that said about a week ago I talked a bit on Alaric and Htal’s relationship on discord:

The thing about Htal is that his relationship with Alaric and his helplessness is meant to have its own meaning beyond what service it does to the plot.

Htal is in an abusive dynamic with Alaric: Alaric has manipulated him, putting him in a position where he is isolated from his family and anyone who could help Htal leave, he has convinced Htal that Alaric’s employment is the only employment option he has (and to some extent, he is right). He has also given Htal a position of perceived power in the ship but ultimately he doesn’t even have access to send missives on behalf of the ship. He also physically isolates him, deliberately goes against Wir taboos (such as pressing sharing meals until Htal feels like he needs to initiate them) and encourages Htal’s low self esteem, chipping away at him while also building Alaric up as not only an authority figure but his only true friend and ally.

So when Htal doesn’t help Grey beyond token arguing—it’s because Htal is well and truly under Alaric’s thumb, and because Htal sees himself as being incapable of action. He has learned helplessness and is a victim of abuse. The reason I did this is not only to give Htal’s character the ability to develop when he encounters Grey, but to also show the true colors of Alaric’s character.

But the most important thing is that Htal is strong, competent and really fucking skilled. He is in peak health, from an elite training background, very intelligent and—abused. These types of dynamics can happen to anyone, and it’s unexpected because Htal is not the “victim type”(I don’t think there IS a victim type, maybe beyond someone who is for whatever reason vulnerable and being preyed on during that time).

Like, it would mean a lot less if Htal was just weaker than Alaric. But he’s not—he’s a better fighter than Alaric even though Alaric IS good at fighting, and that was part of the appeal that drew Alaric to him, because what type of attack dog do you want? The strongest. Idk I’m just meditating on abuse with this one.

Half wanted Foydec as the ruler, the other half wanted Fufeyr. The kingdom was so evenly matched, it ended in a draw. The brothers finally decided to agree on something. They decided they'd each rule half of the multiverse. Fufeyr used his half for peace and research. Foydec used his have to experiment and create an army, and thought up a plan to take over the other half of the multiverse. So Foydec released his Abominations to every corner of the multiverse. They still fight to this day. A civil war. That may never end.
