The Witches (1990)
This film is directed by Nicolas Roeg released on May 25, 1990 distributed by Warner Bros. This film has a special place in my heart because it was one of those films I would watch so many times as a kid, that it is just so nostalgic at this point regardless if it is good or bad lol. Throughout Quarantine I have been watching quite a lot of movies and since I got myself a new projector, I have been setting up an outdoor theater in my backyard. Best investment hands down. So, my friend who has also been quarantining came over for movie night, practicing social distancing and wearing our masks, they were not allowed in the house so we went to the backyard where I set up the projector. Now I didn’t have any real intention to search for the film to begin with, we just turned on the projector, hooked it up to my firestick, and turned on Netflix. Once I saw it available to stream, I let out a huge gasp and forced my friend to watch it. They were pretty hesitant but the fact that Anjelica Huston was top billed, they were sold.
Now the film itself is about a 9 year old boy named Luke who lives with his grandmother and they go on a vacation to a hotel. This hotel just so happens to be hosting the annual witch convention during the same time of Luke’s stay. Now growing up, Luke’s grandmother would always warn him about witches so he’s been pretty cautious. When they get to the hotel, Luke realizes there are witches at the hotel plotting something maniacal so he takes it upon himself to try to foil their plan.
What makes this film great in my opinion is that it was produced by Jim Henson Productions and we all know how great Henson is with dark fantasy, it is very notable with the use of animatronics used for mice. Although the animatronics do look fake obviously, there were some good emotions coming through. I don’t mean based off the acting, but the actual puppeteering of the animatronics themselves. And the editing between the real mice and animatronic mice was very smooth, as well as this scene where Anjelica Huston is changing a mask, it was so smooth that we had to rewind it to see how and what they did (it was a hidden cut) but it was a tight cut.
As for more technical analyzing, the camera work left much to be desired. The film seemed to have been filmed in a style suited for a “made for TV” film rather than something you would find in theaters. The writing was very well done, it hit all the necessary points and kept us hooked the entire time. The pacing was great considering a majority of the film takes place in a single day, although my friend felt that Anjelica should have had more costume changes throughout the day and I agree since she does have at least 3 different events she attends.
I was worried it would be one of those movies that you always thought was so good as a kid and when you got older you realize you were completely wrong when you tried to show it to your friends, but my friend actually enjoyed it and I still don’t see anything bad about it. I mean it needed a diverse cast no doubt and more women casted because when they were in the conference scene, there were clearly men in wigs and dresses. But you should definitely give this film a watch while it is on Netflix for some gold old 90′s dark fantasy.
