The Great Square of Pegasus // Ireneusz Nowak
Read below the cut for some info about some of the stars in this image as well as an annotated image to guide the eye!
Starting with Pegasus first, in order of brightness:
Scheat (β Pegasi) is a red giant star that forms the upper right corner of the Great Square. It is about 196 light years away and has swelled to over 100 times the size of the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase Al Sā'id meaning "the upper arm".
Markab (α Pegasi) is a blue-white star located about 133 light years away, marking the lower right corner of the Great Square. Its name comes from an Arabic word markab meaning "the saddle of the horse".
Algenib (γ Pegasi) is a blue subgiant star about 470 light years away and marks the lower left corner of the Great Square. It has a mass of about 9 times that of the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-jānib meaning "the flank".
Matar (η Pegasi) is a yellow-white star about 196 light years away. It is a binary system, with the primary being about 25 times larger than the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase Saʽd al Maṭar meaning "lucky star of rain".
Homam (ζ Pegasi) is a blue star about 204 light years away. It is only about 4 times as large as the Sun, but is emitting over 200 times the light. The origin of the name is unclear, but it likely comes from the Arabic phrase Sa'd al Humam meaning "lucky star of the hero."
Sadalbari (μ Pegasi) is a yellow giant star about 113 light years from Earth and is about 9 times the size of the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase saʿd al-bāriʿ meaning "the lucky star of the splendid one."
ι Pegasi is a binary star system about 39 light years away. The primary is a yellow-white star about the mass of the Sun but 1.5 times the size.
λ Pegasi is a yellow giant star about 365 light years away. It is about 1.5 times the mass of the Sun, but over 28 times the size of the Sun.
Next up are the few stars in Andromeda, in order of brightness:
Alpheratz (α Andromedae) is a binary star system that forms the upper left corner of the Great Square. The primary is a blue-white star with about 3.5 times the mass of the Sun. The entire system is located about 97 light years from Earth. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase surrat al-faras meaning "navel of the horse".
Mirach (β Andromedae) is a red giant star about 200 light years from Earth. It is only about 2.5 times as massive as the Sun, but has swelled to over 85 times that of the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic word mīzar meaning "girdle".
δ Andromedae is a triple star system about 105 light years from Earth. The primary is a orange giant star about the mass of the Sun, but about 13 times the size.
μ Andromedae is a blue-white star about 130 light years from Earth. It is about twice the mass and three times the size of the Sun.
ν Andromedae is a binary star system about 620 light years from Earth and appears very close to the Andromeda Galaxy on the sky. The primary is a blue star about six times as massive as the Sun.
Finally, two stars in Pisces:
ν Piscium is a binary star system about 365 light years away. The primary is an orange giant star about 1.6 times the mass of the Sun with almost 35 times the size.
τ Piscium is an orange giant star about 169 light years away. It is slightly more massive than the Sun, but 10 times the size.

happy Mahāśivarātri! 🙏 reflecting today on the need to destroy within that which is familiar to be reborn as new. a poem inspired by the homam witnessed at the Chidambaram Temple (pictured):
Agni is starved
mantra pours into the fire ghee pours into the fire milk pours into the fire curd pours into the fire sugar pours into the fire silk pours into the fire
fear pours into the fire past pours into the fire doubt pours into the fire attachment pours into the fire woe pours into the fire ire pours into the fire
Agni licks his lips
quenching the homam within, i wear the embers on my eyelids with each blink i regenerate.
Har Har Mahādeva!
🔱 further context: scholar Richard K. Payne explores homa as symbiosis between fire, the deity invoked in and concomitantly identified with the fire, and with the practitioner, who themselves becomes ‘ritually identified with both the deity and the fire’. in this, the offerings immolated in the fire are connoted with ‘spiritual obstacles that impede the practitioner from full awakening’. most significantly, ‘the practitioner’s own inherent wisdom is identified with the fire, and just as the offerings are transformed and purified, the practitioner’s own spiritual obstacles are, as well’. (2017)
Payne interestingly identifies two strains of interpretation of the ritual: first, ‘the yogic interiorization of ritual found in post-Vedic Indian religion, more as a form of esoteric physiology than as a psychologized understanding of visualization’; second, ‘the sexual symbolism' 'attached to all aspects of fire rituals’. (2017)

The Benefits of Performing Chandi Homam
Tumblr media
Chandi Homam is a powerful Vedic ritual dedicated to Goddess Chandi, a fierce form of the Divine Mother. Performing this homam invokes her blessings for protection, success, and the removal of obstacles. It is particularly effective in overcoming negativity, ensuring victory in challenges, and fulfilling desires. This sacred fire ritual involves the recitation of the Durga Saptashati, a potent text that praises the goddess's strength and compassion. By performing Chandi Homam, devotees can achieve spiritual growth, peace, and prosperity, while also safeguarding themselves and their loved ones from negative influences.

CHANDI SADHANA Q&A
*Q1. Is learning Chandi safe ?*
Will teach properly as per tradition in proper Krama. If you learn and practice as advised, Chandi will only bring very good materialistic outcomes.
*Q2. Chandi is an independent stream right ?*
Yes. It is an independent stream. Chandi itself can offer Bhukti and Mukti. Chandi gives quicker materialistic results, as it more Rajasic, compared to Srividya which is more Sattvic.
*Q3. Can I manage Chandi Sadhana with Srividya & Naga ?*
Cannot give an average time. Majority of my students are working professionals who attends several workshop along with Srividya and Naga. Learning and practice will go on in parallel. If you focus on constraints, then hard to make any progress. When genuinely interested then other things will align. Long duration 2 to 3 yr course, I will not repeat for another 10 to 15 years minimum. There is a high chance I will only teach it once in my life, to transfer the knowledge I acquired. So learn when you get the chance.
*Q4. Can I just attend the Saptashati chant or just Ganapati Havan?*
Either learn properly or don't learn. It is monthly fee, so can drop anytime. However once dropped, cannot join back based on choice. I want only those who can learn properly as per krama.
*Q5. Can I come and learn Chandi Havan or can you suggest where it is taught in person ?*
Everything about Chandi generates money. Doing a Chandi Havan costs in Lakhs, if you call punits for Saptashati parayana that also is a package in lakhs, if you ask them to do havan or japa with Navakshari, that is also in lakhs. So no traditional lineages will teach Chandi Sadhana as it is a source of huge revenue. Those who teach Chandi, will expect you to go around with them for free to such revenue events as service, and spend years with them like I did as an assisstant to learn. That too they agree if that have personal connect and knows you will do well as assisstant. It is not something that can be learned with 5 or 10 days of stay. So in short you will not find a single online or in-person center for this. There are many commercial Vedic chant experts who are teaching Saptashati chant, and many commercial centers who give Navakshari, Siddha Kunjika, etc. These are all useless for a proper Tantra aspirant who needs systematic learning and guidance in Chandi Sadhana. Once you learn, you can also earn a lot from Ganapati Havan, Chandi Havan, Saptashati Parayana, Saptashati Commentary, prayogas for astro remedies, teaching any of these, and many other ways. In short it has high commercial value and sadhaka also gets lot of materialistic outcomes quickly. So no one teaches, considering its commercial value.
