Owls are fascinating birds! Not only do their feathers give an impression of ears and their eyes are on the front of their faces instead of sideways like most of the other birds, they're also connected to a whole lot of mythology and thus perfect companions for halloween and samhain ;) It is said that the call of the little owl ("Athene noctua" - what a name! :D) sounds a bit like "koo-witt" which our ancestors would have interpreted as "Come with me", or in german "Komm mit!". This and the fact that the birds would have been attracted by lights shining in the dark led to the conclusion that little owls announced death, luring dying peoples souls to come with them. Now we know insects love to flutter around lights in the night and owls see that as a perfect opportunity for a snack. Ur Ockulta dagboken, Furusund den 13 juni 1904: "En underlig dag. Lillan sjuk, men blev bättre sedan Sigrid masserat henne. På aftonen besök av artisten Nyman. Sedan kom brev från Harriet att hon återvänder till oss på Furusund om Måndag. Straxt efter hördes en hornuggla, och när jag gick att se efter den flög en stor fågel över vårt tak, och var kanske ugglan. Jag sov oroligt om natten; vaknade och erfor en hemsk beklämning fastän solen gått in i rummet. Sigrid hade talat om spökerierna här på Isola Bella. (Fem slåtterfolk hade sett en svart fru mitt i solskenet. Andra hade sett en vit och kallade henne Fru Lageheim.)
