Movie Review: The Princess and the Matchmaker
Don’t believe the trailer; The Princess and the Matchmaker (Marital Compatibility) is really not a romantic comedy. It’s a historical romance with action, drama, intrigue, forged horoscopes, and some near-murders. You know, like the best sageuks always have.
This is a romance. In the best possible sense; two people running into each other, learning to see each other as people, and overcoming all obstacles to start a life together.
And boy, are there obstacles. Royalty can’t marry wherever they want, especially the princess who’s a concubine’s daughter and rumored to be bad luck. Such bad luck that she’s still unmarried at 17. Which, by the way, would have been historically rare, because making sure all the royal offspring were properly married off was one of the key sets of rites stabilizing the kingdom’s relationship with the Heavens.
...And that seems to be the problem, because Joseon is in a massive, starving drought, and the astrologers have declared the way to solve it is to rebalance yin and yang by having more people marry. The king must lead by example, and get his daughter a proper husband!
Cue the shenanigans.
Massive, plotty, sometimes deadly shenanigans. Because while Princess Song-hwa may have been born “unlucky”, there’s someone out there determined to make sure her luck goes from bad to worse. Including fiddling with the list of marriage candidates....
Good thing there’s an honest Inspector and saju expert, Seo Do-yoon, on the case. And in the right place at the right time to investigate when someone seems to be stalking the four final candidates. Said someone turns out to be our princess, who snuck out of the palace to at least see the men she’s supposed to be offered to before the marriage. Which means that Seo meets all of them as well, calculates their Four Pillars, and realizes something is horribly wrong with this list because none of them are good matches with the princess. And not just “not good”; horrible, indescribably bad fates await any of these pairings.
Who would deliberately set out to make an innocent girl’s life an unbearable existence? Seo is determined to find out.

Oh, and on an unrelated note....
This could be excellent imagery for a secret pirate/privateer hideout!

~ PAST
it’s long af whoops
[ TW: mentions of physical abuse, slight gore, death ]
apollo was born to a high-class noble family in hanyang, korea on what we know as august 6, 1397
growing up in the peak of the joseon dynasty and one of the country’s golden ages, there was not much the young boy needed, but rather everything that he wanted
his father was a high-ranking member of the city’s caste system, one of the generals that assisted in ushering in the new era
his childhood is spent alternating between school for preparation in aristocracy and basking in the social standards of the time ― while he isn’t old enough to begin more ‘dangerous’ tasks, the patriarch implements training in everything from horseback riding to whittling for apollo to enjoy
life isn’t good for him, it’s great ; he doesn’t have to worry about much, and when he does there’s people around him available to clear up any ‘misunderstandings’ in a heartbeat
still, as he grows older, a superiority complex begins to take hold of the young boy, coupled strangely with a boredom he had yet to experience before
the result? a horrible combination that begins to warp his personality in tidbits, before he fully ‘sinks in’ so to speak
by 12 his father has deemed him ready to embark on more trials outside of simple pleasantries. never mind the golden age of science and art ― apollo’s father was a militaristic man through and through, and he knew war would come one way or another
so the youth begins to learn of the knowledge of battle; how to wield a sword, proper fighting techniques, the instinct of survival ― such is beaten into him in more ways than one, excuses for failure reaching deaf ears and perfection being the only goal
this type of treatment does well to cause both vice and virtue for apollo; the once happy boy is twisted in a grasp of frost and cruelty, and yet he finds himself training ever harder and hardly taking heed to words outside of his father’s opinion
he’s 16, young and ablaze, a fire coursing through his veins despite his frigid approach. apollo’s beginning to make a name for himself, partaking in whatever challenges present themselves, discerning towards talks of a bright future when all he wanted was blood
his elders begin to take note of this and, under pleased recommendation from his father, ascend apollo to become apart of the high-ranking royal guard ordered to protect the king and his family
while he would rather be out on the battlefield (despite the age of scientific expansion, there was also trifles to be meddled in), apollo took the opportunity with steadfast determination and took his job as seriously as one could
he finds himself betrothed at age 18 on consideration by his father who is eager for a lineage, a fragile noble girl in all sense of the word being chosen as a ‘perfect fit’. apollo could hardly care, however  ― if he had his way, he would be married to his sword, yet he supposed a woman would do for the time being
still, time goes on with little interruptions; the beast marries the beauty, he’s promoted to personal guard of the youngest prince, and his often-times anger is allowed to be sated on whoever is unfortunate enough to end up in chains that day
yet, soon trouble begins to brew, although not with him ― tensions between korea and japan begin to rock the state, rumors of war falling over the distant hills being drunk up by the common rabble. apollo is eager for such to arrive, hoping to take part in what he sees as ‘festivities’, despite being obviously chained to protection over the 13 year old boy all considered ‘prince’
and yet this boy was the cause for much of his frustration ― opposed to when apollo was young, the prince was futile and weak, eager to take part in more pleasantries rather than learn of his future duties to the dynasty
such often enraged the elder, forced to bite his tongue in earnest of stepping out his ‘boundaries’ despite having much to say
trouble, however, spirals downwards quickly within his life ― with the prince turning 20 and him lingering atop 25, apollo would hope that the 5-year continuation from him first being assigned would only shape up the younger. however, it seems to be quite the opposite; the prince spends his time ‘play fighting’, as apollo calls it, and dragging his guard through the forest in daily hunts that hardly often accounted for anything due to his skill. on top of that, it is found that his young wife is infertile, and despite hardly caring for any child at all, she is cast out of the marriage and lowered within society’s eyes
yet one such hunting trip results in tragedy ― after the two embark on their routine that apollo had become all-too used to, they come across a herd of wild boars the prince is eager to slaughter. after attempting to quell his lineage to no avail, an argument ensues; the prince comments on how apollo is out of line, and he likewise comments that the royal is going to get himself killed ― unfortunately, it results on the attention of the boars being caught, and apollo hardly has time to get out of the way before he’s being battered and speared through with bone
the prince, in retaliation, runs away
spine broken, bleeding out on autumn leaves, apollo shifts back and forth through consciousness enough to make out an approaching figure before everything goes dark ― such a figure, unknown to him, would change his life (and death) forever
he awakes a day later in a home hidden by the shadows of the treetops, not far from hanyang. he believes he is dead, and yet the being waiting there for him discerns otherwise ― he is alive, just not in the traditional sense.
apollo spends a month with the mysterious figure, who he comes to know as his ‘sire’, and learns of his existence. of how he was destined to die, and came by much more powerful and much stronger. of how the figure had been stalking them for the perfect moment to strike, only to find another opportunity instead. the realization of him being ‘vampire’ surprisingly comes easy to apollo; he approaches his existence as a gift more than a curse, especially considering the abilities that come along with it.
when he returns home he is met with shock, remorse, celebration, and guilt, particularly from the young prince who had abandoned him. his story is simple― after being left to die by the royal, apollo managed to crawl to a nearby stream and patch his wounds with mud and leaves, obviously leaving out the ‘broken spine’ detail. his explanation as to how he had healed completely back to his healthy self? blessings from the gods, that of which was good enough to deem him fit for society
much to apollo’s pleasure, the prince was chastised and punished in a dutiful manner for his cowardice and betrayal. becoming used to his usual bloodlust that came from not feeding went easier than he expected as well ― the ‘lepers’ cast out provided well enough sustenance for apollo, and not a single soul bat an eyelash at their deaths.
ageing, however, was a different issue ― he could not stay 25 within the city for long, and yet religion played enough of a part in hiding such a fact. years passed and apollo gave praises to the gods for his ‘youthful’ appearance even at 32, noble families falling over him in an effort to obtain being part of his lineage, and yet he hardly cared to give them a glance ― to apollo, there were better things on the horizon, and he wanted to experience it all
so, what was the best thing to do? fake his death, obviously. superstition ran high in his community, so he simply walked off into the woods one day and never returned ― they would fret, apollo knew, but overtime they would simply reason that he was ‘reclaimed’ by the deities. in truth? he returned to the home he had first woken up to, only to find it empty ― his sire was nowhere to be found.
did he break down into tears? cry out in the dark? hardly; for a newborn vampire, apollo had nerves and determination of steel, and simply ‘set up camp’ for the time being. if he couldn’t live in the city, he would live where he could be free
apollo’s world is about as interesting as it can get after that ― he alternates between staying in woods to returning to hanyang after he’s sure every other generation has died out. the same story of being a ‘newcomer’ is told regardless, and no one ever questions it because they hardly know him. this sort of ‘schedule’ he has allows him to be both separated yet still grow with the times. he admits that the future was not exactly what he expected, and yet all-too exciting for vampire. time passes in the blink of an eye for an immortal, watching as his home of hanyang shifts in the modern city of seoul ― such a sight triggers something within apollo, and he realizes he too must change with the world
new york city is not the first choice on his list; rather, the vampire changes his name and attempts to travel to london as a more ‘immediate’ deviation. however, he is not received well ― altercations involving vampire covens within the city eventually push him out, solace within the european countries not found for long. the united states is next; it’s a melting pot, and exactly what apollo is looking for, yet new york catches his eye above most. deviating from his original plan of los angeles, the vampire is pleased at the anonymity of the city and the opportunities presented with it greatly
a chance encounter with 3 lone vampires including himself results in meeting aleksander and eventually being inducted into his coven. at first, apollo is thrown off by the sudden influx of ‘sociability’ that is expected, yet he soon finds it endearing enough and something he admires, even. he is one of the first to join up as a death dealer when the role is announced ― although his seductive nature and sadism is not attributed to only one species, apollo is all-too eager to sate the never ending lust for war and blood he finds the opportunity of in hunting with his  newfound brothers and sisters. even after the death dealers ‘officially’ disbanded, he still heeds the call of aleksander whenever needed, more than pleased to assist in whatever is required of him.

~ FACTS
his birth name is not apollo choi, and has been kept a secret and on the backburner since he was turned ― he sees it as his ‘past’ self and a chain to his current identity
after arriving in nyc, he’s since found a love for film (or rather ‘entertainment’ as a whole) and began his own movie studio, that of which skyrocketed in popularity and is now among some of the top ones in the country. he keeps himself separated from the majority of his employees so that he can ‘hand down’ the company to himself ― those necessarily close to him are fellow vampires, who he knows he can trust with his immortality
sometime after he was turned he came to realization that he was bisexual rather than straight. while he is a rather romantic individual and wishes for a lot, he’s scared of dedicated love with the way he is, and keeps his sexuality under wraps for fear of someone possibly using it against him
his overall personality is very sadistic and twisted ― he finds joy in the pain he causes others, depending on who they are, and isn’t one known for mercy among the death dealers
apollo believes in ‘ability’ more than ‘possibility’. it is partially one of the reasons he no longer is religious; he finds the belief in the supernatural on earth and the immortality they possess to be far against any idea of ‘god’ or ‘gods’
he was nicknamed ‘leo’ by aleksander due to his fiery passion and his bravery in what he does. he’s attempted to get tattoos of lions on his body, but finds that they forcibly heal due to his abilities

Ruler (Master of the Mask) Review Episodes 1 - 4: I am this country’s Crown Prince
Despite my huge disliking for the 30 minute short episodes (honestly, the first four episodes could have been consolidated into two episodes lol)… the first four episodes were good enough to spark my interest. What was surprisingly shocking was how the first episode focused SO MUCH on hiding the crown prince’s face, to only be discovered by the end of the first episode…. well… not a secret anymore. >.> Anyways…. I’m a little behind on schedule for this drama since I started a little late… opps… oh well… I’ll try to catch up since we’re already on episodes 9 and 10 this week!!! o.o I guess time to binge watch.
Tumblr media
Episode 1 and 2 were basically a shit ton of information jammed packed into 30 minutes to provide the following: 1) the backstory to explain the evil organization Pyeonsoo-hwe, 2) describe how the current king was an idiot to allow this organization to control him, and 3) set the stage for how the Crown Prince will constantly be in grave danger. We learn that the King is controlled by the evil organization through poisonous flowers, and the only way to survive is to continue the consumption of the poison. Shortly after the Crown Prince was born, Dae Mok (head of the Pyeonsoo-hwe) requested of the King for control of Joseon’s water. This can be symbolic in two ways: 1) Pyeonsoo-hwe wants to control Joseon’s water because water is the sustenance of life thus controlling the country, and 2) the Crown Prince’s horoscope was that of water, therefore, Pyeonsoo-hwe wants to control the next King of the country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously though guys…. I’m not surprised he’s a bad guy in this drama LMAO
For the first time in the King’s life, he decided to stand up against the organization… only to have his son poisoned. The King had to give up the country’s water in order to save his son, which miraculously allowed the baby Crown Prince to become immune to poison (obviously this will play a HUGE role later on). The King ordered to have his son’s face hidden to protect him. Hiding his identity will give the King the upper hand to “switch” his son between a substitute. Whoever sees the Crown Prince’s face is killed. Finally, the entrance of the grown up Crown Prince showed us how he has been sheltered all his life and he doesn’t understand why he has to hide his face; therefore, he wants to know the reasoning behind his mask. What I don’t understand is why would the King NOT tell his son his plans… but instead he sheltered his son despite wanting him to become “A TRUE KING?” Go figure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was interesting how the second lead female actress was introduced first before the main lead. The introduction of Hwa-Goon showcased her as a strong and independent woman looking out for her own interests. What was even more shocking was how all the hype surrounding the Crown Prince’s mask/hidden identity was quickly stripped away, when Hwa-Goon discovered his identity as the Crown Prince by sneaking into his secret place (she even managed to mark him too, OMFG). Hwa-Goon got off easily with the help of the Queen; however, what was interesting was how Hwa-Goon hid the truth of seeing the Crown Prince’s face from her grandfather. Basically, Hwa-Goon fell in love at first sight with the Crown Price and this will be her motive, for the next few episodes, for her “rebellious behavior” against her family.
Tumblr media
To put it short, episodes 2-3 were basically the Crown Prince disobeying his father and escaping outside, without his mask, to seek Professor Woo Bo to answer his questions regarding his mask/illness (Remember, Woo Bo was the professor who knew about poison). He was really adorable as he experienced amazing things walking through the market place for the first time without his mask, but then the poor baby had to witness the cruelty of the world - the suffering of the poor and sickly and the evil doing of the Pyeonsoo-hwe. The Crown Prince’s innocence (and foolishness) would lead him to meeting Lee Sun and Han Ga-Eun, as he tried to give water to a sick child. Instead, he witnessed how people fought over water that was controlled by the Pyeonsoo-hwe. He was even shot by an arrow because he was holding the stick… smdh. Luckily, the witty Ga-Eun saved him from his chasers and our naive Crown Prince fell-in-love-at-first-sight with Ga-Eun’s bravery and beauty!!! >.< (I love it when the guy falls head over heels in love with the girl first, lmao)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally the remaining lead cast were introduced in episodes 3 and 4, Han Ga-Eun and the other Lee Sun (Crown Prince’s name is also Lee Sun). Han Ga-Eun is a beautiful young lady who is very knowledgeable and kind to the commoners, despite her higher status as the daughter of an official. As for Lee Sun, he is the son of a poor butcher, but he is very smart and wants to study literature. Both were disciples of Professor Woo Bo and they lead the Crown Prince to meet the professor. However, Woo Bo didn’t answer the Prince’s question about his mask right away. Instead he gave him a riddle to solve about the drought and the water associated with Pyeonsoo-hwe. As he sought the answer to Woo Bo’s riddle, the Prince became closer to Ga-Eun and Lee Sun, while experiencing new things such as forming relationships (friends), unlike when he was kept away in the palace. Unfortunately for the Prince, everyone was searching for him… both his father and the evil organization. The King sent Chung-Woon, the son of his Guard and the Prince’s closest friend, to find his son (I feel so bad for Chung-Woon…. the freaking Prince made his job so fuckin difficult).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the Prince experienced the hardships of the people, his resolve to protect them strengthened - especially when Lee Sun’s father was imprisoned for stealing water to save his wife who was in labor. After Ga-Eun’s father tried to save Lee Sun’s father, the Crown Prince saved Lee Sun’s father from execution (tbh, he was totally badass and I was fangirling the whole time). However, this was all apart of Hwa-Goon’s plan to find the Prince after she revealed to her grandfather that the Crown Prince had escaped. Finally, the Crown Prince figured out the riddle with the help of the soldier Park Moo Ha and ordered him and Ga-Eun’s father to investigate Yangsucheong. Despite the Crown Prince’s intervention, Lee Sun’s father was still murdered even after the Prince stepped in to stop his father’s execution - thus leading to the Prince to reveal his real identity to Lee Sun… “I am this country’s Crown Prince.” I believe these were the most powerful words in the first four episodes as the Crown Prince has never revealed his identity to anyone… even his own friend. It’s very special that Lee Sun was the first person which implies that Lee Sun will play a very important role in the drama with the Crown Prince. The Prince vowed to Lee Sun that he will avenge his father’s death, and that Lee Sun should keep his jade pendant as proof of that promise. But, as they were about to leave, the sneaky bastards from Pyeonsoo-hwe surrounded them…. thus the ending of episode 4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tbh, I love how this guy just casually shows up everywhere on the roof.
So what do I think? Well for starters, I think the cast is very “promising” due to their liveliness and attractiveness (the boys and girls are definitely eye-candy lol). But I have to say, I’m not entirely impressed so far with the acting… but then again I’ve only watched the first 4 episodes >.>
I will say that I am greatly impressed by L’s performance as the commoner Lee Sun. I really felt his struggles as a butcher’s son who wants to pursue his dreams, but the cruel society doesn’t help the poor at all, therefore he conforms to what he can only scavenge. We can definitely see the parallel between the commoner Lee Sun and the Crown Prince Lee Sun. Obviously both guys like our adorable Ga-Eun, but the difference between the two guys is that Lee Sun is hesitant while the Crown Prince just dives right in with no shame (I mean… he’s the Crown Prince after all).
Tumblr media
A perfect example would be the fireflies scene… Lee Sun stares at her from afar but can’t look her in the eyes, while the Crown Prince is helplessly staring right at her (sighs… I already know where this love triangle is heading towards). I especially felt his deep sadness and pain when he saw his father’s body hung from the tree (and what was worse was that he was just finally confessing to his father that he will work even harder than before T.T). NO ONE… I REPEAT… NO ONE SHOULD EVER HAVE TO WITNESS SUCH A TERRIBLE SIGHT!! Despite being a genius, even geniuses go on a rampage when their vision is blinded by rage… we can’t blame the guy for wanting to kill those a**holes after the Crown Prince saved his father…
So far, Kim So Hyun’s character hasn’t really done anything lol other than being really cute ^^ … but it’s only been 4 episodes with 30 minutes of content >.> I’m sure much more has happened in the next few episodes. I have to say that Yoon So Hee is doing a pretty good job of acting Hwa Goon cause I hate her guts for being the cause of Lee Sun’s father’s death… (I laughed a little bit too hard when the Crown Prince walked right past her to Ga-Eun and she was so excited too, lol)
Tumblr media
Overall, I believe this drama has great potential to be an amazing historical drama… as well as… it has great potential to flop too if things go out of hand. The plot is a bit messy and the Crown Prince is just too naive for his own good at the moment, but the gist of the story is that the current King is pretty much useless against the organization, so our Crown Prince will have to grow up soon to become a wise ruler.
