HOKULE`A SAILORS HELP TLINGIT COMMUNITY LAUNCH CANOE FOR FIRST TIME IN 140 YEARS
Hawaii News Now - June 22, 2023
Another historic launch on Monday for the crew of Hokulea, but this time in Angoon, Alaska.
For the first time in more than a century, the Tlingit community launched its first traditional dugout canoe with the help of Hokulea sailors.
It’s called a “yaawk” and is made from red ceder.
It took the community about one year to build.
In 1882, the U.S. Navy bombarded the Alaskan village, destroying homes and all but one of its fleet of canoes.
Thus, making this a very symbolic and healing moment for many of the community members.
The Hokulea crew plans to depart Angoon for Kake on Friday.

US — Albany, New York. Three days before winning the Democratic Primary, New York State’s first female governor signed into law a bill that essentially eliminates the sex-parity rule designed to guarantee women a voice in politics. Legislation S.6901-B/A.7933-C, dubbed the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act, adds “a non-binary gender X to the potential options for gender designations in elected positions that require that the elected people be of varying genders.”
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the goal of the bill is to enable “individuals who do not identify as a binary gender to run for party positions.” However, the result of similar policy played out on a city level after October 2019, when Émilia Decaudin, a male politician who identifies as non-binary, persuaded New York Democrats to rewrite a rule requiring each district to designate one state committee seat to a man and another to a woman. The rewritten rule requires the seats be filled by two people who “do not identify as the same gender.” Mr Decaudin won the Female District Leader seat in Queens with 52.56% of counted votes, beating Deirdre A. Feerick, who was endorsed by the Queens Democratic Party. When Mr Decaudin faced a backlash for filling the female seat and for sporting onstage at a political event a tight red dress onstage showcasing the bulge of his genitalia, the then-20-year-old advised detractors: “suck my girld**k.”
New York State’s sex-parity rule was put in place in New York in 1920 to guarantee women a voice in politics. After American women demanding voting rights at a 1917 march endured arrests, followed by clubbings, beatings and miscellaneous torture while in police custody, the right to vote was established nationwide. Eleanor Roosevelt and the League of Women Voters then fought successfully for the sex-parity rule as a guarantee that women would forever have a voice in politics.
Commenting on Legislation S.6901-B/A.7933-C, Assemblymember Jessica González Rojas said: “I’m thrilled that the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act is being signed into law today. As the rights of communities are being stripped away, my bill will help non-binary people build power in New York by being able to run for a political party office and meaningfully engage in elected positions. Émilia Decaudin said: “I am so grateful to Governor Hochul, Assembly Member González-Rojas, and Senator Myrie for helping to bring this important piece of legislation to the finish line. For decades, non-binary New Yorkers have been legally excluded from the most fundamental form of political participation in our state. With the signing of the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act into law, that ends today.”
The United States Democratic National Committee (DNC), the governing body of the nation’s Democratic Party, began the trend of gutting the sex-parity rule on August 23, 2018, when it passed a charter that allowed seats once reserved for women to be filled by male politicians who identify as women or non-binary. Governor Hokul has also signed into law the Lorena Borjas Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund Legislation S.8884-A/A.9418. According to New Pride Agenda Executive Director Elisa Crespo, this “investment in trans led organizations in New York” will “foster new and emerging trans leaders.” The legislation provides direct health services, including controversial medical procedures, along with “cultural competency education and training, organizational capacity building and transgender wellness initiatives” for “the transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary and intersex (TGNCNBI) community.” She additionally called for 30 New York landmarks – including One World Trade Center, the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Empire State Plaza, State Fairgrounds Main Gate and Expo Center, Niagara Falls, Grand Central Terminal, and MTA LIRR – East End Gateway at Penn Station – to be lit in the rainbow flag colors on June 23, 25, 26, 28 and 30, and lit the colors of the transgender flag on June 24, 27 and 29. Last month, Governor Hochul signed into law a bill allowing all residents of New York State the option of choosing ‘X’ in the sex designation field on a driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID card. The law is in keeping with New York’s Gender Recognition Act, signed into law last year by Governor Andrew Cuomo, which allows New Yorkers to change their names, sex designation, and birth certificates to reflect the sex they self-identify as. In January, Governor Hokul issued a policy directive to allow New York state inmates who declare they have “a gender identity that differs from their assigned sex at birth” to be imprisoned with inmates of the opposite sex.

HONORING SACRED PLACES - HAWAI`I ISLAND HOSTS WORLD PEACE & PRAYER DAY
Hawaii Tribune-Herald- June 19, 2017 - By Jeff Hansel
World Peace and Prayer Day has chosen Hawaii Island as the site of its main 2017 gathering that is running through tomorow.
The annual event’s website says “prayers will be offered for the heavens at Mauna Kea and for the highest fresh water at Lake Waiau, for the entire Earth through offerings to the sacred fire at Kilauea and for the ocean by the Hokule`a voyagers.”
Lakota Sioux Nation Chief Arvol Looking Horse, keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Woman pipe told the Tribune-Herald in a telephone interview that various countries ask for the event to visit each year.
The location is chosen through prayerful reflection. Participants are invited from “all faiths, nations, races, ages and genders who share concern for the welfare of humanity and the Earth to share in one prayer.” It has been held before in countries such as Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Organizers say Mauna Kea (also known as Mauna a Wakea or the Mountain of the Sky Father) as a “sacred mountain holds mana – spiritual and divine powers – and is a focal point of spiritual and cultural significance to connect with the ancestors, energy and life forces, as well as the ancestral realms. Mauna a Wakea is a place to connect in union with the divine Aloha of the Creator.”
The Peace and Prayer Day gathering allows spiritual individuals to pray together, regardless of their personal faith, and seek healing for the earth....
“...We just hope the local people can come and join us,” Looking Horse said.

Sending our aloha to the crew of the #Hokule'a on their 3year world wide voyage. Historic day. " I have laid the stick that connects people together. Now it is up to you, your generation and the generations to come, to build upon that stick a bridge that will ensure the free sharing of information and teaching between the two peoples until the day we become untitled as a single people, as we were once before; before men separated us with their imaginary political boundaries" - Papa Mau @hokuleawwv
