‘Do memes (as it is popular in Malaysian politics) provide a useful way of understanding politics?’
MDA 20009 Digital Communities
Hello everyone, today we are going to dive into a rather interesting topic in youth trends. Enjoy reading! <3
Whenever people chat, post videos or write blogs, they insert memes to add interest to the content. In recent years, memes have become popular not only in the social media culture but also in the political arena, and Malaysia is no exception. In fact, there has been a surge in the use of memes to convey complex political messages in the Malaysian political arena. But do these memes really help us understand politics better?
What’s Meme?
Before we delve into the meme culture in Malaysia and its impact on political participation, let's take a look at this video by BBC Ideas.
youtube
The video explores the history and definition of meme in depth. From the video, the interviewer defines meme in various ways:
“meme can say a lot more than one sentence as well” “A written joke that’s related to something that happens in real life” “links with ironic attitude to everything, where you can express your disdain, disappointment, a lack of trust in something”
The term ‘meme’ was first coined by biologist Richard Dawkins in 1976, in his book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins describes a meme as a unit of cultural transmission or mimicry, which can be an idea, behavior or style that spreads through a culture. Today, the concept has been applied to the digital age, where meme resonates with Internet users as a quick, shareable idea (BBC Ideas, 2020).
In simple terms, a meme is an expression of a person's opinion about something or a person's behavior using a combination between images, text, and video, which can take many forms such as a story, irony, or sarcasm. A meme politics is a meme that contains a political character (person/thing).
Memes: A Modern Political Tool
In Malaysia, young people discuss and display politics on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in a variety of ways that reflect public sentiments and criticisms, such as ‘meme politics’ (meme politics).
As refer to the study by Nizah et al. (2024), ‘memes’ are currently one of the newest forms of saturation communication. During the 2014 presidential election, a large number of ‘meme’ cartoons appeared on the Indonesian Internet and played an important role in the country's political discourse (Aminulloh et al.)
Another example is that during the 2018 general election, netizens created memes to mock and criticize the then-ruling BN party, and memes mocking government policies became viral, pushing the younger generation to engage in political discussions and even motivating voters to vote.
This illustrates how internet memes can be used as a tool for political education, especially among internet-savvy young Malaysians.
Are Memes Really Helping Us Understand Politics?
One of the main benefits of ‘memes’ in a political context is the ability to take issues that are usually complex, heavy, and difficult for the average person to engage with such topics as economic reform, election scandals, and government policies, and break them down into easily digestible forms that become more accessible when translated into shareable comedic images.
Political memes can indeed lower the barriers to political and the sense of humor displayed in political discourse through memes increases the public's willingness to discuss political issues, which is important in countries where politics can be sensitive. Furthermore, memes are easy to share, so anyone can join the conversation.
According to Walter et al. (2018), humor has a slight but significant effect on persuasion, a moderate effect on awareness, and a slight effect on attitudes and behavioral intentions. Humor was also more effective for individuals who were highly engaged in politics. For individuals who are less politically engaged and not interested in politics, presenting politics in an entertaining or humorous way may motivate them to acquire additional political information, which is known as the ‘gateway effect’. The most critical feature of humor is its ability to enhance the reputation of the source. Gruner (2017) has found that the ability of humor can enhance the source’s reputation as it allows people to equate a humorous source with strong credibility, even though it is unrelated. In addition, humor is associated with a latent effect, whereby humor is associated with low levels of source credibility, but steadily increases as the audience separates the source from the message (Kasmani, F. 2022). These findings suggest that humor is influential in persuasion and political communication.
Furthermore, memes are emotionally appealing and accessible, capitalizing on anti-establishment sentiments and discontent with the political class to evoke a sense of a positive future. Donald Trump's slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) became a memes after it was first coined during Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign. Influenced by the catchphrase, citizens have worn ‘MAGA’ merchandise or vented their anger under the official hashtag #MAGA, expecting recognition from those who feel the same way. The hashtag not only provides an easy way for people to gain satisfaction and self-affirmation, but also allows users to incorporate the rebellious colours of heroism into their personal image (Helferich & Helferich, 2022).
Memes favor the rapid diffusion of ideas (Denisova, 2016) and can therefore enable online activists to quickly initiate and spread dialogue about neglected political issues (Moreno-Almeida, 2021). Plus, political memes do spread awareness of political issues (Miltner, 2018). Milner (2013) has also illustrated an example, the Occupy Wall Street memes disseminated information related to the movement and stimulated dialogue between social media users of different political stances (Helferich & Helferich, 2022).
“Memes can be a double-edged sword - on the one hand, memes make content more relatable and accessible, but on the other hand, memes can sometimes oversimplify complex issues or spread misinformation.”
While memes can draw attention to political issues, they have their limitations. One major problem is that humor or sarcasm in memes tends to oversimplify issues, which can lead to misunderstandings. The sharing of political memes without context can lead to the spread of misinformation or misinterpretation of political events. Additionally, the amplification of popular opinions in news phrases hinders nuanced political discussion. Studies have identified misinformation and low-level policy information in memes, indicating that they are unlikely to enhance political knowledge (Dupuis & Williams, 2019; McLoughlin & Southern, 2020) (Halversen & Weeks, 2023).
Conclusion
In summary, it seems fair to suggest that the meme is an interactive medium for citizens to comment on politics, and that it undoubtedly plays an important role in Malaysian politics. It has made political information more accessible and engaging, and they provide citizens with a platform to express their opinions and participate in political discussions, especially for those who may not be familiar with formal political debates. However, it is important to exercise caution when engaging with political memes. While they can be a useful tool for understanding politics, they may not always provide comprehensive or accurate information. To gain a deeper understanding of politics, it is essential to complement memes with more detailed, fact-based sources of information.
Well done!! You have reached the end of this blog ^^
What do you think? Are memes helping or hurting political discourse in Malaysia? For me, I think it does raise awareness of political participation. However, I think people should endeavour to address the cause of the problem itself instead of blaming others for their mistakes and avoid cyber-attacks to create a peaceful environment for digital platforms.
I hope you've gained something here and see ya in the next post <333

The Growing Trend of Cat and Coffee Apparel
There’s no denying that coffee and cats have become a huge part of modern culture. Coffee represents comfort and energy, while cats embody relaxation and companionship. Together, they create a perfect harmony that resonates with millions of people worldwide.

The design possibilities for coffee and my cat t-shirts are nearly endless, making it easy to find one that perfectly suits your taste. Here are some of the most popular designs available:
Simple Text Designs: Sometimes, less is more. T-shirts featuring simple phrases like "Coffee & Cats" or "This Is My Coffee and Cat Shirt" are straightforward yet impactful. These minimalist designs are perfect for those who prefer subtle, clean looks while still showcasing their love for coffee and cats.
Funny and Punny T-Shirts: Humor plays a big role in coffee and cat-themed shirts. You can find t-shirts with witty puns like “Feline Caffeinated” or “Purrfectly Brewed,” combining the love for cats with coffee-related jokes. These designs are ideal for cat lovers who also have a good sense of humor and enjoy making others smile.
Illustrative Designs: If you love art or graphic tees, there are countless options featuring cute or artistic illustrations of cats and coffee cups. Some designs might show a cat perched on top of a coffee mug, while others depict a cat curiously peering into a steaming cup of coffee. These t-shirts often come with vibrant colors or artistic styles, making them a great option for those who want to stand out.
Cartoon Cat Characters: Many coffee and cat t-shirts feature cartoon versions of cats, making them playful and fun. Whether it’s a cartoon cat with sleepy eyes holding a coffee cup or a group of animated cats surrounding a pot of coffee, these designs are both adorable and lighthearted.
Customizable Options: For a personal touch, many retailers offer customizable coffee and cat t-shirts. You can add your own cat’s name, change the colors, or even include a photo of your furry friend. This option is perfect for those who want a truly unique shirt that reflects their specific love for their own cat.
How to Style a Coffee and My Cat T-Shirt
One of the best things about t-shirts is their versatility. Whether you’re going for a casual look or want to dress it up a bit, a coffee and my cat t-shirt can fit into various outfits. Here are some styling tips to get the most out of your shirt:
Casual Day Look: For a laid-back day at home or out and about, pair your t-shirt with comfy jeans and sneakers. Add a flannel or cardigan on cooler days, and you’re set for a cozy and relaxed outfit. This is perfect for grabbing coffee with friends or running errands.
Layered for Colder Weather: As temperatures drop, you can easily layer your coffee and cat t-shirt with a denim jacket or oversized sweater. Add a scarf and ankle boots, and you’ve got a warm yet stylish look for fall or winter.
Work-from-Home Comfort: If you’re working from home or spending the day with your cat, comfort is key. Pair your t-shirt with cozy joggers or leggings and some fuzzy slippers. You’ll be comfortable all day while still showing off your love for coffee and cats.
Dressed-Up Casual: Want to elevate your coffee and my cat t-shirt for a casual yet chic look? Try pairing it with a midi skirt and flats. Add some dainty jewelry and a cute crossbody bag, and you’ve got a stylish outfit for casual gatherings or lunch dates.

Specialty Cat Stores: Some online stores cater specifically to cat lovers, offering a variety of cat-themed apparel, including coffee and my cat t-shirts. Stores like Meowingtons and The Cat’s Meow Shop offer unique designs tailored to feline fanatics.
Custom T-Shirt Shops: If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind design or want to personalize a shirt with your cat’s name or photo, custom t-shirt shops like Zazzle or TeeSpring allow you to create your own. This option is ideal for those who want something truly special.
Local Boutiques: Support local businesses by checking out nearby boutiques. Many small shops carry themed t-shirts that reflect local culture, and you might find a hidden gem featuring coffee and cat designs.
Caring for Your Coffee and My Cat T-Shirt
To ensure your coffee and cat t-shirt stays in good condition for years to come, proper care is essential. Here are some tips:
Follow Care Instructions: Always check the label for washing instructions. Most t-shirts should be washed in cold water and turned inside out to protect any prints or designs.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Use mild detergents, and avoid bleach or fabric softeners, as these can wear down the fabric and fade the design.
Air Dry or Use Low Heat: To prevent shrinking or damage to the print, air dry your t-shirt or use a low heat setting in the dryer.
Conclusion
For cat lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike, a coffee and my cat t-shirt is more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a reflection of your passions and a fun way to showcase what you love. With so many designs and styles to choose from, finding the perfect t-shirt that suits your personality is easy. Whether you’re wearing it casually at home, out for coffee with friends, or even dressing it up for a day out, these t-shirts are as versatile as they are adorable. So why not combine your love for coffee and your feline friend into one stylish and comfy outfit?

Printing a photo on a t-shirt is just about the best thing you can do with your shirt. Whether it's a snapshot of a loved one, a favorite place, or some kind of memorable moment, photo prints give an extra special touch to your t-shirt printing project. Photo tees are also popular for special events that you want to remember. This makes the photo tees not only meaningful but very stylish as well.
10. Mix and Match Styles
This can make a truly unique printed t-shirt by combining two different styles. Mix text with illustrations, or abstract art with geometric patterns, or take nature themes and combine them with pop culture references. This approach really lets you get as creative as possible and design an even-layered and complex printed tee full of character. Such an approach is ideal for people who do not believe in holding themselves back and like to make a statement.

Hyperbole & A Half; Illustrated Novels as Gateways to More Traditional Comics
Hyperbole and a Half, autobiographical webcomic blog, turned illustrated novel; One! Hundred! Demons!, autobiographical comic compilation of personal “demons;” both detail the funny, heartwarming, and often ugly parts of the human experience as they unfold for each author as an individual. Both are told in short story form, with an intra-homodiagetic narrator (the author serves as both narrator and active character), accompanied by illustrated panels that invoke a sense of physical and emotional movement that the reader can easily conceptualize. With so many major similarities, why does each work receive such different classifications? What makes a comic a comic and not an illustrated novel? How do these seemingly disparate definitions affect the way we read them? Can illustrated novels be considered gateway materials to comics? I think so. Before we jump into that exact why, let’s look at the defining characteristics of comics.
Text, images, and some semblance of sequential flow in time and space are the most major markers of comics, utilized throughout history, found in ancient work like Egyptian tomb paintings all the way up to modern comics and manga. Speech bubbles erupt from the mouths of static character images, narration is often delineated by straight-lined boxes and a change in tone, real movement through space and time happens in the empty “gutters” between panels. Although illustrated novels and comics are constructed differently, they are still processed in the brain in fundamentally the same way. Children’s literacy researcher, Evelyn Arizpe, notes that when reading illustrated stories, regardless of form (comics or traditional storybooks), “the eye moves between one part of the picture and another, piecing together the image like a puzzle.” If picture books and comics are processed in the brain in the same way, why are they considered different mediums? Linguist and cognitive scientist, Neil Cohn, applies his academic specialties to comics, attributing the difference to things like panel placement and what he calls “navigational structure,” the direction our eyes track when piecing images in a comic together to create a sense of coherence when reading.
Traditional storybooks, unlike comics, typically utilize one image per page to convey everything from character relationships to arrested motion; comics achieve a more fluid and nuanced version of this by using panels as snapshots or windows into character worlds. Where then does the illustrated novel fall between these two states, and where does Hyperbole and a Half land? Illustrated novels rely more heavily on the text narrative of the story and the readers imagination, associated images usually only serve to enhance the story world or solidify ideas and images that would otherwise be difficult to conceptualize or to emphasize an exciting or emotional moment in the narrative. Hyperbole and a Half leans more heavily toward the multiple-panel style of comics to help amplify the narrative. Perhaps this stems from the novel’s genesis as a blog-turned-book. In 2009, Hyperbole and a Half author, Allie Brosh began a blog of the same name, where she chronicled events from her personal life, like the adoption of one of her two dogs; illustrated pet peeves, like the internet usage of “alot,” a misspelling of “a lot,” personified as a shaggy, fang-toothed monster; or her fear of spiders, captured by an image of an oval with spindly appendages replete with strapped-on knives, guns, and a swastika tattooed above the eyes. Brosh’s book maintains the same familiar tone, regularly interspersing images meticulously drawn by the author herself. Her use of illustrated images that convey character motion, emotional state, and even dialogue exchanges are reminiscent of both regular comics and contemporary memes.
In Brosh’s chapter titled “Motivation,” she chronicles her own struggle with self-starting and follow-through. She illustrates a frequent conversation she has between the “her” who knows she must complete a task, and the “her” who continues to procrastinate for no conceivable reason. Instead of floating thought bubbles, she makes this conversation concrete by utilizing a kind of split screen effect, where both versions of herself take up space within the same panel, as does their dialogue.
Most of Brosh’s panels behave in the same way, providing the reader with concrete examples of often abstract concepts, like internal monologue and discussions with oneself.
One! Hundred! Demons!author, Lynda Barry, achieves this same concept by forcefully changing the reader’s perspective. As she reveals the story of her struggle with impostor syndrome as an author and her childhood tendency to let her imagination run away with the descriptions in the Classified section of the newspaper, the reader follows her through her childhood musings and is dropped into the middle of one of her fantastical plots.
Only when Barry transitions back to a narrative focused on her own more present-tense position as a narrator do we as readers get dragged back into the present-past-tense of her childhood self.
Brosh maintains a slightly smoother sense of temporal immediacy by clumping her panels in “Motivation” together, as one “Motivation Game.” Readers are taken along the same journey, into and back out of, the author’s imagination and altered psychological state, but Barry’s follows tactics familiar to comic readers, while Brosh blurs those lines a bit for readers unused to comics.
This difference in delivery of the protagonist’s inner-world carries over into the way dialogue is associated with each character as well. In the above examples, from One! Hundred! Demons!, Barry uses the classic speech bubbles historically associated with comics; Brosh, on the other hand, utilizes both classic speech bubbles as well as free-floating text that the reader infers to be audible speech through context clues.
In the chapter “The Helper Dog is an Asshole,” Brosh retells the story of her and her partner’s adoption of a second issue-riddled shelter dog. She uses both dialogue vehicles on one page, in succession, the traditional speech bubbles allow each character in the top panel to convey separate thoughts, while the speech in the middle panel is only spoken by Brosh’s caricature of herself, as she is the only character “facing” the audience.
Brosh utilizes a similarly comic-style tactic when expressing active motion or a change in mental or emotional state. In “The God of Cake,” she recounts a childhood obsession with conquering her mothers demands that she not decimate her grandfather’s homemade birthday cake with her youthful inability to control her own sugar intake. She masterfully illustrates this rapid descent into the kind of one-track-minded madness only children ever master with a four-page sequence of successively blurry panels.
No, that’s not a mistake of my scanner, it’s printed that way in the book; while a little difficult to read, I think it conveys an emotional whirlwind with an immediacy that helps the reader understand just how much untamed tenacity is bubbling beneath the surface for this child character through the remainder of this chapter.
Another tactic that Brosh employs, that seems like a holdover from her work’s origin as an online blog, is her use of a colored filter over a panel to illustrate distress or another intense emotion. In the same chapter retelling her story of the “helper dog,” Brosh lists the myriad and often confounding behavior issues the new dog frequently displays, like her visceral and adverse reaction to other dogs. Brosh posits that the new dog must simply be unable to comprehend or abide by the fundamental existence of other dogs in the world. To depict the abrupt and unpredictable change in this dog’s mental state, Brosh uses a red tinted filter, along with grumpy-looking smiley faces and hand-written text over her base illustration of her new dog lunging toward another dog in the distance, teeth bared.
You can almost hear the Kill Bill sirens going off in the background.
While Brosh’s artistic approach is reminiscent of internet memes, it also resembles the cartoon-y illustrated style of altered mental states in comics. In One! Hundred! Demons!, Barry juxtaposes alternating bright contrasting colors with radiating squiggly lines in a few of her panels to symbolize the acid trip she and her truncated crush are having on their roam through China Town and Skid Row.
Instead of giving the audience a sense of almost seeing through the perspective of her dog’s psyche, like Brosh does, Barry’s interpretation of her own childhood experience makes the reader feel a little like a sober friend along for the ride, understanding what’s happening, but not able to reach quite the same level of empathy.
Although comics are typically regarded as a reading material relegated to childhood hobbies, books that fall between the borders of comics and illustrated novels, like Hyperbole and a Half, prove their usefulness as a narrative medium, and for readers afraid of being seen reading a full-blown comic—or have never even attempted it, can consider them the shallow end of the comics pool, a lighter commitment than the image-heavy ocean of traditional comics.

Character designers that I like.
(*Text underneath for readability)
Jeff Merghart
I like this designer because they seem to follow a similar process to what we have been doing in class, sketching and linework first, then tone/values, and then colour. I also like their style, it is illustrative and portrays not only humans but also, animals with human like attributes. Another thing I like is how they have kept their outlines on the finished drawings, similar to what I have done. The characters seem to have a strong silhouette and personality, which I think is important to have.
Samuel Suarez
I like this designer because they also seem to follow a similar process. The main thing that I like about their work is how they have used blending and shading; this is something I might try in the future. I like how all of the colours and shades blend together. Their style is cartoony, but it is also realistic in the way that they have executed their designs. I like this because it is a good combination of cartoon and realistic style. Another thing that I like is how they have added shadows underneath their characters, this could also be good to try.
Erika Worthylake
I like this artist because they have a wide variety of variations of equine drawings. There is a lot of diversity in their work, the characters range in sizes and styles. I used this artist as a reference when I was creating my horse/mule character. I also think that this artist captures the character’s expressions and emotions well. I especially like the broad range of shapes and their linework. The way they have drawn the colours and shading two dimensional is similar to what my characters have been like so far.
Guille Rancel
I like this artist because they have a unique style, and their characters are people, but they are accompanied by other creatures. This is something I would like to try, so that I can design both people and animals together. I also like how colourful their work is and I like how they’ve used backgrounds. Some of their backgrounds are very detailed and some are plain colour backgrounds, but not white. The background on the third image is my favourite, I would like to try something like that in some of my work.
Carlos Luzzi
I like this designer because they capture feelings and expressions well. I like how they use shapes to inform what the character’s personalities are. I also like how detailed their work is, and they use colour in a very effective way, the variation in line weight is also used very well. I like how they have done their shading as well, it’s like a mixture of colour blocking and blending. Another thing I like is the way they have added clothing and accessories to exaggerate the character’s personalities.
James Woods
I like this designer because they have a wide variety of shapes that depict the character’s persona. I also like the way they have added clothing, it adds to the silhouette and is very detailed. I also like their linework, it has good variations in weight. They have also seemed to have added textures by using colour, I think this is something that I would like to try as well. I also like how they have characters paired together, they complement each other, I especially like the range of height and volume within these characters.

Who am I as an Artist? Moving Forward
There are so many different methods of printmaking, each with their own character and charms. Linocut prints producing patchy and carefree prints, etching specialising in tone and monoprints creating one-of-a-kind pieces each time. I am personally most inspired by screen printing, also known as silkscreen printing. Screen printing is a form of printing using a screen made of stretched fabric and a frame1. The artist creates a stencil by applying glue, film/paper or photoresist to the areas of the screen that they don’t want printed, then smears ink through the untouched parts of the screen to create a print. This method is primarily used on paper and fabric; however, it is possible to print on other materials such as wood and metal if using specific inks. Screen printing is wildly popular due to its ability to print bright and even colours regardless of the surface2. Screen printing works similarly to a reduction print, creating multidimensional art using layers rather than tone and shading. It is also praised for its ability to produce identical prints in little to no time, making it a key method in the mass production for the likes of posters. Screen printing started being used in the 1920’s for advertisements, even though the method dates all the way back to 221 AD China3, and was being used by artists only 10 years later. By the 1950’s, screen printing had become a widely appreciated media amongst artists. During the 1960’s, screen printing boomed in popularity after pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Harring used it for their designs4. Screen printing was the prime medium for the pop art movement because of the ease at which you could create colourful block shapes and patterns, as well its ability to mass produce designs. Screen printing has a long and diverse history, but not one that is going to end anytime soon. The method is still wildly popular today amongst printmakers, with its charming characteristic and accessibility maintaining its popularity as strong as ever.
Ben Rider
Ben Rider is an illustrator and prink maker based in London. Rider is known for his messy neon prints with punk undertones. His work is created using a screen print to bring his illustrations alive, usually in a psychedelic pop art style. One of my favourite pieces of his would be ‘Pleasure Thyself.
5Print Club London. (n.d.). Pleasure Thyself by Ben Rider. [online] Available at: https://printclublondon.com/shop/pleasure-thyself/ [Accessed 13 Mar. 2021].
This print includes a hand holding to smiley faces, as well as the name of the piece, ‘Pleasure Thyself’. This print is fairly simple; however, I feel as though there's a lot of depth to it. At first glance, it simply seems to be a print about looking after yourself and your mental health. The description of the piece states, ‘In these strange days it's good to be reminded to just be kind to ourselves too!’. I feel as though there could also be a comparison drawn between this piece and drug culture. The hand seems to be holding two smiley faces, which at first reminded me of pills. The slogan of, ‘Pleasure Thyself’ could also relate to the act of getting high or taking an upper. I feel as though the colour pallet helps strengthen this analysis. The piece includes bright pink and yellow, creating a psychedelic feeling. There are also a bunch of lines coming out of the faces, making them the main focus point of the piece. I feel that this also adds emphasis to the pill like shapes. However, some may say that these lines were included to replicate a sun. It could also be argued that this print was inspired by addiction. Many people fall into a dark hole and use drugs as a form of escapism, using the euphoric feeling of being under the influence as a stimulant during hard times. Over all, I feel that this piece was created with this double entendre in mind. It could simply be enjoyed as a print about looking after yourself and staying positive, but on the other hand, could also be viewed as a piece inspired by drug culture. With many of Rider’s pieces having a sense of social commentary to them, I don’t doubt that this was his intentions.

‘Krunk Melts’ is a screen print, made using 3 layers, by Steven Wilson. It includes a bear, with a rather unpleased look on its face, melting away. I really liked this print because of the bright colours and unusual subject matter. Many of Steven Wilson’s work has a huge pop art style to it, and you can definitely see the correlation in this piece. The print uses a lot of bright colours, creating a cartoon style. The bear is outlined with a dark blue rather than a black, softening the piece all together. I feel that this makes the print feel a lot more comforting, compared to creating a stark contrast between the bright colours and a solid black outline. However, this carefree style is contradicted with the expression on the bear’s face. It has a very disapproving look on its face, as opposed to the stereotypical cheery smile cartoons are often given. This changed the feeling of the piece completely. The look on the bear’s face, along with the fact that it is melting, created a more sombre feeling to the print. This is strengthened with the fact that the bear itself is blue, a colour often used to convey sadness. I really liked the contrast this created. The use of bright colours in a piece that feels rather negative confuses the viewer. The art that, at first, seemed so cherry and carefree now has a sense of melancholy that was not initially obvious. I feel that this depth, mixed with the simplicity of the design, created a really interesting and effective print. After closely inspecting the piece, you are almost left not knowing how to feel about it, highlighting how powerful an image it is.
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was an American artist who explored a huge selection of media such as: painting, printing and sculpture as well as photography and film. Warhol was best known for his screen prints that explored the relationship between advertisement and celebrity culture. His art boosted him to fame during the 60’s, leading to him being considered a leading artist of the pop art movement with pieces such as, ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ and ‘Shot Mrilyns’. 8

Giant Panda 295 is a screen print done by Andy Warhol in 1983. The piece was done as a commission by Ron and Freyda Feldman, and was one of ten pieces created inspired by endangered animals. The print included a red panda with a thin blue outline and pink and yellow details. I really liked this piece as I felt it was instantly obvious why it was created. The red and yellow together somewhat mimics a fire, creating a sense of danger and anxiety. The use of a blue outline really helps the piece stand out more, especially against the red. This choice was especially effective in the eyes of the panda. There isn't really much detail, however I feel that this colour choice makes them look a lot more unnatural. The blue against the red really helps the eyes stand out. I feel that this was done to make the view feel like the panda is looking right at them, almost as if the panda is shaming you for not helping. This small detail, along with the intense colour pallet creates a sense of urgency, almost pushing you to help the cause. I think that this was a highly successful piece, managing to capture so much emotion in such a simple print. Even without looking into the background of the piece, you can hazard a good guess as to why it was created. Proving just how powerful a print this is, highlighting Warhol’s talent as a whole.
Screen printing inspires me for many reasons, and I feel that the more artists I research that explore the medium, the more passionate I feel about it. I really love that every artist that uses screen printing does it in their own way, with every artist’s work looking wildly different from each other's. Yet, the use of bright colours and layers ties them all together. I think throughout my journey as a printmaker, I want to experiment with screen printing more, taking into consideration how I can use both colour and layering to enhance my work.

Art Analysis Essay
Identifying which printmaking process works for me is pretty hard due to not having much experience in each different process, so I’d have to base this essay and my decision on which technique I’ve enjoyed the most this past year. I evaluated each process and my outcomes, and I feel the best would be Screen-printing. I also, came to this decision due to the speed and efficiency of this process. My art style can be quite graphical, and I feel this process captures that in print form the most, by using digital applications like Adobe Draw initially then exposing them onto a screen to produce a print. Using the specific colours in the initial design or being able to experiment freely without changing the integrity of the initial outcome.
After conducting initial research, I discovered that screen-printing started as early as the 17th Century progressing through the decades ever evolving as the technique, we know it as today. Artists like Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein really giving it the platform of popularity. The process makes up of a exposing a stencil onto a silk screen, then pushing the ink or paint through the screen so it transfers onto the material you’re wanting to print on. The stencil is exposed onto the screen in a similar way to a photograph, using light to burn the image into the reactive emulsion paint which hardens it. Any areas that weren’t covered by the design stencil remain a liquid which can be washed off to reveal the image you’re wanting to print, then allowing the ink to flow the screen to your desired layout or design.
Kate Gibb
Kate Gibbs is artist I’ve researched as part of another project and is printmaking artist from London, England. I loved her work previously, as I find it to be very expressive with her use of colour, lines, shapes and texture. The obvious use of mark making within her work can be visualised in different works. Utilising the chance of happy accidents that can occur during the creative process.
kategibb.co.uk. (n.d.). Kate Gibb. [online] Available at: http://kategibb.co.uk [Accessed 1 Mar. 2021].
My analysis of Kate Gibbs ‘Pleasure Garden’ starts with my initial feelings on the overall, composition, colours, textures and shapes she has used to create this piece. When looking at this design I get cultural references of Japanese printworks though her use on colour and their tonal ranges, after conducting further research I noticed that this design in particular references Kyoto, Japan for a magazine publication. This explains why she worked in this way to portray a more abstract outcome in relation to her way of working. As similar to her other prints works, I’ve researched Kate Gibb prefers the use simple shapes, colours and lines combined with layering. These marks on top of one another make her prints more cohesive to me, I think she does this, so her style is fluent and easily recognizable predominately, in her album cover works. My eyes are more drawn to the circle which looks like sun on the bottom layer, then flow around the composition following the brush strokes down the page into a pool of different mark marking processes. I find this design very relaxing compared to her other designs, the colours are more complementary of each other already mentioning their tones but, also different shades blue ranging to green and aqua. I think she might have done this to relate back to Japanese culture, as I also find the ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Japanese artist Hokusai, very harmonious and calming. I like her use on paintbrush strokes to add texture especially in the larger areas where you can see the background peaking through. The little areas of detail filling negative spaces with repeated patterns and the shadowing of the background adds dimension also, contributing to the flow of direction when looking at the design. I like that there are some elements more subtle than others I think she would have done this to keep eyes on the piece for longer a the more I look and analyse different shapes and lines appear.

Laurie Hastings
Laurie Hastings is a printmaking artist I’ve discovered recently on Instagram; her simple illustrative style of screen printing really caught my eye. Her background as an illustrator shows through into her silk-screen works, with the cartoon influenced figures and use of block colours. She is a commission-based artist with displaying works on her online portfolio but, also international exhibits.
Laurie Hastings. (n.d.). Portfolio | LAURIE HASTINGS Illustrator and Printmaker. [online] Available at: https://www.lauriehastings.com/ [Accessed 1 Mar. 2021].
My analysis of Laurie Hastings ‘The Adventurers - Campfire’ starts with my initial feelings on the overall, composition, block colours and line work she has used to create this piece. My initial reaction was to the process of how this piece was made, as at an initial glance I thought it was a Lino Print, very similar to another artist I’ve researched called Michelle Hughes in terms of line work and block colours. I feel the simplification of only two blocked colours, one darker, one lighter which have no tonal range, shadows or highlights to them, then to be applied in layers create this effect. I get a real homely, warming feel from this, warmth relating the fire and her use of organic lines and shapes in waves. I can feel movement within the design to how it has been illustrated this way with fewer straight lines and the trees being more suggestive than realistic shapes. The figure in the print is of a woman looking out at the sky looking comfortable in her overall position. My own relation to camping and a sitting in front of a fire is that I’ve always found it very peaceful which also, strengthens the warmth intuition as I have a personal relation to it. The ground has also, been flipped in colour to create extra dimension of shape, grounding and stability. Highlighting this area to be different to the sky and other elements of the print. After looking deeper, I discovered this piece being part of a series of 3, with the other designs having similarities within their illustrative forms. Making all 3 designs a cohesive collection together. Looking at the bottom of the print your eyes automatically are drawn upwards due to all the different marks/lines facing vertically then interconnecting with different elements then drawing focus back looking at the print and its entirety.

Chuck Sperry
Chuck Sperry is another screen-printing artist I’ve come across recently. He’s an American printmaker based in San Francisco also, working from his studio there. He exhibits his work internationally propelling his American rock poster style into fine arts using a silk-screen process. His use of text, patterns and various materials to print on caught my eye as I’d not seen this before.
Chuck Sperry. (n.d.). Original Art Archives. [online] Available at: https://chucksperry.net/category/original-art/.
My analysis of Chuck Sperry ‘Vivien 2016’ starts with my initial feelings on the overall, composition, colours, patterns and influences that have gone into creating this print. My eyes are drawn to the initial profile of a woman as the title suggests is Vivien. Vivien reminds my highly of Marvels villain Mystique in the X-men series due to her being topless, the colours used for her hair and body along with the watermarked style texture of the background pattern showing through. I also researched his influences and among them was the era of pop art which I can see this print is heavily inspired by. Roy Lichtenstein portrayed women in many of his designs and the facial features and hair of ‘Vivien’ here compared to his ‘M-Mm Maybe’ print look very similar to me regarding there cartoon comic style. Although I do see the differences, I see I that Roy used dots to add definition in specific areas strengthening comic references whereas Chuck Sperry uses florals it his work. The floral head piece which looks as if it’s glowing from radial illusion created is the most eye-catching part of this design dividing the figure away from the busy background. Highlighting aspects of the background, the style of how the leaves have been drawn remind me of Celtic symbolism, and a traditional illustration of a Scottish thistle, the repeated pattern and the colours used a similar to a tapestry. Chuck Sperry has created a series of these designs uses the description of ‘muses’ and female names to title them, each design has similarities to the hair, florals and beauty creating a series print. Although his more recent work in this style looks less like a comic and more like a realistic portrait of a woman. The title of Muse to me highlights the feeling of confidence, strength and beauty which I feel is portrayed along with sensuality.
Wikimedia.org. (2021). [online] Available at: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/M-Maybe.jpg.
All of the prints I’ve chosen have some form of an organic natural feel I find I am most inspired by these elements in terms relating to my own work. Different aspects of each artist drew me in for the analysis of their work. I find Kate Gibbs expressive abstract style very freeing with the use of her bold colours and layering. Whereas both Laurie Hastings and Chuck Sperry although using the same printmaking process have more of a graphical, planned technical feel. While writing up my analysis I wanted to include both styles of working as depending on my mood I like to work either way.

Final Outcome -How do external factors affect our listening patterns?
Im very happy with how this project worked out, I believe visually the use of colour is effective at achieving my goal of displaying my found data.
I set out to explore the impact of external factors on my listening patterns so the extent of data I was able to access was vital to being able to create this graph so it was definitely worth while taking the extra time to categorise my listening history into clear and concise forms.
I also felt it was important to ensure this project was personal, everyone has had an interesting and difficult summer and I felt this was a great factor to focus on. I found music to be a consistent mood changer, especially when the negative effects of lockdown were present.
Being critical, the information featured within the black circles need to be much more legible. And I feel the visual elements could be a bit overwhelming with the colours shapes and angle of type. In my tutorial it was mentioned how sometimes you need to take away some layers to present data in the best, most effective way.
Looking back, one of the most important things I had to complete was analysis of the talk. Reading the text and looking at the video of the talk were very important and helped me massively when it came to translating the messages and themes from the talk to my spreads. I would say the vast majority of my design decisions were influenced from key themes and narratives from the text.
Another area I planned to explore was the use of expression and body language. I thought that this would be excellent to focus on. When analysing the video I noticed how much the speaker’s passion and excitement for the subject is shown through her movement and body language. I instantly had many ideas as to how I could show this through different typographic and layout styles and looked forward to start experimenting. I found that research into publications such as Lindsay magazine helped to explore different ways in which I could treat text to highlight certain themes and issues.
Once I felt like I understood the themes well enough I started to focus on ways in which I could create images to support and reinforce the messages of the talk. I first started using the same images that were shown in the talk, I would then manipulate these in a way that somewhat resembles the message of that section of the talk. Although I found the images to look visually exciting, I really wasn’t satisfied with the images I was creating. I thought that just taking images I didn’t create and modifying them in a way that could be paired to themes of the talk was not enough. I knew I was slightly scared to start creating my own imagery and just putting it off by manipulating other images and I knew that I could do something better and more original.
I went back to the talk and attempted to find a way to support the talks message whilst still maintaining visually stimulating content. Illustration is an image making technique that really interests me, especially satirical style cartoons such as the ones found in political newspapers. I was slightly wary of choosing a method of image making I have no real experience in for my spreads but decided it was a good decision and a great opportunity to learn a new skill.
I found that deciding to use illustration for my image making was a great idea. It allowed me to be in full control of the relationship between the text and imagery as I planned for the images to be there to reinforce the message of the text in a way that excites the reader.

so we were asked 3 questions:
1. is illustration? A form of art communicating a message or showing a visual idea , recording a plant/ form of life in the wild recording an event unfolding before you (I remember seeing a painting on my trip to Russia of a massacre bloody Sunday) in fact in one could say Communist Russia and Germany when run by Adolf Hitler used art and radio to push their ideology and communicate a positive facade of their horrid plans for their respective countries.Especially illustration in newspapers which at the time people were an important part in human life especially in Europe.Your everyday reliant on newspapers to tell them the truth new shops to check out new restaurants to visit new products and services to buy,2. what is its purpose?- One's expression to bring joy or to just feel and create sometimes there is no reason you just felt like making something - to model or demonstrate a service ( a digital animated character walking) a potential product (iPhone 11pro), building, space, enviroment, scene, character etc.- to communicate ideas, views, opinions, thoughts, irony e.g political cartoons in british newspapers or films - to entertain / divert the masses - film/comic strips in newspapers or online, books, animation, games etc.- to make people think - painting or film or anything Banksy does his instagram is awesome 3. what can illustration do?anything literally it can impact all industries: helping pharmaceuticals and chemists on how to perform an experiment or how the lab should look the possibilities are endless- restaurant menus- visual ideas - storyboards for tv and films et design etc.- product design cars electric devices- where the fire exit signs- online training videos for companies animation for scenarios how to videos - a brand logo apple,The Walt Disney Company, the vue cinema logo etc. From wikipedia - ' Contemporary illustration uses a wide range of styles and techniques, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, montage, digital design, multimedia, 3D modelling. Depending on the purpose, illustration may be expressive, stylised, realistic or highly technical.Specialist areas include: Architectural illustration Archaeological illustration Botanical illustration Concept art Fashion illustration Information graphics Technical illustration Medical illustration Narrative illustration Picture books Scientific illustration' here are the groups i was in zoom group 5 answers :an interesting find i find whilst researching :/An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process,[1] designed for integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films. An illustration is typically created by an illustrator. Illustration also means providing an example; either in writing or in picture form. The origin of the word “illustration” is late Middle English (in the sense ‘illumination; spiritual or intellectual enlightenment’): via Old French from Latin illustratio (n-), from the verb illustrare' research sites:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illustration#:~:text=An%20illustration%20is%20a%20decoration,typically%20created%20by%20an%20illustrator. https://www.wordsense.eu/illustrare/ for me illustration is my expression whether via biro pen or watercolours etc. whatever medium this discipline can bring joy it can evoke an emotive memory it can inspire civilians to go to war and 'fight the huns' which many cartoons in newspapers did it during the first world war and second world wars.evoking a sense of comradery a call for heroes a call to 'do your bit' 'keep calm and carry on' and 'do your bit for the war effort'. illustration has the power to communicate an idea or various ideas therefore it has the ability to influence people and inspire and positive or negative reaction illustration and therefore art has power ...where do we get our info or inspo from?the internet - images, text, youtubecinema - filmstv- adverts games - ubisoft's assassin's creed 2,brotherhood what are you inspired by in accordance to the senses?Sensory integration is the process by which we receive information through our senses, organize this information, and use it to participate in everyday activities. An example of sensory integration is: Baby smelling food as they bring it to their mouth Tasting the food Feeling the texture Determining what this food is and if they want more https://pathways.org/topics-of-development/sensory/You read that right! Most people think there are just 5 sense, but there are actually 7! So what are the 7 senses? How might we use these senses in art Sight (Vision) - light the effect of light, everything we see nature social media, traditional media fine art in newspapers, film, photography, books, cartoon, animals, water, rocks, buildings and products, food, clothes, people etc.
Hearing (Auditory) - hearing a problem and trying to figure out how to fix it,hearing sound and figuring how to visualize it or incorporate it
Smell (Olfactory) - thinking of a memory how one felt at a specific time and trying to encapsulate that feeling that emotions and expressing that emotion or how one feels before during and after a smell e.g the air during a hot salty windy day at bournemouth beach
Taste (Gustatory) - memories, good food the feeling of gooey melting chocolate in my mouth trés delicieux!
Demonstrate that in a physical tangible state and or image whether it be traditional analogue on paper perhaps a 3D digital
Touch (Tactile) - textures and grains and movements of a rock of thing feathers and feeling and recreating that or recording it perhaps Vestibular (Movement) - the movement and balance sense, which gives us information about where our head and body are in space. Helps us stay upright when we sit, stand, and walk. - Dance the feeling of a wave hitting the rocks or water against you
Proprioception (Body Position): the body awareness sense, which tells us where our body parts are relative to each other. It also gives us information about how much force to use, allowing us to do something like crack an egg while not crushing the egg in our hands. - inspire to create an animation or a short film of various movements and how the character walks runs etc. various body movement prior to filming character development *FILM/TV/THEATRE mechanical horse like in war horse etc.
* Emotion and feeling - making people feel a different emotion or various emotions feeling empathy or anger making people feel inspired to better society

Our World:- Education for everyone - ignorance is not bliss but a trap to be manipulated and controlled.Critical thinking discussions and emotional and mental growth is a positive thing is is an asset to society.Every human being able to have a full education for them and their needs if they are great at art and history they should not be shamed for not doing good in science! The current Prussian educational system is not helping everyone excel in the subjects they are good at - it was meant for military education in the ancient world after all however we need an improvement.Especially on the teachers hired and trained. Some countries are allegedly failing students just so that they can work in a specific manual labour industries when the kids are intelligent enough to be doctors and scientists they are purposefully failed and told to smash rocks or other manual labour jobs.
I care about the safety and innocence of the next generation globally for kids to be safe from men and woman who want to use them for their own benefit e.g greedy parents, predators, human traffickers and cult leaders
The ending of homeless (people being able to work and have their own home in the UK especially in London)
The end of human trafficking one human forcing another human being to do something for free and forcibly take away their own freedom their God given free will that is not okay to me that will never be okay we are all priceless.

Sturken, M. Cartwright, L. (2004) Practices of Looking
The Panopticon
Designed by British Jurist and social reformer Jeremy Bentham in 1791, as an architectural system of control and surveillance.

Dominant culture: a dominant culture is one that is able, through economic or political power, to impose its values, language, and ways of behaving on a subordinate culture or cultures. This may be achieved through legal or political suppression of other sets of values and patterns of behaviour, or by monopolizing the media of communication.
Dominant culture. A Dictionary of Sociology. . Encyclopedia.com.
ubculture: Subcultures are smaller groups within the larger culture that have slightly different—or additional—traditions and ideas. They tend to share much in common with the larger culture and typically interact with members of the majority on a regular basis. Most people belong to at least one group that can be classified as a subculture.
Feminist Critique:
The role of women/girls is largely ignored.
The experience of youth is gendered.
Wider gender politics can be investigated through the study of youth subcultures.

Haul Girls
“In fact, the closest thing to the old model of a subculture I've come across is Helina and the haul girls. Their videos are about conspicuous consumption: a public display of their good taste, carefully assembled with precise attention to detail. When you put it like that – and at the risk of incurring a fatwah from middle-aged Paul Weller fans – they sound remarkably like mods.”
-Alexis Petridis
Conspicuous Consumption:
..is a term introduced by the Norwegian-American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class" (1899). The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display wealth and income rather than to cover the real needs of the consumer.

- First person to write about Utopia - a perfect imaginary world
- Greek - Ou-topos - No place, or Nowhere
- Eu-topos- A good place
Can a perfect place ever be realised?
Utopia means nowhere or no place. It has often been taken to mean good place, through confusion of its first syllable with the Greek eu as in euphemism or eulogy. As a result of this mix up, another word, dystopia, has been invented, to mean bad place. But, strictly speaking, imaginary good places and imaginary bad places are all utopias, or nowheres.

NOSTALGIA AS DOMINANT MODE
How do explain the large number of works based on pre-existing work?
Why do you think that adaptations are the dominant product in today’s media market?
Two Types of Nostalgia
estorative:
“puts emphasis on nostos (returning home) and proposes to rebuild the lost home and patch up the memory gaps.” (Boym)
Reflective:
“Reflective nostalgia, on the other hand, “dwells in algia (aching), in longing and loss, the imperfect process of remembrance.”
“Personal nostalgia can be used therapeutically to help individuals move beyond trauma” (Batcho, 2017)
Historically being nostalgic or using nostalgia as a form of expression in art or literature has not been seen as a good thing, rather it’s been viewed as the antithesis of progression and innovation. Miuccia Prada once said ‘nostalgia is a very complicated subject for me. I'm attracted by nostalgia but I refuse it intellectually.’
Definition of Hauntology
Hauntology is a philosophical concept referring to the return or persistence of elements from the past, as in the manner of a ghost. The term was coined by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in his 1993 book Spectres of Marx.
Broadly speaking, the notion that the present is haunted by lost futures
