Back Home Festival Named Mountain State's Top Annual Event

It seems cruising those country roads heading home really is that popular in West Virginia, a state that is home to numerous popular fairs and festivals each and every year. From the Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon to Bridge Day events in Oak Hill, andf the winter wonderland that is the Oglebay Festival of Lights to the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg - there are incredible events both great and small found in all corners of the Mountain State. In 2021, WV Living Magazine selected the State Fair as its top event. The 2022 winner? Well, that one is a little closer to “home.” The announcement was made today by WV Living Magazine that the Back Home Festival in New Martinsville, an annual three-day celebration of music, memories, and fun, was selected as the state's best. “Honestly, one of the things I'm most proud of is that last year, the winner was the West Virginia State Fair, and we beat the State Fair so that's pretty exciting to think about,” said Robby Parsons, lead organizer and executive director of the Wetzel County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Voting was conducted at wvliving.com and fans selected the Back Home Festival as their top event in its Best of West Virginia contest. That's pretty esteemed company, but the Back Home Fest has earned that right. Starting in 2017 in New Martinsville, each year the festival has seen an increase in attendance, along with the quality of acts taking the stage. Recently, Back Home's Facebook made its first festival lineup announcement—the Sam Grisman Project, which will hit the state Friday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. There will be more announcements to follow as Parsons pretty much has the three-day lineup wrapped up and ready to go. “It's gone really well,” Parsons said. “I'm pretty much done with the booking. There are a couple of loose ends to tie up but we're real close to releasing the entire lineup.” The Sam Grisman Project was the first lineup announcement made by Back Home for the 2023 event Slow Morph of the Lineup Started in 2017 as the Back Home Appalachian Arts & Music Festival, #BackHome began with primarily bluegrass artists throughout its lineup, with a couple of outliers in terms of genre. The mixture always worked to the delight of the crowd, but it was the crowd where Parsons started noticing the potential need for a change. “I first noticed it a few years ago, when we did the festival, we started having a lot of, for lack of a better term, hippies attending the festival,” Parsons said. “So we started catering to that a little bit more and putting more jam bands in the lineup. “Right now, I'd say we're probably 70-30 in terms of jam bands to bluegrass so while we started as a bluegrass festival it's kind of morphed into a more diverse thing.” Parsons noted that there's been a small amount of pushback from “maybe one or two people” but, overall, the reception to the change has been positive. It's done nothing to diminish the quality of acts at the venue or the positive vibe in the crowd. Speaking of the crowd, the field in which Back Home is held can contain around 20,000 fans. For more than a few of the bigger named acts, that field has brimmed to near capacity, showing just how large this festival has grown. Positive Impact This Best of West Virginia honor isn't the first time Parsons has been part of recognition by WV Living. Two years ago, the festival itself was voted the best fair/festival/event for the Northern Panhandle, and Parsons himself was selected as the Community Champion for the same. It's easy to see why, as the festival has grown into a significant economic boon every summer for Wetzel County. Parsons noted that direct spending through tourism increased over 100 percent in Wetzel County since the festival's inception. The next closest county? That would be Monongalia, home to West Virginia University. Its percentage increase was in the 40s. That's a big boost. “Since we started back in 2017, it's been a big boost for the economic structure of our county,” Parsons admitted. “We've had the greatest growth of direct tourism spending in the state as far as counties go. “That alone tells me something and, I know when we didn't have the festival one year because of COVID, we had businesses tell us they really missed not having that three-day jolt for their business.” Fear not fans and businesses alike. So there’s this small town in West Virginia called Lewisburg. Vogue named it “coolest small town” in WV and it definitely has earned that titled. We visit often to see friends and loved ones and my heart aches a little ever time we have to leave. It’s nestled between mountains, a quaint downtown area reminiscent of Stars Hallow from Gilmore Girls. The town also voted to be a safe zone for trans individuals before it was even legal! I want to call it home one day.

A new path...

Before this year, I’ve always been self-taught and a solitary practitioner, briefly meeting with others such as a little group in Nicholas county, WV for a few of the Sabbats or for an occasional full moon. Mark and I have had some wonderful ceremonies for some of the Sabbats. We tried to keep each one. Our favorites turned out to be Maebon. Sometimes at the lake near Summersville, and once at the home place, once even at the place at Springdale.

They were always magical and always good results. Mark leaned toward Druidism and I leaned toward a mixture that I created to suit myself. Norse deities and the rune ring and the fire, well, and tree. Sometimes, it would be more of a Charge of the Goddess and spellworking kind of thing.

For Summer Solstice 1916, we went to the homeplace and Mark built a fire. I cast the rune ring and Mark created the inner circle in the Druid way he liked, raising the dome. We honored Baldur and Sunna, envisioned Dagaz and Sowilo, quoted our poetry to the God and Goddess and did our spellworking for wealth, wisdom, Harmony, Security, and Health.-- the fe, vit, frith grith, heil kind of thing. Then we offered Meade and shared a drink and toast with the Gods and pulled a rune to see if our gift was received, got a good omen and then pulled runes for what might come and was accomplished. We got Storm and Gebo. And as we put out the fire, the rain began.

The next day, we were in Lewisburg and we traded in our car for a truck and it was still raining. Across from where we bought the truck was a trailer park and the thought crossed my mind that it would not be a bad place to live. We went home ad htat night, the town we lived in, Rainelle, flooded. And over the next couple of months,, we moved from that town to the trailer park and had a truck to move with.

Mark and I had many more ceremonies on the homeplace. Maebon, 2020, we were once again holding our ceremony at our fire ring at the little place on McCarty. We had our circle and prepared to go home, when a neighbor, Eddy, came up the road and said a huge tree fell right behind him. It barely missed him. The wind had been up and there had been rain.

It was nearly midnight when we managed to leave, as the tree had blocked the road. It was the only day, Mark and I missed playing our ukuleles -- we had brought the drums, not the ukuleles that day.

Keeping the sacred eight and the full moons together with Mark had been very good. Now that he was gone, I was carrying on by myself. I kept up my morning rite and drew my runes or cards each day -- or read the I-Ching. But the sacred eight spokes of the wheel were more difficult.

And one day in February, I decided to joint OBOD. The first time I decided to be part of a group and accept teaching that originated with someone else.

I am learning the Druid’s prayer and the Peace Keeping. Eventually, this will blend with some of my own practices, but for now, I’m doing this to the exclusion of all else except Frigga’s Hearthfire and morning greeting of All-Mother and of the Day that I’ve done for so very long. I began on the Pagan path late in 1999. Twenty-two years. And now I begin again. This is very close to Mark’s way of circle. He is my Druid, Briallason. And in the visualizations, he becomes the Druid I meet in the sacred grove.

It's pink and it's affordable- what could be better? 1939 cottage in Lewisburg, West Virginia has 2bds, 1ba, $189K. The only thing I don't like is that it was built too close to the road.

Cozy sun room even has a little fireplace.

A table fits here in the corner and so does a desk, so it's very compact.

The owner was really into mosaic stone work- check out the floor and feature wall.

Two open arches between the living room and kitchen add architectural interest.

Look at that cute little fan! I never saw such tiny blades.

The kitchen is small, but everything you need, including laundry is packed in there. It's cute and it certainly has a close work triangle.

This is the smaller bedroom, so it would be Bd. #2. They're not using the primary bedroom as a bedroom.

They've actually got a sauna in what is supposed to be the primary bedroom. Apparently, they're leaving it b/c they've left the instruction sheet in it. So, that's nice, but if you need to use this as a bedroom, it's going to have to find another home. Maybe in the sun room?

The 3 pc. bath is small, but it has a nice glass bowl sink and a mosaic wall.

There's a lovely covered porch on the back of the house.

This is the driveway and side entrance.

The lot is 8,276 sq. ft.

Looks like a nice area. The house feels like it's in a private wooded area, but it's really not.

Vice President Mike Pence was in Lewisburg, West Virginia, Wednesday where he gave a speech that tore into Manchin. Pence attacked Manchins vote against the tax bill and then continued: But its not just the tax cut. Senator Joe Manchin has voted no time and again on the policies that West Virginia needs. When the time came to repeal and replace the disaster of Obamacare, Joe voted no. When we empowered West Virginia to defund Planned Parenthood, Joe voted no.

My family has known Joes for a long time. My father was a prominent attorney who was involved in Democratic politics. Joes uncle, A. James, was the flamboyant secretary of state forever when I was kid, with his floral ties and wide-brimmed fedoras and his erudite 19th-century vocabulary (he once called a man who had sullied the states good name a scurrilous jackanapes). So yes, I have a soft spot for him.

After this exchange with Pence, you should too. More liberal Democrats, Democrats who are far better positioned to be Trump critics, can learn a thing or two from how he handled this.
