Meet My OCs masterpost!

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these and I’ve gotten a lot of new followers and several new OCs in that time. Enough now that I should probably put them under a read more. OCs are divided up by main setting that they fall under - even though all my Fallout content takes place in its own ‘verse (distinct from the canon Fallout verse in that there are horses, among other differences), the various coasts tend to be pretty separate. Without further ado:

Fallen Knight

Fallen Knight is a longform fic that is currently and irregularly updating. It takes place in the Commonwealth in 2287-2289, featuring a mix of canon characters (often modified to my own convenience) and OCs. It can be found here. 

Christopher Farris, aka the Fallen Knight (Lone Wanderer)

Christopher is my lone wanderer that I ported to Fallout 4. He is (currently) a Brotherhood of Steel Knight alongside Paladin Danse. He is the main character of Fallout: Fallen Knight. Kristine Finch, Minuteman General

Kristine is my Minuteman OC and the General of the Minutemen. Under her leadership, they have worked to make the commonwealth safer by uniting various settlements to exchange resources and provide mutual defense. Brave New World is a collection of various OCs who end up in the Mojave wasteland at the same time, in around 2289 or so. While no unifying narrative yet exists, I am planning some ficlets/short form fic around these OCs. 

Ace (Courier 6)

Ace is my courier, and a member of the Great Khans. Still a teenager when Bitter Springs happened, he was separated from the rest of the Khans and spent his remaining teenage years doing odd jobs around the Mojave and avoiding the encroaching NCR, culminating in a fateful job for the Mojave Express. He now finds himself down one eye, hunting the Mojave for Benny and the platinum chip. Content for him can be found at #ace in the hole.

Sophia Mobius

Sophia is a Followers medic turned disciple of Doctor Mobius after a chance encounter with a crashed satellite sent her to the Big MT. She later traveled to the Sierra Madre casino with Arcade and Veronica to hunt down and stop Father Elijah. She is now working with the Veronica and Christine to convince Brotherhood members to leave, smuggling out technology if possible, to assist the Followers of the Apocalypse. Martin Goldberg aka the Silver Canary (Reclaimer)

Martin Goldberg, known better as the Silver Canary, was a pre-war vigilante and the inspiration for the Silver Shroud. As a staunch anti-fascist and anti-capitalist, he had several encounters with the movers and shakers of American industry, notably Robert House, whose suite Martin broke into while he was visiting a West Virginia plant. Upon learning about Vault-Tec’s plans for Vault 76, he broke into Vault Tec University, changing the list of vault residents to a list of random West Virginia citizens, as well as himself. 

While in the Vault, Emmerane Black, a moody young woman born in the vault, declared herself his nemesis. When they left the vault in 2102, he learned of this, and instead decided to take her under his wing, forcibly adopting the young supervillain. Though they clashed often at first, they quickly found they had more in common than they realized, and soon teamed up to take on certain targets - most notably the Brotherhood of Steel. 

At some point in the following years, both Martin and Emmerane ghoulified, and in the late 2200s, Martin traveled west, to find his old nemesis, Robert House. He now haunts the areas around Vegas, a mysterious spectre doling out justice to the wicked. Caroline Keene, Ranger of the Wastes

Caroline Keene was a park ranger in a firewatch tower in Monongahela National Forest when the bombs fell. After a few days of quiet introspection, her and some of her fellow rangers agreed to make their way to the nearest town to find survivors, slowly making their way to Flatwoods and then Morgantown to join the Responders. 

After helping the Responders stabilize Appalachia in the wake of the Great War and faction infighting that followed, Caroline traveled west, continuing to help out those in need as he crossed the country that had once been America. During this time, she began to ghoulify; though initially and understandably distraught, a community of ghouls in what was once Texas helped her to accept her condition. Upon arriving in the Mojave, she found that her reputation as the “Ranger of the Wastes” preceded her, and she was recruited by the desert rangers, though she left again when they were incorporated with the NCR. Now, she has settled in the Mojave, starting a brahmin and bighorner ranch with her partners, and helping shelter, teach, and raise lost and disaffected youth in the Mojave. The King of the Road (Chosen One)

The King of the Road was once the Chosen One of Arroyo, but became disatisfied with the duties of ruling and the pressures of being the tribe’s chosen one. In 2244, he left Arroyo, wandering New California as a drifter. He abanoned his name and title, choosing instead to take the name of the King of the Road as his renown as a drifter grew. He ghoulified due to his exposure to radiation over the years, but took to the change rather well. He continued to travel the roads of New California, eventually finding his way to the Mojave wasteland as the NCR did. Content for him can be found at #king of the road (when I make it).

Angelia King

Angelina King, the leader of the Nightstalkers, a gang in the Mojave in 2289. When Ace drives the NCR out of the Mojave, she at first believes that she will be allowed to operate with relative impunity; however, when the NCR supply trains stop coming from the west (no longer needing to fight a war that has been lost), she starts hitting caravans first and then larger settlements, carving her way across the Mojave towards New Vegas. Hannah Alton is my PC for our Fallout: New Orleans campaign run by and using the PBTA hack Powered by the Nuclear Apocalypse made by @corsairesix. Hannah is a “raider” from a gang called the Robbin’ Hoods, a gang dedicated to stealing from New Orleans’ ghoul aristocrats and redistributing their wealth to the town they’re based in. Cyberpunk 2077 Thoughts

Having perused Dark Horse Books’ The World of Cyberpunk 2077 over the past few days, I’ve gotten a better feel for the various basic hooks that structure V’s inception as a protagonist. The short of it is the Polish wizards are on the right path to nailing Pondsmith’s treatment the same way they nailed Sapkowski’s works.

Consider the following as half a brain dump, half a series of prospective spoilers, and also half projection, so either skip this, find some other entry to read, or come back to this come late November.

I know I mentioned three halves, but it’s late and I don’t give a shit.

I’m serious - DO NOT PRESS ON IF YOU’RE THE TYPE TO BLOW A GASKET IF YOU’RE INADVERTANTLY SPOILED. 

The latest Night City Wire as of August exposed three incipient “life paths”, or starting branches of V’s path. I’ll tackle my personal narrative approaches to them in the order of my choosing.

Nomads: CP2077 is set in a world where much of what we understand to define a family has been blown up, tossed around by climate change and nuclear fire and then stitched back together using grit, resourcefulness and the last dying embers of human decency. Nomads are less a group of people defined by blood relations and more a cadre of individuals that share something more significant than mere genes. It might be a common history, a set of shared hardships, a yen for similar automotive and engineering-related projects - whatever it is, that something pulls people together in ways Corpo rats and street kids will never experience.

This seems to define even the average Nomad’s degree of education. Surprisingly, Nomads are the most well-read group in Coronado Bay’s greater area, some caravans reportedly including entire RVs packed with books. Nomads generationally elect teachers and record-keepers and seem to care for those cultural remnants of the old world, before Pondsmith’s paranoid alternate sixties kicked off more than a century’s worth of technological progression and rampant dehumanization. To a Night City native, a Nomad’s speech patterns appear precious and uselessly florid, while they might appear almost normal to us - maybe slightly touched by the fact that Grandpa Joe or whatever really wanted you to have your Greek classics down before you were old enough to repair your first CH00H2 carburetor on your own.

That new, mega-clustered version of family matters immensely to the Nomads. You identify to yours the same way Orcs in Shadow of War might refer to their clan, or the same way a Scottish clan might design specific visual cues identifying its members. In normal circumstances, Nomads live, thrive and die in service to the clan - and the opening segment for V’s Nomad origins suggests that something happened to his clan. They’re gone, or so the narration says, without going into further detail. Is V responsible? We don’t currently know. As it stands, however, he is a lone Nomad in a clan of one, and soon finds himself pushed out of the Californian wastes and into Night City’s neon-drenched streets.

Seeing this, I considered the narration as an admission of guilt on V’s part. He feels responsible, and hopes that grinding his way to success will in some way atone for what he’s done. Consequently, my Nomad V would be as gruff as could be, but as moral and upstanding as the setting allows. He considers himself as having been invested with an example to set, and would intend to set his sights on more than just filthy lucre. Honest filthy lucre is what matters to him, if that concept even is possible: he might deal in unsavory types and illicit activities, but he always does so with a certain moral rectitude - as a tough and gruff, lean and stringy type you can occasionally catch in his battered Thornton pick-up truck with his feet up on the dashboard and a dog-eared copy of Plato’s Republic in hand. Jackie honestly wonders how he can put up with that Greek pendejo’s endless words and the lack of scrolling animations, while V keeps his Kiroshi optics’ News ticker locked onto grassroots Leftist RSS feeds that stoke a bit of an ignored Rockerboy ethos in him. Quoting Marx in Night City might feel like trying to teach lab rats in the finer points of string theory, but it at least feels genuine to him, compared to the predigested sociopolitical pap Militech, Arasaka and their ilk are more than happy to spew on the airwaves. 

There’s a lot to be pissed off about in Richard Night’s failed utopia, a lot of fat cats to gut and buildings to burn. Still, he leaves the glowering act and the churning rage to Johnny Silverhand’s imprinted ghost. Being more of a down-low, gun-toting choomba than a classic Street Samurai, Vincent “V” Carson thinks first and strikes second.

Vinnie isn’t much for electric guitars and anarchy in the UK, much less in the Free State of Southern California; but he does love the occasional Leonard Cohen ballad or the occasional shot of Johnny Cash’s melancholy. Having picked up something of a Northern Texas drawl while cruising, he might feel like Harry Dresden’s Good Ol’ Boy cousin, magic tricks here pushed aside in favor of a measure of dermal plating and a good ol’ fashioned twelve-gauge and revolver combo. Not being much of a techno-fetishist, he considers his optics and his skull jack as being begrudging concessions to an era that looks down on fully “ganic” types. Having grown up with TV serials and the occasional visor-based Braindance all depicting cyberpsychosis as something vile that utterly dehumanizes its sufferers, he’s naturally wary around anyone who seems a little too giddy with the prospect of taking a few scalpels to perfectly decent muscles and bones.

His Thornton is where most of his Eddies go, and yes, he’s named his truck Suzie. Suzie’s done right by him, and he’ll do right by her - unless someone else with a pretty smile and a working moral compass makes him swoon.

Street Kids: if you weren’t taught on the highways or in corporate arcologies, odds are you became a positive blip in an otherwise grim statistic, one of the myriad fucked-up kids raised by other fucked-up kids with more seniority than you. With no roads and paid-for nannies, you survived off of grifts, grit, violence, deceit, smarts and gumption - and that, in its own screwball way, creates its own blood ties. You’re wise by Heywood’s standards - streetwise, that is - and you speak the back-alleys’ lingua franca of threats, insinuation and casual intimidation like no other.

If only Jackie hadn’t fingered that Rayfield, huh? This beaut could’ve been paydirt! Well, at least for a week or so, judging by the fact that hundreds of car thefts are reported across Night City on a daily basis. At least, Dean - who also goes as “V” - got to make a new friend while out in the pokey, and managed to shake a few proverbial trees... They’ve got a short-lease in with Trauma Team’s frequency and could maybe hook themselves up with a sweet finder’s fee for anyone who’s on the verge of death at the hands of the city’s Scavengers...

Little does V know, that’s selling Trauma Team as well as their clients painfully short. Shows of gratitude don’t mean anything if you’re not packing the right social status. He barely remembers his birth parents as it is, and grew up the fifth grubby prospect of one of the Valentinos’ “school clubs” (hence the nickname) - where the points of study refer to the proper observances to be held in Jesus Malaverde’s presence, intensive Chicano and Spanish immersion, as well as the handling of common types of weaponry.

Vincent and Dean would be likely to shoot one another, if placed in the same room. One clings onto nearly-lost value systems, while the other commodifies what can be discarded like so much flesh - only inasmuch as his efforts to pacify his unofficial five or six abuelas force him to forego extensive modifications. His knives and wrist-mounted data port are his main tools of the trade, although Dean keeps his hacking creds along the bare minimum. Why bother, when melting an ATM’s ICE wall and whacking the cops with a baseball bat is all you need? There’s a type of gun for nearly anything else, if someone knows where to look...

Dean has no last name, and is consequently registered as “Dean Smith” in the city’s Census records. That doesn’t suggest, however, that he wouldn’t want to make one for himself. As he’s less focused on the city’s legends than on its kingmakers and pawn-movers, Dexter DeShawn strikes him as someone to emulate, watch and learn from - all with a decent degree of caution.

Being on top matters a little less to him than eventually pulling Heywood’s stings. With a little fear and a lot of persistence, Dean “V.” Smith knows that one day, he won’t go hungry on a weeknight. To that end, he’s certainly a hearty eater, here paired with extensive free-weight training regimens and the use of anabolic stimulants. Oh, sure, he’ll speak of family and blood like the best soldier festooned in Santa Muerte visual codices, but his friend Jackie’s got a mind like a slow and steady steel trap.

Either Dean blows his new fellow Street Samurai out of the pond, or he does. Unlike Jackie, however, Dean isn’t realistic about it. Friendships are a rare gift in Heywood, if not the rest of Night City, and Dean’s convinced that Jackie could conceivably look past his final betrayal.

Corpo: nowadays, we’re mostly familiar with the idea of one-percenters creating a bubble of affluence for themselves. Boarding schools, private villas, prebooked vacations across the globe’s priciest spots, access to the hottest trends on the minute of their inception - what this tends to forego is the level of social disconnect that’s required in order to stay relevant. We’re only just waking up to the consequences of letting an aging, crusty first-generation Yuppie be crowned the ruler of the free world, and even someone who’s behind on their Bret Easton Ellis could tell you that Donald J. Trump is a sociopath and a narcissist.

Take that mindset, and cultivate it into an ethos that’s taught to children from a very early age - children who live, eat, shit and breathe in accordance with their parent corporation’s tenets. The more placid, mid-tier lifers in the genre are called sararimen, in reference to William Gibson’s use of the term to designate low-level company workers in Chiba City. A bit like Shenzhen’s factory workers and execs, everything in a corpo’s life is in service to the corporation.

In Night City, as of 2077, two major players have installed this culture of total obedience in their roster. Their names are Militech and Arasaka. One is a juggernaut in the field of military-grade personal defence, the other has a wider grasp and reach, but is more fragile. Arasaka owes that fragility to the last fifty years having involved its re-establishment and reconstruction. Fifty years ago, Night City’s Corpo Plaza was blasted open by a thermonuclear discharge that sent the Japanese giant packing. Our gal Vivian knows this. She knows this, because Vivian “V.” Banks lives two lives.

In one of them, she’s a lean and hungry Junior Executive in Arasaka’s Counter-Intel division. In that line of work, you either fuck someone’s prospects or protect your own, or ensure that no up-and-comer just out of the company’s Law School program manages to push you off the board. She knows full well that in centuries past, corpo-speak was made up of mild euphemisms that at best referred to destroying a rival’s prospects or lifelihood. Taking a life was something that required careful deliberation, especially when tossing a fat severance bonus into an aging CFO’s three-piece pockets and letting your erstwhile rival snort cocaine off of the rolling hips of Tahitian dancers was so much cheaper...

Nowadays, zeroing someone is commonplace.

You’re born for Arasaka, and chances are you’ll die for Arasaka just the same. Viv’s killed, lied, cheated and even stole her way to her position, remorse being this vaguely churning sense of coldness in her gut that keeps one-night stands coming in and out of her bedroom. She only remembers her parents as being credit-chip enablers and personal enhancement drug addicts, cutting ties with them so completely on the day of her official hiring that it felt more like a tacit understanding.

On most days, sex and booze keep the cold at bay. On most days, Vivian Banks is a class-act of a sociopath. The stronger she gets, however, and the more paranoid her targets become - which reinforces her own paranoia. Before long, playing the part of one of Arasaka’s several poisonous flowers won’t work anymore.

Unfortunately, she trusts no-one. No Fixer could put her in contact with any hacker she’d trust, no rando fresh off the street with a retro-tinted National Arms plinker would satisfy her. To climb up the ranks and maybe share tea with Old Man Saburo himself, she needs a spotless performance record. She needs skills.

More importantly, she needs a reputation. That means leaving Arasaka Tower and mingling with the experts in their own field - and it means filling out her back book of successful hits. The drinks at the Afterlife are decent enough, but what she’s after is an official in.

If she can get to Rogue, or maybe even hook up with a ripperdoc not bought and paid for by the company, she might be able to score both new skills and increased performance...

If it were as simple as slitting Janet’s throat in HR and diving her way to an orgiastic performance review quite innocently left on the department’s server, she would’ve done that already. Viv is my obvious Pure Stealth build candidate, my main-line hacker and would-be engineer with a thing for black power skirts and designer offensive augments.

With that said, we’re months ahead of schedule, all the good shit’s already come out, so we’re stuck playing the waiting game...

Wallace Neff – Hollywood’s Original Architect To the Stars!

One of the first architects for the Hollywood stars was Wallace Neff, who designed a number of Southern California’s most important homes including the Pickfair estate for Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, the Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston of the 1920s. Pickfair was the first Beverly Hills celebrity mansion, the longtime hot spot for Hollywood’s movers and shakers, had the first residential swimming pool in Los Angeles, and was compared to the White House by Life magazine.

Although Pickfair was demolished in 1990, Neff had a long home-designing career from the 1920s until his death in 1982. He is often credited with creating the California style of homes with vaulted ceilings, courtyards, lush landscapes and lots of glass. Neff was a favorite of celebrities who bought his homes including Charlie Chaplin, Darryl Zanuck, Bob Newhart, Madonna and Diane Keaton.

One of his later designs was the Straus House built in 1970 for Macy’s department store heir Robert Straus. Restored, expanded, and modernized over a 10-year period, the Straus House is now for sale. Previously priced at $32.75 million in 2017, the listing agency has not yet publicized the new price, it is only available by request.

Eye catching with a black circular driveway paired against the stark white of the building, the Straus House is located in the small and highly regarded equestrian-and-seaside community of Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara County’s Montecito neighborhood.

Behind the stylized wrought-iron gates that open to a courtyard, the hacienda-style house spans 14,000 square feet in an “H” floor plan on one floor and big ocean views. The center section is a massive gathering room with a vaulted ceiling of floor-to-ceiling glass facing the Pacific with the Neff-designed raised fireplace.

There are five bedrooms and five baths divided between the two wings, a completely refurbished chef’s kitchen, a dining room with ocean views, theater, wine cellar, and a den with fireplace. One of the home’s most interesting features is the guest house that is under the back lawn’s first level, which leaves the view completely unobstructed. Many homeowners in Hope Ranch are horse owners who enjoy its 27 miles of riding trails.

Mr. Strauss had previously been living in a home in Bel Air that Neff designed in the 1920s, and they liked it so much that they hired him for their Montecito home. Almost 50 years later, the current owner worked closely with the Santa Barbara historical committee on all aspects of preserving the integrity of the design and inspiration of Neff’s work while simultaneously creating an estate of comfort and luxury.

Montecito, sometimes referred to as “Beverly Hills North,” has surged in both price and popularity in recent years, the hometown for big stars including Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres. With its mild climate, world-class beaches and natural beauty stretching from the ocean to the mountains, Montecito has been a popular backdrop for the movie industry with over 1,000 movies filmed there since the early 1900s. According to local real estate agents, Montecito home prices have more than doubled in the last few years.

You were six years old when your dad’s job relocated him to their headquarters in California. He had taken this opportunity to bring his family with him in order for them to have a brighter future. Being new in town, you didn’t know anybody and had no friends. During an uneventful warm sunday morning, you went outside your new home and saw your parents helping the movers unload the truck containing your new furniture. Already missing your old home you sighed to yourself. You walked to the front of your lawn to play with your favorite toy: a small white horse which you named “Caballito Blanco”. Lost in your own world you didn’t notice the little boy that had approached you until he yelled hello in your ear. A little annoyed by the sudden interruption you looked up to greet the stranger.

“Hello?” you responded, sounding more like a question.

“Hi! I’m Joel Pimentel De Leon.” The little boy said proudly with a big smile on his face. He noticed how shy you were and, in an attempt to make you open up, he took out a toy from behind his back; it was a small blue horse similar to yours.

He reached it out in front of you, “His name is Caballito Azul. Here” he said softly, indicating for you to grab it.

You smiled up at Joel and carefully took the horse from his small hands into your own.

“Y/N.” You responded “My name is Y/N Y/L/N”.

The memory held a special place in your heart. Ever since that day, you and Joel had been inseparable; refusing to do anything unless it involved the other.

When Joel auditioned for La Banda you were backstage waiting for him with open arms.

He took you with him to rehearsals and you quickly befriended all of the other boys.

As soon as the news broke out that the band was going on tour Joel begged Ricky to let you tag along, promising you would help out and not get in the way; hence how you ended up becoming the group’s personal photographer.

Joel was your best friend and you loved him.

Which was why you your love for him was a secret you would always keep to yourself.

You heard a knock at the door and turned to see Zabdiel’s head pop in, eyes squinting, trying to find you in the darkness of your room. You smiled at how funny he looked and pat the spot next to you on the bed. He walked over with a frown on his face scanning your appearance: big hoodie and spandex on, messy bun and blankets all around you.

“Que haces?” He asked, flopping down next to you.

“Catching up on some shows” You responded, offering him some of the popcorn you were munching on. He grabbed a handful and tried pop them all in his mouth at once, but epically failed, spilling it everywhere.

“You know we’re leaving in an hour for the party right?” He looked over at your not-so-ready-self. You popped a popcorn in your mouth and gave him a smiling nod before turning back to the TV screen in front of you. Getting frustrated by your lack of reaction he took the remote from your lap and turned the TV off.

“Hey!!! Rachel was about to confess her feelings for Ross, give it back!” You said with a pout.

“No estas lista y ya mismo nos vamos!” He held the remote above his head and out of reach from you. You tried tackling him and, much to your surprise, he actually lost his balance and you both tumbled to the ground; he broke your fall by landing with you on top of him.

“Ay dios mio mami!” He breathed out in between laughs.

After somewhat catching your breath from laughing so hard you stole the remote back and pressed play.

“You make a good cushion” You attempted to be funny but mentally kicked yourself after realizing how cringy you actually sounded. He grabbed your waist chuckling and looked at you in the eyes.

The moment was interrupted by the door suddenly opening.

“Yo Y/N do you know where my bandana--- what the…” Joel trailed off when he saw his two best friends together on the ground. Clenching his jaw, he walked out as quickly as he had walked in, slamming the door behind him.

You honestly didn’t blame Joel for jumping to conclusions. If the tables were turned, and you walked in on him with a girl on top, you would have also assumed the worst.

But then again you were confused as to why he was so pissed off.

You cleared your throat and rolled off Zabdiel. You stood up and reached a hand out for him to grab. Once you both recollected yourselves he asked if you were finally going to start getting ready.

“I’m not going Zabdi” You crawled back on the bed but he pushed the covers off of you.

“Yes you are. You’re going to regret it if you don’t, it’s in a penthouse.” He rummaged through your suitcase trying to find you an outfit.

“I’m just not in the mood.” You whined but you knew there was no winning this battle. He threw a black tube top and white shorts on the bed.

“There will be free food.”

And with that you were off to the bathroom to get changed.

You couldn’t deny that the party was fun. You made a mental note to thank Zabdi for dragging your ass out of bed because, truth be told, you would have regretted seeing their instagram stories of them out while you laid in bed all because you were in a “bad mood”.

You danced with Erick, Zabdiel and Christopher the whole night. Richard had found a partner and was killing it in the middle of the dance floor. As for Joel… you actually had no idea where he was. You hadn’t seen him since the bus on the way to the party but you recalled him being quiet and on his phone the whole time.

Joel was upset. No doubt about it. After what he saw earlier tonight he assumed you were sleeping with Zabdiel and was trying to find a logical explanation as to why you hid it from him.

But that wasn’t the real reason why he was moody.

No.

He was upset because the thought of you with a guy other than him broke his heart. But you only saw him as a best friend and nothing more, which was why he would never confess his feelings to you; in fear that it would change the dynamic of the friendship you had cultivated for so many years. He knew that what you two had now was better than nothing at all.

So yes, he was mad. And you looking beautiful hadn’t helped his temper. The first thing he did when he got out of the bus was head directly for the bar. Although he was not much of a drinker, tonight was an exception, he started with some shots and a couple beers. A couple minutes later, he had a blonde sitting on his lap as he watched you dance from across the room, wishing he could be with you instead. 

After dancing el guachineo with Erick, you told the guys you were going to grab a couple of drinks. You started heading towards the bar when you caught sight of Joel out of the corner of your eye. You turned to walk in his direction, excited to have found him, until you saw a pretty girl sitting on his lap. Her hands were running through his brown curls and her lips were kissing his neck. She brought her mouth close to his ear and whispered something that made him laugh. At that exact moment Joel’s eyes found yours and maintaining eye contact, he tilted her head to slowly connect their lips. Your blood ran cold at the sight of someone else kissing the lips you longed for. But you didn’t have the right to be mad, he wasn’t yours, in that sense, after all. Blinking away the image, you continued your walk towards the bar. Grabbing the shots you ordered for the guys you walked back to the spot where you thought you had left them but they were nowhere to be found.

“Well the more the merrier I guess...” You said out loud to no one in particular.

“Pa’ arriba, pa’ bajo, pa’ el centro y pa dentro!!” You chanted alone and downed the shots that were not supposed to be yours. You were sure you looked crazy to everyone else but at that point you didn’t care. Feeling the alcohol start to hit, you started to let loose on the dance floor. You were enjoying yourself until you felt two strong hands grip your hips from behind. You turned to see who it was and was met by a pair of piercing blue eyes. The man who had started dancing with you was tall and handsome, his chiseled facial features resembled those of a model’s and those full lips begged for you to kiss them. So that’s what you did. You didn’t realize at the time how dumb you were being, but you were too intoxicated to care. One kiss progressed into a full on makeout and a couple minutes later he was dragging you to the bathroom. Joel caught sight of this and debated whether or not to get involved. He had seen you take multiple shots, but didn’t think you were wasted enough to actually hook up with a stranger in a bathroom. When he saw you had no intentions of stopping he started to get up but was immediately pulled back down.

“Where are you going baby?” The blonde failed at seducing him since he already had a determined look on his face.

“I have to go I’m sorry but it was a pleasure meeting you.” He responded as he got up and followed you down a narrow hallway. After pushing through the crowd of sweaty bodies, Joel found you pinned up against a wall as the guy you were with trailed kisses down your neck. With a small growl he intervened, grabbing you by the arm and pulling you away.

“We’re going home.” He spat out and you could see fury in his eyes.

“What the hell are you doing?” You managed to slur out as he dragged you out of the party.

“I’m calling an Uber and taking you home.”

“But I’m having fun” You protested with the sharp scent of alcohol escaping your lips.

“Y/N, you were about to hook up with a random stranger in the bathroom!” His volume raised with each word, leaving you angry and hurt. Crossing your arms over your chest you remained quiet. He wasn’t wrong, if he hadn’t interrupted you would’ve made a terrible  mistake, but you weren’t going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.

The ride back to the house was long and quiet. No words were exchanged when you got out of the Uber other than a couple “thank you’s” to the driver.

Joel hurried in front of you until he noticed your trouble walking and came back, swung an arm around your waist, and basically carried you to the house. He may have been mad but he didn’t want his best friend to bust her face.

The sound of your ringer broke the silence, you looked down to see Zabdiel’s name and face on your screen.

“Of course.” Joel scoffed, catching a glimpse of the picture.

“What’s your issue?” You retorted, letting the call go to voicemail. Joel’s behavior was getting on every last one of your nerves.

“My issue,” He said as he stepped in front of you and looked you dead in the eye “is that I’m so incredibly in love with my best friend that pretending like there’s nothing there actually kills me.”

He hadn’t meant to blurt out his love for you. It happened in the heat of the moment. His face immediately turned a shade of red and he looked down at the ground, wishing the ground would swallow him whole.

There was a moment of awkward silence before you burst out laughing. Joel was taken aback by your reaction but it didn’t take long for him to join you with nervous laughter.

Seeing you smile and laugh so freely made his heart melt. He wondered how you had the power to make him feel alive even in the darkest of times and, somehow, managed to make him smile in the middle of an argument.

“Why are you laughing? It’s not funny…” He nervously said with a small laugh.

“Right, I’m sorry.  I’ll be serious.” You tried to put a straight face on but couldn’t help the corners of your mouth from creeping up. You couldn’t contain your laughter any longer so you giggled and covered your mouth. You finally calmed down after Joel’s hands dropped from your shoulders and you saw sadness show into his eyes. You didn’t mean to make him feel bad, you just couldn’t believe this moment was real.

Stepping closer and cupping his cheeks with both hands you brought your face close to his.

“It’s funny because I’m in love with you too.”

How To Move Plants When Moving House

Like any living thing, plants require special attention. CDFA's Animal Health and Pest Exclusion Branches work cooperatively with other agencies, including California's Department of Fish and Game and the United States Department of Agriculture, to prevent the introduction and spread of harmful pests and diseases into California by long distance moving companies.

Plants that originate from areas under quarantine for imported fire ants or harmful nematode pests must be received by a nursery, business, or individual that has a valid "Quarantine Holding Area" so that plant material can be inspected if necessary.

Greenhouse plants imported under the United States Greenhouse Certification Program may have a United States Department of Agriculture - Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) Export Certification Label, in lieu of a Phytosanitary Certificate (see Appendix 4).

The statute also excludes restrictions on any species that is regulated under the Plant Pest Act, explicitly stating that Section 42 does not authorize any action with respect to the importation of any plant pest as defined in the Federal Plant Pest Act, insofar as such importation is subject to regulation under that Act.” Thus any animal species whose importation is regulated under the Plant Pest Act cannot be regulated under the Lacey Act. The Plant Protection Act (PPA) authorizes the USDA to prohibit or restrict the importation or interstate movement of any plant, plant product, biological control organism, noxious weed, article, or means of conveyance if the Secretary of Agriculture determines that the prohibition or restriction is necessary to prevent the introduction into the U.S., or the dissemination within the U.S., of a plant pest or noxious weed (7 U.S.C. §411(a)).

Plant material that is imported into the U.S. (or moved into the continental U.S. from Hawaii) in association with growing media may never be exported to Canada, no matter how long it is grown in the U.S. , unless it meets the requirements of the Canadian Growing Media Program (directive D-96-20) at the time of entry to the U.S.

We have seem some fantastic pot plants in our years moving Florida homes around West Palm Beach, and we thought it may be a good opportunity to shed a little light on the safest and most effective way to make sure that your ‘mobile garden' arrives in tip top shape.

According to Suke, it doesn't make as much sense to move a plant like a pothos, which can be easily replaced and grow fairly quickly, whereas something like variegated jade is typically more worth the effort of moving, since it can take a lot longer to grow and is far more expensive to replace.

Yeah, it’s not a popular liqueur in these parts. And other than the Picon Punch, which nobody around here seems to like (apparently it’s pretty big in France as an aperitif), we have no other recipes for which we have the proper ingredients available to us.

We only have one drink (the Picon Punch) in our bartending book that uses it. And the only time I’ve EVER seen it ordered was once when two of our guests were trying to buy each other the worst drinks they could think of, and asked us what our worst liqueur was (I didn’t know, but I pointed out the Amer Picon as one we NEVER use, so it couldn’t be THAT good).

I’m thinking of trying to create a drink with it. From my online searches, it apparently has an orange flavor (I don’t know whether it’s as orange as Grand Marnier or, the off-shoot that we carry, Grand Marquette). But it’s also apparently pretty darned bitter.

So what I want to ask my boss is: we’ve had these 7½ bottles for three years. I want to get rid of them.

Will he give me permission to spend, maybe, the last hour of a shift or two experimenting with it to see if I can come up with something that tastes good that we can promote? Because I would obviously have to taste it, which means I would be drinking on the job.

Or, on the other hand, would he be okay with me being behind the bar when I’m off work so I can do this when I’m not actually on the clock?

I really want to get rid of this stuff. It’s been taking up space for years. Literally.

We need to simplify. And my bartenders WILL fight me on this, but my boss is with me on it. While one bartender says “this area is full of beer snobs and they won’t come in if we don’t have their beer,” that’s hard to act on and keep those beers when we go through just 2-3 bottles per week of those beers (I tried to fight for Guinness, as much as I despise that drink, because we have one player who likes it a lot, but when I shows my boss his gambling stats he said it wasn’t worth keeping his first choice beer just because he plays $40-$60/week).

They’ll drink something else (even Sam Adams Lager or Seasonal doesn’t really move -- our big movers are Budweiser, Coors Light, Corona, and Modelo Especial). I’ve got 13 different beers on my list to eliminate. Because beer snobs or not, that’s what most of our guests are drinking. We’re seriously considering giving away a case of a premium craft beer (Wild Horse, made by Great Basin) at our 3rd Anniversary Party in early September just because we can’t even GIVE this stuff away (I tried to make it a $1 beer instead of $3.50, my boss originally said to make it a $2 beer, then said “if we can’t even GIVE it away, how are we gonna sell it for $2?” and shot me down on lowering the price).

But I also know that some people won’t come back if we no longer carry their beers. And I need to visit the other two bars near us (well, there are three within a block radius, but one has 31 craft beers on tap and we’re not going to even TRY to compete with that) -- one is next door to us in a Mexican restaurant and the other is kitty-corner from us on a small street and, while they do have a limited food menu, they’re more of a bar than a restaurant -- and try to convince them to tell me what they sell the most of without it coming across like corporate espionage. I’ve got my work cut out for me. But my boss told me in our bar meeting this week (he meets with all department managers) that he thinks I’m the right guy for the job, and he otherwise had high praise for me for giving him numbers that the last bar manager was never able (or possibly just not willing) to put together for him.

He doesn’t think I’ll be able to keep up the pace I’ve been on for the past couple of months, doing weekly (instead of the required monthly) inventories, tracking how much of everything we’re actually going through, getting multi-week averages (I’m up to a 7-week average usage, and on weeks like this adjusting for out “first Saturday of the month” parties...but those averages could change with the seasons so I would LIKE to keep up what I’m doing if I don’t get burnt out on it as my boss predicts since the season is changing soon), but it’s nice to sit in meetings with him and hear him praise me for “taking the bull by the horns” to track this stuff,to hear him say “You did exactly what I did the first time  managed a bar, and I love that since I didn’t even tell you to do it that way,” and to end the meetings with “wow, I just learned A LOT that I didn’t know.”

Early next month, we have department quarterly meetings. And at that point, I will break the news to my bartenders that we’re going to stop carrying some of our products (again, 13 beers are on the chopping block, out of about 30, because we just don’t sell/give away enough to good players to justify carrying it, and we NEED to bring down our cost of goods [COGS]).

As a presidential contender, running against opponents who openly disdain elites and big money, she has emphasized not only her reputation as a take-no-prisoners prosecutor but also the humbleness of her roots—a child of civil rights activism, of busing, “so proud,” as she said at the start of her speech announcing her candidacy, “to be a child of Oakland.”

Her rise, however, was propelled in and by a very different milieu. In this less explored piece of her past, Harris used as a launching pad the tightly knit world of San Francisco high society, navigating early on this rarefied world of influence and opulence, charming and partying with movers and shakers—ably cultivating relationships with VIPs who would become friends and also backers and donors of every one of her political campaigns, tapping into deep pockets and becoming a popular figure in a small world dominated by a handful of powerful families. This stratum of San Francisco remains a profoundly important part of her network—including not just powerful Democratic donors but an ambassador appointed by President Donald Trump who ran in the same circles.

Harris, now 54, often has talked about the importance of having “a seat at the table,” of being an insider instead of an outsider. And she learned that skill in this crowded, incestuous, famously challenging political proving ground, where she worked to score spots at the some of the city’s most sought-after tables. In the mid- to late ’90s and into the aughts, the correspondents who kept tabs on the comings and goings of the area’s A-listers noted where Harris was and what she was doing and who she was with. As she advanced professionally, jumping from Alameda County to posts in the offices of the district and city attorneys across the Bay, she was a trustee, too, of the museum of modern art and active in causes concerning AIDS and the prevention of domestic abuse, and out and about at fashion shows and cocktail parties and galas and get-togethers at the most modish boutiques. She was, in the breezy, buzzy parlance of these kinds of columns, one of the “Pretty Thangs.” She was a “rising star.” She was “rather perfect.” And she mingled with “spiffy and powerful friends” who were her contemporaries as well as their even more influential mothers and fathers. All this was fun, but it wasn’t unserious. It was seeing and being seen with a purpose, society activity with political utility.

Because three years after the Getty wedding, in mid-2002, Harris called Mark Buell. She knew him because Harris was friends with his stepdaughter, Summer Tompkins Walker, the daughter of Susie Tompkins Buell, the major Democratic donor. Harris told him she wanted to run for district attorney. At first, Buell was skeptical, he said recently when we got together for dinner at an old Union Square haunt called Sam’s; he considered Harris “a socialite with a law degree,” he explained over salmon and sauvignon blanc. The more Harris talked, though, the more impressed he became. By the end of their conversation, Buell offered to be her finance chair. His first piece of advice: To knock off an incumbent in what would be a nasty, three-candidate fight, Harris was going to need to raise an early, eye-popping amount of money. Buell saw her friends, people he knew, too, as an asset to deploy. “So we put together a finance committee that primarily was young socialite ladies,” he told me. The group included Vanessa Getty, by then one of Harris’ closest pals, and Susan Swig—head-turning surnames in the city’s choicest circles. Buell’s directive: “I said, ‘No one has ever raised more than $150,000 for a D.A.’s race, totally. I want this group to raise $100,000 by the first reporting period.”

Outfitted in sharp designer suits and strands of bright pearls, Harris kickstarted her drive to become San Francisco’s top cop—in its ritziest, most prestigious locale. Predominantly white Pacific Heights—hills upon hills, gobsmacking views of the Golden Gate strait, mansions built and bought with both new tech money and old gold rush cash—is home to Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, Gavin Newsom and others, one of the country’s foremost concentrations of politicians and their patrons. Including the Buells. In late 2002, this became the campaign routine, Buell recalled: “Thirty to 50 people in a room … cocktails … a nice introduction by the host.”

And then?

“Kamala would make her pitch.”

And then?

“We’d go around with the bag and collect the money.”

“A well-qualified prosecutor with a lot of ties to the Pacific Heights crowd, Harris should have no trouble raising money,” theSan Francisco Chroniclenoted that November, and so it was: By the close of the calendar year, Harris had raised $100,560—nearly 23 percent of which came from the three ZIP codes of Pacific Heights. It’s a roster of early donors that reads like a who’s who of the city. “That crowd really got her started to be taken seriously,” Buell said.

These people who seeded the start of Harris’ political career got something in return as well. “You always had the feeling that she was going somewhere,” Dede Wilsey told me. Wilsey is a stalwart fundraiser and a philanthropist, the widow of real estate bigwig Alfred Wilsey, and a Republican who nonetheless is a Harris supporter and friend. “You might want to go along for that ride, too.”

Harris, whose campaign did not respond to a request for comment for this story, put her headquarters in the Bayview, a poor neighborhood six or so miles south of Pacific Heights and a world away, and she would earn the backing of a swath of the city’s black, Chinese and LGBT leaders. But in January of 2003, she also was on the cover of theNob Hill Gazette, the monthly paper of record of San Francisco society—one of the faces in a collage of people deemed to be the crème de la crème.

Harris, said theGazette, “may be our next D.A.”

Eleven months later, it was true.

“… Kamala Harris, an Alameda Co. deputy D.A. who is something new in Willie’s love life,” Herb Caen wrote in his column in theSan Francisco Chronicleon March 22, 1994, making public her romantic relationship with Willie Brown, who was still married (albeit long estranged), 30 years older than Harris and by then approaching a decade and a half into his unprecedented reign as speaker of the California State Assembly. “She’s a woman, not a girl,” Caen continued in his signature three-dot style. “And she’s black …” Beyond the wince-worthy language, it’s hard to imagine in that time and space a more spotlit debut.

Caen, for his part, was at the tail end of a nonpareil, nearly 60-year career. Six days a week, he two-finger-typed a thousand or so of the most-read words in San Francisco. “If he put your name in boldface, you’d get calls from everyone you knew saying, ‘I saw you in Herb Caen today,’” Jesse Hamlin, one of his former assistants, told me. “If your name wasn’t in there, you weren’t anybody,” longtime local press agent Lee Houskeeper added. In his columns, Caen called Harris “attractive, intelligent and charming.” He called her a “steadying influence” for Brown. And in December of 1995, when Brown was elected mayor, Caen called her the “first-lady-in-waiting.”

Brown, meanwhile, was one of Caen’s best friends, and his mayoralty would cap a lengthy career in which he proved to be one of the shrewder getters, keepers and users of political power of the last half of the 20th century. The dapper, hyper-connected bon vivant and unashamed showman wore pricey Brioni suits and drove fast, fancy cars. Brown didn’t want to talk to me for this story, but he once wrote: “Being able to cross over into the white community is essential for any black, female or male, to succeed as a political figure. I suggest black women lay the groundwork by looking to become active on the boards of social, cultural and, charitable institutions like symphonies, museums, and hospitals. It’s the way to get respect from a world that otherwise is content to eschew or label you. You have to demand the opportunities to enter these worlds.”

It’s hard to think honestly about the origins of the rise of Harris without grappling with the reality of the role of Brown. He helped her. He put her on a pair of state boards that required not much work and paid her more than $400,000 across five years on top of her salary as a prosecutor. He gave her a BMW. He helped her, too, though, in a way that was less immediately material but arguably far more enduringly important.

“Brown, of course, was the darling of the well-to-do set, if you will,” veteran political consultant Jack Davis, who managed Brown’s mayoral campaign, told me. “And she was the girlfriend, and so she met, you know, everybody who’s anybody, as a result of being his girl.”

“I met her through Willie,” John Burton, the former San Francisco congressman and chairman of the California Democratic Party, said in an interview. “I would think it’s fair to say that most of the people in San Francisco met her through Willie.”

“He was the guy that put her right in the ballgame,” said Dan Addario, the chief investigator for the district attorney whom Harris ultimately would topple.

“He made her,” Davis said.

Many people bristle at this, castigating such sentiments as tired, sexist and racist, rightly pointing out that Brown dispensed favors and counsel to hundreds of aspiring politicians and only one of them is currently a U.S. senator running for president near the head of the heap.

“Look,” Rebecca Prozan, Harris’ campaign manager in 2003, told me, “those of us that want to be in public service in an elected capacity can be used by people who are in public office, taken around town, and there’s a whole host of us that have had that opportunity, and it didn’t work out for us. There has to also be something special abouther.”

“Kamala Harris was plenty capable of impressing anyone she met … all on her own,” said P.J. Johnston, a consultant in San Francisco and a former Brown press secretary, “and did so frequently.”

Harris broke up with Brown shortly after he won the election to be mayor. “She ended it,” Brown told Joan Walsh, writing forSan Franciscomagazine in 2003, “because she concluded there was no permanency in our relationship, and she was absolutely right.” But in the society and gossip columns in theChronicle, in theSan Francisco Examinerand in theNob Hill Gazette, her mentions didn’t go down. They ticked up.

When she was still a deputy D.A. in Oakland, Harris joined the board of trustees of the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. She was a member of the San Francisco Jazz Organization. She was a patron dinner chair for the San Francisco Symphony’s annual Black & White Ball. She was the executive director of the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, and she was president of the board of directors of Partners Ending Domestic Abuse. She was on the board of a nonprofit called Women Count. “Few women,” gushed theGazette, “are more involved than (equally glamorous) attorney Kamala Harris.” In the outlet distributed specifically to the neighborhoods of the rich, she was featured in a fashion spread, shown wearing $565 boots, a $975 skirt and a $1,095 coat, all made by Burberry. In the descriptions of P.J. Corkery of theExaminer—who also ghost-wrote Brown’s book—Harris was “super-chic” and “super-smart” and “drop-dead elegant” and “very visible.” She was seen at Harry Denton’s Starlight Room. She was seen at Jeannette Etheredge’s Tosca. She went to a ball to benefit local arts museums at which celebrity event planner Stanlee Gatti’s elaborate set-up incorporated centerpieces of large balls of ice—and was spotted “sometime around midnight” trying to bowl the frosty orbs with Gavin Newsom, who was then a city supervisor as well as a friend and business partner of the Gettys. She went to the 25th anniversary showing of San Francisco’s “Beach Blanket Babylon” and was spotted slipping out of the afterparty for a dinner at Jardinière with Willie Brown and high societygrande dameDenise Hale. She went to a Ricky Martin concert in a limo with Hale and Denton and scenester Harry de Wildt. She went to the parties ofhaute coutureclothier Wilkes Bashford. She went to ladies’ luncheons at Pacific Heights homes. She had Sunday dinners with the Gettys.

“For society—and I hate that word—forthingsto continue to be exciting and interesting,” Vanessa Getty once toldVanity Fair, “circles have to keep expanding.”

“A lot of people think, ‘Those people are too rich for me, I can’t be part of their world—they’re out of my fucking league,’” a Harris friend said later inSan Franciscomagazine. Harris clearly didn’t think that. “She just kept showing up.”

By 2002, at the start of her campaign for D.A., she showed her packed, jumbled, leather-bound Filofax to Andrea Dew Steele, who was working at the time as Susie Tompkins Buell’s political and philanthropic adviser. Harris had organized her contacts in an inefficient and outdated way, Steele told me, but the list itself was formidable. “Definitely,” she said.

Recently, in the sitting room in the Pacific Heights house of socialite-turned-attorney Sharon Owsley, I visited with Owsley as well as Debbie Mesloh, a longtime Harris friend, and we talked about these inroads Harris was able to make.

“Kamala also comes from, you know, kind of an intellectually established family,” Mesloh said.

Owsley agreed. “A very fine family,” she said. “Her mother was east Indian and came to this country and became a renowned scientist, and her father came to this country and became a professor of economics. So, she has, you know, the genealogy to move in any circles. But I also have to emphasize that … you don’tneedthat—but she had it all right.”

The support from the crowds in the homes on the hills was the fuel, and Harris took it from there. She pulled in campaign contributions from “every ZIP code in the city,” she emphasized toWmagazine—and the share of her contributions from Pacific Heights got progressively smaller through 2003, down to 21 percent from January to June, 19 from July to September, 13 from October to November and 12 percent from November to December. “I walk very comfortably in a lot of communities in this city,” Harris told theChronicleas her campaign crescendoed. The newspaper endorsed her in October, saying she had “shown an ability to work with neighborhood groups from the Bayview to Pacific Heights—in essence, all of San Francisco.” Said Buell when we met: “That’s part of Kamala’s gift, I think, is that she can go into a room in any part of town, and she can act appropriate to that room.” There remained, though, no question which candidate San Francisco high society was behind. Joining those donors who maxed out at $500 before the end of 2002 (Bashford, Gatti, Billy and Vanessa Getty, Summer Tompkins Walker, Susan Swig, Steven Swig, Darian Swig, Mary Swig, Marjorie Swig, Roselyne “Cissie” Swig, and Ann Moller Caen, Herb Caen’s widow) now were Wilsey, her son Trevor Traina, toy tycoon John Bowes, Frances Bowes, Ann Getty, Peter Getty, George and Charlotte Mailliard Shultz, in addition to a slate of Fishers (founders of the Gap) and Schwabs (as in Charles).

“You have to have your feet in a lot of different communities in order to win citywide office in San Francisco. It is by no meansenough,” Jim Stearns, a top strategist on the ’03 Harris campaign, said of Pacific Heights. “It is just, you know—itishelpful in that it is a good community to raise money out of, and it is a good community to get some visibility.”

“The challenge with San Francisco politics, even more then than now, is that almost everybody agrees with everybody else on everything,” said Dan Schnur, a longtime Republican-turned-independent political operative who worked at the highest levels of state and presidential politics and lived in San Francisco from 1995 to 2002. “Up-and-comers are less likely to distinguish themselves by policy differences than the way they navigate these political-cultural-philanthropic-community circles.”

“Particularly with candidates of color, you know, often they don’t have those kinds of networks,” Steele said, “so this was very, very important for her success … to have some funding stream for her first race, and subsequent races.”

Harris had put in the work.

“I could have met Kamala through Sharon,” Wilsey said. “I could have met her through Ann Getty, I could have met her through, you know, any one of those people.”

“We had mutual friends,” Cissie Swig told me. “If she was born in Oakland, she found her niche, perhaps, in San Francisco, and her expertise and her smarts served her well when she decided to come and be in San Francisco,” she added.

“She has a presence,” Owsley said. “She has a star quality.”

An “aura,” Wilsey added.

“Her strength. Her determination,” Frances Bowes said when I asked her what had attracted her to Harris. “She’s not scared of anybody.”

“Whyshouldn’twe have a fabulous D.A. like that?” Owsley asked.

“I think it started with the fact that people wanted to be able to say they’d met her and were supporting her because of this quasi-social network that we started with, and the more she raised, and the more she got traction, the more everybody else wanted to say they heard her, they talked to her, and were supportive,” Buell told me when we met for dinner. “I have to be careful here, because I still live in this town, but they were kind of professional socialites, and they wanted to help her. They saw it as a two-way street.”

This past spring,at a 2020 fundraiserat the house of one of her Pacific Heights neighbors, Dede Wilsey wanted to talk to Kamala Harris.

To thank her.

“She was very, very helpful,” Wilsey told me when I reached her in Newport, Rhode Island, where she’s been summering, “when my son was recently appointed ambassador to Austria. … And I said, ‘Kamala, I really wanted to be sure to come to this because I wanted to thank you for being so nice to Trevor.’ And she said it was the right thing to do. And I said, ‘But, Kamala, people don’t always do the right thing. And I want you to know how much I appreciate it.’”

The next day, I reached Traina, President Donald Trump’s pick to be the U.S. ambassador to Austria, in Vienna, where he’s been based since last May.

“Kamala is an old friend,” Traina told me. “We all kind of grew up together, you know, Gavin, Kamala and many others.”

He supported her when she was running for D.A. “And she was very nice and very supportive of me when I was going through my Senate confirmation process. And she was one of a number of different senators who put in a good word for me with the staffs at the Foreign Relations Committee, which I really appreciated. That was nice of her. And I think the proof was in the pudding because I was unanimously confirmed by the Senate.”

He, too, was at that Napa Valley Getty wedding, back in 1999.

“Great party,” he said.

The New Kia Soul Is Funky Made Fresher

It’s said that the best revenge is living well—and for the Kia Soul, it’s hard to imagine one better against the Japanese boxes that it sought to usurp when it first appeared in 2010.

Expectations were modest from the start, but the Soul wave would eventually swell to three times the original sales forecast, vanquishing the Scion xB, which suffered a disastrous redesign, then a brand implosion; the Nissan Cube, which was left to wither on the vine and wasn’t very good besides; and the Honda Element, a cult favorite that was perhaps killed prematurely. Along the way, the Soul became a cornerstone of Kia’s American lineup.

Now in its third generation, the 2020 Kia Soul continues its upward trajectory. Sitting on a slightly enlarged platform, and featuring a bevy of features one may not expect to find at its price point, the model continues to define what a successful rectilinear people-mover should be, even if the rest of the industry has given up on them.

Plus on Size, But Not Plus-Sized

But don’t worry, the embiggened Soul is still right-sized. It may be a smidge over two inches longer than the model it replaces, with 1.2 inches of that found between the front and rear axles, but it’s grown no taller or wider.

Strangely, interior measurements show only a modest improvement (0.2 inch) in front legroom, coupled with a puzzling 0.3-inch cut in the same metric for rear-seat riders. Cargo capacity is roughly the same, but a wider, lower hatch opening makes it easier to drop grocery bags and overnight gear behind the second row.

From the outside, the alterations are much more noticeable. Monster Grille Syndrome now plagues one of Kia’s smallest offerings, but the big bug-eater up front is effectively complemented by gun-slit headlights that squint where past Souls goggled. In profile, the car’s greenhouse still displays the same playful kink at the rear, with the model name now etched into a blacked-out panel on the D-pillar, and a beefier, almost muscular aesthetic characterizes the less slabby sides. A set of striking taillights frame the back glass, and you can order more than a few fun colors for the exterior, including blues, greens, and reds intended to add a bit of personality to the sea of appliances clogging the parking lot at, well, everywhere.

Gear in Here

The 2020 Kia Soul brings rethinks to the lineup and cabin, too. The previous goofy trim levels that included ones called + (Plus) and another called ! (Exclaim) has been binned in favor of LX, S, X-Line, GT-Line, and EX nomenclature. In the X-Line, things are cheerful enough for the vehicle’s affordable pricing: relatively soft plastics everywhere your hands or elbows might stray, an ergonomically sound (albeit sans satellite radio) 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that will be familiar to fans of the brand, and actual buttons and knobs for the climate-control and radio, the better to avoid distractions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in each and every Soul.

The GT-Line is aimed at those seeking a sportier look, and its red exterior accents and unique badging can also be combined with a whopping 10.25-inch LCD touchscreen and passenger-facing dash-and-door speakers (which once again can be illuminated so as to pulse with the gentle rhythms of your Soul soundtrack) from Harman/Kardon. There’s also a head-up display, although it’s on a screen that pops up from the dash so you have to sort of look down anyway. A heated steering wheel and seats are fitted, too.

Kia calls its group of active safety technologies “Drive Wise,” and the usual features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control are all available, as are lane-change assist and a driver-drowsiness monitor. Although the LX is bereft of this type of fancy tech, much of it is standard from the S model on.

Go For Turbo

The roads leading from San Diego, California, to the small town of Julian offer a jumble of smooth highways, broken-asphalt secondaries, and the occasional dust storm, surprisingly diverse range of environments in which to test the new hatchback’s mettle.

In an unexpected twist, the southern part of the state would also deliver almost every meteorological season in the space of just a few hours during my time behind the wheel, with the climb into Julian from the other side of the mountains asking the Soul to deal with rain, then sleet, then a full-on blizzard, treacherous conditions that it handled with alacrity despite the handicap of all-season rubber.

The best news under the new Soul’s hood is that last year’s entry-level engine has been banished and replaced by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s good for 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. These are welcome improvements over the pokey 1.6-liter that was once standard, although the Kia faithful will note that the numbers fall short of 2019’s optional naturally aspirated 2.0-liter (a different engine, which is no longer in the picture).

It’s an altogether adequate substitution, and it’s offered with either six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmissions. It achieves 27 mpg combined with the stick and 30 mpg with the CVT, but it’s worth noting that compared to a few other small haulers in its class, the Soul is among the least miserly at the pump.

The automatic has been reprogrammed to address complaints about buzz and revs that are common to variable transmissions, and while the engine is on the noisier side when spurred, the virtual “steps” built into the transmission to simulate traditional gearchanges admirably quell fears of an imminent killer-bee attack.

Passing is for the patient with the 2.0, although never unsafe or exasperating. That being said, the Soul undergoes a personality shift when equipped with its turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder, which continues to offer the same 201 horses and 195 lb-ft of twist as it did before. Not only is the turbo quieter at speed, but its torque delivery is confident and quick, thanks in large part to the standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that serves as its partner in performance. Rounding out its benefits is barely any fuel-mileage penalty compared to the less muscular unit: 29 mpg combined. There will be a new EV model with much, much more range than before, as well.

It’s an auspicious pairing that elevates the Kia, and if you can swing the extra scratch to step up—roughly $5K over the estimated $18,000 base, although official pricing has yet to be released—we’d recommend it in a heartbeat. Just don’t expect the Soul to sports-car its way down a two-lane, for while suspension tuning is comfortable and controlled through corners, the hatch is a little too top-heavy to toss around with glee.

Better the Jack than the Master

There are no shortage of options in the small-footprint, daily-driver segment, with rivals such as the Honda Fit, Toyota CH-R, and Mazda CX-3 each delivering their own mix of space, safety, and frugality. Still, there remains only one Soul, a vehicle that continues to combine a class-above cabin with gobs of features and respectable practicality without asking you to sell you own soul to afford it.

The Mazda may be more responsive, the Fit more capacious, and the CH-R able to trade on its badge’s reputation for quality, but the Soul is the all-arounder that won’t have you lacking in any one department. It’s the last box standing, but it clearly isn’t resting on any laurels. The Soul is indeed living well.
