June 1964. A month into Batman's "New Look" period, Alfred the butler is dramatically killed off in DETECTIVE COMICS #328. Writer Bill Finger gives Alfred a suitably heroic demise, sacrificing his life to save Batman and Robin from the Tri-State Gang.
Ouch. This is fairly grisly for Silver Age DC, and, more significantly, obviously intended to be final. (If you're going to seemingly kill off a character with the intent of bringing them back later, "crushed to death by tons of rock right in front of their closest friends" is probably not the way to go.)
Two points of interest here: First, the Alfred Foundation, as will be explained later, is the antecedent of what later became the Wayne Foundation (whose building was redesigned in the early 1970s), which did not yet exist at this point. Second, it's awkwardly obvious here that Alfred had never been given a canonical last name. In one 1945 story, he'd used the name "Alfred Beagle," but that hadn't been mentioned again afterward. The name "Pennyworth" was first used in 1969, five years after this story.
Why did editor Julius Schwartz kill off Alfred, who'd been a staple of the Batman strip since 1943? According to Schwartz, it was to help lay to rest the insinuations that had been floating around for years (especially in the wake of Frederic Wertham's SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT a decade earlier) that the Wayne household seemed awfully gay. It should be understood that the modern conception of Alfred as a military veteran and one-time badass didn't arise until the 1980s; since his introduction in 1943, Alfred had been primarily a comic relief figure, and generally a bit of a ninny. Schwartz wanted to replace him with a "a sort of chaperoning den mother," which became Dick Grayson's Aunt Harriet, introduced at the end of this story:
Schwartz claimed that he borrowed the name "Aunt Harriet" from the lyrics of the 1929 Hoagy Carmichael standard "Rockin' Chair." Like Alfred, she didn't initially have a last name (the name "Cooper" came from the TV show, and didn't appear in the comics until DETECTIVE COMICS #373). In the comics, she was not as old or quite as matronly as Madge Blake, who played the character on TV; she was perhaps a decade older than Bruce Wayne.
I'm a little skeptical of Schwartz's assertion that his goal in killing off Alfred in favor of Aunt Harriet was to make Bruce and Dick seem less gay. If that was the plan, it wasn't terribly effective: For one, as the TV show demonstrated, her presence in the Wayne household hardly decreased the camp factor, and the principal dynamic of her comics appearances was to have her nosiness constantly threaten to "out" her nephew and his guardian! Moreover, the "New Look" period actually discarded the three recurring female characters who'd previously been positioned as romantic foils (Batwoman/Kathy Kane, Vicki Vale, and Bat-Girl/Betty Kane) — there would be new ones, but they wouldn't appear for a while, nor did Catwoman (who had been absent since 1956 and didn't return to the comics until 1966) — so Schwartz actually cemented Bruce and Dick's "confirmed bachelor" status, at least for a while.
My guess is that Schwartz, who had been given just six months to turn around BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS (whose sales were in very bad shape in 1963–1964), figured that killing Alfred would be an easy way to shake things up a bit. As with the yellow oval Carmine Infantino added to Batman's chest emblem, it was a dramatic but largely cosmetic gesture that didn't really alter the direction of the strip in any very meaningful way.

Well that was entertaining. Liveblogging notes for episode 1 below.
Lot of mirrors in this scene (often signpost deception). Kinn is executing a "betrayer," is there other stuff happening here? Opening scenes set up both characters at ease in their respective domains. Porsche has everyone at the bar eating out of his hand. Kinn is in control in the scene with the Italians (at least for the moment). Otherwise a study in contrasts and unbuttoned shirts.
And now presumably the Italians are trying to kill Kinn. Big, WTF I thought you were supposed to be the competent one? J/k I've been spoiled for this whole show and I feel bad for him and now he's gotten shot. Motorcycle guys not messing around. Kinn is a pretty good shot though? I like that perspective spin on the hallway!
Porsche, meanwhile, is having an excellent evening which gets very exciting. And lucrative!
The hairstylists on this set must have had fun arranging those stray wisps just right on Mile.
15 minutes into this, and Kinn's watching him ride off like Cinderella leaving the ball at midnight. All the bodyguards pull up like "oh thank god you're okay, we aren't going to get killed for failing at our job."
The Kittisawat house looks nice! Thank you for the slow pan, I love examining set dressing details. House plants, knick-knacks, and family photos. This is not the bachelor den one might expect from a household headed by a 23-year-old bartender/street fighter; someone has standards. Porsche's otherwise excellent evening has been dampened. Family has money troubles, can either pay school or rent - or, implied, food - but not all three.
Uncle lost all his money on CRYPTO? I was not expecting that. Everybody in this family is lying to each other, yikes.
More fancy camera angles! Character establishment! Porsche is a badass but he's also fighting a losing battle against The System to keep his little brother housed and fed. Bro's shirt says "today is a good day" in case we didn't realize that he is Innocence personified in all of this.
How does Uncle know where to move stolen watches? Kinda sus. Seriously Porsche you won't let your brother have a beer? The internet tells me that the drinking age in Thailand is 20.
Halfway point. Kinn's dad is doing pottery and giving Kinn a hard time. Kinn appears determined to keep handling the Italians his own way, and also to find Porsche.
Wait, Porsche is still in school TOO? At least occasionally? Also he is a brat. Also maybe don't give your friends' names as yours to Mafia people, dude. I mean, you were obviously lying, but still.
Uh-oh, busted. Kinn is way too amused about this whole thing. LOL we get it you are in fact high-class Mafia. Porsche is out of his depth and knows it. Not too high-class for straight-up threats.
This has to be the weirdest recruitment pitch I have ever seen. Just saying you could have gone with the money first rather than the kidnapping? Good on Porsche for not taking this bullshit lying down. Good on Kinn for being willing to get messed up. Good on Porsche for fighting dirty. Kinn what is your angle here?
Wait this was KORN's idea? Because Korn is thinking a bodyguard who can't be bought might be valuable? Kinn looks so thoroughly annoyed LOL.
Porsche's day keeps getting shittier as he has escaped but the house is busted up and rather than paying off their debts Uncle lost their money gambling. Uncle is a real asshole? Porsche is in a bind.
Chay is crying. :(( Porsche is crying. :((((( Oh no. This is great, you can see Porsche's terrible decision coming a mile away. More lying! Fantastic!!
Porsche has been there a hot minute and Big is already like "I do NOT get paid enough for this." Unfortunately for him both of the Theerapanyakuls appear to appreciate a gutsy smartass. Kinn is perplexed by whatever his father is up to? Korn seems satisfied. Love me a symbolic chess game.

25 July
The detective came back today.
He sat down across from me, in his usual chair in the living room, lit a cigarette, and declared with remarkable indifference, “I regret to announce that I am not engaged to be married.”
I could only stare at him with equal parts bafflement and frustration.
“It is of no matter,” he said as though that would put all of my concerns to rest, “the housekeeper was but one potential avenue into the blackmailer’s household.”
At that point, I did speak up, “A blackmailer?”
“Come now, Doctor, surely you have not forgotten our noble bachelor whose bride was warned away on their wedding day. With the aid of our Porlocks I have found the man behind it at last. It is only fitting that our Moriarty would have a blackmailer on his retinue. I meant to woo his housekeeper—a charming lady, I suppose, a decade older than ourselves—to gain entry to the household, but alas my rival suitor—a rakish fellow, rugged for my tastes—had already won out and took issue with my attempts to court his bride.”
“What on Earth are you trying to accomplish?”
“I have always had some notion that I would have made a highly efficient criminal, and it is for the most morally justifiable cause. I mean to burgle the blackmailer’s house, destroy the evidence he holds over his victims, and through his records, find the identity of our Moriarty at last. However, I do have some scruples about bringing you with me tonight. I cannot deny that we will be putting ourselves in a most precarious position. What say you? Does the benefit outweigh the risk?”
“This is absurd!” I said as soon as I found my voice again. “You’re going to burgle a blackmailer? And you want me to come? I’m a doctor, I’m not even a detective!”
The detective coldly raised his chin. “Where is your nerve of steel, Doctor? It is nothing worse than breaking and entering.” He leaned toward me and lowered his voice. “Your presence is invaluable to me. There is no one else I trust to accompany me into the dragon’s den.”
“No, I’m not falling for that one. Why do you really want me along?”
“Come now, Doctor, use that innate cleverness which is the delight of all your friends.”
“I can’t deny it’s been something going on all of these investigations with you, but I’m your flatmate, not your beleaguered assistant.”
“No, you are the grit in the subtle reasoning machine.”
“What are you even saying? Is that another quote? Can you stop playing Sherlock Holmes for just a moment?”
“I assure you that this is best for everyone.”
“For you maybe, but I’m not your Dr. Watson.”
“Please, Doctor, if you were going to leave England you would have done so many months ago.”
“That’s it, I’m done!”
“Come now, Doctor-“
“My name is Solomon.”
I’m up in my room now. I can’t stay here. This isn’t working. But I don’t know where else to go. Except for back home, to my parents’ house. It’s been so long since I’ve been back.

Angela emerges from the photobooth more confused about her love life than ever. Dating around was fun and all, but maybe at some point she needed to grow up? She did miss the companionship of an actual relationship. But there were so many guys she loved! How was she supossed to pick one? What if she picked wrong?
Gunnar feels none of this conflict, as far as I can see. Just pleased with himself & one step closer to that “20 woohoos” goal. (I can’t remember if it’s his actual LTW, but he does roll it pretty frequently.)

So I was inspired by @kiragecko to create a floor plan of Wayne Manor. I started out trying to be accurate to the comics, but eventually gave up because it changed so many times that was impossible. This is more like the manor shown in recent comics, specifically from when Dick and Damian were Batman and Robin, but I also pulled references from a bunch of different comics and from different timelines and the Gotham tv show. At this point this is the floor plan for the mashed up canon that exists in my head. Aside from @kiragecko’s own floor plan, other references included Biltmore, Filoli, Casa Loma, The Breakers, Rosecliff, Marble House, and Darlington/Crocker Mansion. I tried to make it mostly to scale, although I hand drew this and then cleaned it up digitally, so it’s probably a little off in some places. Blue text is what the current Wayne/Batfamily use the rooms for, green is what the historical use was, and black is what they’d likely be listed as on a real estate listing. Green doors are hidden or jib doors, basically doors that aren’t obvious but don’t require a pass code to get through or lead to the Batcave. Purple “doors” are the secret passages like the one hidden behind the grandfather clock that even an observant bystander shouldn’t be able to find and involve much more security. More explanations under the cut.
So the comics are unclear on how the Waynes got Wayne Manor. They say that Nathan van Derm designed it for Darius Wayne, but then also that Darius’s grandsons, Solomon and Joshua, purchased it after Jerome van Derm died. At some point after Joshua died (in 1860), the manor was abandoned and Solomon’s son Alan (Bruce’s great-great-grandfather) rebuilt it.
In my head, the east and west wings of the W would have been later editions. The first version of the manor, up to at least when Alan Wayne rebuilt it, would have probably just been the central portion, out to the 2 towers. Original kitchen would have been in the basement, as well as additional servants quarters. It’s not shown on the plans, but in this version the basement has been renovated to include a gym, movie room, and game area (leaving aside the much cooler basement underneath.) Also not pictured is the third floor/attic, which includes servants quarters and a third floor sitting room above Thomas Wayne’s den that looks out over the front lawn.
With the east and west wings, you can see the very clear divisions in purpose. The west wing was a guest wing, probably added when serious entertaining became a thing, with a dedicated ballroom and guest bedrooms. The east wing downstairs was the servants’ wing - kitchen, staff dining room, butler’s pantry, bedrooms for upper household staff. East wing upstairs was the children’s/nursery wing.
In the center of the house you can see a male/female divide that went with the historical idea of some rooms (billiard room/smoking room/study/library) being “men’s spaces” and some (drawing room/morning room) being “women’s spaces. The bedrooms for the permanent residents of the manor in the 1860s (Solomon and his wife, Joshua, Celestine) follow this divide as well, though unlike other “great houses” Wayne manor didn’t go so far as to have a separate bachelor’s wing.
Regarding the jib doors vs secret passageways - secret passageways are basically entrances to the batcave, although they would’ve also been used by Solomon and Joshua as part of the underground railroad. Off the servery you can see the entrance to the wine cellar where Joshua’s body was eventually found. The jib doors (in green) would have been used by servants or family members to pass between rooms without going into the main hallways. Great for sneaking up on people!
Ok, going into some more specifics - headcanon time! Basically everything beyond this is just in my head, and the Batfam stuff is set at some point in the future. (It’s a really shame they stopped writing Batman Comics right after Bruce came back from they dead. Ric? Ric who? don’t know what you’re talking about).
First, Celestine Wayne. Celestine Wayne is not a comic character. She was loosely inspired by the history of the Waynes from Gotham the tv show, and by loosely I mean her name and the fact that she lived during the Civil War era. There is a C.L. Wayne from that time period who founded the Gotham Botanical Garden in the comics, and in my head they are definitely the same person. In the Wayne family tree in my head her father was Caleb Wayne, and she was Solomon and Joshua’s cousin who became their ward for.......reasons undecided yet. Her father was leading wagon trains and so never home. Something else happened. You pick! She never married (imagine whatever reason you want here, I tend to stay away from the tv show explanation and go with she just wasn’t interested, but any reason works) and so when she became an adult and was still living at the manor but not the “lady of the house” the floor plan was slightly modified to give her her own suite of rooms. Joshua Wayne has something similar in the sense of having his own private study next to his room, although his were only connected by secret passage. Sometime between Dick moving out and Tim moving in permanently, Dick moved from his childhood room into these rooms (leaving Tim free to move into his old bedroom, a thing that actually happened in the comics). Maybe this happened when he was adopted? Maybe when he and Bruce kinda reconciled after Bruce got his back broken? Who knows! There was definitely a period where to Dick the Manor was Not His Home Anymore, and so in his mind he probably didn’t have a permanent room there (and tried to avoid staying there). Think of the moving to the “grown up full suite” as a really old fashioned way of Bruce or Alfred or both saying “I recognize you’re an adult with your own life and autonomy and I cannot treat you like a child, but also this is your home and you will always have a permanent place here.”
Other rooms of note - most mansions I referenced did not have a dedicated armoury, but it’s Batman! Of course there’s an armoury. For historical artifacts, a lot of these weapons sure seem functional......
The tea room was not originally a tea room but somewhere along the way at least one of the Wayne matriarchs was very fond of afternoon tea. With Alfred in the manor it is definitely a Space for Afternoon Tea, although it also gets used for other meals occasionally and Alfred will do a lot of his meal planning/any other paperwork there, even though he technically has an office.
When Thomas and Martha were alive, there were actually full time staff living at the manor beyond Alfred and the staff quarters got used, and the “servant’s hall” actually got used as a staff dining room, but now this is where the family members tend to gather if there’s too many of them to just eat in the kitchen. (In my head, Wayne Manor during Thomas and Martha’s life is basically the Wayne Manor described by @unpretty who has written some of my favorite Batman fics ever.)
When Bruce was growing up, Thomas Wayne’s den was the “casual family living room” that every other sitting room in the manor was not, and after he died Bruce couldn’t bear to touch anything in it and avoided it unless he was doing some hardcore brooding. When he moved back/took in Dick, he converted one of the bedrooms to a tv room because he wanted a space that was casual and none of the other spaces felt like a tv belonged in them, but he still couldn’t go in his father’s den. As things have gotten better, and also as Tim and Damian’s relationship improved and Tim started coming around more, Bruce was finally ready to let this go and this became basically Tim’s workspace for whenever he’s at the manor. Bruce will work on stuff in there if Tim is in there, but he still doesn’t spend a lot of time in there on his own. (Ok, this was a little bit inspired by a Rebirth comic, don’t know which one, not gonna find it, I’m sure the rest of it was silly). Bruce tends to use the study downstairs if he’s working on W.E. work or other stuff like that. Jason and Dick’s go to places for any type of homework (when they were living at the manor) or any other work they might have to sit down and do are one of the libraries or wherever Bruce or Alfred are, depending on their mood and what they’re working on, and how long they’ve been living at the manor.
I’m pretty sure Martha Wayne painting/drawing is canon, but I don’t remember the comic it was referenced in. Anyway, she turned what was being used as a sunroom into her art studio because it had the best light. With Damian in the manor it’s slowly being reclaimed by art supplies.
There are definitely rolling mirrors and freestanding barres in the ballroom that Cass uses for dance practice.
Not pictured: the massive garage, stables, tennis courts, basketball courts, gardens, pond, and basically everything on the grounds.
If anyone is curious about what comic panels I referenced (or ignored), or what real world rooms/houses inspired specific parts, shoot me a message! Also, feel free to use this in art/fics/whatever if you want a reference!

Fenris/f!Hawke fluffy smut: Home
Inspired by the hilarious fact that Merrill makes the same comments when she’s in Fenris’s house as she does Darktown and other yucky places. In other words, Fenris lives like a disgusting bachelor in that squatter’s den of his, and I love him.
For @dadrunkwriting Friday. NSFW smut. Read on AO3 instead:
tinyurl.com/fenhawke15
***********
Hawke stepped through the door to Fenris’s bedroom. “Hello, handsome,” she chirped, then began to tip-toe a convoluted path across the floor.
Fenris glanced up from his book. He watched with growing amusement as she hopped over a broken jug, then skirted her way around a large splatter of mud before almost tripping over a dusty pile of parchment topped with a rusted gauntlet.
“Hawke, what are you doing?” he said flatly.
She finally teetered over to his bed, then hopped onto the mattress with a sigh of relief. “I just bathed before I came,” she explained. “I didn’t want to get my feet dirty on your disgusting floor.” She grinned teasingly at him as she stretched out on the bed.
He grunted. “No one is stopping you from keeping your boots on until you reach the bed. You sound like Merrill,” he complained, then adopted a high-pitched simpering voice. “‘I think I stepped in something.’”
Hawke gaped at him. “Andraste’s flaming knickers. Was that an impression of Merrill?”
Fenris scowled and lifted his book. “Unfortunately, yes.”
Hawke threw her head back and cackled raucously. “You never do impressions! I must be a bad influence on you.”
“Even more unfortunately, yes,” he said. He set his book aside and pinched her waist.
She squealed and batted at his hands, but Fenris continued to creep his fingers across her ribs and waist until she was breathless with laughter. “Stop, stop!” she cried. “I take it back, I have no complaints! Your floor is wonderful and lovely and not at all absolutely fucking filthy.”
Fenris stopped tickling her, then lounged on his back again and tucked one arm behind his head. “Good. I will gladly accept the lack of complaints.”
She continued to wheeze with residual giggles as she snuggled up to his side, and Fenris dropped a kiss on the top of her head. Then he sighed. “You aren’t wrong. This mansion is disgusting.”
She chuckled softly and slid her arm around his waist. “You could clean it, you know. I could give Orana a bonus to come round and give you a hand.”
“That will not be necessary,” he murmured. “It’s been filthy for years. It serves its purpose without being clean.”
Hawke huffed in amusement. “You’re a strange man, Fenris. Clinging to your bachelor ways, I suppose.”
He smirked slightly, but didn’t reply. In truth, Fenris had considered cleaning the mansion many a time, but he could never quite bring himself to do it. Every time he thought about wiping the shelves or cleaning the floors, all he could remember was that this was the former house of a Tevinter merchant, and a former haven where Danarius had taken refuge. The thought of cleaning a house where Danarius had once resided, even if only briefly…
Never, he thought viciously, as he always did. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply, then exhaled and enjoyed the feel of Hawke’s body pressed against his side.
A moment later, Hawke spoke again. “There’s another solution. You could just move in with me.”
Fenris opened his eyes to find her looking hopefully up at him. Before he could speak, she propped herself up on one elbow. “Hear me out. We spend every night together anyway, so why not just make it official? My mansion is more than big enough for another person. And it feels empty anyway whenever you’re not there. There’s lots of room for your weapons, we can get rid of that statue over the fireplace that you hate, get a new ugly statue instead…”
She was babbling. Fenris watched affectionately as her cheeks started turning pink. “I know it’ll be a hardship to move out of this charming dump,” she teased. “You’re attached to it, I understand, but-”
He stroked her arm soothingly. “I’m not,” he corrected. “I have no particular fondness for this place.” Indeed, this squatter’s mansion had always just been a place to sleep and store his gear. The Tevinter taint of this house had prevented him from ever really feeling at home here.
Hawke perked up. “So if you don’t care about this place, move in with me! Let’s do it now! It won’t take more than a couple of trips to bring your things over. Sandal will be delighted, he can start enchanting all your stuff. He’s enchanted most of mine already.” She pushed herself upright and slid her legs over the edge of the bed, as though she was actually preparing to move his things right now in the dead of night.
He sat up and grabbed her arm. “Hawke, wait. I… I don’t want it to be like this.”
She frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
He ran a hand through his hair. He’d known this moment was coming; she’d been dropping little hints here and there for a couple of weeks that she wanted him to move in. Some of his belongings had already begun their migration to her mansion, small things like comfy clothes and books and a comb, and it only made sense that Fenris himself would follow.
And of course he wanted to live with Hawke. It was inevitable that they would live together eventually. But despite how comfortable he felt in Hawke’s mansion, the fact remained that it was her home. She’d happily taken in Bodahn and Sandal and Orana already, and Fenris didn’t want to be yet another person living in her house that she needed to support.
“Your mansion… It is your mansion,” he said.
She raised one eyebrow and smirked. “Yes,” she drawled. “That is a fact.”
He pursed his lips, then continued to explain. “Before I came here, my life was spent living in someone else’s home. As a slave, I never…” He trailed off, then looked away. “Danarius’s home was never my home,” he said gruffly. “I lived under his roof. I ate and I slept at his whim, and he never let me forget it, even while he gloated that he would never let me leave.” Fenris breathed deeply to quell his anger before lifting his eyes to Hawke’s face again. “I won’t feel that way again. I can’t.”
“But it won’t be like that!” she said. She slid closer to him and stroked his thigh, her face creased with concern. “You won’t feel that way in my - in the mansion. You’ll be living with me, not under me. Well, I mean, you’ll be under me half the time, if you know what I mean.” She wiggled her eyebrows and smirked. “But it won’t be like-”
“I know,” Fenris interrupted. “I know it’s not the same. I just…” He took a deep breath, then finally said what he really wanted to say - and what he’d been thinking about for months, ever since they’d gotten back together.
He took her hands. “Hawke, I don’t want to live in your house. I want… I want to live in our house. I want something that we’ve bought together. I want to build a home together with you.”
A brilliant smile lifted her lips, and Fenris’s heart thumped with hope at the sheer joy in her face. She ducked her head bashfully before lifting her face and pushing her bangs back. “I hope you don’t mean literally,” she quipped. “Because I’ve got all the construction skills of a baby nug.”
Fenris gave her a chiding look. “You know what I mean.” He tucked an errant strand of her hair behind her ear. “I want to live with you,” he said softly. “Kaffas, Hawke, I want… I want that very much. But… I want to buy a home with you.” He swallowed hard; now this was the truly difficult part. “Hawke, would you… would you be willing to give up the Amell estate to move somewhere new with me? If you need time to think about it, I-”
“Of course,” she blurted. She straddled his lap and slid her arms around his neck. “Of course I will.”
Fenris’s regarded her with surprise. He’d expected at least a little resistance. “Just like that? I thought…”
Hawke shook her head. “It was my mother who wanted the estate,” she said. “I bought it for her. Restore the Amell name and all that. But I never cared about it, not really. I’m a Hawke,” she said simply. “I’m Rynne Hawke, not Rynne Amell. I don’t need that house to tell me who I am. Besides, it’s so bloody big. Gamlen is welcome to it if he wants. You and I can get something smaller. Sandal and Bodahn are leaving me soon enough anyway, so we won’t need as much room.”
Fenris frowned, distracted by this surprising news. She hadn’t told him that Bodahn and Sandal were leaving. “What? Why?”
“They got a better offer, working for Empress Celene or something,” Hawke said vaguely. “Can you imagine wanting to work for the most powerful woman in Orlais instead of little old me?” She smirked, but her eyes were downcast.
Fenris stroked her back. He knew that Bodahn and Sandal had never been just the household help to her. “I’m sorry, Hawke.”
She shrugged, then lifted her eyes back to his face. “Well, where one dwarf closes a door, a handsome broody elf opens a window. That’s a thing they say, right?”
He studied her smile and the sadness in her eyes. “Not that I have ever heard,” he said softly. “It sounds like the set-up for a poor joke. You should pass it on to Varric.”
She smiled more broadly, and Fenris was glad when the sadness waned from her face. “I will,” she said, then she tucked her head cozily against his neck and tucked her fists under her chin. “So, when can we start looking for a new house?”
He wrapped his arms more securely around her. “I need some time to gather coin,” he admitted. “A few more months, perhaps.” He’d continued doing mercenary and delivery jobs in his spare time and he’d sold most of his finest weapons, but much of his savings had been wasted on Varania.
“All right,” she murmured. “I can wait. You’re worth it, I suppose.” She poked him playfully in the belly.
He grunted, then squeezed her hard until she squeaked in amusement. They sat in a bubble of warm contentment for a while, her eyelashes fluttering against his neck with her every blink and her body warm in his embrace.
Then Fenris spoke again, unable to quash his lingering concerns. “You are certain you don’t mind giving up your mansion? It seems a big sacrifice.”
Hawke leaned away to look at him, and her face was serious as she stroked his chin. “I don’t care about the estate,” she said firmly. “Believe me, Fenris. I don’t care. Some things are more important than a big old house.”
He gazed into her brilliant bronze eyes, his heart swelling with gratitude and warmth and love - so much love, it felt like his ribs couldn’t contain it. He cupped her neck in his lyrium-lined hands and pressed his forehead to hers. “Hawke,” he rasped. “If I had a mansion to give you, I would. I… I would give you everything.”
She shook her head slightly. “You already have, you handsome fool. Don’t you know that by now?”
He closed his stinging eyes, breathing in the scent of her freshly-soaped skin as she stroked his neck with her thumbs. Then he tilted his head and kissed her.
Hawke slid her fingers into his hair as she returned his kiss, and Fenris clasped her close, grateful for her precious warmth and weight against his body. Her lips pulled gently at his own, nipping delicately at his lower lip, then her mouth trailed across his jaw to the base of his ear.
She gently licked his neck. A shiver of heat sparked to life in his belly, and Fenris inhaled and lifted his hips. Hawke’s fingers slipped beneath his shirt, her fingers trailing up his abs as her tongue trailed along the tendon in his neck, and moments later his tunic was on the floor, accompanied by Hawke’s loose linen tank top.
She dropped her mouth to his neck again, nipping lightly along the lyrium scars that led to his shoulder. Fenris stroked her bare back distractedly, then released a needy gasp as her hand burrowed into his trousers.
She stroked his swiftly-swelling cock, then pressed her raspberry-red lips to his ear. “You want to give me something? Give me this,” she whispered.
She ran her thumb around the head of his cock, and he nodded his head. “Gladly,” he groaned. A few frenzied moments later, they were both nude, and Hawke was straddling his lap again, and Fenris was gasping as she stroked the length of his cock with her palm.
She lowered her head toward the other side of his neck, but Fenris stopped her with a gentle hand on her jaw. He dropped his lips to her neck and flicked his tongue into the notch at the base of her throat, and Hawke leaned back into the support of his other arm as his lips and tongue drifted down her sternum and over her breast.
She squeezed his cock, and Fenris bit her nipple with a moan, and then her slick and silken heat was poised above him, taking him in, sliding onto the steely length of his cock inch by exquisite inch, and his groan of bliss poured across Hawke’s lips as she kissed him again.
She pressed down against his hips to take him deep, and their moans of pleasure melded together in an undeniable mix of lust and love. Fenris splayed his palms on her shoulder blades, supporting her as she lifted and lowered herself along the length of his shaft in a slow, smooth slide. He savoured her slick heat squeezing him from tip to base, and he breathed his pleasure against her breast, his tongue flicking over her nipple with every rise and fall of her hips. Then, when her riding began to grow more fast and frantic, Fenris slid his hand between their bodies and brushed his knuckles over the curls between her legs.
Instantly her breath caught in her chest. She slowed her pace to a near-stop, then braced her weight back on her hands. “Yes,” she breathed.
Fenris dropped his gaze between her legs. Gently he parted the curls that veiled her sex, then pressed the knuckle of his index finger against the swollen bud of her pleasure.
Hawke keened with want, then rolled her hips toward his hand. Fenris stared at her, eyes fixed on the undulating wave of her body as she rolled toward his knuckles and pressed her clit against his fingers with the exact rhythm and pressure that suited her best. He watched with rising eagerness as her beautiful face began to twist, lush lips dropping open, her belly going taut as the rolling of her hips grew jerky. When she drew a tremulous gasp of a breath, Fenris reached for her arm.
“F-Fenris,” she cried, and he pulled her shuddering back body toward him and thrust into her hard.
“Oh fuck,” she wailed, and then her mouth was crying out against his own, hands gripping his hair as he held her hips and fucked her fast and firm. The mattress springs groaned beneath them, and their bodies slapped together with a satisfying smack of skin-on-skin. Her breath was hot against his cheek, and his pleasure was gathering with every hard pump of his hips, and then - venhedis, then she was actively slamming her hips back down against him, and Fenris gasped with a growing delirious delight. Hawke’s breasts, her lips, the rapture in her face, the sweat that collected between their bodies they fucked: Fenris loved this, loved the messiness and the breathless frenzy and the way she came undone in his hands. He loved it all, but more than the sex, more than the surging rise of his climax and the way it shattered over him like a tingling wave pulsing through his limbs, he loved her.
They breathed together in the afterglow, her hands on his neck and her sweaty forehead pressed to his. Hawke’s eyes were closed, but Fenris’s eyes were open, taking in the shape of her lips and fan of her eyelashes, and he simply gazed at her until she opened her eyes and smiled.
He kissed her gently, and Hawke kissed him back. Someday soon, they would have a home to call their own, something that belonged to the two of them together. But here in Hawke’s arms, cocooned in the scent of their sex and the warmth of their mutual adoration, Fenris realized that it didn’t matter where they lived, whether it was a tent on the Wounded Coast or a shack in Lowtown or the biggest mansion in Kirkwall.
As long as he and Hawke were together, he would be home.

My Toxic Relationship and How I Learned To Love Myself
I remember the first time I met Louis.
It was a brisk September night, my wounds still fresh from the wear and tear of my most recent relationship, which had lasted only a month.
I was angry, traumatized at the idea that I was almost abandoned in a city that I knew nothing about...
I had made it home safely, as I knew my friend Adam would assure.
Still, I see him as a saint among men, and my only true friend aside from my own family. He offered to let me stay at his place, and then tried to comfort me when I declined; attempting convince me that I would be safe within the walls of my studio apartment.
I commended him for his chivalry, but i knew it was only a matter of time before my ex-lover came knocking on my door.
I didn’t feel safe, and needed to get out of the house that night. Adam had done enough for me, and asking him to do any more for me would have bordered taking advantage of him.
I turned on my white samsung tablet, and opened my chrome internet browser.
I scrolled through the various messages on my email account, and looked fondly upon one of the many new connections I had made.
Louis, a friend whom I had bonded with based on our mutual love of anime. We had been messaging back and forth as friends for a short time, and I found myself becoming enraptured in our ongoing conversations.
Initially, I was drawn to the innate intelligence he possessed, and that my ex severely lacked. He spoke eloquently and held sharp wit, along with a keen knowledge on a variety of subjects that had aroused my passions.
If anything, I assumed that one night of friendly banter and an anime binge could do no more harm than I had already experienced.
I called him, discussing the recent events that had taken place, and expressed the need for some friendly company.
He happily obliged, excited to meet his internet banter buddy for the first time.
I was picked up by his brother in law, and brought to a quaint little home that seemed to rest on the edge of both the good, and the bad sides of town. I nervously edged toward the door, and knocked on it.
After a few moments, the door had opened and I was greeted with a seemingly pleasant face, as well as a wafting wall of cigarette and pot smoke.
I instantly held back a gag, the awful stench permeating the walls of my nostrils and setting them aflame. I almost hesitated when entering the home, wondering if I should have taken Adam up on his offer after all...
Nonetheless I entered, peering at the greyish-green walls and the dartboard surrounded by endless wolf posters.
this was at best, a bachelor pad.
However, when looking closely at the damaged carpet and the frayed edges of plaster walls, it seemed to hold more resemblance to that of an opiate den.
I didn’t mention the smell or my discomfort, not wanting to offend my new friend. He had opened his home to me, and I wasn’t going to disrespect that. We started the night with a little anime named Mirai Nikki. I had never seen it, and had expressed an interest in sharing our favorite anime with each other.
It was slow to start, and I wasn’t all that interested by it.
He had figured that I was emotionally exhausted, and needed the time to mentally recuperate. I agreed with him, and I figured that some rest away from my prior situation might help my mood bounce back.
He paused it as we continued to talk.
We wrapped his arm around my shoulder, and I welcomed it.
Then, he made the first move, and sparks began to fly.
My head tilted back as he began trailing his lips up my side and neck.
I didn’t want to rush into anything, but my body had been so deprived of affection that I allowed it to continue... I had never met a man who could do with his hands what this man did.
Never before had anyone managed to get me off with just their hands and lips.
I felt I had been spoiled like a sexual goddess, being worshiped, and asked for nothing in return...
I slept on his couch that night, and many nights in his room after that.
He took me to taco-bell for breakfast the next morning, the place that would become my future workplace.
He told me then that he had fallen for me, and that he would pursue me from this moment on. The steering wheel was in my hands, and it was up to me to decide what direction this relationship took.
I hesitated for a moment.
I had just gotten out of a negative relationship, as short as it was. Though I did not mourn the person, my emotions were still in a vulnerable spot.
Louis had wanted me to stay with him, and his best friend was staying at his home as well. My intuition told me that this was a potentially bad idea, so I held my decision off.
I did however, agree to stay for a little longer. After all, I was still enjoying the firey company of my new ‘friend with benefits’.
A few days had passed, and I had experienced a passion that I did not know I had possessed.
He couldn’t keep his hands off of me, and I was lost into his charms like an endless maze... The lust had become an intense haze that clouded my judgement.
The pungent smells of the household began to fade into the background, and I began to notice a pleasant scent drifting off of my sexual partner.
It became apparent that I could not keep my thoughts away from him, and that the longer I waited, the deeper I was falling into his clever spell...
I found myself thinking: “Why aren’t we dating? Wouldn’t it just be better that way?”
So on September 7th of 2017, I accepted his request and we began our journey as lovers.
I had been following a spiritual path for some time then, and all of my experiences had led me to the most decadent of life lessons. All of my struggles and toils had not gone in vain, and I looked upon our relationship with fervent idolization.
This was the love I had been searching for, the realization I had been waiting for, and a seeming end to all of my struggles.
I dressed in my most lavish clothing, tending to my lover’s every possible need, as he tended to mind.
I remember my own heavy eyes come to life as I was ravished by his kisses every morning, the endearing moments of breakfast in bed, cuddling, and skyrim binges. The way he carried me through fields of goat’s heads, because the only shoes I owned at the time were these flimsy cloth sandals that had been worn past their time...
I was in a state of bliss, wanting to take care of his every need.
Surprising him with a clean house after work, the smells of pot pourri incense, and hours of sexual pleasure...
I wanted so desperately to be his confidant. For him to feel comfortable to tell me anything.
He had told me the woes of his childhood, and of the past relationships that had torn him to pieces.
...All of that abuse that he had endured. How, I wondered, could anyone put a kind loving man like this through such heinous tortures...?
I was honored that he had been willing to share such a dark and personal story. I vowed to never make him feel so miserable, and to give him what no one person had ever given to him before...
I truly wanted this.
As the year began to head off into winter, my seasonal depression began to take hold. I was still able to carry out most of my self induced tasks, but not to the level that I once had.
It had been around a month, and I figured that it was about time that I obtained some form of employment.
I was determined to help in any way that I could, desiring to build this run down rental into a true home for the lot of us.
Tanner, my roommate and the dear friend of Louis, was skeptical of my plans as well as my intentions.
I felt my guilt beginning to rise. I liked tanner, and I didn’t want to disappoint him. My lover thought very highly of him, and I felt the first of many pressures begin to weigh on my mind...
Then, enters the step-brother.
Dakota, a stout man with brown and beady eyes had been down on his luck for quite some time. He had nowhere to go, and no one else to turn to for a place to stay.
He had been working at taco-bell on night shift for the last year, and had not been able to land an apartment due to his lack of an address.
We had all felt sorry for him, and wanted to help him get back onto his feet, hopefully able to lead a better life.
He was very grateful for our hospitality, and had an amazing opportunity that he was lining up for me...
He would help me get a foot in the door at his place of work, so long as I lived up to the reputation that he would build for me.
I took him up on this offer, and to be honest it is one of the few investments that has followed me through to the end and as I’ve moved forward.
As I saw how easily this job and it’s benefits had flowed into my life, I was at an all time high. I found that I loved the workload that this fast food restaurant had to offer, as it enabled me to get out there ant talk to people, alleviating the brunt of my winter blues.
I was sure now that I had overcome our main obstacle, and that my problems would soon become a thing of the past...
How wrong I would realize I was.
As the weeks passed, our passion began to burn hotter and hotter, transforming into explosive anger.
The man who I thought was my sweet and gentle lover became a stony wall of hot and painful flames...
... I remember the first time I heard him scream.
I had taken up smoking marijuana with Louis and our expanding group of friends, finding the social outlet pleasurable in most instances. I enjoyed the company of both Tanner and Dakota, as well as Chloe, our most recent friend.
Louis had gone to bed early that night, and my mind was filled with stress.
My thoughts had begun to resemble that of a housewife’s.
“Where were his work shoes?” I wondered. “And where are his socks and shirt?” He had been quick to anger as of late, and I had done nothing but blame myself.
I thought that the more I did, the better things would get. That somehow all of my struggles would be seen all at once and my appreciative, sweet, and gentle lover would return once again.
Our friends had looked at this display of mothering affection, and waved a dismissive hand.
“Just smoke with us!” they said. “Worry about that shit later, and relax...”
I took my first ever hit off of a bong, feeling the heavy and burning smoke filling my lungs like a liquid...
As I began to exhale, I felt the worst high of my life overtake my body and mind.
I was an inexperienced smoker, and had only been smoking with Louis.
I didn’t know what was happening, and fled to the only source of support I had at the moment, almost sure that I would be met with comfort and love.
I held onto him and cried, trying to calm myself down, but failing miserably.
He woke up, enraged by this display.
“It’s all in your head!!” he screamed. “Why can’t I get any fucking sleep!?”
I broke into violent sobs, unable to regain my composure.
I attempted to explain myself, which only resulted in more of the same kind of screaming.
He ended up staying over at a friends place, loudly announcing about how he was so sick of all of the shit that he had just had to put up with.
I fell asleep alone and crying, questioning my life with him and whether or not it was worth it to put up with such anger and abuse...
bitter and hurtful feelings had followed me into the next morning, and I had felt that all of my previous trust for him had dissipated, like the smoke of last night had dissipated into the walls.
I was so sure of myself then. I deserved better, and I was going to leave him and start a better journey with more self love and kindness.
So I told him...
He burst into tears, and I instantly felt this heavy guilt wash over me.
He had explained that these thoughts had never crossed his mind, and that he knew he had issues but that he loved me and needed someone who would be patient, sticking through him thick and thin.
My own sense of chivalry kicked in and I felt ashamed that I had considered giving up on him.
I began to cry, and showered him in hugs and endless apologies.
I agreed to stay, and endure what I had while hoping it would change; and though I hadn’t actually left him, I could still feel the strain and tension slowly building in our relationship.
There would be weeks where everything began to float by as it used to, and the eggshells that had become my world had seemed to have lifted from my life.
Then, a small little misstep of my human nature, and all of my trust for him had yet again hit rock bottom as he demeaned and berated me.
I was beginning to see these moments as more of my failures than his...
I confided in Dakota, wondering if possibly his familial connections to Louis gave him insight that I simply didn’t have yet.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, these words were an intentional wrench that had been thrown in between the relationship to manipulate us both.
Still, his words now more than ever ring true to me.
“You deserve better.” He had said.
“You are always taking care of him, and what does he really do besides work? Nothing. He’s forcing you to clean his mess with a broken sink... You deserve better.”
(Oh, and did I mention I did dishes out of a bucket for a sink? A fucking bucket.)
I thought about this and became enraged.
How dare he take advantage of my hard work?
No longer was my body ravished, but my hard earned paycheck ravaged.
There were dark circles forming under my eyes, and the stress of this entire ordeal had me breaking out into bouts of painful acne.
Our fights were getting nothing but worse, and I was determined to put an end to it.
I became calm.
I told him exactly why I was leaving him this time. His anger was toxic to me, and my emotional well being was deteriorating by the day now.
He needed to know that this was not okay.
He begged me not to leave, dropping on his knees and holding my hands close to his chest...
This made my very soul ache for him, so I pulled away. I needed to be strong for this.
I tried to walk away, and into the room to gather my things.
He followed me, and began to yell.
He was getting far too close to my face for comfort, and I was afraid.
I began to sob as I shivered, covering my ears; this unbearable pain filling my chest with anxiety and suffering.
It seemed to never end, until my father pulled into the driveway.
I quickly grabbed what I needed and fled the household, sobbing uncontrollably.
As I tried to rest in the large and empty bed of my little step-brother’s room, my heart began to weigh one thousand pounds in my chest, and the unbearable sobbing continued.
My every dream was of him, and the nonstop feelings of regret flooded my mind.
“It must have been my fault somehow.” I felt, my thoughts reverting to the same old patterns that had gotten me stuck in that awful place...
These feelings seemed to haunt my every hour, following me to a miserable day at work the next day. I was forced to walk past his house, and feel the regret of what I had done.
I had left my long term relationship, and I was miserable for it.
My Mother had shown up to my work that day, and I remember beginning to cry again, so guilty of what I had done.
My mother suggested that I take my break, and try to have a one on one talk with him to see if we couldn’t work things out.
I wandered over to his house, taking her advice.
I felt this heavy awkwardness as I entered the house again...
Louis was despondent, and had fallen into a deep state of depression.
I had asked him if he could forgive me for leaving him, and if he was still willing to work things out.
He sat up.
As we began to talk, he made a list of all of the changes that needed to be made. I needed to work harder, put in way more emotional effort and most importantly, never EVER even threaten or think about leaving him again.
If i did it again it was over. enough said.
And once again our days became filled with light and happiness, the work load of before seeming to come more easily to me again... my life was again filled with cuddles, kisses, and love sick promises...
...This was the last time.
A slow and sickening descent began to tear apart our already failing relationship.
This time, the cuddles slowly disappeared.
My mornings were spent alone, and our kisses that we had shared were waning into oblivion; I had a hard time recalling the last time that we had made love.
He began to spend more and more time away from me, and my intuition suddenly began reeling as my mind’s eye filled with images of secret escapades and dealings of darkness.
I tried to ignore it, paranoia slowly filling my days.
I needed to vent more and more to keep my emotions at bay, trying to prevent the inevitable end.
...The relationship died on April 30, 2018.
He had wandered into the room and began to cuddle me. I was sad, and unresponsive.
I looked around the room that was once my home, and felt the fog lift from over my heart...
What was I doing in this god godforsaken place?
My body was sore, and the bed was bare, as was my heart.
I wasn’t planning on leaving, but rather I wanted him to see how unhappy I was.
Maybe if he saw how unhappy I was, he would ask me what was wrong, and we could finally get around to fixing things...
That’s why I was surprised when he left me.
He had tried to let me feel as though he was leaving me to give me a better life, and told me that he could not change himself anymore for me.
He couldn’t be the one to break my heart...
At first? I was devastated.
This person who I had poured my entire heart and soul into, left me when it was most convenient for him.
I felt the ultimate rejection when I realized he had replaced me.
He had replaced me with a woman who he knew had tormented me at my old workplace.
I knew that I should have followed my intuition, and I felt my heart begin to harden and become bitter.
I was humiliated, hurt, and ashamed that I had fallen for his ever whimsical lies...
The first few days of this separation was pure and utter agony.
I did not know where to move forward, and had felt that I had lost a part of myself that I wondered if i would ever get back.
I was lonely and cold, thinking and analyzing, and analyzing and thinking again, replaying the horrible scenes in my head...
...Wondering where I went wrong.
But, as I analyzed the pieces of this shattered story, I realized something.
I was stronger.
No, I am stronger.
I thought about it, and I know exactly where I went wrong. I realized that I had never loved myself more until that moment, and that was the moment I finally let him go.
I should have never allowed myself to be abused that way.
I should not have made him my everything; and though I do have some regrets for letting myself be swept into this twisted story, I am more wise for my travels.
I walked a dark and lonely path, and I now choose to never again allow someone to be a priority over myself.
it is now May 8th, 2018, and I have already found a new home for myself.
I am far better off already, and for the first time in a long time, I am at peace again.
Salutations, and safe travels:

Disney+ UK Star Launch: Complete List of New TV Shows and Films
https://ift.tt/2P7STsN
We came for The Mandalorian, stuck around for WandaVision, and, as we wait for The Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki to arrive, there’s now a huge pile of new catalogue additions to work through, courtesy of Disney Plus’ Star brand.
Star launched on the Disney Plus streaming service in territories outside of the US (where Disney already has a home for adult drama in Hulu) on the 23rd of February. It’s added over 75 TV shows and 280 feature films here in the UK, including the entirety of Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Glee, Prison Break, Sons of Anarchy and Scrubs as well as cult favourites Firefly, Flashforward, Terriers and more. There are also some UK debuts in the form of the Star Originals listed below.
Film-wise, there’s ample reason to go back to the 90s in the form of Arachnophobia, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Con Air and a host of others, plus…well, it’s almost 300 films. Chances are you’ll find something to tickle your fancy. Households with kids should know there are new parental controls to set too, ensuring that nobody gets any unwelcome surprises.
Here’s the complete list of titles so far:
Star Originals
Big Sky
From Mr TV himself, David E. Kelley (Doogie Howser, Chicago Hope, Ally Mcbeal, Big Little Lies) comes a nine-part crime thriller starring Ryan Philippe and Vikings‘ Katheryn Winnick. Based on the 2013 novel The Highway by C.J. Box, Big Sky is the story of a series of missing girls and a private detective/cop trio with a messy personal history who team up to find them. It aired on ABC in the US last winter.
Helstrom
There’s very little fanfare for this comic book show‘s UK debut, which met with mostly negative reviews on release and was cancelled after 10 episodes, but Marvel completists will want to take a look. Tom Austen and Sidney Lemmon play the Helstrom siblings Daimon and Satana, the children of serial killers who hunt down the worst of humanity.
Love, Victor
Another Hulu original making its UK debut, this teen drama spins off from celebrated gay teen 2018 film Love, Simon. It’s narrated by Nick Robinson, who played Simon in the original film, and follows the story of a Puerto-Rican/Colombian-American teen living in Atalanta. Reviews for the 10-part first season were strong and it’s been renewed for a second.
Solar Opposites
Rick and Morty‘s Justin Roiland and Star Trek: Lower Decks‘s Mike McMahan are the creators of this adult animated comedy series about a family of aliens (pictured above) forced to seek refuge in middle America. Season one was enthusiastically received, and a second run is due to air in the US in March. Read plenty more about it here.

Fairytales on Stamps
Once upon a time when we were young, we loved to listen to bedtime stories. Our days were filled with imaginary castles and with lovely fairytales, with princes and princesses of the far-off lands, with animals that talked and with trees that walked! Such a distinct memory it seems to be. The stories that made and shaped our childhood seemed to be lost now. But what if we tell you that you can fall back in time and relive those lost moments again? Yes, it’s true. Many countries have issued our favourite fairytales on stamps! You can now collect them and get lost in those far away fairy lands again…
The stories are those which we have heard and read so many times, yet each time we enjoy them anew. But who wrote them? Who compiled our fairy tales?
In the early 17th century in the glittering city of Paris in the kingdom of France, there was a man named Charles Perrault. He was a French author who laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tales! A member of the Académie Française and a leading intellectual of his time, his dialogue Parallèles des anciens et des modernes (Parallels between the Ancients and the Moderns), served as a forerunner for the Age of Enlightenment in Europe, an era that was not always receptive to tales of magic and fantasy.
But he was a lawyer before he turned to writing. After completing his studies, he began a career in government service. Under Jean Baptist Colbert, the Finance Minister of King Louis XIV, he served as secretary of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. When he lost he job as a secretary in 1695 he decided to dedicate himself to his family. In 1697 he published a book, Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals (Hisoires et Contes du Temps Passé), which is sometimes better known by its subtitle: Tales of Mother Goose (Les contes de ma Mère l’Oie). The book was a compilation of fairy tales, some of them being derived from pre-existing folk tales or old oral folklore.
Now, unfortunately, there are no stamps issued to honour Charles Perrault. But the fairytales that he wrote himself (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Blue Beard, Ricky of the Tuft and Little Thumb) are featured on stamps of many countries.
The first stamp depicts a fairytale we all know by heart. It’s the tale of a young girl who is harassed by her step-mother and sisters, forbidden to attend a royal ball, but finds help and support in her humble friends and godmother, meets the Prince at the ball, forgets her glass slipper behind and ends up marrying the Prince. This story is one of the most famous for adaptations, with the 1950 animated movie from Disney studios being the most popular. This stamp from Monaco depicts “Cinderella” in ragged clothes, fairy godmother, the pumpkin carriage and the glass slippers.
The next one is of a story that goes by the name “Puss in the Boots”. The tale tells about a cat which, with the help of magic boots, helps his poor master to marry the daughter of a king by making the king believe that his master is rich and wealthy.
Next stamp depicts the story of the Sleeping Beauty, a tale that has also been adapted by Disney studios in 1959. It is interesting to note that there is a difference between the version written by Charles Perrault and the tale related in Disney’s movie: in Perrault’s tale the sleeping beauty wakes up by herself whereas in Disney’s movie it is the kiss from the prince that wakes her up.
The former seems to be more fit. Doesn’t it?
The next stamp is of the Little Red Riding Hood. In Perrault’s version the little girl is eaten by the wolf and or at times often hinted that the “wolf” was a wicked man who preyed on young girls who wandered the woods alone. The versions that we have read are thankfully lesser gruesome and in the “Red” is saved from the wolf by the woodcutters.
This stamp tells the horrible story of a wife who discovers that her husband, Blue beard, has killed all his previous spouses and kept their bodies in a closet! Blue beard is a wealthy violent man in the habit of murdering his wives. But the wife he acquired recently is a clever and a brave girl of sixteen years who devises a plan to escape and expose her cruel murderous husband.
Because of the way he has treated his wives, King Henry VIII is sometimes referred as the English blue beard!
The stamp depicted next tells the story of ‘Little Thumb’ who rescues his brothers from the fate of being eaten by an Ogre. The story goes like this: a couple of faggot-makers have seven children, al boys, and they are so poor that they cannot feed them anymore. So one day they decide to abandon them in a forest. The tale then tells the story of the youngest boy called “little thumb”- because of his small size – who helps rescues his brothers from a terrible death by an Ogre.
The next is a tale which is a bit lesser known. This story is known as “The Fairies” or as “Diamonds and Toads”.
The story is about two sisters: one is a nice girl and the other a nasty. The nasty one is, as often depicted in fairy tales, the preferred daughter of her mother and the nice is left to do all the household work. One day the nice daughter goes to the well to draw some water. There she meets a fairy who asks her for some water. In exchange the fairy offers to the young girl a gift: each time she would say a word, diamonds and precious jewels would come out of her mouth. When her mother sees what happened to her daughter, she sends her other favourite one to the well so that she gets the same gift! But as the other daughter is a nasty one, she orders the fairy to fetch the water herself. When asked for a gift, the fairy obliges. She grants her a boon with a twist: each time the girl would say a word, a toad or a serpent would come out of her mouth! Seeing that, the mother gets furious and asks the nice girl to leave their home, putting all the responsibility of what happened on her shoulders. Fleeing from home, the young girl meets a prince who is seduced by her gift and he takes her to his castle to marry her.
The fourth stamp depicted here is the tale called as “Donkey skin” (Peau d’âne). The story is of a king who, after the death of his very beautiful wife that he loved more than anything else, is looking for a beautiful bride. Before dying his wife made him promise that he would not marry another woman who is less beautiful than herself. Pushed by his people he tries to find another woman that he could marry but he hardly finds anyone as pretty as his former wife. Except for his daughter! To escape from this unnatural marriage she flees from her home hiding under a donkey skin. She then takes shelter on a farm where she lives, always wearing the skin to hide her beauty.
Sometime later a prince of the area starts searching for a wife. In order to decide who will marry him, he triggers a competition, asking all the young girls of the area to cook him a cake: he would marry the girl who has made the best cake. In one cake he finds a nice ring, which has been lost by the girl who has cooked it. The prince starts searching for the girl who has the fingers delicate enough to wear this beautiful tiny ring. He finally finds out that the ring fits perfectly on the fingers of Donkey skin. She then reveals her beauty and they get married!
Apart from the fairytales that were compiled by Charles Perrault and the Grimm Brothers, there are a lot many folklores that were famous like the “1001 Arabian Nights” and our very own Panchatantra and Jataka stories. Now let’s see a few other stories on stamps.
The first stamp depicted here portrays the hero of The Thousand and One Nights who recounts his adventures on seven voyages! Have you guessed who he is?
Yes, he’s Sindabad the Sailor!
A fictional sailor and the hero of a story-cycle of Middle Eastern origin, he is described as living in Baghdad, during the Abbasid Caliphate. During his voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, he has fantastic adventures going to magical places, meeting monsters, and encountering supernatural phenomena.
The magic doesn’t stop here. Were you ever blown over by the blue giant Genie that helped Aladdin out of tight spots and granted him three wishes? Don’t we too wish to find such magical oil lamps!! The next stamp features Aladdin and the Magical Lamp. Well but the genie depicted here is not as cute and amicable as the one we are used to seeing the Disney Movies.
This legendary Flying Carpet, depicted on the next stamp, is an integral part of Oriental stories. The carpet appears in ancient Jewish texts, the Arabian One Thousand and One Nights, and most recently in Disney’s Aladdin. One of the stories in the One Thousand and One Nights relates how Prince Husain, the eldest son of Sultan of the Indies, travels to Bisnagar (Vijayanagara) in India and buys a magic carpet. There are many versions of this story as this flying magic carpet features in many of the eastern country folklore.
“Open Sesame”!
The next stamp features Ali Baba and 40 thieves, one of the most familiar of the “Arabian Nights” tales, that has been widely retold and performed in many media, especially for children, where the more violent aspects of the story are often suppressed. In the story, Ali Baba is a poor woodcutter who discovers the secret of a thieves’ den, entered with the phrase “Open Sesame”. The thieves learn this and try to kill Ali Baba, but Ali Baba’s faithful slave-girl foils their plots. Ali Baba gives his son to her in marriage and keeps the secret of the treasure.
The last stamp features a tale famously called as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. This is not a story from the Arabian Nights. Written by Robert Southey, this tale has two versions: the older one is called as “The Story of the Three Bears” where a badly-behaved old woman enters the forest home of three bachelor bears whilst they are away. She sits in their chairs, eats some of their porridge, and sleeps in one of their beds. When the bears return and discover her, she starts up, jumps from the window, and is never seen again. The other major version brings Goldilocks to the tale (replacing the old woman), and an even later version retained Goldilocks but has the three bachelor bears transformed into Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear.
Isn’t it interesting to relive these fairytales through stamps? It’s like finding a missing piece of our childhood. Well…stay tuned we will back with other fairytales and Panchatantra stories on stamps.
Till then hope you live happily ever after…
