I really hate everything about Teppei in Higurashi Gou/Sotsu
I usually don’t use tumblr to blog, but I just needed to vent somewhere since Teppei has come up in conversations a lot due to the recent Meguri version of Tatariakashi.
Tumblr media
Anyway, like I said, I’m mostly venting, but I really despise everything about his character and role, not only execution, but even on a conceptual level. This abuser who treated Satoko as nothing but an object and generally led a trash life, causing problems, not only to Satoko herself but even to completely unrelated people (like Rena) is now somehow cosmically connected to Satoko. Because they’re “family”? Even though they had no actual family relationship or blood bonds. So, from where does this “family” comes from? Because he is called “Uncle”? Really?
Anyway, this allows him to see his own death in several worlds and makes him change to avoid that. And somehow this instantly turns him into a completely different person, never falling to old habits or being presented in a negative way again. That’s just not how people work. There is a reason many abusive relationships go through cycles of reconciliation and abuse. People just don’t work like that. But he gets to be magically transformed into his ideal self... and then, that ideal self, is the only one who manages to touch Satoko’s heart and make her hesitate even if only for a few moments. While she laughs while making the girl who protected her in spite of her own family go insane and then killing her.
Yet again, I really hate everything about this situation. The group that was around her for years suddenly doesn’t matter at all and their actions are all hollow. Even when interacting in new unexpected ways (like Satoko asking Mion to train her with guns), there’s no emotional connection at all. Even though returning to 83 by itself should produce some reaction in her, even separate from Rika, considering her attitude with the club changing. But there’s nothing. And yet, her original abuser being generically “nice” somehow is this big unforeseen hit that keeps making her crack. It’s such a forced and senseless reversion that just makes me despise the whole scenario, especially when the show tries to be “realistic” in other points. And, actually, that’s one of the main reasons this turn bothers me.
If we are doing this fantasy scenario, where even Teppei gets a good ending he should never have gotten, without any real effort, then that will go for everyone, right? But, nope. We get Rika and Satoko in the end unable to reconcile and going their own ways, with Rika still seemingly wishing to leave Hinamizawa and leave everyone behind due to her loops. In spite of how much she seemed to love it and her friends and just wanted that life to continue in the VN (even dismissing the idea of running away alone from Hinamizawa in order to attempt to escape her death because it’d be pointless if she were away from everything she loves). The evil abuser gets magic basically giving him the best future possible at that point, past character be damned, while Rika has to “face reality” or whatever (even though that’s not even the original world from when the loops started, which is why she’s still just going for her first year of St.Lucia again, rather than being halfway through her 2nd year). Everything about that scenario just makes me sick. It’s something that still bothers me when people talk about Sotsu now. It couldn’t pick a lane, and someone decided that an evil man should be gifted while Rika just needed more suffering. And that’s her resolution, while the series plays a happy song and tries to show everyone smiling. Besides Rika, because it’d obviously feel odd if those smiling St.Lucia scenes which were previously portrayed negatively in the anime were thrown again right in the middle of that hollow happy ending montage.
The recent Meguri chapters, where Teppei’s role was minimized and rushed through, with his actions being unable to touch Satoko’s heart, brought back the conversation about that entire situation with many people lamenting the manga cut Satoko’s heart being affected by him... and, well, reading all that just made me think about that entire scenario that still bothers me to no end. The perfect take would be just ignoring his change completely, but if it was going to be there, since Ryukishi07 has pushed it so much, I’m fine with it being reduced to a footnote. Well, actually, showing him attempting to change, just to have him fall back to his true self would be the best and most satisfying and complete take on the character, although that would also need even more focus than what he had. But unfortunately, no official take on the character pushed that direction.
Of course, it’s still possible Meguri’s ending will annoy me just as much as Sotsu’s, depending on how it turns out regarding Teppei, Rika and its overall tone, in spite of the promise of a new final arc and ending.

SSR Teppei? Not in Meguri!
I’ve been talking about this recently - it really is interesting how much the depiction of Teppei Houjou in Tatariakashi-hen differs in the Sotsu anime and Meguri manga. It really feels like the former is the ideal outcome for the character, while the latter is the more...realistic one.
Tumblr media
In Sotsu, Satoko only asks Teppei to live with her after they’ve been spending time together for quite a while, with it already established that she “forgives” him. Even so, Teppei doesn’t immediately agree to the request until Satoko tells him that she’s being bullied, which he is genuinely distressed about. In Meguri, Satoko asks him immediately after his first time approaching her and apologizing to her, which included him saying that he will gladly leave and never show his face around her again if she so wishes. Her only reasoning is “we can make peace for each other and be a real family”. Given what Teppei had done to her in the past, there is no justified reason he should agree to this, but he does because he’s a fucking idiot who does want to do good now but has no frame of reference for what that looks like.
Tumblr media
In Sotsu, Teppei struggles with his desire to do right by Satoko clashing with his ingrained angry, thuggish nature and instinctive resorting to violence to solve his problems. When he starts to realize that his way of doing things will only hurt Satoko further but still desiring to do something and make the situation less dire than “the two of us against the whole village”, as Satoko puts it, he goes to Detective Oishi for help. In Meguri, Teppei seems to recognize immediately that he’s way in over his head with this situation, and his “Ill handle it!” bravado is clearly performative for Satoko’s sake rather than genuine; the man is a coward and doesn’t actually want to risk doing something that may backfire on him. This is why he is all too receptive when Satoko tells him to go to Oishi...yes, that’s her idea in Meguri, not his.
Tumblr media
In Sotsu, Teppei performs dogeza in front of Oishi to secure his help, and does so out in public. The look on his face shows that he still has his pride and hates having to throw it away like this, but he is willing to do so anyway because he truly wants to help Satoko. Even Satoko is shocked that Teppei would go so far on her account. In Meguri, Teppei performs dogeza in front of Oishi in the privacy of his and Satoko’s home, twice, and both times it is thoroughly unnecessary. He isn’t even thinking about his pride, he’s just desperate to do something good and right and “redemptive”, further showing that this buffoon has no idea what the Hell he is doing here. Satoko is shocked at his behavior, but not in a positive way.
Tumblr media
In Sotsu, Teppei actually recognizes the root problems of where he went wrong in life, shows remorse for it, and vows to better himself as a person. Satoko then sedates him so that he isn’t present for the phone call with the child protective services. In Meguri, Teppei is present for the phone call, and at the moment of truth where he decides to stop being such a coward and fight for Satoko, he does it in the same way he’s always done things: loud, angry, crass and belligerent. Clearly, he has not learned what his fatal flaws as a human being are and just feels like if he’s behaving this way to help Satoko instead of hurt Satoko then that makes it OK. And then, despite this, he still hesitates when the operator on the other line takes a more threatening tone with him, which allows Satoko the opening to just take the phone from him and handle things himself. Even when he tries to stop being a coward, he fails at it!
Tumblr media
In Sotsu, Teppei’s last scene has him acknowledging that a shithead like him doesn’t deserve the happiness he now feels at being an efficient guardian for Satoko. When Satoko then takes out a gun to shoot him with, her psyche fractures, with the human side of her yelling at him to run. But he doesn’t, nor does he attack her to get the gun away, because all of his concern is for her and whatever is plaguing her mentally. By the time the witch side of Satoko takes control, Teppei is still there and crying, not for himself but for his niece, making it all the sadder when she shoots him in the head. In Meguri, Teppei is relieved that the burdensome situation with Satoko being bullied is behind him now and, in a pitiful inner monologue, truly believes that now he can actually begin to redeem himself and change himself for Satoko’s sake. And then Satoko shoots him in the head from behind, with Teppei’s eyes reflecting a brief awareness of what just happened before he dies. Almost as if the universe was telling him “too little, too late”. In Sotsu, Teppei dies as a direct result of actually learning how to redeem himself, which feels terrible and unjust. In Meguri, Teppei dies as a direct result of failing to learn how to redeem himself, which feels inevitable and correct; like nature at work.
The Teppei we see in Sotsu was nicknamed “SSR Teppei” by fans, because it felt like time looping played out like a gaccha game and the loop of Tatariakashi-hen happened to spit out the best possible version of Teppei, one who was “super, special and rare”. Meguri, otoh, produced...just another Teppei, whose remorse for his past sins and good intentions to do right by Satoko were ultimately not enough to make up for what an utterly defective human being he still was. Satoko’s psyche didn’t fracture for him because her human side didn’t fully trust his reformation, and honestly how could she? And while I love SSR Teppei and am glad he’s a thing in the franchise, I appreciate Tomato-san going a more honest direction with the character as he was originally presented, a man who has fucked his life up beyond repair.

Higurashi When They Cry Hou Ch. 3 Tatarigoroshi pt. Final
I'm doing things slightly different here.
The following takes place between parts 17 and 18 of my playthrough. The interview with Keiichi is a post-credits scene, but because of the amount of screenshots I took during the credits and the typing I did for some of the stuff coming up I figured to treat it as a separate thing. A nice little denouement. I really hope tumblr doesn't murder the quality of the screenshots here. Italicized words are my own interjections and not what is written on screen. I tried my best with some of the later parts.
Tumblr media
Basically during this part and the credits I kept mashing the screenshot key.
"I made him seem like a very good person. I'll need to make him into a terrible criminal in the end."
"Apparently you're supposed to call disasters like the Great Hanshin Earthquake severe disasters. Still it's a terrifying operation plan. Though I guess sterilization operations are like this. I need to think hard so it's realistic."
Tumblr media
"Jirou Tomitake A mysterious old man with the role of an extra yet still popular. He won't be doing much for a while.
Miyo Takano I made this character seriously suspicious. Seems kind of like the last boss. Maybe she should be to one to take the punches in the end. I need to make her so bad even coach would punch her. Maybe a full transformation in the end is in order.
Kuraudo Ooishi A Completely enigmatic man, though I'll admit he's convenient. Maybe he'll turn trustworthy in the end after clearing up the misunderstandings?
Katsuya Kumatani A completely enigmatic man, though I'll admit he's convenient. Maybe he'll turn trustworthy in the end after clearing up the misunderstandings?
Why is Kumatani and Ooishi's the same?
Kyousuke Irie I made him seem like a very good person. I'll need to make him into a terrible criminal in the end.
Rika Furude A convenient character who can't help but garner popularity. If Satoko doesn't get more popular with this, then she might not be able to make a comeback. Speaking of suffering, maybe Mion has it worse (pained laugh). A mysterious girl, in a way. The incarnation of the curse theory?????"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hinamizawa Village Gas Disaster In Memoriam List Apparently you're supposed to call disasters like the Great Hanshin Earthquake severe disasters. Still it's a terrifying operation plan. Though I guess sterilization operations are like this. I need to think hard so it's realistic.
Reina Ryuugu (spelling?) Passed away in the great Hinamizawa disaster. May she rest in peace.
Mion Sonozaki Passed away in the great Hinamizawa disaster. May she rest in peace.
Oryou Sonozaki Passed away in the great Hinamizawa disaster. May she rest in peace
Satoko Houjou Went missing during the great Hinamizawa disaster???
Teppei Houjou Went missing during the great Hinamizawa disaster???
Ichirou Maebara, Aiko Maebara, Daiki Tomita, Suguru Okamura, and Kiichirou Kimiyoshi Passed away in the great Hinamizawa disaster. May he rest in peace. (I didn't feel like typing it out five times)
Rumiko Chie Went missing during the great Hinamizawa disaster???
Yukikazu Kameda Went missing during the great Hinamizawa disaster??? I have no recollection of who Kameda is whatsoever."
Tumblr media
"Tatsuyoshi Kasai I wonder if he really has a thing for Shion, that would be so cute if he did, hau u.
Shion Sonozaki The more minor of the twins always gets more popular, but to think it would still hold true. Maybe it's fate, or maybe coincidence. You're okay to think of watanagashi considering the suicide, though."
Tumblr media
"Keiichi Maebara Did he just end up going crazy in the end? My condolences I suppose. Keiichi really never dies in a good way. Am I not allowed to laugh?
Diagnosed with a severe mental disorder… Mental disorder, what!? But with so many terrible things happening, people will break. You must never forget that feeling. We all live because we have a heart to live with. If we forget that, we are just living puppets. Remember you're alive and have a soul.
The more minor of the twins always gets more popular, but to think it would still hold true. Maybe it's fate, or maybe coincidence. You're okay to think of watanagashi considering the suicide, though."
This is the end of the story related text. The rest is credits for the episode. I think this is written from the perspective of whatever is actually behind the Hinamizawa/Oyashiro curse. The first part, about making him a villain again was shown way back at the very start of the series before the title card of Onikakushi.
Tumblr media
""Higurashi: When They Cry" Serial Murder Novel Number 3: Tatarigoroshi A mysterious old man with the role of an extra yet still popular. He won't be doing much for a while.
I'm a little sleepy. Maybe I haven't been getting enough sleeping and gaming with all my heart. Or maybe I just want to play ragnarok online Oh, puritan, hah, hah, moe!
Scenario: Ryukishi07 Hello, I'm ryukishi07. It was a fierce battle this time, like it always is.
Partner in Crime: Yatazakura You really did a good job this time!! Let's put out the best stuff brothers can manage! (I might be wrong on this one?)
Scirpting: Yatazakura Thanks for everything again!
4U You're another one I always rely on. Thank you for everything you do."
Tumblr media
"BT Your kind encouragement encourages me. Thank you so much.
Scripting Language: Me finding this scripting language was how it began. I wouldn't be here today without it.
Still, I'm really sleepy. The fatigue of a thousand years as they say. I may be doing this for fun, it's hard on my body. But it's nothing as long as i can get your thoughts and reactions!
4U I took so much of your time, so I'm sorry I'm late again. Gotta go debug more"
Tumblr media
"BT You're another one i always rely on. Thank you for everything you do.
Production Yat Looks like he's got the hang of it. He was very fast on the clean up this time.
Graphics: Ryukishi07 Part of me wants a good artist, but having to trust someone else with it scares me too much (I can completely empathize with the creative idea of "only I can do this!)
Background location: Kameya Without your generous help, Higurashi would not exist. All those beautiful backgrounds are yours.
Yato Sakura Without your generous help"
Tumblr media
"Ryukishi07 Without your generous help
Tsubaki Hey, this is totally nepotism, isn't it? Well, let's put that off as a joke
LRRP: Kameya You are a god. Sorry fo the weird abbreviation LRRP. I look foward to working with you and Daisuke in the future.
Jika Thank you as always, to hru. ab it stuc kin ro, tho ugh if brother unit e we'll be invinicible! Let's do our best!"
Tumblr media
"Amamizu/Scarlet Thank you as always to hru.ab itstuc kin (The same thing is written for Amamizu and Scarlet here, and I admit I kind of gave up trying to figure out what's written there. "Thank you as always tohru? a bit stuck in?)
Music and SFX The Music studio Without beautiful music the world wouldn't turn. The main theme is important. It's a vital factor.
Dream Island Development Room Being able to mess with things from my house is a pretty huge plus.
Escateli~na Being able to mess with things from my house is a pretty huge plus."
no love for Koji. Awww.
Tumblr media
"Minigames: BT Thank you so much for alwasy submitting great minigames. Give me some advice when adjusting them. Personally, I'd rather tsubaki in a ruse(?) s picture not be excessive I wonder why he doesn't understand?"
I wonder if the original release way back in the day had minigames in it? Like the club activities are playable games maybe? I'm now envisioning a significantly worse version of this game existing because it has something like the fucking awful gambling minigames from a Leisure Suit Larry just crammed in there.
Tumblr media
"Homepage 07th Storming Party Still, I'm really sleepy. The fatigue of a thousand years as they say. I may be doing this for fun but it's hard on my body. But it's nothing as long as I can get your thoughts and reactions! Me finding this scripting language was I began. I wouldn't be here today without it.
Created by: Pride is fighting under your own flag. So I hope you understant why i don't want to "use my flag to make something weird. if you don't like it then raise a flag or two of your own." I hope this becomes a work to be proud of for life."
Tumblr media
"Directed by: I'm ryukishi07. The path here has been a long one. But we're only midway through! The real stuff is still to come! I'll work harder than ever!"
Tumblr media
Trying to decipher these and making sure I had them correct was a surprisingly annoying process. No one else on the entire rest of the internet seems to have bothered trying to decode what it all said. The steam forums especially were less than helpful. Just a bunch of people arguing six years ago about the veracity of what it says, and whether it counts as spoilers or MangaGamer "screwing with the plot." I do apologize for some of the attempts on my part basically just falling apart, but try as I might I just couldn't think of a way to make the letters available make any sort of coherent sense.
I mentioned it before, but I'm fairly positive that everything before the game credits is the entity behind the events of Higurashi remarking on the pawns they have available to toy with. Everything at the credits until the end title card there I'm sure was just Ryukishi07 having fun with it.
Tumblr media
Gonna be honest with you here, I liked it, but not quite as much as chapter two. A reddit post I saw while trying to decipher the credits bits summed it up best: "Keiichi is cringe."
Tumblr media
Gotta work towards a good ending. Can't just give it to your audience.
Tumblr media
Let the god child drink!
Tumblr media
Yeah, you're gonna have to address the body count of a thousand people eventually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*sad trombone* Although I must say I do like the idea of playing as a protagonist other than Keiichi. Let the lunkhead go do something else, it's Shion's time to shine.
Keiichi aside, I liked Chapter Three: Tatarigoroshi, it was a severly depressing read at points, but it did provide some interesting mysteries towards the end. Why don't the dead stay put in Hinamizawa, what is puppeting the bodies around, and for what purpose? Why in this particular go-around was there a deadly volcanic gas that killed everyone in the town shortly after Watanagashi? Who were the twenty that disappeared? Satoko and Teppei were certainly two of them, but who were the other eighteen? Is it the masterminds of the cult? What is the importance of the woman who died at the start of the chapter, and did she really have any importance to the plot? I know there was the implication she was involved with the Sonozaki crime syndicate, but overall her entire subplot just vanished towards the middle of this chapter. Who killed Rika and why did they do it in a way similar to the murdered woman at the start of the chapter?
This chapter does however lend greater strength to the supernatural killer angle. Deliberately so, I'd say, since Chapter Two: Watanagashi leaned more hevily on the human angle to justify the killings.
Also:
Tumblr media
"The shortest scenario," bullshit. This was just as lengthy as chapter two! It might seem shorter in my playthrough/readthrough, but that's only because I didn't want to be posting a bunch of screenshots and discussions about domestic violence. I felt it would be tonally at odds with my often lighthearted comments about the VN.

i think rosa is so interesting in contrast to teppei in higurashi, like they both exist as horrible parents/parental figures who are known abusers who are reported, but in both cases despite the completely different circumstances cws is unable/unwilling to to do anything about it. rosa presents herself as the good, sweet and kind aunt to the other cousins, my first impression was that she was the most trustworthy of the adults in umineko, until of course the entire illusion is swept away. she's able to use her class position to avoid consequences, even when she's visibly abusive to maria in in front of and even attempts to assault a social worker. teppei on the other hand is very visibly rude and abrasive, someone who very much seems like he would be an abuser, but due to the specific conditions of hinamizawa where he's shunned for being a memeber of the family that supported the dam, due to their lack of wealth, he's able to get away with rampant abuse due to the fact that nobody wants to get involved with the houjous - because he is able to hide his behavior in front of cws. i dont really have any further analysis at the moment i just think the contrast between them is very striking, and both portrayals are both very hard hitting because there isnt a singular face of what abusive family members look like, and i think the way class intersects with both of their cases is very intentional writing

If you're wondering why some seemingly more obvious choices are missing, I only picked characters with next to no redeeming qualities in their respective novels. Literally there to be sacks of dogshit from start to finish with personalities pushing how fucked up and evil they are.

Propaganda for Dawn:
Musically, it's wonderful! A beautiful dialogue between a piano and a small orchestra. Some highlights (reference video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4Vd1350-a8)
Have you notice how the piano closes the score with the same high notes as the introduction? It gives me a sense of tragedy and unscapability.
Around 2:01, the orchestra takes the melody instead of the piano. There is also a keyshift, giving new energy for the track, and leading for the big climax during the chorus!
The piano descent at 2:34 and 4:16 gives me chills!
Also the piano line closing the chorus 2:42 is super elegant! I wish I could play that ^^
Storywise, the first time it is played is when """Mion""" tells Keiichi and Rena """the truth""" at the end of Watanagashi-hen. And the track gives an incredible sense of gravity and solemnity to that scene.
It is also played in Tatarigoroshi-hen, when Keiichi asks Mion to get rid of Teppei Houjou. Still reminds of the solemnity of the Sonozaki clan, and shows how Mion can behaves like the family leader.
(I think it's also played at the end of Tatarigoroshi-hen, at the confrontation between Keiichi and Satoko, but I'm not sure)
I remember fondly when I first heard it. I loved the scene, and fell in love with Dawn. I was so eager to hear it again! Thus, when I heard it in Tatarigoroshi-hen, I created a savepoint just to hear it when I wanted ^^
I think it's my favorite track (yes, more than Dai tracks!) I love the music, I love the Sonozaki clan, please for it!!!
Oh wow, I love the song but I'd never thought about it this much before, this is interesting

Urgh i cant play anymore today but well this is a worrying situation like from my perspective bcs im not sure at all how itll end up... Teppei seems a little sick of it already so he might leave BUT he might also snap n KILL HER i still think this somehow. And also? We havent seen his pov before maybe he just thinks like that it might not be a sign of anything working... Im glad keiichi seems more strong willed obviously #growth n stuff n im sure theyll get this sorted out. I think it wants me to believe that sonozaki family is in their way but i dont think so... Cos like teppeis a houjou too???? Wouldnt u want to get rid of him lol its not like its someone theyd want to protect thats abusing satoko?? So yeah im not super worried about that. But it might be trying to show what happens when nobodys killing oryuo (see shions chapters) similarly to well teppei (see chapter 6) like its just events are preventing other events in other worlds and the pieces just wont fit in a way that EVERYONES happy u know. So idk. Interesting. Still waiting for that satoko pov. Im sorry satoko again i think i blamed u for the timeloop again... SO RUDE OF ME. Didnt i do the same shit back in some other chapter i was like ooh satoko behind the slaughter (i dont even remember which slaughter...) but shes just a girl. Ugh ugh ugh. Keiichi rena shion mion rika cmoon cmoon lets handle this. oh also wataganashi should be exciting (auction shenanigans maybe) yayyy

JUST finished Higurashi Chapter 3: Tatarigoroshi
Spoilers below 030
WTFFFF??? HUH
GGJHJGJG BECOME THE CURSE MY GUY
Ok ok so more coherent thoughts:
Coach has grown on me a bit but I still won’t stan him you don’t talk to (or about) kids like that sir 😤👎
I really liked the scary moments, like the one Tip where it read off child abuse statistics and it just had a b/w Satoko looking dead inside at the corner like ACK
And the prevalence of the extra footsteps… creepy and cool and I like how it’s mentioned at the very end. But I. I’m still not sure what it meannsss XD
At first I assumed it was alternate Keiichi (guy who went to festival)’s steps, but idk if him and his happy life would have been at places like the bridge.
OK and the freaking…. Cursing people to die?! Was Ooyashiro-sama like “nooo you CANT kill Teppei Houjou but you can kill everyone else with curses 👍” (OBSESSED it makes me think of an OC I have HKGKF-)
Or is that really the punishment for murder… legit everyone dying GJGJF
Oh and poor Satoko!! She was the same as Keiichi near the end- wanting to kill the demon possessing her friend… reminds me of Onikakushi where Keiichi kills both Rena and Mion, both in self defense and to kill The Demons ya know. I loooove parallels like this 030
I might need to re-read the beginning tho, cuz I’m not sure what body they discovered at the beginning. I’m probably missing something obvious HKGKG-
But yeah. Scary. Pretty cool- it feels like the plot could work as a stand alone horror story, but definitely works best here, to progress the lore!!
Dead people need to start staying dead I swear FHFJG
But that’s interesting- in Watanagashi they mention the corpses of people who people saw after the date of their death- but the uncle had no body at all, so I’m trying to guess what is happening
I guess it is possible for Keiichi to have done something he shouldn’t have, and ended up in a parallel world- who knows XD
I’d still say I liked the other two more but I still really enjoyed this one 030
