Favorite History Books || The Realm of St Stephen: A History of Medieval Hungary by Pál Engel ★★★★☆
This book was written for the non-Hungarian reader who wishes to discover what happened in the Carpathian basin during the Middle Ages. It is to be hoped that nobody living in that region who has strong national feelings will find comfort in it. Each of the nations of the region has its own vision of the past, incompatible with that of the others, and it was my firm intention that none of these visions should be represented in this volume. ...
Hungary is now one of the smallest countries of Europe. This book, however, is concerned with the medieval period, and here the name ‘Hungary’ will refer to the former kingdom of Hungary, which (even without the kingdom of Croatia which was once united with it) was more than three times larger than the present-day republic, and also somewhat larger than the combined area of Great Britain and Ireland. It extended over the whole of the Carpathian basin, including not only present-day Slovakia, but also considerable parts of Romania, Ukraine, Austria, Yugoslavia and Croatia. Although the kingdom of Hungary ceased to exist as an independent country at the end of the Middle Ages, politically it survived as an autonomous part of the Habsburg Empire until the end of the First World War in 1918.
The medieval kingdom of Hungary was born in a geographically well-defined region that is usually called the Carpathian basin. This is the drainage-area of the middle Danube valley, and is named after those mountain ranges with 2000 metre peaks that border it to the north, the east and the south. It is divided by the Danube into two parts of unequal proportions, and its centre is surrounded by mountain ranges of medium height. The region to the west of the Danube has been called Transdanubia since the period of the Ottoman occupation when the capital of the country was temporarily moved from Buda to Pressburg, on the northern bank of the river. The climate here is predominantly temperate, with a relatively heavy rainfall. This is a fertile landscape with hills of modest elevation interrupted by valleys and basins, and with the Balaton, the largest warm-water lake in Europe, at its heart. There are also mountain ranges – the Mecsek in the south-east, the Bakony and the Vértes north of the Balaton – but none rises higher than 600 metres. The landscape east of the Danube is profoundly different. The Great Hungarian Plain, which stretches without a single hill from Budapest to Oradea in the east and Belgrade in the south, can be regarded as a kind of appendix to the Eurasian steppe. The climate is rather more extreme here, with hot, dry summers, but the region is abundantly supplied with water by its main river, the Tisza, and its tributaries, which, before the nineteenth-century regulation works, meandered across the Great Plain. These rivers were flanked by marshlands, swamps and inundation forests, and also by fertile pastures and meadows, offering favourable conditions for fishing and livestock breeding. To the north, east and south-east of the Great Plain, in present-day Slovakia and Romania, there are mountain ranges that become progressively higher as one travels outwards from the Plain. They were formerly extremely rich in minerals; but, with the exception of the valleys, they have never been propitious to human settlement. Consequently, until the late Middle Ages these mountains were covered by forests and largely uninhabited, and colonization of them continued into the early modern period.

Vedic Astrology Observations
1. Punarvasus tend to be very spiritual if not religious. They find peace in prayer. Another thing I've noticed is that they are very sexually conservative (probably because of their cat yoni). Mariah Carey, Punarvasu Moon was a virgin when she married her first husband and waited until marriage to be intimate with her second husband as well. She was engaged to James Packer for 18 months and they reportedly never had a physical relationship.
Miranda Kerr, Punarvasu Moon was in a relationship with Evan Spiegel for 3 years and waited until marriage. Drew Barrymore, Punarvasu Moon has said that she's been celibate since her divorce in 2016.
2. Mariah Carey, Punarvasu Moon speaking of the nature of light & time , her memoir has multiple chapters titled with light-related names and even sooo many of her songs , including Butterfly (Punarvasus are connected to butterflies)
3. Moksha gana nakshatras embody the trickster archetype. They also often argue or provoke people simply for the heck of it. 2/3 Moon ruled naks (Rohini & Hasta) are Moksha gana and it makes sense as to why they fuck with people just because they can, they have nothing to gain from it and it serves no purpose, they're evil for the heck of it. They'll go to any length to ruin you even if they ruin themselves in the process.
Moksha means liberation in Sanskrit (Sanskrit is a classical language like Latin that is pretty much only used in a scholarly context) and is one of 4 purusharthas or motivations assigned to the 27 naks. The others are artha (wealth) kama (pleasure) and dharma (duty). Moksha would be located at the very top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which means an individual with Moksha gana naks has transcended all the other base level motivations of accumulating wealth, seeking pleasure and doing one's duty. What is left to do now? If an individual is evolved, they actually seek liberation through their spirituality but if they are not, not only are they unbothered by any ordinary human motives, they lack the ability to devote themselves to anything ordinary because they simply dont care about getting a job or building a house or whatever. this means they also kind of exist beyond normal social norms?? go up against a Moksha gana native/Moon dominant person and the kind of arguments they'll use against you will reveal this nature of theirs. like they will have zero issue using your every vulnerability and insecurity against you just to win an argument or put you down. they hate to look "weak" so they will tear you apart just because they can, with no regard for any history you share. there are people who defend this by saying "oh well i was mad" babygirl everybody gets mad, but if someone isnt raising their voice, being petty or singling you out and bringing up your past to make you crumble, its not because they're incapable of it, its because they have principles.
Moksha gana naks love to play devil's advocate.
4. Rahuvians have bad memory, they probably repeat the same stories in different ways every few weeks lol
5. Saturnian women often marry billionaires according to Claire Nakti and I recently found some more examples of that:
** Mariah Carey, UBP Sun was engaged to Australian billionaire, James Packer who used to date Miranda Kerr, Pushya Rising (both these women are also Punarvasu Moon), Miranda is now married to the CEO of Snapchat.
** Lisa Manobal, UBP Sun is dating Frederic Arnault, a French billionaire
** Elle Macpherson, UBP Sun was in a relationship with Arpad Busson with whom she had 2 kids (he's not a billionaire but he does have a net worth of $500 million)
6. Nominative determinism, literally "name-driven outcome", is the hypothesis that people tend to gravitate towards areas of work that reflect their names.
but i thought i'd use it in the context of astrology and how most people are subconsciously given names that reflect their nakshatras
ex: Angelina Jolie
the name Angelina is an expansion of Angela which is derived from the Greek word Angelos which means "Angel" or "messenger". Angelina has Revati Moon which is a deva ("godly" nakshatra) and Jolie is the French word for "pretty" and Angelina has Venus in 1h and is Pushya Rising (these were two of the biggest beauty indicators according to Claire's research)
(its so cute to me that her name is literally Angel Pretty bc damn right she is)
Yara Shahidi (Revati Moon)- Yara is the name of a water spirit and in Portuguese it means "Water lady" (Yara has stated that her name means one who is close to your heart, but names can have several different meanings) and Shahidi means "witness" in Persian. I feel like all of that really ties together with Revati being in pisces rashi and the last nakshatra that is "witness" to everything else etc

Pipe holder, rear view. Shocking, the things our great-grandparents had around the house.
Came home from work last night and found the Abomination casually left by my partner on the drawing-room sofa. There's no delicate way of saying it: the Abomination is an oversized d***o belonging to my partner, I believe a reproduction of the genitals of the deceased porn star Arpad Miklos. I call it "the Abomination of Desolation". My partner calls it "Andy". I don't know whether to be flattered or disgusted. All I know is I loathe the damned thing.

Woe to Tyrants
1 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, 2 to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, in the storm which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? 4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still.
Arrogant Assyria Also Judged 5 Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger, the staff of my fury! 6 Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 But he does not so intend, and his mind does not so think; but it is in his mind to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; 8 for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings? 9 Is not Calno like Car′chemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samar′ia like Damascus? 10 As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samar′ia, 11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samar′ia and her images?”
12 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem he will punish the arrogant boasting of the king of Assyria and his haughty pride. 13 For he says:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I have removed the boundaries of peoples, and have plundered their treasures; like a bull I have brought down those who sat on thrones. 14 My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as men gather eggs that have been forsaken so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.”
15 Shall the axe vaunt itself over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! 16 Therefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. 17 The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. 18 The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the Lord will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. 19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down.
The Repentant Remnant of Israel
20 In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean upon him that smote them, but will lean upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord, the Lord of hosts, will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.
24 Therefore thus says the Lord, the Lord of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they smite with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. 25 For in a very little while my indignation will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. 26 And the Lord of hosts will wield against them a scourge, as when he smote Mid′ian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. 27 And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke will be destroyed from your neck.”
He has gone up from Rimmon, 28 he has come to Ai′ath; he has passed through Migron, at Michmash he stores his baggage; 29 they have crossed over the pass, at Geba they lodge for the night; Ramah trembles, Gib′e-ah of Saul has fled. 30 Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Hearken, O La′ishah! Answer her, O An′athoth! 31 Madme′nah is in flight, the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. 32 This very day he will halt at Nob, he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
33 Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the great in height will be hewn down, and the lofty will be brought low. 34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe, and Lebanon with its majestic trees will fall. — Isaiah 10 | Revised Standard Version (RSV) Revised Standard Version of the Bible, copyright © 1946, 1952, and 1971 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. F@tT Fic Marathon: 1641-1660
Tumblr media
okay i think i'm making pretty phenomenal pace right now to be quite honest. am i getting a bunch of work in grad school assigned right now that would slow this down if i were in anyway a reasonable person? yes. but i am trying to juggle this (reading for pleasure), school AND ongoing efforts to build and maintain a social life all at once
safe house by Arpad - finnegan hands and achilles apollo in a safe house, tender and awkward
gifts from a nameless wood by evilmageclub - a very lovely story of Samot and Samothes meeting and getting together. I love the complexity of young samot here, how he's both like a social butterfly and a reclusive scholar and forward but also awkward and embarassed (while nameless wood gets the main rec, i do also want to shout out evilmageclub's post-SiH samsam work from this twenty: a boat's hull, a bridge, a promise unbroken for the idea that Samot's body is a fucking grave)
the fog rolls in by meowclops - fic and then comic using the same script of an awkward antagonistic conversation between broun and clementine slightly post-partizan!
hilariously (to me, particularly after a mutual responded to a comment i made calling me by name a few updates ago), the fic portion of the above comic/fic was apparently edited in preparation for my arrival at it and while I am flattered and appreciate the effort put in there (<3), i hope anyone who's fic i am approaching now that I've reached the 2022s knows that i do not judge you for your fic quality, and that i set out on this project knowing i would encounter a wide spectrum of skill, effort, and subject matter and that i am not suffering when i read your work!
words read: 90,344 (4,556,249 total)
works remaining: 300 (!)
next twenty:
Tumblr media
(i'll have you know there's a fucking behemoth in here, so we'll see how well I'll be able to keep up my at least five a day pace)

The Turul, the mythical bird of Hungarians
One of the most beautiful and mysthical symbol of Hungarians is the Turul bird. The Turul is probably a large falcon, and the origin of the word is most likely Turkic: togrıl or turgul means a medium to large bird of prey. Turul – as first name – used in Turkey even today. In Hungarian tradition, Turul bird presumably originated as the clan symbol used in the 9th and 10th centuries by the ruling House of Arpad.
In the legends of the ancient Hungarian tribes Turul bird turns up several times. In the legend of Emese, the mother of all Hungarians , recorded in the Gesta Hungarorum and the Chronicon Pictum, the turul is mentioned as occurring in a dream of Emese, when she was already pregnant. In older literature, Turul himself is the “impregnator”, but the message is clear. The Turul’s role is one of a protector spirit, that defends the childrens of Emese from all harms. In a second dream by the leader of the Hungarian tribes those saint prey birds saved the their horses from an attack of wild eagles. And finally according the tradition, when the Hungarian tribes wandered from inner Asia to find a new home to settle down, a Turul bird led them here, to the Carpathian basin.
The Turul is used as in the design of coats of arms of the Hungarian Army, the Counter Terrorism Centre and the Office of National Security today. There were 3 large Turul statues, each with a wingspan of 15 metres, in the Historical Hungary (before the country had its borders reconfigured by the Treaty of Trianon). The last of the three stands on a mountain near Tatabánya, Hungary, but the other two were destroyed. The Tatabánya one is the largest bird statue in Europe, and the largest bronze statue in Central Europe. There remained 195 Turul statues in Hungary, as well as 48 in Romania (32 in Transylvania and 16 in Partium), 8 in Slovakia, 7 in Serbia, 5 in Ukraine, 1 in Austria. And one more as of 29th September 2012, St. Michael the Archangel’s Day erected in Hungary’s Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park neaby Szeged.

the bookstore in which merel works at
the tacky tourist shop anne-fleur works at
a singular post box? and merel's bike (i know my drama society has a bike bc parfumerie and merel would have a mint bike although she never ever rides it so thats something else we probs dont have to see it. im pretty sure the bike in parfumerie was unridable bc the actor playing arpad never got on it.)

Women’s History Meme || Happy Marriages (2/5) ↬ Ludwig IV, Landgraf von Thüringen and Árpád-házi Szent Erzsébet
Together, these witnesses offered the commission a series of remarkably intimate vignettes drawn from practically the whole span of Erzsébet’s short life. In them are captured everything from her love for Ludwig to her disdain for the life of privilege that came with her marriage; from her oath of obedience to Konrad [von Marburg] to her repeated efforts to subvert his authority; from the joy of bathing lepers to her dreams of begging door to door the way the Franciscans did.

1883. 2 September, Schönbrunn. So Stephanie has a little daughter.
Early breakfast in Mama's salon with the four of us: Mama, the Queen [Marie Henriette of the Belgians], Rudolf and me. There was talk of Stephanie all the time, she was said to have suffered a great deal and was also in danger for a moment. Rudolf slept a little on the floor next to her, and Stephanie said to Hofrat Braun: "I must not cry, lest I wake the Archduke"… Finally she called out: "Rudolf! You won't be angry with me if it's a girl?". So 5 minutes before 7 o'clock the little girl was born. Stephanie is said to have cried, and Rudolf said: "It doesn't matter - a daughter is much sweeter".
Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria (1998), Das Tagebuch der Lieblingstochter von Kaiserin Elisabeth (1878-1899) (Translation done by DeepL. Please keep in mind that in a machine translation a lot of nuance may/will be lost)
It was a blazing day in late summer. The sun shone through the open window, as if to greet the new arrival with its radiance—to greet Princess Elizabeth, born on Sunday, September 2nd, 1883, at seven o'clock in the morning.
The labour had been long and difficult, lasting twenty-six hours, but the child was vigorous and well-developed.
Immediately after her birth, a salute of twenty-one guns announced to the Monarchy that the child was a girl.
The Crown Prince was absolutely stricken, for he had set his heart upon an heir to the throne!
My dear mother, who had comforted me through the long hours of suffering, immediately grasped the distressing nature of the situation and skilfully averted any reproaches. She herself handed me my daughter, with the words:
“God bless your child, as I myself, wholeheartedly, bless you both!”
The baby was lovely. From the bottom of my soul I thanked God for the treasure he had bestowed upon me, and took my little one into my arms.
Three days later came the christening, in the presence of the Emperor, the Empress, and the whole Imperial family.
My child was given the name of my sainted ancestress of the house of Arpad, Elizabeth, which was also my mother-in-law’s name. I entrusted my baby to the protection of this saint, whose touching story is an ornament to German and Hungarian history.
Princess Stephanie of Belgium (1937). I was to be empress
ON THIS DAY, IN 1883, ARCHDUCHESS ELISABETH MARIE OF AUSTRIA WAS BORN. She was the only child of Crown Prince Rudolf and his wife Princess Stephanie of Belgium. After her father's death in 1889 she remained in the custody of her grandfather Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria. Because of Austria's semi-salic law (women could only inherit the throne in the case of the total extintion of the legitimate Habsburg male line) she didn't inherit her father's claim to throne of Austria, and neither to Hungary's although the country had no such law, because her grandfather did not want to divide the empire.
In 1902 she married Prince Otto of Windish-Graetz and they had four children. The marriage was unhappy and they separated after the fall of the Austrian monarchy. In 1948 she finally divorced him and married Leopold Petznek, an Austrian socialist politician whom had been her partner for the past twenty-seven years. Until her death in 1963 she was simply known as "Elisabeth Petznek".

Woe to Tyrants
1 Woe to those who enact unjust decrees and draft oppressive legislation 2 to deprive the impoverished of justice and rob my people’s poor of their rights, looting widows and preying on orphans! 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, when calamity comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth, 4 so as not to squat among the prisoners or fall among the slain?
Even after all this, his anger remains, his upraised hand still threatens.
5 “Oh Ashur, the rod expressing my anger! The club in their hands is my fury! 6 I am sending him against a hypocritical nation, ordering him to march against a people who enrage me, to take the spoil and the plunder and trample them down like mud in the street. 7 That is not what Ashur intends, that is not what they think; rather, they mean to destroy, to cut down nation after nation. 8 For [their king] says, ‘Aren’t all my commanders kings? 9 Hasn’t Kalno [suffered] like Kark’mish, Hamat like Arpad, Shomron like Dammesek? 10 Just as my hand reached the kingdoms of non-gods, with more images than in Yerushalayim and Shomron; 11 so won’t I do to Yerushalayim and her non-gods what I did to Shomron and her idols?’”
12 Therefore when Adonai has done everything he intends to do to Mount Tziyon and Yerushalayim, “I will punish the king of Ashur for the boasting that comes from his proud heart and from reveling in his arrogant looks. 13 For he says,
“‘With my own strong arm I have done this, and with my wisdom, because I’m so clever! I erased the boundaries between peoples, I plundered their stores for the future; as a mighty man, I subjugated the inhabitants. 14 My hand found the riches of the peoples like a nest; and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth! Not one wing fluttered, not one beak opened or let out a chirp!’”
15 Should the axe glorify itself over the one who chops with it? Should the saw magnify itself over the one who moves it? It’s as if a stick could wave the hand that raises it up, or as if a wooden staff could lift [a person, who is] not made of wood. 16 Therefore the Lord, Adonai-Tzva’ot, will send leanness to his well-fed ones; and in place of his glory, a fire will be kindled that will burn and burn. 17 The light of Isra’el will become a fire and his Holy One a flame, burning and devouring his thorns and briars in a single day. 18 The glory of his forest and of his fertile land he will consume body and soul, like an invalid wasting away. 19 So few forest trees will remain that a child could list them.
20 On that day the remnant of Isra’el, those of the house of Ya‘akov who escaped, will no longer rely on the man who struck them down, but will truly rely on Adonai, the Holy One of Isra’el. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Ya‘akov, to the mighty God. 22 For, although your people, Isra’el, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with justice. 23 Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot will bring about this decreed destruction throughout all the land.
24 Therefore Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot says:
“My people living in Tziyon, don’t be afraid of Ashur, even when he strikes you with a stick and raises his staff against you, the way it was in Egypt. 25 For in but a little while, my fury will end; and my anger will have destroyed them.”
26 Adonai-Tzva’ot will wield a whip against them, as he did when striking Midyan at the Rock of ‘Orev; as his staff was over the sea, he will raise it, the way it was in Egypt.
27 On that day his burden will fall from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck; the yoke will be destroyed by your prosperity.
28 He has come to ‘Ayat and passed through Migron. He has stored his equipment at Mikhmas. 29 They have crossed the pass, then lodged at Geva. Ramah is shaking, Giv‘at-Sha’ul has fled. 30 Cry, shriek, Bat-Gallim! Listen, Layish! Poor ‘Anatot! 31 Madmenah is in flight, The people of Gevim take cover. 32 This very day he will stop at Nov; and he will shake his fist at the mountain of the daughter of Tziyon, at the hill of Yerushalayim. 33 See how Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot lops off the branches with terrible violence! The ones standing highest are chopped down, the lofty are laid low. 34 He will hack down the forest underbrush with an axe, and the L’vanon in its splendor falls. — Isaiah 10 | Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) Complete Jewish Bible Copyright 1998 by David H.
