garden updateee (long post lmao)

peach tree first:

have harvested upwards of 50 peaches from it. have invited the neighbors to freely take peaches (don't think they have tho). have given peaches to my brother. so many are getting partly eaten by critters (i don't mind this)

probably have an additional 30-40 in the worm bin (partly eaten ones, gloopy ones, ones that were seriously damaged early on, etc)

ended up with two gallon bags full - and i mean full - of frozen peach slices and a good bit of peach sauce (well, i call it that, but it's really just cooked down/pureed peaches and a bit of sugar. it's good!)

could i have been more productive with it? yeah! however! wasn't expecting this at all! i cannot stress enough how much of a surprise this has been

after all the peaches have been harvested im gonna trim this poor tree down so hard. bc at present it isn't just bowing a bit under the weight, the main trunk goes up and up... and then starts coming sharply back down. roughly like so:

gonna try to espalier it a bit. there are lower branches that i'm going to be keeping and hopefully i can get some wire or something to give it some support, bc clearly during growing and harvest seasons it's gonna need that support. but i'm taking the height off... again, lmao. i've already done this!!!! it is growing so much

however, i think i know why. about midway through last year, we moved the worm bin over near it. and the worm bin has holes drilled in the bottom. so all those nutrients have been sinking into the soil and i think the peach tree was just like oh? nutrience? for me??? and went apeshit lmao

other garden news:

although i've mostly been talking about the peach tree, many things are going above and beyond. the rose bush out front is covered with rose hips that are probably about as wide as a half dollar? and it's grown to about halfway up the second floor. ridiculous. some of the canes are easily as wide as a quarter

we also have a grape. idk what type bc like the smartest person imaginable, i lost the tag. also i don't think it's ever gonna fruit but that is okay bc it is a sprawling beast and beautiful and it is sending vines up that are on the first floor roof

a lot of plants i have mostly to control temperatures indoors. so the rose bush covers the front of the house and some of the dark roof shingles, while the mystery tree and grape cover another part of the house. i was letting the peach tree get a bit taller to become a shade tree since it wasn't seeming to bear (but still not ridiculously tall!) but uh. A Mistake 😂

currently in the process of getting one of the many many manyyyy marionberry canes to root so that i can plant some in the backyard. it's very well established along the side yard and we get a ton of fruit from it, so why not just keep it going?

and we have a nectarine tree out back that's in its.... hmm. second or third year, but i think second. it's older than that, but in terms of being in our garden. so it's not bearing yet, no real surprise, and it's having some of the same issues the peach tree originally had, but the peach tree is no longer afflicted so i suspect the nectarine will end up okay as well

gonna be repositioning the metal gazebo frame (canvas top long since destroyed) into the center of the yard so that we can safely hang a new tarp from it and provide some central shade. looking forward to that, altho it'll be a lot of work. been using the water i saved up all during the rainy season and so far i still have a lot, which is nice - been doing a lot of water-wise planting and letting things get their own water and all. i've managed to keep the bucket pond going even tho the plastic is starting to crack and i'm dreading the eventual day the whole thing goes... sm life in there

but it's cracking bc the winters are getting so cold that the water freezes several inches down and expands, so it's like... rly tricky to deal with? debating about getting a solar powered water bubbler for it. just smth to keep the water moving a little bit and hopefully prevent it from freezing sm

i have mulched a tremendous amount this year, as i usually do. countless cardboard boxes - only plain ones, or ones with dyed parts removed, and always removing all the tape. forever trying to reuse stuff. there are still problem areas in the back and front yards, but some can't really be dealt with - like we have a lot of stray cats in the area and they sure do like to use yards as litter boxes 🙃like they're just gonna be here, it's a thing, but it does mean taking that into consideration wrt what/how we grow things

i keep getting frustrated and sad with how many things are dying out there but like. yeah. it's gonna happen. a) transplant shock is a thing, no matter how careful i try to be, b) it's hard to tell how heavily i should water things tbph, c) our soil is different all over the place, and the soil out front is very poor - which some things prefer! but definitely not all, and d) climate change. even hardy natives aren't necessarily hardy anymore, and over time native ranges seem to be shifting, so it's difficult

and my apples are dwarfs?? i’ve been stressing abt them so close to the house and was trying to find an arborist to help me move them but do you think they’ll be ok with just some root guard? omg i’m so sorry to bug you feel free to ignore!

There’s no issues and I welcome the asks! This enthusiasm gives me old tumblr days vibes that I think many miss these days lol.

Inevitably most domestic fruiting woody plants need a trim up of pruning for maintenance. Some types don’t need it overall or don’t need it at certain life stages, but those are the lucky cases.

While I’m currently still in the midst of pruning season as of writing this, your photos imply it’s a smidgen late for you to be doing any at all unless it’s either for major issues or dead/diseased wood; it’s generally best to get the pruning before said woody plants leaf out but while they are still dormant to reduce shock, to avoid damaging freshly sprouted growth (since if you’re early enough there’s no leaves to worry about), and keep them wasting energy on wood that’ll be cut off in the process. I recall I got my info on pruning mostly by book literature but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some niche videos on the topic online- there are yt video journals and tutorials for niche fruits like Asimina triloba cultivation/maintenance so surely less exotic stuff would have online tutorials on it. Do try to find more than one source to try to average out the answers they give lest they give different answers or overlook different details (gardening can get subjective sometimes after all). If I recall the rule for Grape vines you try to keep one “lead vine” intact to be the one to produce new yearly branches/shoots that will then produce the grapes.

Fortunately I think you don’t have to worry about any issues with skipping the livewood pruning this year; let this year just help you get more familiar with what you’re dealing with.

For next year I can at least say from my own experience a few points; universally you want to prune to remove dead, damaged, and diseased wood, as well as any branches that crisscross with each other (since those will just make damaged wood from rubbing if allowed to stay), and generally you try to not cut more than a 3rd of the live growth (even if it means you gotta wait next year to fully shape a tree if the pruning work for some reason is major- which is my case with my older unkempt trees) to avoid having the pruning reach deadly amounts (there are exceptions- most Clematis are pruned to extreme amounts most of the time, well established Grapes and Kiwis can have a lot taken off too in certain cases). Oh and big one that newbies can miss; if you're getting tools, try to get bypass type pruning tools, anvil type pruning tools do damage to live wood (since they crush moreso to cut unlike bypass) and are better for exclusively dead/removed wood.

Observe what others do to their trees of similar kind to your own; I learned a little bit on what to do with my own apple trees from seeing what other people have done to their apple trees of similar size in my region.

It’s not easy at first but set goals for what you’re pruning. In my case a good chunk of my apple trees are quite old (we’re talking hollowed-out old for many of these trees), so my goal is generally to help extend their lives as well as fruit production as a bonus, so I try to reduce the sources of major weight burden on the large crumbling branches. Another goal in my case is making it that the branches are not as high up so that they are easier to maintain and harvest from, since yet again, my trees are on the larger/older end of what to expect from an orchard.

While not an option for me consulting Arborists is definitely not a bad option if you’re free to throw the cash.

Pruning rules/goals for your dwarf apple trees will probably be slightly different from what I do for my own trees since you’re dealing with very different growth forms from my own.

I am not 100% certain your apple trees by the house are dwarves but their growth habit feels more like what I’d expect/imagine from dwarf/semidwarf trees; as to what fruit variety it could be a lot of possibilities; apple trees tend to be grafted onto rootstock that affects their hardiness/size, so you could have similar cultivars to what I have for the fruit/scionwood but would definitely have very different cultivars for the rootstock that they are attached to. If the previous owners knew what they were doing they would’ve chosen dwarf roostock cultivars to avoid them becoming troublesome so close to the house.

In my opinion dwarves or not they are a bit big already to risk moving/transplanting away from the house without a painful and risky amount of long (worst case possibly years worth) of aftercare; if that is or was truly an issue you’d be better off getting new rootstock to plant in the new locations and grafting onto them from the house specimens onto those new rootstocks (you can hire/ask experts if you can’t quite do it yourself, we had a family member of a family member help save a heritage cultivar in our orchard by getting some successful grafts from the dying tree. I plan to do some grafting myself down the road I just dk what to graft rn). I am not familiar with root guard, from what I read it's a brand of fertilizer that claims to help stimulate root growth???

Also note with the Cherry/Plum trees mention before; one of the issues for ID sometimes for them is there’s just, a lot of species, a lot hybridize together, and that’s not even considering/factoring in domestic hybrids/cultivars where the diversity can be as wide as it is for apple cultivars. It can really muddy the waters for identification down to the exact kind unless you’re dealing with a very sharp specialist or a very distinct variety, and even then some may struggle with certain cases.

Lucky you to also have something as fancy as a finger lime! I already guessed so but that definitely solidified my guess that you are in a warmer growing zone from me lol.

Isa  strode through the halls of the ship taking stock of the panels that had started to rust and the lights that were almost too dim to see by. Their home was in desperate need of repair, but what could she do? The Norton had been independent from the Fleet for generations. She would not be the leader that went crawling back to them. If the leaders before her made it work, then she would too.

The walk to the Organic District was always the highlight of Isa’s day. Despite having a variety of plants around the ship, it was the Organic District that made her feel truly at peace. The cavernous space was filled with plants of all shapes and sizes, though predominately it was used was to grow food. Over time Isa knew the citizens wanted, no needed, more. Soon the space was expanded to accommodate the growth of household plants. Not only did it help with moral, but the health of everyone aboard improved as well. Citizens could request a plant for their homes or petition for a few in public spaces. The Organic District however still housed the majority. 

Isa slowly made her rounds through the vegetable gardens, observing the Gardeners as they worked and nodding respectfully as they bowed before returning to their work.

“Queen Isa!” A short young woman called, leaning around a trellis covered in grape vines. “You’re just in time! Some of the harvest is ready. Have some!” Isa struggled to place the girls face. With so many citizens aboard she couldn’t quite remember everyone’s name no matter how hard she tried. Instead she glanced down at the bucket in her hand filled with grapes. She plucked a few from the top, popping one into her mouth with a satisfied moan.

“These are perfect! Make sure you visit the school with your first batch before delivering the rest to the kitchens.”

“Already done! I took them earlier this morning.”

“Wonderful.” She place another in her mouth, tucking it into her cheek before continuing. “What would we do without you all.” Isa raised her voice, hoping the others working diligently around them would hear the praise. She patted the woman on her back before continuing her rounds. 

After her diligent circuit around the gardens Isa came to a stop at the edge of the dome. This was her favorite spot on the whole ship. Tucked far away from everything was a small park few seemed to ever frequent. Well trimmed trees and bushes blocked off much of the area, making it feel like a whole new world away from the chaos of the ship. Isa liked to take a moment to stare out the dome at the vastness of space and just, breathe. 

Isa pressed her back to a tree, sliding down as she released a deep exhale. For just a few moments she could forget she was Queen of the Norton and just be Isa. She nibbled the grapes she carried as she stared out, so stuck in her own head she almost missed the the blinking lights off in the distance. Isa stood, pressing as close to the glass as she could as she squinted. Yes it was there. A ship. As it drew closer Isa could make out the distinctive features that told her this was another ship from the Fleet. 

When was the last time they had been visited by another ship in the Fleet? Not in her lifetime for sure and if she could remember their history correctly, which she often didn’t, it wasn’t anytime during the last ruler’s reign either.

Shoving the last of the grapes into her mouth Isa quickly but calmly hurried back through the ship to the Hub. Just as she passed the guards and entered the room she could make out a crackling over the communications system.

“Say that again,” her viceroy said as he adjusted dials. He looked up as she approached giving her a frustrated shrug as he spoke away from the microphone. “These things haven’t been used in years Ma’am. I think we just have to match with the frequency of the approaching ship to clear the line of communication.” He turned the dials a moment more before the static lowered to a soft almost nonexistent hum.

“This is the general of the Yutan. Signal seems to be strong now. Can you confirm?”

“Yes General we hear you clearly now,” her viceroy said.

“Good. It’s good to hear from you. It’s been far too long.”

“What can we do for you general…?” Her viceroy let the question hang, signaling to their own general to be alert.

“General Karvin. The ruler of Yutan is requesting a meeting with your leader.”

The Viceroy glanced at Isa, who contemplated for only a moment before nodding. “You have our interest. Dock at bay 3, but please wait for our signal to disembark.”

“Understood. We will signal when we are coupled.” The line when silent, the absence of static causing an awkward silence as everyone turned to Isa.

“I suppose we should see what they want.” She turned to the general who had stationed himself to her left. “I want a small escort. We don’t know what they want so we need to remain cautious.” The general bowed to her and turned, signaling for three other guards stationed around the room to join him. 

Isa turned toward her rooms, the ornate door to the left of the Hub flanked by more of her ever present guards. In her rooms she quickly changed, secretly happy to finally have a reason to wear the ceremonial dress she had so few opportunities to show off. It was passed down through the rulers, worn by queens and queen consorts alike. Or on several occasions it was left stored away when there wasn’t a ruling queen. It was always repaired and improved before it was passed on however, causing the garment to have an eclectic assortment of styles visible throughout. Isa loved it and despite it being a symbol of the end of her reign, she couldn’t wait to add her own flare. 

She emerged a few minutes later, her viceroy waiting in his own ceremonial uniform.

“Maybe we make the Yutan wait a little longer? A show of authority?”

Isa frowned at him. “Don’t be rude Jaime. I don’t want our first visitors ever to start with a negative impression of us. Let’s go.” Isa left the Hub and took the halls toward the bays. The click of boots falling in line behind her was comforting. Now that she was on her way a nervous flutter began in her stomach. She willed herself to remain calm. She was the Queen of the Norton She would act like it and make sure these visitors knew it too.

At the bay Isa nodded to her general who opened a panel to the right of the door, entering a code that would signal to the Yutan that they were clear to board. 

Moments later the door swooshed open and a small line of guards not unlike her own filtered out. Behind them came who must of been the general they spoke to, his uniform more ornate than the rest.

“Your Highness. I am general Karvin. It is my honor to present the ruler of the Yutan, King Harper.” Behind him stood a woman around his height and hair cut short, a bob that stopped just below her ears and framed her face just right. Her uniform was relatively basic given she was the ruler of a ship herself. Had she not been introduced to Isa as a King, she would not have known this person was a fellow ruler.

“Your Majesty.” Isa gave a shallow bow. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Would you and your entourage care to join us for a meal as we discuss your visit?” Isa noted the glance that passed between her visitors, filing it away to discuss later. King Harper approached her, maintaining a respectful distance before bowing deeply at the waist.

“It would be an honor. We have a lot to talk about.” She stepped beside Isa, offering her elbow. Isa placed her hand in the crook of the King’s arm, signaling to her guards to follow at a distance, noting King Harper did the same.

“I admit your visit is quite a shock. By now I expect my whole ship must be talking about it.”

Harper laughed, the sound causing an all together different kind of flutter in Isa’s stomach. “I imagine so,” she said. “From what I understand your people have remained completely separate from the rest of the Fleet right?”

“From what I understand, every ship in the Fleet became an independent nation.”

“Oh we have, don’t get me wrong. Your ship, however, is the only one that hasn’t had to communicate with any others.” King Harper tried to mask a tone of sadness, but Isa picked up on it regardless.

They arrived at the mess hall, noting the few individuals dotted around the tables for an early dinner. She steered them to her private dining room, blushing as King Harper held the door open for her and pulled out her chair. They settled in, the guards spreading out around the room to watch as plates of food were brought in.

“Not to rush things along, but I would like to know the reason for your sudden visit,” Isa said before digging into a plate piled with perfectly seasoned vegetables. “I actually had a different proposal,” she said. Harper placed her hand hesitantly over Isa’s. It was a presumptuous move, but one Isa did not want to correct. “I think we should combine our ships. My advisors have devised a plan that would seamlessly fuse our ships, ultimately doubling the space of your ship. We already have significantly fewer citizens. No one would suffer.” She glanced away, causing Isa to lean forward squinting at her. 

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“We would need to be married to properly combine our ships. Politically I mean.” King Harper released her hand as Isa jolted back.

“You want my throne?”

“No! Absolutely not your Highness.” She sighed, finally loosing her composer and running a hand through her hair. Isa found the gesture oddly charming and couldn’t help but smile at how disheveled the king looked. “Look,” she finally said. “I want what is best for my people and that is you. Your ship is the only one that hasn’t needed help from the Fleet in all our history. You can clearly take care of your people and we need that.” Harper slide from her chair, kneeling before Isa and taking her hand. The act was so stunning she let the King stroke her hand softly as she continued. “I propose a marriage in which I am not a ruler but your King Consort. You would remain the sole ruler of our combined ships. Everything we have will be yours. I will simply support you in taking care of our people.”

Isa stared into the Kings eyes, letting the information sink in. To double her the space of her ship with only a fraction of the population increasing sounded too good to be true. She knew she should say yes for those reasons alone. She had to look away however at the selfish thoughts that began to invade her mind as well. 

There had been plenty of offers for her hand over the years. Many citizens flitting with her and attempting to shower her with affection. She’d turned them all down, never quite feeling right committing her life to another. Kneeling before her however was a beautiful woman who clearly just wanted what was best for her people. If Isa were being honest with herself she’d already enjoyed the short amount of time they spent together, as well as the butterflies that danced under her skin every time she looked at the King. Maybe committing herself to this woman would not be such a bad idea.

Isa had to press down the guilt that was building up however at not telling the King about the repairs her ship needed, the effort and finances they seemed to lack for these seemingly inconsequential things. Perhaps this union could fix as much for them as the people of the Yutan.

Hello hello~

I've got some garden pic updates :)

New sunflower patch, I'm only doing a small patch here as It's to tide over till I get some more scaping/zoning planned up. These are from 4th gen mix seeds (I got them from some friends and classmates)

Same row, I purchased some jalapeno starts as the peppers I seed started are still super small currently.

Same tows, some super late starting spinach. I'm letting it grow to see if I can see what seeding for spinach is like and share that with you all :)

In the white line/square is a wild seeded chamomile plant. I pulled it and gave it to the chickens as a treat.

Further up is the remaining carrots and some tomato starts we purchased, now interplanted with them. There's 2 slicer types and a grape variety. I don't remember offhand if they are determinate or indeterminate. Unfortunately the ones I seed started died off once they were returned outside.

:( thankfully we've all agreed to go light on tomatoes this year due to that.

In ground some direct seeded squash, these are a patty pan/Starburst variety and a couple zuchinni. With luck this year we avoid the squash bugs!

The direct seeded nasturtium in the back and front is careless wildseeded chamomile (I swear it's the best way to grow it and will be sowing another patch like this)

The few eggplants I've left for now have flowers, pointed to by the white arrows.

And the broccoli currently, the seeds aren't ready quite yet, but I pulled a pod the birds got to to check them, still pretty green but the seeds are of good size. Still lots of lovely flowers for the various pollinators of the area. Unlike carrot flowers, broccoli seems to attract mostly bees (the honeybees) I haven't seen too many butterflies, moths, flies or otherwise.

No ants, aphids and thankfully no squash bugs so far.

I did see some ladybird gators while doing maintenence cleanup. Some small soil roachs in a few of the beds earthworms while trimming off roots to old sunflower stems.

Our parrot visitors have stopped coming by, unfortunatly we no longer have any sunflower heads available for them. When more sunflowers come in I hope they will visit again, or perhaps even when the hollyhocks start seeding. Plenty of the smaller birds of the area still visiting though. I find the thought they might get broccoli seed and wild seed it elsewhere very funny.

This week I plan to work on getting a water line in and some more deep beds set up for growing more sweet potato vines/spuds. As well as getting some melon seeds direct seeded if I can (I may need more soil first to refill the bed).

Started some new spuds to vine for the sweet potato's and ordered some sunchoke tubers and seeds to start out some new herbs/spices and teas.
