It happens often, a highly desensitized state of being awake while the body tries to catch up. The sensation was odd, there were several thousands things you became aware of… what your body should unconsciously do, but does not fully do so. The absence of fear makes the experience surreal, but as the seconds trickle, the terror sets in… the subtle sounds of bodily fluids, the screeches of tendons, and the delayed breathing. The last one is the most terrifying of all… then the system begins. At that point, the infected become aware of how they are more man-made machines than human, and the sounds make more sense.

Pain begins to register, but not quite like it did before. It resembles faint vibration pooling at the crook of his elbow. He had done more missions than he could count that he knew what it felt like to be stabbed with something. More habit than an actual response, his nose scrunches, brows knitting as a low groan shakes at this throat.

“Administering KEGG Compound D00088 to Patient 114425.”

The reader strapped around his wrist beeped furiously. His eyes shot open, chest heaving, shoulders rising and falling quickly… Drying mouth hanging ajar, he catches his reflection at the mirror not far from the foot of his infirmary bed. His blood red eyes shot back at him, pale white skin drenched in sweat, and the aged machines keeping him and the rest of the outpost-borns alive beeped their steady rhythms. This is what it takes to live in this world now.

“Waking up is such bitch now, isn’t it?” Hearing the general’s words made him straighten up, but the elderly man shakes his head and motions for him to stay in bed. “Quit acting like you’re a stranger, son. I practically raised you.”

He knew why the man was here. He doesn’t technically feel many things anymore, but people would call it a feeling. The other council members already began trying to dissuade him from joining the caravan into the walled Capital. Surely, he was going to do the same.

Their arrivals and talks didn’t deter his usual routine though. He went on to check his vitals, face void of expression or care, just the typical kind of aloofness. It was not intentional, and the ones who treated him like family and genuinely cared knew it was his program. Surviving many missions comes at a cost, the second to the last one leaving him critical to the point of having to sacrifice the last bit of his humanity… or at least how to express it.

His head starts to spin as soon as he gets on his feet, a hand quickly gripping onto the metal stand of his rounds of IV. He closed his eyes and tried to remember what a pulsing headache would feel like, and what the sting of a cold surface against his hand was like. He didn’t have to look to see the worried expression on the old man’s face, “You know I have to go… I know the city more than anyone in the squad.” It was hard to speak with restraint, with care and not like he was giving orders.

This was why he dreaded wake up calls, restarting wake-body functions and getting back to optimal levels is a literal chore. His chest still feels heavy, and every ounce of air he tried to breathe still feels thick, like he was breathing underwater. “It’s taking you longer. We’re not properly supplied to reconfigure you, K. If your conduction velocity falls below even the threshold, we can’t bring you back. You know that… and yet you—”

“I am not out to get myself decommissioned if that’s where you’re getting at” He quickly replied, with as much disgust and annoyance spread across his face to what he was being accused of.

“Out to get yourself killed, K. Killed.” The General spat just as swiftly. “In case you’ve forgotten, you’re not an equipment, or a weapon. When we can’t bring you back, it’s death. Not just a simple decommissioning. Do you get that?” The gentleness seeps in as he finishes his sentence, unfortunate for him, the young man does not seem to be equipped with the empathy required to understand the situation.

“We need those compounds, sir. Every day that passes that the younger outpost-borns are exposed to the untreated refugees risks them to higher mortality rates.” K replies, calmer this time but still lacking the gentleness of those with in-tact biochemical functions. “You said it yourself, we’re not properly supplied anymore. The compounds are our last hope until we find a doctor who would leave the wall for us.” He almost stumbles forward, only to be caught and held up by the elderly man before his gaze falls on the stacks of boxes of NF-κB vials at his feet.

There was a part of him, so small that it was easy to dismiss, that felt regret. It was easy to reconstruct. The falling sensation just below his stomach, the tightening at his neck. “Don’t think so simple of them, K. They know… they understand what needs to be put on the line to keep the outpost afloat, concealed. Functioning for people like us… you.” The General gives his shoulder a light squeeze, “The refugees left those for you and your squad. It’s enough to last them a few days this winter. They want you to come back. So don’t think about being a hero, we already have enough of those. What we need at this age… are sons, daughters. So your first mission, when you get inside…is to come home.”

There was supposed to be a sensation there, a feeling anchored to the way his body was feeling. It was faint, almost not there… but if he focused hard enough, it glowed, like a warm light breathing underneath the layers of synthetic flesh and blood. And even as the General flashed him a final smile before exiting the room, K was still unable to give a more fitting response, expression or response to how those words and this acts taking form in temperature-regulating vials made him feel.

“Elevation in tryptophan hydroxylaseto detected. Confirming antibiotic administration via IV.”

He thinks hard as he receives the alert, and for a few seconds there, he considers getting the dose. His reader beeps the final alert before it administers what his body apparently needs as he and his programmer agreed as his threshold. “Override, abort antibiotic administration. Proceed with serotonin synthesis. Delete override instruction from database.”

“Override confirmed. Deleting override line from database.”

The young man feels it in his chest, behind his ears, and lodge somewhere beneath his ribs. The clenching, the squeezing, and the tightening… one that would have made him fall to the ground, clutching hard to whatever his hands could hold onto. Instead it all but comes in exactly how they are defined, without the ropes and knots of frail and intangible emotions. It seemed futile to have to go through them, for his sewn, stapled, and reprogrammed body to process it as such but never fully so. His body could proceed with its program, and he need not have to deal with even the slightest sensation. But it felt wrong not to.

K knew that it was like running away from the truth and bringing himself farther away from being human if he chose to execute the standard protocol. He never imagined himself to live such a philosophical life because it had no room in this lifetime… but here he is.

People often say that life passes in the blink of an eye, the infected deal with a far more severe case of it. Seconds last a lifetime some days, and on others, a lifetime can just be a second. And K, as always, only has his eyes forward, half confident that the others got his back… and half hopeful that they really do.

The farther they walked towards a tunnel’s exit, the thicker and drier the air became. That meant having to pay more attention to the screens on their bands, without the alerts, dropping dead all of a sudden was very likely. “The air is denser here, make sure to check your numbers. Do manual instructions and override auto-functions if your implants have been upgraded recently. The results last longer if you delay the EPO release.” K says into the receiver before looking at the ones behind him, everyone nodding their heads and doing as instructed.

K does not realize his head had been throbbing and his breathing getting heavier until the relief comes. Each breath was easier than the one before it that his free hand balls into a fist then releases, while the other tightens around his gun, twisting at its handle.

“You should have gotten the upgrades when it became available.” He looks over his shoulder and sees Carmin, with his white hair botch-dyed brown and mismatched contacts of green and blue to match his cat’s. He had no idea how Carmin survived all the missions they did together, he wasn’t the smartest or the fastest… but he was lucky as hell. K supposed that was a talent someone can be born with too. It was the only way the phenomenon that is Carmin can be explained. “You got first dibs and you keep that modulated NPV of yours? How are you supposed to outrun the healthies?” Carmin chuckles, chewing on a licorice wand. “Can you even remember what it felt like having normal lungs? K, in fact, did not remember ever being healthy. His memories were filled with hospital visits, vaccines, and blood transfusions. Before he could respond, however, Carmin already took the liberty to copy him. “I’m an outpost baby, Carmin.” The other says, copying him somewhat mockingly but also accurately that it made the others snicker and chuckle.

“It’s kind of cool, being a Franken-baby and all, trust me, there wasn’t a lot you missed out. Being healthy sucked, they keep taking stem cells and force you to donate blood cells and antibodies for vaccines.” There were hums and quiet but ardent yeses from their group, if K and the other outpost-borns didn’t know better, those who were born elsewhere were trying to comfort them. “You’re more human than healthies, believe me.” Carmin smiles, with a light squeeze on his shoulder before walking ahead.

When they reached their first marker, the members synced their readers to calibrate timers, and uploaded biochemical status to linked databases. “I reset our thresholds to 35%, if you have not collected your assigned supply and your numbers are depleted, this is my verbal permission to retreat to marker zero. No one is allowed to die here. Go home, that’s the order. Understand?” It was not much of a pep talk, but it was enough to reassure whoever was with him. K was not good at those sorts of things, but he is good at making sure the mission is carried out properly. And the others trusted him enough to believe him and follow his orders, even if the delivery could be kinder.

Specific instructions and tasks were distributed to each pair and group before they went their separate ways. K, accompanied by another seasoned soldier, will be going out into the open. It was the part his guardians hated and feared the most. However, it was essential to this mission… and there were only a few outpost-born capable of withstanding the side effects of biosynthetic enhancements like the ones required to blend in with the citizens inside the dome. “Override tyrosinase regulation. Commence synthetic eumelanin production. Prioritize monitoring of tyrosinase activity, calibrate to general biochemical threshold levels.”

Lore Worldbuilding Prompts!

Inspired by my recent deep dive into lore worldbuilding, here are some prompts that might help you flesh out your clan a bit :o

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Who built the clan’s main locations, and when? Out of what materials?

Does the clan have a unified building style or is it a hodgepodge of different ideas? If it’s unified, how and why--does your clan have an architect who carefully designs every addition? If it’s a hodgepodge, which dragons are typically responsible for building and what do their styles look like?

How does your clan connect to the rest of Sornieth? If by road, who built the roads--and who maintains them? How does the average passerby find and enter your clan?

What do the houses look like? Does every dragon have their own designed to their own tastes, or do they purchase them from someone else? Do multiple dragons live in the same house, or does each family have their own place? What sort of furniture and decoration is common, and what sort of dragons tend to live near one another?

ECONOMY:

What is considered money? Is “treasure” a minted coin or a hoard of valuable trinkets? How do dragons pay for their goods, and how much do these goods typically cost? Is barter allowed--or encouraged?

If your treasure is minted and in coin form, do more concise forms of it exist--i.e. gold bars, 10kt coins, ect.? If not, where do dragons store all those individual coins?

What about gems--do any gems count, or just certain ones? Is there a universal conversion rate, or do certain gems count for more than others? Does it vary by clan? If so, what gem does your clan consider the most valuable?

How does wealth cycle in your clan? Do dragons get money from selling goods or being employed to other dragons? What about the dragons who aren’t shopowners or employees--how do they get their treasure, or do they? If your clan has a government, does it tax its citizens--and what does it offer in return if it does?

How does trade with outside clans work? Is it a direct goods-for-goods transfer, or is monetary wealth like treasure the preferred means of exchange?

TRADE:

What does your clan export? What sort of goods does it as a whole produce? If it doesn’t produce goods as a whole, what do individuals produce and how are these integrated together for the good of the clan? Is there a tax required for an individual to export their own goods?

How do items get from clan to clan? Does your clan have trade barges to travel overseas and caravans to travel overland? Do they only have one or the other and take circuitous routes to deliver goods to all their allies?

How long does the average trade deal usually take? Do multiple trade routes exist to bring perishable vs. nonperishable items to the clan? What happens when trade gets delayed or destroyed--how does that upset the balance of the clan?

What does your clan need to import in order to survive and expand? If it exports mainly artisan goods, where does it get all of the base materials like wood, stone, and metal? If it exports mainly base materials, where does it get those, and who harvests it? If there’s a mix of both, what gaps are filled in via imports?

Does your clan obtain enough food for itself or does it need to trade with others? If it does produce food, who farms it, and how does your Flight affect what can and cannot be farmed? If trade is necessary, how does the clan get enough money to pay for the imported food? What happens when there is a deficit or a surplus?

If your clan doesn’t need to trade at all, how? Who produces what, and what is considered unimportant? How do they remain self-sufficient, and what do they do when their efforts aren’t enough?

The Lip - Review

Melody Janie lives in a caravan above Bones Break on the coast of Cornwall, doing her best to keep her family's Cafy clean and ready to reopen. As a Cornish person myself, I've always loved books that explore my county and The Lip has blown all other stories out of the water. It's a harrowing, heart-wrenching story with as many twists as a Greek Tragedy and somehow three times as engaging. I finished it in under a night, I couldn't put the book down. The pacing is phenomenal, Carroll reveals the plot in carefully measured steps that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and the characters are fantastically human and real.

Central is Melody Janie. At first I didn't like her, I found her abrasive, arrogant, a little self absorbed. To me, she represented the typical pro-Cornish local - I've met plenty of them in my time. Her vitriol against emmets, her desire to protect her land, her adoration for the Cornish countryside was all familiar and parts of her rubbed up against me like sandpaper, but I kept going. I kept going because I wanted to know more, and the more I read, the more sympathetic I became.

Melody Janie has her reasons to be bitter. She's little more than a child struggling to get by. Every day she faces new challenges. Each hill is harder to climb than the last. As you get to know her, you begin to understand why she's so angry and you begin to first sympathise and then empathise with her. Carroll does an excellent job at humanising Melody Janie and her troubles, making her a character you just long to save.

And then there's the mysterious stranger. Melody Janie doesn't like an emmet coming onto her land, and yet it's his presence that drives the story and forces Melody Janie to come to terms with her past and what will become of her future. Richard is an intriguing character, one who I always wanted to know more about. I had theories about him; none of them turned out to be true.

Finally, there's Esther. Esther was one of my favourite characters in the story, her steady kindness was one that immediately drew me in. She offered out the hand I wished I could, her friendship a key to resolving the plot. Carroll carefully weaved an intricate story of female friendship that so often falls flat in novels, one that consists of supporting and helping each other.

There's so much in The Lip to unpack. The detailed and graphic descriptions of the landscape really drag you into Melody Janie's world, you learn to love the Cornish Coast as much as Melody Janie does; you want to protect it from those who'd wish it harm. When reading Carroll's descriptions I could easily picture the cliffs and paths he was describing, they made me want to go out walking myself, just like Melody Janie. And the landscape isn't just a pretty description, it's almost a character itself its so alive and important - it's been a long time since I read a book where the landscape was quite so important to the story.

All in all, The Lip is a wonderful exploration of mental illness, grief, and rural poverty set on the North Cornwall coast. I love how the book explores the darker side of Cornwall that tourists rarely see, it's a struggle that's close to my heart. More and more, people are forced to rely on tourist trade, summer jobs, and holidaymakers in order to scrape by. The violence, and the struggle to afford skyrocketing costs of living in an overwhelmingly poor county are rarely touched on in novels about Cornwall where daily life is often romanticised by writers. Carroll does none of that, he doesn't shy away from tragedy and The Lip is all the better for it.

A fantastic read and I can't wait to see what comes next from Charlie Carroll.

Yup, I’m doing a Fallout crossover now. This is what ‘freddie the hopeless’ has turned into now too, this is what happens when you like two things too much.

It all started when I was out one day delivering a packet to the stripe, I’d never been there before so I took this sort of long way just so I could marvel at New Vegas from afar like so many others. Little did I know this would cost me my life.

Not long after I took a small yet quick break, I was smacked on the head from behind and taken somewhere I didn’t recognize. Maybe because I was too busy looking at my hands, which have been tied together now. I try and break free, but it doesn’t work.

???: Guess who’s waking up over here?

I hear a voice say in front of me, so I look up to see three men, two look almost the same and one has a checkered coat. Who gets this fancy for a kidnapping?

Man with checkered coat: Time to cash out…

The fancy one says as he puts out his cigar by crushing it under his foot.

???: Will you get it over with?

The guy on his right (my left) says impatiently and the fancy guy just raising a finger to shut him up.

Man with checkered coat: Maybe Kahns kill people without looking them in the face. But I ain't-a fink.

He puts his arm down.

Man with checkered coat: Dig?

He then reached into his coat and pulls out a poker chip, the very thing I was delivering.

Man with checkered coat: You made your last delivery, kid. Sorry, you got twisted up in this scene.

I’m almost tempted to jump up and get back that chip when he puts it away and pulls a very fancy looking pistol out instead.

Man with checkered coat: From where you're kneeling must seem like an 18 carat run of bad luck. Truth is.

He points the gun at me.

Man with checkered coat: The game was rigged from the start.

*BANG*

My vision slowly comes back as I look at a ceiling fan. What happened last night? I can’t seem to remember a thing from before now that I’ve woken up. Oh no.

???: You’re awake. How about that.

I sit up while holding my head, this makes the doctor sit forward and hold on steady.

???: Woah easy there. Easy. You been out cold a couple of days now. Why don’t you relax a second? Get your bearings.

Did this doctor save me? How did he manage to save my life after I was shot in the head? That’s impossible. He then helps me stand up.

???: Okay. No sense keeping you in bed anymore. Let’s see if we can get you on your feet.

Freddie: Thanks, doc..?

Doc Mitchell: Doc Mitchell at your service. Seems you took quite the nasty blow last night, so says the robot that dug you out the ground. It took me a while but I managed to pull out two bullets and a lot of shrapnel out your head there.

Freddie: Did you say two bullets?

Doc Mitchell: It was surprising to me too, especially when I saw that you would make a full recovery. You must be real special.

As if one wasn’t enough for that asshole who kidnapped me he just had to shoot me twice. Looks like it still wasn’t enough. I simply laugh with the doctor.

Freddie: Guess so.

Doc Mitchell: Well, why don’t we start from the top? Follow me, I’d like to ask you a couple of questions. See if your dogs are still barking.

We head into another room and I take a seat on a couch while he takes a seat in another chair just in front of me.

Doc Mitchell: All right, I’m gonna say a word and I want you to say the first thing that comes to mind.

Let’s hope I can still think straight or think at all.

After answering many but quick questions, Doc Mitchell gets me set and ready to get on my way to hunt down the man who shot me.

Doc Mitchell: Here. These are yours. Was all you had on you when you was brought in.

He hands me some items and a note.

Doc Mitchell: Hope you don’t mind that I read it, doesn’t say much but it does mention something about a “Platinum Chip.”

The chip!

Freddie: Well, thanks again, Doc, I owe you my life.

We bid each other goodbye and I step outside into the hot weather. The first thing I do once I’m outside is read the note.

INSTRUCTIONS

Deliver the package at the north entrance to the Vegas Strip, by way of Freeside. An agent of the recipient will meet you at the checkpoint, take possession of the package, and pay for the delivery. Bring the payment to Johnson Nash at the Mojave Express agency in Primm.

Bonus on completion: 250 caps.

MANIFEST

This package contains:

You are an authorized agent of the Mojave Express Package until delivery is complete and payment has been processed, contractually obligated to complete this transaction and materially responsible for any malfeasance or loss. Freddie: Who the hell wanted that thing in the first place? What’s so special about a platinum poker chip? My gut tells me I won’t find out. Oh well.

I put the note away and see a robot rolling around on one wheel, is that the robot Doc Mitchell mentioned digging me out of the ground? Better go and talk to it.

Freddie: Excuse me.

Making my way down the hill towards the robot, he turns to face me, now I was expecting to see a robot without a face. It has one for sure, there’s a cowboy on the screen on the front of its body.

???: Howdy partner! Might I say, you’re looking as fit as a fiddle.

Freddie: Hello. Uh, thanks for digging me out of the ground.

I chuckle nervously.

???: Don’t mention it! I’m always ready to lend a helping hand to a stranger in need.

Freddie: So, what’s your name? I’m Freddie.

Victor: The name’s Victor.

Freddie: I’ve never seen a robot like you before.

Victor: I’m a securitron, RobCo security model 2060-B. If you ever see any of my brothers, tell them Victor says howdy.

RobCo huh. Mmm alright then, seems like something they’d build.

Freddie: Do you know anything about the people that attacked me?

Victor: Can’t say I’m familiar with the rascals. Some of the fine folk in town might be able to help you out with that.

Well, that was useless. I was actually excited about this robot and maybe thought he could help me.

Freddie: Alright Victor, I'll see you some other time.

Victor: Happy trails!

He waves at me and continues to roll around, guess I better start asking around town. Looking around I decided that I’ll stop by the general store first. Please have some good news.

Freddie: Hello?

I say cautiously as I step inside, a man with a beard looks up from the counter with a smile.

Chet: You must be the one Doc Mitchell was patching up. The way I heard it, I didn’t think you’d be walking out of that office. The name’s Chet by the way.

Freddie: It's a miracle alright, I didn’t think I’d be waking up either. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about the people who attacked me, would you?

Chet: The leader was a New Vegas-type, typically city boy. He had a bunch of Great Kahns with him, probably hired guns. The Great Kahns normally stay in their own territory way up northwest, on account of them being enemies with the NCR.

Freddie: What can you tell me about the Great Kahns?

Chet: They’re tough sons of bitches, mean but not crazy - they’ll leave you alone unless you have something they want. They deal in illegal chems. There’s a good chance that most chems you come across are made by them.

Freddie: I doubt I’ll ever use chems but thanks for the info.

He laughs.

Chet: I don’t believe you can run packages across the Mojave just as you are.

I laugh.

Freddie: It’s a gift. Mind telling me how I can get to the strip?

Chet: There are two ways but people like us take the way through Freeside. The other way is used by the NCR in Camp McCarran, I doubt they’ll let anyone but NCR soldiers use it.

I remember the note saying something about Primm. Maybe I should head back to the express and talk about what happened to me and the package.

Freddie: I’ll keep that in mind, thank you.

Chet: You take care now.

Freddie: I’ll certainly will.

I bid the man goodbye and walk back outside the door. I equip my sturdy caravan shotgun and my broad machete.

Freddie: Better make my way to Primm then to Freeside so I can find the man who shot me and get some answers out of him.

Crossthicc AU - base roster!

The fleet was originally a meeting of several smaller groups that joined together for survival, hit it off well, and opted to remain together indefinitely. They met some other groups, and over time, added more and more, and have reproduced and brought in more people until they have hit their current size.

Note that with the use of longevity treatments, the crew is a lot older than they look; some of them, otherwise normal humans, may be hundreds of years old. The fleet itself may possibly be that old, too.

These original groups include:

A group of humans called the Neon Deathclaws, comprising a number of characters from Total Drama Island, reimagined as Vault Hunter-style mercenaries and treasure hunters from an obscure human world. Their leader, a team mom and fangirl called Sierra, is the wielder of the Gestat and the champion of the fleet as a whole. Her fellow mercs include: Lindsay (mega-busty friendly ditz who’s smarter than she lets on), Leshawna (Mom-Friend and emotional tank), Jasmine (wasteland survivalist who likes extreme conditions far too much), Courtney (founder of fleet logistics on the grounds that SOMEONE has to), Gwen (in a relationship with Courtney and doing really badly at not being amazed at their strange adventures), Crimson (actually IS good at not being perturbed by weirdness) and many others who are in less adventurous positions. Since TDI has so many characters, a lot of their positions are unclear; go ahead and ask me if you want clarification on where someone may or may not be.

Sierra herself is, in a sense, the ‘star’ of the fic, or at least a central fixture. She is responsible for how the fleet can exist in the first place, and her mysterious magical artifact and newfound powers allow them to do things like periodic FTL travel and create the superpowers that let them reshape themselves as they please. She is the ultimate mom-friend and overly excited to mass produce tons of babies with every conceivable form of sapient life; if a named character exists and has any interest in potentially having children, assume Sierra has a crush on them and, with her complete lack of restraint, already had a dozen children with them. She does not know what a chill is.

The Expedition Hive Explorers, incorporating several of the trolls from Homestuck. As trolls are considered caretakers of humans here, they hit it off well with the Neon Deathclaws, becoming fast friends. Led by Terezi Pyrope, who uses her mental powers and prophetic abilities to help guide them through the planes of magic when doing FTL jumps, and she has also managed to incorporate the powers of all other troll castes into her; rust telekinesis, bronze animal communion, yellow psionics, whatever it is limes do, jade vampire-ness, cerulean mind control, purple mind alteration and influences, and the sea dweller ability to breath underwater, with a combined physical power of all castes. She hopes to one day work out how to do this for all other trolls and make them all as powerful as her.

There is some evidence that Terezi and several of her friends (as well as Vriska Serket, a rival of hers that leads a pirate fleet) are incarnations of ancient gods embodying concepts essential to the universe, such as Time, Space, and so forth, with Terezi embodying Mind. By adventuring, they may find a way to fully reclaim their lost power and ascend to true godhood, and work out how this happened to them in the first place.

Other trolls in the group include: Karkat Vantas (Terezi’s sidekick, boytoy and dance battler), Equius Zahhak (engineer and professional Sensible Guy), Feferi Peixes (biotech enthusiast, spooky medic and founder of the fleet’s medical specialists), Nepeta Leijon (monster hunter and cute patoot), Konyyl Okimaw, Bronya Ursama, Chahut Maenad, and many other trolls, at least a hundred. Several ancient trolls originally hailing from the troll’s lost homeworld, Beforus, have since joined up, most notably the Disciple, Dolorosa and the Handmaid following adventures when they were met.

The Awakened Ancient Autobots. A group of Autobots who survived the destruction of their homeworld and the persecutions by the wicked Decepticon Empire, searching for the missing Optimus Prime and seeking to honor his dream of a just society where all are free to choose their own fate. Led mainly by Grimlock and Elita-1, in a ‘Grimlock is their champion, Elita-1 is their military icon’, but also including a number of other important figures. This includes several sub-teams, including the Dinobots (of them, Swoop, Sludge and Snarl are hyper thicc amazon fembots) are female here, the Technobots (children of the Dinobots, all fembots here), the Raptoricons (maybe?), the Torchbearers, and perhaps the Monsterbots, who are most likely fembots in their robot modes. Individual Transformers include Blackarachnia (the Beast Wars version, with emphasis on the science-y), Arcee (Prime continuity, with some IDW), Strongarm from RID2016, as well as a collection of minor characters retooled to fit this AU, as well as the Maximals from Beast Wars who appeared in the toyline but not the series proper, and generally fembots here as well.

With the use of special powers by studying ancient relics of religious significance to Cybertron, most of the fleet’s Autobots have been modified so they can adopt new alt forms on the fly, even maintaining a stock of up to seven different forms they can switch up freely, though it is physically stressful to do so. Not all of them choose to do so; for instance, Grimlock prefers his T-Rex mode and while he can transform into a monster truck, tank and bomber plane, he really hates that. Beastformers like him or the other Dinobots instead adopt additional beast forms or ‘inbetween’ humanoid beast forms. Sludge of the Dinobots, for instance, can transform into a ferocious Spinosaurus in addition to her native Apatosaurus mode, and goes by Scorn in this state.

The flipside of all that is that any given Transformer can turn into whatever vehicles are required by their friends.

The final group was originally a rock band led by the last free Diamond of the Gem homeworld; the Gems, a species of sapient stones that process magical energy and that can manifest this magic into female-presenting light bodies measuring more than dozens of feet tall, had a long-standing conflict with the Transformers of Cybertron, culminating in a massive war between the Decepticon Empire and Homeworld. When it ended, Homeworld had ceased to exist, all surviving Gems had scattered to the stars, and all the Diamonds were imprisoned as living ornaments upon the claws of the Decepticon’s Emperor of Destruction, Lord Megatron. All, that is, save the Diamond that had been made wrong: Pink Diamond.

She had already left her fellow matriarchs after growing weary of their suffocating control and, to her, appalling treatment of all life that was not themselves, becoming a wander among the stars along with those of her court that proved loyal to her, as well as defectors from other Diamond courts that believed in her vision. AFter the fall of Homeworld, they hid their nature as Gems, living many thousands of lives as aliens, and in one such life time, Pink Diamond, now calling herself Rose Quartz after the protectors of her court she so wanted to be rather than a living goddess, met a human musician named Greg Universe who inspired her to start up a musical band with her closest Gem friends, and she fell in love with him, eventually having a child with him and surviving the process by gestating a new Gem within herself, though at the cost of effectively maiming her own Gem. Thanks to the power of the Gestat, her Gem has been restored, and all Gems with her have been granted the ability to gestate Gems by simply devouring mineral deposits, and the Gem population has exploded with this gift.

Even small Gems stand nearly thirty feet tall, and Rose’s true size is unknown; it is speculated that as a Diamond, she may actually be many hundreds of feet tall, or even planet sized, but she typically suppresses her power. Gems can fuse into more powerful composite forms, growing ever larger, and Rose can fuse with her Crystal Gems to become the mighty Obsidian, who along with the combiner form of the Dinobots, Volcanicus, are the heaviest hitters of the fleet. They’re also friendly rivals to boot. Apart from those, Rose has her loyal Gems (Ruby and Sapphire, who are NOT perma-fused here most of the time, Pearl, Bismuth, Jasper, Amethyst, LApis Lazuli, and Peridot), as well as a wide number of other Gems that either came with her or have gathered to her cause over the years. Additionally, Rose’s human lover Greg is quasi-immortal thanks to her efforts, and her now grown up son Steven has brought the family of his wife Connie (a statuesque, hyper curvy warrior in the likes of Rose herself) into their band, include Connie’s mother Priyanka.

Together, these four groups and their representatives - Sierra, Terezi, Grimlock, and Rose Quartz - founded a small interstellar caravan of all their respective families and friends, traveling through space in hopes of finding a new homeland for them all. They’ve made many friends over the centuries since, with more people being added to the fleet or being absorbed into it, and most of the newcomers being born into the fleet thanks to the many perpetually gravid mother-champions.

Smash Bros characters will definitely come into things eventually but I’m currently imagining them as their own entirely separate fleet but they’re closely allied and fully integrated with one another. Of those, Palutena, Rosalina, Samus Aran, Kumatora (as an Earthbound character, anyway) and some others would be involved. As would be Urbosa and the Gerudo as a whole.

Battleborn would probably be in this somewhere but I haven’t quite worked them out as yet? Perhaps not as crew members, but definitely people they know/meet/run into, as well as setting relevant events.

Some characters from different series who have likely joined the fleet on their own or do not have a definite origin in mind yet (or I like them but don’t have much information about their series proper) include: Cattleya (Queen’s Blade), Tifa Lockhart and Lulu (Final Fantasy), Princess Bubblegum (Adventure Time), Katara, Toph Bei Fong, Mai, and Korra (Avatar The LAst Airbender and Legend of Korra), Symmetra, Pharah, Bastion, Orisa, Zenyatta, Mei Ling Zhou and many Omnics (Overwatch), Hinata Hyuga, Mei Terumi and Konan (Naruto), Tsuyu, Mina Ashido and lots of other Quirky heroes (BNHA).

There are many species represented within the fleet, descended from individual who joined up and had scores of children. While by no means comprehensive, here is a small list of a number of species to join up in notable numbers: Asari, Krogan, Geth, Quarians and Turians, from the more well-established worlds.

Orcs, Eldar and other space-faring versions of common fantasy races, and serving as a combination of various series’ takes on those beings. Orcs, for instance, are a combination of Warhammer 40k’s Orks with the more benign aspects of Warcraft’s orcs. Grace: My day starts at 5am. It means I can get things done and have some time with Morganne. We’ve started going for little walks together. We go through the parklands near our house. It gives him a little bit of relief, too, because he’s been sitting all day. It’s a special time for us to bond. He can’t articulate if something’s sore. He’ll communicate to me if something’s really bad, but his pain threshold is so high. He’s used to having niggling discomfort.

Elijah understands a lot more than he can say, but because of the extent of brain damage that he had, he also has an intellectual disability. But we’ve been communicating with each other since before he was born. We have our own language and it’s deeply connected.

My experience as a parent directly informs the work I do at BE. I’ve learned huge lessons and I’ve come through the other side of these very complex challenges without a handbook – of course it’s an ongoing and ever-evolving life but now I know how to project my voice when I need to. I also understand the importance of surrendering, and trusting the pathways that life has given me. And don’t get me wrong, it’s really hard sometimes. Especially for people with a disability or people of colour, bla(c)k or Indigenous people, like myself. There’s a lot stacked against you from the get-go. But I’ve been given these tools that I can give to others, so that’s what I do, and I believe a big part of what we’re here to do.

What does next year look like for you and your family?

Elijah finishes school at the end of this year. I’ve been very overwhelmed thinking about what’s next for him. How will the outside world view him and welcome him? How will he take pride in what he’s able to contribute? Who will give him a chance? Will he ever be able to go to the footy and pay his own way? He doesn’t have those opportunities unless I create them for him, so what does this all look like?

Our society is so ableist and doesn’t really embrace or respond well to people with disabilities. We haven’t learnt how to do that. We don’t have important access to people with special needs, so the stigma builds up. We’ve got to smash these stereotypes around who is “normal” and “not normal.” There’s no such thing. Such a journey of “undoing” that needs to be done.

The National Insurance Disability Scheme (NDIS) was given a bunch of money in this year’s budget. Will that be helpful to you in any way?

To some degree, yes, however it’s a real battle to advocate for the requirements and needs for Elijah. Everything they’re affiliated with is privatised. It costs Elijah $870 for a night in respite care, for example, just so I can have a night off. Or go out on a date with my partner. Before NDIS, it was $560 per night. They’ve increased the price so much, because they can. There’s greed at the core of it, not humanity. It’s ridiculous how much everything costs.

I fought for years for Elijah’s standing wheelchair, so he was able to be upright and have the autonomy to change his position of his body with the aid of this amazing wheelchair. Years. I had support from a number of MPs, even a Greens Senator. In the end I showed up with a team of medical experts and Elijah, too, so they could fucking see his face and be confronted with him, as a person. Not a case number. They ended up overturning their decision, but that’s how much effort it took, to be granted something that he is clearly entitled to and that will benefit him greatly.

What’s it been like going from a two person family to three?

Elijah’s Dad and I split up when Elijah was little, so I’ve mostly cared for him on my own. What we have is very sacred to me, so the person who came into it had to be pretty bloody special. I’ve worked really hard on my own reflection of love, recognising areas I needed to work on and undo a lot of the adopted heteronormative world, and look at what love really is.

Then along came Morganne, who is a proud trans man. I think I’ve always been a queer person, but I had a fairly heteronormative outlook. I come from a generation that didn’t have the language around identity that we have now. Morganne and I just connected. He’s half Jamaican, half black, like me. I love that my partner can identify with my cultural roots and what it means to be black and on the outer. He prioritises community and family in the same ways that I do and views life on a deeper level.

Morganne has a rescue dog (Buzz) so when we came together as a family unit, it all made sense, with each of us navigating life as an outsider and actively smashing stereotypes. It’s been really hard, beautiful and easy. All at the same time.

Morganne has beautiful sensibilities and a tenderness that allows him to connect deeply to our lives and apply this to his work as a dog walker/adventurer – but he can also smash out caravan walls.

I saw you guys got a caravan! Any trips planned?

We’ve got to make it accessible for Elijah first, that’s something we’re working on together. It’s a labour of love. And maybe a weekend trip here and there for the two of us if Elijah is in respite care. It’s so hard to find an accessible property, unless we go to a fancy hotel, but that’s not a feasible option, I also like to cook and be in nature when I go away.

Our ultimate dream is to buy some land and create a fully accessible and creative space, where we could build our dream accessible home and build fully accessible guest houses. On the property there would be private healing rooms, studio spaces where we could have artist residencies and creative workshops, and people could host retreats such as creative writing, painting, etc. I want a gallery/museum and a large space for talks, conferences or classes (like yoga and mediation).

There’s such a need for a space like this to exist – where nature surrounds us, where healing can occur and where creativity can be harnessed and explored and where people who have a family member with a disability or special needs can seek respite and a getaway. I know this is a big vision but this is what I’m manifesting!

I feel certain you’re going to make that happen… What brings you joy?

Being a mama brings me joy. My culture, aunties and sisterhood bring me joy. Massaging my son’s legs brings me joy. Bathing my son brings me joy. Being of service to people brings me joy. Holding space for people brings me joy. Wholesome, critical and inspiring conversations bring me joy. People mobilising brings me joy. When I see people show up at a rally because they care about someone other than themselves, when they feel compelled to say: Enough is enough, that brings me joy. We’re shifting the paradigm and that brings me joy.

When it comes to political and social oppressive structures, it’s especially important that privileged people, those who benefit from those structures, are joining the fight. I feel hopeful because I see all these younger generations standing up and pushing back. We’re making ourselves actively responsible for each other. Most people just need an opportunity to do better, and they will.

The Whitney Houston radio station on Spotify. It has Mariah Carey, Lionel Ritchie, Luther Vandross, everyone you need, really!

Sunday morning breakfast ritual?

We often do a big cookup: eggs, greens, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms, whatever we’ve got in the house. Cooking is cathartic and such a loving act for me.

Me time?

Between 6.30-7am I mediate. We have an east-facing window in our living room. I watch the sunrise. It’s nice.
