Head empty, only plants. Shouldn’t I be gardening? (It’s too difficult!) Besides, these little beebs are so obedient. And happy. And less punishing on my back.
Hoyas are still my plants. But there is room for succulents and a few choice ferns.
My room is a cacophony of smells: I have 6 (going on 8) Hoyas blooming. Stinky! This year they’re all taking off; I’ve only got 4 out of 18 left to bloom!

I don't usually post about my plant collection, but my hoya linearis is blooming and I'm so happy. I wasn't even sure I could keep it alive. 🥺

2024 Planty Update: Year in Review
Background: Prior to March 2020, my partner and I had a few houseplants: two spider plants, an african violet, lucky bamboo, a coleus, some sort of ivy, and a couple of succulents. We started collecting Sansevieria and two "Corn Plant" Dracaena early in the pandemic. Then, during the summer of 2022, I caught the houseplant bug. HARD. (Yes, it was a Monstera) That same winter, my partner was working full-time and taking classes, so I became the primary plant carer in our household.
As of October 2024, I am caring for 50 "indoor" houseplants. I am putting "indoors" in parentheses because many of my plants live outside for the warm season (about half of my collection). This currently includes a tiny English Lavender plant that was in a pot and too small to be transplanted and survive the winter. It also includes an entire pot of lemon seedlings, which I will need to rehome sometime soon.
My "permanent collection" includes 12 Hoya, 11 Dracaena (Corn Plants, Lucky Bamboo, and Snake Plants), 3 Begonia (two cane and one rex), 3 African violets, 2 Philodendron, 2 Schlumbergera, 2 Scindapsus, 2 pothos, a Spider Plant, an Aloe vera, a Gasteria, a tiny jade plant, a lemon we are trying to bonsai, a Discidia, a cyclamen, a Monstera adensonaii, a fishbone cactus, and a Pepperomia.
For the most part, this was a great growing season, and my plants are doing very well. The spider plant and Philo Basil are being rehabbed for root rot issues, and my Hoya publicalyx is still outside because it's got aphids.
My goals for 2024 were:
Figure out how to get my Philodendron "Painted Lady" to grow well (done)
Learn to trellis Hoya in an attempt to tame them (done)
Grow my Golden Pothos up my wall (failed and rehomed)
Master trimming cane Begonias (eh - I mostly just let them grow)
Flowers on my Hoya (success, sort of, though not the expected one)
Work on coleus care (eh, its just really not an inside plant but my partner insists on keeping it)
"the great repotting" (done)
Over summer my cyclamen successfully (done)
Turn my front porch into an outside growing space (done)
I also wanted to try out different-leaved Hoyas, a Philodendron Brasil, and possibly a Rhypsalis. I ended up with the Philo (see above: that's not going well), a Hoya linearis, and two smaller-leaved Hoyas. Instead of a Rhypasalis, I got a fishbone cactus.
My favorite houseplants for the growing season are as follows (in no particular order:
Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' wins for Biggest Surprise as it grew two nearly white leaves.
Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' wins for Prettiest Leaves because those silver speckles leaves are outstanding.
Philodendron erubescens "Painted Lady" wins for Best Glow Up because it was on the struggle bus last spring and is now growing leaves out of their own cataphylls (a sign of maturity).
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' (formerly Sanserveria trifasciata) wins for Best Form because, wow, it looks like the perfect sculpture.
Hylocereus undatus 'Dragon Fruit Cactus' wins for Biggest Weirdo because it so wild.
Honorable mention goes to a two-way tie for Best Plant Pot Combo, with my NOID African Violet in its perfect pink pot and my Hoya 'Mathilde' cascading like a dream out of its mushroom pot.
My favorite genus is Hoya, followed by a tie between Scindapsus and Begonia. As a general grouping of plants, I prefer epiphytes and semi-epiphytes. I'd love to add more jungle cacti and an orchid or two to my collection. But for now, I am completely out of room, and (most) of my houseplants will keep growing!

after picking up the adansonii i visited a plant shop my therapist recommended and while some of their stuff was overpriced some stuff was surprisingly well priced
got a cute little string of turtles that has been on my wishlist for a while for now its in the bathroom but hopefully i can make some room for it in my bedroom with the rest of the plants
also got this syngonium im not sure what type but i think it's the one i loved and accidentally overwatered and killed a few weeks ago 😭 it was really small just 3 leafs or so and i repotted it cause it came in a clear cup with no drainage... and i think the repotting and watering killed it 🥲 killed by what i was trying to avoid. ive been missing it so i was really happy to see it at the store and immidiately grabbed it its quite big too. i assume it needs bright light for the leafs so hopefully the spot i picked is enough 🤔 it's a little tucked into a corner but u have a south window with barely anything blocking the sun it gets mega bright in here so fingers crossed it wont need to move
my first time seeing a scindapsus exotica and its leafs were huge!!! especially on the bigger mature plants but theyre were too expensive for me. i opted for a juvenile instead and it had a yellow leaf that was concerning but i asked the workers and they said it's fine and the plant itself is heathy it's just an old leaf. hopefully theyre right but the plant does look healthy otherwise. it stormed all of the sudden on the way home and it fell off from the rain so guess it took care of itself
also saw Huge silvery anns with palm sized leafs and i was sooo tempted but decided since i already spend 20€ i cant buy more and the other plants i wanted more... so i snipped off a vine lol it's always morally correct to proplift from chains 💚 i saw a whole bucket of broken off vines in a corner and so many broken off leafs it might as well have happened while someone more clumsy was handling it. did the same to a donkeys tail and found some broken off leafs next to it that i grabbed. also found these two peperomia watermelon leafs on the ground im gonna try propping too :) the stem is a scindapsus exotica i too found on the ground, left it in the prop box hoping to get a plant i can gift away to friend
the store also had a hoya linearis that is on my wishlist but it was 17€ and rlly sparse and had these black spots on its leafs and stems i decided to leave it behind. didn't seem worth the price especially cause the online marketplace i use has cuttings for 1€. guess when fools spring season is over and its actually warm here i can just order some cuttings and grow my own for way less :p plus at the moment i got no way to hang plants so i would've struggled giving it what it needs.
also saw two huge beauties i just had to snap a photo of: a big mature monstera thai constellation and the biggest pothos i have ever seen in my life

I have.... Not a few hoya plants😅 This is fifteen out of thirty six (probably)
I LIKE slow-growing plants, I have a small home and not a lot of shelf space! Unfortunately my hoya collection have other ideas and grow like they are being paid for it😒
I blame the turtle-provided fertilizer and lack of any discernable winter in this climate.

Hoya haul! This month has been a good month for hoya! I can not believe it, but my local nursery got in Hoya Australis Lisa, Hoya Curtisii splash, Hoya Macrophylla Variegata, and Hoya Linearis! And they were all actually affordable, I’m blown away! They also had a bunch of absolutely beautiful krimson queens and princesses and some variegated wayetii and other stuff that I didn’t take pictures of, but here are the beautiful uncommon babs I took home with me! :)

A collection of plants that do not understand that it is January. There are so many more being weirdly productive that I don’t have good photos of yet. (Ludisias/a few more Hoyas/aloes mostly.) I’m stupid proud of my Hoya callistophylla (last photo) for deciding that the dead of winter is the perfect time to start on 4 new leaves (you can see three of them in the photo).
It’s just shy of bone dry in the house, but no one really seems to be giving a shit. Everyone who needs it just gets extra water. They’re all warm enough and getting enough good light, so there’s no reason to take a break, I guess.
I like winter, but it’s nice to have a little green growth at one’s fingertips. Very restorative, but also a lot of work.

So my partner and I are doing a bit of kitchen reorganizing so we drove to IKEA, so of course I had to stop at the plant shop I’ve heard so much about and I ended up buying a Hoya linearis so then I spent three hours wandered around IKEA with a plant because it’s way too hot to leave it in the car.
