Charities

Both charities are whole works of fiction.

IT WAS AT a White House Christmas party in 1977 that First Lady Rosalynn Carter, standing beside the holly-decked mantle in the State Dining Room, was first introduced to a 300-pound, self-proclaimed Santa Claus named John Ellsworth.

Ellsworth-felon, forger and government informer on friends and foes alike -- bears little resemblance to St. Nicholas.

But his con-man's eyes can be very merry and his expansive girth can shake like a bowlful of jelly when he tells you -- as he first told Mrs. Carter -- of his love for the little children of the world and his idea he had for circling the globe, dispensing the good things of life to deprived youngsters.

With that spiel, Ellsworth ensnared Mrs. Carter and later her son Chip into lending respectability to the International Children's Appeal, a questionable charity scheme that one participant has since described as "the scam of the century."

The story in this issue reads like a brochure from the phoney charity, and what is striking in reading it is that beyond something vague like being "For the Children", I can't for the life of me tell where charitable donations are supposed to be going or doing. The story's brochure/ power point presentation does segue into more specific things you -- or maybe your older siblings? -- could be doing "for the children", or for children -- (put on children's plays! ) which is better, I guess, but runs through a different stream then sending money to "International Children's Appeal".

The second story in this issue is great. And though I can't say much for the other material in the issue, they do have the virtue of not being part of a money laundering operation.

So we had the great honor of hosting a Mushroom Cultivation workshop here on the land. Everyone went home with Oyster and Wine Cap Spawn bags. And our wonderful facilitator left us with two buckets of oyster spawn on straw and the participants built a wine cap woodchip bed with hardwood mulch on the land! This Wine Cap Mushroom Bed is now one of the first installments in the Incubator Hub so that people who were in the workshop and put in their labor can come to pick mushrooms once they fruit!
