Continuing from the previous cartoon, St. Joan of Arc's sleepover reaches its THRILLING CONCLUSION?! (Yes, this is based on an actual true story.)
___
JOKE-OGRAPHY:
1. Source: After all this time, we finally see the full picture. Now witness the full source from which this ridiculous-but-more-or-less-authentic story arc was spawned -- a portion of St. Joan's trial (translated by W. S. Scott): "Asked if she knew Catherine de la Rochelle, or had seen her, [Jeanne] said yes, at Jargeau; and at Montfaucon-en-Berry. Asked whether [Catherine] had shown her a woman dressed in white, who she said sometimes appeared to her, [Jeanne] answered no. Asked what she said to her, [Jeanne] answered that this Catherine said to her that a woman appeared, a white lady, dressed in cloth of gold, who told her to go through the good towns, and that the king would give her heralds and trumpets to proclaim that whoever had gold, silver, or treasure should at once bring it forth; and that she would know those who did not and those who had hidden it; and would know where to find the treasure; and it would serve to pay Jeanne's men-at-arms. To which she had answered that she should return to her husband, and look after her household and children. And, in order to be certain of the truth, she had spoken to Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret, who told her that this Catherine was mad and a liar. So she wrote to her king that she would tell him what ought to be done. And when she arrived, she informed him that Catherine was only a fool and a liar. However, Brother Richard wanted them to set her to work, which she [Jeanne] would not permit, wherefore Brother Richard and Catherine were displeased with her. Asked if she had spoken to Catherine de la Rochelle concerning going to La Charité, [Jeanne] replied that Catherine did not advise her to go there; saying that it was too cold, and she ought not to go. She said also to Catherine, who wished to go to the Duke of Burgundy to make peace, that it was her opinion that they would find no peace save at the lance's point. She also asked Catherine if this Lady appeared every night; and if so, she would sleep with her. And she did so, but kept awake till midnight; saw nothing, and then went to sleep. And when morning came, she asked if the Lady had appeared. And [Catherine] answered that she had come, but [Jeanne] was asleep, and she had not been able to wake her. So [Jeanne] asked her if the Lady would come the next night. And Catherine said yes. On this account Jeanne slept during the day in order that she might keep awake at night. And she shared Catherine's bed again the following night, and kept awake throughout the night. But she saw no-one, although she often asked, Will she come soon? To which Catherine answered, Yes, soon."
2. Explanation: In short, Joan met Catherine, and while the two might have gotten along at first, their visions eventually told them very different things, and Joan started to distrust Catherine. Eventually, Joan asked Catherine if her visions were visible to everyone and if they would appear every night. Catherine said yes, so Joan stayed over to see the vision. After falling asleep at midnight the first night, she managed to stay away the whole second night, but saw nothing. She took this to mean Catherine was a liar and a madwoman, and that was that.
3. Pun: In the fourth panel, the second narration says that Catherine was "lying" beside Joan. There are two kinds of "lying": one means "resting on a surface," and the other means "deliberately saying something untrue." Because Catherine is lying (resting) on a bed, but also lying (untruthing) to Joan about the White Lady, both definitions are valid AND grammatically correct. Hence, this is a perfect pun, and I demand all due compensation.

Thinking about how "A child needs her mother," is THE MOST ROMANTIC thing Joan Ferguson could have said to Vera in that last moment, and I will die on this hill.
Sure, it's referring to Joan's own traumatic past involving her mother, and maybe Joan genuinely believes that, but it's way more.
After obsessing over, stalking, and tormenting Vera for years, there was almost nothing that she could say, even after saving her, that wouldn't seem threatening. I remember some people wanted some kind of verbal love confession or something, and amongst other things, Joan literally just had the revelation, "I'd rather not kill Vera," a couple episodes ago, so I'm not sure she's at the full emotional maturity level of verbalizing, "I love you."
BUT mostly, I think she knows it would be the WRONG THING TO SAY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is not the face of a woman who needs to hear, "I love you," from the woman whom she just found out had tried to kidnap her baby.
Tumblr media
The thing is, I don't think the answer is necessarily what she says. I think it's what she does.
Tumblr media
THAT'S the answer. Joan reaching for Vera's hand IS the "I love you," but in a way, so is what she says next. Again, Vera just almost broke her streak of being the only person not trying to kill Joan Ferguson because she found out Joan was trying to KIDNAP HER BABY (who I don't think Joan *really* cares that much about aside from her value to Vera and some hilariously sick claim in her mind having created the circumstances for her conception).
Tumblr media
Again, NOT the face of someone who is going to be receptive to "I love you."
So Joan does possibly the only completely unselfish thing she's ever done regarding Vera. She lets her go. And instead of unburdening herself in this moment, which might be what she needs, she instead gives Vera what SHE needs. An assurance that Vera and Grace are safe from her.
Tumblr media
And that's when Vera understands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Joan's gift is that Vera's allowed to let go as well and is at peace with Joan disappearing into the woods to begin her life as a gay cryptid among the already terrifying Australian wildlife. ROMANTIC AF.

Thirsty Thursday/Friday- something involving horses or dogs for the Regency AU.
Shoving this together with a prompt from @junojelli, who says 'Some Regency AU from the POV of Annie, who has been instrumental in her brother's engagement'
Annie had never been to a house before.
Her friends had laughed at that, when she'd said it aloud, but there were houses and houses, and Belleau was a house, the kind you had built by Robert Adam when you were elevated to the peerage and made a duke and expected to entertain in that style.
The heat of late summer was slowly descending upon London and everyone was making plans to retreat to the country, if such a retreat could be had, and so, of course, the Duchess had invited the unmarried sister of her fiance to come and stay.
It had been quite the thing, to take Sir Lewis's carriage from London, and stay at an inn along the road, and come up the drive the next afternoon jolting and tired but treated to such a view. The house, too, was a marvel, with fully fifteen maids out front to meet them and someone to take her bags, and a bedroom the size of a palace just for her. And the Duchess is mistress of all this?
Annie had only ever expected to visit a house like this one as the governess, and never a guest. But a guest she was, with all the rights and privileges therein, curtseyed and catered to. Should Miss Winters like tea, in her room? She said yes only because that was what ladies did, after long journeys, but she'd only taken a few sips before throwing on her shawl and going to explore the rest of the house, which soon led to the rest of the garden, which then got her out to the stable block, where she was quite ignored by the grooms and allowed to explore at her leisure.
They did not keep horses in London - quite an expense, her mother would have said, and a hired coach did them very well when it was required. But Dick had taken her to see the Household Cavalry, and feed the grays, Annie laughing at their soft, snuffling noses tickling her hand. Dick had met the Duchess several times for a ride in Hyde Park, and Annie knew she loved her horses.
How could you not, when they were creatures like this?
She walked along the stalls, admiring their great heads and liquid eyes, stopping to hold her hand out, flattened, as Dick had shown her, for one tall dark fellow to sniff and fuss over, his ears forward and relaxed and quite at his leisure. He made a noise and swung his head, and Annie realized she was not alone - there was another woman, waiting just behind her. Another house guest, probably. Dick said there would be several. "Are they not magnificent?"
"Indeed they are," the woman agreed, coming to join Annie with a brief smile. The horse Annie had been petting gave a contented whiffle and leaned into the other woman's hand. "They keep a lovely stable here. Quite the best in the county."
"I was told tomorrow there is to be a steeplechase," Annie shared, "which the Duchess will win, of course."
"Who told you she will win?"
"Oh, my brother - Captain Winters. He says she is far and away the best rider of all of them - and she knows the course the best, but that does not signify quite as much as how she can handle it. Sir Lewis was teasing him about it in the carriage here," she added, loyally, "but my brother would not hear it said otherwise."
"That is rather like Sir Lewis," her new friend agreed, still scratching behind the horse's ears. "What a compliment from the Captain - he rides very well himself." She paused and looked over at Annie. "You have a good eye for horses, Miss Winters - this is the Duchess's favorite."
"How do you know?"
She gave a brief chuckle. "I should hope that was obvious."
Annie turned and looked, really looked, at the woman to whom she'd been speaking and with no small embarrassment realized her error. "Your grace!"
The first (and last) time she had seen Joan Warren, she had been dressed to pay calls, and the meeting had been that of an instant - here, in the stable, without hat or pelisse, the Duchess was another woman entirely, very out of character with soft-dressed hair and a shawl around her shoulders, and a hunter nipping at her ear. "Pray do not trouble yourself about it," Joan assured her, smiling ear to ear and batting the animal away a little. "It is nice sometimes to not be recognized."
Annie had another thought. "Please do not think badly of my brother for that story about the carriage. He does not talk out of turn about you, I promise."
"I did not for one moment believe he did," the Duchess assured her. "And I am sure Montjoy enjoys being told he will win," she added, scratching the horse under his chin. "He loves it as much as I do."
