Barrington Hall
Hi guys!!
I'm sharing Barrington Hall. This is the 21st building for my English Collection and inaugurating the red brick collection.
I decorated most of the house ground floor, for reference.
History of the house: 
The Barrington family, long-established in Essex since the Conquest, initially resided at Old Barrington Hall. This estate, shown on a 1624 map, included substantial structures, orchards, fish ponds, and brickyards. However, in 1564, they moved to the Priory at Hatfield Broad Oak, signaling their ascent as country gentry. Throughout the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the family engaged in legal disputes over rights to Hatfield Forest with the Rich family, eventually securing a portion of the forest.
Sir Francis Barrington played a significant role in government, receiving a baronetcy in 1622. The family also had investments in New England and Ireland during this period. Despite their growing wealth, the Priory required repairs by 1700 and was demolished, causing the Barringtons to relocate to Great Waltham. The family seat at Hatfield Broad Oak was eventually rebuilt in the 1730s by John Shales Barrington, although he left it unfinished, leading to his reclusive life.
In the 19th century, George Alan Clayton Lowndes acquired the estate and made extensive neo-Jacobean renovations to the house and gardens, which were lauded in contemporary publications. After multiple ownership changes, including the purchase by A.H. Gosling in 1907, the property was later sold to the British Livestock Company and is now owned by CPL Aromas plc. The original parkland has been divided, with only 12 hectares surrounding the house remaining as part of the current estate. The landscape includes notable trees such as ancient oaks, as well as remnants of historic avenues and garden features.

Haunted Borley Rectory
People have been fascinated and perplexed by the claim that Borley Rectory is "the most haunted house in England" for decades. Reverend Henry Dawson Ellis Bull constructed this rectory in the Gothic style in 1862 and located it in the remote community of Borley, Essex, which became notorious for its purported paranormal activity. There is a complicated mixture of historical events, eyewitness testimonies, and sensationalized legends that have led to the legendary status of Borley Rectory as a place of hauntings. The location known as Borley Rectory has been the subject of these stories. Beginning in the latter half of the 19th century, the Bull family, who had resided there up until the year 1892, provided the first detailed accounts of the eerie story. They described a number of unexplained incidents, including ghostly apparitions, disembodied voices, and footsteps that seemed to echo through the corridors under mysterious circumstances. The story of the nun's apparition has endured and continues to enthrall people. According to local folklore, she became involved in a sorrowful romantic relationship with a monk from a nearby monastery. The monk's execution and the nun's rumored burial alive within the monastery walls marked the tragic end to their illicit love affair. Her ghost is believed to roam the grounds of Borley Rectory, searching for the person she lost her love to forever.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the paranormal activity that occurred at Borley Rectory garnered a great deal of attention. Harry Price, a renowned paranormal investigator, played a significant role in this investigation. Price's study at the rectory involved numerous visits and extensive documentation of his discoveries. He then published these findings in publications that caught the imagination of the general audience. He described a variety of unsettling occurrences in his investigations, including the appearance of ghostly figures, objects moving on their own, and mysterious messages allegedly painted on the walls by spirit hands. The dramatic reports firmly established Borley Rectory's reputation as a haunted spot. On the other hand, critics have consistently cast doubt on the veracity of these assertions over the course of time. There are many who believe that a significant number of the tales were either grossly inflated or completely made up. Some people attribute the phenomenon to natural causes like the ancient structure's creaking and settling, or the activity of animals like mice or rats. On the other hand, not everyone agrees with this theory. Several inhabitants and guests of the rectory have publicly asserted that the events in question are hoaxes or deliberate fabrications, further complicating the tale. As an illustration, it has been proposed that some of the purportedly supernatural occurrences were manufactured for the purpose of gaining attention or financial advantage. Borley Rectory continues to be a legendary location, despite the widespread doubt. This ensures that Borley Rectory will maintain its place in the canon of paranormal legend due to the enduring fascination with the unexplained, coupled with the mysterious and tragic aspects of the stories. Fire destroyed the rectory itself in 1939, a dramatic event that some felt marked the culmination of the building's haunted history. Even in ruins, the stories of hauntings continue to pique people's interest and provoke speculation.

The halls of Xavier Keep have never seemed more foreboding, the sound of his footsteps overloud as he crosses the threshold into the guest wing. No one questions his presence at this late hour; no doubt the guards and the servants have been instructed by his stepfather to let Charles pass by unchallenged. Of course, he still has to get past the King’s guards in order to see the King, and he can’t help but hope rather desperately that he’ll be turned away at the door.
His heart sinks when he sees Captain Howlett at the end of the hall, speaking to the guards stationed outside the guest quarters. Their friendship means that Logan will allow Charles through without question, and his loyalty to the Crown Prince – and by extension to Charles – is enough to ensure his discretion. It means that Charles will ask to see the King and Logan will permit it, and he will have no good excuse for Kurt as to why he fails at the task he’s been given.
“My Lord, is everything alright?���
Behind him, Moira has also come to a stop, and is waiting patiently for Charles to continue on. It’s slightly less daunting with her unfailing support and steady presence, and yet it still feels as though he’s treading through deep water, every step heavier as he nears his destination. He does not know what she’d say if she knew Charles’ plan, though likely, she's smart enough to have already come to the right conclusion.
“Please, Kurt. You can’t ask this of me.”
His stepfather sighs, but his face is resolute and his voice does not waver. “Your father’s title is at risk until you have produced an alpha heir, Charles. The Chancellor has been whispering in the King’s ear, trying to convince him to take your family’s inheritance and bestow it upon another noble house. My own position gives me little leverage to advocate on your behalf…you must be the one to do this and secure His Majesty’s favor.”
“But…must it be this? Why not an arranged marriage with another House? Or maybe Erik—”
Kurt scoffs. “Your friend is interested only in galivanting around and playing at war, my boy. Has he ever expressed the desire to marry you? Any intent at all to initiate a formal courtship? No, we cannot count on the Crown Prince’s capricious nature, for time is running short.”
It hurts, because he cannot counter his stepfather’s words, and Erik has indeed never spoken to Charles of love or of a lasting bond beyond friendship. He is also well aware that the choices of a strategic marriage are few and far between – Scott Summers is no longer an option, with his recent betrothal to Jean, and the Greys’ other children are far too young. A marriage to House Essex or House Shaw is highly unpalatable, particularly with the latter’s machinations against the Xaviers and Markos at Court. And – even if it feels abhorrent, and against his very nature - if he must marry for power and not for love, then who better than the King to secure the Xaviers’ future?
Pulling his cape more securely around him, Charles takes a deep breath and nods. “Everything’s fine, Moira. Let’s deliver this wine to the King, shall we?”

More than ever, we must remember our historic bond with Poland and Ukraine

Written in pencil on the wall of the candle store at Audley End House in Essex is a list. In the shadows for decades, this unassuming scrawl has now been deciphered as the names of six Polish men. Research by English Heritage – who now take care of the House – has revealed who they were and why they were there.
They include a 43-year-old father of two, fluent in five languages; a highly strung army officer who loved horse riding; a teacher; a film star and two young men in their early twenties.
These men were members of a select group, trained to drop behind enemy lines into occupied Poland to fight for their homeland during WW2. For it was eighty years ago today, on 1 May 1942, that Audley End became the principal training school for the Cichociemni, the Polish section of the Special Operations Executive.
Their fascinating story of heroism and sacrifice resonates with the current terrible events in Ukraine. Changing political boundaries and the movement of peoples within Eastern Europe over the centuries mean there are deep connections between Poles and Ukrainians. Of the six men whose names are scratched in pencil onto the wall in the candle store, one, Karol Dorwski, came from Lviv and another, Franciszek Socha, studied at university there. The warm welcome Ukrainian refugees have received in Poland today speaks to these historic connections and also reflects the Poles’ collective memory of destruction and displacement during WW2.
Yet their ties also extend to Britain. Audley End was known as Special Training School (STS) 43. Those who trained there were elite special operations paratroopers. They arrived having already completed paramilitary and fitness courses in the Scottish Highlands and parachute training in Cheshire. Most had also done specialist courses in sabotage, weapons handling and signalling.
At Audley End they took two courses: Underground Warfare and Briefing. The former tested their physical fitness, mastery of weapons, use of explosives and demolitions, and skills in communications and irregular warfare. The house’s extensive grounds and relative privacy made it the ideal site for such exploits. The Briefing course occupied the last six weeks of training. Operatives concocted individual cover stories or ‘legends’, chose an alias and were given false documents and authentic Polish clothes. Those who successfully completed it took an oath of allegiance to the Polish Home Army (AK). They then waited in a holding station until selected for a mission in Poland.
2,613 Poles volunteered for special operations during the war, with 606 of them getting through the rigorous training course. 316 were later dropped into occupied Poland; the majority of them trained at Audley End.
These incredibly brave personnel were at the forefront of Polish resistance. Many became important staff officers in the AK, taking part in widespread partisan operations culminating in uprisings in Wilno, Lviv and Warsaw. 103 were killed in action or murdered by the Gestapo, and a further nine were executed by the Communists after the war.
Today, the Cichociemni are revered in Poland, with many commemorated with statues or plaques in their home towns. Their brave and heroic service inspired GROM, Poland’s modern special forces unit, to adopt their name and continue their traditions.
Britain, Poland, Ukraine. Then, as now, an incommunicable bond was sparked by conflict. After the war, five of the six men settled here as refugees. Franciszek Socha married a Scottish woman and returned to teaching. The film star Karol Dorwski died in London in 1980. Another settled in Bath.
Now, more than ever, it is vital we remember their sacrifice, and the shared connection, renewed once again, between our three peoples.

Description
Mary and Elizabeth Capel were the sisters of Arthur Capel (1632–1693), first Earl of Essex, who rebuilt and enlarged the house and gardens of the family seat, Cassiobury Park, beginning in 1677. This picture was installed at that time in the library along with other family portraits, eight by Lely, which remained in place until 1922, when the house and its contents were sold. Two more of those portraits are now in the Museum's collection: Sir Henry Capel by Lely (39.65.6) and George Capel, Viscount Malden, and Lady Elizabeth Capel by Reynolds (48.181).
Mary's first marriage was in 1648 to Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp, who died in 1654. In 1657 she married Henry Somerset, Lord Herbert. This portrait may have been painted on the occasion of her second marriage, when she would have been twenty-seven. Lord Herbert succeeded as third Marquess of Worcester in 1667 and was created Duke of Beaufort in 1682. The couple devoted themselves to enlarging Badminton House, his family estate in Gloucestershire, and to developing extensive walks and formal gardens modeled on those at Versailles. The duchess was especially interested in botany and propagated exotic plants. Her younger sister Elizabeth married Charles Dormer, second Earl of Carnarvon, in or before 1653. She was an amateur artist, and Lely shows her with a small picture of her own, a study of a tulip inscribed with her name under a coronet (Whinney and Millar 1957 and Millar 1963).

Emergency responders sprang into action early Tuesday to rescue residents in flooded areas of northeast Vermont after a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event caused a surge of dangerous floodwaters for the second time in a few weeks.

Ten swift-water rescue teams carried out around two dozen rescues in Caledonia and Essex counties, some of the hardest-hit areas. Flash flood emergencies warning of "catastrophic flooding" were issued as the storm unleashed inches of rainfall in just a few hours.
Nearly 8 inches of rain fell in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, within 6 hours—an amount considered a 1-in-1,000-year event, so extreme it typically occurs only once every thousand years under normal conditions. A total of 8.41 inches fell there, marking one of the highest calendar day totals in state history, according to the National Weather Service in Vermont.
Extreme rainfall is becoming more common as fossil fuel pollution raises temperatures, increasing the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor. Scientists are very confident that climate change is intensifying rainfall rates—how hard the rain is falling—and the total amount of rain a storm can produce.
Rescue teams remained in the area on Tuesday to respond to potential additional calls for help, as more rainfall was possible in the afternoon and evening, according to Vermont Emergency Management.
Floodwaters have washed out roads, leading to several state road closures.
A team was dispatched to survey the damage, which included significant structural and road damage, National Weather Service meteorologist Seth Kutikoff told the Associated Press.
“Unfortunately, some of these same areas were hit three weeks ago with serious flash flooding,” he said. “The integrity of some structures was already weakened.”

In Lyndonville, a town about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Montpelier, the state capital, Deryck Colburn was awakened by a neighbor pounding on his door. They live along a brook.
“I went down the road to her house, and there was no road. There was just a river,” he said.
Colburn described hearing the same surge of rushing water he had heard during flooding earlier in July, along with the unnerving sound of tumbling boulders carried by the water.
The nearby Passumpsic River rose 13 feet in four hours as floodwaters surged into it.
This is the third devastating flood event to hit Vermont in just over a year.
More than 100 people were rescued and at least one person died in early July after the remnants of Hurricane Beryl drenched the state.
Northeast Vermont and other parts of the state are also still recovering from extensive flooding just over a year ago. Last year’s flooding caused numerous road and bridge washouts, landslides, and mudslides, resulting in significant property damage and loss.

On Tuesday, they learned they were wrong.
“(Our driveway) was annihilated,” Nancy Tirozzi told CNN on Tuesday. “But now, it’s 20 times worse.”
Nancy and her husband, Anthony, rushed to their restaurant in St. Johnsbury, about two hours east of Burlington, as soon as they got an emergency weather warning around 4 a.m.
“We had no idea anything like this was gonna happen,” Nancy said, adding that the floodwaters were up to 5 feet deep outside the restaurant when they arrived. Once the waters receded, the couple began working tirelessly to clean up the mess.
“I can’t stop crying,” Nancy said. “It’s bad, it’s really, really bad. This community has been hurt.”
The property was too damaged to repair themselves, so the couple focused their energy on the inside of the building, sweeping out water and mud and ripping out the molding on the floor.
They hope to clean up enough to reopen in the next few days, but their hurried work might be for naught.
“When you’re not open, you can’t make money,” Nancy said. “But at this point, you can’t get to us. Our street is closed down,” she added.
