Despite the fact that they share an apartment in their home base of Chicago and spend hours together on trains traveling across the country, neither of them have been able to tell each other how they feel. Until one July, on an Empire Builder run from Seattle to Chicago, sparks fly off of more than just the rails and they finally find themselves forced to reckon with their relationship. With forty-six hours of travel ahead of them, will they finally admit their feelings or will their friendship crumble with the passing miles?

Excerpt: They’ve just pulled out of Edmonds, Washington, and for the moment none of Dean’s passengers have any queries. He’ll do a quick breeze around the car for the menus in a few minutes, but right now he takes a moment to straighten his tie.  It doesn’t seem to matter how many times he sees Cas a day (which is, in case anyone was wondering, a lot of times) or how many days, collectively, there have been (over three thousand, definitely), he still feels like his heart is going to leap out of his throat. The thing is, though, Cas hasn’t said a word, not a peep about any potential, y’know, feelings, and this is a guy who can go on and on about a subject for hours at the drop of a hat (especially if the subject is trains). Dean knows that Cas regularly gets numbers given to him by passengers on the train, because he’s just that handsome, especially after he got a haircut and the world could see his ocean-blue eyes. Cas is tall and oddly strong for someone who spends all day microwaving things and making coffee, and one day, one of those numbers will be the right one, and Dean’ll go packing, put in for a transfer to another route (as much as it’ll break his heart), and that’ll be that.  So Dean keeps all of those feelings pushed down firmly, locked up tight right where they belong.

And the reason that housing is a good investment for corporations is because it is scarce. Because we have underbuilt something like 5 million units in this country. For a variety of reasons - corporate builders and lenders pulling back from building anything not guaranteed to sell quickly since 2007, the fact that all levels of government have mostly stopped building social housing (relying on subsidized housing from public private partnerships) but most of all because very normal suburbanites and the people they have elected have decided that there should be No More Houses. Many cities, like San Fran, DC, LA and Seattle are primarily zoned for nothing denser than a row house, while dense cities like Boston and New York are surrounded by suburbs where it is illegal to build anything that isn't a single family home on a quarter acre lot. This is great for people who already own homes, in some ways, because their home increases in value, which is half the point about government subsidized home ownership in mid 20th century America - subsidizing the wealth creation of (white) households rather than creating a welfare state that would benefit everyone. Also, it aligned the interests of the middle class with that of Capital, at least in some respects, while workers continued to get fucked over in other ways (401ks also do this). But the thing is, if housing goes up in value fast enough, it becomes a good investment for corporations and hedge funds and flippers. Basically if housing prices are rising faster than the stock market, hedge funds are going to buy houses.

The solution is to build enough housing that it becomes a bad investment. This includes abolishing single family zoning, sure, but will also need to include a lot of social housing. It will also mean that the American middle class will no longer have the Ponzi scheme of buying houses of ever increasing value and selling them to the next sucker (which has already broken down, because wages are stagnating and the next sucker can no longer afford the house).
