why wandering clown is wataru singing to eichi
Tumblr media
or, wataru's second solo from the fine trip album lyric analysis as seen through a wataei lens (honestly though this song is so incredibly specific to his and Eichi's story 😭)
Thank you to lucidstars on youtube, whose translation I based this off. Let's begin!
Verse 1: A wandering clown crosses the sea of stars while taking light steps, as if kicking beads
'Sea of stars' makes me think of outer space, how Wataru views himself as an alien or monster, something otherworldly.
A few other things come to mind: stars are very Eichi symbolism, like in his first solo Shining Star; and Jingle Bells, when the Angel flies through the sky with Eichi. The beads are immediately reminiscent of Eichi's solo Crystal Pleasure. (There's actually an insane number of parallels between the two solos as we'll see.)
The applause is for you, my whole soul that goes into a whirlpool of emotion And to be able to lock eyes with you in the garden of joy would be such a wonderful thing (showtime)
This is a stretch but walk with me. The first line is daydream. "A resounding applause (kassai ga hibiki wataru)" is the first line. The applause was for Eichi alone, while Wataru was enmeshed by all his conflicting feelings at the time.
In Wataru's words to Eichi in Blackbird, which directly follows daydream: "It’s as though something I cannot quite comprehend is stirring inside me", "as though he were a child who had just tripped for the very first time in his life."
I tried looking up garden of joy (歓喜の園 kanki no sono) to see if it was a reference but couldn't find anything. But I did think of the garden of Eden and the idea of exfine being holy angels, divination...idk.
Chorus: Let’s sew countless sparkles into this dream Sing as the wings of love flap Tonight at the end of the world, the clown you invited Will deliver a surprising song you’ve never heard before
This part screams Blackbird, where Eichi and Wataru write the next part of their story. In fact this is pretty much blatantly repeated by Eichi in Crystal Pleasure: "I want to connect all the sparkling moments" and "let me give you happy dreams". (I really have to do a separate analysis for Crystal).
Wings of love --> can be Wataru's bird imagery, callback to Jingle Bells' Angel, or the continued bird imagery in Blackbird
"At the end of the world"- In Neo Sanctuary, fine sings "And that is the Neo Sanctuary, the blooming new world I offer this victory to". In the same sense, they were at the end of the old world, about to embark on a new one, with the clown that Eichi invited... to fine :) [Oh this is ALSO mentioned in Crystal Pleasure's second chorus: "I’ll invite you into the brilliance, towards the tomorrow that you wish for"] This is one of the most blatant Wataei parts of the two solos.
Verse 2: Tied together with mischief, the melody of the constellations echo so close to each other every time you resonate your wish I want to speak to those eyes of yours, on this stage coloured by enthusiasm
The star imagery continues... Suspiciously in alignment with Crystal Pleasure. I will note that the same word for wish 望む is used here as in Crystal's second chorus. Both Wandering and Crystal sing about eyes countless times, I'll let you play with that yourselves.
But maybe I’m the only one who wants that When the curtain rises, the boundaries fade away I can almost feel your breath, you beautiful person
This part. Ough. Again, walk with me, this is like a reverse, or parallel of daydream. "Maybe I'm the only one who wants that"--when Wataru, unlike the other Eccentrics, was always fascinated by Eichi and even went to join fine, to the befuddlement of the rest.
In daydream, Wataru catches Eichi as the curtain falls, telling him that the audience is still watching, and commenting that it's unsightly (jury's out on whether he was talking about Eichi or himself, but anyway). Meanwhile, Eichi thinks Wataru "beautiful". They are so close that Eichi coughs up blood on Wataru's face.
These last lines of the second verse aren't daydream, but they're the present. Instead of a falling curtain, it's a rising curtain. And they're close as ever, so close he can feel his breath. And in this implied performance, they're standing on the same stage. In Wataru's words in Diner Live: "I wanted to stand on the same stage as you, Tenshouin Eichi [...] Unlike the confrontation of the past, a “what-if” that shows a past where we are standing shoulder-to-shoulder, or maybe even in the present. That’s the kind of dream I wanted to see."
Yeah. I'm. I'm normal
The second chorus ends with two different lines:
Tonight at the end of the world, the clown you're dancing with Will deliver an incredible dream just as you wish for
At this point
Tumblr media
they're just not hiding anything are they.
Now that I'm done destroying myself here, I have to do Crystal Pleasure god i have to do crystal pleasure. I hope u enjoyed this post! Thank you for listening to me bend my back over for them. Feel free to add on if you noticed anything else.

Ugh. This was terrible. This tiny beach was far too small for Reika, much less Hibiki and his new mass. was not at all prepared to cram himself into....this. Reika had wandered off, though not very far. There was a city in the distance, but from the looks of how dense the forest here was, no one was going to bother them anyway.
“Hibiki -- Hibiki?”
The articuno chirped, turning her head just enough to see Hibiki simply retreat back into the ocean and lay his head on the sandbar, careful not to let his horn knock against the cliffs.
“What. I’m not going anywhere. We’re just here for you to eat some roughage right?”
Tumblr media
The weather was nice.. Though he looked half-dead, the suicune’s ears were moving, keeping alert to Reika’s movements and..potentially humans. If they were challenged he was sure he could just kill them, but it was inconvenient not being able to use that human form right now.

Top five Curepuz cards based on pictures alone, not abilities
ok, we all know I’m gonna rave for hours about the dress up collection now.
5. Honoka’s white chocolate dress. Her hairstyle looks like it took ages, that’s impressive! There’s also the roses- I counted 17 visible ones, and since that didn’t include her other earring or the back of the dress or anything under the overskirt, she has over TWENTY total roses on her dress! To say nothing of the huge ribbon things on her skirt that make her look like Belle, except Belle’s outfit isn’t nearly as fabulous as this. Honoka’s got golden pearls and the top layer of her skirt reminds me of part of the Sophie Era Evergirl Uniform from the Ever Never Handbook. Not to mention the skirt trim and the part over the cream roses, which looks like frosting and chocolate drizzle and manages to make it look good. You can really tell that Nagisa and Honoka’s 5-stars are meant to be dark chocolate and white chocolate. Look at the parallels with their dresses, too: the identical roses and flowers, the golden pearls, the black lace wrap thing, the web-like piece, the light fabric with the X pattern. And don’t forget the backdrop Honoka has. The fountain, the colourful fairy lights, the starry night sky. All those lights remind me of the Aurora Winter Festival that I go to each year. And the fountain is definitely magical in some way.
4. Hibiki’s piano key dress. Those gloves! The ribbons on her shoes, and the little note clips! The sash with the white edge that looks not quite pearls, not quite ruffles, and with the massive bow at the back with the lace edge and musical note print! An example of how to do prints and patterns right. Same with the hair bows and that skirt, with all the ruffles and lace. Speaking of ruffles, that is one of my favourite sleeve styles out there. And the treble clef earrings, whoa! But the best part is probably the freaking PIANO KEY pattern on her skirt in a dozen shades of pink. What better way to communicate “musical princess”? Don’t forget the background: the rainbow notes in the air, the flowers, the sunny sky and the lake, the CASTLE!! Is she a pop star or a princess? She’s both. She looks like the princess of a magical kingdom, a princess who’s renowned for her singing off the balcony until she wound up putting on shows at royalty events. And what better way to show it off than a dress that combines the best parts of pop star outfits and princess outfits?
3. Miyuki’s flower fairy dress. There’s just something so magical about seeing a girl sitting in a giant flower, surrounded by butterflies and sunshine. (eat your heart out, Cure Felice.) Miyuki looks just like a fairy even without the flowers and storybook, what with the skirt and off-the-shoulder sleeves all made of dozens of flower petals, the huge butterfly over the little flower-shaped gem on her dress, the matching flower belt and necklace and hair accessories, OH GOD THOSE HAIR ACCESSORIES. Several kinds of flowers, accented with golden ribbons that match the gold pearls in the flowers. Not to mention that she’s LITERALLY GLOWING! Look closely at the 5-star, she’s surrounded by glow! It’s like she took the best parts of Blossom, Felice, and Dream, combined them, and dialed them up so much that those 3 look weak. All hail the queen of the fairies!
2. Miki’s sea goddess outfit. I can feel the beach air, smell the saltwater, and hear the sound of crashing waves just by looking at her. The way her dress and hair blow in the wind! The lace skirt! The top part that looks like a massive seashell! The golden pearl sleeves and necklace, that pearl belt with the sea star! Don’t forget the back bow that makes her look as if Princess Serenity turned into a siren enchantress. And her HAIR! The pearls, roses, stars, braids, I can’t handle how gorgeous she is, I’d compare her to a mermaid but no mermaid could ever match up. Miki is the goddess of the oceans, the enchantress queen who has arisen from the water for a stroll across the beach. And she’s got me under her spell.
1. Yukari’s princess attire. LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL SHE IS!!!!! The roses, the pearls, the ruffles and flounces, the flower petals sprinkled on her skirt, the lace! It’s so perfect for her, and it goes amazingly well with Akira’s prince outfit! Not to mention that she’s in an enchanted forest with a palace! This is hands-down the best background for any card in the game. The dozens of glowing floating stars, the white trees that look like they’re made of frosted crystal, the night sky with hundreds of stars, the glowing white palace that looks right out of a Disney princess movie... And, oh yeah, Yukari is also LITERALLY GLOWING. Just like Miyuki, only even more noticeable, she’s surrounded by the heavenly glow of magic. She is the truest legacy princess. I’m just picturing Yukari and Akira in their 5-stars dancing the night away while floating on a trail of glowing stars over the enchanted forest, singing a romantic duet as they get sprinkled with stardust and all the animals of the forest turn to look at the sight.
Honourable mention goes to:
-Akane’s 5-star for its rainbow-and-flower backdrop, the fact that it’s basically made of ruffles, and AKANE WITH HER HAIR DOWN AKANE WITH HER HAIR DOWN
-Setsuna’s black-and-red gothic lace dress, where she’s lounging on the fancy chaise among hundreds of red roses, complete with plush carpet and fancy wallpaper. Also, look closely at her shoes- the red bottoms. Setsuna is wearing Louboutins! Holy crap, where did she manage to get the money to afford that?
-Kurumi’s dress with the roses and the FUR WRAP. The dress is amazing, especially with the mink, but it’s the backdrop that’s the best part. Girl in a princess gown at night standing on a fancy gazebo surrounded by blue roses, string lights, and flower petals! And how the entire town is her backdrop, with the snow on roofs and warm gold glow from inside the houses. It’s just so pretty...
-Aoi’s concert outfit because it’s just so cool. Seeing any precure in a lot of black and working it is pretty cool, but it’s made even cooler with the gold lame and the stars. But the best part is that layered part at the back that looks like a starry night sky. She is the galaxy! Also, the FISHNETS. THE FREAKING FISHNETS
-Yuri’s 5-star because it inspired a fanfic. Rare is the dress that inspires people to write stories.
-any dress up collection outfit that includes a tiara. As if these outfits don’t scream “PRINCESS” enough already.

765PRO Idols and its Saints
I have so much time to end this month because tomorrow in my home country, it’s September. Which means that some Christmas songs will play in malls. Oh, and I manage to pull it out through so here are the girls from 765PRO!
Tumblr media
1/21 - Takane Shijou
St. Agnes: Virgin and martyr and is one of seven women who, along with the Blessed Virgin, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. She is depicted in art with a lamb, evoking her name which resembles the Latin word for 'lamb', agnus, an is shown holding a palm, symbolzing her martyrdom. Although that she is the patron saint of girls and chastity, she had two major shrines in Rome - the Sant'Agnese fuori le mura (Saint Agnes Outside the Walls) and Sant'Agnese in Agone. It is customary on her feast day for two lambs to be brought from the Trappist abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome to the Sant'Agnese in Agone church to be blessed by the Pope. And on Holy Thursday, they are shorn, and from the wool is woven the pallium which the pope gives to a newly consecrated metropolitan archbishop as a sign of his jurisdiction and his union with the pope.
2/25 - Chihaya Kisaragi
St. Donatus of Zadar: Also known as 'Donato of Zara', he is a Dalmatian saint who became a bishop and a diplomat for the Dalmatian city-state of Zadar (Zara). He is mentioned in Frankish annals from 805 as an ambassador of the Dalmatian cities to Charlemagne in Thionville and is credited for initiating either construction or expansion of the Church of the Holy Trinity.
3/25 - Yayoi Takatsuki
St. Dismas the Repentant Thief: In the Holy Bible's New Testament, he is one of two unnamed thieves in the Gospel of Luke. He describes him asking Jesus to 'remember him' when Jesus will have 'come into' his kingdom (Lk 23:39-43). Officially venerated by the Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of prisoners (especially the condemned) and San Dimas, Mexico.
4/3 - Haruka Amami
St. Luigi Scrosoppi: Italian priest from the Oratorians and is known as the founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Cajetan of Thiene. Luigi gave himself tirelessly to fundraising, and was soon running an organisation which accommodated 100 boarders and 230 day pupils in a building which became known as the House of the Destitute. Canonized as a saint by Pope St. John Paul II in 2001, he was appointed the patron saint of footballers by Bishop Alois Schwarz at a church service in the Austrian parish of Pörtschach on August 22, 2010.
5/5 - Iori Minase
St. Aventinus of Tours: Honored by the Church, he was a hermit and a close friend of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Living the life as a hermit in Tours before being ordained a deacon and subsequently accompanied him to the Synod of Tours in 1163. He settled in Touraine after the archbishop’s martyrdom in 1170, where he remained and spend his final years until his death.
5/22 - The Futami Twins (Ami and Mami)
St. Rita of Cascia: Italian widow and nun from the Augustinian order and is famously known for her monicker, 'The Saint of the Impossible'. Various miracles are attributed to her intercession, and she is often portrayed with a bleeding wound on her forehead, which is understood to indicate a partial stigmata. In May 1900, Pope Leo XIII canonized her as a saint and she was bestowed the title of Patroness of Impossible Causes, while in many Catholic countries, Rita came to be known as the patroness of abused wives and heartbroken women. Her incorrupt body remains in the Basilica of Santa Rita da Cascia.
6/23 - Ritsuko Akizuki
St. Joseph Cafasso: Italian priest who was a significant social reformer and was one of the so-called 'Social Saints' who emerged during that particular era. Joseph is known as the 'Priest of the Gallows' due to his extensive work with those prisoners who were condemned to death. His major shrine can be found at Santuario della Consolata in Turin, and is canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XII in June 1947.
7/19 - Azusa Miura
St. Arsenius of Corfu: Also known as 'Arsenius of Kerkyra', he is one of the principal patron saints of Corfu alongside Spyridon, Born in Constantinople to the Jewish faith, he became a Christian and is Corfu's first bishop.
8/29 - Makoto Kikuchi
The Passion of St. John the Baptist: Known as ’The Beheading of the Forerunner’ and ’Decollation of Saint John the Baptist’, is a event in the Bible and it’s a holy day that is observed by Christian churches. According to the Gospel of Mark (6:14-27), it commemorates the martyrdom by beheading John on the orders of Herod Antipas through the vengeful request of his step-daughter Salome and her mother Herodias on the king’s birthday.
10/10 - Hibiki Ganaha
St. Cerbonius: Populonian bishop who lived in the time of the Barbarian invasion. Gregory the Great praises him in Book XI of his Dialogues. Another tradition states that Cerbonius was a native of North Africa who was the son of Christian parents. Ordained a priest by Regulus, though not the same one as in the Scottish Legend. One of the saint's attributes was a bear licking his feet, because during Totila's invasion of Tuscany, he was ordered to be killed by a wild bear, the bear remained petrified before him. It stood on two legs and opened its jaws wide. Then, it fell back on its paws and licked the feet of the saint.
11/23 - Miki Hoshii
Pope St. Clement I: 4th successor of St. Peter and is along with Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp of Smyrna, he is one of the Apostolic Fathers. Clement was imprisoned under Emperor Trajan according to tradition and is executed by being tied to an anchor and thrown in the sea. He is recognized as a saint in many Christian churches and is considered a patron saint of mariners and stone-cutters.
12/24 - Yukiho Hagiwara
Christmas Eve: The day before Christmas. It is widely observed as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day. Together, both days are considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and Western society. The idea of Jesus being born at night is reflected in the fact that Christmas Eve is referred to as Heilige Nacht (Holy Night) in German, Nochebuena (the Good Night) in Spanish and similarly in other expressions of Christmas spirituality, such as the song ’Silent Night, Holy Night’.

// After watching the King of the Monsters movie, and still wishing for a crossover between the Godzilla and Symphogear franchises, I got a better idea of how it could work.//
Some time after defeating Adam, an asteroid falls in the antartic ocean, wich takes every goverment in the world off guard because it suddenly appeared. When research teams arrive to investigate the incident, Ghidorah comes out destroying every boat and aerial transport the researchers brought; but they managed to send a videocall asking for help in wich the three headed dragon can be seen for a moment.
Based on this the United Nations ask for SONG's assitance, given the relic users hold a lpt of power; Ghidorah arrives to Sidney ( because is a mayor city close to the antartic region ) and starts destroying the city; Hibiki and friends arrive to face the monster but despite they manage to hurt him, Ghidorah overwhelmed the girls and they had to make a tactical retreat.
After his victory Ghidorah makes a mighty roar over the destroyed city, and things get more out of control. In China, Mexico and the middle of the Pacific ocean huge earthquakes take place wich puzzles the united nations even more, and what happens next makes them believe the end of the world have begun. As Mothra, Rodan and Godzilla awaken from their slumber, but, unlike what they believed Rodan and Godzilla heads towards Ghidorah, while Mothra stood in Chida and made her cocoon to grew and become an adult.
In shock everyone in Song watches the clash between Rodan and Godzilla against Ghidorah, and they noticed that the dragon didnt had the scars of the injuries the girls managed to make on him; revealing its ability to regenerate and heal its wounds. Ghidorah takes the lead in the battle and Rodan taking note of how powerfull the dragon is decides to betray Godzilla and attack him instead; and the monster is defeated.
Genjurou decides that given neither the girls or that giant reptile could defeat the dragon on their own, the best could be to join forces; given Godzilla didnt attack directly the human vehicles that he saw on his way so he seemed to dont mind the people; the problem was to find Godzilla in the deep ocean, and like if his question were answered Mothra in her adult form appeared and illuminated a specific place in the ocean, not too far from where Godzilla was defeated.
With the submarine-base SONG searched for Godzilla, but what they found blew their minds, a sunken ancient city, and in the middle of it a massive temple. Inside they found diverse murals showing people using the relics the Symphogears are based to fight giant creatures, while others such as Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan were worshipped as gods. Puzzled about their recent discovery the team (Genjurou, the girls and some others) found after some time an empty chamber and what they were looking for: Godzilla, resting after his tough battle and trying to recover his energy, but looking at how he struggled to even breathe the group was unsure if he would make it.
Then Hibiki came up with an idea, 'what if we give it some of the relic's energy ? that may help it'. Chris complained telling the idea was stupid, however Tsubasa and Maria supported the idea since trying wont hurt. And after Genjurou gave his approval, the girls circled Godzilla's head and placed their relics on his skin, and in unison all sang their grupal holy chant; at first nothing happened and Chris complained again while Hibiki felt frustrated, then all of a sudden Godzilla opened his eyes and raised his head staring at the group; then he simply moved to get out of the temple, and everyone knew he wasnt really a threat to them; the group of Song members leaved after Godzilla was gone, taking photo and videos of the temple and city on their way out.
At this point Ghidorah and Rodan have destroyed a few mayor cities around the world, and they arrived at Tokyo, the armed forces launched everything they had at them but Rodan and Ghidorah simply destroyed everything, then Godzilla and Mothra arrived at the scene to face them, along some more armed forces from the remaining unscathed countries and the relic users. And the clash began, Hibiki, Tsubasa and Chris gave support to Godzilla while Maria, Kirika and Shirabe helped Mothra to battle Rodan, but the energy of the relics wasnt enough to keep the pace of the kaiju and Hibiki began to feel insecure about if her idea was a good one at all, specially because once again Ghidorah dominated the fight pretty quickly. And the worst of all, Tsubasa managed to cut one of Ghidorah's heads using Heaven's Wrath before running out of energy but after the dragon left Godzilla weakened and lying on the ground he regenerated his head, to the shock and horror of everyone.
Everyone was out of energy, Rodan was defeated by Mothra after Maria and company couldnt help anymore and they all watched how Mothra tried to give her energy to help Godzilla, and how she sacrificed herself to protect him from Ghidorah's blast, the energy of the fallen Mothra went into Godzilla and the relic users; awakening the burning state in godzilla and in the girls something Ogawa named 'Mothra X-drive', basically the X-drive but all the girls had wings on their backs that resembled the ones of mothra. After an epic final clash between Ghidorah vs Godzilla and the girls, the three headed beast was incinerated completely. Once the battle was over, Godzilla stared at the group of girls that fought along him, and after that he just went to the sea to dissapear once again.
After that day Hibiki and company knew human kind were not the first rulers of earth, and that the king of the monsters would protect its home, and they would help him to do so. Also they found out that Rodan was still alive, and that perhaps mothra have left behind an egg; so it would be matter of time until they had to see the titans again.
// I wonder what thinks my friend @cantusecho about this //

Binge-Watching: Symphogear AXZ, Episodes 7-10
Oh thank god, this show still rocks. In which the villains finally step up to the plate, everyone is stronger together, and Hibiki’s gentle fist opens wide.
Count Every Sin
You know what I enjoy? Having faith in things. Believing that the right outcome will present itself in time. If nothing else, my experience with Zero no Tsukaima is a testament to how willingly I will assume the best of things, even when every warning sign is screaming otherwise. At the end of the day, I watch anime because I enjoy doing so, and I never want to lose my ability to trust in a story to see me through to the end. My last Symphogear post was probably the most negative I’ve ever been towards it, and it didn’t feel good being so down on it. But I never lost faith that this was only a temporary stumble. This marvelous, ridiculous has surprised me too many times to let me down now. And lo and behold, the second I picked up the next episode, all those jagged edges suddenly started fitting back into place. Symphogear AXZ has officially fixed its villain problem, and the result is a spectacular return to the kind of bombastic, majestic storytelling that endeared me to it in the first place. This is why I never give up on the things I love; if they’ve earned your trust that completely, it takes a hell of a lot to break it again.
I still stand by my earlier criticisms; this season took its sweet time fleshing out the Bavarian Illuminati into a fully realized threat, and the absence of that potent thematic pushback against our heroes was sorely felt. But now that we’ve finally stopped beating around the bush and are actually digging into the meat of what makes Saint-Germain and her team tick, they instantly right the wrongs of that absence. More than any foes since Maria, Shirabe and Kirika, SG’s team genuinely feels like a family looking out for each other, and they’re driven by the same pessimistic, albeit noble intentions. Hell, thinking about it more closely, they’re Fine from season 1 done right, with the same goal of accruing enough power to break Balal’s curse but this time with a strong internal logic and recognizably human flaws to make their misguided goals make sense. SG is a genuinely noble warrior, fully aware of the magnitude and sacrifice necessary to carry her mission. There’s real conviction in her rebuttal of Hibiki’s attempt at peace-making; this is a path she chose with clear eyes, and she’s determined to follow it through to the end. But she doesn’t avert her eyes from the darkness of the path she’s chosen either; she counts every person who dies to advance her goals, every sin she bears upon her back in pursuit of saving the world. Tens of thousands of sacrifices stain her name; to turn back now would be an insult to every last drop of blood they spilled. If the seas must run red for the sake of humanity as a whole, then so be it.
The Cursed Name
Sadly for Saint-Germain, she’s so obsessed with carrying out her noble mission that she’s blinded herself to the poison growing right underneath her nose: Adam, who plans to steal her sacrifice at the last moment and claim the power of God for himself, rather than use it to save humanity from Balal’s curse. And holy fish sticks, my appraisal of Adam’s subtextual menace last time was spot fucking on. Let’s be real, Symphogear has never been shy about female flesh on screen, but in just this one season, Adam has probably been shown nude more often than pretty much any other character, in far more explicit detail. His mere presence on screen usurps the entirely feminine space this show has built for itself, and the unexpected, jarring result makes him feel wrong and off-putting in a way that creeps under your skin in ways you can’t quite describe, but you absolutely feel all the same. On a subtextual level, Adam breaks the all-lesbian paradigm this world exists in as an avatar of toxic masculinity. He’s a walking symbol of raw, primal sexuality in its most dangerous, destructive form, invading Symphogear’s female space with his domineering, coercive eroticism.
And that subtext underpins just what a cruel, callous bastard Adam is. I don’t know what it is, but between this show and RWBY, the name Adam always seems to fit the absolute monsters the best. He’d sacrifice all of Saint-Germain’s friends while still leading her on that he had her best interests at heart. It’s no accident that he’s fashioned himself a perfect submissive “wife” character out of a living artifact (one who can shoot Naussicaa-style nuclear fireballs, no less); in his mind, he is the master over these girls. They are nothing but his tools, to be used and discarded for his own selfish desires. He has no patience for their aspirations of nobility and hope; what good are such frivolous things in the pursuit of power? It’s a bitterly striking portrait of this show’s first truly despicable antagonist. Fine, Maria and Carol were driven by misguided ideals. Dr. Ver was too much of a ham to not enjoy. But Adam is a full-on monster, patronizing and arrogant in a way that threatens the very thematic fabric of the show itself.
And that arrogance is going to end up being his downfall once he realizes how wrong he was to underestimate the power of the Singing Lesbians.
Unison
Because as much as Adam imagines he’s gotten one over on Saint-Germain blinkered focus, he doesn’t realize that he’s equally blind to the power his opponents hold. They aren’t content to accept him as the top dog blindly; if there’s a barrier in their way, they’ll just grow strong enough to punch through it. In fact, this crop of episodes ends up showcasing this growth perhaps more effectively than any season yet. In a sense, it’s the same framework as the 7-10 episode stretch back in GX, wherein the characters would clash with one sub-boss per episode in a manner that forced them to get over their hang-ups and grow stronger because of it. But whereas those episodes suffered in my eyes, the growth everyone undergoes here feels genuine and powerful. And I think the reason is that while the GX episodes had most characters undergo their trial by fire alone, with no one to really compliment their struggles, the entire in-universe point of this stretch of episodes is making the girls grow together. With two Symphogear wielders sharing the spotlight, their arcs are allowed to play into each other naturally and compliment the journey they’re taking together. It leads to more personal, well-thought-out realizations for all of them, and the payoff feels a million times more earned as a result.
It also helps that this time, there’s been some actual buildup and groundwork laid down for the characters to draw from en route to their collective understanding. Maria’s struggle to come to terms with her past, while flawed in ways I’ve touched on before, has been a solid part of her character pretty much since her introduction. And I talked at length a while ago about how fantastic Chris’ understated confrontation of her childhood trauma has been this season. She’s mature enough now to be aware of the scars her past has left on her, as well as how often she enacts violence of her own as a defense mechanism, continuing the cycle of pain. So when she sees Stefan’s ability to stand up after being knocked down by her, the realization that she can still break that cycle herself hits exactly as hard as it needs to. And when she and Maria take their mutual desire to move forward and stand together as one, the result is, no joke, possibly the best goddamn song in the entire show thus far. Good god, their takedown of Cagliostro was fucking incredible, powerful and chaotic and packed with the propulsive energy of a ten-ton rocket. That’s what barreling towards the future looks like, alright.
Meanwhile, while Shirabe and Kirika’s complexes about being her own person and accepting her naivite respectively may have come on fairly quickly, the ways they interact with their partners make all the difference. Seeing Tsubasa finally step into the mentor role after being a lone wolf for so long is a stirring reminder of how far she’s come; she’s mastered her own trauma enough to see herself in Shirabe’s pain, and she’s mature enough to give her the guidance that she herself so desperately needed back then. She knows that putting up walls will only shut out the people who want to care about you, and with Kanade’s memory still firmly etched in her mind, she carries on her former partner’s legacy as long as she’s able. Meanwhile, Kirika’s childish desire to keep everyone safe is reminiscent of Hibiki back from season 1, before she realized just how hard and difficult fighting for justice truly is. But neither of them can ever surrender that hope of everything turning out okay, and if it’s stupid to think that way, they’ll just knock the world into shape until it’s stupid enough to listen. That’s the Symphogear way, after all. Fist, 1. Reason, 0.
Open Fist
But that’s only the first half of the equation. The second half, the part that Hibiki’s learned over countless months of fighting, is that not every problem can be solved with a fist. Not everything can be punched through and left to crumble away. Like alchemy itself, destruction and creation are two sides of the same coin. Both powers are necessary to build a better, stronger world. Saint-Germain, for all her noble intentions, has only ever believed in destruction. As she herself says, she believes that only a fist clenched in anger, the same fist that Hibiki’s always wielded, can bring the world where it needs to be. She carries the same naivite that Hibiki once did, the same inability to see the complexities in saving a world with the potential for chaos around every corner. But Hibiki, this ridiculous fool whose immature stupidity now bears the name of the Symphogear’s trump card against the Philosopher’s Stone (seriously, that gag had me in stitches), sees the full picture now in a way she couldn’t before. She knows that just like in FMA, the concept of equivalent exchange, of sacrificing to gain in equal measure, must be pushed beyond. A better path must be found. Because you can’t build a world where no one has to be crushed if you have to crush people to get there.
You can only go so far on a closed fist of anger. Sometimes, what the world needs is something softer, something warmer, something more hopeful. Sometimes, you need the courage to open your fist and offer your hand, to try and stand together against forces that would tear you apart. And this time, that courage actually gets through. This time, Hibiki’s determination wins Saint-Germain over before she’s already set the apocalypse engine in motion. This time, she has the courage to reach out with that open fist, that same fist that Miku believed in the gentleness of, the fist of a foolish girl who has grown so goddamn much since she first inherited Kanade’s legacy. It’s a moment that hit me harder than I was expecting; at long last, Hibiki has become the paragon she always aspired to be. She can reach out and make the world a better place. She can cross the bridges of misunderstanding with her song and pull people together in the face of impossible odds. Hibiki Tachibana has arrived, and her open fist is going to save the goddamn world.
Side by Side
And speaking of Miku, it’s more clear now than ever that for as important as Hibiki’s passion and drive is to Symphogear, it’s Miku above anyone else who truly embodies its heart. From the very first episodes, Miku has been the one certainty in a world of chaos, the warmth of sunlight that reminds us why this world is so worth fighting for. She’s genuinely one of the best examples of the Superhero Girlfriend trope I’ve ever seen, carrying a rich internal life and an unyielding sentimental glow that makes every time she’s on screen even brighter than the last. And holy shit, that flashback in episode 7 was one of her best moments yet. In a world where it’s all too easy to look out only for yourself, playing the game of life against everyone else, Hibiki’s unyielding selflessness made her realize just how beautiful the world can be when you’re walking side by side. It’s that recklessness in the face of despair, that brazen defiance to give in to threats or taunts or challenges or terror, that defines Symphogear’s ethos, and it’s that light that binds these two girls together in what’s genuinely starting to become one of my favorite anime ships ever. Seriously, you should have heard my reaction when Miku narrated “I made an exception for her gentle silhouette. “ These two aren’t just Good Gays in a world with too few examples of such, they’re genuinely one of the sweetest, most honest fictional couples I’ve ever come across. And Hibiki’s bedside farewell to her before heading into battle was such a Best of Wives and Best of Women moment that I’m fairly certain my heart literally burst into rasberry jello upon witnessing it. These. Two. COMPLETE. Me. And saying goodbye to them upon leaving this show behind is going to be so fucking hard.
But I can handle it. I can handle whatever Symphogear has to throw at me next. I never stopped believing in its capacity to delight me, and I’m sure as hell not stopping now. Bring it home, AXZ. Make this a finale to remember.
Odds and Ends
-That feeling when a giant spinny top is the most dangerous weapon on the field
-”Today, I’m making my cooking comeback!” Miku, I appreciate you.
-”I get the feeling I’d need an explanation for the explanation.” Right there with you, Kirika.
-”We’ll never let go of each other’s hands.” “Get a room, you two.” asdjhasdkj
-”Let’s get pumped before the final act!” Genre savvyness for the win!
-It has been far too long since we’ve seen Genjirou in action. Catching Chris’s missiles and tossing them back at her, I swear to god.
-JESUS FUCK THAT EXPLOSION SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME
-”All you did was build a great wall of distrust between us.” Chris is on fire today.
-”I just can’t control the beast inside me.” askdhasda
-”You were given a woman’s body later in life, but that didn’t stop you from bringing it up at every opportunity.” IT’S CANON! HUZZAH!
-Listen, Hibiki + Miku + Sunsets = Me dying of pureness overload. That’s the equation here.
-”She was so excited, though.” askdjhaskjdhas Chris best tsundere
-WHO CATCHES A DEATH SWORD IN THEIR ARMPIT I SWEAR TO GOD HIBIKI
One more session to go. Let’s bring it home. See you next time for the finale of Symphogear AXZ!

five times kissed / kanata and wataru
*     five times kissed     /     @crystliz
i.
meeting a god is quite the occasion,   even if it’s a false one such as this   !   he wholly believes his godhood,   does he   ?   the boy seems to think of wataru   &   rei as some sort of higher beings too.   how amusing   !   then,   wataru will play along,   for who is he to break this reality.     ❛     your talents lie in wish granting   ?   see,   i’m a master of magic.   would you like to see a trick   ?     ❜     it’s almost too much fun,   entertaining someone whose beliefs in the impossibles of this world is unmoving.   he holds kanata’s gaze in his own,   the look of childlike wonder in eyes only all the more encouraging   &   wataru smiles wide.
❛     of course there’s nothing more enchanting than the mystery held in the sea,   but i could show you all the land has to offer.   fufuhahaha.   ♪   would you like a tulip   ?   daffodil   ?   some lilies   ?     ❜     that is this hibiki wataru’s specialty   !   pulling flower after flower out of thin air for this god’s viewing pleasure.     ❛     oya   ?   but none of these are befitting of a god.   then   -   a rose   ?     ❜     the last lingers in hand rather than discarded in kanata’s general direction with the rest,   eye contact unwavering as wataru brings rose to lips.   no theatrics are spared in his first impressions,   a kiss planted upon rose before arm extends back towards this other oddball   &   flower presses at his lips too.     ❛     this is my gift to you,   ‘kami’-kun.   ~   ♪    ❜
ii.
there’s five of them now.   four other individuals who stood on equal ground to wataru   &   while the name they’ve been given   &   the force that brought them together may be suspicious in itself   . .   he couldn’t say he isn’t thankful for these oddballs he’s come to cherish.   wataru would never tell the others,   cease there be any discontent,   but   . .    he may cherish one above the rest.   the way kanata speaks of himself,   so mighty   &   holy,   this magician has to stop   &   listen.   who has held his interest like this before   ?    not many people come to mind,   if any.
❛     ‘kami’-kun,   i must tell you.     ❜     how rude of him to interrupt,   though wataru never thought of himself to be such a well mannered person in the first place   &   the way the latter always looks back at him like he’s about to preach the good word causes something to tug at heart strings.   besides,   this has to be said   !     ❛     you know   . .   i am no god.   neither is rei.   we are mere mortals.   well   . . !   rei i am not so sure about.   fufuhaha   -   ah   . .   no,   you needn’t grant any wish of mine.     ❜     he declines the offer before it has a chance to come,   knowing kanata would demand a wish from him.   even if he believed kanata to have the power to grant any desire,   there isn’t anything more he wants than what he has here.
❛     though even as a mortal,   i still am powerful,   aren’t i   ?     ❜     wataru’s teasing mostly now.   hand reaches across table for kanata’s own,   playing with digits   &   examining flesh before bringing him closer.   he is mortal too,   even if he   &   so many others believe otherwise.   he must have some desires of his own.   wataru presses a short kiss to the back of kanata’s hand as a show of faith.     ❛     then allow me to grant the wish of a god some day.     ❜
iii.
things had been changing since the unfortunate fall of valkyrie to fine.   somehow over night they seemed to be deemed monsters   &   despise from classmates whom once loved them only grew with each day.   it’s becoming clear of the intentions of those scheming behind the scenes,   yet they only walk deeper into the traps laid out before them.   kanata seems so unbothered,   curiously.   convinced godhood would save him from being burned at the stake   &   his growing number of rabid believers almost make it seem impossible to touch him.   dread   &   worry has begun to setting in wataru’s stomach over it all.   to kill a god is a inconceivable task,   but kanata is human   &   . .   he wishes he’d see that.
❛     your worshipers are quite dedicated.   it’s difficult to see you these days,   ‘kami’-kun   !     ❜     yet he’s managed because this hibiki wataru is a master of trickery   &   deceit   !   up in his hot air balloon no one could find them.   at least,   that’s what he’d like to believe,   but these religious types sure can be   . .   persistent.   even if it’s only for a little while,   it has to be good to get kanata away from them.   wataru’s stood in the other’s space,   an arm placed casually around him   &   his excuse for that would be how much colder it is this high up in the sky.   but really   . .   he’s felt rather protective of this false god as of late.   he wants to keep him selfishly close.   with a short glance at the boy beside him   &   no thought given,   wataru presses lips to his cheek.     ❛     kanata   . .   though you are a god,   i do hope you’ll rely on me if ever you’re in trouble.     ❜
iv.
he isn’t sure how to feel.   another oddball has fallen,   kanata of all people.   yet   . .   somehow it’s for the better.   thanks to a boy with a hero’s heart kanata’s renounced godhood   &   become human like the rest of them                                no matter the metaphors used to to liken them to monsters.   yes,   he’s been cut down,   but kanata smiles so much brighter now that it’s almost blinding   &   wataru can’t look away.   the way he radiates when speaking of this boy   &   the unit he’s joined   . .    wataru is happy something good could come from something so terrible.   he’s also a bit jealous,   but that’s nothing he’d ever voice aloud.
❛     fufuhaha   -   you seem to be having much more fun as a hero than you ever did a god   !     ❜     he isn’t one to let petty jealousy get the best of him,   kanata’s happiness   &   well being is of far more import   &   he really is thankful to that morisawa for achieving something he wasn’t sure he himself could do.     ❛     i think this role suits you much better   &   with that outfit   -   you really do look like a proper hero   !     ❜     hands toy with the edges of kanata’s unit jacket,  inspect the sleek new uniform.   personally,   the power ranger look is not his style,   but   . .   the other boy pulls it off well.   especially when sporting such a genuine smile along with it.   ah,   wataru can’t help himself,   leaning forth   &   pressing a soft kiss to kanata’s forehead.   the gesture not as meaningless as he hopes it comes off.
v.
today is the day this hibiki wataru will die.   there’s no need for tears,   this is the fate he’s accepted   &   he would be reborn anew after his fall like a phoenix from the ashes.   this is his role,   after all                              the villain who must be slain by the main character.   wataru will play his part,   not because there’s no stopping it,   but because he understands why it must happen   !   . .   that’s not to say his heart doesn’t break for the other casualties of this war.   shu,   kanata,   rei,   &   their adorable boy they’ve given everything to protect.   be it unfortunate so many had to be cut down to pave the path for a better future of this school,   yet there’s no rewinding the hands of time   &   the most wataru can do now is prepare the performance of a lifetime for his upcoming execution   !
while he invited his dear oddballs to come see him off to death,   (   regardless of any disagreements for actions being taken,   it’s only right that they be together on this last day.   )   he hadn’t anticipated any desperate acts to change fate until right before he’d step onto stage,   as most dramatic scripts went.     ❛     you’re a bit early for my performance,   kanata   &   a little late to catch my rehearsal.   i’d give you a preview,   but my secret weapon already left   !      ❜     hokuto has gone to finish final preparations for their portion of the live,   thankfully.   wataru involved him only to ensure a valuable lesson is learned by his beloved junior,   but there’s no need for him to be here for this.   the air is tense   &   it’s almost suffocating,   wataru’s heart growing tight for reasons he couldn’t place despite his attempts at light jests.
❛     . .   have you any words about what i’m going to do,   then perhaps it’s better left unsaid.   i understand natsume’s inability to see why i must,   he’s still a child,   but if it comes from you   . .   then i might   . .     ❜      ah,   how uncharacteristic of him to think such a thing   !   he cannot let his mind be swayed by the heart,   by the look in kanata’s eyes   &   the guilt building in chest over a wish he still couldn’t grant.   it had to be kanata here before him now,   didn’t it   ?   for who else could challenge the decisions of a martyr than the person with a hand around his heart   ?   wataru can’t help but think there’s too many things left unsaid between them for this to be his final day,   yet it’s too late   &   he’d be cruel to speak them now.   somehow harmless flirting   &   words with hidden meanings turn to real feeling   &   he couldn’t pinpoint when it happened,   only that he’d realized not soon enough.   they’re engulfed in war   &   nothing could flourish in such an environment,   it’s better left like this.
but there kanata goes,   saying things as he pleases as he always does without the consideration of consequences   &   wataru thinks how unfair life is to hear those three words on a day like this.   he’s stunned silent,   considering options.   there’s a part of him that wants so badly to say it back,   the part where his heart resides,   but then the mind has to remind him how such things shouldn’t be said so recklessly.   he can’t.   yet feelings   &   longing can’t be suppressed entirely either   &   what makes a person more careless than raw emotion   ?   so caution is thrown to the wind,   wataru forgets ideals   &   repercussions momentarily to reach for kanata,   hands at his face coaxing him closer until lips meet for an overdue kiss.
there’s not enough room for regret with all he’s baring on his shoulders,   forehead resting against kanata’s when he draws back,   &   he can’t think about how this will affect them later either.   the pressing matters now are the live about to start   &   the sacrifice he’ll make   &   hopefully kanata   . .   as well as the others could understand.     ❛     . .   please watch me   &   don’t take your eyes off me.     ❜

[translation+lyrics] Ragnarok by Dragon Guardian
youtube
Been a while since we did anything by Dragon Guardian but the above song’s reeeally been stuck in my head recently so I thought I should do it’s album. Lyrics down below and see you all next time
------------------------------------------
時空の旅 (jikuu no tabi, Journey through time and space)
hageshiku moeyuku kako no kienai kizu tozasareta omoi janen uzumaku kioku
The unfading wounds from the past still burn to this day The sealed memories and feelings are ever revolving
kodoku ni obiete nandomo akirame kaketa unmei kara nogarerarenai mae ni susumu dake
Scared and in solitude, I often thought about giving up But even if I can’t escape fate I’ll keep moving forward
hateshinai kono michi ikubaku mo nai inochi wa Kaserareta shimei ni nai chikara tsukiru made ni kagayaki wo ushinau shunkan ga otozure hoshikuzu ni kieteyuku hakanai kibou to tomo ni
How many lives lie on this endless path Shouldering the weight of this burden as long as I can Losing the sight of light as the moment approaches As the stardust fades away, so does hope alongside it
kodoku ni obiete nandomo akirame kaketa unmei kara nogarerarenai mae ni susumu dake
Scared and in solitude, I often thought about giving up But even if I can’t escape fate I’ll keep moving forward
wasureyuku fuukei kioku kara egaki tsutsuke gishin kara sainamareta kako no imashime yori saihate no daichi ni arata na kaze ga fuki yagate saku akai tsubomi ni tamashii ga yadoru
Painting from my memories that scenery which has faded Pained by these doubts which cast their judgement from the past But at the edge of this land a new wind will blow Finally those red blossoms will bloom along with the souls that lie in them
hateshinai kono michi ikubaku mo nai inochi wa Kaserareta shimei ni nai chikara tsukiru made ni kagayaki wo ushinau shunkan ga otozure hoshikuzu ni kieteyuku hakanai kibou to tomo ni
How many lives lie on this endless path Shouldering the weight of this burden as long as I can Losing the sight of light as the moment approaches As the stardust fades away, so does hope alongside it

Ensemble Stars Special Christmas Voices Masterpost
It is 1 am I officially have no life
So Happy Elements is doing a little thing where if you click HERE you can click on your favorite boys, share a tweet on Twitter (automatically does it for you), and you can get a special voice clip from them!! Much fun yes?
Special thanks to @aphonicdreams , Rain, and Linne for the help because like I said it’s 1am here and I uh need sleep.
FIRST YEARS
Tetora Nagumo: Merry Christmas! Seeing the town lights really raises your spirits, doesn’t it? I’m fired up!
Hajime Shino: On Christmas Day, even my house gets a tiny bit luxurious. Doesn’t it make you excited from here on out?
Tomoya Mashiro: Um, Merry Christmas. Ahaha. It’s a little embarrassing, but it’s a special day after all so I feel like it’s gonna be a good day.
Hinata Aoi: Merry Christmas! If you aren’t good you won’t get a present, see? So I’ll be an exceptionally good kid!
Midori Takamine: Merry Christmas. Ehehe…..I also prepared a present, you see…...Will you….accept it?
Tori Himemiya: Here you go~! It’s a Christmas present! I’m the one who picked it out, so make sure you take good care of it, okay~?
Shinobu Sengoku: Merry Christmas! Christmas has nothing to do with ninjas, but being joyful about it is still a good thing!
Yuta Aoi: Merry Christmas! Ehehe. It’s a celebration, so I’ll give you a super special smile as service!
Mitsuru Tenma: Yay~! You’re givin’ me a present?! Even though Nee-chan isn’t Santa you sure are generous~!

Makoto Yuuki: Here you go! It’s a Christmas present from me. Take it, okay? I thought real hard about what was best before picking it.
Souma Kanzaki: Many Chrisumarasu*? No, what exactly was everyone else saying? M-Merry Christmas? (T/N: If you aren’t familiar with Souma’s verbal tic, he’s basically really bad at saying English words hence why he’s struggling to say Merry Christmas)
Natsume Sakasaki: Merry Christmas. I’d like for us to celebrate togeTHER. That way, Little Kitten can experience an enjoyable moMENT, you see.
Adonis Otogari: I celebrated Christmas back in my homeland a lot, so it’s an event I’m familiar with. I’ve prepared a present for you as well.
Koga Oogami: O-Oh. That’s a Christmas present, right? I’ve also got one for you, so take it already.
Mao Isara: Merry Christmas! I really worried about what present I should get you. I’d be happy if you liked it.
Ritsu Sakuma: Here you go. It’s a Christmas present. I picked out something you’d probably like, so isn’t it likely you’ll enjoy it?
Yuzuru Fushimi: This morning, the Young Master happily opened up his presents from Santa. It was worth putting in all that effort into the preparation.
Arashi Narukami: A holy night spent together with me has to be made special, right? Merry Christmas. *kiss*
Mika Kagehira: It's Christmas, huh? I also prepared a present. With this I'm included among Santa's friends, aren't I?
THIRD YEARS
Eichi Tenshouin: Merry Christmas! Come, let’s start the party, shall we? There’s an array of wonderful food and drink and such all around.
Keito Hasumi: I don’t celebrate the custom of Christmas, but I suppose it’s fine. Merry Christmas. This should be fine, right?
Kaoru Hakaze: As I thought, I want to spend this special day together with you. Merry Christmas.
Chiaki Morisawa: Congrats! It’s Christmas! As your Santa Claus, I’ve prepared a present for you! Hahahaha! ☆
Izumi Sena: Here you go. Merry Christmas. I got a present for you, so you better be happy, got it?
Shu Itsuki: Merry Christmas. I’ve prepared a present for you as well. Now stop looking at me with those expectant eyes.
Madara Mikejima: Merry Christmas! Santa Mama will give you a present! Make sure you accept it! Hahahahaha~! ☆
Kuro Kiryuu: Yo, Merry Christmas Little Miss. This ain’t somethin’ that suitable, but will you accept my present?
Wataru Hibiki: Merrryyy Christmas!!! Your very own Wataru Hibiki shall deliver a present to you for your sake! And in even more showy fashion at that~!! ☆
Kanata Shinkai: Ufufu~ I like snow. In the sea, there’s a kind of snow called “marine snow” that falls there as well.
Rei Sakuma: Merry Christmas! Ufufu. Is it strange for a vampire to celebrate Christmas?
Nazuna Nito: Merry Christmas! Santa Nii-chan will give you a pwe--urgh, er--a present!
Leo Tsukinaga: Christmas sure is nice, isn’t it! The town is lively as well. We should gather all the members together and have a party!
Tsumugi Aoba: Merry Christmas! It seems like you’re having fun as well. Well, it’s best to have a celebration with other people after all.
TEACHERS
Jin Sagami: Yes, yes. Merry Christmas. Rather than being with an old man like me, you should go off and enjoy yourself.
Akiomi Kunugi: Even if you expect me to give you a present, it’s pointless, you know. …...Merry Christmas. If it’s words, then I can give that to you at least.

Bookshelf Briefs 11/13/17
Anne Happy, Vol. 7 | By Cotoji | Yen Press – It’s sports festival time, and out heroines are doing their best to at least survive the events, though in Botan’s case that may be difficult. The volume consists of what you’d expect—everyone’s quirk is in full force, the Unlucky Class ends up very very far behind in the rankings, mostly as they’re up against a sports class that compete in national events. Sayama continues to attempt to get over her terminal shyness, and makes small strides. Small strides is in fact the point of this series, as the class in general is doing OK but not well enough to make it in the world. This may become more important later on. In the meantime, Anne Happy is unassuming and cute, with minimal ambition. If you enjoy cute girls falling over, you’ll like it. – Sean Gaffney
Black Clover, Vol. 9 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – We wrap up the Battle with the Midnight Sun here, and our heroes spend some significant time recovering—though for Asta, that time may end up being far longer than he’d really like. We also end up seeing Yuno again. Remember Yuno? Asta’s rival who we saw at the very start of the series? He’s back, and of course is ridiculously strong. The rivalry between him and Asta has ridiculous amounts of BL tease, because this is a Jump manga, but I’m fine with that. There was also a nice non-reveal with a masked captain of Yuno’s unit, who turned out to be masked for different reasons than we’d thought. In any case, new arc should start soon, as we try to figure out how to heal permanent damage. – Sean Gaffney
Demon King Daimaou, Vol. 3 | By Shoutaro Mizuki and Souichi Itou | J-Novel Club – There is one reason that the jaded light-novel fan should give this book a try, and that’s the appearance of the villain, Mister X, who is over the top crazy and in his desire for villainy and despair that is “Art!” reminds me of nothing less than an evil Great Gonzo. Other than that, it’s situations normal at Daimaou, Inc. We get a bit more depth for Hiroshi, Akuto’s fanboy, but it doesn’t really work nearly as well for me, as the characterization feels off from the prior two books. And there are the heroines, with Korone getting a nice fakeout “I am going back to be executed” moment, Keena being Akuto’s conscience, and Junko being, well, Junko. Daimaou is a perfect buy for those who have to buy everything. – Sean Gaffney
Dreamin’ Sun, Vol. 4 | By Ichigo Takano | Seven Seas – This was a super shoujo-riffic volume of manga, even though there are some funny bits too (particularly the bonus comic). Shimana encourages Zen’s brother, Ken, not to give up on his boxing ambitions, and in gratitude he shows her Fujiwara’s high school yearbook, which only brings up more questions. In between, there are Christmas presents and bittersweet longing and earnest conversations about dreams. Also, there are at least three and probably more scenes that involve Shimana tearfully running away from a conversation and slamming a door. It’s repetitive, yes, but at least she doesn’t ever spend very long in a sulk. I enjoy Asahi stirring the pot and Zen being a good, sweet friend, but I’m not sure I want Shimana and Fujiwara to get together. He’s right—she is still a kid. Maybe Zen will win her over in the end with his panda wiles. – Michelle Smith
The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún, Vol. 3 | By Nagabe | Seven Seas – The beginning of this volume is super tense! Shiva’s aunt has come for her, accompanied by several of the soldiers that only recently were trying to kill her, and Teacher does his best to rescue her, to no avail. One particularly impactful page-turn, revealing Teacher struck by many arrows, made me realize that because this series is so unique, there’s no variations-on-a-theme template to rely upon and, as a result, I really believed Teacher could actually die. He doesn’t, but what happens when Shiva gets back to the village is dramatic enough, along with a cliffhanger about her real origins. The art continues to be a delight, as well—I particularly love the panels that emphasize Shiva’s smallness and the nonverbal depiction of Teacher’s devastation after she’s gone. Now to manage the four-month wait for volume four! – Michelle Smith
Girls’ Last Tour, Vol. 3 | By Tsukumizu| Yen Press – The odd finally manages to win out over the cute for this volume of Girls’ Last Tour, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We see again and again how depressingly apocalyptic this world the girls are traveling through is, and on more than one occasional it almost leads to their horrible deaths. They also meet someone in the final section, though this is a robot rather than a human—but the essential story beats remain the same. And there’s even some fanservice for anyone interested. I’ve said before that this reminds me of Strawberry Marshmallow, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Miu’s bizarre self-insert fic with her and Chika—though I suspect it’d earn her a smack or two. Oddly compelling. – Sean Gaffney
Kuma Miko: Girl Meets Bear, Vol. 6 | By Masume Yoshimoto | One Peace Books – Well, I did ask for more of the bear, and I certainly get that here. Unfortunately, I also get another bear, who’s painted as the obsessed female stalker of our main bear. The humor that follows, showing a tsundere bear trying to be seductive (and failing), only works about one third of the time. It doesn’t help that the series already has a tsundere, Hibiki, and we get an amusing chapter devoted to imagining what might make her actually confess. Honestly, though, the highlight was the final chapter, where the bear tries to get Machi to take a train as part of his “make her a functioning adult” plan. It doesn’t work—she gets on the wrong train, and is now at the ocean. Will she die? Probably not. – Sean Gaffney
Murcielago, Vol. 4 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – This series continues to play to a very limited audience, the sort who likes lesbians and likes sociopaths, and REALLY likes the combination of the two. If that pleases you, this volume will too, though be warned another sympathetic cutie is butchered horribly. As for Kuroko, she’s actually out of commission for part of this, having been brainwashed by the head villainess of the book. Fortunately, we needed some more characterization for Chiyo, Kuroko’s yakuza girlfriend who’s in a state of constant rage from, well, dealing with Kuroko’s tendency to bed anyone female. Spoiler: she’s badass. As for Rinko, the child killer from last time… well, I don’t want to spoil it. Suffice to say I laughed, but it was rueful. Murcielago is hilarious and you will feel bad. – Sean Gaffney
My Monster Secret, Vol. 8 | By Eiji Masuda | Seven Seas – I suspect it’s going to be harder and harder to drag out the “we’re not really dating” card after the ending of this volume. Which is fine, as I will freely admit that the relationship between Asahi and Youko is one of the two best reasons to read this book. The other is the humor, and there’s plenty of that on display as well, as we see angel feathers that make people act out the Seven Sins; Koumoto-sensei celebrating another birthday of being a single woman, as no one will let her forget; and Nagisa getting turned big (as opposed to being in her alien suit) in order to once again fire up the love triangle. There’s stuff that doesn’t work (anything with Shimada), but this series still has more hits than misses. – Sean Gaffney
Requiem of the Rose King, Vol. 7 | By Aya Kanno | VIZ Media – Wow. And also “holy crap.” I’m going to completely forego any spoilers this time, because the surprises in this volume need to be experienced as they come. Suffice it to say that Richard does not handle the revelation about Henry’s true identity well, and Henry doesn’t handle captivity and his lusty feelings for Richard well, either. All of these sad, broken people being crushed by… well… the game of thrones. Although a smidge of me still dares to hope Richard will find happiness by the end of the series, the ending of this volume suggests otherwise. I actually had to look up whether the series was concluding in the next volume, though that doesn’t appear to be the case. I should have known better than to choose something else for pick of the week, even if it was my beloved Chihayafuru! – Michelle Smith
Toriko, Vol. 40 | By Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro | Viz Media – Still counting down towards the end of this series. At least Toriko gets to add another item to his menu, meaning he only has two to go. But unfortunately, this one is more about the ridiculous fights than the ridiculous food, and whenever that happens it’s never good news. The author is better at food porn. He’s also better at ho yay, as the reunion of Toriko and Komatsu is loaded with an absolute ridiculous amount of subtext—I would not blame readers for forgetting Rin exists. As for the evil plot, it creeps incrementally forward, leading to a cliffhanger as Toriko and company finally challenge God. I’m finishing the series as I’ve already read 40 volumes, but it’s only for the hardcore now. – Sean Gaffney

@frozenriver x
A shiver raced down the “rapidash”s spine as his ears picked up a sound that broke the gales. Before he could think, Hibiki’s body was moving on its own. His nimble form danced over fresh snow, surging through snow banks and leaving a silent rampage in his wake.
He was frantic, heart pounding.Nostrils flared as he tried to find the source, moving closer. He was closer, but not there yet -- but!
Tumblr media
The smell of blood was stronger now. Even with the sheer “blank”ness of the snow, he could smell it now, a strong scent that awakened the predator in even the youngest hunter.
More importantly he recognized that sound. It was a sound he’d hope to never hear from that particular voice though.
Kawa --
He was already becoming chilled before hearing the call, now he was freezing, warmed only by the boiling blood pumping through his veins. He had to find him - he had to find him --
“Kawa!”
The horse bellowed, it was surreal hearing his voice echo, the only sound in the environment right now. Heavy breaths billowed from his muzzle as he stood. Ears lifted again as he found what he was looking for.
The muscles in his legs tensed as he kicked off against the snow, reaching the peak of a large hill and pausing as he peered onto the clearing below. His breath hitched as he felt his body run cold. There was no mistaking it now.
He descended from the hill, shifting to his human form by the time he reached the foot of the hill and running over, sliding to his knees before the other Suicune. Gingerly, Kawa’s head was picked up, pulled onto Hibiki’s lap as he cradled the other’s head.
“Kawa...no..”

“Do we need to rest?”
Tumblr media
Reika chirped, the silence between them broken only by Hibiki’s hooves thumped against the ground as she rested on his hindquarters, she was digesting a ...well...that was probably better left unmentioned. The articuno had gone inland chasing prey, but misjudged the sheer size of the prey she was shoving her face with, now too heavy to fly. Too bad she wasn’t able to ignore the laws of anatomy like Homura.
“We can rest when we get to the beach. If something happens it’ll be easier to escape into the ocean. -- Look, we’re almost there.”
Unsprisingly, as he stepped out onto the sandbar his legs sunk into the soft sand. It didn’t seem to bother him though, laying down to sunbathe and allow Reika to safely climb off.
The bird’s attention was drawn to something else, however...

Also since I already fucked up Suicune, HIbiki can turn into a hippocampus looking fucker when he gets wet in both pokeform and human form. It’s optional
He’ll look like that as both a suicune and a rapidash, the only difference is the size
