Listen to me, you don’t understand.
CollegeEra!Zayne not only feeling mentally exhausted but also always feeling too big for his britches.
(Buckle in, gang, this is going to be long.)
This man sped-ran the majority of his academic career. I looked it up: apparently you get go straight into med school after high school in China (which is where I am basing all of this out of since LaDS is a Chinese game, please excuse the Quora link).Considering he is twenty-seven at the start of the game, he would be graduating high school at the MAXIMUM age of seventeen, just to get catapulted into what is called a “5+3” degree. Five years to get a doctorate, and three years of residency. Now, for the record, those last three years are ones that you cannot — and I mean can NOT — blow through like you can the rest of the academic process, so those years are set in stone.
But based off of multiple memories we can unlock with Zayne, we know that he got to his doctorate at an accelerated pace via former classmate and professor testimony. So, for the sake of argument, let’s say he got it in three years. That has him finishing up his residency at 24. So the next three years are spent building a professional reputation, getting all of those awards, and doing independent study with Dr. Noah before the beginning of the game takes place.
But wait, this could be even further accelerated!!
According to the game, MC and Zayne became proper friends when they were about 11-12. That is the very, very end of Chinese primary school. Which means from that point onward, Zayne is putting his nose to the pavement (or parchment, because books, aha) and grinding to become a doctor. Secondary-school lasts from twelve to fifteen. Three years. Let’s say he halves that time, clearing it in a year and a half, rounding to “a grade” since he can work through summer. So, he’s thirteen going into what is considered “senior” secondary school, basically high school. Let’s say he burns through that, too. Usually it’s from fifteen to eighteen. So, four years? Clear it in two.
That would make him fucking fifteen going into university for his doctorate, clearing that in three like I mentioned, and then the unchangable three years of residency. That man could be as young as twenty-freaking-one when he walks out of residency, which would give him five whole gods-diddly-damn years to be working full-time, professionally. Plenty of time to rack up those accolades and to become the head of his department, no?
So I am literally begging you to imagine meeting college!Zayne and realizing, oh shit, that guy is a child. He would have been going into his residency at eighteen years old. He is not only young but he is probably exhausted, definitely not eating well. And exercise?! With what time?? Him being a skinny-mini is absolutely not a stretch.
And, Astra above, is he aware of it. He feels so freaking small. The idea of being physically capable enough (for a certain MC ahEM) would weigh on him like a tonne. I don’t know how, but I can only assume it would be during his residency that he all-but forces himself to bulk up.
He would probably be in his very early twenties while going through the mass trauma of Mt. Eternal. By then, he’s acting as a war doctor. He has to be physically strong enough to do that. To hold a gun. To pull bodies where they need to be. And somewhere in all of that, mind you, he is getting word from a certain someone about what is going on with the girl he’s doing all of this for and what her condition actually entails. That’s a massive mental load on top of it all!
It’s probably only by the time we finally meet him at 27 that hens had the freaking time to be away from all of that trauma, to kick himself into eating and sleeping a half-decent amount, and maybe — MAYBE — have time for a social life.
And then MC is in his life, forcing him to slow down. Even with the undeniable weight of everything he knows about MC and her condition. He has managed to somehow, someway, get himself to a place professionally wherein he has the authority to take the time off he needs. To rest. To make his schedule as he sees fit. To breathe, to live, to take things at a pace that the rest of the world does. He has the time, space, and energy to finally fill out around those tired, weary bones. He grows into himself, in infinitely more ways than one.
