Senate probes Customs' seizure of N85m worth of rice, other items in Ibadan -NigPilot
Senate has mandated its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate the alleged invasion of rice traders’ shops by men of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, that resulted in the carting away of goods to the tune of N85 million. This followed receipt of a petition from the Ibadan Foodstuff Sellers Association addressed to the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan through the senator representing Oyo South District, Kola Balogun. According to the lawmaker, 3,046 bags of rice worth N79,196,000; 25kg vegetable oil numbering 14; the cash of N4,862,000; and 15kg bags of gari were carted away by men of the NCS during a forceful invasion of shops in the absence of the traders. The association, in the petition, stated: “the unfortunate night invasion of the Bodija International Market, Ibadan and the forceful breakage of the rice traders’ shops by men of the Nigerian Customs, Ikeja Unit, Lagos happened on 31st March through 1st April 2021. “Our shops and warehouses were forcefully opened in our absence and the following items were carted away: 3,046 bags of Rice at N26,000 per bag – N79,196,000; 14 (Nos) 25kg Vegetable Oil; Cash of N4,862,000.00; and One (Nos) 15kg Bag of Gari. “It is pertinent to report to you, Sir, that five (5 nos) shops still remain under special white padlock, the same that was put on the forcefully broke ones. “The Ibadan Customs Unit has advised us not to unlock the locked shops for reasons unknown to us and owners of the shops have been rendered helpless. They cannot access their shops and neither can they trade in anything. Their families have been suffering. “We seek the intervention of your highly esteemed office for the immediate return of all the items and cash carted away from our shops and warehouses. “We also seek for the Red Chamber’s investigation into the reasons behind the forceful raid on our shops. We demand that such raid should stop henceforth and this one should be the last of such action on the innocent peaceful traders in our market. “We demand that tight security arrangements be put in place in the market by the government to protect our products after closure from business activities of the day to avoid looting of our shops by hoodlums who might want to follow the illegal footsteps of the men of the Nigerian Customs Service. “We demand that the Nigeria Customs should be warned against the use of the crude and cruel method of infringing on traders’ properties and products. “That the action of the Nigeria Customs is seriously infringing on our rights to trade in legitimate items within the country as the midnight invasion violates all democratic principles.” The Senate President referred the petition to the Senator Ayo Akinyelure-led Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition for investigation. Robbers raid Oyo House of Assembly complex, made away with valuables
Suspected hoodlums have stolen electric cables valued at N500,000.00 from the Oyo State House of Assembly complex, the assembly’s spokesperson, Kemi Ojoawo said on Wednesday. According to the spokesperson, the suspected robbers, broke into the assembly complex last Thursday night and made away with the item. A source told FREELANEWSthat the theft has been slowing down legislative activities in the state. Another source who asked not to be named said that stealing of electric cables and other properties House of Assembly complex is not new. He alleged that electrical cables, fans, computers and other common items often go missing within the complex. “I can recall this to be the third time cables were stolen overnight. Though, it is the first time with the ninth assembly, but I remembered it happened twice during the eighth assembly and they spent close to one million naira to fix the damage. “The unfortunate thing is that despite the investigation so far about it, the culprits have not been apprehended. This is why it continues.” Mrs Ojoawo in a telephone conversation with FREELANEWSsaid the house is investigating the alleged theft. She said, “The situation is still under control. We are still investigating the matter. We are in charge. We will soon come out with our own position.” Read the full article

Why we nullify law authorising pension for ex-governors - Zamfara lawmakers
The Zamfara State House of Assembly said it repealed the law that allowed payment of pension and allowances for former governors and their deputy because the payment is made at the detriment of retired civil servants who have not been paid their entitlements over the years. However, the state’s house of assembly on Tuesday abolished the law authorising the payment of pensions to these categories of former officials. The House leader who presented the bill before the house, Faruk Dosara, (PDP Maradun), urged his collogues to consider the ‘complete repeal’ of the law “which provides the jamboree payment for the former political leaders of the state at the detriment of the retired civil servants who have not been paid their entitlements over the years.” According to the lawmaker, these categories of past leaders “are collecting over N700 million annually” which he said the present economy cannot accommodate. Seconding the motion, Tukur Birnin-Tudu PDP member representing Bakura local government said the abolition of the law is necessary. After deliberations, the speaker, Nasiru Magarya pushed the process; the bill passed both first and second readings. Later, the house went for a committee of the whole after which the bill went for a third reading. The bill will now be sent to the governor for his assent, the spokesman said. “With this development, all past political leaders in Zamfara will longer enjoy any entitlements unless those prescribed by the national revenue mobilisation allocation and fiscal commission,” Mr Jafaru quoted the speaker as saying in the statement. The spokesperson of the state’s assembly, Mustapha Jafaru, in a statement to journalists said the ‘abolished’ law also affects ex-speakers of the House of Assembly and their deputies. The development is coming days after a former governor, Abdul’aziz Yari, in a leaked letter to the state government, requested his N10 million ‘monthly upkeep’, which he said had not been paid for some months. The media aide to Governor Bello Matawalle, Yusuf Idris, on Tuesday confirmed that Yari had written the request. He said two days later he (Yari) also sent another letter of reminder demanding the payment. Read the full article

Tribunal sacks Oyo PDP lawmaker, declares APC candidate winner
The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Oyo State, on Saturday, sacked the elected People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Irepo/Olorunsogo State Constituency, Hon. Kazeem Olayanju. The Tribunal subsequently ordered that the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate and petitioner Mustapha Ajibola Azeez be sworn in as the winner of the February 23 , 2019 general election . In the petition number EPT/OY/SHA/30/2019, the APC candidate had challenged the victory of Olayanju of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election . In the judgment, which lasted for three and a half hours, the three-man panel of the tribunal, led by Justice Anthony Akpovi, unanimously agreed that the declaration of the PDP candidate as winner of the election was wrong while upholding the petition of the APC candidate seeking for a declaration that he won the poll.
The Tribunal further averred that the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) erred in returning the PDP candidate as winner of the election. The judgment, read by Akpovi, said that the petitioner succeeded to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the respondent did not win the election. Akpovi said that the allegations by the petitioner had merit, especially with regard to the cancellation of results in Ward 3, which it declared wrongful on the part of the electoral umpire. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 out of the 34 seats in the Oyo State House of Assembly while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won five seats. The PDP won in Saki West, Ibadan West, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan North East, Ibadan South East, Ibadan South West, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa North, Ibarapa East, Ido, Atisbo, Saki East, and Irepo/Olorunsogo. Others are Iseyin/Itesiwaju, Kajola, Iwajowa, Lagelu, Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South, Oluyole, Ona-Ara and Oorelope, while APC won in Oriire, Afijio, Oyo East and Oyo West , Ogo-Oluwa/ Surulere. Emancipation Square (Old Spanish Town Square), Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica
[Fun Fact]
Spanish Town, built by the Spanish after Sevilla Nueva (New Seville) was abandoned, dates back from 1534. It was first known as Villa de la Vega, later St. Jago de la Vega and then Spanish Town. The town is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica. It was the capital of Spanish Jamaica from 1534 to 1655. When the English captured the island in 1655, Spanish Town remained the capital of the island until 1872 when this status was conferred on Kingston. Spanish Town still possesses memories of the past with its many historical buildings. The Emancipation Square is generally acclaimed to be the most impressive of its kind in the West Indies.
