I usually just reblog stuff on here, but I need to say something about the live action How To Train Your Dragon remake.
It was not needed.
And I know some of you may think "ok well, art isn't necessary to human life" but that's not what I mean.
Httyd came out in 2010. That's 14 years ago. It's animated in 3d and sure, we made some improvements, but honestly? It holds up, and really well. It has a distinct style, the designs are unique, and everything looks amazing.
We didn't need a live action remake, especially not when it looks so similar to the animated one. At this point, it's just becoming disrespectful to animation. Why make an animated movie if in less than 20 years there's gonna be a live action version? Why isn't the original one good enough?
Truth is, it's a cash grab. And everyone is falling for it, this time, because it's not Disney, because the original movie is so loved, and because it's so similar to the original one. But there was no need for this! The original one is a masterpiece that should be left alone.
That said, it's probably gonna be a spectacular movie (because it's gonna be a copy and paste of the original one...). I won't watch it.
How To Train Your Dragon was always one of my favorite movies, and to see so many people praise this....feels discouraging, as someone who loves animation this much.

Quick lighting studies of both Forbidden Friendship scenes. What are your thoughts on the remake? :O I have mixed feelings about it, but I'm happy that it's awakening my hype for HTTYD again.

Hey, Dreamworks, if you're startin' to make live action remakes, at least do films that'd be excellent in that format, like Prince of Egypt or Road to El Dorado or- oop, there ya go, choosin' How to Train Your Dragon, which will surely still be mostly CGI, yep, great -w-
At least Toothless looks accurate ;w;

never forgiving httyd for making a cat-based dragon into a dog
cats barely get representation as companions anyway since they always get designated as the evil pet. they are a little more nuanced than dogs are. they are harder to understand than dogs are. challenge yourself ! understand a cat!
toothless in httyd 1 was modeled after cats in both appearance and behavior. he distrusted hiccup and wouldn't listen to his commands, his eyes dilated and contracted depending on his mood, he flicked his ears when he heard things, he was very clear about his boundaries and needed to be bonded with in a unique way (the drawing). ffs he even eats fish and conks out if you give him a special kind of grass, he's a cat
hiccup worked to go see toothless and understand him and learn how he behaved and what he liked and didn't like. even after hiccup could ride toothless, toothless still didn't entirely obey him as seen in the astrid scene, he very much had his own ideas and personality and was doing his own thing.
in httyd 2 and 3 that all gets watered down. in the first five minutes of httyd 2 he's sticking his tongue out like a puppy, his eyes are always dilated, he loses so much of his animalistic behavior, they even make his anatomy more human (it's always bugged me that night furies have plantigrade hind legs tbh but they look more natural in httyd 1), like they give toothless in httyd 3 a fucking chest like a man and make him walk around
he completely obeys hiccup and never seems to have his own ideas or personality besides "being cute". it was so important to me that toothless was a cat and they just forgot all about that so fast
like i say they make him into a dog but saying that is also a disservice to dogs! dogs are also more interesting and nuanced and... you know... animal? than whatever toothless was in httyd 3
httyd 1 was so beautiful to me because toothless was a wild animal. toothless was a dragon.
httyd 1 was hiccup bonding with a dragon named toothless.
httyd 2 was hiccup and his flying dog.
httyd 3 was hiccup. pretty much just hiccup ! toothless and the light fury weren't characters. you need personality to be a character. sorry i really hate httyd 3.
anyway im almost entirely sure that the live action remake of httyd 1 will completely forget about toothless being a wild dragon since they already gave him httyd 3 proportions in the face so i don't have my hopes up. essay(?) over

Took a break from work and jumped on YouTube and the first thing I saw was this thumbnail for the httyd live action remake
Tumblr media
and for a second I thought this was an actual still from the movie and was willing to believe they put a man in a vaguely Scandinavian-esque sweater and gave him a fucking gun in this unnecessary ass movie. Basically:

I never want anyone to paint dreamworks as the savior of western animation ever again now that they're making live action remakes too😭

You know, in honor of the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon coming out next year, I decided to create my own poster for a live-action reboot of Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons. What do you think?:

so far, I have nothing against the live action Httyd movie. I’m sure it’ll be fine. But that’s it. There is no point to it other than money.
If the franchise wanted to create more, they could explore the world further, instead of remaking the same movie in a way that will be unsatisfying and worse than the original.
The Httyd universe doesn’t need further continuations. I say that as someone who loves Httyd, but, I feel like I’d prefer no more of it than a load of shit.
Good options for more Httyd stuff:
•Heather and Dagur spinoff, exploring their characters and their relationship/family
•A mini series (kinda like those 3 minute shorts Disney does) of the dragons doing cute things
•A Ruffnut and Tuffnut spinoff! Maybe focusing on the “Nut-Family” we hear so much about in rtte
These are just things of the top of my head, I am done with live action remakes of my beloved animated series.

I feel really bad for Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois. Together they wrote and directed both Lilo and Stitch as well as How to Train Your Dragon. Now both films are getting live action remakes despite not being that old.

Oh, there's so much about the life-action movie we've been having lately. First, the leaked frame with Toothless and Hiccup, then the first trailer (which I'll talk about much later), and now this photo from the filming, where we can see the local Astrid and Snotlout, which I'm going to talk about.
Tumblr media
Astrid, for starters. I actually really like her design from her hairstyle to her armor. Yes, it doesn't look much like the design from the original movie, but damn, the new design is still very good. I don't even have the words to say how much I like it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And also the armor design looks like something in between Hiccup's armor and Astrid's clothes from the second movie. I'm not the only one who sees the resemblance, right?
Tumblr media
Among the disadvantages of Astrid's life-action image, I can note the absence of small skulls and spikes on clothes. Like, these are important details of her image, which well showed her sharp and belligerent nature. And the fact that they are not there makes me kinda sad. And this is purely a matter of taste, but I would like her to have a blue shirt, not a red one (I never liked her red shirt).
Tumblr media
And now about Snotlout. I don't even know what to say about him. His clothing design is kinda meh. There is no hatred for the actor, but, as for me, he is too thin and small for the role of a big dumb bully. Like, I don't believe that this cute guy can bully other people, especially because of their physical strength and small build.
Tumblr media
Like, in the original, Snotlout was such a standard of appearance and behavior of the Vikings of the Berk. Big and strong, and because of it, it doesn't matter that he's dumb. And his design emphasized this well.
And here... Meh.
In fact, he looks more like 16 years old Gustav than Snotlout.

Maybe I'm just not thinking like an entertainment corporation executive, but why pour millions and millions of dollars into an artistically horrendous live-action remake when you could simply re-release the original? This is already done on a small scale (I saw the original '94 Lion King for its 30th anniversary this summer) but I bet if studios made a bigger deal out of it with marketing and such that it could be a huge financial success. After all, the main customer audience base for these remakes is millennials who grew up with the original films and want a nostalgia kick and/or for their children to experience the same film on the big screen, right? It's not as if they're rejecting the original outright. And in fact, it's a lot more socially acceptable for an adult to like family animated films now than it was a few decades ago.
Am I missing something? Does this have more to do with shareholder confidence or Hollywood egos or award nominations or something than basic logic? Literally everyone I know would be far more excited to pay money to see the original How to Train Your Dragon in theaters again than the looming uncanny valley slop. What gives?

Addendum to the borderline rant essay I put in the tags of my last reblog
if they were so dead set on making a ‘live action’ httyd they should have just MANNED UP and made the books instead of making a soulless shot for shot remake.
I want toothless to be an asshole again.

Can I say something about the remake?
I totally understand the sentiments people have that the live action is completely unnecessary and that it may just be another cash grab. I can even empathize with the public opinion that it disrespects the animated movie since it's just a scene-by-scene copy of HTTYD 1. I totally get it and if that's your opinion too then it's okay 🙂 we all have a right to express our thoughts about this movie.
Personally though, I'm just really happy that it's reignited my love and attention for this franchise. ❤️ I first fell in love with it back in high school and I'm a fully grown adult now. I did my IB thesis on the first book and have rewatched the trilogy and shows an ungodly number of times over the past decade.
Sure, I grew up and responsibilities have piled up, putting my obsession for this franchise at a backseat (including the upkeep for this blog, originally hiccupsgreeneyes). However, this movie has given me something to look forward to for the first time again in years since the trilogy ended (2019).
I wouldn't have appreciated it as much if they extended the story even more after THW because it was a good ending to the story. I really thought our anticipation days were over, and all we could do now was just revel in the movies and shows of the past. Not to say that this is a bad thing, though! Give me just the tiniest nudge and I'd watch the whole franchise again in a heartbeat.
All I'm saying is that it's possible to love one thing without having to hate on the other. We can embrace both past and future projects so long as we enjoy them. Having Dean direct it again means that it will be loyal to the source material and that the movie will be in good hands.
Watching the trailer made my cry so much because, while I already know what's going to happen in the movie, I felt that genuine sense of child-like excitement once again for a boy and his dragon who I both hold so deeply in my heart.
Writing this half asleep and relying on auto correct but I just wanted to pour my thoughts and emotions into this post because I care about this show so much, and HTTYD 1 was just so beautiful and iconic that I can't really think of anything awful to say except I can't wait to see it and how they bring my babies back to (real) life.
Comment down below though on your thoughts, I'd love to have a friendly discussion about this! This may be the perfect opportunity for me to reignite some activity into this blog again. 😋
---
PS, I don't want to seem like I'm riding on a high horse here. While yes, I do love the franchise, I did not and will not watch the toddler show.
PPS, On the subject of loving both past and future projects, this SO does not apply to the Snow White remake. They just did my girl dirty.

Please tell me I'm not the only one unhappy that they're remaking this?
Not only was the original a masterpiece (as well as its sequels) and was so clearly meant for animation not live-action, but it only came out 14 years ago! That's not enough time for a remake to be nostalgic in any way, at least in my book, but I'm a 27-year-old and 1997 baby, so maybe that's just me.
Regardless, I would much rather the original versions were supported over this. Why reboot something that was already perfect? It's like Avatar The Last Airbender all over again.
