/T, Die Lit and WLR.
21. Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
Referring to this album as moody and ambient don’t do it justice but for the sake of keeping  this list concise it will have to do. Dead Can Dance deserve the highest order of praise for this medieval epic.
20. Porches - The House
A melancholy and personal look into Porches frontman Aaron Maine’s experiences with social anxiety and depression. It’s groovy and will have you dancing with tears in your eyes.
19. Oni Ayhun - Oar003
Only two tracks long which makes it the shortest album on this list, Olof Dreijer of The Knife, under the pseudonym Oni Ayhun, makes curious, twinkling techno on Oar003.
18. Amnesia Scanner - Another Life
Abrasive and glitchy, german electronic duo Amnesia Scanner’s first album is not for the feint of heart but anyone who decides to keep an open mind (and the volume knob sitting lower than usual) will find some truly captivating moments of electronic brilliance on this record.
17. Mr Oizo - All Wet
Absolutely fucking hilarious album. With features from Skrillex, Boys Noize, Peaches and even Charli Xcx. All wet is modern dadaism and if you don’t believe me make sure you check out No Tony and Chairs in particular.
16. Crystal Castles - Amnesty (I)
I do not understand why this album isn’t  considered more when talking about Crystal Castles’ discography. It sounds related to their self titled trilogy but takes the band’s style in a less dance oriented, more experimental almost instrumental hiphop direction. Edith Francis’ vocals are great and the songs Ornament and Fleece stand out in particular, not to mention that the bonus track Kept may be one of the group’s best.
15. Simian Mobile Disco - Murmuations
Very low-key electronic music from Simian Mobile Disco, Murmurations features some flooring choral pieces backed by soft dance patterns. Great relaxing listen for fans of Caribou, Jamie XX and Chrome Sparks.
14. Mdou Moctar - Ilana (The Creator)
Where to even begin with this one! Mdou Moctar is a guitarist from Niger and Ilana (The Creator) is in my opinion his best work. Fuzzy rock music that sounds like it’s being played from 50-foot monitors in the middle of the Sahara.
13. Chemical Brothers - Further
Chemical brother’s second sleekest album after born in the echoes, Further has glamour that you’re seldom able to find elsewhere.
12. Boys Noize - Mayday
Absolute fucking rager of an album. Featuring Policia, Remy Banks and Hudson Mohawke among others, Boys Noize is in your face and doesn’t give a shit on Mayday. The remix of Birthday released after the album with Danny Brown is priceless.
11. Nico - Desertshore
Break out the tissues if you plan on listening to Desertshore today, this album is unrelentingly melancholic. Nico’s vocals sound almost ghost-like at times and the instrumentals on here are gorgeous.
10. The Newcomer - Earth Motivation
Sopping wet with OPN influence, Earth Motivation is glitchy but retains an emotional quality that will sit with you for a while after your first listen. Perfect for fans of Autechre, Oneohtrixpointnever and Venetian Snares.
9. Tami T - High Pitched and Moist
High Pitched and Moist is definitely not for everyone, but if you like your pop smeared with autotune and in-your-face sexuality then Tami T’s 2019 album is perfect for you! I recommend this one for any fans of Fever Ray and GFOTY.
8. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Async
From the jump, Japanese avant garde classical composer, pianist, electronic musician and synthpop legend Ryuichi Sakamoto hits you where it hurts on Async. The first tune Andata is one of the most beautiful and soul crushing instrumental songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, but the quality remains consistent throughout the entire record.
7.  Blanck Mass - World Eater
Holy. Fuck. Drop whatever you’re doing right now and listen to this album. I don’t care if you’re in a business meeting or getting lunch, World Eater demands the utmost attention. After hearing the transition from the end of Rhesus Negative to Please my life was never the same. I can’t sing Blanck Mass’ praises enough so you’re going to have to check this one out yourself but I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed.
6. Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene
French synth deity Jean-Michel Jarre’s intergalactic journey Oxygene is a record that soars above and beyond its compatriots (namely Mort Garson’s Plantasia and Jean-Jacques Perrey’s Moog Indigo) and will take you on an extra-planetary voyage from which you may never return. I recommend listening to this album with the best sound system you have available to really get the most out of it.
5. The Knife - Shaken-Up Versions
Technically The Knife’s last album before their retirement (not counting the Terminal 7 Live album), Shaken-Up Versions sees Karin and Olof Dreijer metamorphosing songs from all across their discography into dancefloor fillers. Electronic musicians retooling their material into more danceable, DJ set ready tracks is nothing new (See Alive 2007 and All Across the Universe) but the Knife’s catalog is already so impressive that hearing classics transmogrified like this is a phenomenal experience that I don’t want any dance music fans to miss out on! They reworked Silent Shout for christ’s sake how can you not love this.
4. Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Ecophony Rinne
Katsuhiro Otomo famously tapped Geinoh Yamashirogumi for the soundtrack to Akira, but what some of you may not know is that, while working on the Akira manga, Otomo was listening to this record in particular which inspired him to collaborate with the collective for the Akira film. Ecophony Rinne is like nothing I have ever heard before or since. It’s got a tectonic quality to it that makes you think you’re witnessing an extinction event or the birth of a new universe while listening which is an experience I highly recommend, ESPECIALLY for fans of the Akira manga and film; this album sounds like how Akira looks and Akira looks damn good.
3. Buy Muy Drugs - Buy Muy Drugs
Slept on in every regard, Buy Muy Drugs is a triumph of experimental and industrial hiphop. The duo made up of rapper Denmark Vessey and producer Azarias are welding together grime, bass music and afro-cuban percussion into a dystopic and pummeling listening experience that gets better and better with every listen. To quote JPEGMAFIA, “Death Grips can’t do this shit”.
2. Susumu Hirasawa - Technique of Relief
This album is jaw-dropping. It’s pop, ambient, traditional-Japanese experimental choral synth music delivered with soaring, regal grandiosity. One of the closest things to musical perfection I can think of, Technique of Relief is an album that even now I am having a difficult time describing. Intensely emotional yet hopeful; groovy but substantive, Susumu Hirasawa penned an oeuvre with this record.
1. Daft Punk - Human After All
The number one spot goes to the black sheep of the world’s most beloved electronic music making androids’ discography. Panned on release for being “spread thin” and “too minimal”, (The Village Voice went so far as to call the album “ a bad record whose details rarely merit further thought “) Daft Punk’s third album Human After all is definitely different from it’s rhinestone studded predecessor but in the absolute best way possible. It’s groovy, dark, emotional, tragic, minimal, distorted and it yields some of the robots’ best tracks (Human After All detractors seem to forget that Technologic, Robot Rock and the title track do not actually stem from the Alive 2007 Coachella set but rather find their home on this album). Sleeper gems like Make Love, Emotion, Television Rule the Nation and Prime Time of Your Life range from introspective and moody RnB that would not feel out of place on a Sebastien Tellier record to blown out, gravelly rock oriented tunes that remind the listener of Daft Punk’s roots as french garage rockers. Phenomenal album, criminally underrated.
