Owls are fascinating birds! Not only do their feathers give an impression of ears and their eyes are on the front of their faces instead of sideways like most of the other birds, they're also connected to a whole lot of mythology and thus perfect companions for halloween and samhain ;) It is said that the call of the little owl ("Athene noctua" - what a name! :D) sounds a bit like "koo-witt" which our ancestors would have interpreted as "Come with me", or in german "Komm mit!". This and the fact that the birds would have been attracted by lights shining in the dark led to the conclusion that little owls announced death, luring dying peoples souls to come with them. Now we know insects love to flutter around lights in the night and owls see that as a perfect opportunity for a snack. The fox, also called "Reineke" or "Reinhart" in the traditional german fables, is regarded as clever and tricky, even deceitful, always stealing others' food... Over the past years many videos emerged on youtube and such, of people having a pet fox, or pictures of beautiful ladies posing with a tamed specimen. It's great to see how the picture of the fox changed from the tapeworm-ridden rabies-infested vermin to a more graceful one. Although I wouldn't recommend having a pet fox for the sake of all your belongings ;) These guys bite, steal your stuff and poop all over it :P And still, foxes are fascinating creatures, sharing houses with badgers and even shelducks.
