Super C’mon the Docking! ~ KyuuutamaJin!
Whooo boooy, I do not have very many nice things to say about this guy...
The Good: The Houou Kyutama has little sparkles in it to help differentiate it from the Shishi Kyutama. That’s neat. It’s got some solid clicks to it when you transform it. It has...electronics...Oh! And the KyutamaJin face does this neat thing where when you plug a Kyutama on it it pops the face out, and the fact that its a single Zord that repurposes the Kyutama connection points could have been considered a nice extension of the gimmick...could have.
The Bad: Houou Base is just two big chunks of plastic. It does nothing for Gigant Houou; it is literally just for the combined mode. It doesn’t match the aesthetics of the other Megazords, it doesn’t have any interplay with any of the other Voyagers, its arms are dumb stubby... An easy fix for a lot of these issues for me is go the Raiden-Oh/Plezu-Oh route. It can have its normal stubby arms, but have an alternate way to configure the arms so you can use use the other Voyagers with it. Add some interplay!
The Ugly: You see that last picture? That, to me, is an enormous issue. First of all, the combination looks dumb from every angle but forward. Second of all, look at that pile of parts! That is 10 incomplete Voyagers that are now useless and cannot combine because all of their Kyutamas have been taken off them. I know I mentioned during my Dedokai-Oh review that its Ugly was very similar, but I’ve kinda backtracked on that feeling a bit due to the fact that its the sleekest and best-looking all-quarter combined Megazord of, really, all time. I mean, there’s only four other ones (Hurricanger, Go-Onger, Shurikenger, and ToQger), but still; it drops four parts. One of them’s pretty big, but it’s still a fairly small pile of stuff that’s easy to store behind it and not lose anything. There are basically two-and-a-half Megazords worth of parts left to do nothing when you assemble KyutamaJin. Who thought that was a good idea? It feels like either a terrible design choice or a purposeful choice to push the releases of the Cockpit Sets and Cerberus Voyager, except there’s no release date for Cockpit Set 3, so Oguma Voyager is still useless. Suuucks!
And just handling it gave me an idea of how it could actually work. If you’ve watched the show, you’ll know that that they needed 3 Kyutamas to find the Argos Ship that eventually transformed into the 3 components that make up the Houou set. You could have had Gigant Houou still separate the same way, have the sculpt altered so it doesn’t have the plugs on the back of everything, and use the Houou Kyutama and the 3 Argos Ship Kyutamas to combine the parts onto Shishi Voyager. While it wouldn’t fill the role of the “all team” combination, it would make everything else feel less useless, it could fill the role of the final payoff for the rivalry between Shishi Red and Houou Soldier, and you could possibly swap some of the parts with other Voyagers, increasing their interplay. You could maybe even do a TimeRobo where you could swap its own limbs around. That’s cool, that’s interplay, that’s extension of gimmick; that is everything that this toy lacks.
Yes, I don’t like this toy. This might be the first time I flat out say do not buy this toy. Not only does it have no interplay, but it’s almost detrimental to have it. In order to compensate for having it you have to buy another Voyager and multiple Kyutamas, which is about $75 worth of extra product to add purpose to the products you’ve already bought that this toy takes away from them. It is seriously a bad toy and it is the reason I will not be going completionist after Kyuranger wraps up. I will get the Q1s and whatever tickles my fancy, but unless a toy line totally speaks to me I won’t be doing this again.

(Legendary Houou Soldier) "Got to move faster! Gonna have to push this warp engine to the limit!" Tsurugi said as the Houou Voyager rocketed through warp space.
Vivian was busy walking up and down the path leading from the house to the pool, thinking about something her mom had said before she died.
"I remember just before you were born, I was really fidgety for about three or four days beforehand..."
Maybe that passed down to me, she thought, pausing at the corner of the path as one of the twins --she was convinced it was Orion every time-- kicked. "Hey sweetie, calm down, Daddy's gonna be here when you get here, promise," she said with a soft giggle.

More Kyuranger headcanons! (Sorry if this is annoying or anything. I just really like this series.)
Stinger, Kotaro, and Lucky are all autistic.
Lucky is extroverted, hyper, and is not really good at understanding why other people don’t want him to do certain things. He also is sort of bad at understanding situations if he doesn’t have enough context. He has a special interest in other planets, always wanting to know more about them. He is the best at speaking (verbally, anyway.) and helps the others deal with overload and stress. He does echolalia a lot. (The whole “Yossha lucky!” thing is primarily this.)
Stinger is more introverted and hyperempathic. He has a hard time controlling his emotions due to how intense they are. He is also prone to sensory or empathy overload a lot. He has a bad habit of chewing on his tail when stressed (Kotaro gets him a chewy necklace to help with this). The necklace Scorpio gave him years ago is a comfort object for him and he hates people touching his stuff. His special interest is singing and he’s actually pretty good.
Kotaro is sort of in between Stinger and Lucky when it comes to personality. He is very determined and also very attached to friends and family. His special interest is space and history. (He was really excited when he saw houou voyager for the first time.) His stims are mostly echolalia or movement based, like flapping or pacing.
Tsurugi is adhd. (Combined type)
He is rather impulsive and comes off as arrogant because he sometimes doesn’t pay attention to or understand what the others around him are doing, so he overcompensates in an attempt to not get left behind. He is really terrified of people forgetting about him because of RSD and anxiety, so he acts sort of hammy to hide it. His hyperfixation is space, which I headcanon as the reason he became an astronaut in the first place.

So let’s talk some Toku news because...I’m going to be buying things, and I have opinions on the things I’m going to buy. Luckily there’s only 2 upcoming big toys over the next couple months I’m going to be getting, and I’d like to say my piece, I guess.
Giganto Houou: I like the idea behind the combination transformation, mostly because it actually looks a lot like a Megazord design I was doodling last May before Kyuranger got its announcement. It also (both Houou and my design) has some similarities to the Mega Voyager from MegaRanger. I have 2 issues with it, both related to its combined forms and which are subsequently remedied by other releases. Firstly, The fact that it requires Shishi Voyager and no one else, meaning you’ll have 10 other Voyagers lying around. Seven if you create another Megazord. This is actually remedied by the release of the second toy we’ll be talking about, who is a remold of ShishiVoyager and seems to have all the necessary parts to do his combinations. The second is that it requires you to remove all the Kyutamas, leaving you’re remaining Voyagers kinda bare. Again, this is remedied by the DX Cockpit Set releases, so the X number of Kyutamas I’ll have lying around will serve a purpose. Overall, I wish he integrated a bit more, but if you’re going completionist on the line then that integration is negligible. At least until fourth quarter...
And I can’t figure out where the combined feet pieces go normally.
Cerberus Voyager:
And yes, it is Cerberus. I translated it myself. It’s just in Japanese it’s pronounced more like Care-Bear-Us, which is why the katakana doesn’t line up quite right. (If you’ve messed with some of the Wizard toys you might be familiar.) Anyways, I like him and find him quite hilarious. I mean, it’s got a pug face. Seriously. I can see the combination points required to combine with Ryu Voyager, so it should be able to fill all of Shishi Voyager’s roles, hopefully with either Ryu or Houou.
Oh, and this is probably our movie toy for this year. I was expecting it to be a remold of Hebitsukai Voyager, but I think this will work out better in the long run.
Houou Soldier and ShishiRed Orion:
I don’t have a ton to say on these guys, other than Lucky is a Kamen Rider, Soldier’s head is a Kyutama, and we’ve now officially hit 12 Rangers, surpassing Kyoryuger’s 11 and making this the series with the most Rangers of any previous Sentai.
What, don’t tell me you forgot about DeathRyuger/KyoryuNavy? Don’t worry, most people did.
Overall overall, I’m happy. Next Megazord isn’t until July based on the calendar, so I’ve got time to save up and recoup my impending purchase of Brave Kyoryujin. I just hope the pacing of the show slows down a bit so we can enjoy what’s coming. We’re only on episode 9 people, and we’ve already met the first 11 Rangers. Slooow dooown.
Oh, and here’s that sketch I mentioned:

Review: Mini-Pla Kyutama Gattai Series 4 Gigant Houou
Review: Mini-Pla Kyutama Gattai Series 4 Gigant Houou
“5-4-3-2-1, Rangers in Space!” ~ Mini-Pla Gigant Houou has arrived to represent Houou Soldier, adding to the legend of Tsurugi Ōtori! This Mini-Pla set starts off as all three parts, before combining into Gigant Houou. Yet, that is not all it can do, as it can also become Kyutamajin, by combining with the Shishi Voyager.
Now, this…

Wait, so he uses the Argo to travel around? I’d guess he’d use Houou Voyager for that. (but I suppose he will use Voyager in the future after it’s debut this ep)

Today, Bandai Japan updated their website with the official listing for DX Houou Voyager, Houou Soldier’s signature mecha. The DX Houou Voyager will include the DX Houou Kyutama, and will be able to separate into its various components. In addition, the toy will feature lights and sounds. The Houou Voyager will be able to combine with the Houou Station and Houou Base to become Gigant HouOh. Furthermore, by utilizing the other Kyurangers’ henshin-related Kyutamas, and the Shishi Voyager, it will allow Gigant HouOh to further combine into Kyutamajin. The DX Houou Voyager will be sold at retail for 9,180 yen, and will be released on July 29.

Kojishi Voyager! - Super Shishi Voyager! - Super KyuuRen-Oh!
So, if you hadn’t noticed yet, I did skip on getting Orion Battler. It just wasn’t doing anything for me, and ended up being a giant brick with even less transformation than Lion Ha-Oh. I used the money I had saved up for it to get Tategami LiOh and FS-00, which I feel was money better spent.
So this is the second case we’ve had of an end-of-season upgrade for the Q1 Megazord combination. And it’s another head and a backpack. It’s a better looking head and backpack, but it’s still just a head and backpack. I mean, the first time they did a movie toy it wasn’t anything amazing, just a repaint with a slightly different Megazord head, but we’ve come a long way since then and have gotten some amazing toys. If this is the start of a new trend, I look forward to seeing where it goes in the future, it’s just still learning to crawl right now.
The Good: It is a nice head sculpt for the most part, and the added upgrade component for Shishi Voyager is kinda nice and something we don’t see very often. It’s a cool proof of concept piece, and a definite improvement over Cube Octopus. You can also store Shishi Voyager’s face and Kyutama on the Bazooka, so there’s no need to worry about parts loss.
This might also be my favorite Kyuutama. The concept of the slide adding more to the image rather than completing it is super cool, and if they released more interesting Kyuutamas like that I might have actually tried to pick them up.
If you did the Cerberus Voyager mod I brought up in its review, then you’ll be happy to know you are perfectly capable of displaying Super Shishi Voyager with the mod in effect (note I said display, not play).
Tumblr media
The C-Clip location for the back legs is set in a heavy indentation, so it won’t shift at all if you’re sliding it around and is easy to hold on to if you need to move it.
The Bad: Other than its inability to be used with any other combination other than its own Super combinations (ignoring that you can swap the face to make Super Ryutei KyuuRen-Oh [which I should have taken a picture of...]), I do have some issue with the head sculpt. Like I said earlier, it is mostly good. The only problem I have with it is the horns. They make the head look a lot bigger, giving it a somewhat distorted feel, and the fact that it’s the same red as the rest of the head doesn’t help. I feel like if they weren’t there it’d look a lot better. Also, while it has a lot of paint, it’s surprisingly lacking right around the actual face, which again makes it feel larger than it is. If they’d done up the muzzle in the same gold as Shishi Voyager’s face I feel that could have been avoided.
The Ugly: You ever notice how all the promotional pics for this guy are taken from a specific upward facing angle? That’s right, we’re talking about another weight and connection issue. You can see it in pics eight, nine, and ten that but there’s a bit of sculpt that comes down off the barrel that fits pretty snugly on top of any Kyuutama seated under it... except it floats about a quarter inch off where it’s supposed to be. So you’ve got a giant over-half-a-Voyager chunk floating off a connection I find somewhat questionable.
Tumblr media
It’s a two-and-two C-Clip, so it’s not like it’s weak, but the fact that it’s such a heavy piece that’s just floating off a connection at the corner of its center of mass has me concerned.
The Details: Here’s a section we don’t normally see in a Sentai review. I did add a few minor details to Kojishi Voyager. Firstly, because of the details in the Kojishi eyes, but the fact that they’re so sunken into the head it makes said details hard to see, I panel lined them.
Tumblr media
It might be tough to make out here, but it’s a lot easier to see than they were before. I also added a little to the sides of the mane and a few of the details that they cover up, but are exposed in the Super head form.
Tumblr media
Now it’s a lot easier to see, isn’t it? Again, I know not a lot of people do stuff like this to Sentai toys, especially since the plastic isn’t made for it, but I feel it helps in some cases. I also did up the barrel of the Bazooka in black like I did a long time ago for Cube Kirin, and I feel that helps even more than the panel lining.
Tumblr media
It is no longer a big red square at the end of a big red stick.
The End: So we’ve come to the presumed end of the toys that at least I will be collection for Kyuranger. So how are they as a whole package? While a lot of them have interesting ideas on an individual level, I feel they suffer a lot in the aspect of combinations, which for me is a heavy draw to these types of toys. I like the fact that all the limbs are swappable, but then Gigant Houou is exempt from that gimmick. I like the idea behind KyuutamaJin, but it leaves a pile of parts bigger than the actual Megazord behind to make it. This line had a bunch of good ideas that were sadly not executed well. And they never released Kyuutama Cockpit Series 3! Where’s my tiny Sky Blue and Soldier!
Overall, this was a really long review. First with five sections I believe, and the first time I’ve done “The End” which will probably pop up whenever I find myself at the end of my own personal journey through a line. Back to Kojishi, it’s a cute little toy, and I like it, but I don’t know if I can recommend it since it doesn’t really add anything. It’s pretty cheap, so if you’re curious and have a little extra then there’s nothing wrong with the toy. There’s nothing bad about it. It’s just doesn’t do anything to make it stand out or feel unique.

“Seiza Docking! Cerberios!
                             ...Ryutei Cerberios!
                                  ...KyutaMeijin!”
WARNING!!!: YOU CANNOT COMBINE CERBERUS VOYAGER WITH RYUTEIOH OR GIGANT HOUOU OUT OF THE BOX!!! I modded mine, so that’s why I’m able to show what the multi-Megazord combinations look like, but be aware that if you buy this toy you will not be able to make those combinations without doing so yourself. I talk about how I did it below.
And can I say, I’m really disappointed I had to do all that. I mean, it’s not like with Cube Condor where they just left out pieces, making it unable to do so; they literally made new parts to replace the back plugs so that it couldn’t. As someone who constantly harps on about stuff like interplayability between toys, seeing it removed from a remold hurts me in my core, man. Anyway...
The Good: If you only got the first nine Voyagers (like I wish I did) then this perfectly fits the role of holding the other 4 that normally just sit there in their alternate modes. Other than the one missing component I already mentioned, it’s another Shishi Voyager with two really cool pseudo-Kyutamas. Also, I like his face more.
The Bad: It’s just Shishi Voyager again, with cool shoulders and less playability. And if you did what I did and picked up the individual Ryu and Kuma Voyagers instead of the boxed set with a second copy of Sasori Voyager, then you don’t even have enough limbs for all your mechs.
Oh, and if you mod it, the shoulders bump into stuff a lot as Ryutei Cerberios.
The Ugly is that they took away its ability to combine with the other Megazords, which I figured out how to fix within 5 minutes of owning the toy, so I’m instead going to replace this section with...
The Modding: I’m going to preface this section by saying that, while the connections are still pretty solid, this mod requires you removing the female plugs from Shishi Voyager’s legs in order to stick them in Cerberus Voyager. If that immediately turns you off from the idea, and I don’t blame you if it does, then I’m sorry.
All you need is a strong, narrow screwdriver to do this. You’re first going to want to unscrew all the Voyager legs from the back of Cerberus Voyager and remove the teal caps. The screws are on the outside of the legs, so they’re easy to access. You can screw the lower legs back together, but keep the upper legs open for the time being.
Next, unscrew the bottom set of Shishi Voyager’s Voyager legs, remove the female plugs inside them, and place them inside Cerberus Voyager’s upper legs where the caps used to be, then screw them back together. Note that you don’t want to put the caps back in any of the open holes as you need clearance for the male plugs when combining.
Tumblr media
It should start by looking like it does on the right, and wind up like it does on the left once you’ve finished.
And you’re done! Now you can combine Cerberios with Ryutei-Oh and Gigant Houou, just like with Kyuren-Oh. Again, since you’re only using 2 plugs instead of 4, the connection won’t be as stable for actual play (this is more for display purposes), but they do solidly hold together if you’re handling it or if it’s just sitting there on a display shelf.
Overall, the fact that it loses playability for me is a huge hit against this toy, but being easily modifiable helps remedy that a little. I was actually expecting to write a nice review about this toy, and having such a disappointment so soon after getting it really killed the excitement of receiving it. Anyway, pick this guy up if you’ve only got the original 9 or if you’ve gone completionist and intend on modding it.
