So life throws curveballs. Last week in the interest of mental health my BFF and I took a sick day and spent the day together eating and shopping and enjoying some wine.

We live in a great city that offers plenty to do even during the time of the Covid. We started our day at Holtman’s Donuts. Y’all I got into a Holtman’s for the first time ever!! The OTR location is not wheelchair accessible. The winning donut of the day was the Pumpkin Cinnamon Sugar. OMG melt in your mouth good.

After Holtman’s we hit up a new (to us) store - At Home. I want to know what in the name of Black Swan and Zsa Zsa Gabora caused these “trees” to be created.

After that we did some more shopping at Trader Joe’s. The line was decent but it did not stop us and we left $60+ poorer than when we entered. Ignore my short girl photography but there was no ramp at the end of the sidewalk so I was hanging out in the curb lane.

And finally the best part of the day was lunch at Senate OTR! We hadn’t been there in possibly a year and they had just reopened Post-Covid shutdown. They are doing great things with social distancing and the “Carol Baskin” hot dog was DELISH! Oh and the wine was pretty dang good too. Not pictured the scrumptious bacon fat fries that you can only get on Fridays.

So, if you have stuck around this long, moral of this very long post is that shit happens. It’s how we get through it, together, with people who love us that makes the difference. This was the best use of a sick day. We laughed, we complained, we shared meals. And I’d like to think that when we both went home we felt a hell of a lot better about ourselves. I know I did.

Who doesn’t love donuts and scavenger hunts?

I have heard of the Donut Trail but never knew what it was until I went to Stan the Donut Man store to get some one morning. Here’s how it works: at any of these stores, they have these passports. You take it with you to the ones on this list and they stamp it. After it’s all finished, you send your card in and receive a free t shirt.

It’s something fun to do not only on a weekend morning but to just try different donuts and enjoy their yumminess. I went to Holtman’s Donuts this morning and so far, them and The Donut Hole by Milton’s donuts have been the best.

It’s free to participate in if you’re around Cincinnati. If you love donuts, you have to play. It’s a lot of fun and not to mention delicious.

Butler County Donut Trail

Have you ever heard of such a thing?  I hadn’t either, until recently.

Butler County, Ohio, which is just north of Cincinnati, boasts some terrific donut shops, and the Visitor’s Bureau has put together a tour just to show them off!  If you complete the tour, you can even earn a t-shirt.  My sister and I did just that, combined with a little geocaching.

While we visited for the geocaching GeoTour, we couldn’t resist entering the shops to see what all the fuss was about.  It doesn’t matter where you start, but choose a stop on the list.  While you’re inside, pick up a card, like those shown above.  Each shop will stamp your card, and when it’s complete, you’ve earned a coveted Donut Trail shirt!

Donuts are an inexpensive way to get a taste of the area.  At about $Here were some of our favorites:

Milton’s Donuts, 3533 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown, OH —  the cheese danish cup was fantastic, and tasted like cheesecake!  And when you walk in, wonderful baking aromas fill the store.  Wow!   In my opinion, this was the best of the bunch!  Check their hours — they’re not open all the time.

Jupiter Coffee & Donuts, 5353 Dixie Hwy, Fairfield, OH — the decor is great!  Lots of coffee bean art, created by the owners and employees.  If you like lemon meringue pie, try the lemon meringue donut.  It’s delicious!

  The Donut House, 8268 Princeton Glendale Rd, West Chester, OH — This donut shop has a unique feature.  You can choose your donut, and they’ll fill it before your eyes — your choice of fillings.  The key lime was very good, and you don’t find it often!

Friday Night

I’m not much for going out late on Friday or Saturday nights anymore. I live in a hipster neighborhood that everyone wants to go to on the weekend. Makes it hard if you live here. But in the Fall everything starts to calm down a little bit. So last night I went to dinner with friends at Kaze at 7:30pm and then grabbed Holtman Donuts on the way home. The streets were packed and the neighborhood had such an energized vibe. Oh and the food and company were top-notch.
