“You will need the help of the traitors, Wilkes and Rothe, to navigate there.” Hollowar continued. “It is important that you gain their trust. They will know more about the subject than you.”

“And what of Miss Rameau?” he asked immediately. “What role did you give her in this?”

The elder who shared her name raised his head. “She kept the knowledge of the map hidden from a member of the High Guard. There is no better place for her, than the land on which her father died.”

His eyes widened. “That’s it, then? One mistake and her life is ruined? I shouldn’t be surprised, after all Mara Wilkes would have been on this council if it weren’t for–”

“Mind your tongue!” Hollowar’s open palm smacked into the side of his face. “Do not squander this opportunity.”

“Your compliance will be rewarded with full immunity.” Elder Herric’s words were meant to be reassuring, but contained a veiled threat. “We understand this is a lot to ask of you.”

His cheek stung, but he refused to let Hollowar rattle him. He raised his head. “What exactly are you asking of me?”

“You must find Highgrave and ensure that it is completely destroyed.”

“And the exiles?” Adrin knew the answer the instant he asked.

Elder Herric glanced at Elder Rameau, who seemed to nod encouragingly. “They are not to return to this city. Do what you must.”

alrighty so your girl did a quick and dirty fact check of this one and what i found is ... inconclusive! all the news articles about the issue source back to the same website, lead safe mama, run by tamara rubin. here's the post on her website, from 2019: Corelle® recommends using their pre-2005 dishes as “decorative pieces” due to concerns for high levels of Lead

i have not been able to find any larger scale corroboration of her findings and aside from the screencap of an email included in this post that is ostensibly from correlle, the only statement i can find about it is this one:

rubin's work was cited in consumer reports in february 2023, in an article that mentioned other cases in which her findings led to product recalls or aligned with larger advocacy groups. however, this article does not mention correlle or pyrex dishware.

her work also makes a pretty large appearance in a 2016 snopes article about unsafe levels of lead in vintage pyrex (which snopes rates as "unproven"). the snopes article includes a few useful tidbits, especially this quote from an FDA representative

First, as a bit of background, FDA established and began enforcing limits on leachable lead in tableware 40 years [prior to 2009, around 1971]. Obviously, any ware, Fiestaware or otherwise, manufactured prior to that era was not subject to FDA limits, because they didn't exist. This doesn't necessarily mean that old ware is unsafe, but consumers who are concerned about such a possibility can use home lead test kits (available in hardware stores) to screen old ware to determine whether it may leach high levels of lead into food.

We do not recommend not using old ware unless it shows signs of deterioration such as cracking or pitting of the glaze. This could be a sign that the glaze is disintegrating and could allow lead to leach into food. In addition to using a home test kit, consumers who want to be cautious might choose to avoid storing foods in older holloware (bowls), consuming hot and acidic liquid beverages such as coffee or tea out of cups, and heating bowls, cups and plates in the microwave. Again, these are qualified recommendations; the ware is not necessarily unsafe because it is old, but it may not comply with current FDA standards.

you can buy lead testing kits online if you're willing to go to that level of effort to keep using your dishes, and if they're damaged or you think they might date to earlier than the early 1970s there's some real cause for concern, but i'm definitely feeling mildly to moderate skeptical about this one.

Hmm I think I’ll answer this for Ruby!

The Hollowar family legacy is hard to live up to, what with the entire city being named after them. Ruby’s mother became obsessed with living up to her great grandfather’s reputation and she neglected her own family in the process. Ruby’s father noticed the disconnect and tried to make up for the lack of motherly attention by bringing her to work and letting her into his world.

Ruby learned blacksmithing at a young age thanks to him and it’s the one activity she truly enjoys when she’s not fighting for her mother’s approval in the High Guard.
