Grimm x Ellina
Why do I always ship rare pairs anyway
Reasons why I ship it~
• She is one of the few bugs who seems unbothered by and actually excited about the Grimm troupe being in town.
• They look good together!
• Ellina seems to be an easily intrigued/excited to try new things and pretty easygoing, I can see her being interested. She's also pretty realistic and down to earth to contrast the showy flamboyant Grimm. I just think their personality traits are compatible.
• They enjoy travelling to distant, and fallen kingdoms. (Each for their own, very different reason, but still.)
• They kinda have Howl x Sophie vibes (everyone should know I love studio Ghibli XD but seriously Grimm is so Howl, the nightmare heart is Calcifer, I could make a whole AU about this!)
Ship headcanons ~
• Ellina helps Grimm uncover the details of his past lives, using the records she keeps. (I have a whole episode about this in our 'adventures of new Hallownest series'. It's how I started shipping them lol.)
• Ellina travels all over the place and meets lots of people, she always makes sure to advertise his shows.
• Also Ellina, who is very artistic, draws elaborate posters for the circus. Which he greatly admires.
• Grimm teaches her how to dance, and she is surprisingly very graceful.
• She also loves music. (Which is implied in the wanderers journal!) So she and Grimm bond over their love for music too.
• Also! Grimm gifts Ellina creepy antique figurines and dolls and she adores them. She's an antique lover. I know it.
Now have some doodles!~

Ellina is the Blackwyrm:
In the game, the way we know what enemies are called is through the Hunter's Journal, after killing them once. Ellina knows that the Cast-Off Shell is a Wyrm, so she has obviously killed at least one. Perhaps she even defeated the Pale Wyrm in combat, forcing it to turn into the PK. Now of course, the PK changed this story cause we all know how much he loves propaganda. Anyways, it's possible that Ellina even killed all the Wyrms in the world. After all, we know from Bardoon that they're dead. Also, due to the fact that Ellina has bested gods in combat, it only makes sense that she was given a title. And that is why I think Ellina is the Blackwyrm.

im supposed to be pretending to be asleep right now but
reason to get into hollow knight
if you like journal 3 youre gonna love the wanderer’s journal
ellina has a similar writing style to ford, even including the sidenotes he likes to add. plus the wanderer’s journal is entirely about detailing all the different things in hallownest, so it could be a good way to read up on some of the lore and see if its something youd be interested in learning more about

“These lands have experienced a lot ...
The end was foretold for them, but they stood where the rest fell. Supreme Beings, Hallownest has outlived you all ... ... And gave birth to new Gods. So far, they are just sparks of souls that have become similar to mere mortals, and only guess about their strength. Maybe it's for the best. Their hour ... He will come yet. Until ... Let life take its course. The Chronicler will follow his path, writing down a new history. Sentinel - guard the borders of a small but busy city. Mantis with a difficult fate will lead his comrades forward in the hope of finding a new home. Mosskin, stroking his pet Mosscreep, sits down without fear on the shore of Lake Unn. Young Bumblebee, who has linked his life with art, will devote himself to rebuilding the great city. And the four kids playing on the GreenPath will just wait for their Uncle Hollow and the cartographer, who decided to climb a little beyond the old map. Three sisters and a brother can finally enjoy their childhood. Their fates are still ahead.
These lands deserve their new dreams. Dreams about the future. Oh no, the journey through the Eternal Kingdom isn't over yet. "

While i haven’t personally got the chance to read it yet, it seems the Wanderer’s Journal introduces a new Character called Ellina. And she’s super adorable and i feel like she and Elizabeth would get along really well. They would share stories and knowledge, compare their notes and journals and stuff. Elli could tell Ellina about the life in the city before the infection and Ellina could share stories about places that Elli never saw before.

In our series there is an episode in the first season where Ghost does banish the Grimm troupe and the the ritual is broken.
So the nightmare heart dies, but (because we are so attached to the characters and this is basically an everyone lives au) Grimm and Grimmchild both live, now disconnected from the heart and mortal, they decide to come and stay in Hallownest to repay little Ghost by providing the regrowing kingdom with entertainment through their circus.
Now all of this leads to a very fun character arc for Grimm throughout the series where he has a difficult time adjusting to being mortal after a thousand years of being the nightmare hearts puppet.
There are several episodes that tackle this subject and they are some of my favorite Grimm troupe episodes
Tumblr media
These four in particular, the first is the banishment episode, the second is a fun one where Ghost/Shade lord loses some of their godly power and Grimm who is adjusting to a similar change steps in to help (may or may not actually be helpful lol).
The third centers around Grimm's fears concerning his childs mortality after Grimmchild is injured during an adventure,
and the fourth is about Grimm uncovering the stories of his now forgotten past lives with the help of Ellina the chronicler (who returns to Hallownest to make a record of the new kingdom.)

Do you guys know who this bug is? If you don’t, this is Ellina the Chronicler, aka the presumed in-universe author of the official Wanderer’s Journal. I recently acquired the book myself and could give it a read, and... Well, it clearly doesn’t give much about Ellina’s character. You can check out mossbag’s video about the Journal if you’re curious, but in a nutshell, the only things we know are pretty much that 1) she visits Hallownest at the same time as the Knight, it’s just that they constantly miss each other, somehow. And, 2) Hwurmps make her laugh. Which is, uh, reassuring because whoever wouldn’t find the hwurmps funny has a problem. Even the Hunter finds them amusing.
I must admit, I’m a bit stumped regarding this character. She’s exhaustive in her research (I mean, she’s far from mossbag’s level, but in her defense it’s a bit hard to understand any lore when you don’t know who the Radiance or the Hollow Knight are). She sees a lot of grubs but never frees them (>:C). This bit would give me “I’m a journalist and journalists should report information without interfering with the events” vibes, but all at the same time she mentions saving Zote once or twice. So welp. She also mentions meeting the Elderbug, Quirrel, Cloth, Iselda, Salubra, Sly, Cornifer, Tiso and countless others (pretty much all NPCs in existence, all in all), but we never get any detail regarding what kinds of stuff they talk about. Her interactions with the shopkeepers at least seem to be strictly shopping business, and not a single word besides that... But it’s just because it’s really not mentioned and she doesn’t really describe their personalities, just what they sell and what is a good deal.
So... There are two main questions at play here. First off, since Ellina is supposed to visit Hallownest at the same time as the Knight, it’d be logical to think that she’s also present currently -- at least, that’s a tangible possibility. It’d be unlikely for her to take a big role because there’s a lot of other NPCs who are already seen in the game and who are destined to play a big role; but, then again, Iselda is an example that even “background NPCs” who aren’t supposed to be seeng outside of Dirtmouth can be active in Hallownest itself nonetheless and have their moment of glory, if only for the time of a few episodes :p
So here goes:
Would you like to see some Ellina cameos every now and then, just for fun?
If yes, any suggestions for her character?
btw before i checked her picture again the memory i had of her face gave me lots of millibelle vibes

just incomplete and vague thoughts about bugs and not bugs and languages. might be a little incoherent because i’m all over the place today.
in hollow knight, you mostly meet characters and read lore tablets that you can read and understand. travellers speak in a way that the knight understands. iirc, team cherry made up a bunch of words to use for voice lines so that it’s not complete gibberish.
still, i really enjoy thinking about these things:
godseeker makes mistakes in her shakespearean? iirc, team cherry explained as her not knowing how to speak a language as old as hallownest’s.
sly and the white lady share entire voice lines, though they say it differently. this may mean that the language of hallownest is a tonal one.
teacher’s archives have lore tablets that appear to be written in a sort of shorthand. this just might be because everything is acid there and it’s hard to see the letters and words.
soul sanctum and teacher’s archives share a word - ‘aba’. i don’t remember if numbers are mentioned in words in the game, but this might be a number, due to the way it’s used in soul sanctum in the ‘record aba’ tablet.
lore tablets come in several forms: magic (soul?) holograms, acid, painted, mushroom spores, carved into objects. the holograms mostly come from tablets implied to have been made by the pale king himself and tablets in soul sanctum, the acid tablets are only in the teacher’s archives, painted tablets are the most common throughout hallownest (though it might not even be paint?), mushrooms spores are used by mushrooms, carving is used by the mantis tribe.
the hunter’s journal is indecipherable until you get the ‘context’ for it, which may be due to the hunter writing in a different language/dialect or just having absolutely horrible handwriting.
the fungal lore tablets are indecipherable without spore shroom. the mushrooms have their own hivemind and language.
mr mushroom’s ramblings are indecipherable without spore shroom, though not his thoughts. the dream nail might be a great translation tool.
relic seeker lemm says he likes to decipher the wanderers’ journals, which may mean they are either written in a different dialect or language. this also means lemm is good at translating. good for him.
he also talks about stone journals and silk parchment. this is mostly about how the decline showed itself in different parts of life, but i think it’s a nice detail. i can’t quite tell if
cornifer appears to write on something paper-like, which may or may not be silk parchment.
the weavers used to weave stories in their threads. they might only be understandable to those who know how to unwrap(?) the silk. other than that, deepnest might not have any written language, though that might be connected to the fact that they always used silk parchment, which lemm says does not endure moisture. i have no clue.
arcane eggs. they exist.
due to being travellers without the ability to ever settle (at least in the waking world), the grimm troupe must be very good at understanding languages. this might be due to being aided by the nightmare heart, which ‘binds all lands’, according to nkg in godhome. this might just be about how the troupe travels the whole world without restriction, though i like to think that language can be included. the idea that the troupe members just know a lot of languages is also fun. elderbug says he and nymm talked, which means nymm either got to keep his language skills granted by the nightmare heart, or he’s just good at languages. i don’t know.
ellina the chronicler, from the wanderer’s journal, mentions that she can’t understand the lore tablet near the entrance to the abyss. this means that either the ‘higher beings, there words are for you alone’ tablets really do forbid common bugs to read them or that ‘higher being’ is actually how those who speak hallownest’s language are addressed as (at least by the pale king)
something else goes here idk what i think im forgetting something. f.
hornet can understand the lore tablets and language in pharloom. this might be just for convenience, though it’s possible the language of deepnest was heavily influenced by the weavers, which came from pharloom. i don’t remember if there’s a specified time period when they settled in deepnest, though.
that’s all, i think? it was very fun to try to put into words. it also encouraged me to refresh my memory and i didn’t even realise that the mantises were the only ones to carve symbols into things. i used to think hallownest bugs also did that. the more you know, i guess!
TL;DR: i am passionate about this game and its worldbuilding. it’s very good.

so i did want to talk a little bit more about what ellina--and even the base game--seems to imply about monomon.
i dunno if you’ve heard, but generally people tend to sort university professors (and universities) into two categories: there's “teaching” professors who can and do teach, with a genuine interest in the welfare of their undergraduate students, and then there's “research” professors who delegate all their teaching responsibilities to their graduate assistants and focus on their research instead.
ellina's wanderer's journal hints that monomon was the researcher kind of professor, which is some Fun Times, because i think most of us were thinking that monomon was the teaching kind of professor.
backtracking a bit, so that we’re all on the same page, i think it's important to mention that the issue on the table is one that hallownest, as a general storyline, comments a lot on, which is the "ozymandias" issue--a human (and bug, apparently) tendency to build great empires and huge stacks of knowledge and piles and piles of achievement, all of which will largely mean nothing whatsoever when we all die, and/or when the empires fall and everyone forgets all of our achievements. the game would like us to become comfortable with the idea that all of our achievements in life won't follow us to the grave. ashes to ashes, more or less.
the project of the seals is to preserve the pale king's great achievements, which is hallownest. (the game goes to great lengths to remind us that the unnatural prolonging of mortal achievements comes at great, prolonged sacrifice of the people who have to bear that weight. in very blunt terms, preserving hallownest instead of letting it decompose is powered by The Hollow Knight's personal suffering. that, more or less, was the hollow knight's purpose.)
so when it comes to "should we try and prolong kingdoms and mortal achievements?" the void comes down on the side of No (partly because they seem to be the embodiment of entropy, or something like that). the radiance comes down on the side of Yes, rather than accepting her death. the pale king comes down on the side of Yes.
figuring out what monomon wanted to use her archives for speaks to that same issue: did she want to prolong her mortal achievements (the accumulation of knowledge), or did she wish for it to be disseminated (with the knowledge's survival being not as important as its dissemination)?
a lot of fandom interpretation has posed monomon as the second case. from the fact that monomon is referred to as "monomon the teacher," and that she had a student she collaborated closely enough with to do something vaguely treasonous (quirrel and the loophole in the dreamer seal), you'd think that she's the "teaching" type of professor, who takes an interest in the welfare of her students, and accumulates knowledge in order to pass that knowledge on.
that's doubly compounded by the fact that the one time we see her doing anything on-screen, she's actively undermining the stasis seal, and there's a whole chunk of deleted dialogue in which monomon talks about how knowledge kept in stasis is useless and ultimately for nothing. it's a pretty damning condemnation of the pale king's actions.
so the picture we've got from that is that monomon saw, ahead of time, that seeking to preserve hallownest would be a foolish endeavor (ashes to ashes, the folly of impermanent mortal glory, memento mori, etc etc), and this is why she did the plan with quirrel, and accordingly this is why she's so pro-seal-breaking when the player knight shows up.
but if what ellina tells us about the archives is true, then the archives are actually primarily a collection of research, gathered all together in one place by a professor who didn't give a fuck about teaching and spent most of her time accumulating research and knowledge. to that end, she would be rather pro-pale-king-stasis-seal, since preserving everything in stasis would also preserve her oh-so-precious stack of accumulated research.
that fits with her plan with quirrel; one of the effects of quirrel making off with her mask is that this ensures she can't be killed even with a dreamnail. so she's doubly sealed to doubly protect her stack of knowledge--and for that matter, it's worth noting that her stack of knowledge is VERY difficult to read, and might be difficult to read because it wasn't intended to be read. the point of monomon's archives, under this reading, is simply to have the knowledge, not to spread or teach that knowledge.
ultimately, she did call quirrel back and undo the seals, but that doesn't seem to be the original point of her sending him out of hallownest with her mask. rather, that would have been a pretty dramatic turnaround from her previous convictions.
overall, in version one, monomon's a clever bitch with enough foresight to, at the very least, seriously consider the possibility that the pale king's plan wouldn't shake out the way he hoped, and her actions during the game events are just her acting out her failsafe. in version two, she's a lot more like the pale king in her wish to accumulate knowledge for the sake of knowledge, and her change in attitude is more or less a complete 180 turn. which isn't a bad thing, mind you--it's actually a rather good thing, because it's a mark of a pretty thorough character arc (the character starts off one way, a series of events happen, they come out transformed).
the second one is a really interesting story, imo! but it's a fary cry from the fandom monomon that a lot of people have come to like, and i myself have found myself pretty comfortable with the first one (even speaking as someone who's co-written a fic more or less based around the premise that monomon was an imperfect person). plus there's ways to argue that ellina isn't the most reliable of narrators, and further ways to argue that the wanderer's journal wasn't exactly "made" by gibson and pellen's personal four hands (the book is officially credited to Kary Fry and Ryan Novak), which is a fun opening for people to argue about the status of the journal's "canon-ness." and on the other hand, it's got the Team Cherry logo on it, so whatever's in the book must have been signed off by gibson and pellen, no?
i'm not an advocate of losing sleep over the "canon-ness" of extra material, or even any fandom affairs whatsoever. i think the clearest and most objective reading of what the wanderer's journal has to say about monomon's archives HIGHLY implies that she was a research-oriented professor who, ironically, didn't do a lot of teaching.
but also if people, like myself, choose to interpret her in a different way, i really dont think it matters. it's fandom. it's literally fun and games and shits and giggles. YOLO, my dudes.
