These past few months have been challenging physically and emotionally. Calicific tendinitis in my shoulder. I was hoping to get a bionic arm out of the deal, but the doctor suggested physical therapy instead. I’m still doing that. Next physical therapy on my hands - The Money Maker!😰 One step away from pneumonia and almost dying. Well… it wasn’t that dramatic, but it could have been. My brother Michael dying and he was nowhere near pneumonia. Quite unexpected to everyone.😢 One visit to the emergency room. Second time this year or was it three? I really hope that doesn’t become a habit.😳 Falling behind on my work. This week I finally had a chance to take a breath and regroup. The semester is over, teaching is done. Completed work for clients. Starting work for more. Getting my own projects back on track. Even though there’s an MRI in my future (‘Let’s just skip that Doc. I can tell you I’m crazy, let’s go right to electro shock therapy.’) I am looking to the future with hope and a smile. The world’s a circus, let’s have fun! Chadwick Boseman went on to glory last Friday. He was an actor who played strong black men in movies. Some of those men existed in real life like Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown. One only existed as a comic book character – The Black Panther; King T'Challa. He brought that character to life on the big screen and helped created a cultural phenomenon. Comic books are an integral part of my life. I learned how to read from comics. Comics helped make me who I am today. I didn't know I was growing up in a time of firsts. The first black person to do this and that, etc. I was the first person in my family to graduate from college. When I was younger, I wasn't aware of these firsts. Such as, I didn't know Black Panther was the first black superhero. I learned later about that and many others. The first Avengers movie was the comic book movie the 12-year-old boy in me had been waiting for all of his life. The Black Panther movie was the movie I never expected to see. I never even dreamed of it. Chadwick Boseman led other black actors into bringing the world I had only read about to life. He was regal, proud, and strong. Turns out he was a hero in real life too, as he was undergoing cancer treatment while he made that and five other movies. Seeing him play the black Panther was very inspiring and uplifting to me. Knowing what he went through privately has touched me on a very personal level. I was shocked and devastated to find out he was gone. So young, with so much more to contribute to the entertainment and real world. Thanks for helping this little kid and many more to see black people as superheroes.
