A Court of Mischief and Purpose Chapter Eighteen (Loki x fem! Reader Hiddlesverse Crossover Series)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Series Summary: Based on Sarah J Mass's A Court of Thorns and Roses series with the Tom Hiddleston characters. You are a woman of 1880's in Aldwinter in Essex, England, dying of tuberculosis. Never to be married to the local Lusty Vicar. When Loki appears to you and offers to heal you...if you spend a week of every month with him
Chapter Summary: Longing to return to your husband and friends, you take the next steps for revenge, both big and small. Your powers perform a miracle for the town to get you into their good graces. Then, an unexpected invitation arrives.
Word Count: 4K (for me, that's short. Don't wanna write super long chapter bc I fear people hate it)
Chapter Warnings: No smut, but mentions of sex and masturbation with references to and deconstructing the canon events The Essex Serpent the book, and the show, including not portraying Cora or Will or their affair sympathetically so if you don't like that don't read this, discussions of cheating and a brief mention of the fear of sexual violence. Loki gets jealous for a hot second. Some angst, but some humor. Supporting Women's Wrongs. Reader causing problems on purpose. Portrayals of religion. My saltiness slips out into roasts.

The first letter had its destination. You got out a piece of paper, writing down the address of the seminary that appointed him the vicarage of Aldwinter. Then you began writing.
“Dear sirs,
I have some unfortunate news. I suspect the Reverend William Ransome is not of moral character fitting his position here. He is engaged to marry…”
You hesitated. Thinking carefully, if you signed it with your name, Will would know it was you. No, you couldn’t risk that. You continued writing.
“... a Miss Y/L/N.  However, an intact love letter from a woman named Mrs.Seaborne was discovered in his possession. It is dated during his still current engagement to Ms. Y/L/N. It is enclosed here. There must be an inspection in his vicarage to see if he encouraged Mrs. Seaborne and if there were other incidents. If found that he behaved in a manner not befitting godly character, it is doubtful he can have the right to sacred orders and to function as a public figure of the church at least in Aldwinter.”
Sincerely,
An anonymous member of the congregation.”
Stuffing both this paper and the first letter in an envelope, you then sealed with wax. Then wrote down the address of the council.
You hurried to the post office, paid postage, and quickly mailed it out before anyone could see. Too many talking mouths.
You heard Loki congratulate you.
‘I couldn’t have done better, my dear. You’ve learned from the best. You’re a wife to the god of mischief indeed.’
Once you got home, though you skimmed over the book of Matthew beside the fire, you weren’t focused on the scripture. You would have to figure out where to send the other two letters. One would have to get to someone in town, anyone who attended church would do. You’d figure out the how later.
But the third one would require research… Mrs. Seaborne’s ambition in life was to become recognized as a woman of science.
Too bad sleeping with another’s fiancee typically results in a woman’s utter ruin.
And now you had the evidence in hand. You had to figure out where to send it to. Which department of science? Who received her research? What if she wasn’t sending it at all, what then? Would she gather up her fossils as Stella loved to gather up seashells?
Your thoughts then returned to Stella… your friend who shared a fate with you.
Had you not been there…it would have been her. She would have married Will and fell in love with him. Been the dutiful, obedient wife who carried the Word in her mouth and his children in her womb. Stella, stricken with consumption, about to die…and for William to repay her devotion and life with him with inconstancy. Doomed to do nothing about her husband’s obsessive lust for another woman and in fact, smile at it.
His happiness was what mattered. His happiness. Not hers.
And she would have borne it without even speaking a complaint. She’d be their matchmaker like a dutiful little wife all while she never let her heart sway to another man, much less bring him to the marriage bed that her upright, moral, virtuous, godly husband had the freedom to. The marriage bed Will would have set on fire and destroyed into bits all while she smiled and laid in it and let him burn her into ashes.
She’d want them to be together. Content and not the least bit unhappy that she never mattered to Will in the first place. She’d even attempt suicide- end her own life- so they could be together!
The perfect wife to a man who couldn’t be decent.
…what would she get out of it?
At the end of the day, who was kissing their lover, and who was the one about to drown?
And even for her selfless and complete and utter devotion to Will…it wouldn’t be the same from him. He wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice or control himself for Stella…not one bit. He was a man who did not deserve her. Did not deserve the great, selfless love she had for everyone in her life…even you.
You were the same not long ago. The self-sacrificial, dutiful, passive wife who wanted nothing but his happiness. That was why you agreed to that bargain on that fateful day.
You had to avenge Stella. Even if now it wouldn’t happen, you had to. For you and she were one half of one whole fate. And in this one, the abandoned woman would not passively sit until she killed herself for such selfish monsters.
If Stella were the one destined to not fight….you would.  For her sake as well as yours.
You paused, remembering how frightened she was in Grendel’s cave the last you saw her.
‘How is Stella?”’ you asked Loki. You knew you asked him a hundred times before. And he would tell you.
‘She was having nightmares keeping her awake. Flinching, bursting into tears and fits of great fear of anything involving Grendel…but she is getting better.’
“When will she be home? Her family keeps asking after her…they mourn her as if she died. I cannot stay long with them without weeping. It destroys me every time”
“She was in her house when Grendel took her…she doesn’t feel safe there now.  So she wants to stay here...”
“Without it being safe for Thomas to deliver letters…They think she’s your whore for good now.”
“If I forced Stella to be my whore, I think my wife would have something to say about it. Not to mention Jonathan.”
“Oh, he’d say something. His fists can make a whole sentence itself.”
His warm laughter made you smile over the large, thick book in your lap.
“Oh, Loki, bless him-I knew from when he gave her those flowers. But I don’t think he’ll admit he is besotted with her already,” you added on.
“Jonathan is not a man who will easily admit anything, why else did he become a spy?”
In the night, you couldn’t sleep. Your mind was still racing, refusing to shut off. You went to the window in your room, sitting on a chair to stare out. You looked outside at the country darkness outside. For only the stars and moon above showed any light on the little town.
Out of curiosity, your senses reached out. You sensed Will was not asleep at all and not in his house. He was in the field alone of all places! And standing before a bonfire. Then you could sense he was speaking…
“Oh Lord, I renounce my sins…”
Atoning and cleansing his sins? Looks like he was going to need a lot more firewood then.
You stopped your powers. But you went back to here and looked up at the starry sky. You missed them- all of them. Sif’s little glares when something annoyed her. Stella trying on the Asgardian dresses. Robert making quips as he lit a cigarette. Thomas happily chatting over whatever device he was working on Jonathan observing everything stoically, but when someone spoke gently to him, a beautiful smile on his face. Hal’s bright eyes as he taught everyone how to fight with a sword during training. Thor’s loud laughter. Queen Frigga coming in to ask over all of you, for it was her role as an AllMother to be Mother to all.
And Loki- dear, funny, charming, mischievous Loki, your True Love, your husband…you missed him most of all.
You had to be patient. It would only motivate you further. Once this was all done and you figured it out, you would return to see all of them without a minute’s delay.

The hairy dog that kept humping things was approaching your front yard.
His pet was with him.
“Ah, dear Reverend, will you stop by for tea?” your mother hurried off from your gardening together to greet Will.
“Yes, you are welcome,” you repeated, though your voice felt small.
He was in his overcoat and his formal green vest. The spaniel barked at his feet, tail wagging but held close thanks to the leash. You smiled and leaned down to pet him, for had you become married to the Lusty Vicar, the dog would be the most loyal man in your life.
“I only have time to stop and say my hellos- especially for the lady here, please,” Will greeted, his eyes shining at you.
You returned up. You fluttered your eyes down in a picture of docility and chastity.
“It’s nice to see you too,” you greeted sweetly.
He then did something you were surprised he did in your mother’s presence. With his free hand, he found the ends of your skirt and gently tugged you a little closer to him. He smiled up at you.
“Why, how are you, my dear?” he asked.
“Doing alright,” you answered.
“I hear your headaches have been better, are you getting rest?”
“Yes, plenty as I can, Will,” you answered.
“That’s good, my darling,” he replied.
You heard Loki cut in.
“That’s MY word for you!”
“Hush!” you sent back
“I just sent a telegram to Bishop Anderson. He has been promised there will be no disruptions and he will marry us next month,” he announced, his voice soft and almost on the edge of seduction. Completely unaware of the letter you sent to the council and the disaster about to hit him in at least a few weeks.
Loki cut in again- “You do know that every Thursday he goes to the ocean and relieves his seed in it to thoughts of Cora!”
“I’m not surprised- hush!” you silently urged your husband again.
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” you replied, smiling at him.
“Are you going to be at the dance tonight, Y/N?”
The thought of being in there and having to endure potentially being in the same room as Mr. I-Can’t-Think-Straight-Around-Her and Cora and not screaming at both of them made you feel nauseous.
But he didn’t need to know that now.
“Oh, of course, I shall!” you replied.
“Ah, then I hope to dance with my wife then,” he prodded.
“We are not yet married,” you reminded him meekly, folding your hands and looking demurely down.
“Yet you are mine already in my heart. For nothing shall stop me from joining you in Holy Matrimony and for us together to spend a life doing God’s will. I shall escort you there tonight, Y/N,” he promised.
He wasn’t wrong about the first bit, as Grendel told you.
He took your hand and kissed it. You grinned up at him with a loving look on your face.
Yes, Y/N, smile. Be polite. Charming even. And never let him know you want him dead.
Then, urging his dog forward with his leash, he went about his way through the brown and white town.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
That night was the promised dance. You kept your word and went with him.
So many others would gather- that dance hall with candlelight that made the brown walls orange. Some people dressed in dark colors, but young people eager to flirt and laugh. Tables full of punch, cake, and fruit. A piano constantly playing.
And Will in a tuxedo like the other men, ever the picture of handsomeness. You had three dances with him. The number permitted for an engaged couple. As tempting as it was to grab the neck of his bow tie and strangle him with it was there, you fought it back.
No, you looked up at him and smiled. Curtsied at the end of dances as people clapped around you.
Of course, Cora was there in her grey dress. But when she arrived, you put on a smile and curtsied and greeted her like any other person. Not talking to her more than you had to. You kept your eyes down for the rest of the party- sensing her like you were in the ocean and felt the presence of a shark. You knew Will would still stare at her intensely in your own presence. You would pretend like you didn’t know, and keep your eyes down again like a docile lady with no thoughts but love and marriage.
Maybe he had you both in boxes. For surely he thought you didn’t consent to be in Loki’s bed and that was why he pitied you as opposed to hated you. There was also the loophole- you were still considered chaste even though you weren’t. Since you didn’t want to bed Loki but were forced to.
You were his Virgin. Cora was his Whore.
He wanted to marry you because you fit being the chaste wife who sipped tea and quoted Philippians. And he could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted with Cora. One for his house and the other for his hand. Cora couldn’t be that wife for the vicarage. And you couldn’t be the one who could spit out some stupid science fact to make his penis erect.
He wanted both. To have his cake and eat it too, like what Robert would say.
But as the party progressed…it occurred to you that you might be a little wrong at least on your part. Will’s touch on you was still proper- an arm to drape yours over. But only slightly more amorous, sometimes a hand to touch your back. Sometimes a brief, chaste kiss. Becoming slightly more amorous.
It then hit you…Did Will…lust after you?  It wasn’t just chaste affection or passion he felt for you-  but did it include the Lusty Vicar’s Lusty Penis?
You stopped for a moment and mused on it. Will left you to talk to some friends, promising he’d be back.
Honestly, It flattered you to be desired. And you had to have the shield up to not hear Loki’s complaints of jealousy right now.
You knew Will wouldn’t urge you to his bed before marriage. At the most extreme, not publicly.
But…what if…what if that passion was still there? With the wedding re-planning, you knew it would happen soon. If you let time slip, you will find yourself a bigamist! You knew the Lusty Vicar would live up to his nickname and want to fuck you right after you said your I do’s!
At the most extreme, if that happened…you could say no. Will had done some disgusting and reprehensible things…but you couldn’t imagine him forcing himself on you.
Perhaps you could tell him “no” on your wedding night. Tell him you were still distressed from being the Trickster God’s whore. Tell him you weren’t ready to consummate your (second) marriage. Will would very likely comply.  Maybe even tell him to sleep on the couch alone. Now- there was a funny picture! You- safe and snug in that blue bed and asleep. And the tall, hairy man curled up on his couch as much as his height would allow him. The cold air deflating the Lusty Vicar’s Lusty Penis like a balloon after a party.
But…how long would that last? He’d respect you but suspect something was up. Then, how could you discreetly get revenge on him after you wedded him?
You had to cool him.
But looking up, you saw with silent horror that he was staring at Cora again. There was a piano playing-a dance theme like you heard in your old dream. A song urging them to dance. Rage burned in the bottom of your stomach.
He needed not only cooling but the equivalent of a swift kick to the groin- and you had an idea of how to do both at once.
Looking over, you noted the tablecloth of the refreshment table was a dark green. Your True Love’s favorite dark green.
Perfect.
You went up to the refreshment table for punch, taking a little cup and going to the glass bowl. A few guests talked nearby- a couple of gentlemen including a young surgeon the town had.  Dark hair and a round face, an apparent friend of the woman who ruined your life, and an expert in new ways of his profession. Chatting about amputation or other polite topics.
You then looked down and pretended to see the deep green cloth.
You dropped the glass in your hand it shattered on the ground. You let out a scream seeing the tablecloth. Conjuring tears and shaking, but careful not to step on the glass shards.
The party stopped, even the stupid piano trinkle music, to look at you.
You put a hand over your mouth and burst into tears. With the anger, the sadness, and the grief you had inside, it wasn’t hard.
“Why…what is the matter?” one woman in a dark dress asked.
“It’s Loki…like Loki’s-green like his-his-” you muttered out.
You then turned to the first man in that little group of men next to the table. Before Will could interfere, you flung yourself  at the surgeon. Wrapped your arms around him in a shaking embrace. You recalled his name- what was it again? Oh, yes!
“Lucas! Oh, Lucas! Help me! The trickster god!” you cried.
You held him tight and sobbed into the white shirt of his suit.
“What, uh, is the matter, Miss?” he asked, unsure of what on earth was going on.
“It’s green! The very green like his bed was! The trickster god is going to get me! He’s going to force me to bed him again! Oh, Lucas- please! Protect me! Say you’ll protect me! Anyone, please!” you wailed.
There were a few whispers of pity from the crowd. Lucas was stiff and uncomfortable of being labeled as your protector.
“There there, Miss Y/L/N. Sure I-we will keep you, uh. safe. it’s alright, you’re safe, no need to make a fuss, shhh,” he patted awkwardly, rocking you back and forth as you clung to him.
You peeked out and saw Will look absolutely white and silently angry seeing you embracing the surgeon.
A taste of his own medicine.
You heard Loki’s voice.
‘Hal’s dying of laughter right now over this. Jonathan is cracking a smile despite himself. Stella is telling them all it is not funny and excusing herself to go to a corner and giggle.’ he said.
Lucas took note of Will and you heard a little panic in the surgeon’s voice.
“I, uh, think you should- should get home and- er, drink some tea and get some rest,” Lucas advised, desperately peeling you off of him before you went to Will. Pure terror on the surgeon's round face noticing the awkward situation he was in.
“I will escort my fiancee back home,” he said coldly, glaring at Lucas.
You were escorted sternly by Will, you pretended not to notice the jealous little huff in his voice when he said goodnight at your door.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The second Sunday was the right Sunday to do the next part of your plan- for it was bright and sunny.
You were already early there to help teach Sunday School as promised. You made sure to talk in a sweet voice as you handed out the little snacks for the children forced into stiff, fancy clothes. The older teacher fussed at them to remain still. You practiced looking at a window when they turned to her. The children sat bored and sleepy hearing about Jonah.
You saw one little light reflection out of the window flicker on the floor. Then it settled to normal before any young eyes could see.
For the longest time, you wondered why you had these gifts of moving light around- the flash from the sun, from windows, and its reflections. It wasn’t helpful against Grendel…but it would be helpful for revenge.
Service began, and people filed over the floors, made of clear tiles of white and black, almost like a chessboard. And what a move you had in store if it was successful.
You looked up at the light shining through that brown church so it no longer looked dreary.
The service began as normal. Blessed be God’s people now and forever amen and all that. A few hymns. Scripture readings. Will gave a sermon about King Saul and David. The men who were a part of Grendel’s army sitting in the congregation smiling. More intrigued to hear about swords and violence than patience and gentleness.
A prayer would be the right time. Everyone ducked their heads down to repeat what was in the Book of Common Prayer.
“Lord in your mercy,” began Will.
“Hear our prayer” the congregation intoned, as did you.
You stared at the sunlight streaming down all of the windows.
“Lord, hear us,” began Will.
“Lord, graciously hear us,” replied the congregation.
Taking in a deep breath, you silently urged the sunlight to move.
“God of love,” began Will.
“Hear our prayer,” responded the congregation.
The lights moved from the windows over the heads of all. First one stream of light, then another, and another. Everyone’s heads were down to pray, they didn’t notice.
The lights glowing on all the windows were directed at you like stage lights. You felt warm beneath it. You squinted beneath it, smiling, your magic keeping it at you. But kept repeating the prayer responses from the service.
“Lord, meet us in the silence,” began Will.
“And hear our prayer,” replied the congregation.
When their heads turned, they saw the sunlight was all pointing in your direction and beaming right at you.
There were gasps. You heard a few books of Common Prayer taking a tumble to the floor from people dropping them in shock. They gaped at you- the frightened and superstitious town. For many things happened that scared them…this was harmless.
The service went to a halt as they all looked at you.
“It’s a sign! From God!” one murmured.
“He blessed her!” whispered another.
“A blessed lady!” another agreed.
They lost interest in Will, whose mouth dropped wide, then broke into a smile. He saw a miracle before him.
The congregation turned to you. One woman went up to you and you offered your hand, she kissed it.
“God has blessed you, my dear- it’s a sign from him!” she gasped.
“He has redeemed her…redeemed her from the Trickster God!” agreed another.
They all loved and looked at you favorably, their eyes soft and their faces turning to smiles. You released the magic and suddenly Will had to re-direct everyone’s focus back to him and the service.
But they went up to you, smiling and in awe and admiration and coming in droves to smile in awe of you once it was over.
Now you had to keep it up for a good reputation in this town was as good as an alibi.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The next day, you received something in the mail- something completely shocking you almost dropped it, but it was shaking in your hand.
“I do cordially invite you to a celebration of my birthday- held on the date below. Please write back if you will be there. We plan for only a few gifts here and there, some nice beef, and plenty of cake and ice cream. We shall prepare enough seats for the dinner.
Mrs. Seaborne.”
She invited you! She invited you! To her birthday celebration! What was she thinking?! Why? Did she want the new miracle woman in her circle? Was she trying to perhaps re-acquaint herself with you after sticking Will’s penis up her-
You caught yourself, catching your breath. When your parents arrived, they hurried and saw the paper. Their eyes went to you.
“I am only…only…”
Calming down your racing heart, an idea hit you. If you were at her house, you would figure out which departments of science she was contacting. You would know who to send the blackmail to.
You brought up a smile.
“I am only Thrilled! I shall write to her at once and accept! How fun!” you replied.
You would figure out where to send the second letter to ruin Cora there.
“Wonderful! Good to know your silly jealousy of her is done,” agreed your father.
“But there will be gifts- you must go and find something for her,” your mother reminded you.
…and a new idea came upon you.  Another act of revenge on her, even worse than sending a few letters. One where none would ever suspect it to be you.
“I shall, mama.”
You knew what you had to do now, you just had to steel yourself and do it.

The Princess and the Lawyer - Part 12
“Careful!”
Lloyd caught your elbow and steadied you. After traveling for twenty hours straight, waves of exhaustion were crashing down. First, the weariness had made your head swim. Now it was disturbing your usually good sense of balance.
“Mmmmhhh.”
“You’re asleep on your feet,” Lloyd said.
You leaned into him and blinked, trying to focus.
“Uh-huh…”
You felt drunk. Even navigating the familiar layout of Lloyd’s front hall was a challenge. He guided you around the corner, to the stairs leading to his bedroom.
As you climbed them, his hand never left your waist. When the bed came into view, the sight of it turned your knees weak. Excitement and relief propelled you the last few feet before you dropped face first onto the mattress. Lloyd chuckled as you buried yourself in the green jacquard duvet, savoring the feeling of the cool fabric. With effort, you dragged yourself up the bed and then sorted through pillows until you’d found the right combination.
The moment your eyes shut, you were asleep.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Lloyd smiled at the sound of the deep, rhythmic breathing that signaled your unconscious. He slipped off your shoes and socks, and when that didn’t rouse you, he unbuttoned your pants and tugged them down. Trusting the effects of jet lag, he removed your shirt and bra, then dressed you in one of his button-ups. You didn’t stir during the entire process.
He tucked the sheet under your chin and watched the gentle rise and fall of your breath. Seeing you look so serene in his bed gave him a curious sort of satisfaction. The feeling turned his heart warm and soft, as if a ray of sunshine had shone directly into his chest, and melted it.
You were stressed out about something.
He’d felt you tossing and turning all night yesterday, and knew your sudden collapse wasn’t strictly due to jet lag. The emotion had become visible in the same moment you’d learned the bad weather had cleared. He watched it build and was mildly put off that you hadn’t shared the cause of your feelings with him. Not yet, at least.
Comforting you was impossible when he didn’t understand the problem. He’d held you last night, but it hadn’t settled your racing pulse. Your heart had pumped so hard and fast, he could feel the beat of it vibrate through you and invade his own body. All night he’d felt it thundering, like drums shaking the walls of a concert venue. This morning at the airport he’d asked if you were feeling okay. Your denial was unconvincing, but he’d marked it down to the public setting. He knew something had gotten your tail in a twist. It was only a matter of time before he found out what it was.
Since this was hardly an appropriate time for that conversation, Lloyd headed downstairs. He reset the alarm system and collected the luggage. Unless he threw in a load of laundry tonight, you’d have to go home and change in the morning.
He unpacked and sorted your laundry with his, making sure to inspect the tags for special instructions. Then he put a load on quick cycle and went to check the mail. He was standing in the kitchen sorting it when his phone buzzed.
The screen showed a 208 area code. He didn’t recognize the rest of the number, but picked up the call anyway.
“Hello?”
“Hello. I’d like to speak with Lloyd Hansen, if he’s available?”
“Speaking.”
“My name is Abigail Essex. I’m calling from St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ketchum. Before we continue, can you please confirm the nature of your relationship to Joe Hansen?”
Ice formed in his chest and slid down to settle in the pit of his stomach.
“Joe Hansen is my father.”
“Thank you. I’m a nurse in the medical ICU. Your father was admitted a few days ago for generalized weakness and nausea. His condition took a turn for the worse today.”
She paused. Lloyd stared at the glossy white wall. The message was straightforward, but his typically agile brain struggled to comprehend it.
“I’m sorry to be blunt, Mr. Hansen, but your father’s condition is quite serious. He’s suffering from viral influenza which is complicated by his existing liver failure. From the medical records, it looks like his general physician diagnosed him six years ago. The illness was already so advanced that his treatment options were limited.”
Limited treatment options. That meant terminal, didn’t it?
Abigail cleared her throat. “Mr. Hansen? Lloyd?”
“I’m here. How long?”
“Hours, maybe days. His condition is deteriorating. There’s a note in his file that Joe is estranged from his children. However, during end-of-life care we always try to reach out to the family. Social work searched for next of kin, but only found your records. If you’d like, I can contact your siblings and-”
He cut her off. “That won’t be necessary.”
“Okay. We have his POLST on file, so there’s no need for you to make decisions.”
“POLST?”
“I’m sorry. A POLST is short for physician’s orders of life-sustaining treatment. It’s a form filed with the state to express final wishes. Joe already documented his refusal of invasive life support, which is what our next steps would be. You don’t need to decide. Like I said, it’s standard practice to contact family members when we initiate palliative care, in case they’d like to pay their final respects. This call is strictly a notification.”
His lip curled, and rage tightened his belly. Final respects.
“As far as I’m concerned, you can unplug him.”
Shocked silence filled the line.
Lloyd’s eyes turned to the mirror in the dining room. He had his father’s bone structure and his thick, dark hair. They stood at exactly the same height and shared a powerful, athletic build. Most days he hated their resemblance, but he was eternally grateful for the last two traits. After puberty his body easily developed and retained muscle, giving him a priceless advantage on the football field. He’d turned it into a ticket to the Ivy Leagues, then to freedom.
There were other differences between them, but only on a superficial level. Where Joe Hansen’s eyes were jet black, Lloyd’s were cobalt blue. Joe’s skin was a medium olive that browned quickly in the sun. His own skin repelled sunlight and what little melanin he could develop in the summer vanished before Labor Day. The contrast in coloring was the starkest difference between him and his old man. Except for that, they were almost clones.
The fair skin and blue eyes were gifts from his mother. Those recessive Norwegian genes that caused the divergence seemed most readily passed from mother to son. Without them, he’d begin each morning staring at the face of a monster as he shaved. Thank God for small favors.
“Is there anything further?” Lloyd asked.
“Would you like to be notified when he passes?”
“Call if you want, I don’t care. He’s been dead to me for years.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The alarm went off at 4:30 a.m.
Lloyd hit snooze with enough force to send the clock skittering across the nightstand. You curled into your pillow and groaned. He stretched and climbed out the bed to open the curtains.
On Mondays, he usually jogged the five-mile loop from Old Town to Belle Haven. He shoved back the drapes and saw the sky was ink black and the sky was spitting rain. The humidity would be a bitch and even the light rain would soak him to the bone in minutes. Blankets rustled faintly behind him as you rolled over. He glanced back and smiled. There were other forms of cardio, which were just as effective, and he’d stay warm and dry doing them.
Lloyd sat down by the cocoon of blankets you’d coiled into during the night. He ran his hand over your back and lightly scratched between your shoulders. You made a noise, something halfway between a hiss and a moan, like a cranky kitten.
“It’s Monday morning, Princess. Time to rise and shine.”
“No…”
“C’mere,” Lloyd purred.
You whined as he dragged you into his arms, trying to grab for the pillow. Because you hadn’t opened your eyes, you missed it by a mile and flailed in protest as he hauled you into his lap. He kissed your cheek and rubbed the bridge of his nose against your jaw. Instantly, you softened. He took advantage and kissed the corner of your mouth.
“Lloyd. I’m tired.”
“You’ve slept ten hours, you need to stretch your muscles.”
“Go away! I’m not going jogging! Self-respecting humans don’t run at this hour of morning.”
He pretended to be hurt. “You don’t want to come keep me safe? What if I get mugged?”
“Muggers don’t get up at this hour.”
Lloyd chuckled. “Because they’re such nice, polite, self-respecting humans?”
“Yes. You have a screw loose, Hansen.”
“Several,” he agreed. “What if I did my cardio here? Would that repair your impression of my respectability?”
“Mmmmhhh. Okay.”
You were falling asleep again. He could hear it in your voice and feel you relaxing in his arms. Lloyd pushed off the remaining blankets and undid the dress shirt’s buttons. You stirred as he drew apart the sides of the garment to expose your chest. Kissing a feather-light pathway from your ear, down your neck, to the swell of your breast, he took his time.
You arched and lifted your arms over your head, an offer he couldn’t refuse. The rise and fall of your chest quickened as he explored the sides of each breast and nibbled on the delicate swells of their undersides. He kissed your sternum, making sure his mustache tickled your skin.
You squirmed and giggled.
The sound made him smile, even as heat throbbed in his groin. He returned to your lips for another taste. You kissed him with feverish demand, your fingers delving into his hair as you tilted your head back. The innate submission of the movement cracked his control. He growled and his tongue flicked into your mouth as he teased your nipples with his fingertips. You moaned when he cupped the soft flesh and stroked the tender buds. They were rock hard, biting into his hand like pebbles. Every little whimper you made inflamed his desire.
Your nails raked the back of his neck, sending a bolt of lightning straight to his cock. When your hands moved from his shoulders, down to stroke his chest, he inhaled sharply. The caressing exploration made him groan. Your touch felt almost innocent, as if you were still fascinated by his body, despite your increased experience. You traced the swirl of a cowlick in his chest hair. Then your nails scraped, and he hissed at the flash of pleasure.
He lunged, attacking your neck with his lips and teeth, eager to retake the upper hand. Lloyd pinned you to the bed, easily countering your half-hearted attempts to squirm away. Then he bit your neck, and the startled cry it elicited from you went straight to his groin. He licked the mark he’d left and savored the taste of your sweat. When he took a deep breath, and scented the tang of your arousal, hanging thick in the air, it shattered the last of his control.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
All the pleasure you’d experienced at Lloyd’s hands paled compared to this. It was like he was everywhere at once. Your lips, neck, and cheeks buzzed with heat. A bead of sweat rolled between your breasts - Lloyd licked it up. His eyes flashed to yours and he purred, the sound dripping with satisfaction.
During the week in Qatar, you’d done nothing more than cuddle. His experiences there haunted him and you understood the lack of desire was nothing personal. It seemed this morning he’d shaken off the ghosts and was making up for lost time.
His kisses were dominating, and his touch was tinged with a new sense of property. He was focused on your physical reactions and the caution he’d shown with you in the past was nowhere to be found. His tongue drove into your mouth and your teeth clashed against his. He restrained your wrists above your head without a second of hesitation. Excitement bubbled up at the realization that the flash of dominance he’d shown in Qatar had come out to play again. Your fingers tangled in his hair as you threw yourself into the kiss, matching his feverish assault with equal heat.
He broke the kiss to return his attention to your breasts, and you whined at the loss. Lloyd chuckled, low and warm. His teeth scraped over the pounding pulse in your throat. He nipped at your collarbone and across the mound of your breast. The brush of his mustache as he nuzzled the side, a spot you’d never known could be so sensitive, made you shiver. When his lips finally closed around an aching nipple, the sensation made your back bow.
Fire licked over your skin and raced to your core. The sensitive walls of your sex convulsed, frustrated by unmet need. You felt the wetness soaking your panties as desire built and your body prepared to be filled. Lloyd took his time, lavishing attention on your breasts. He seemed to take pleasure in foiling your attempts to gain control and drew out the foreplay as long as possible. When he finally eased back, you were sobbing and quivering at each brush of his lips against your hyper-sensitive nipples.
Tears glazed your eyes. The pulsating heat in your core was nearly painful. The intense desire rippling through your muscles had turned them weak. Hunger throbbed in your blood and sweat soaked your skin. It was unclear what portion of it was yours and what amount Lloyd had contributed. His body was feverishly hot against yours and his eyes burned with the same hunger that had you writhing helplessly against him.
Finally, he settled over you, peeling off the damp lace covering your sex and shoving it down your legs. He lifted the panties to his face and breathed in the scent. His eyes flashed to yours and their cobalt depths radiated victorious heat.
He growled. The authenticity of the sound stole your breath. It rumbled from his chest, raising the hair on the back of your neck at the barely restrained violence it contained. His fingers delved into your pussy and he groaned, flexing his digits and stretching your inner walls. The searing heat building in your channel turned molten as his fingers expertly stroked and teased. You cried out, sensation rippling from your womb, down your thighs, up your spine, until it crested and you bucked against his hand.
“Lloyd!”
He grunted, then his thumb swiped over your clit, eliciting a scream. The ecstasy made your whole body shudder.
“That’s it, sweetheart. Let go.”
His fingers kept moving, plunging in and out, teasing your sweet spot, and caressing your pulsing clit. You trembled on the cusp of orgasm, wanting the release, but not quite able to reach it. Lloyd captured the peak of your breast between his lips. You screamed and shattered. Your body surged, hips canting off the bed as you convulsed. Lloyd continued to draw the pleasure out of you, moving steadily even as your powerful inner muscles seized on wave after wave of climax. His thumb teased your clit, even when you tried to jerk away and twisted, trying to dislodge the tormenting stimulation.
“No, no, keep going. Come on, Princess. Give me one more.”
Your shoulder blades pulled together, clenching, as his coaxing words triggered fresh spasms of climax. Right on the heels of the first orgasm, a second wave dragged you into mindless rapture and knocked everything out of your head. Lloyd sucked your nipples, using the strength of his arm to increase the roughness of his ministrations. The change pushed your orgasm to new heights. You keened, thrashing, clutching the sheets for purchase, and wailing as the pleasure refused to let up.
Several minutes later he eased his drenched fingers from your channel. You could only hear the blood pounding in your head and the ragged sound of your breath. Every muscle was shaking. There was no way to count how many orgasms he’d taken from you, or if they’d been separate, because after the second, they’d all blended together. The final tremors of climax lingered in the shaking muscles of your thighs and clenching sex. It felt endless and overwhelming. Despite that, a deep ache inside of you demanded something more. It needed a more complete pleasure to be slaked than his hands alone could give.
He settled between your legs, stretching over you. Lloyd tilted your face up and when your lips met, his kiss was surprisingly gentle. He gently teased your swollen lips before his tongue darted into your mouth. You wrapped your arms around his waist and kissed him with fervor.
“Good girl,” Lloyd praised. “Slide down for me.”
He guided you lower, tugging your hips, pulling you away from the headboard. His hands went under your legs and he pushed your knees up, then widened your thighs as far as possible. A tremor ran through you as he dipped his fingers into your sticky folds. He explored around your clit without touching it directly. Just that was enough to make you shake. Lloyd groaned.
“Such a responsive little thing. You’re so fucking tight, Princess.”
The head of his cock rubbed your slit, teasing you with the promise of relief. You whimpered at the slow, cautious breach of his cock sliding into your sex. Lloyd’s eyes fastened on your face. His girth burned, but the discomfort only made your sex flutter harder. The delicate channel beat with a welcome pulse as it struggled to draw him deeper. You groaned at the delightful stretch as he worked himself into you inch by inch. When he was halfway there, he drew back, and with a powerful thrust, drove home. You shrieked when the throbbing spot, deep in your body, that inferno that had demanded relief, was struck hard by the crown of his cock. A blinding surge of pleasure made you thrash, toss your head and claw at his back.
Lloyd snarled. His hips pistoned forward, triggering another blinding surge of pleasure. He rocked again, then set a brutal pace that electrified your spine, making your pliant muscles undulate with a new intensity. Your hands were weak as they grasped his biceps, clinging to him for security.
“Look at me.”
His rough command made your eyes open.
“Say it…”
Your hormone addled brain stuttered, unable to process the demand. He pounded into you harder at your speechlessness, eyes flashing.
“Princess, I wanna hear you.”
He jerked his hips, impaling you deeper than you’d ever felt him. The devastating flood of pleasure made your toes curl, eliciting a scream as tremors became convulsions and you unraveled.
“Say it!”
“Lloyd! Aaaahhh…”
His fingers found your clit and rubbed, quick and hard. You jackknifed at the unexpected pleasure.
“Oh, fuck, Lloyd!”
“Yeah, that’s it. Say my name!”
The pace of the thrusts increased as his control slipped. You recognized the signs of his orgasm and whined in anticipation. His hands tightened on your hips and he lifted you slightly to pound into you at a deeper angle. It brought on another orgasm. This one was fast, sharper than the first. He put his weight behind the thrusts, driving impossibly deep. You screamed.
“Lloyd! Uuhhh…”
The climax felt unending. A groan rose in your throat, low and reverberating, as an entirely different kind of pleasure sent you reeling. The depth of his penetration caused the waves of climax to spread, up into the muscles of your belly, and down your quivering thighs. He teased your clit mercilessly, even as you sobbed. Ripples of pleasure caused your legs to jerk, seizing around Lloyd’s hips as they stripped you of your senses. You shuddered helplessly, crying, whimpering, consumed by a delirium of passion.
His thrusts grew quicker, turning harder and shorter, before his seed flooded you. Lloyd gasped, moaned and then collapsed. In your post-orgasm stupor, all you could manage was to curl one arm around his back. The other was limp, along with the rest of your body. You felt disconnected, so much so that even the pressure of Lloyd’s crushing weight was a distant echo.
This couldn’t be normal. How could so much emotion pour out during something so profoundly physical? You weren’t built to handle this kind of intensity. It had been like the first time, when the sheer excitement of being with him had short-circuited your brain. Except today there had been more. More power. More raw, unbridled passion.
Was it because of the foreplay? Or the brief period of abstinence last week in Qatar? Or was it just the especially potent chemistry between you and Lloyd?
He moved first, rising to his elbows. His eyes were glassy and the emotions in them mirrored exactly what you felt. Recognizing it calmed your racing thoughts. You brushed back his hair and kissed him. His arms flexed around your waist and you felt another pulse of release splash against your womb. Then you realized your bodies were still joined, and you were sticky with more than just sweat.
“I need a shower. We both do, actually.”
He grunted. “Can you move?”
“Probably not. I feel boneless.”
“Yeah. Me too.”

Lloyd’s eyes skimmed your figure appreciatively as you walked ahead of him, entering the lobby of Bishop & Howard.
“No ogling before 10:30, Counselor.”
“If you don’t want to be ogled, don’t wear skirts that make your legs look so tasty.”
“When did I say that I didn’t want to be ogled? I only said it had to be after 10:30.”
“10:30 p.m. came and went nine hours ago.”
“I hate lawyers.”
He followed you to the elevator car and leaned against the wall, his eyes still tracing your curves.
“You look good enough to eat.”
“And you look like a troll that woke up on the wrong side of the bridge. Are you jet lagged?”
“Maybe. I couldn’t sleep last night.”
The car arrived with a chime and you stepped in. Lloyd tapped the button for the fifth floor.
“All that cardio this morning probably didn’t help. Why don’t you take a catnap on your sofa? I can cover for you.”
“No. I need to see Bishop.”
Your humor faded. “You’re going to tell him?”
“There’s no point in waiting.”
“Alright. Just make sure he’s caffeinated.”
Lloyd snorted. “I do have some sense of self-preservation.”
The elevator doors opened to the unexpected sight of Bishop, waiting for you. He had a take-away carrier of coffees balanced in his left hand.
He quirked an eyebrow. “Don’t worry, you’re safe. I already had two cups.”
You assembled in Lloyd’s office, and everyone fell into the same places you’d taken on the day the case was introduced. Bishop settled into one of the armchairs while you and Lloyd shared the couch.
“How was Singapore?”
“The interrogation went smoothly. Nguyen wasn’t forthright, but he wasn’t as hostile as he could’ve been,” Lloyd said.
Bishop considered. “Age could do that, but so could twenty years of living with a guilty conscience.”
“I wouldn’t say the good doctor has an overdeveloped conscience,” Lloyd said.
“I’d concur. Did you learn anything new?”
Lloyd leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. He laced his fingers together loosely and met Bishop’s gaze.
“I don’t think he did it.”
“That’s ridiculous. I know my prosecution didn’t have the strongest evidence, but I stand by that verdict.”
“There are significant inconsistencies in the case.”
“Nguyen’s history, and his obvious motive, were evidence enough.”
“He had a motive for Julia’s murder. But there’s no solid connection between him and the missing women. In the best cases all there was is circumstantial evidence and in the worst cases, it’s pure conjecture.”
Bishop waved his hand as if wiping away the claim.
“He had opportunities and he’s the only person directly connected to all the victims. When his girlfriend turned up dead, we knew. But the real nail in his coffin is that when he was prosecuted, the disappearances stopped.”
“Roth sent us the files on the other suspects. I’d hardly call those ‘investigations’ thorough,” Lloyd said.
“When your list of suspects is the whole town, it’s hard to be thorough,” Bishop fired back.
“Fine. But this is an instance where the simplest explanation was molded to fit the public’s theory and calm the community.”
“Don’t chase zebras, Lloyd. You spoke with the man, you’re an astute judge of character. It takes all of five minutes to know what he is.”
“Emotionally unstable. Intelligent. Manipulative enough to identify emotions but cold enough not to feel them. His sense of empathy is strictly cognitive - he can understand why people have emotions, but I suspect he doesn’t feel much more than pleasure, excitement, anger, frustration, and disgust. He’s pretty high up on the spectrum of psychopaths. But he’s not excited by violence.”
“How could you tell?”
“His reactions. He feels, or at least pretends to feel, a sense of shame for how he treated Julia. The investigation scares him. But what really made him react was hearing about the second body. He knows more than he’s saying. It’s probably why he didn’t fight the charges harder. He knew he was safer in prison.”
“Who’s your suspect?” Bishop asked.
Lloyd snorted. “Everyone in town, unfortunately.”
“The media has dragged this story through the mud, and back again, several times. They’d whipped the locals into a lather long before Dr. Nguyen’s name entered the investigation, and they’re fixing to do it again.”
“I expect it will be a challenge, but that’s why you brought me in. Roth provided the original case files. The kindest way I can phrase my opinion is to say that their investigation never really got both oars in the water.”
Bishop’s hand covered the joint of the ankle that rested on his left knee. He tilted his head back in what most people would have taken for arrogance, but knowing him, you pegged it as discomfort.
“The state police took one look at Julia’s case and immediately decided it fit the pattern of the disappearances. Nguyen wasn’t just a convenient suspect, he was their only suspect. Extrapolating from a solitary murder, one that occurred within the setting of a domestic violence situation, to a broader accusation doesn’t track.”
“What tracks is that after he went to prison, the disappearances stopped.”
“Nguyen is an emotionally unstable, deeply insecure, coward of a man with an unquenchable need for control. Beating on his woman gave it to him. Why seek other outlets for his anger, when he had a perfectly good punching bag waiting at home?”
“I’m not a psychiatrist. Why he committed his crimes isn’t my concern. My concern was that women stopped disappearing in Harmony once they locked him up.”
“Why were Julia’s remains so easily found? If Nguyen had the means to dispose of numerous other victims before her without leaving a trace, why wasn’t he as careful getting rid of his own girlfriend?” Lloyd asked.
“Dumb luck. Son of Sam was caught because of a parking ticket. Israel Keyes used a credit card from one of his victims. Anyone can get sloppy - even serial killers. When they do, it’s a lucky day for the justice system.”
“Murdering your girlfriend is one type of crazy. Serial killing is another. It’s no stretch to imagine Nguyen in the first category, but the second? He doesn’t have the patience, the emotional control, or the guts.”
“He had connections with all the missing women,” Bishop said.
“Shocking, isn’t it? Given that Harmony’s such a bustling metropolis, and considering Nguyen was a local doctor who treated hundreds of patients a year. Most of those so-called ‘connections’ were pretty thin.”
“Well, along with being connected to all the victims, he lied to investigators and showed guilty knowledge about the circumstances of Julia’s death. He also had a documented history of violence against women and no alibi.”
“He showed guilty knowledge of Julia’s death. That’s one point we can wholeheartedly agree on. The problem is that they distorted his domestic violence into a generalized violence towards women. When the two separate concepts are blended into one, it’s easy to jump to conclusions.”
“I’m not seeing the distinction,” Bishop said.
“Nguyen had a personal attachment to Julia, and he was violent toward her. However, I suspect anyone who got too close with him would be at risk. Dominating someone else, taking away their control, that’s how he relieves anxiety. It’s a feedback loop, one that only works when there’s an emotional bond between him and the victim.”
“That’s interesting. But the fact stands: locking Nguyen away precipitated the end of the abductions in Harmony. Twenty years have gone by without another case.”
“Coincidence.”
Bishop bristled at Lloyd’s dismissive tone. “No more victims equals no more offender.”
“That’s a non sequitur. No more kidnappings equals no more kidnappings; drawing any other conclusion is bending the facts to fit a theory.”
“I disagree, but common sense isn’t a flower that grows in everyone’s garden.”
Lloyd snickered. Just like that, the thick layer of tension hanging over the room evaporated.
“You asked my opinion, and went to a lot of trouble arranging the interview, because you knew I wouldn’t be anything less than candid.”
“You’re a blunt instrument, Hansen,” Bishop sighed.
“Always have been, always will be.”
“I considered sending Zach to interview Nguyen. The trouble is, my objectivity in this case took a hike long ago and whoever went to Singapore…”
He trailed off, cheeks flushing with embarrassed color.
“Whoever went to Singapore had to come back and pull the thorn out of the lion’s paw,” Lloyd said, filling in the rest of the thought.
“I needed an unfiltered perspective on Nguyen from someone I trusted. You’re the only person I respect who’d be irreverent enough to speak your mind, regardless of it pissing me off.”
“Irreverence is a speciality of mine.”
Bishop laughed, then sighed. “It’s difficult to re-investigate a cold case under the best circumstances. When the media learns there are new victims, and where they were found, they’ll descend like a plague of locusts.”
“No doubt,” Lloyd agreed.
“When I met with Roth, he mentioned reporters had already come sniffing around. Nguyen probably contacted them himself.”
“I can handle the media,” Lloyd said.
“Uh-huh.” Bishop glanced at you.
“I’ll keep him away from reporters,” you promised.
“Just try your best. Even reformed, he’s damn near ungovernable.”
“They ask me stupid questions, I’ll give them stupid answers,” Lloyd said.
“No, you won’t. If they call, you forward it to me. If you’re approached in person, the only acceptable answer- even to stupid questions - is ‘no comment.’ Under no circumstances will you say anything else.”
“She loves to cramp my style,” Lloyd said to Bishop.
“I know… my peace of mind often relies on it.”
A tap sounded on the door frame, and three sets of eyes swung to the noise.
“Visitors for you, Mr. Hansen.”
The receptionist stepped aside, revealing a uniformed police officer. Beside him was a man you’d have guessed was his partner, if he’d worn the same navy blue. Instead of a uniform the second guest was dressed in slacks and a blazer. The jacket was the most hideous shade of burnt orange you’d ever seen. It should be a crime to dye perfectly good fabric such an ugly color.
“I’m here to see Mr. Hansen,” the officer said.
“That would be me.”
“May we come in?”
Bishop moved to the couch, directing the newcomers to the matching armchairs on the far side of the conversation area. You slid to the middle seat and let him take the end.
There was a grimness in the officer’s features that suggested this wasn’t a casual visit, or a pleasant one. Bishop frowned, apparently picking up the same vibe. Lloyd, on the other hand, seemed unperturbed by the apprehension the guests carried into the room.
“What can I do for you?” he asked.
“I’m Officer Audley, of the D.C. Metro Police. This,” he gestured to the man in the hideous jacket, “is Morgan Lopez, our community coordinator.”
Audley paused and scanned Lloyd’s face.
“I have some bad news, Mr. Hansen. Your father was admitted to the hospital in Ketchum, Idaho last week. He had chronic liver disease, which was complicated by a bout of influenza. I’m sorry to tell you he died earlier this morning.”
The statement hung in the air, wiping everything away with its finality. Lloyd’s father was dead. Your heart twisted unpleasantly. Your father was your rock, the steadiest, most reliable man you knew. In Lloyd’s position, you’d be devastated.
“Alright. Thanks for stopping by.”
Officer Audley blinked, and Mr. Lopez’s eyebrows lifted. Even knowing Lloyd like you did, his reaction was unsettling. He noted their response and gave a tight smile.
“Look, there isn’t much to say. My father and I haven’t spoken in almost 25 years.”
Audley’s expression shifted, recovering its professional mask. “I understand. The Blaine County Sheriff asked us to pass on some information.”
He waited for Lloyd to nod, then flipped open a small notebook.
“According to the sheriff, your father had downsized his cattle ranching operation but the… uh…” Audley squinted to read his writing. “Brand inspector?”
“That’s right. I take it there are cattle to be dealt with?”
“367 of them according to the Brand Inspector’s records. They’ve contacted the feed store and some local cowboys will take care of things for a couple days.”
Audley’s tone was tinged with disbelief as if he found discussing the day-to-day operations of a cattle ranch utterly bizarre.
“Was anyone available?” Lloyd asked.
“Just for the next two days. Sheriff Holbrook said he’d put out some feelers to see if anyone was available for temporary hire, but all the cowboys are employed, or busy rodeoing.”
“I’ll make some calls,” Lloyd said. He looked at Bishop.
“Go. Take care of your family matters.”
“The case-”
“Zach will take the lead and Princess can keep you in the loop. If you’d like to be in the loop, that is.”
“I do. I want regular updates.”
“Then it’s settled. Don’t spare a thought for the investigation, just take care of what you need to. Your team can handle things.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You closed the door behind Officer Audley with a quiet sigh of relief.
Lloyd’s complete lack of reaction made enduring the rest of their visit hard. It was difficult not to comfort him. It was even harder to sit there quietly, aware of his pain bubbling up, as the shock wore off. Bishop had charmed the visitors and skillfully ended the visit by escorting them to the elevators. You felt like an eon had passed before he’d led them away.
Lloyd stood by the desk, his hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on the items lining the edge. You stood with your back to the door and braced for the crash of him shoving everything off the desk. Even with therapy his strongest displays of emotion leaned toward volcanic.
A minute passed and the crash didn’t come.
“Lloyd?”
You stepped closer and when he didn’t react, approached him. Making sure he saw it coming, you touched his shoulder.
“What are you thinking?”
“It’s easier for a father to have children than for children to have a father.”
You stroked his arm, observing the quick rise and fall of his chest. The increase in respirations was the only visible sign of distress.
“I didn’t come up with that,” Lloyd said.
His tone was remote, as he stared sightlessly at his desk. The vacant expression called to mind the pictures of shell-shocked soldiers from the First World War. After seeing them in your third-grade history textbook, those photos had given you nightmares for months.
“Some dead Pope came up with that saying. My father, he grew up Catholic… he repeated that phrase. Repeated it a lot. When I was a kid I thought it was nonsensical. Then one day the meaning of it hit me, and I realized he knew exactly what a shitty excuse of a father he was.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
His voice prickled with defensiveness, the kind that always reared up after he revealed something painful about his past. You usually eased away when he signaled discomfort, because comfort was something he despised, especially when he was the one who needed it. Today you couldn’t offer him that space. Your arms went around him and you slid between his body and the desk, cuddling into his broad chest.
Lloyd’s arms banded around your waist, loosely at first. Then they tightened into a fierce hug.
“I got a call last night. His nurse asked about end-of-life care and I told her it was fine by me if they unplugged him. But he’d already put his last wishes on file. No life saving measures. He stole the only chance I could’ve had to legally kill him. That pisses me off.”
His voice was gravelly with a hurt that ran deeper than anger ever could. You could feel the sorrow welling up in him. After a minute he lifted you to sit on the desk and buried his face in your neck. You spread your legs as far as your tight skirt allowed, drawing him close.
“I thought I’d feel relieved.”
You combed your fingers through his hair, listening to his ragged breathing. After a while, you felt dampness on your shoulder. It didn’t surprise you that his tears came, or that they fell silently.
“How do you feel?”
“Angry. Cheated. Full of regret. Confused. Which is stupid. There’s nothing to be confused about. The bastard finally drank himself to death, and the world is a better place.”
But he was still your father.
You didn’t say it, because it wouldn’t do any good. It wouldn’t comfort him or lighten the weight of his grief. The fact was, nothing could break that primal tie between a child and a parent. That was the cruel nature of heritage - it endured, no matter how hard a person tried to break away.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Trying to be subtle, you glanced up and down the hall. When you were sure you were alone, you ducked into the stairwell for a secret meeting on the fifth floor landing.
Jake was already there, with Landon McAnanny.
“Have you talked to Lloyd?” Jake asked.
“I couldn’t, something came up.”
“What the hell came up?!”
“His father died!”
Jake’s eyes widened. “Lloyd’s father is alive?”
“He was until this morning.”
“Uh… he’s never mentioned his father before.”
“He’s going to Idaho to settle his affairs.”
“He’s leaving today?” Landon asked.
“Yeah.”
“That’s not good.”
You cringed at the concern in his eyes. Seeing his reaction fanned the anxiety you’d been fighting back for days.
“I’ll tell him as soon as he gets back.”
Landon eased a half step closer. “Look, reaching out to Aiden’s father was a good start, but he can’t control his son for long. The anger is escalating and there’s a subtext of entitlement in the latest messages. It stinks of trouble.”
Jake nodded emphatically as Landon continued.
“You’ve already documented everything. It’s more than enough to file a complaint.”
You were shaking your head before Landon finished.
“They can’t do anything. Aiden’s texts are anonymous and he’s been careful not to be spotted.”
Landon’s right eye twitched. “I know. But reporting your suspicions-”
“Will be little more than an exercise in humiliation.”
The men exchanged a sidelong glance. You sighed, knowing they probably didn’t share your distrust of the police, especially not in a matter like this.
“Look, cops are notoriously bad at handling stalkers. A lot of it comes down to the fact that anti-stalking laws have to be balanced against the bill of rights. Using other avenues to resolve this is a much better option.”
“Mr. LeDoux is a cop, and he said he would help with that,” Jake pointed out.
You sighed. Having Mr. LeDoux’s support behind your complaint would count for a lot in a town like D.C.
“With the amount of evidence you have, they’d be completely negligent to ignore you,” Landon said.
Someone coughed. You looked up and froze at the sight of Bishop on the sixth floor landing.
“I apologize for eavesdropping, but if I can interject…”
“Please do,” Jake invited.
Bishop came down the steps and joined you on the lower level.
“From what I gathered, your ex is making a problem of himself, Lloyd doesn’t know, and the situation is escalating.”
“Yeah.”
“How bad are the messages?” Bishop asked Landon.
“Bad. He’s gone from annoying and sadistic to action-oriented threats. The past three days he’s been sending pictures of her building like he’s staking it out.”
“How long has this been going on?”
“It started when I was in Singapore. I contacted his father already, and he holds the purse strings, which should help, but so far…”
Bishop nodded. “Uh-huh. Legally speaking, it would be beneficial to start a record with the police sooner, rather than later.”
“I’m coming around to that… slowly. I’m going to tell Lloyd, just not right now. I can’t add to his stress.”
“You’re working in the field with Zach this week,” Bishop said. “Stick close to him. Outside of work, you’re going to be house-sitting for Lloyd while he’s out of town, correct?”
“Yeah.”
The thought of Lloyd’s security system brightened your mood. Your top priority was not returning to your apartment for the foreseeable future. Not when Aiden might be sulking around.
“What about telling Zach?” Jake asked.
“How do you think Lloyd would feel if I told Zach before him?”
“You told me, and I told Landon. What’s the difference?”
“It’s different. Zach is his best friend.”
Bishop frowned. “Under the circumstances, I think he’d understand.”
“Can she work from our offices?” Landon asked. “The rent-a-cops down in the lobby aren’t much more than window dressing.”
“You can work from home, Zach’s offices, even the State Police building if Detective Roth allows it. Until Lloyd can be here with you, our building has too much foot traffic for safety,” Bishop said.
“Weston might not be thrilled with that.”
Bishop sighed at the mention of your supervisor. “He’s still annoying you about time cards?”
“He called me in Singapore to inform me that my card from last week is wrong.”
“You’ve never had an issue before, so I’m sure it’s nothing. Have Jen approve your card and tell Weston it’s resolved.”
“Thanks.”
Bishop opened his phone and typed out a message. Your phone chimed, and you saw he’d shared a contact card.
“That’s the information of a detective I’m acquainted with on the Robbery-Homicide squad at Metro. He’s in the second district office. Just in case you feel the need to speak with someone, keep his number handy. You’re going over to Fairfax with Zach, right?”
“Yeah, I’ll text Lloyd and stop by to pick up the keys, learn the alarm system.”
“Stick close to Zach. Between Lloyd’s security system and him, you should be okay for a few days.”
“And file a police report. Tonight,” Landon said.
You scanned the serious faces of the three men and gave in.
“Okay. I will. Tonight.”

You arrived at Lloyd’s finding his luggage packed and sitting by the front door. From the back of the house, a door slammed, and you followed the sound to the kitchen where Lloyd was re-lining the trash can.
“Hey.”
“I just finished cleaning out the fridge. You might need to pick up some groceries. There’s $300 cash in the cookie jar, dont waste your own money.”
“How are you feeling?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. It doesn’t feel real.”
“Is there anything I can do?”
“You’re already doing it.”
You hugged him and he propped his chin on top of your head as he returned the embrace.
“We hadn’t spoken in decades, so I don’t know why this feels different. But it does. I don’t know how to explain it.”
“It’s okay to be confused. And you don’t owe me any explanations,” you said, rubbing his back.
“I can’t understand how I can hate him so much and still feel grief.”
“Feelings aren’t required to make sense. They get to be complicated, and if you don’t want to unravel them right now, that’s okay. Just don’t feel like you’re alone. Whenever you need to talk, or just be with someone, I’m here.”
“I’m glad you’ll be staying here while I’m gone.”
So were you, but for entirely different reasons.
“Call me when you land, okay?”
“I will. Text me about the meeting. Even if it won’t get through until I’ve landed, I want an update.”

At the state police headquarters in Fairfax, you met Zach in the parking lot.
He peppered you with questions about Lloyd’s reaction to his father’s death. You realized he knew far more about their relationship than you did and traded bits of information for the scant details he could offer about the late Mr. Hansen.
A young female officer escorted you to a conference room, where Detective Roth was waiting. Having spoken with him on the phone, you’d formed an image of how he looked, which was completely wrong. He wasn’t in his mid-thirties with sandy brown hair as you’d expected.
Instead of hair, he had a shaved head. At first glance his eyebrows appeared blond but when the sunlight caught them, you saw he was actually a redhead. Most surprising was that he wore rimless glasses, the kind Steve Jobs was famous for, though his were more oval than round. When he stood, he towered over you. Even Zach, who wasn’t short by any means, had to look up at him.
“Good afternoon,” Roth greeted.
There was a hint of a Georgia drawl in his vowels and his eyes were arctic blue. The icy gaze carefully examined both his visitors before he invited you to sit.
He opened the meeting with the usual pleasantries and you noted his manners matched the Southern drawl. His relaxed posture didn’t hide the cunning intelligence in his pale eyes and within a minute you recognized that he was every bit as dangerous as Lloyd or Zach. Questions flowed naturally into the conversation, like slippery eels, and his nonchalant mannerisms disguised the intense scrutiny behind them. Roth took his time, thoroughly analyzing you and Zach, before he addressed the elephant in the room.
“Given Bishop’s history with this case, I’m not comfortable with his people involving themselves in my investigation.”
“We’re here to help, nothing more,” Zach said.
He’d been trying to connect with Roth, using the good old boy affability he wore like a veneer when he was trying to be personable. It wasn’t working, not even a little.
“Help,” Roth repeated.
His tone was bland, despite the twinge of annoyance you caught around his eyes. He pinned Zach with a hard look.
“You’re here to help, alright. And to keep your boss informed. He’s already been down and given me his version of the charm offensive. To be honest, Mr. Hightower, I liked his style more than yours. But I didn’t answer his questions and I’m hesitant to share anything further, knowing he’d like to influence my work.”
Zach smirked. “I don’t work for Bishop.”
“Employee or not, he pays you. That’s working for him in my book.”
You jumped in before Zach could dig a deeper hole.
“Detective, we understand your concerns. Trust won’t grow overnight, but we’re here. What can we do that would be most helpful to assist your work?”
“I have a nightmarish list of records to locate, if they even exist, and organize. That’s priority number one.”
“I had a thought about that the other day,” you said.
“Creating a database of publicly available records from that time would streamline the research process significantly. With some help from the Harmony library and the courthouse, I can get started. Once we’ve logged our own copies of everything, it will save a lot of time cross-referencing later.”
“That could be useful.”
Zach cleared his throat. "Speaking of useful, can we get access to the recent labs?”
“No. But if you file a request with the front desk, they’ll get back to you.”
“File a request? Are you kidding me?”
“Does the look on my face suggest that I’m joking?”
You had to smother your laughter. Roth’s face didn’t suggest anything. He might be the most closed-book person you’d ever met. You especially appreciated the way he pushed Zach’s buttons.
“Have you had any media attention on the case lately?” you asked.
“Fortunately, no. But my luck won’t hold for long. Any help managing that shit storm would be much appreciated.”
“I’ll leave you my card.”
“And I guess I’ll go file my request with the front desk,” Zach said.
The tiniest smile curved Roth’s thin lips. He waited until Zach began to unfurl himself from the chair, then reached for a folder.
“Here’s the DNA results.”
He turned it over, so the print side was down, and slid it across the table. Zach picked it up and held it so you could both read. Your eyes scanned the page quickly. As you took in the meaning, you bent forward to check that you’d read it correctly.
“They’re sure this is accurate?” Zach asked.
“Yeah. We were surprised, too. Not by the first result, but the third comparison they did was a heck of a plot twist.”
You studied the results. “The first test established that the woman in the recently discovered slab is the mother of the child found with her. But what about the DNA sample labeled X? Who is that from?”
“A relative. We do that a lot in cases like this, trying to identify a family tree. DNA from mother and daughter matched with a known sample in CODIS.”
“50% match with the mother and a 25% match with the daughter. You found a grandparent?” Zach asked.
“We identified a full-blooded sister of the mother,” Roth said.
“Who is sample X from?” you asked.
“Julia Xiarong.”
“Holy shit,” Zach murmured, staring at the report.
“That wasn’t the strangest part. Now, I’ve confirmed this next piece of information five different ways, trying to wrap my head around it. By all records, and from interviews with people in China who knew Julia as a child… Everyone confirms the same thing. She didn’t have a sister.”
You struggled to absorb the revelation. Roth pushed his glasses up and rubbed the bridge of his nose where they’d rested. A disbelieving smile twisted his thin mouth.
“There’s no record of Julia Xiarong ever having a sister.”

Fuel Leak Snowball...
Tumblr media
Firstly apologies for it being almost 38 months since my last post. Nothing happened with 16606 for the majority of that time, what with the pandemic, and then as lockdowns started to lift we started a building project at home, so the D went for a little holiday to a storage facility on a farm in deepest Essex. I had her back in late August 2022, got it re-taxed and MOT'd with only a few outings around the block until very recently.
Trust the D to ruin a lovely day
It was a lovely sunny Sunday on 30th September when I decided to take 16606 for a short spin following some in and out TLC. After parking up on the drive something drew me to look under the car where I found a liquid dripping from the mid section of the car.
youtube
Upon closer inspection is stank of fuel.
Side-note: Readers of this blog will know I've been on a learning journey with this car and as each issue arises I try to learn what needs to be done and then dive in, admit defeat and speak nicely to members of the DeLorean Eurotec club for assistance (who are always beyond fantastic and generous with their time), or go down the professional garage route (this is the last resort, not because I don't want to pay professional prices but because they tend to have never encountered a DeLorean, let alone a car of some 40 years old, and are actually not often able to do a "professional" job).
After taking advice from members of the DeLorean Eurotec club I tentatively started the engine and drove the D back into the garage in the knowledge that I should check the fuel pump. This filled me with dread since this was an area of the car I had no previous experience of and the thought of messing with the pump, fuel tank and fuel in general required me to pluck up courage and just go for it.
The following documents the journey I went on that comprised getting the job done over two attempts and almost giving in and asking a new business created by a club member to do the job in-between.
I got the car back into the garage and emptied my mandatory travel tools and parts out in order to access the fuel tank.
Tumblr media
Inside the "Frunk" of the DeLorean, under the mat is this sunken area where the original spare tyre resides. I took this out, the first time I'd touched it since getting the car back following restoration in 2016. Once set aside I undid the screws to the access panel as seen above. This would expose the fuel tank and associated hoses and equipment.
Tumblr media
For reference the photo above shows, beneath the access panel, the fuel feed and return hoses coming from the fuel pump seal that covers the pump boot (that houses the pump). The boot is set into the tank, the black area beneath and surrounding the boot. On the left the fuel hoses attach to the pipes that flow eventually to the engine at the rear of the car.
With the access panel removed I could smell the over-powering odour of fuel (and odour but one of those strangely nice ones...). Mild panic set in when I saw the remnants of spilt fuel. I could see that the boot seal was a strange shape and not clamped down by the jubilee clip. I lifted the accessible part of the seal and could see the pump covered in fuel residue. Wondering how this had happened, and how it had apparently seeped over and out onto the top of the fuel tank, I decided to start the car to get the pump working. The following video is what I was confronted with.
youtube
The shakiness of the above video gives some idea of the "holy crap" moment I was experiencing. At this same time I had also noticed that the fuel feed and return lines were also deteriorating, showing signs of cracking all along the outside.
I had to figure out what to do next, so after switching the engine off, the fuel in the boot drained back into the tank and I stepped away from the offending car and did some research and messaging with the DeLorean Eurotec club over the course of the next week.
I watched some videos on YouTube to learn how the fuel pump assembly works and fits together so I could become familiar with this journey into the unknown. I specifically got benefit from the following two,
The first part of this video showing the extraction of the pump and it's assembly:
youtube
The following for learning how the fuel feed and return hoses attach.
youtube
I realised I needed to buy some parts so got on to DeLoreanGo.com and ordered,
SKU 106979 Fuel Hose - return and feed line
SKU 101391PU Polyurethane Fuel Pump Boot
SKU 106684PU Polyurethane Fuel Pump Cover Seal
SKU SP10830 W1 Steel Spring Clip for Fuel Pump Boot
SKU SP10356 Stainless Hose Clamp (lower fuel pump boot)
SKU 10349 Stainless Hose Clamp
Needless to say the turnaround at DeLoreanGo.com was amazingly fast and they arrived in a couple of days.
Next weekend
On 8th October I rolled the car out of the garage to start work. I was going to
Replace the feed and return fuel lines
Replace the fuel pump boot
Fit the W1 steel spring clip that was missing
Replace the fuel pump boot cover seal
I made sure I had noted what goes where. I took the following photos to remind me which hose was the feed and the return, and which colour electrical connects went to positive and negative terminals
Tumblr media
The feed is the hose from the banjo to right of the two fuel pipes, and the return runs from the left.
Tumblr media
The black wire is the negative whilst the red is the positive.
Whilst the boot was in situ, the pump was surprisingly moveable which I'm not sure it should have been. This made it difficult to pull the fuel hoses off and could have been a possible reason for why the boot was filling with fuel.
I undid the hose clamps to the fuel hoses and with plenty of tissue at the ready, in case of spills, I manipulated them until free at both ends.
Tumblr media
So far so good. Next it was time to fit the new hoses, boot and seal and to reconnect the wires to the terminals. Easier said than done!
These were the parts purchased from DeLoreanGo.com. I had already transferred the return hose and support ring to the new boot.
Tumblr media
Whilst removing the old hoses and attaching the new ones required a lot of manipulation and strength, I found this task to be less troublesome than the YouTube videos had implied.
The first connections were made to the pipes. It was as I was getting ready to attach them to the pump that I spotted how cracked the fuel pick up hose was.
Tumblr media
No sooner had I noticed the state of this pick up hose, then as I picked it up to start attaching the fuel hoses it completely disintegrated and broke off.
Tumblr media
With an almost full tank of fuel I had to find a cord to tie and secure the pick up hose to stop it falling back in.
It was clear that I would then need to get the pick up hose replaced, but that then also meant dealing with the baffle and associated parts, plus I had a virtually full tank of fuel. I realised this was as far as I was going to get for the day, and that I should pack away and spend some time thinking about how to tackle the new problem. I couldn't push the car back in to the garage due to the slope of my driveway, so I took a Stanley Knife to the pick up hose to make the end level and then reattached it to the pump. I then attempted to reconnect everything else to enable me to drive the car back in to the garage.
When trying to reconnect the wires to the terminals I could not get the rubber boots back over the connectors, they had turned from malleable to solid rubber with no give. This concerned me greatly since I was unsure what the consequence might be if fuel filled the boot once more when moving the car and these terminals were flooded. I took more advice from the Eurotec club and watched some more YouTube that some cars didn't even have rubber boots and also experienced similar flooding to me. So I risked it. Fortunately nothing happened and I was able to drive the car back into the garage.
Over the next day or two I searched more videos on YouTube and found the following one particularly useful to explain to me what it takes to replace the fuel pick up hose. It's a great tutorial.
youtube
Watching this also made me realise that my pump/tank had no return hose to return fuel back to the baffle area as well as no Baffle Seal. After watching I also felt confident that this was a job I could do if it were not for the almost full tank of fuel. My ability to do this job flip-flopped over the course of the next week. What was clear to me however was that I would not have this fixed before the following weekend, which was the DeLorean Eurotec October Meeting, 100 miles north in King's Lynn, Norfolk.
Having replayed the above video a few times I then generated a list of the parts I would need. I ordered the following from DeLoreanGo.com,
SKU 106287 Fuel Pickup Hose
SKU 106287A Stainless Fuel Pickup Hose Reinforcement Spring
SKU 106318 Pickup Pipe Baffle Seal
SKU 106286 Viton Lower Return Fuel Hose
SKU SP10573 Stainless Hose Clamp (fuel return pipe)
SKU SP110085 Fuel Pump Terminal Connectors
In true DeLoreanGo.com form these parts then arrived less than 24 hours after ordering with just the regular free shipping option selected.
DeLorean Eurotec October Meet Weekend
That next weekend I attended the Eurotec meet and garnered opinions about how to tackle the fuel pick up hose job. Opinions ranged from "dive in despite the full tank of fuel, it'll be fiddly, messy and your arms might sting somewhat" to "you must drain the tank before starting, then it will be fiddly". I also learnt that weekend how it seemed many owners were also experiencing fuel pump related issues. This is when I came to learn of one owner who had set up his own business for working on DeLorean's. I tentatively arranged for him to come and do mine next time he was in the area, which would have been a few weeks later, however during the journey home I changed my mind.
Close to home I decided to stop to charge my daily driver at Tesla Tottenham. Whilst charging I grabbed myself a tea and biscuits at the showroom. I sat in the lounge and started googling options for pumping out fuel from tanks. It was then I found the following product from Euro Car Parts, and fortuitously there was a branch, open across the road.
I was a little unsure at first but the reviews convinced me, and at £8.99, it wouldn't be a huge loss if it turned out not to be appropriate.
I purchased said pump and over the course of the next week I managed to find sufficient fuel cans/containers for up to 50 litres.
The Weekend after that
Okay, so it's now this recent weekend, the kids are away at Scout camp, it's peaceful at home so now is the time to do this!
I decided to leave the car in the garage this time due to constant rain so there wouldn't be much room around the side of the car to work.
After preparing the area I proceeded to pump the fuel out from the tank. This turned out to be amazingly simple with the new pump, so much so that I almost forgot to film the process. The following shows almost the final fuel being pumped out. The pump can do about 22 litres per minute, which I reckon we achieved, however the clip below is a little slower as the final fuel is trickier to pick up, but it did the job.
youtube
In the end I calculated I had taken approximately 46 litres of fuel out of the tank.
Tumblr media
Following the pumping out I had a peek into the tank with my phone camera.
youtube
Whilst getting ready for pumping out the fuel I of course had to remove the boot and pump. When doing this I could see that the current pick up hose had in fact disintegrated further, unattached to the pump, lying in the tank. I felt relief that I had not attempted to drive up to the previous weekends' DeLorean Eurotec meeting, since once the fuel level would have dropped below the bottom of the pump, it would not have been able to draw any more fuel and I would have been stranded.
The following piece of pick up hose is all that was left attached to the pump, surrounded by the hose clamp.
Tumblr media
I also removed the electrical connections from the pump terminals which I would later trim to attach new connectors and boots. Those boots were rock solid!
Tumblr media
I set the pump and boot assembly to one side and then began tackling removal of the baffle in order to fit the new pick up hose, seal and return line.
The only minor issue I faced in removing the baffle was removing the Fuel Tank Baffle Outer Retainer Spring, DGo SKU 108683. The YouTube video showed it being attached over the top of the baffle to the sides, however as can just be seen in the picture below, mine was attached through the perforations of the lower baffle assembly, which was very tricky to dislodge.
Tumblr media
Once the baffle was removed the stud that the baffle and retaining springs attach to can be seen (near the fuel sender casing)
Tumblr media
With all the components out of the tank I could take a closer look. Below you can see the failed fuel pick up hose complete with filter, the baffle with signs of disintegrated rubber settled on it, and the retaining springs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then reassembled the baffle with the new parts outside of the tank to ensure I knew how it all went together for when I would do it effectively blind inside.
Tumblr media
As mentioned in the YouTube video I found I didn't have the clip to attached the end of the return hose to, so I used a tie to affix it to the baffle.
Since I couldn't make a video of me rummaging around inside the tank to fit all the components of the baffle assembly together, the photo below is a fast forward to the finished job.
Tumblr media
Following the instructions in the YouTube video my only variation was that I did it from a standing position from the front passenger side wing, leaning over with just one hand in the tank. I expected to be really frustrated with this step but I think I got lucky. Everything slotted together nicely and the only minor difficulty encountered was attaching the nut on top of the washer and retainer springs to lock down the baffle. I found the arm of the baffle had an arch in it so I found a metal rod to push down on it, between the springs. Once flat the nut went on easily.
Relieved at the in-tank baffle success I now needed to replace the boots and connectors to the pump wiring.
Below shows the current state of the wires. The picture doesn't relay how solid the boots had become. These can't be replaced without removing the connectors, but even by my standards this is an simple job.
Tumblr media
Below you can see the replaced wires with the new boots and connectors.
Tumblr media
Now for re-connecting the fuel pump assembly and fitting it back into the tank.
Lessons learnt from my first attempt a couple of weeks back is that the positioning of the pump in the boot relative to the electrical connections, the fuel feed and return hose barbs, and the eventual placement in the tank so that hoses do not hinder the re-fastening of the compartment cover panel is very important. It would be a real pain to have to undo it all if you cannot fit the panel after all the hard work. Believe me I found out the hard way!
I'm not saying the following is the "correct" positioning, but it's what worked for me.
Tumblr media
I think the indentations in the pump casing on opposite sides is designed to allow the return pipe to sit nicely in between, however I could not get the hoses to fit sufficiently such that the boot seal then can close nicely over the boot. So the above photo shows how I ended up positioning the pump and return pipe.
Below you can see a side on view that also shows the position of the return pick outside of the boot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then attached the pick up hose to the pump and the return hose to the pipe.
Tumblr media
I inserted the boot into the tank and attached the electrical connections and the feed and return hoses.
Tumblr media
I then completed this part of the job by sliding down the seal and after the below photo was taken, tightened the hose clamp.
Tumblr media
As per the lesson learned, mentioned just above, I had to slightly twist the boot clockwise a little to position the hoses more pointing backwards so the compartment cover could be screwed back in.
Before closing the compartment I wanted to check to see if my low fuel indicator light worked. By my reckoning, with no fuel in the tank I should be able to turn ignition to position two and see the light illuminated in the binnacle.
Tumblr media
Either my theory was wrong or my low fuel light wasn't working, as I had long suspected. I next put back a couple of litres of fuel and tried again also fully starting the car, no luck, then added up to five litres, repeated, and still nothing.
Finally I pumped all fuel back in to the tank.
Tumblr media
and after starting the car for a final check, replaced the compartment cover.
Tumblr media
Job done! Hopefully...
Upcoming jobs that I'll aim to document soon include fitting a fan override switch, and fitting new circuit breaker holder clips.
Stay tuned!

How to Prepare a Roof for Winter Weather
Tumblr media
As winter approaches, ensuring your roof is ready for the cold, snow, and ice is crucial. A well-prepared roof can prevent costly damage and extend the lifespan of your roofing materials. In this article, we’ll discuss essential steps to take to prepare your roof for winter weather, focusing on maintaining Residential Roofs in Mystic CT, and how professional roofers can help.
Inspect Your Roof
The first step in preparing your roof for winter is a thorough inspection. Look for any signs of damage, including:
Missing or Damaged Shingles: Check for any shingles that are cracked, curled, or missing. These can create vulnerabilities that allow moisture to seep into your home.
Flashing Issues: Inspect the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights. Ensure it is securely attached and free from rust or damage, as this can lead to leaks.
Gutters and Downspouts: Clear out any debris from gutters and downspouts to prevent blockages. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, leading to ice dams that can damage your roof.
If you notice any issues during your inspection, it’s best to consult Roofers in Essex CT for professional assistance. They can assess the damage and recommend the necessary repairs.
Clean Your Roof and Gutters
Cleaning your roof is an essential step in winter preparation. Remove leaves, branches, and other debris that can trap moisture against the roofing materials. Excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth, compromising the roof’s integrity.
Additionally, ensure that your gutters are clean and free of obstructions. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and freeze, leading to ice dams and potential damage to your roofing system. Regular cleaning helps maintain proper water drainage, which is critical during winter.
Check Your Insulation
Proper insulation is vital for keeping your home warm during the winter months. Inspect your attic insulation to ensure it is adequate and evenly distributed. Insufficient insulation can lead to heat escaping from your home, causing snow on the roof to melt and refreeze, creating ice dams.
Consider adding insulation if you find areas with low insulation levels. This not only helps prevent ice dams but also improves your home’s energy efficiency, keeping heating costs down.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Good ventilation is just as important as insulation. Proper airflow in your attic helps regulate temperature and prevents moisture buildup. Without adequate ventilation, warm air can become trapped, leading to melting snow that refreezes at the eaves, creating ice dams.
Make sure your roof has adequate vents, such as ridge vents and soffit vents, to allow for proper airflow. If you’re unsure about your roof’s ventilation, consult with Roofers in Glastonbury CT who can evaluate and recommend necessary improvements.
Trim Overhanging Branches
If you have trees near your home, trim any overhanging branches that could fall on your roof during winter storms. Heavy snow and ice can weigh down branches, increasing the risk of them breaking and damaging your roof. Keeping branches trimmed back not only protects your roof but also reduces the amount of debris that could accumulate on the roof and in the gutters.
Prepare for Snow Removal
After a heavy snowfall, it’s essential to remove snow from your roof to prevent it from accumulating and causing damage. Use a roof rake to safely remove snow from the eaves, being cautious not to damage shingles in the process. Avoid climbing onto the roof unless absolutely necessary, as this can increase the risk of slipping and falling.
Call in the Professionals
If you’re not comfortable inspecting your roof or handling repairs, it’s best to call in professionals. Experienced roofers can help ensure your roof is ready for winter and address any issues that may arise. They can also provide advice on maintenance and repairs, ensuring your roof remains in excellent condition throughout the winter months.
Conclusion
Preparing your roof for winter weather is essential for protecting your home from the harsh elements. By inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining your roof, you can prevent costly damage and ensure your roof lasts for years to come. If you encounter any issues during your preparation, don’t hesitate to reach out to professional roofers for assistance. A little proactive care can make a big difference when winter arrives.

Top Reasons to Schedule Regular Garage Door Maintenance in Middlesex, Hudson, and Essex Counties
Introduction:
Your garage door is one of the most frequently used parts of your home, yet it often goes unnoticed until something goes wrong. Regular maintenance is crucial to keep your garage door running smoothly and to avoid costly repairs down the line. Whether you live in bustling Hudson County, peaceful Essex County, or the residential hubs of Middlesex County, scheduling routine garage door maintenance can make a big difference. Here’s why homeowners in these areas should prioritize regular garage door service.
1. Extend the Life of Your Garage Door:
Routine maintenance, such as lubricating moving parts and tightening hardware, ensures that your garage door lasts as long as possible. Without these simple checks, parts like springs, cables, and rollers can wear out faster, leading to breakdowns. By scheduling regular services in towns like Edison, Bayonne, or Montclair, you can save money by preventing the need for early replacements.
2. Improve Home Security:
A garage door is often the largest entry point into your home. If it’s not working correctly, it becomes a security risk. Regular maintenance ensures your garage door functions smoothly and that all security features, like automatic locks and sensors, are in top condition. This is particularly important in urban areas such as Jersey City, Newark, and New Brunswick, where security is a priority.
3. Avoid Inconvenient Breakdowns:
No one wants to deal with a garage door that won’t open or close—especially during the morning rush or bad weather. Simple maintenance tasks like checking the balance of your door or ensuring that the opener works properly can prevent sudden malfunctions. Scheduling annual check-ups can prevent those inconvenient moments, particularly in busy areas like Woodbridge or Hoboken.
Tumblr media
4. Enhance Curb Appeal:
A well-maintained garage door boosts the overall look of your home. If you live in a historic area like Maplewood or Montclair, keeping your garage door in great shape can maintain the aesthetic appeal of your home. Regular cleaning, paint touch-ups, and small repairs will keep your door looking fresh and add to your property’s curb appeal.
5. Save on Energy Bills:
If your garage door isn’t properly insulated or the weatherstripping is worn out, it can affect the energy efficiency of your home. This is especially important for homes in Middlesex County, where winters can be harsh. Replacing worn seals and upgrading to an insulated door during routine maintenance can reduce your energy bills, particularly if your garage is attached to your home.
6. Ensure Safety:
Garage doors are heavy and can be dangerous if not properly maintained. Regular inspections can catch issues like faulty springs, broken cables, or malfunctioning sensors, preventing accidents. In high-traffic homes in areas like Teaneck or Edison, safety is essential, and regular maintenance can help protect your family.
Conclusion:
Regular garage door maintenance is not just about keeping your door functional; it’s about extending its life, ensuring safety, enhancing security, and improving your home’s energy efficiency. If you live in Middlesex, Hudson, or Essex County, scheduling routine check-ups with a professional service can save you time, money, and unnecessary headaches.

Tips and Considerations for Selecting High-Quality Second-Hand Furniture in Essex
Tumblr media
Office Furniture
When it comes to finding high-quality used furniture in Essex, there are several factors to consider to ensure you make a great purchase. Second-hand furniture offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to buying new pieces, but navigating the options can be challenging. Whether you are looking for stylish vintage finds or practical pieces for your home or office, knowing what to look for can make all the difference. Here are some essential tips and considerations to help you select the best second-hand furniture in Essex.
1. Assess the Furniture’s condition
Before buying any second-hand furniture, it’s crucial to evaluate its condition. Look for signs of wear and tear, such as scratches, stains, or broken parts. Check for structural integrity by testing joints, hinges, and drawers to ensure everything functions properly. For upholstered items, inspect the fabric for tears or significant wear. Used fixtures will have been well maintained and will offer durability and style for years to come.
2. Know What You Need
Before you start shopping, make a list of what you need. Measure the space where the furniture will go and consider the style and functionality you’re aiming for. Whether you’re looking for a classic wooden dining table, a modern sofa, or unique decorative pieces, having a clear idea of your requirements will help you focus on finding the right items and avoid impulse buys.
3. Research Local Stores and Online Platforms
Explore various sources for second-hand furniture to find the best deals. Local charity shops, estate sales, and vintage markets in Essex can offer hidden gems. Online platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree also provide a broad range of options. Be sure to compare prices and check reviews for sellers to ensure you are buying from reputable sources.
4. Consider Second-Hand Office Furniture in Essex
If you are shopping for office purposes, look into options for second-hand office furniture in Essex. Many businesses offer premium office furniture at a fraction of the original cost due to office upgrades or downsizing. Consider visiting the resellers or checking out business liquidation sales. You might find sturdy desks, comfortable chairs, and practical storage solutions that are perfect for your workspace.
5. Check for Authenticity and Value
For high-end pieces, ensure that the furniture you are considering is authentic and worth the price. Look for maker’s marks, labels, or certificates of authenticity, especially for designer or antique items. Research the value of the piece online to confirm that you’re getting a good deal. Knowing the original cost and the quality of the item will help you gauge whether you’re making a wise investment.
6. Understand Return Policies and Guarantees
When buying second-hand furniture, it’s important to understand the store’s return policies and any guarantees they offer. Some sellers might offer limited returns or exchanges, so clarify these details before making a purchase. If you’re buying from a private seller, be aware that most sales are final, so ensure you are satisfied with the condition and price before committing.
7. Look for Professional Assistance
If you are unsure about what to look for or need help with larger purchases, consider seeking professional advice. Experts can provide valuable insights into the quality and value of second-hand fixtures. Few Professionals offers a range of services, including bespoke office furniture. They can help you find high-quality options or create customised pieces to meet your specific needs.
Conclusion
Selecting used furniture in Essex can be a rewarding experience if you approach it with the right knowledge and strategies. By assessing the condition of the items, understanding your needs, researching different sources, and considering options, you can find great pieces for your home or office. For those seeking a professional touch, Diamond Office Furniture Ltd. offers both bespoke office furniture in the United Kingdom and used furnishing solutions. Whether you are looking to furnish your home or upgrade your office space, investing in quality second-hand furniture is a smart choice that combines style, functionality, and sustainability.

How to Identify and Treat a Cockroach Infestation
Tumblr media
Cockroaches are unwelcome guests in any home, capable of spreading diseases, triggering allergies, and contaminating food. Identifying and treating a cockroach infestation promptly is crucial to maintain a healthy and hygienic living environment. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to recognize the signs of a cockroach problem and effectively eliminate these resilient pests.
Identifying a Cockroach Infestation
Visible Sightings: The most obvious sign of a cockroach infestation is actually spotting the pests themselves. Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that prefer dark, moist environments, making them elusive during the day. However, if you see them scurrying around at night or even during the day in severe cases, it’s a clear indicator of an infestation.
Droppings: Cockroach droppings resemble black pepper or coffee grounds and are typically found near their hiding places or along baseboards. The size and appearance of the droppings can vary depending on the species of cockroach infesting your home.
Egg Casings: Cockroach egg casings, also known as oothecae, are often found in hidden areas such as behind appliances, in cabinets, or under sinks. These casings are small, oval-shaped, and can indicate a breeding population nearby.
Musty Odor: Cockroaches can produce a distinctive musty odor that becomes more noticeable with a larger infestation. If you detect a lingering, unpleasant smell in areas where cockroaches are likely to hide, it could be a sign of their presence.
Damage to Property: Cockroaches are known to chew through various materials, including paper, cardboard, and even fabric. Finding holes or damage to these items without an obvious cause may indicate cockroach activity.
Treating a Cockroach Infestation
Once you’ve identified a cockroach infestation, taking immediate action is crucial to prevent their numbers from multiplying and spreading further. Here are effective steps to treat a cockroach problem:
Sanitation: Start by eliminating food and water sources that attract cockroaches. Clean up spills promptly, store food in sealed containers, and take out garbage regularly. Cockroaches are attracted to crumbs and food residue, so keeping your kitchen and dining areas clean is essential.
Sealing Entry Points: Cockroaches can enter your home through small cracks and crevices. Seal any gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and vents to prevent them from gaining easy access. Pay attention to areas where utilities enter your home and use caulk or weather stripping as necessary.
Use of Insecticides: Selecting the right insecticide is crucial for effective cockroach control. There are various types of insecticides available, including sprays, baits, and dusts. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and consider seeking professional help for severe infestations.
Baiting: Cockroach baits are effective because they attract cockroaches to consume poisoned bait and then carry it back to their hiding places, where other cockroaches also feed on it. This method can significantly reduce the population over time.
Professional Pest Control Services: For persistent or large-scale infestations, consulting with a pest control professional is highly recommended. Pest Control Essex have the knowledge, tools, and experience to effectively eliminate cockroaches and prevent future infestations.
Prevention Tips
Preventing cockroaches from returning is as important as eliminating them in the first place. Consider these preventive measures:
Regular Inspections: Schedule regular inspections of your home to catch any signs of cockroach activity early.
Reduce Moisture: Cockroaches thrive in humid environments, so using dehumidifiers and fixing leaks promptly can make your home less attractive to these pests.
Store Firewood Properly: If you keep firewood, store it away from the house and elevated from the ground to avoid attracting cockroaches.
By following these guidelines for identifying, treating, and preventing cockroach infestations, you can safeguard your home and family from the health risks associated with these resilient pests. Remember, early detection and swift action are key to effective pest control.

Debunking Myths About Boiler Maintenance in Essex
Boilers are a valuable investment for your home. They help maintain a comfortable everyday environment, especially in the UK's cold weather. This very aspect makes boiler maintenance a must-do. But it's shrouded in several misconceptions, resulting in unnecessary costs and inefficiencies. Here's some factual advice, enabling you to make better decisions regarding boiler installations and heating services.
Myth 1: New Boilers Don't Need Much Maintenance
Fact: Even new boilers need some upkeep. Thus, annual maintenance becomes necessary. This ensures the peak efficiency of the boiler and identifies minor issues before they worsen.
Myth 2: Servicing Is Required When There's a Visible Problem
Fact: Waiting for things to worsen isn't a good idea. If there are any visual or audible signs of trouble, it means the issue has already been escalated. Regular inspection is the key to keeping the system functioning smoothly and safely.
Myth 3: Maintenance Is Too Expensive
Fact: While some cost is associated with servicing, it's less than those unexpected and expensive repairs and replacements. Regular maintenance is cost-effective for those looking to keep their heating expenses in check.
Myth 4: Just Any Handyman Can Service a Boiler
Fact: Boiler maintenance must be performed only by certified and qualified technicians. Someone not trained for this task can void warranties and endanger your household. So, always schedule reliable and reputable heating services in Essex.
Myth 5: Higher Heating Capacity Equals Better Performance
Fact: A boiler with a larger heating capacity will only increase energy costs and experience more wear. On the other hand, a smaller boiler will again undergo frequent breakdowns and won't heat effectively. Proper sizing and professional boiler installation in Essex are the key.
The Bottom Line
Whether you're considering installing a new boiler or wish to keep your current system up-to-date, staying informed is important. This helps extend the life of your boiler, enhancing its safety and efficiency. If necessary, partner up with specialists for expert advice.
