Steel Structures of All Shapes and Sizes
Steel is the world’s most important engineering and construction material; it is an alloy of iron and carbon (2%), also containing manganese (1%) and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, oxygen, and sulphur. It is low cost and has a high tensile strength which makes it the best choice for building infrastructure, erecting buildings, and manufacturing tools, ships, trains, cars, weapons, and electrical appliances. Australia is currently a major steel producer, with many manufacturers and steel rigging companies setting up shop all over the country.
Why Steel Is the Material of Choice for Many Applications
Steel is part of our everyday life and our surroundings would look completely different without it. It is one of the staple inventions that have shaped the world we live in and played a major role in the second Industrial Revolution when an improvement was made in the production of steel, making it lighter, cheaper, and stronger than iron. But what makes steel the best choice for such a variety of purposes? Here is what you need to know about this amazing alloy:
Steel has different “buildability” degrees
The successful construction of steel structures depends on decisions made during the design process of the alloy. Buildability is influenced by four major design factors: repetition and standardisation of structural components, achievable tolerances, frame type (brace frames vs. continuous frames), and floor systems.
Planning for construction starts early
Planning for construction should be considered at the very beginning of the design process, as there are three planning factors that affect the buildability of steel structures: practical erection sequences (the location of both temporary and permanent bracing systems), simplicity of assembly, and logical trade sequences. Paying attention to design and planning minimises the need for costly and potentially dangerous onsite remedial work.
Automation is used on a wide scale in steel manufacturing these days
Automation is used everywhere in the world and in the steel industry in general. Incorporated by steel erection Brisbane manufacturers and also by rigging services in Brisbane as it significantly improves and simplifies the process of cutting and bending mental. Automation makes production operations more efficient and keeps errors at a minimum. Steel rigging Brisbane as it is today, has been made possible with a lower cost of human resources, owing to automation in sheet metal fabrication and rigging industries.
3D printing can be used for the steel fabrication process
The method is very different from the traditional steel fabrication process, and a printer produces a metal prototype as opposed to stamping and bending in order to produce a required design.
Steel can be recycled
Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world, with a recycling rate of more than 60% globally. However, the amount of recycled steel is about 40% of the total steel produced, as more steel is produced than is scrapped.
There are multiple types of steel
Modern steel is manufactured through varied combinations of alloy metals, in order to fulfil a variety of purposes:
- Carbon steel – made of iron and carbon and accounting for 90% of steel production;
- Low alloy steel – has an improved hardenability of its thick sections through the addition of other elements, such as molybdenum, manganese, chromium, and nickel;
- High strength low alloy steel – is added other elements, such as manganese, to provide additional strength to the material without raising its price too much.
- Stainless steel – contains approximately 11% chromium, which prevents the iron from rusting and ensures heat-resistant properties.
Steel offers major advantages compared to other engineering and construction materials
Steel is reusable, endlessly recyclable and is flexible in combination with other materials. It provides more usable open space because it is light and strong and requires fewer beams. Less material also has a positive impact on the environment and helps with saving resources. Moreover, steel is very durable, allowing for fast on-site build for prefabricated buildings, and is earthquake resistant due to its ductility.
What is steel used for?
Factories
There are countless possibilities for using steel in factory buildings; these edifices need to be durable and resilient but also cost-effective. Steel provides a strong, stiff frame for manufacturing buildings and is commonly used to reinforce concrete and add tensile strength to it. Steel is also found in non-structural applications in buildings, such as heating and cooling equipment, and internal fixtures and fittings like rails, shelving, and stairs are also made of steel.
Infrastructure
Steel is commonly used in transport networks to build rail track, bridges, tunnels, and transportation buildings like airports, train stations, and fuelling stations. Underground pipelines distributing water and gas are also made of steel. The increasing need for building and infrastructure worldwide could not be met without the use of steel, which is crucial for future sustainability.
Roller coasters
Steel is deeply involved in the history or roller coasters, an exhilarating thrill that we can enjoy due to this versatile and affordable material. It all started in the 1870s, when a mining company in Pennsylvania, USA, adapted its railroad to provide amusement rides to thrill-seekers. Roller coasters became very popular in the 20th century, with a drop in popularity after world wars 1 and 2. However, the use of steel tube rails which enabled the construction of taller, faster, and safer roller coasters, led to a comeback of this beloved amusement park attraction. Today, 96% of the world’s roller coasters are made of steel.
Shopping centres
The use of steelwork, including external applications, made it possible to achieve all kinds of architectural solutions and creations, and steel can be found in various places within any retail building. For example - steel piling systems, steel cores for stability, secondary steelwork for side rails for the walls and purlins for the roof, etc. Steel has a series of attributes that make it ideal for retail construction: speed of construction, structure cost economy, obtaining lightweight constructions, sustainability, long spans for flexible use of space, and reliable and robust structural performance.
Kids playgrounds
Most playgrounds are made either from steel or timber, and the former has some major advantages compared to the latter: easier to customise through the use of virtually any colour, longevity (15-20 years if properly maintained), low maintenance, and durability.

How Does The Hot-Dip Galvanization Process Work?
Hot-dip galvanizing is the procedure of immersing steel or iron in a bath of molten zinc to make a corrosion-resistant, multi-layered covering of zinc metal and zinc-iron alloy. While the steel is dipped in the zinc, a metallurgical reaction happens between the iron in the molten zinc and the steel. This reaction is a diffusion process, thus the coating becomes perpendicular to all planes forming a uniform thickness all through the part.

On Steel Railings
Usually, whenever metal railings are used, steel is material of choice because of its strength.
Carbon Steel
Very affordable
Low resistance to corrosion
Coating is necessary to prevent corrosion; most popular method is powder coating, allowing for many different colours
Requires regular maintenance to look its best, to fix scratches etc.
Suitable for indoor use, where there is minimal exposure to the elements; not suitable for indoor environments where there is a lot of usage (e.g. hospitals, airports)
Contains a small amount (~ <2%) of carbon to be stronger
Galvanised Steel
Very affordable
Higher resistance to corrosion, however, resistance is dependent on galvanising techniques. Usually, hot-dip galvanised is more resistant than cold-dip galvanised steel
Galvanising prevents corrosion, could be paint coated after galvanising to colours of choice; when painting, an epoxy primer with anti-corrosive properties could be applied first.
Suitable for indoor and outdoor use; not suitable for indoor usage with aesthetical concerns as welding joints and galavanising marks may not be pleasing
304-Grade Stainless Steel
Affordable
Higher resistance to corrosion
Coating is not necessary, but could have coating of paint or powder; non coating finish could be satin to finer finishes including mirror finish (satin finish is easier to maintain, mirror finish offers ultimate corrosion resistance)
Suitable for indoor application, and outdoor environments that are not overly harsh or extreme; as long as not too much salt/chlorine, outdoor is fine
Contains chromium (>10.5%) to be considered stainless steel, 304 is 18% chromium and 8% nickel
316-Grade Stainless Steel
More expensive
Greatest resistance to corrosion here
Coating is not necessary, but could have coating and finishes depending on look required
Suitable for outdoor application and harsh environments
Contains slightly higher nickel content and 2% molybdenum to further strengthen corrosion resistance
How corrosion is prevented:
When the chromium content of steel interacts with air, it oxidizes to form a thin, extremely stable layer of protective atoms that stops further oxidation (rust) from occurring. In highly chlorinated areas (swimming pools & coastal locations), chromium may not always create protective layer as quickly.

What is Hot Dip Galvanising?
An Introduction:
Galvanisation is an electrochemical process of protecting steel with a noble metal (zinc or iron) coating but remember there is a difference between galvanisation and hot-dip galvanizing. In galvanisation, zinc coating is different from that of paint as the paint is layered on steel against corrosion but zinc protects the scratched areas and edges too. This protective coating of zinc stands against the corrosive forces attacking steel in corrosive environments.
A detailed note on the process of galvanisation:
The process of galvanisation involves the following series of steps:
Degreasing → Pickling → Fluxing → Galvanising → Double Dipping Processes → centrifuge process
Degreasing:
Most of the time the organic surfaces get rusted because of crude particles. In this step of the process, the caustic solution is used to remove oil, lacquers, and paints from the surface of the steel.
Pickling:
Pickling or alternatively known as acid cleaning is the second step of cleaning mill scale and rust from the steel. The most common acids used in this step are hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid.
Fluxing:
Now, the above cleaned acid is inserted in zinc ammonium chloride solution. This flux solution is operated at 50-70°C and it separates toxic oxides from the surface of the steel.
Galvanising:
The main step of galvanisation involves the immersion of the above-prepared item in molten zinc galvanising bath. Hence the steel surface is completely covered with zinc/iron alloy.  The steel is left in the bath until the temperature reaches to 445°C to 465°C. At the removal of steel from the bath, quench solution having an inhibitor is used to cool zinc to avoid oxidation.  Later, Supply Onsite Welding Gold Coast does the venting and designing of the item covered with molten zinc. Edges are completely sealed and welded to protect the steel from potential corrosive forces.
Centrifuge Process:
Some fasteners are used into perforated cylindrical steel baskets at the early steps of galvanisation. After removal from molten zinc, these baskets are rotated for 15 to 20 seconds in a centrifuge to get rid of excessive zinc and to smoothen the surface.
Double-dipping process:
Double dipping is an alternative process for galvanising long, deep, and wide items. Half of the item is left in a bath of molten zinc at one time and after cooling the second part is galvanised in molten zinc.
Hot-dip galvanising (HDG):
HDG is a similar concept related to galvanising and we can define is as a process of protecting fabricated steel from corrosion with a metal mostly zinc. HDG forms a thick and strong metallurgical coating of zinc to cover of steel from corrosive environmental actions. Cathodic action further protects the damages in the coat of zinc and Hot Dip Galvanising Brisbane is protecting steel for the long term. The process of HDG involves the following steps:
Surface preparation → Galvanising → Inspection
Surface Preparation:
The fabricated steel is placed in an easily lifted position as it reaches Riggers and Dogman Gold Coast. Overhead cranes of Gold Coast’s Best Crane Services are used to hang the fabricated steel in a lifted position. Three steps degreasing, pickling, and fluxing as done above in the galvanising process are used for cleaning the steel. Degreasing cleans dust, organic impurities, and grease. The acidic pickling bath removes toxic oxides and mill scale. In the third step, fluxing will detach oxides will form a protective coating on steel to protect from further oxidation. Proper surface preparation is an essential step for HDG as zinc do not attach to unclean steel.
Galvanising:
After cleansing, the steel is dipped in the molten zinc solution at a high temperature of 830F. The steel forms intermetallic layers of zinc-iron and a pure zinc layer at the outer side.
Inspection:
The final step involves the complete inspection of the coating. The quality of zinc coating is determined through minute inspection.
 Use of Hot Dip Galvanising:
1. Low cost:
The price of hot-dip galvanising is smaller for certain purposes than using traditional coatings. The explanation is simple as painting is highly labour-intensive relative to galvanising. This is a method of the factory that is highly mechanised and closely regulated. Hot Dip Galvanising Brisbane offers you the lowest price and quality galvanising services.
2. Requires low maintenance:
Galvanising produces an easy to clean material. This can provide more than seventy years of maintenance-free life. This also depends on the condition in which it is being utilised. It is clear when monitoring finally becomes essential. No complicated procedures for the preparation are required. It is highly beneficial for the construction machinery.
3. Low cost of maintenance:
Limited start-up costs and long service life allow galvanising the most reliable and inexpensive way to secure steel over extended periods. The advantages of no repairs or longer maintenance periods include fewer access issues in remote areas. Where buildings are clustered tightly together or, where security limitations such as power pylons are in place.
4. Highly reliable:
It is a fairly transparent, quick, and tightly regulated operation. The layers of the developed coatings are normal, reliable, and described simply. Among the few coatings which are strictly specified by a British standard, is hot-dip galvanizing. Our Hot Dip Galvanising Brisbane team is works diligently to meet all standards.
5. Requires low time for application:
An entire protective coating can be implemented in hours. Moreover, it can take a week to have a complex paint system.
6. High quality and thickness of the galvanized layer:
The hot-dip industry generates a coating that is metallurgically applied to the material. Every other fabrication technique has this function and as a result, galvanised steel. The galvanised surface offer by Hot Dip Galvanising Brisbane seems to have the highest tolerance to mechanical injury during handling, storage, transportation, and construction. An important consideration is when steelworks are to be transported around the world.
7. Three-dimensional coverage of material:
Since it is made by soaking steel into molten zinc, all the aspects of the steel's surface are painted-indoors, outdoors. Moreover, the team is trained to tight corners and small gaps that would be difficult to cover otherwise. The coating begins to build up at critical edges and corners. The material instead does not hollow out as is often the case with rubbed, brushed, and other coated adhesives.
8. Aids faster construction:
Fully prepared galvanised steel aids in faster construction. There is no planning, painting, touch-up, or examination of the surface at the site is required. Moreover, insulation of the steel may begin immediately resulting in speeding construction time.
