It's #WIPWednesday so I thought I'd share a bit of the upcoming chapter of How Does Your Garden Grow? (Nominated for the Best Drama and Best Action/Adventure categories for the 2024 Term 2 Fandom Awards!) Have some softness after all they've been through.

He relaxed a little more when Kagome’s hand slipped into his. “Ankle hurting?” he asked. She shook her head, but he watched exactly how she was walking. Just in case. They were lucky that the weather was cooperating, but his nose and the hairs on the back of his ears were telling him that it might storm. The clouds were still off in the distance. For now.

“Kagome-sama, is the spare room made up still?” Jinenji had Shiori on his shoulders. Kagome nodded. “My hut is too small for…” “Of course. Shiori, the room is yours for as long as you need it.” “Thank you, Miss Kagome.” It was fairly obvious that not only was Shiori still recovering physically from the abrupt separation of Merrick from her youki, but also coming to terms with what she had been through and been forced to do for several years. Kagome had given him a surprised but very approving look earlier when he had put his hand out to Shiori to clear the air and tell her he held no hard feelings toward her. He understood how little control over her actions she had. The bat hanyou had been even more surprised than Kagome, but she didn’t know him like Kagome did. “Your kindness…” She fell into silence, tears in her eyes. “You deserve a second chance, just as much as anyone,” Kagome said softly.  Inuyasha felt her hand grip his a little tighter, the hum of their connection intensifying for a moment. They didn’t look at one another, but they didn’t need to. “It will be nice to have so much life in the house again. It’s been… a really long time.” The tiniest edge of sadness in her scent faded so quickly, Inuyasha almost wondered if he’d imagined it. But the smile on her face was happy again, even with the tiniest tear at the corner of her eye. He knew that her family had been gone for some time… but he didn’t know for how long or what had happened. That was something to talk about later, once she felt comfortable to do so, not now, no matter how curious he was.

3, 6, 17, & 29 for the AO3 wrapped ask?

Like I said in the other one, I realized after reblogging that post that the only stuff I published on ao3 this year was additional chapters on something I've been working on for ages, so I'm answering for all my fics.

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

Probably "when you wake there's something for it" (I don't love the title, actually) which is Costis/Kamet, set after RotT. I felt like I did a decent job of imitating the vibe of the books, and a few people agreed.

Favorite title you used

I'm gonna go with "when the night falls, my lonely heart calls" for an AU where I made the characters dancers, because the musical reference is both apt and very funny

Your favorite character to write this year?

Probably Fish, one of my OCs from "how does your garden grow?" which is the one fic I actually have published stuff from this year. The nature of Elsewhere University is that most of the characters you're gonna write about are OCs, and I've been having a blast with it.

Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

This one's hard--my favorite stuff I've written this year has probably been original fiction but we're talking about ao3 here. I've been really rushing and publishing chapters of "how does your garden grow?" during nano because I just want to finish the damn thing, so the writing isn't very polished. (I'm taking a little writing break, but I really do hope to finish it up (except for the planned multimedia epilogue) in the next few months.)

Um, okay, after looking back at "garden" I think this part is too long/not that interesting out of context to quote. But I love the part in Chapter 15 where Hilarion is being questioned because it was fun to write, for Certain Devious Little Reasons.

"There have been a lot of comments about the wonderful frocks I got to wear. We had a lot of very good costume supervisors and costume designers. Barbara Kronig was one of the original ones. She worked with the late Sheila Buckland who had an incredible store of vintage frocks, most of which I wore in the series. Sheila was very pleased with me because when the frocks were returned she always used to say she couldn't tell it had been worn. Because I really take care of costume, I'm very particular about that. Sheila was meticulous to a degree, she really was, and I've got the most wonderful shoes to wear as well. The Elain I read may not feel empowered by the athletic ability to master violence, ruckus, and battle. But, that doesn't make a character feeble. Seems to me, she feels empowered when cultivating Healing...nurturing a landscape (and others) into that journey is a slow, difficult, courageous, investment.

It's dazzling to be the storm. But, it can be harrowing to stand as an eye within it, knowing your weapons are different. And, as best as one can, make space for refuge. They're all necessary roles in freedom fights; they're all differently brutal, too. (Elain doesn't knock whiskey shots and tear her bare hands up for nothing.) Az doesn't devalue it, nor Feyre, and neither did Nesta when she insulted Elain for being "useless." At the time, Nesta was too broken and afraid to be vulnerable.

Whether it's appreciated or not, Elain rides for her people. And I expect she is trying to make up for when she didn't, by engaging her unique strengths.
