Copper cannot be mined quickly enough to keep up with current U.S. policy guidelines to transition the country's electricity and vehicle infrastructure to renewable energy, according to a University of Michigan study. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law in 2022, calls for 100% of cars manufactured to be electric vehicles by 2035. But an electric vehicle requires three to five times as much copper as an internal combustion engine vehicle -- not to mention the copper required for upgrades to the electric grid. "A normal Honda Accord needs about 40 pounds of copper. The same battery electric Honda Accord needs almost 200 pounds of copper. Onshore wind turbines require about 10 tons of copper, and in offshore wind turbines, that amount can more than double," said Adam Simon, U-M professor of earth and environmental studies. "We show in the paper that the amount of copper needed is essentially impossible for mining companies to produce."

“Teslas are the safest cars on the road, but most people don’t know that,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter) last year. The superlative is typical of the billionaire, and the automaker itself, which boasts that its vehicles “are engineered to be the safest in the world.”
But while Tesla’s cars routinely receive top safety ratings, including from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, accident statistics show that the brand has the highest rate of accidents in which at least one car occupant is killed, according to a new report from the auto research firm iSeeCars.

Analyzing fatal collisions from 2017 to 2022 involving 2018 to 2022 car models, the group identified the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model Y as two of the most dangerous cars on the road by occupant fatality rate. Though models from Hyundai, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, Porsche, and Honda occupied the top five spots on the list, the Tesla Model Y, a mid-size SUV, came in sixth, with a fatal accident rate 3.7 times higher than the average car, and 4.8 times higher than the average SUV. The Model S rate is double that of the average car.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
The auto company had 5.6 fatal accidents per billion miles traveled by its vehicles, narrowly edging out Kia, with 5.5 per billion miles, as the brand with the overall highest rate of deadly accidents. This, the iSeeCars study notes, is “despite Tesla’s advanced driver-assist technology,” with features including so-called Autopilot and Full-Self Driving (FSD), which are meant to reduce human error. The former is a basic system including cruise control and automated lane-changing on freeways, while FSD allows a Tesla to “drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention,” per the company’s language. Both require the continued supervision of an attentive driver who can override the software.
Karl Brauer, an executive analyst with iSeeCars, said in the report that new cars overall are safer than they’ve ever been, and that most of the vehicle models on their lists “received excellent safety ratings, performing well in crash tests.” Therefore, he added, their elevated accident rates likely “reflect a combination of driver behavior and driving conditions.”
The study did not factor in the use of advanced systems such as Tesla Autopilot and FSD, but their shortcomings are well-documented, and Tesla accidents in which one of these features was engaged have triggered a wave of lawsuits, as well as regulatory scrutiny. Both NHTSA and the Department of Justice are investigating whether Tesla misled customers to believe that Autopilot and FSD is more dependable than it truly is. Critics say that drivers who assume their Tesla can operate safely and with total autonomy tend to become complacent or distracted — and then fail to take manual control when necessary.
This hasn’t stopped Musk from repeatedly promising, as he has for over a decade, that Tesla is close to a version of FSD which can safely operate without any human oversight. In October, he doubled down on this promise, unveiling a design for an autonomous two-seater “Robotaxi” (or “Cybercab”) without a steering wheel. He offered few specifics about how Tesla would be able to compete with companies that already have active fleets of autonomous taxis, like Google subsidiary Waymo, though he predicted the Tesla model would be in production before 2027, while acknowledging that he tends “to be a little optimistic with time frames.”
But for the moment, Tesla drivers are getting into fatal accidents with higher frequency than other drivers. Brauer commented that across the board in the automotive industry, improved safety features “are being countered by distracted driving and higher rates of speed, leading to rising accident and death rates in recent years.” No matter how well-made, a car can’t compensate for an irresponsible person in the driver’s seat.

(To start, I’m sorry about this super technical rant about the regulations, but there are a few interesting takeaways from them)
Cars are smaller in dimensions AND weight, which is something that I personally think will be better because the cars now are gigantic
More safety measurements are taken, and the fact that, according the the FIA, they’ve been working in it especially since Silverstone 2022, and have been working on increasing the load that is for the safety of the drivers is something we all love to hear.
I heard something, and this was the main point of interest for me. So the head of Powertrains in the FIA mentioned that for the engine, the FIA discussed the regulations with 5 engine manufacturers: Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari, Ford and Audi. These 5 were the only ones manufacturers involved in the engine design and regulation making. The reason why it’s very interesting, because there are 6 engine manufacturers. And Honda was not apparently as involved, and this will be very interesting for Aston Martin.
Apparently also, the engine manufacturer have all (all 6) wanted more electrical involvement, for their road cars R&D
So yeah, 2026 will be very interesting for sure with these and active front and rear wings, in addition to the comments made by the teams about “how un-drivable” the cars are and how everyone was complaining. So we’ll see

Judy Cameron still remembers getting the telegram that marked her first offer to fly planes for a major commercial carrier. Pacific Western Airlines had come calling, writing her a "congratulations" and inviting her to sit down with the interview board.
Forty-five years later, Cameron — who was Air Canada's first female pilot — has 23,000 hours of flying, a scholarship, and an Order of Canada membership to her name.
After a fulfilling 40-year career, Cameron recalls the struggles she faced in the early years and the efforts still needed to encourage more young women to enter aviation — especially the cockpit, which remains extremely male-dominated.
As of January, nearly eight percent of Air Canada's pilots were women--better than the U.S. average of 4.9 percent, according to a 2022 report from the Centre for Aviation, an Australia-based market research firm. The figure is also much higher than the tally just a few decades ago, when female flight crew stood out glaringly.
Cameron developed a taste for adrenalin early on, buying a motorcycle in Grade 12 and later riding her Honda Hog to the University of British Columbia most days, "even in the rain." After her first year studying arts, she found a summer job interviewing pilots at small airports for a Transport Canada survey. On her first day in 1973, one of them invited her to hop on board.
Cameron dropped out of UBC and applied to a two-year aviation program at Selkirk College. "I got on my motorcycle and drove eight hours to Castlegar … and when I got there the head of the aviation program had a motorbike. That's probably how I got into the course." Raised by a single mother in Vancouver, Cameron had grown up in a one-room apartment. Television and cars were luxuries they couldn't afford.
When Cameron flew her first passenger, in a two-seat, single-engine Cessna 150 training aircraft, it was her mom in the seat beside her. College wasn't an easy time. "It was hard, doing my training and being in a classroom full of guys. I was always the odd one out," she said. "It was so isolating."
Following graduation, Cameron found pilot work at a pulp and paper company in 1975, but the board of directors wouldn't let her fly. She wound up helping with dispatch and office management, occasionally managing to get a flight in when a subsidiary operated the plane. After switching to a job as a passenger agent at B.C.'s Airwest Airlines — with infrequent turns in the cockpit — Cameron was eventually hired by a small regional service in Slave Lake, Alta., where she flew a Douglas DC-3 airliner — a big break, due to the larger size of the plane.
Four months later, the company went bankrupt — the paycheques bounced — and executives at the carrier that took over its routes weren't thrilled about her presence. "The chief pilot there basically didn't want to hire me. But he said, 'At least the big airlines won't hire you.'"
The airline stationed her in Inuvik, N.W.T., and proceeded to lay her off. She was later rehired as a dispatcher and allowed to fly periodically.
Overall, though, she said the experience was positive and the pilots respectful, some of them serving as mentors. However, the company was no exception to the years-long failure of most airlines to provide uniforms for pregnant crew members, including Cameron in 1984. The shortcoming was a milder example of some of the gender inequalities that persisted at various carriers into the 1970s, including strict weight limits, age ceilings, and marriage bans for flight attendants.
Today, Air Canada aviators may be asked to submit a note from their doctor every two weeks confirming they are fit to fly, starting in the 20th week of pregnancy. Pilots are considered fit to fly until week 30, "in the case of a normal pregnancy," according to Transport Canada regulations. Many of Air Canada's 410 female pilots — out of 5,230 in total — see Cameron as an inspiration.
Since retiring in 2015, Cameron has barely slowed down. The Oakville, Ont., resident has taken a course on aerobatics — "loops and rolls and Cuban eights" — in Florida. And she's actively involved in the Air Canada scholarship program in her name. Launched in 2019 and backed partly by flight training company CAE, the fund helped support 13 young women training to become pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers last year, granting them $5,000 apiece. Education in the sector is notoriously expensive.
Last year, 12 percent of new pilot licenses issued in Canada went to women, according to the Institute for Women in Aviation Worldwide. Cameron also serves as a director of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation, which offers mentorship and highlights women's achievements in aviation.

Dave Robson explains how new Team Principal Vowles has 'refreshed' atmosphere at Williams
James Vowles only started work as Williams Team Principal in March, but according to the team’s Head of Vehicle Performance, Dave Robson, he has already created a whole “new” and “refreshed” atmosphere at the Grove outfit. After finishing at the bottom of the standings in 2022, Williams made the decision to part ways with Team Principal Jost Capito – along with Technical Director FX Demaison – with Vowles later announced as his replacement. HALF TERM REPORT: Williams – Can they continue their 2023 progress after some encouraging signs? Vowles came from Mercedes where he had been a part of eight world championship victories serving as their Strategy Director. He had also worked in engineering and strategy roles for the 2009 world champions Brawn GP, as well as Honda and BAR. And speaking in Hungary last month, Robson – who has been at Williams since 2015 – was asked about Vowles’ impact on the team since coming onboard. He responded: “James has brought a wealth of experience and knowledge. “And also, I think, a whole new approach which is really starting to spread around the factory. I think that’s probably gone hand in hand with Alex [Albon] maturing and becoming quite calm and consistent, level-headed and James brings something similar. Robson says Volwes has brought a new atmosphere to Williams since joining the team “He obviously also brings clear knowledge of, as we talked about, what Andrew [Shovlin] and his colleagues have got at MGP. And so, it really feels like we've now got a clear plan for the next few years. “That's very much rooted in recent top-level experience, and now we're just going to put that into action. But in the short term, yeah, the whole atmosphere is new, and it's refreshed. And he also gave insight into what it was like working with Williams leader.
